Solved: Windows doesn't detect HDD on startup

Q: Solved: Windows doesn't detect HDD on startup

Hi there,

I'm running Windows XP sp3 and have a 500G Transcend USB external hard drive without external power and all was working very well, but suddenly Windows doesn't detect my hdd on startup, the Safely Remove Hardware item appears in the system tray and is showing the presence of the drive but it doesn't assign a drive letter to it and it also doesn't appear in My Computer untill I unplug it then replug it. Does anyone have a solution for this annoying problem. A little help is appreciated very much, thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Windows doesn't detect HDD on startup

The problem seems to be the HDD itself because i've tried another external HDD and it's working fine, what possibly can be the problem it's a very new HDD?

I tried to install Ubuntu and failed. i removed it using the ubuntu boot-repair so i will at least have my windows 7 back. now i get the message "Bootmgr is missing", and the windows repair (the one from the installation disc) doesn't even recognize my hard drive. when i'm loading the ubuntu installation or boot-repair it does recognize my hard drive.

i backed up all my files in case i need to format and install windows 7 again, but right now i can't do that because the installation disc doesn't detect my hard drive.

any suggestions?

Just curious, why are you still running ubuntu's installation or boot repair? I appreciate the fact you may just be testing things, but I would suggest leaving well enough alone.

Hello everyone. The problem is with my CPU fan/motherboard. For some reason my computer doesn't detect my CPU fan. The CPU fan runs but when I start up my computer I have to press F1 everytime to bypass the system error. I hope nothing serious is wrong and it's just a mis-communication with my CPU fan and motherboard bios. I recently just installed a new CPU fan from Zalman CPNS9500A. What should I try to do to correct this issue?

Hello all. I decided to switch to the newest version of the Forceware drivers for my Geforce 4 4200Ti graphics card today. I was running the 61.77 Forceware drivers, and planned on switching to the 71.84 (latest certified version) drivers. I created a System Restore point in XP, and then removed my old drivers via the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Control Panel. I then restarted my computer, and on startup Windows autodetected my graphics card. I cancelled out of the autodetect wizard in order to run the 71.84 install file, which I had already downloaded. Upon executing the install file, the drivers were unzipped to the temporary NVIDIA folder, but immediately after this I got an error message saying the NVIDIA installation could not detect a compatible display device.

I also tried getting windows to detect my card through the Add New Hardware util, but windows was unable to see my card there. I have no idea what could be causing this problem whatsoever. I was thinking maybe you folks could help me out with this one. Thanks for your time.

A:Solved: Forceware 71.84 doesn't detect my card!

You should not cancel the Found New Hardware Wizard but let it go through so that Windows installs its generic drivers. Once they are install the Forceware installation should work.

Never had this problem before with a motherboard not detecting a drive. Is it a BIOS issue that will be resolved once updated?

Check my spec page on user profile for my system info if this helps provide more info. It is running v4.1 and I can upgrade that to 4.3.

What happens is it will not detect the other HDD that windows is not installed on, but it didn't detect before any OS was installed on either drive, and this issue has been interchangeable between both HDDs. And each time Windows 7 setup detects both drives, not always - until I hot plug out and back in but it shows up then. Both HDDs show up when in windows but I run the risk of not being able to boot into windows having it connected. So as you can gather it is not RAID 0 as I normally have setup but AHCI for now. It is a new system and HDDs are healthy, pass all tests - and only a few months old.

I've not used AHCI mode before so howcome when I hotplug a HDD windows detects it but doesn't show up in computer, only under computer management? Only I could do with hotpluggin in a 2TB HDD I have that has backed up data on which I want to organised and move to another HDD so I can format it, I think it might be corrupted file system or something because when I hotplug it windows crashes whereas it never used to under my old system - this happens whether I use USB dock or SATA connection - hot plugging.

Advice much appreciated, thanks.

Hello,

So i want to switch the HDD's of my 2 computers, i unplugged both drives, then i put one of the drives into the other computer attaching it exactly as it was (the master slave thingy) but the comp said it didn't detect and master or slave. So i took it out again and changed the master slave thingy so that it was the same as the HDD that i took out of the computer i was trying to get this HDD to work in.

Same thing happened, comp said it didn't detect any HDD at all.

Why can't it detect it?

Both drives are unformatted and have windows and stuff on them, i thought it'd be a simple switch a roo.

Does this mean that the HDD is not compatible in this other computer?

Or do i need to do something to make the computer detect the HDD?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Computer doesn't detect hard drive

I assume they are not being seen on the bios - correct

check the details on the HDD and make sure you have set to Master - what else is on the cable .....

are these identical machines ? because with windows you have installed all the motherboard drivers and even if you swap them around and get the bios to recognise them - windows may not work correctly

When my systems goes BSOD and restarts, I have that screen where I can choose which mode I should restart (safe mode, etc...) However Windows doesn't detect my keyboard during that screen and I am forced to wait 30 sec and boot in normal mode automatically.

Now this wouldn't be that much of a problem but I need to update the defective firmware of one of my HDD. And I use a boot disk to do that and of course the boot disk doesn't recognize my keyboard. So this became a major problem and I can lost my hdd data anytime now.

My mouse and keyboards both use an usb port, I suspect that I need traditional mouse and keyboard using traditional ports.

I have a traditional mouse but I do not have a traditional keyboard unfortunately. But I have converters from usb to traditional port for both mouse and keyboard.

What I tested:
1. plug-in the traditional mouse and reboot, result the traditional mouse is recognized.

2. use the usb to traditional port for the mouse and reboot, it doesn't recognize the mouse

3. use the usb to traditional port for the keyboad and reboot, it doesn't recognize the keyboard

Any clue on how to have keyboard recognized as traditional please?

TIA

Check 'Device Manager' for any yellow triangles, if there are any check for new drivers from your OEM or motherboard website.

The second display shows a black screen with the message "Cannot Display This Video Mode".

right click on desktop for "display settings" - pick the monitor that shows up that message -> click it to activate -> switch correct video mode for it. its prolly too high resolution issue.

also WIN+P -combination gives you chance to use "extended desktop" which you should use to configure the resolutions

I just got my HP laptop a brand new Windows Vista installed, but the guy who installed it didn't have time to go over all the details, and I was supposed to register it myself. I didn't think it would be a big deal, but when I tried to connect to the internet... I couldn't. I thought it I had just turned off the wireless adapter and pressed the button ... but nothing happened. The biggest surprise was when I opened the "Menage network connections" menu and there was nothing (there used to be a Wireless and a Broadcom network adapter icons). I tried installing some wireless drivers ... but again nothing.
Can you please help me, because I'm running out of ideas

I have a nice Logitech 120 headset that has great microphone quality, but it and any other microphone I plug in to my computer are not detected at all. The speakers in the headset work fine, but the microphone doesn't work. It has separate jacks for the headphone part and the microphone part.

My computer dual-boots with Windows XP 32-bit as well as Windows 7 64-bit, and everything works fine under Windows XP, so it's not the microphones or the hardware.

I tried updating my audio driver, but it appears to be up to date, and I tried using XP's audio driver under Windows 7, which didn't work at all.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Windows 7 Doesn't Detect Microphones, but XP on same Computer Does

Windows XP handles some audio functions differently than Vista/Win7/Win 8. Thus the reason the XP drivers do not work.

First thought on the Win 7 drivers, use the Intel provided drivers for your motherboard, as a first choice. I had an older Win 7 PC with an Intel motherboard and only the Intel provided drivers worked correctly.

Hello, i have a problem with my soundcard.
This is a separate sound card, so it's not a part of my motherboard.
The name of the soundcard is: "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI Sound Card"
The card and my optical sound (i use an optical cable for digital sound, which no longer works when i switch to "S/PDIF" sound in sound devices.) no longer works. When i go to device manager, it doesn't even detect that i have my specified soundcard, which i absolutely do.

Also after the re-install, my computer feels really slow. I have 16 gigs of ram, a good CPU, and a good graphics card, so that is not the problem. If anyone could figure out or have an idea what could be wrong with those two issues, PLEASE do reply.

I fear that after my Windows 7 re-install, a ton of drivers are missing. I don't have my 'recovery hard disc' anymore, which contained a lot of stuff for my PC. The computer store who installed my sound card, graphics card and more, removed that hard drive. I didn't notice that before i had to do a re-install, and they don't have that darn hard disc anymore.

Can anyone help me? Do i have to do something in BIOS? I'll attach a DxDiag of my computer to this post! Please help me!

A:My PC doesn't detect my soundcard after Windows 7 re-install.

You are probably missing needed drivers. Since you have an intel CPU, you have a motherboard with an Intel chipset. Go to the motherboard vendor and download the needed drivers, including the Intel chipset drivers. One of the main things the chipset drivers do is define (identify) all the hardware devices on or attached to the motherboard.

I didn't see what the motherboard was in DXDiag, the BIOS should give you that information. Manufacturer and model. Then go to that manufacturers downloads for the specific model motherboard. If there are no Windows 7 drivers listed, Vista drivers are compatible.

In addition, since you are using a separate sound card, you need to disable the on-board audio (the RealTek) in the BIOS. Two sound devices can conflict which could cause some of your problems.

About a day or two ago, my computer really slowed down. For instance, winrar takes much much longer to extract a 50-70 mb file (before it would take 3 secs, now it takes around 15 secs). The music I play with VLC media player sometimes gets sloppy, music gets distorted when doing multiple tasks, something it didn't do before. In fact, just now as I was extracting a rar file AND playing music, the music sounded messed up. There are a lot of other indications of slowing down (defraggler -> analyze taking MUCH more time and freezing my computer at certain % intervals, 17, 35, etc).

so I ran a few virus scans, mbam, avast. and nothing came up. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Wow, that's odd indeed! Do you see them in Device Manager? If not, try and do a search for new hardware. Also, if your familiar with navigating the BIOS, make sure those devices didn't get disabled somehow. You may even want to try unplugging those devices, and adding them back to the system one at a time.

Well,

Yes, Win 7 has detected an audio device. What it's not detecting is that you have speakers plugged in.

Do you have a set of speakers you can plug into the back (green) speaker jack?

Or maybe a set of headphones into the front (green) headphone jack?

If it didn't detect any devices you wouldn't see those options.

Right now you're set to output audio to "Digital Out", it's set as the default output device, plug speakers in, select "Speakers" then click on "Set Default".

Greetings. I am experiencing issues with my system and would like to post my system info for additional support.

INITIAL SYMPTOMS: while surfing the internet, Windows detected a malicious file (notified via pop-up in taskbar), followed by an immediate system reboot. Windows would no longer boot. Upon further investigation, my boot drive priorities in the BIOs were altered. Once I returned to original boot order, system would still not boot into windows. I then ran MBR fix and was able to boot into windows successfully. No files are missing, but internet connection is much slower. Kasperski (installed prior to initial system errors) will no longer complete a full scan. Hangs at 60%. Additionally, Windows no longer recognizes it's existence as protection or firewall coverage. Also, windows takes about 5-10 minutes to shutdown. Used to take about 1 minute MAX. Uninstalled, and re-installed Kaspersky ... same issue (reset WMI to see if WIN7 would recognize Kaspersky, no luck. Called NortonLive support and they were able to install Norton 360 and insist that there are no longer any viruses or malware. Upon checking windows error logs, I am receiving numerous errors that I never logged before incident. Windows reports an io error with DRIVE 4. physically removed drive. no luck. Same error. I also noticed that Windows reports different SATA port connections vs. BIOS. Example ... in BIOs C:\OS is SATA CHANNEL 0. In WINDOWS under properties, its listed as SATA CHANNEL 2.

I found some drivers for this motherboard online and it worked for the audio but I just can't seem to get the LAN working.

This is the page I got the drivers from: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pro...uID=24&LanID=0

I don't know how to install the LAN drivers.

The audio ones only worked when I did Windows XP SP3 compatibility on the EXE. I tried the same thing with the LAN but it said it couldn't find the NIC....am I doing something wrong?

A:Windows 7 doesn't detect/recognize Ethernet Adapter

It sounds very much as though your hardware is incompatible with Windows 7.

Before you tried to upgrade you really needed to download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which will flag up any hardware issues.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

If you can find a Windows 7 driver for your LAN adapter you need to download it, save it to your hard drive and install it from there or go into device manager, select your LAN adapter, right-click it and select Update Driver Software.

My best advice to you is to reinstall Windows XP, and then run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

I have a Thinkpad T470 (20JN) with a 512 Gb NVMe drive  lense20512gmsp34meat2ta. Linux was installed & works well with no problems. But I'm struggling with Windows 10  setup.I could not make its installer recognize NVMe disk. At the same time Hiren's BootCD 15.2 based on Win10 recognizes my disk successfully.I tried to extract drivers from boot.wim using DISM and to add them back to original boot.wim (index:2), but it gave noany positive change. Can you please give me a hint how to make NVMe work ?

Hi,

Ever since the latest WP update (currently on WP8.1 Update, firmware 3051.50009.1424.0003) my Windows 8.1 PC doesn't detect my Lumia. I get "The latest device malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. There is also Unknown USB device (Device descriptor request failed) listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device manager. Nothing under Portable devices section.

What I have tried:
- replacing usb cable (using original one) -> no luck
- soft reset phone -> no luck
- turning the phone off and plug it in -> no go
- manually uninstalling the device from device manager, restarting the PC and try again -> nope
- plugged brother's lumia 930 -> works like a charm

I'm slowly losing my mind, I have no idea what else can I try.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit. Ok so I've got access to laptop, plugging my phone there and the same problem happens at first - the device can't be recognized but a few moments later somehow it gets recognized and connected. The problem seems to be on my PC, can anyone help me out completely removing all the Phone drivers (including registry entries) so I can install them fresh?

Thanks

A:Windows 8.1 doesn't detect Windows Phone (Lumia 1020)

Welcome to the forum sukle.

Can't really help with your problem but a few ideas while you wait for one of the experts to come along and help.

Is your phone completely up to date ? Do you have the 8.1 update on your phone ?

I only have the Lumia 520, I have no problems with this on my 8.1 Update 1 Asus Notebook, I've just plugged it in so of course it's charging, usually charge through the mains adapter so very rarely plug it into the computer as everything can be done from the phone.

Sorry I can't help but I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you out.

Hi,

I'm not sure if it's the correct section, but I have a big problem I need to fix ASAP. I'll describe it from the beginning:
1. PC with Windows 7 x64 worked completely fine one day, I used the sleep functionality.
2. The next day I woke it up. At the first sight everything was ok, logging in worked fine, so did Google Chrome, Filezilla and some other applications. But then I noticed that the sound doesn't work (including the volume button on the bottom bar), also an application that required access to drivers/etc/hosts threw an error. I tried to manually access it to no avail, Windows said it's inaccessible. I tried to restart my PC to see if it helps, but it wasn't the best solution because...
3. ... system didn't boot anymore. It went straight into the repair/recovery mode, I couldn't even safe boot it. The mouse didn't work in that mode and it was hard to do anything (I managed to run it but it did nothing, couldn't even see the error message due to no scroll possibility), so...
4. ... I used a YUMI pendrive with Windows 7 installer .iso. Mouse worked and I managed to run repair on disc E:, where the tool reported to see Windows. I ran it - this time it at least reported MissingOSLoader. I Googled it and followed this: System will not boot to Windows 7 Professional [Solved] - Windows 7 - Windows 7 1. and 2. didn't do anything - /bootrec scanos returned 0 systems. 3. seemed to worked fine until I restarted PC to see a NoOSInstalled error this time. I couldn't fix it so ... Read more

Using Bitlocker is a bad idea.

Reading that gave me a headache

But, mark your OS partition Active, then run startup repair until windows boots.

I'm running Windows 7 Home 64bit. About a week ago, I had an issue with internet connectivity which some fine people here were able to sort out for me. Basically, I found that I couldn't reliably access the internet unless I changed my DNS settings to Open DNS. After I did that, I found I could no longer print any documents even though Windows was still communicating with the printer. I ended up telling Windows to remove the printer and FAX in the hopes of just setting it up again.

However, that didn't work and Windows cannot find the printer at all. I've tried connecting via WLAN and via WPS but even though the printer finds the connection point to the router, Windows can't detect the printer.

My printer is a Canon PIXMA MX922. I've tried contacting Canon but chat but even their email tech support is giving me error messages.

I am not sure how to proceed from here. Could you please help?

Hello everyone,

Recently, I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 2043NWX monitor. It's an used one, but it did work. My computer is an Acer Aspire M3920 (desktop), a more complete configuration can be found in my profile.

My desktop PC connects to my main monitor, an Acer P196HQV via an HDMI to DVI connnector, and my desktop PC connects to my second monitor, the SyncMaster, via VGA.

The problem is, however, the second monitor doesn't work. Win7 does detect a monitor connected via VGA in Control Panel > Appearance and Personalisation > Display > Adjust Screen Resolution, it says in the display box:

Code:
2. Display Device on: VGA.
In the Device Manager it only detected my Acer monitor, but after I downloaded the SyncMaster driver from the official site of Samsung, it detects the SyncMaster instead of the Acer monitor! This isn't the case in Adjust Screen Resolution.

The SyncMaster shows nothing at all, the blue LED, where I can tell the monitor is turned on from, flickers all the time, but the screen doesn't show anything.

I have tried reinstalling the driver, restarting my computer, installing the newest updates for Win7, making the SyncMaster my main monitor, turning off the Acer monitor, but nothing works.

I really hope any of you can help me, and thank you very much for the time you've taken to read this problem of mine.

PS
I have connected an extra monitor to my laptop running Win7 Ultimate x64 too without any problems, so I am not completely unexperienced... Read more

Hi everyone, I got a new mobo and cpu yesterday and after installing all the parts I put my old hdd in, after the pc boots I got an error; no hard disk detected. i know the hdd is fine because i put it back in my old build and it booted fine, i know when installing a new mobo you should format which ive been trying to do but when i reach the window where you choose the language theres no mouse or keyboard working, and i know the mouse and keyboard is fine because i used both in the boot menu. my current specs are p8z68-v asus intel i5 2500k nvidia 560ti asus corsair 850watts 8gb ram 500gb hdd ps; sorry for poor grammar and spelling mistakes but was forced to write this on my phone. Also, i looked in my bios and it clearly names both my hdd and blu ray drive.

A:New mobo doesn't detect HDD, no mouse or keyboard control in Windows setup

First, try the basics. Take out the 560 and just install the RAM, CPU, HDD and PSU and see if you can get to BIOS.
