Microphone sound too soft?

Q: Microphone sound too soft?

I use mics over Ventrilo, a teamspeak-type program for people to talk. Randomly one day people couldn't hear me; I thought it was my mic. I bought a new one on Newegg and it has the same problem. I used the 'test hardware' app on both, and found that all three mics (both ones plugged into the jack and my mic built into the laptop) can transmit sound but only when I speak really, really close to it... and even then the sound is distorted. I thought at first it was a mic jack issue but the built-in mic has the same problem which suggests otherwise.

Anyone know how I can fix it? Do I have an internal mic volume that's just set to receive only really close sounds, or is something else screwed up?

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

Hi! I just got this hp pavilion gaming notebook - 15-ak049tx and I always use skype to talk to my friends whenever I play games with them but some how this laptop's microphone volume is so extremely soft that my friend can't hear me. All the microphone options that is available has the same result.  I realize there is no microphone plug on this laptop as well. Only for headphones. Is there anyway to fix this problem? Please help thank you!

A:Microphone is very soft.

Hi @Resia, Welcome to HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help. I understand that when you use the microphone on the laptop, your friends cannot hear you clearly. Please try the steps on this document: HP PCs - Resolving Microphone Problems (Windows 10, 8) Let me know if it helps to resolve the problem. If you want to use an external microphone, since your laptop has 1 headphone/microphone combo port based on the specifications of your model, you will need a split, if your headphone/microphone set has two plugs; or you can use a headphone/microphone set with one plug. If this post helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution" button down below in this message. Hi, I've been having a problem with my microphone that I want to use for my laptop. When using it barely catches any noise even with the settings turned all the way up. I know the microphone is working because it works perfectly on my friend's computer. Like I've said I tried turning up the settings and making sure it's not muted, all the simple stuff but it still barely fills a bar when I tap the mic. I also noticed it doesn't show up as a microphone in the recording tab. The microphone that's disabled is my laptop's built in one and the one below it that says "Line in" is the one I want to use. So I'm just wondering what I can do to hopefully fix this. Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

A:Line in microphone too soft

How much jacks do you have on that laptop? I suppose you have only 2. One for microphone and one for headphones.

If that is the case, try right-clicking on the free space in that panel and select "show disabled devices", then rightclick on the Microphone entry and select "set as default".
Or right-click on the Line in entry and select "disable" then set the microphone as default.

Hey everyone! I need quite abit of help over here. A few hours ago, my mic was working okay and everyone could hear me talking on this voice comm software called "Mumble". However, my mic ceased to record my voice properly and it could only transmit when I blow right into the mic or hit the headphones abit.

I re-installed and updated my driver "Realtek HD Audio Manager" to the latest version and it started to work properly again except that it is extremely soft and I already had all my settings tune to max including all the recording control settings and stuffs. I also changed microphone and it did not work so I suspect something must be wrong with my computer/drivers. I need serious help here!

My computer is making kind of a loud whistling sound, it doesn't look like I have bad caps(on my motherboard) though.

Also I hear some sort of "disc spinning" or "fan-like sound" that's loud but it's "soft" loud(like a refrigerator/freezer makes a sort of "soft" but loud sound) makes but it's not my fans. I am guessing it could be my hard drive?

Anyone know what problem I could possibly have?

I'd say your sound card driver is not set to the correct duplex setting. Go to the "Sound" icon in the Control Panel, and see if you can set your sound card to "stereo" mix or such. Hard to say exactly what it's called because it's different for all cards and drivers. You just need to find the option for "dual" or "stereo" duplex settings.

So I turned on my computer today and the startup sounds would be normal but sounds for all applications would be very soft. For example when you move the volume mixer to full it would still be really soft. The only sounds that work fine is when I am watching youtube and also when I run steam as an admin because if i dont run in admin mode I am able to barely hear the sounds but it would function normally otherwise. I just tried out the media center but I noticed that when playing files the sound is soft. The media center splash screen is loud when I open the program but I have to turn the volume way up to have it play normal. When I use Media Portal which is almost the same as Media Center the volume is fine. I even tried uninstalling Media Portal just in case the codecs conflict or something. Is there a setting I have to change? I configured the audio in media center for 7.1 speakers.

Sorry I posted this in the wrong section. Mods can you move it to the Media Center section. Thanks.

I sometimes hear a soft zooming sound from the pc-case. It's sort of a vibrating sound, as if the sounds is from a fan. It's usually not hard, but it keeps going on for a long time. A few times, these vibrating sounds were quite loud, for a short time. What could this sound be, and how can it be fixed? There aren't any warning messages from windows.

Hi there guys. I came to this forum a while back and i was really pleased with how helpful you guys were when i was building my computer. Uh, in that regard, my specs are

The rest is irrelevant i think... geforce 8800GT graphics card, 200gb HDD.

Anyway, i don't have a sound card. I Recently got a headset/mic (Altec Lansing AHS515) and when i put the headphone/mic jack into the back of my computer (in the mobo connection) the line out or headphones work fine. However, the microphone or mic out isn't working so great. When i try to talk with it i get a really, really quiet signal if anything at all. It doesn't pick up anything at more than an inch away from my mouth, and to get a loud noise i have to put it literally in my mouth.

I'm using the realtek HD Audio Manager as it came with my mobo. I tried changing the jacks around, but it always comes up as some sort of device incompatible or some similar error.

Regarding the headset, i'm sure it's not broken- i tried it on a laptop i have and it worked fine.

So as i obviously don't have a sound card, i'm wondering if i need on... Read more

Hi, Try the following. Download the Realtek HD Audio installer version on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72117.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72105.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter.  Hold down the Power button continuously for 20 seconds then release it.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  ... Go to control panel \ sound \ Recording

Make sure the volume levels are up high enough and test.

Do this with everything in recording that has a green check mark.

Also, bottom right of your screen, by the time, doubleclick the speaker icon.
Make sure everything is raised, not just the main volume.

Am I going to have to resort to buying a sound card, or is there some alternative?

Hi all,

I just got a 5.1 Speakers set.
Anyway, the smart guys that designed the sound card, or drivers, dont let me use all specific jack holes to hook them up.
Instead, they force me to use mic and line out holes to get Center/Woofer and front sounds.
I need headphones and mic at least as often as speakers.

Anyway, I have a splitter device that let me connect both headphones and front speakers, also mic and Center/woofer.
Where can I find a simple application that let me switch from headphones/mic mode to 5.1 speakers mode.
I can write one myself in VB if I get the right direction where to look (Windows API?).

The best solution whould be a simple sys-tray icon that give me a menu to switch from 5.1 to headphones.
That whould set Speakers setup from desktop speakers to 5.1 speakers and mic/front checkbox you can see in C-panel/Sound and Audio device.

Thanks,
Crirus

I freshly reinstalled my windows 7.
before and after the install,
when I watch videos on youtube.com (that's the only example atm),
the videos play great, flawless framerate, no matter the quality.
but they will randomly lockup. pause. only while in fullscreen.
high speed internet, videos have completed downloading, streaming speed isn't the issue.

if i press ESC to the video minimizes to a smaller display and works flawlessly,
if i press full screen again, the video continues flawlessly, untill 5 or 10 seconds later,
no specific time, they may more may not pause again.

no other system annoyances that i can recall.
i tried updating divx, although Ive never had to install those to watch youtube.

any ideas what could cause full screen video lockup?
ESC and a refullscreen instantly solves the issue, but i have to do it a few times throughout some videos.

reinstall java maybe? seems like I had to install java to watch youtube. i forget.

I just recently had a problem similar to yours, just mine was a bit more complex and have put it on the 'backburner' untill I have more time. I havent found a reason why my disk did 'fail' but dont worry, it can be recovered. Greg recommended this program to solve my solutions, Partition Wizard. This comes in many 'formats' Home version is what you want, it is free and allows you to do the tasks you will need. There is also a more advanced 'bootable' cd which can aslo be foudn on their website. By following this link to a video guide, you have lots of chances of recovering most-all of your data, only downside is that you must have a seperate hdd to copy the recovered files onto, be it your internal HDD or an external one. DONT COPY YOUR RESTORED FILES STRAIGHT BACK ONTO THE DRIVE as this may lead to permenante data loss. It is upto you if you choose the cd/normal one. Could i recommend you ask gregrocker to have a say in this thread as he knows alot in this area,

This depends on what you use. Are you using a VC like ventrillo or TS? or an ingame VC? if ingame what game is it? you often have to change it in your sound/voice chat settings on games. Make sure you have your mic, and headset speakers plugged into the right jack. but from personal experience you have to set up the sound to come through your speakers on the VC program or game.

This is sort of a strange problem. When I'm running Windows XP, I get no sound (through the speakers or through headphones) unless I have something (anything) plugged into the microphone jack. Once I do plug something into the microphone jack, then the sound works perfectly and I can control the volume and mute it and such, but if I have nothing plugged into the microphone then it does not seem that any volume controls have any effect.

I am running Windows XP on a Lenovo Thinkpad T60.

A few extra complicating factors:

1) I also have Ubuntu installed on my computer and, when I accidentally booted in Ubuntu, I noticed that the startup sound played even though I had nothing plugged in to the microphone jack, so it does not seem to be a hardware problem (or at least is an inconsistent hardware problem). I have not played around in Ubuntu to see if all the sounds work.

2) I did once manage to unplug something from the microphone jack and have the sound remain working in Windows for a minute or so, but it soon stopped working again and I was unable to make it happen again.

Any thoughts??

Thanks!

I've the same happening with my HP G70 111em laptop running vista. I've a broken pair of headphones plugged into the microphone jack to get the sound going again!

I'm having trouble getting my mic to record sound onto my pc.
i've checked all the connections and properties, and all is configured right.
when i open up Sound Recorder i try to record and nothing happens. i can hear myself out of the speaker when i talk.
i've checked the audio properties in Sound Recorder and the recording properties are grayed out and i'm thinking this the problem but i don't know how to get it ungrayed. All help will be greatly appreciated. (I'm running win98)

A:Microphone won't record Sound

You are correct - while it is grey you won't be able to record.

Many times, all you need to do is reinstall your sound card drivers. Do you have them on disk? If not, what brand / model card do you have?

What driver did you use on XP? do you still have it? I cant find a driver for it. You may have to install the XP driver in compatibilty mode. To do that you right click the file goto properties. click on compatibilty tab set f or XP

Issue: Sound recording programs which I want set to microphone record wave instead.
An example is windows Sound Recorder. I'd like it to record my microphone input instead of wave files played on my computer.

My Motherboard: EVGA 680i
Operating System: Windows XP

I believe my microphone was working fine until I tried to turn it up and I must have messed with some settings.

Thanks in advanced, any help is appreciated, don't hesitate to ask questions.

Hello, I have a Dell Computer with Vista. I am currently using a headset for Skype and listening to music. A few days ago I have been having problems not being able to use my microphone. Everything was working perfectly fine then suddenly my friend cannot hear me but I can hear him. I have my headset plugged in the pink and green jack. I have checked my sound settings and it says Microphone 'Is Working' and Line In is 'Currently Unavailable.' I've never noticed Line In before. I cannot even use the sound recorder because it says there is no recording device plugged in. I can hear everything perfectly fine. For my Microphone I have ticked both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices."

I would appreciate any help as I'm very confused and would love to set this right.

Hello i'm having a problem using any microphones (i've tried 4 different ones so far)- at some point after the mic is plugged in my sound is completely muted until i restart the computer. All my drivers are up to date and this only occurs when the mic is plugged in. Also video playback such as youtube plays slowly when this happens.

Any advice?

Thanks

A:Muted sound after using microphone?

Please fill in the "My System Specs". We have no idea what your hardware or even the Windows OS version is.

Also, are these USB mic's or standard analog computer mic's?

Hi,

I have been recording my records using my Soundblaster Xtreme music software and whilst I was tinkering around in control panel/sound/recording microphone I somehow switched the microphone option off.

Could anyone tell me how I can get this back please?

:hotbounce Hello!

When i talk/sing into the microphone i sound bad. I dont sound like me at all, please someone tell me how i can change this so it can sound better thx :slurp:

A:Why do i sound different on the microphone and how can i change it?

you sound diffrent for one of two resons.

1) The micro phone your using is of low quality hence it dosnt pick everything up properly, and can sound scratchy or garbeled.

2) your sound card is responsible for picking up and relaying the sounds so if the card is of low quality you get a low quality sound pick up and out put.

P.S. you always sound a little diffrent when hearing your self from a recording then how you do in your head.

Yeah, when I go to the sound settings and then to the microphone I see the Microphone level (that can be set from 0 to 100) and then the dB setting (0-30)

I'm using my laptops own mic and so I don't need to shout on it I put those both to the max, 100 and 30. But when I go back later during a call etc. I notice that the Microphone level has dropped back to like 20...

What does this? It's really annoying to contantly put the level back to 100 :/

A:Microphone sound level?

That's because whatever program is that you're using (Skype, Windows Live Messenger, etc.) is adjusting your microphone levels automatically.

What you need to do is to look in the program you use for this purpose and check the audio/video configuration, disable the option that says "Automatically adjust my microphone levels" and that's it

A:Microphone & Sound Problem

If your PC is branded, visit the manufacturer site for fixes and updated drivers.

It may also be helpful to enable windows update for device drivers. Search online automatically for the latest driver for your audio device and often, this is all that you need to do. Fix your driver for "PCI Simple Communications Controller" and it may also find the other drivers to make your mic work
