Early benchmarks for the HD4870 are out

Q: Early benchmarks for the HD4870 are out

Our AMD rep gave us the green light to post some preliminary benchmarks of the HD4870s in single and CrossFireX setups. We have the stats on our forums, check it out!

It certainly looks promising for the Reds considering the pricepoint they are offering their HD4800 series cards.

Preferred Solution: Early benchmarks for the HD4870 are out

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Early benchmarks for the HD4870 are out

Whoops, realized that the thread title said "3870". The cards are actually the new 4870s. Darned "3" and "4" are easy to hit by mistake.

OK so im planning to build a gaming PC in the next 6months ( i started a thread in the hardware/devices section) and i was originally going for a HD4870x2 but i dont think im going to have he funds for that so i have been looking at a few other cards: ATI 1gb HD4870 (750/900mhz), PowerColor 1gb HD4870 (overclocked 780/925mhz) and the ATI 1gb HD4890 (850/950-1000mhz? not sure). Anyway i was just wondering what people opinions were on these cards and what version or brand should i get?

A:ATI HD4870, PowerColor HD4870 PCS+ or ATI HD4890

Go the 4890. It's newer and quicker than the 4870. It will leave an option for 4890 crossfire down the track.

Q: Hd4870

Well i have sorted all my other problems with my pc out and now i am gonna probably make a new one.
That is unless i ask for your assistance. Which i am doing.
I am getting a new GPU ATI Radeon HD4870
The market leading GPU i think. It costs uite a bit and so does my computer. So, i dont want to mess up the install.
I know there are guides and i know how to put it in but i have a few questions.
I have a SLI array at the moment, two nvidia 7950 GPUs, i soubt it, but woth a shot,

Is it possible to make a SLI/Crossifre array. So i have one of my nvidia GPUs working with my new ATI GPU. If it is possible is there a downside?

Not to do with the GPU but anyways, I have a 64 bit intel processor, i guess that is the only thing i need to allow Vista 64 bit to run.
I think that is all the questions i have at the moment, if i think of anymore i wont hesitate to ask.
I am not getting the components for a few months, i will post about my installation closer to the date.
Thanks in advance

You can't do a Radeon/GF mix array. CF and SLI are very picky about what you use, even of their own kind. Remember to completely remove your own graphics drivers before putting the new card in.

Only the HD 5000 series and above received drivers for Windows 10. I wouldn't recommend upgrading as you may be bad quality with a default driver.

...card is driving me nuts, keeps overheating and cutting out the video. When this happens the monitor goes black (and I have to manually restart the system), I hear the fan spin up to 100% and the LED labeled "D1601" on the card lights up - meaning the card is overheating. This has happened three times in the last 24 hours with fan speeds at 60, 75 and 80%!! I've already applied a better thermal compound on the core which dropped idle temps so I don't know what to do. Is there some other factor I could be overlooking, something else causing the card to overheat like the NB or PCI-E 2.0 chip? I'm at a loss right now so I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance.

So I like to push my hardware, and to do so I get some stable benchmarks. My Gigabyte Radeon 4870 (512mb Gddr5) has seen me through from my last Core 2 Duo system and into my current Phenom II system, and it has given me no problems until now. I benchmarked the card in the old core2 system with no problems that I recalled.

I do it in the Phenom II (Windows 7 RC1 64) system and as soon as the temps on the card hit 72-74 degC I hear a sizzling sound that sounds sort of like bacon... Of course I quit the benchmark (with beating heart) and the sound stops, presumably as the 4870 declocks itself for normal Windows use. No doubt at all that this is heat related, but graphics cards are built to withstand ridiculous heat, in fact the Catalyst Control Centre's temp gauge pegs 70C in the 'yellow' area and the danger area is above 100C.

I can play World of Warcraft or Half Life 2 (ep2) on full settings @ 1680x1050 without problems, however I they are not too intensive, and I have no better games down in my campus residence - but I can see Cysis racking up that temp and the bacon sound scares me!

What shall I do? I really would like to overclock the GPU...

Hi everyone, I just installed build 7100 of Windows 7 (first time trying the OS) and am having an annoying issue. I have a widescreen monitor but play a lot of old games, so I rely on GPU scaling to properly use 4:3 resolutions. This works fine in Vista but in my new Win7 installation the option isnt even available in CCC.

So, what the hell? This is pretty much a deal breaker for me. Back to Vista for now

A:Catalyst 9.4 + HD4870 = no GPU scaling

At least you get the CCC to load.!
It will not open for me (no errors in event viewer etc). Even though it is installed and I can select it by right clicking on the desktop it simply fails to work. I'm using x64 7100.

I have read of another person who can't load CCC and I would imagine that there are still issues with the ATI drivers and W7 - you can fill out a bug report, if you can't get it resolved...

I'm usually pretty good when it comes to diagnosing and debunking video problems, but this one has me at a complete loss; of course, it's my own flippin' system... awesome. I can't figure out why my 4870 keeps crashing on me whilst gaming, it doesn't make any sense. I think I might just RMA the card eventually but I'd like to see what other people think about the issue first. The last thing I need is to have the replacement card do the same exact thing... which is typically my luck.

The card lasts, on average, about 2 hours before the screen goes black; the behavior after that seems completely random. Sometimes, I get a NO SIGNAL message and have to restart the system manually, and other times, VPU recover will restart the card thus returning video. VisionTek support told me that if the screen was going black that meant the card was overheating. Sometimes, I hear the fan go to 100% when the video cuts out so I'm thinking they might be right. However, I run the fan at ~60%+ when I run games so it seems highly unlikely. I have also applied OCZ FreeZe thermal compound to the core which dropped the "out-of-the-box" temps about 10c! The card never passes 50c on full load w/ the fan running above 50%. Could the vRAM be overheating?

I have tried ATI catalyst drivers 8.8 through 8.10 with absolutely no effect on this crashing. I have tried tweaking settings w/ both RivaTuner and CCC and I have even flashed the card's BIOS via thumb ... Read more

1. Uninstall the drivers from Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel of Windows.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Run Driver Sweeper*, select the drivers that you have uninstalled and click Clean button.
4. Install the new drivers.

* For Windows Vista users, please run Driver Sweeper in administrator mode.
Right mouse click Driver Sweeper shortcut and click Run as administrator.

To download and install Driver Sweeper, please click HERE. (direct link)

I've been having a slight problem running Far Cry 2 on my computer lately, seems to be my video card. I have tried running the game from Medium all the way to Very High settings and the result is the same. After about 45 min or so of smooth gameplay my fps start to plummet, almost making the game unplayable (~15fps). I'm pretty sure this video card should be able to chew right through this game no problem so I am a bit concerned with the performance. I thought it could just be the HDR effects and AA I was using but I've played with everything and this happens each time. I have checked the GPU temps which do not rise above 50c so I don't think that it's the card itself. The game did install a new version of DirectX 9 so maybe a fresh reinstall of drivers would possibly do the trick? Thoughts?

Also, I am running my Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz, which is 800mhz above the recommended CPU speed for this game.

A:Far Cry 2 with HD4870 512MB Runs Slow

Well I guess the problem isn't with the drivers or DirectX because I tried it again today and it was worse than ever. Total slide show during firefights, couldn't be more than 5fps in some spots, which is absolutely unacceptable for this system considering what I've put into it. I have to say that the game itself isn't all that great either so I'm not gonna cry (no pun intended) about it. This card ran Crysis just fine so I'm just confused as to why this game runs like sh** on my system.

On a side note, I ran Driver Sweeper on the previous install of drivers and now CCC doesn't work at all, won't even open! So now I'm using the latest build of RivaTuner to adjust the card's settings (which didn't make a difference). I thought that was a little peculiar as well...

Hello everyone!

I've recently bought a new rig and decided to go with Vista Enteprise 64-bit version on it.

I currently have a 30" Dell monitor and a 19" Packard Bell Maestro 190W setup that I used on my previous XP rig.
Now, when I try to use my PB Maestro 190" Screen on the Vista machine, I get no signal. I can detect the monitor through the ATI Catalyst program but it cant it to work.

The monitor works and shows stuff when I reload the computer, but it goes "No signal" just when Vista Loads...
I have downloaded Powerstrip and another monitor program to try and force it to 1440x900 settings, but still no signal.. Even wrote my own drivers for the screen with a fixed resolution 640x) but no luck.
I plugged in my LCD TV instead and it worked like a charm! So i quickly switched the cables between the second 19" monitor and the TV and bam! I got the second monitor up and running!

But I had to reload the computer and I lost the output, tried several times again to repeat the procedure with plugging in the TV and then the monitor.. no luck...
The only thing I havent tried yet is to use a VGA cable instead of the DVI one..
I'm running the lastest ATI drivers (9.3)..

Just find it strange that it can detect the screen, just not send the video signals to it..

Vista installs the second monitor as a "generic pnp monitor".. And I cant seem to find any drivers on this packard bell monitor on the internet.
Anyone got a good advice ... Read more

Every time I try to install either an HD4870 or GTX260 on my system (spec below) the system crashes just as it loads the drivers. Strangely the HD2350 and HD2480 cards I've tried work no problem. The system also runs no problem when using onboard graphics.

At first I thought it was the graphics card so tried the various cards as above, but when the problem was still there after trying the HD4870 and GTX260 I thought it must be a motherboard problem. However, i've now had 3(!) new motherboards and the problem remains, so that rules the motherboard out I think, unless it's some obscure compatibly issue. I know all the cards are OK as I've taken them out of other systems where they work fine.

*All drivers/bios up to date
*Multiple clean installs of drivers (including core drivers with no CCC for example. Also tried older and newer drivers)
*Multiple clean install of the OS
*No system problems with any other components as far as I can tell. (I've ran memtest and CPU stress tests)

OS: W7x64 SP1
Mobo: ASUS P8H67-M (B3 revision)
CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge)
PSU: Corsair HX520 (this should run the system no problem)

dmp file attached. (When using the HD4870)

A:HD4870 and GTX260 crash system, HD2350 doesn't. Why?

Have you tried testing a new power supply? If older/onboard graphics works no problem, your PSU might not be handling the power from the newer GPUs properly.

I just built an HTPC wiith Vista64 SP1 and am having a problem. I have a DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 motherboard and a VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 Video card with HD audio. I have an HDMI cable going to my Sony AV receiver and all I get is Stereo Audio. The subwoofer never comes out of standby nor does the AV receiver indicate anything but a stereo input.

I have the RealTek HDMI audio device installed and it says it is working properly under Device Manager. Under properties all that is offered is Stereo speakers. Surround Sound is shown as an option but it is grayed out and not selectable. All drivers are up to date as of two days ago, and I have the on-board sound of the motherboard disabled in its BIOS.

Other HDMI devices, such as my XBOX 360, do surround sound through the Sony AV receiver.

VisionTek support told me to install the HDMI RealTek driver, but that's all the help they've been able to give me.

If anyone has some additional insight on this, it would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

A:Surround Sound option Grayed out with HD4870 and HDMI connection

Honestly I think that HDMI can sometimes be flaky. I know you said the 360 works fine, but a PC is another animal entirely. I've Never used a HDMI connection to carry BOTH vid/sound FOR THE PC (will run HDMI for vid, but always run separate sound).

If your PC is close to the AV receiver.....A suggestion just to test is -- enable the MB sound and run a cable from the MB to your receiver (digital Optical [toslink] OR coax digital) if you have it, or you can do 3.5mm analog with a Y cable that is 3.5mm to RCA.

How To Connect Your PC to Your Home Stereo or Home Theater | Hardware Secrets

See if that works & then you know the bottleneck is the HDMI somehow & maybe drivers will fix it later, but for now you have (separate) sound that works.

I just got a new laptop and was wondering what kinds of benchmarks would be good to make sure it performs as well as it should. I'd like to know how to compare it to similarly configured laptops in games and multimedia applications.

Also, is there a way for me to see the make of RAM I have. I know how to find out the amount, but it never says the manufacturer.

A quick search for laptop benchmark came up with this CNet page. It shows how they benchmark their laptops, and what programs they use to do it. Worth giving a quick read, at least.

To find out the make of your ram, you can run CPU-Z. It's free, you can download it by clicking the link under 'latest version' in the top left corner of that page. When you run it, click the SPD tab, and it will show vendor information, if it's possible to show it for your system. Some RAM manufacturers don't show, I think. Otherwise, you could just open your memory access panel on your laptop, and take the sticks out (while the laptop is off, of course), there should be a sticker or model number or something on them. Put the number into Google and see what comes up. Good luck!

I have seen postings about computers being slow. Are there any benchmarks that one can use to see if the computer is running as well as expected, given the RAM and the processor speed? Many thanks.

A:Speed benchmarks?

When people say there computer is running slow, they normally mean its running 'slower' than it used to and want to know why. This is normally down to spyware, background processes, fragged harddrive plus any number of things.

As for benchmarking, there are many types Dhrystone, Whetstone, PCMark, plus ones for graphics cards (3D mark), look at the following sites www.futuremark.com and www.sisoftware.net.

However be aware that whole subject of benchmarking is a bit more subjective, the same cpu on a different motherboard will give different benchmarks even though the cpu is clocked the same. So just because your setup doesnt give exactly the same as someone with 'apparently' the same setup, its not worth trying to track down why (all very clever electronic magic)! Oh and benchmarks do not always represent a true real-life performance.

Assuming these benchmarks are valid tests of system performance, is there something I can to improve the performance on the SY-7ISA+ system (Computer #2)?

I've set jumpers for the automatic detection of processor speed. What is the correct PCI clock setting and clock ratio for this processor? I'm using 133Mhz X5.

Does a Celeron processor provide improved performance over a similar speed VIA Cyrex?

Is there a better benchmark test for these systems? I believe Computer #2 should outperform Computer #1, but maybe I'm missing something.

A couple of weeks ago I tried unsuccessfully to install Visual Studio 6 on my XP Home SP2 box. Since then, the performance has been poor. One thing probably has nothing to do with the other but that's when I started to notice that Firefox took 10 to 15 seconds to load and the XP splash screen stayed up longer on a reboot. I've defragmented and run and error check on the hard drive and it has no bad sectors. This evening I downloaded FreshDiagnose and benchmarked the read and write speeds of the hard drive. The read speed is excellent -- over 200 MB/s but the write speed is pathetic -- 3.47 MB/s. This is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320 GB SATA-II drive (the parallel recording technology.)

The CD benchmarks are pretty low too. I have a Memorex 16X DL DVD+-RW but the read speed is 3.67 MB/s.

These are all connected to Gigabyte 965SP motherboard having a Pentium D 3.4 gHz processor. Not overclocked and the temps and fan speeds are within normal ranges.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I just upgraded due to a PIII 450MHZ chip ceasing to function. I went to a PIII 650E chip on the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard. I had the same motherboard with the PIII 450 and it was working fine for about a year, and that upgrade was from a micro-ATX motherboard for more slots and higher max on the CPU upgrade. When I took the computer in to have it checked for not booting they originally thought it was the motherboard and replaced it with a new one, but later found that it was the processor. So the Gigabyte GA-6VXE+ motherboard and the PIII 650E chip are new. I had just re-formatted the hard drive for a fresh start and installed the normal programs and Norton Utilities 2000. Under the Norton UT 2000 system benchmarks my PIII 650 was getting fluctuating benchmarks from anywhere between 50.0 to 301.0. The computer's performance also coincided with whatever system benchmark that came up running slow with low system benchmarks and normal with the high benchmarks. I thought at first it may be the voltage supplied to the CPU but the motherboard is auto detecting voltage. I feel that I'm heading down the same road as my previous processor, and while everything is still under warranty, I want this taken care of as soon as possible. Can you help?

Its in German or Dutch or something, but shows a Clawhammer clocked at 800mhz beating a P4 clocked at 1600mhz, in 32bit applications

Some Clawhammer Benchmarks

A:Some Benchmarks For The Clawhammer

Interesting! Slower RAM & 1/3 the FSB too! :grinthumb

Intel has their work cut out for 'em & us consumers will hopefully see some big price cuts coming from them.

Looks like high Mhz isn't necessarily 'better'.

I was looking at this article that was comparing benchmarks of low-end processors. Generally they looked at Celeron, P4, Duron, and Athlon processors on the Anandtech website:

This test showed that the 1.6Gig Duron Processor and the P4 1.8A Gig Processor both out performed the Intel Celeron Processors. They only tested the one P4 Processor, and it was the cheapest one available on the market. I think a slower P4 processor would actually be a better buy, but Intel just does not make them. They would be a better buy than the Celeron's Available.

The Bottom line is a Celeron is not worth buying. They are basically junk. I think a 256k L2 Cache would significantly improve their performance. The present 128k L2 cache is just not large enough for the processor speed. So Buyer beware.

The 300a Celeron was the only worthwhile Celeron chip. It could OC to 450 & wasn't as crippled as the new versions have been ( slow FSB, small & crippled Cache, overall lackluster performance ).

For people that only use the PC for Office work, I guess it's not so bad. They don't heat much so they generally have very silent cooling systems.

Other then that, I don't see why anyone would want such a chip.

Dear frens, my request is a bit long but please dont get bored reading it. Any suggestions will be most welcome. I will acknowledge my results.

My system specs are on the bottom of this page.

1) what is th difference between the nforce4 AMD platform driver and the other AMD/INTEL X16 driver?

2)My A64 3500+ (manchester) 2.2 GHZ is OCed to 2.5 GHZ thru the bios and clockgen . Do i need 2 adjust any voltage, FSB etc etc settings? (am noob in OCing !!)

3) what GPU and CPU tempetature is ok for BFG 7800GT OC (OCed to 500/1150) Is it too high? Should i go to 450/1100? Please look in my system specs for hardware info.

4?is it ok to put my case (with the right panel removed ie motherboad backsite) directly on the airflow of my Room airconditioner (16 degree C) or am i harming my rig withj iths type of cooling??

5) when i run CPU benchmarks during 3dmark05 pro and 3Dmark06 pro
my rig crawls at only 0,1,2 fps. is it normal?

6) N just 1 more thing i ve posted my benchmarks below. what do u think of the results? Normal? High? or Low?

Hi everyone.
I`m out here hoping anyone could help me with my problem..
So. My R9 280X one day stopped working properly. It allows to launch the PC and use it. But when i launch any game it works until any 3D action happens. Couple of times i`ve launched GAUNTLET and saw a lot of ARTIFACTS in menu, whcih closes and exits to a desktop.
This happens with every game. It just laggs for a second or two (sound plays tho) And exits to Desk without any information.
Also All the GPU benchmarks Freeze after a few secs of work (sometimes whole PC so i have to restart it). I`ve noticed no exact GPU load or temperature numbers (it stays below 50-55).
But one benchmark (userbenchmark.com) managed to go through and showed extremely poor GPU results of ~10%(way below normal in 3D).
Also when i surf around on my pc quickly(swapping between windows and scrolling intensly) image freezes, turns black for a milisecond and goes back to normal condition as `twas. huh..
I`ve peeked into logs and it says AMDKMDAP stopped responding, which means drivers. (also there are some "kernel" errors if that mean anything..)
I used DDU and installed all kind of drivers which didnt help too. I reinstalled windows even.
Also radeon software shows a notification that it detected more than one displays connected while i`m using one.
I`ve swapped between VGA and HDMI. (before all these happened methinks i used both at the same time once, but i dont think its related.
MemTest didnt show anything to... Read more

How do I go about improving a CIS score? I'm confused about the benchmarks. Is this just a list of recommended settings?

A:Belarc: CIS Benchmarks?

You'd need to change the settings that are shown as failing. They give a description of each, but don't mention where to change them though.
Many are set using the Local Security Policy tool, or the Group Policy Editor. Neither of which comes with XP Home. You can edit the registry directly to change settings though.

This link lists many of the registry keys that have to be edited directly, and lists the recommended settings.
For XP Home, the Group Policy Settings Reference spreadsheet can be searched for a specific setting to find the key to set in XP Home.

To set File permissions, you need to turn off simple file sharing (Control Panel | Folder Options | View, uncheck Use simple file sharing, last item). For XP Home, you'll need to reboot to safe mode to see the security tab, or download the two reg files from this post of Elvandil's. Be sure to run the undo reg file when done.

These are just recommendations, and are geared more for a business environment rather than a home environment. The Auditing settings for example, forcing users to change passwords, only allowing strong passwords, minimum length, etc, might not be useful at home.

My score has never been higher than 1.88.

Hi everybody.
this is my first post on TechSpot...
and I`d like to ask a question(or two or three):what about the x1950pro AGP?
anybody seen it work?
will it really be coming?
Have I spent 200.-? on the wrong card?([email protected])

A:x1950pro AGP!anyone seen any benchmarks?

Funny thing, we were just discussing this in the Socket 478 thread in the cpu/chipset forum.

I don't believe there is any hard data on this and it's likely just a rumor right now. Similar rumors occurred when Diamond made a typo on their website and listed an X1800 as AGP when it was a cut/paste job overlooked from an X800 HTML page they modified for the X1800.

I'd imagine hkpc or Tom's/Anannd's will get some solid info should there actually be any hint of an AGP based X1950. For now, it looks like the X1650 series will get the best chance of an AGP flavor.. but the X1950 is still only "rumor" material as I know of no local oem's with even so much as a future SKU or partner hint for the units.

speakeasy speed test today! no joke.....

16215 kbps down (fastest ive ever seen it in 6 months)

1479 up

also.. Comcast just announces some new modem/router that is capable of 150Mbits/sec down

how they gunna do it???

looks like they're gunna multiplex 4 separate coax cables into one (Super Modem) line per house.
this makes sense.. because i think the theoreticcal limit for coax is approx 30Mbits/sec (ish) per line.

wonder how much that'll be a month...

During my research on AMD CPUs for my next computer I came across this page of benchmark figures. Unfortunately, although it is obvious that the A64 3400+ processor is faster than the A64 3000+ processor, the numbers mean nothing to me so I am not sure just how much faster it is.

For a task such as video encoding using either the Athlon 64 3000+, 3200+ or 3400+ processor would the difference be something like 10 to 30 seconds or five to 10 minutes??

What about normal everyday tasks? When would the difference in speed actually be noticeable and by how much?

Would a kind person be able to translate and put these figures into perspective for me please?
