"Windows 10 installation has failed" on virtual machine

Q: "Windows 10 installation has failed" on virtual machine

I've spent hours trying to do a repair install of Windows 10 on a VM Ware Fusion 8.5 virtual machine. The host machine is a mid-2010 iMac. The virtual machine is running Windows 10 Home x64 1607. The reason I'm doing a repair install is because some system files are corrupted and "sfc /scannow" only gets about halfway before it says it couldn't load some resources then quits.

The "Windows 10 installation has failed" message appears not long after starting the installation when it says about 6%.

I've attached a screenshot of the failure message as well as disk manager and the Panther folder which is curiously unpopulated (there's nothing in the two folders shown above). The Panther folder doesn't contain any error logs. However, on a previous installation attempt, I looked at an error log and it showed that it was not able to copy something from the installation disc to a location on C:/windows.

I have installed Windows 10 without problem on a number of other machines, but I'm stuck here on this one. By the way, no external drives or devices are attached to the machine (other than the apple bluetooth trackpad and keyboard which have never been a problem on this and other virtual machines). I've run chkdsk on the virtual machine and the drive appears to be ok. I've tried doing this repair install from the DVD drive as well as by copying the .iso image to the desktop and mounting it in file explorer. The result is the same.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 8 throws an error involving winload.exe when it can not boot for any reason.

Sounds to me like you might have to setup VirtualBox better or whatever software you're using. I don't use virtualization, so I can't be more specific.

In your motherboard bios settings, make sure Virtualization is on, or similar. (VT or HAV)

Hi,
I newly installed Windows 8.1 (not an upgrade, fresh install from corporate network) on a Dell Precision T7600 workstation and enabled the Hyper-V feature with the matching management. I created a couple of 2 GB RAM, 2 virtual CPUs VMs and am trying to install
Windows Server 2k8R2 and 2k12 on them. After a network boot, during the first couple dialog boxes for Windows setup, I am unable to use the keyboard. When I try to boot from an ISO, the VM get stuck on a black screen "Starting Windows". In either
case if I use the VM connection window menu to paste from clipboard or send ctrl+alt+del, I get the error:
Virtual Machine Connection
Could not send keys to the virtual machine.
Interacting with the virtual machine's keyboard device failed.

I search online for this error and did not find others experiencing it.
I tried to shutdown and reset both VMs, I stopped and restarted the Hyper-V service. Neither helped. I am not sure what other step I can take at this point.
Also, I configured a virtual switch as external network on one of the two Intel network adapters. Both connect to a gigabit switch. "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is checked. Both VMs are on the same virtual switch.

Hi together,
I have a virtual Windows 8 machine that had houndres of updates to install.
After finishing the updates and rebooting the system the machine stops (or takes very long time?) with "updating your system" 11% (for more than 12 hours).
For sure there is important data on the machine ;-).
I read about a problem with an old update (november)...
Any idea how to figure out if the machine is "only" very slow or how to proceed?

My XP installation in my Windows XP emulator in Windows 7 is screwed up and my oldest backup of the emulator's image was done when the damage was already done (I just hadn't noticed yet).

So now my only option is to "format" the emulator and get a clean install of XP on it. How do I do that?

Thanks

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks
John

I've installed Hyper-V on a Windows 8 Enterprise PC and can't seem to assign any virtual disks created on my second disk (D: drive) to a virtual machine.
I have created the virtual machine (XML stored on C: drive) in the Hyper-V Manager console without a disk assigned to it. I then successfully created a virtual disk in the Hyper-V Manager console. However, when I try and assign the disk to the virtual machine,
it gives me the following error when I press OK:
Error applying Hard Drive changes
Failed to add device 'Virtual Hard Disk'
Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service Account does not have permission to open attachment. Error: 'General access denied error' (0x80070005)
I have checked the permissions on the virtual disk and the virtual machine ID account has been assigned Read/Write permissions (I have tried adding full control permissions but this does not resolve the error). The D: drive has been formatted in Windows
8 and if I create a virtual disk on the C: drive then it works fine. As far as I can tell, I can't see any obvious differences between the C: and D: drives in terms of configuration or permissions. I have BitLocker installed on both of them.
Hyper-V has been installed with the default settings - no configuration or service account changes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - Thanks.Phil Childs http://get-spscripts.com

Since I purchased the Win 8 Pro Upgrade online from Microsoft on Jan 20th, Ive been trying to get in to install. I have Windows 7 Ultimate on a HP laptop. I've had the Microsoft "live help agents" or whoever remotely access/control my pc 3 times already. I knew as much or more than 2 of them did, after several hours with each of them ultimately coming up with no solution and/or me having to end the remote session to go to work or to bed. The third agent was sincere in wanting to get this fixed for me, and she was much more knowledgeable about the everything involved. But once again, after almost 2 hours with her, we didn't get anything fixed and I had to go to work.
I'm almost ready to give up and get Microsoft to put the money back on my Visa...but I still have (some) hope! And after 20 yrs with Windows/Microsoft, this is my first bad experience. And it is BAD. But I really want Windows 8, and this site is the first one I've run across that gave me hope again!

I've tried hosting a server for an indie computer game called Minecraft using the following .jar file
http://minecraft.net/download/minecr...=1284392596463
and while it works, I've been unable to allocate more than 1 gig of memory to the program.

Running the .jar file by itself leaves a very small amount of memory, which is tracked on the server window as "Memory use: # mb (% free)

The support forum for the game suggests using a .bat file with the following line:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar

This does increase the amount of memory, and while I should be able to increase the "1024" values to use even more, this is where I run into problems. Using "2048" or any other value in this .bat line produces an error stating:
"Unable to run virtual Java machine"

I've asked about this on the game's forum, and the only response I've gotten was from other Vista 64 bit users that have the same problem and are unable to solve it. Any thoughts?

Hi guys, I ask you a lot of help because I'm in trouble up to my neck. I try to be as detailed as possible.
I have a Packard Bell with initially installed Windows Vista Home Premium (I don't know if 32-bit or 64-bit). Over time I updated it to later versions, and in fact before the problem I normally had Windows 10.

Brief introduction: as you know, telematic lessons have started in the world at home. So I installed Microsoft Teams and so far everything is ok. I noticed, however, immediately that the fan of my old PC with more than 10 years of intense work was starting to fuel quickly. While I was thinking about how to solve, the inevitable happened: during a lesson the PC freeze in the screens, and after waiting 5-10 minutes I turned it off by the button. By re-accessing it, this screen appeared, as the title says:

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your computer."

If you do not have the disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

I have a need to have like a virtual machine... not what you get when you see discussions about "Virtual Machine" software and functionality... but rather, When User X or Guest Logs In He goes to a seperate Partition or whatever... Just so the user sees none of the full administrators stuff, recent files, the auto fill stuff that comes up in like music, or images, or word docs etc... he will only see and have applications see what has happened on his area or partition... I am not opposed to having full duplicated OS and Programs on that partition if that is necessary... but when X logs in, he sees nothing but stuff on his partitions... Like I was looking for graphics for letterhead and invoicing for customer X with Customer X with me and some graphics for Customer Y popped up and Customer X should never have seen those ... Confidentiality... so when I was looking searching for the graphics ... the fill in complete whatever,,, feature popped up a filename that was obviously recognizable for Customer Y! That cannot Happen... I need to totally Segregate this stuff... Help. Under NT4 this was kinda easy but I have spent 9 hours scouring printed manuals and online sources and get everything but the simple things Ineed... Hey they do that at the public library even... Please Help.

Creating limited user accounts and encrypting the data that each user creates is probably only way to do it without installing multiple versions of the operating system. Each user should only see the files they've created.

I'm trying to run Client Hyper-V on my Windows 8 Pro machine. I was able to successfully install the service, and can create virtual machines and hard disks on my local system. I can even start them, and see boot activity via the preview window in the MMC.
I cannot, however, connect to any machines from the local system: when I do, it hangs on "Connecting to <machinename>" for 30 seconds before it pops up with the dialog:
"Cannot connect to virtual machine. Try to connect again. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator."
Obviously, because this is Client Hyper-V, I am the system administrator, so I scour the Internet to solve my problem. I see solutions related to firewalls, administrative permissions, a few other things, and nothing has worked. I also tried creating
a virtual machine on a Windows 8 Enterprise system (which can connect to it just fine) and export it for the Pro machine to import, and I still cannot connect to it, whether the VM is registered in place or copied to the host.
Some other notes:
- None of these systems has an OS installed - two locally created ones either had no boot or booted off a Linux LiveCD, and the exported one attempted to do a PXE boot. Thus, I cannot attempt to link via Remote Desktop since the computers have no names
- Hyper-V has some other quirks on my system as well: in order to stop a virtual machine, I have to end the vmwp process - which restarts the machine - and then stop it fr... Read more

Hi there.

Two things to try, in this order:

1) Disable the 3rd party firewall if you have one. Usually uninstall is necessary to test but not for this. Reboot.

2) If issue still repeats, download and install Malwarebytes. Run it then update definitions within it. Let it scan and remove anything it finds.

Let us know how it goes. There are lots of great folks here. Someone is liable to come up with a solution for you.

I'm posting this in the Vista forum because this has never happened with Windows 2000 or XP.

I bought two exact duplicate models of hard disks. I set up Vista Ultimate on one of my systems. I used Acronis True Image 10 to clone the operating disk to the factory-new, never-used, same model disk as a backup drive in the event the first disk failed. I put in the clone to be sure it runs; but, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

Now, if the second disk is supposed to be a clone of the first, why does this happen and how can I fix it?

I'm not married to Acronis for this job so I would use any disk cloning tool that makes a sector-for-sector copy. I use Norton Ghost 2003 for making sector-for-sector raw image (forensic) copies of PATA drives; but, these are SATA drives and Ghost 2003 simply sits there like Tarbaby and he don't say nuttin' to no SATA drive.

Hello,
First let me tell you about my system.   This is an Inspiron

It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi,

what to do in this case ""Windows-virtual memory low""

pl advise
Bhaumik

A:""Windows-virtual memory low""

Double the values at least until you get more ram

Run sysdm.cpl and go to the location in my screenshot.

Be sure to click the "set" tab after making the change.

The default is typically 1 1/2 times installed ram. But if you have a lot of ram, this rule of thumb may not apply.

You may also benefit by running msconfig and selecting the startup tab.

There you can disable many programs from starting that are not always needed -- such as media player startups. Choices are easily reverseable.

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get the REST queries to work with the sharepoint end points instead of graph end points. I first created an app with relevant permissions and have given it the admin consent. Then I am hitting the https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant>.onmicrosoft.com/oauth2/token?Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded end
point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.
Thanks,

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

BUT no problems on my laptap which has the Viewer installed from the

Have had a few problems with computer of late - it was in the workshop

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

I have two issues, which I think are related. In the Device Manager, it shows under USB Controllers "Unknown device". "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

I tried updating the driver, but the driver was correct.

I tried disabling the device.

I uninstalled the device. Windows reinstalled it at next boot, but the problem reappeared.

There is no Imaging Devices in the Device Manager.

At the same time, my webcam failed to open. Message "Webcamera initialization failed."

I downloaded the correct webcam program from Toshiba, installed it, but same result.

This all started when I uninstalled and reinstalled Skype. I have tried uninstalling it again, but still no webcam.

The webcam is enabled in the BIOS.

I really do not want to reinstall Windows.

All help appreciated.

Hello!
Sorry for refresh this old question, but...
Finally i've got solution in my situation! =)
I have Windows 2008 Server R2 SP1.
When i tried to install IE10, i've got this error in CBS.log:
Failed to find file: amd64_microsoft-windows-scripting-vbscript_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.21238_none_a51187a7608a895d\vbscript.dll
Steps to correct this error:
1. Download this: "Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Edition (KB2706045)"
2. Don't try to install, it wouldn't =)
3. Extract all files:
AMD64-all-windows6.1-kb2706045-x64_ffc82084794531c27bd4a670408d2c4a4d038ad8.msu /extract:.
4. Run this:
dism.exe /online /add-package /packagepath:Windows6.1-KB2706045-x64.cab
5. Now you can try to install IE10.

P.S. I think with IE11 problem will be solve in this way too . =)

After Windows 8.1 x64 Professional is running for a while, when I go into disk management I get:
"unable to connect with virtual disk service"
Upon reboot it starts working again. I have done an sfc /scannow and it comes up with no errors.
Any suggestions?
This is more than a minor annoyance, when I connect a USB drive it's doesn't map a letter to it and I have to go into disk management to do so. Rebooting each time is costing lost productivity.

Hi,

I think I have a virus or something in my laptop. It seems a lot of people who had a similar problem got some good advice from in this website, so maybe you help me as well.

I'm getting the same warning message every time I turn on my laptop. It says "Windows - Virtual Memory Minium Too Low". It started out of the blue about a month ago. It can't be anything to do with low memory, because it appears even before I do anything on the machine. My Avira (ver 12) doesn't seem to work anymore, every time I do a scan, it finds more viruses, and my laptop would not let me to go the website anymore. I also noticed that the hard drive is continuously running, even when Im not accessing any programs or have any web pages opened. The times I do use the web, it often freezes up, and I have to close all the pages just to unfreeze it. I tried System Restore, but I cant even get to any of my old save points anymore.

I am running on XP and IE8. I have a log for anyone who needs it. Thanks again.

Windows is lying through its teeth.

Is there a service I need to start ?

There is a very brief pop-up with the title bar "Querying Shrink Space", which then launches
The error pop-up with the title bar "VIRTUAL DISK MANAGER" and the message
"The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it"

Is the source of the problem :-
an error in the object "Querying Shrink Space" ?
or the absence or failure in an object called "Shrink Volume Wizard"

I can choose to EXTEND a partition and an "Extend Volume Wizard" pops-up and will implement my wishes.
I guessed there might by a "Shrink Volume Wizard" and Google found many instances.

Under Services I find that "Virtual Disk" is
Startup Type "Manual Startup", and
Status "Started"

I am using 64 bit Windows 7 Ultimate + SP1 with 8 GB RAM.

I have a primary OCZ 56 GB SSD and a Secondary Samsung 931,5 GB HDD holding 3 Primary partitions followed by 5 Secondary partitions.

I also have a 600 GB HDD which is OFFLINE to protect its RAW DATA from accidental damage - I am testing data recovery tools in my spare time.

I cannot shrink ANY partition on either Drive.

Hello all!
for 3 days now iv been trying to install w7 32bit.
i have read a lot of messages here about fixing my problem and non of them was a success.
When installing w7, after the first reset, the installation returns to the screen where it shows the progress of the installation.
the only thing left is "completing installation". it hangs on that screen for hours and wouldnt contoniue. i can move my mouse but it dosent give much help.
things i tried untill now:
1, disconnecting all drives beside the one i want to install w7 on it.
2. disconnecting a pci card of USB2 slots.
3. disable all usb controls from bios (my mouse and keyboard are connected with "blue" and "purple" connections)
4. disable floppy ( which does not exist)- which didnt solve the problem but made the installation much faster)
5. Change in the bios from PCI to PEG
Additional Notes: I have only one monitor which is a LCD TV which connected to the nvidia graphic card with DVI to HD cable. in the installation it shows that i have 3 partitions in this hardisk and i have only 2 as far as i know. the third one has a 8MB capacity, mybe its related some how...
I have seen that people gave suggestions about a utility which fixes the hardrive and maybe solve the problem, but i have no operating system to do so.
I dont know much about my computer and i dont have any operating system to check it. i only know that i have intel core 1.8 ghz, 2gb ram, some gigabyte motherboard,... Read more

A:Windows 7 32bit installation freezes at "completing installation" (AGA

Is it the stage where it freezes ?
Which process of installation are you trying ? Are you upgrading your XP installation with windows 7 ; or you installing 7 with formatting the C drive ? Sometimes upgrading takes enormous time to be completed compared with clean install .

You follow this tutorial : Clean Install Windows 7 ... follow steps 6, 7 and 8 carefully , I hope there would not be a further problem . All the best

I've tried frequently documented solution regarding FsDepends where
changing the start reg key from a value of 3 to 0.... doesn't work as this is a common symptom to a different problem.

When using partdisk or the disk management gui I get the error message: "A virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found"
eg partdisk select vdisk file=c:\my.vdh
There are some statements that some Intel Management Control Software might be knobbing this feature... does anybody know what this installation is doing so that the process can be reversed?
Any other suggestions?

Hi Everyone,

Here I am going to descibe how to change Windows XP from using "IDE" to "AHCI" mode post OS installation.

If your looking to install an SSD into a Windows XP computer you will likely find these instructions invaluable. Most XP computers (due to their vintage) are running in "IDE" mode,
and it turns out that SSDs perform best when running in "AHCI" mode!

The root of what follows comes from these instructions (so credit to those who deserve it!).

Also thanks go out to Alexoiu who pointed me in the right direction here...

INSTRUCTIONS

1). Download the appropriate SATA driver from your motherboard manufacturers site (the file is typically quite small, mine was under 2Mb)
2). Extract the file to your hard drive
3). Locate the ahcix86.sys file (you may need to uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" in order to see the correct file)
4). Copy ahcix86.sys
5). Paste ahcix86.sys into ..\System32\Drivers (typcially C:\Windows\System32\Drivers)
6). Download Add AHCI to XP (Post Installation).reg to a convenient location
7). Double click on the Registry file to install it
8). Click on "Yes" when the screen below is presented -

9). Click on "OK" when the screen below is presented -

10). Shutdown
