CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work

Q: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work

Thread title pretty much sums it up: CTRL-A disabled, CTRL Key Works, A Key Works, Other CTRL-combos work. I use CTRL-V, CTRL-C, CTRL-Z, etc all the time.

CTRL-A has never worked for me, in any application. Instead of selecting all, CTRL-A pastes, the same as CTRL-V, only when you use CTRL-A, in addition to pasting, it also makes a system sound, kind of like a knock sound. Out of desperation to identify the sound I looked control panel sounds and listened to all of them, it's not there.

I've never really needed CTRL-A until now because I'm wanting to use a specific application that has no other way to select all except CTRL-A, so I'm now desperate...

Any help will be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yoga 2-11 Yesterday the CTRL-C, CTRL-X, and ALT-CTRL-DEL functions stopped working; strangely CTRL-V works fine. It's very difficult to get the @  and ? symbols to appear, but capital letters using the same Shift key are fine. Also, when I would type, several of the same letter would appear, and when pressing the space bar several spaces would appear. I fixed this issue by adjusting my keyboard settings by setting the repeat rating to the slowest setting. I've used device manager to uninstall the keyboard, also updated drivers, etc, but nothing seems to fix things. Using Windows Key R and OSK to display the onscreen keyboard, and using my physical keyboard for input confirms that the Shift and CTRL keys work. One thing that I noticed: when I touch the CTRL key a round onscreen circle appears and gets smaller and disappears; this is also true for CTRL-X and CTRL-C, but when using CTRL-V the circle does not appear.

Sir
I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 installed.

In Google search box, when I type Ctrl+Z( for undo), it does NOT work. Neither does Ctrl+Y( for redo). When I type Ctrl+backspace for deleting the preceding word, it works perfectly, but when I type Ctrl+Delete to delete the following word, it does NOT work at all. Kindly help me out of this problem.

In Notepad, Ctrl+Z( undo) works but Ctrl+Y(redo) does not. Neither does Ctrl+backspace(to delete the preceding word) but Ctrl+Delete(to delete the following word) works perfectly.

I don't know why some shortcut keys work and some don't. Please tell me how to make all these shortcut keys work in Google search box as well as in Notepad.

I've set up a bunch of shortcut keys to files/folders/apps I use often by entering a key combo in the properties > shortcut page of .lnk shortcuts. I've done this in every version of Windows I've used with rarely any issues. The key combos are all CTRL+ALT combos.

There are a few that won't register. I'm trying to enter CTRL+ALT+F5 in the box, but it won't take. The CTRL+ALT shows when I press them, but as soon as I add the F5 the box blanks out and says "None" (the default state). I'm entering everything correctly since it's the same procedure I used to successfully set up other combos. This happens with the F8 key and a few others as well. I'm guessing they're preset system combos but they don't seem to do anything when I press them. I've also used those combos on earlier versions of Windows without any problems.

Anyone have any ideas? This is a Windows 10 Home 64 bit HP Envy x360 laptop.
Thanks...

Hi... I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 with a tricked out Firefox 3 with a bunch of extensions, and all of a sudden today I started notice that Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F, 2 keyboard shortcuts that I use ALL THE TIME, are no longer working in ANY APPLICATION. The F and Control keys are working fine separately and other common shortcuts such as Ctrl + C, V, A, O, and P are working just fine.

I've tried it in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Notepad, Paint and Dreamweaver and Ctrl + S and Ctrl + F don't work in either one of those applications. The weird thing is without doing much of anything, it was working at some point today after I had noticed it WASN'T working, but now I rebooted for another reason and those 2 shortcuts are not working again.

By the way, I went into Vista's Ease of Access center (previously called Accessibility I believe), and everything is turned off.

And I also tried the control key to the right of my keyboard. None of it works.

Very annoying... Anyone got any ideas or know of any app that will help me find out what the problem is?

Thank you very much in advance, any help's appreciated

I suspected it could be a problem with my CTRL button, but Ctrl+A works fine, so that rules it out.

Does anyone have an idea what could have happened?
I have guests using the laptop now and maybe they pressed smth accidentally that locked this up..

keyboard to invoke the login screen, you can then use the keyboard to input password.  CTRL-ALT-DEL still does not work once logged in.  Done a lot of searching and no answer so far. I've checked the usually suspects. This is what I've tried:
Problem exists also in Safe Mode.
Full system scan with Kaspersky. Nothing.
Full system scan with Malwarebytes.  Nothing.
Built in keyboard hardware was checked. All keys work and do send the appropriate code. Del, Alt and Cntrl keys all work in Word etc....
External USB keyboard works but still no CTRL-ALT-DEL
Check obvious registry keys to no avail.
Check GPeditor for possible login changes. All are set to default.
User said that this happened after a MS update. I did a system restore back prior to the updates but still no fix.  Appreicate any help on this one.

Hello. I encountered a weird problem.

I recently bough Acer Aspire 5734Z with Windows 7 Home Edition installed. When I type CTRL + C or CTRL + V my touchpad stops working for a few seconds. Then it get back to normal. And Except this the functions of ctrl + c and ctrl + v works.

This happens all the time, no matter how much I copy, I can copy nothing doing just the combination and my touch pad freezes.

When playing games as GTA Vice City I have problems using WASD movement at the same time as I adjust the screen(camera) with touch pad. Suddenly lot of combinations stop working, and I have to either stop walking around (WASD combinations) and use touchpad to adjust screen, then stop using touchpad and go back to using WASD.

I hope you understand. I am not very good at explaining things. And I really hope to find a solution to this.

When I did first-run of the laptop, the touchpad didnt have scrolling function working. So I went to acer.com, found my computer model, selected Windows 7 Home Edition and installed the newest touchpad driver 64bit. And it worked. Scrolling working. But freezing problems still occurs. Hi all!
I need help to use macros properly. It is my first attempt at doing this, and I don't understand what I am doing wrong.

I have found this thread which resembles my problem, but I still do not understand what to do
http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/595235-solved-need-help-macro-using.html

Basically, I have 2 Excel spreadsheets open.
One is List A, the other is List B (Master List).

I have worker codes in List A, and have to find them in the B list to assign them a code (1) in column M.

What I did was go in my first spreadsheet, and selected the first worker code. Then, I started recording my Macro from there.
Ctrl+C worker code
Ctrl+Tab to second spreadsheet
Ctrl+F to open find box
Ctrl+V to paste the worker code copied from before
Close the search box
Cursor now over Worker code, Move over to column M by pressing the RIGHT arrow 12 times (from A to M)
Type "1" and then Enter
Ctrl+Tab to come back to first spreadsheet
Down Arrow to move on to next worker code
STOP MACRO

However, the Macro looks like this :
Selection.Copy
ActiveWindow.ActivateNext
Cells.Find(What:="A4WL7CPA3BRX5", After:=ActiveCell, LookIn:=xlFormulas, _
LookAt:=xlPart, SearchOrder:=xlByRows, SearchDirection:=xlNext, _
MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False).Activate
Range("M1204").Select
Application.CutCopyMode = False
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "1"
Range("M1205").Select
ActiveWindow.ActivateNext
Range("P3").Select

A:Solved: Macro in Excel help! Using CTRL+V inside a CTRL+F

Macro recorder only record specific actions, not generic actions.
So you can't use it to repeat the steps for other cells.
You have to code it specifically in VBA.

As for your case you can have a lookup formula in column M of the Master list to do the check.

eg in cell M12 of List B, type
=COUNTIF('
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)

this goes to your List A first column to count the number of instances the value in cell A12 occurs.
Assuming there is no duplicate, the result is either 1 if found or 0 if not found.

If there are more than one instances in List A, the formula can be adapted to
=(COUNTIF('
[List A.xlsm]Sheet1'!A:A,A12)>0)*1

*1 will ensure that the result which is True or False becomes 1 or 0.

I had to disable all tab browsing for a client in their IE 8.  I then showed the client how to bring up a new window with ctrl+n to provide them a quicker way than clicking for a new window.

Two days later, client comes back and says Ctrl+n doesn't open a new window anymore. It is a desktop running wins 7 pro.  I try the ctrl+n (left ctrl key first) and nothing happens. I try ctrl+n (right key next) and nothing happens. Ctrl+C, +V and others work fine.
So it is not hardware.

I reopened IE same problem. I was told to check if single view or other settings were enabled in IE but the only settings I find are under the Tab settings which when I disabled tabs in IE 8 these options are greyed out.

Of course, the client can click to open a new window, but I am puzzled as to what happened.

My remote desktop session does not appear to be sending the ctrl+alt+left (CAL) or ctrl+alt+right (CAR) combinations to the target machine.

Yesterday everything worked fine. I installed Windows Vista Ultimate 64 and could successfully RD to my laptop machine, which is running XP Pro SP2. CAL and CAR worked.

Today I installed SP1 on the Vista machine. Now my RD won't sent CAL or CAR.

I downloaded a simple keyboard tester application and installed it on both machines. Locally on the Vista machine, CAL and CAR are detected. Same thing locally on the XP machine. When I RD from Vista to XP and try the keyboard test the program shoes that it is receiving the CTRL+ALT combination but doesn't register when I hit the left or right arrow key at the same time. Interestingly, the up and down arrows *do* register.

I tried the RD connection from XP to Vista. Everything works normally. I tried an RD connection from another XP SP2 machine to my laptop. It works.

Any ideas? Is there some sort of key binding in Vista that takes the CAL and CAR combinations before RD can get them? Is RD in Vista 64 filtering them out for some reason?

Thanks
Kevan

Hello,

Running a brand new ASUS windows 8 based desktop. CTRL+C and CTRL+V work only partially, when I am using them many times they don't paste or copy (though they do some of the time) but they make my browser open a window or switch tabs or like make the right click menu pop up. It is so bizarre, I don't know if it's a bug or what, has anyone else experienced this? It is very annoying when I am so used to doing it.

A:CTRL+C and CTRL+V Problems

Hello kjelljs,

FYI, I have not experienced that problem. The ctrl +c and ctrl +v work consistently for me. I guess the best thing is to try (at this point) is another keyboard (if you have one available) and if you are currently using a wireless keyboard, maybe try a wired version. Good luck.

I have an HP envy laptop less than 6months old operating on windows 8 and my Ctrl key doesn't work as it should.I know the Ctrl key itself is not broken as it works when pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete or Ctrl + Left mouse key to open links in new tab and Ctrl + P to print. However the shortcuts as Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V, Ctrl + X don't work at all. This is the case in all programmes including word, Excel and Firefox. Ctrl + Insert and Shift + Insert do work for copy and paste function but frankly they are far less convenient. Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated as it's very frustrating. Thank you

A:ctrl c and ctrl v not working

Hello jc84ox,

You?re not able to use your copy and paste function.

Go to device manager and uninstall the keyboard. Restart the computer.

Do a hard reset.
Once the computer is off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

Turn the computer back on.

Open up command prompt and run the following command SFC /scannow.

This will scan the system files and correct any errors that it can.

Here is a link to command prompt.

When you go to open command prompt, right click and run as administrator.

If the function was working in the past you might try a system restore.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly without affecting your personal files.

Windows 8 has a new feature which will uninstall and reinstall windows without affecting your files.

Here is a link to both options if you would like to give either of them a try.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Recently i've encountered this problem with CTRL C and V unable to copy or paste anything anywhere. Able to do so with mouse where right click copy paste works for that. CTRL F works which means ctrl button is functional. i've tried restoring to an earlier restore point, ran SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker but no errors. I still can't solve this problem.. I've clicked on all the relevant search results from google but none works for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:ctrl c ctrl v not working.

Do CTRL-C , that should place something in clipboard. Then paste by using mouse right click->paste. Works?

Right click and select copy. Then paste using CTRL-V. Works?

I was unable to find this topic in a forum search. Other forums discuss it, but they usually recommend turning on Autocomplete for Web addresses. I think there is another solution, because I do not have this problem on another computer that has that option turned off.

Spyware? Maybe, but I do run SpyBot SD's Teatime most of the time on my XP computer that is having this problem. Is there a setting in SpyBot that I need to tweak? This problem just showed up one day. I have not checked for spyware problems since the problem surfaced.

One other thing, I do run Cleanup on a regular basis. Maybe it deleted something and caused a setting to change?

Again, please do not suggest turning on Autocomplete for Web addresses. If that is the only solution, then I will live with this problem for now. I also do not want to go to a system restore point, because I do not know how far back that will take me and I have had spyware in the distant past.

Hello,

I had malware called web search on my computer that was causing page redirects in google. I tried running ad-aware and came across a place that said to download hi-jack this to clear up some of it so I did all of that. It didn't get rid of it but it wasn't a huge issue so I got tired of trying to get rid of it and just dealt with it and stopped using google. However, yesterday it redirected me to a site that started downloading things to my computer. One of those things was a virus or something called Protection Center. I followed the instructions on here to get rid of it with Malware Bytes and that found it and deleted it. However, the virus had already disabled my programs and ctrl+alt+del and even after I ran the malware bytes and removed the infected files the shortcuts and ctrl+alt+del still doesn't work.

-When I try to click a shortcut or go to run a program from the start menu it says "Please choose the program you want to use to open this file" and shows a list of programs to open it with. I would take a screen shot of what it says but I can't open any programs to do that in.
-When I try to do ctrl+alt+del it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator".
-Also, when I close Internet explorer it tells me "iexplore.exe - Application Error" and then below that it says "The instruction at "0x028e7776" referenced memory at "0x6bf54c08".

I am used to typing the name of an URL in the address bar on IE, then use Ctrl-Shift plus Enter to have http://www. and .com autofilled.

However, somehow this feature suddenly disappeared tonight. First when trying the same, it led to Google search, but, after rebooting, it now gives me an error mesage:
You were looking for "backchina" but that domain is not on this server.
Apache/2.2.8 (Fedora) Server at plus.vern.com Port 80
This occurs to any addresses.
XP Pro, IE 7.0.

Thanks.

Hi, I came accross this forum when googling my problem and I saw similar issues but nothing that covered my specific problem. I would really appreciate any help!

Basically, there a couple of things...

(1) When I start my PC up, a pop-up appears. It re-appears roughly every 5 minutes. Showing different adverts for Poker etc..

(2) When I do ctrl + alt + delete, I get a message saying that it has been disabled by the administrator. ]

There may be other things but I haven't noticed anything strange as of yet... I really don't know where this has come from as I'm careful about which sites I visit and am careful when opening E-mails...

I'm at my wits end. Hopefully, you guys (or gals) can help... I could not run Panda Activescan because I could not connect to the page. And, as of right this second, I have no way of getting the program "Combofix" on my computer because I cannot connect to that page either. Any help is appreciated.

Edit: I ran Spybot S&D and it returned "Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.TaskManager" as a problem. I selected "fix problems" and now Ctrl+alt+delete works again. Earlier, I ran avast and it returned I had 4 infections so I deleted them, but the problem has persisted.
