Q: T470 hard drive upgrade path forward and memory upgrade

Hi, I am planning on upgrading my wife's T470 signature laptop hard drive and ram. Here are my current specs: Part No: 20HDCTO1WWS/N: PF-0ZD0U2? Intel Core i5-7200U Processor (3MB Cache, up to 3.1Ghz)? Windows 10 Home 64? 4GB DDR4-2133 SODIMM? Intel HD Graphics 620? 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3 Based on Lenovo parts upgrade page, it looks like I can go with either a 2.5'',7mm,SATA or a M.2,2280,PCIe3x4,SAM,OPAL Samsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM) https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-500GB-Internal-MZ-76E500B-AM/dp/B0781Z7Y3S/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qi... Would it make sense to keep my existing 500 gb 7200 hard drive and go with with the PCIE M.2 sata. That way I could copy the files over and just switch the boot order in the bios? Also, in terms of RAM would this be compatible with my setup? I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm getting a T470 with the base 500GB HDD, but have ordered a Samsung 960 EVO SSD from Amazon. I have now found out that the T470 does not take M2 2280 SSDs unless you get a PCie SSD from the site itself, as there is an adapter that allows that. Should I cancel/return the SSD, or is there any way to get this SSD to work(if I could buy the adapter myself)? Or should I use the M2 2242 slot? I'm very lost at the moment. I do not mind swapping out the 500GB Hard Drive, as that's what I initially hoped to do. M2 2242 SSDs seem to be much more pricey and do not offer enough performance or storage at that price. Is there any SATA to M2 2280 enclosure/adapter I could use?Or should I get a SATA SSD?Or should I get a M2 2242 SSD? I'd rather not due to price v performance/storageCould I move the WiFi adapter to the M2 2242 slot...and will I get a free M2 2280 slot? Please help.   Also, side question, would this 4GB RAM stick work on the T470? I know it'll be lessened to 2133MHz, but it'll work right?

Looking at installing a Samsung 850 pro ssd 500Gb as the main OS drive.  It looks as though I'm limited on space in the back! I'm thinking the 2Tb drive can go into an external caddy for data downloads. If I get a second 2.5" HDD (non SSD) as a data drive; firstly is there room for two 2.5" drives and second are there enough sata headers on the motherboard to plug two drives in? Thanks in advance to anyone with insight here

I would like to upgrade my hard drive to a SSD and also upgrade memory. I have a HP model 15-g010dx laptop/

A:Upgrade memory and hard drive to ssd

Roozell Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Both are certainly doable. Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for your laptop: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04886216 Memory and drive information are on page 2. As to memory, there is only one slot, and it will hold a memory stick up to 8GB. As to SSD, any 2.5" SSD should work without problems. The Easiest way to migrate to an SSD is to use one with the same capacity as your hard drive, connect the SSD to the laptop using a USB-to-Hard-Drive cable, and use a "cloning" app to migrate the contents of the HDD to the SSD. When this is done, all you have to do is then swap the SDD for the HDD in the laptop. My personal recommendation is to use a third party tool known as Macrium Reflect to do the cloning. What I recommend is the following:1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)2) Connect the new drive to the PC using a USB drive adapter3) Follow the instructions in this link: http://knowledgebase.macrium.com/display/KNOW/Cloning+a+disk4) Shutdown the PC when done5) Swap the drives and reboot the PC. You should boot from the new drive without any problems. Good Luck

Hey guys, I'm a bit stuck on this one, usually I don't even bother coming in for tech advice, coz I usually know xD

My current system stands at this:
Chassis : CoolerMaster Storm Scout
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-790XT-USB3
CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 620 @ 3.3Ghz
Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper N520
Memory: 2x 2GB Kingston/Transcend DDR3-800 (Yes I know :x)
Power Supply: CoolerMaster GX-650W
Graphics Card: MSI GTX 460 Cyclone

I feel that there's plenty of bottlenecking going on as I have another system running an I5 750 overclocked to 4.0ghz and and a 5850 there, and that machine pulls significantly higher FPS (I know that the 5850 is only a tad faster than the 460 GTX 768MB)

So, with that, I'm thinking on whether I should upgrade my CPU to a Phenom X4 965 BE and OC from there, or step my ram up first to a pair of 4gb DDR3-1600 HyperX.

Any other models/ brand recommendations will be fine. I'm getting highly irritated at the speed of my machine atm :x

A:AMD PC upgrade path (most likely only CPU & memory)

Hmm, can you be more specific in what you mean by significant improvement, the games you are playing and resolution?

An OC'd i5 750 @ 4.0GHz is better then an Athlon II X4 620 @ 3.3GHz so is the 5850 over the 460 GTX 768MB which is more inline depending on the game with a 5830. I don't really see anything unusual going on here. Of course I'd imagine an upgrade to a Phenom II X4 965 + OC with new RAM would give you a performance boost but I doubt it'll surpass your main system.

Side topic here, but I have the same HSF & case and am curious to what temps you are hitting under load with your Athlon II X4 OC'd.

Hello,I would like to upgrade the hard disk of my T470 with a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB. Following some topics on this forum, in my understanding is possible to install both a NVMe and a 2,5" SSD but, when I opened the laptop, I found only the connector for NVMe (the one in place for the 256 GB hard disk). Do I need a cable to install a 2,5 SSD? About the new hard disk, is possible by chance to save the recovery partition by Lenovo and transfer to the new SSD? Thank you very much in advance. I look forward to hearing from the community.Pier

I have never had this problem when using Crucial memory upgrades in the past and wanted to run this by all on the forum.Current memory installed on the T470  Lenovo 8GB DDR4 2400MHz SoDIMM Memory FRU 01AG710. Goal was to add another 8GB in the vacant memory slot. 1. Using Crucial website memory upgrade tool selected and purchased their recomendation, 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIUM 1.2V CL17 notebook memory.2. Installed the Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIUM 1.2V CL17.3. Power up the T470, can see there power getting to the T40 but only a blank screen, green dot lit on the power button. No Bios access or any orther functions other than to press the lit power on button to power off.4. Removed the Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIUM 1.2V CL175. System boots up normal. Any one else experienced this problem?

A:T470 Crucial Memory Upgrade Install now laptop will not boot

I've generally had good luck with Crucial too.

One thing: 1st boot with new memory installed takes a while.  Be sure you've given it several minutes to sort things.  After that boot will be normal.

Not saying that's what is going on - but it might be.

so there's that..(kudos to DELL)

I'm finally getting around to doing some way overdue upgrades including
maxing out my RAM to 1024MB (I have now 512+256) and

So, now having 40MB HD and free space at...

I'm looking for at least an 80+MB HD..depending on cost.
Other than Dell (sorry Dell, looking for best price deal),
where do you recommend I can go to find a "reliable" HD
at a decent cost savings (ala Crucial)?

Any help appreciated.
If you'd care to further enlighten me, I'll be looking for instructions

I am looking to pull the trigger on a T470 and have a question. It seems the best value is to buy it more bare bones and upgrade on my own. I'm slightly confused on upgrading the HD though. If I get it with the 500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5", SATA3, what can of hard drive can I replace it with? Does it have to be an SSD or can it be an OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe? Also, if I get it with 8 GB of memory, can I put another 16 GB into the other empty slot? Or does it have to be 8 GB as well to match?

Hi,

I have w7 pro 32 bit but need to take advantage of more memory so want to upgrade to ultimate 64 bit. I'm a student and have seen that I can get an upgrade to ultimate 64bit but it says that I cannot do this from w7 at all but can do it from vista business - as per below link

Windows 7 Ultimate: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition

Do you know this to be the case? I have a vista busines recovery disc but am unsure if this will actually install the vista os on my notebook (I have all data that I need backed up on a USB removable hdd so not bothered if it's a clean install). I really need to do this legitimately as the reason I need to upgrade is so that I can install and run virtual machines to do a microsoft course (quite ironic) and would get found out immediately if I didn't choose the correct way to do it.

Any advise would be great - Thanks in advance

You can only do a 64 bit In-Place Upgrade from 64 bit Vista. You will need to do a clean install.

Any 3.5" drive at 2T or under should work fine.  Upgrading the CPU would mean buying used - these CPUs went out of production not long after your system was current - and that was a decade ago.

OEM recommended HDD capacity is 1TB as offered here on the FRU list of the hardware manual (page 26 here).
Resellers like crucial would offer 2 TB so it would be best to check returns options just in case.

Hello, I bought a lightly used T470 with 256gb PCIe SSD and just received a "new" 512gb Samsung PM961 PCIe SSD pulled from a new laptop. I've downloaded the recovery media to USB drive and was planning on just doing a fresh install of everything after upgrading the SSD.This is my first time to replace SSD or hard drive so I'm sorry for these basic questions, but:1) If I'm planning on selling the 256gb SSD that is coming out what should I do to wipe it or prepare it for someone else?2) Is there anything I should do to the replacement 512gb SSD after installation to ensure it is clean either before or after re-installing windows?3) Is there anything else I should be aware of or that I should think about since I'm doing this for the first time? I also have a new internal battery (it did not originally have one) and a WWAN card that I'm going to install. Should I do these in stages (SSD and Windows install first, then internal battery, then WWAN card) to make sure all is working properly? Thanks very much

I rotated the the modules through all slots and finally realized that when I went beyond 2 GB it produced a reboot. During post it tests 3 GB and the BIOS displays 3 GB. I have 512MB of RAM on the video card. Any suggestions ?? I am running the latest BIOS and if I remove one GB the machine boots and runs great... ???? Ron

Hi, So I recently added an additional 8gb of RAM to my T470 as well as a 2.5 inch SAMSUNG EVO 860 500gb SSD.   I did the upgrade in stages, starting with the RAM.  After rebooting I didn't notice any issues and proceed to use the laptop without issue for 2 days.  I then cloned the original harddrive and transferred it to the SSD.  I installed it without issue, however, I noticed the fan run a lot more, whereas previously it hardly ever came on.  The air coming out of the  vent is warm, so it's clearly trying to cool down the system. Is this a common issue with 2.5 inch SSD installs? Should I have tried to repurpuse the aluminum foil cover on my old HD and put it on the new SSD? Thanks!

And from what I gathered, it wasn't possible, as the HD used 30 pins, and FHD touch uses 40 pins.It looks as if that person could only upgrade from HD to FHD..Question is: Can I upgrade from FHD to FHD Touch?Type: 20JNModel: S0GJ00Serial: PF0UH6WPAnyone able to give a solid yes/no answer if it is possible? Also perhaps where to acquire said FHD touch display? (And will it have impact on the 300-something warranty I have left? Best regards (and merry Christmas) Thomas

We are upgrading our Intel FW upgrade in T470 machine and facing the issue while rebooting the machine. While rebooting we are getting " (A7) Me FW Downgrade-Request MeSpiLock Failed" error on BIOS screen. But when we check the FW version in BIOS it is showing empty in that. Please suggest any resolution on this issue

Hello together !

For your information:

Did a memory upgrade today at 2 Toshiba Satellite Pro 2100 (1,9 GH, 256 MB DDR-RAM originally), both up to 1 GB, all fine and not problems.

Just wanted to end rumours about "only 512 MB all together" or even less.

If searching for it, remember to think of the specifications:

DDR-266 (PC2100)
DDR-SDRAM, SO-DIMM
200 PIN
CL 2.5

concerning RAM frequency, building form etc.

Greetings

L0nestar

P.S.: Don`t think a discussion is necessary, thread could therefore be closed...

According the notebook specification Satellite Pro has two memory slots and can be upgraded up to 1 GB. It is very useful to have your confirmation about RAM upgrade for this old but still good notebook model.

Have a nice day.

Hello, I switched out my display for an ips from a t450s. It works perfect until I install the Intel 620 graphics driver. The screen goes black as soon as the driver is installed. I can reboot and the screen will be on for a few seconds and then goes black again. As soon as i uninstall the driver it functions fine again. I tried a couple drivers from different sources with no change. I researched a bit and found that a new display cable may be needed when upgrading screens any way to confirm this or if my display is bad? Thanks!

i want to upgrade my hard drive from its existing 40 GB capacity to a new hard drive that is 80 GB capacity. The old one is the master drive, and nothing is in the slave. I basically just want to put all the data from the old hard drive to to the new one, so how would i go about doing that? i heard about installing the new one as the slave and then transferring the files from the old one to the new, and then removing both drives and putting the new one in the master slot. if this works, a detailed explanation of how to do this would be most helpful. thanx.

I have a Dell Dim 8300 the SATA hard drive was getting full 100gb. I installed a 500gb WD hard drive on the secondary SATA port. It formatted fine. I made it the D: drive. I used norton ghost to copy C: to D:. Now I want to make the 500GB C: and boot from it and the 100GB d: as extra space. I can't figure out how to make the swap using SATA drives since there is no master slave jumper. I looked it the bios setup but it looks like the drives are assigned in windows. I was told swapping the SATA cables primary and secondary would not work. Any suggestions??

Thanks for the help.

I have recently obtained an old home made PC.I don't know the motherboard details, but it has an Intel Pentium[r]MMX[TM] processor. The processor is socket 7,it also has a 2.11 GB hard-drive.This brings me to my query, what is the largest hard-drive that would run on this system? The processor speed is:125 megahertz,PCI Bus Master IDE Control:Intel 82371AB/EB.I intend to upgrade the memory which at present is 48MB,but if I can up the hard-drive that would give me more scope. Also is there another processor that would give better speed that is also socket 7? Any help would be gratefully received.
