Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

Q: Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add. Why would this be? I am the administrator?

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Today I was trying to view some astronomy mpegs (supernova explosion animations) with my Windows Media Player (version 6). When I'd click on the link to play the mpeg, a d/l window popped up (first time thats happened) and once the d/l was complete, another window would pop up saying, "Access to specified device, path or file is denied". In all the years I've had this computer, that has never happened before when I wanted to view mpegs. This has just started happening out of the blue and I don't know why. I did check properties for WMP and made sure that under the secruity tab full access was being given to me as the administrator. My computer is a home PC and not on a network. Some help would be greatly apprecaited.
Thanks
Greg

A:Windows Media Player gets "Access to specified device, path or file is denied"

It may be something to do with the link/site rather than your player. Version 6 is also a bit more limited than later ones.
Can you post the link to see if someone else can view these animations?

I run into this problem often. When working with Photoshop files (PSD in the most recent case), sometimes when I make a change and then try to save the changes I come up with this error dialog. My work flow is always the same - I am the computer's administrator.
I am the only person with access to this computer. There are no other users on this computer. This computer is not tied to any server or network. My files are generated from my own work obtained from my camera. I normally save changes to the file several times
so I won't lose my work. I can save the file using a different name, but then I cannot delete the original file unless I reboot the computer and open it up again. Please explain why this randomly reoccurs.

A:File Access Denied - You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file

Hi dmiddleton123,
"When working with Photoshop files (PSD in the most recent case), sometimes when I make a change and then try to save the changes I come up with this error dialog. "
When did the issue start to occur ?The issue only occur with the specific software ?Have you tried to change another location to saved file or reopen the software (end the software process from the task manager)to have a check ?
This issue is a little weired, please take the following steps to have a check .
1.Run "sfc /scannow" to check the health of the system files .
2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software .
3.Perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here.

4.Create a new administrator and login with it to have a check. There is a possibility that the present account profile has corrupted.

If the issue only occurred with the specific software ,it is also recommended to ask for help from the software developer .

A:window media player cannot syncronize the file the player might not support the file

The newer Windows Media Players have different licensing policies and I encountered loads of problems with files that were already on my computer when I upgraded to WMP9/10. Restore your computer to before you installed Media Player 9/10 and this will allow you to transfer again. There are plenty of better players than WMP; ITunes 7 with it's "cover-flow" feature is awesome and it can be configured to up/download to any MP3 player as well. It uses the Quicktime player instead of WMP though.

I had to restart a computer on our office network which uses Windows XP on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Now I cannot access a file on a computer which uses Windows 8 unless I tell the Windows 8 computer to let EVERYONE access the file - which I don't want to do. A computer using Windows Vista on the same network has had no problems. I've created a new username on the Windows 8 computer and given the problem computer that name but still no access. I've enabled read/write file sharing and given the problem computer full access permissions but still can't get in. I removed all Microsoft updates that had been installed four days before the problem occurred on the Windows 8 computer and recovered the Windows XP system to the day before the problem occurred - still can't get in. Any ideas out there?

A:Restarted XP Computer, Now Cannot Access File on Windows 8

That would be correct. Or you would need to go into Advanced Sharing options on the Windows 8 machine and downgrade the security setting from 128 to 48/56. I always create a local user account on Windows 8 machines, if I am going to be sharing stuff across the network.

Otherwise it all goes on the NAS for our network, or a Own Cloud server that my brother hosts for the family. Then I never have to worry about networked computer share issues.

Somehow the UAC settings in my computer (running windows 8.1) have become corrupted so that whenever I try to access the settings or click on an exe. file, I get a User Account Control pop up that says " To continue type an administrator
password, then click "Yes". There is no space for the password, and "Yes" is grayed out; so the only option is "No" to get rid of the pop up. I have tried the various solutions listed on the web for UAC setting changes etc. --
all are blocked, and at some point I get the pop up again (usually whenever I click on an option that has the security shield icon). Any fixes for this? I have been told that the only option is to run a recovery on the computer. Even getting remote help is
out because this also requires UAC permission.

Hello world. I have an important problem. I can't open, use or even preview files that the name of those files are colored in green. (like this)First, I would serve a chronology:- Before I reformatted my computer to windows Vista Starter SP1, I am using Windows XP Pro SP3.- Back when my Operating System is Windows XP Pro SP3, my hard drive is partitioned into two (C:/ and D:/).- I put some files (pictures, documents, apps) on one of the drives (D:/).- I tweaked the folder of the files' properties(security tab) and applied some changes in its security/sharing etc. It made a process like "applying the setting" which after that, - The name of the files and folders/subfolders turned into green!(like this)- I did this because there are multiple users on my computer(cousins) and I don't want them to mess up with my files.- I didn't see anything wrong in doing that I supposed, so I just left those files to stay that way (like this) ---- this part is the problem part ----- I finally decided to upgrade to Windows Vista Starter SP1 operating system. I installed it in the C:/ partition of my hard drive.- The files in the other partition (D:/) stayed there untouched.- I tried to insert a picture in a document, that "picture" would be a file that I am talking about a while ago, the file in drive (D:/) which its name is like this- Unfortunately, it said something like: "WORD CAN'T OPEN FILE: FILE PERMISSIONS NOT ALLOWED"- I was astonished! Whenever I try to open a PDF file, I get the message that there is a problem with my Adobe Acrobat Reader. After clicking OK, I keep getting this message:

Windows cannot access the specific device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

which is under the heading of:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alfio\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5JII7HDM?

The letters & numbers at the end (after "Content.IE5\" are not always the same.

I've installed and uninstalled the newest version of Acrobat, but still get the same result.

Someone suggested using a different program instead of Adobe's, which I will probably do, but I'm more concerned with the idea that the problem is related to my registry.

I also cannot download the Adobe Flash Player, so maybe it is just an issue with Adobe programs on my computer, but this only started happening after I had to get rid of some viruses on my computer. Everything else seems to be fine, with no more virus problems, but I don't know how to go about dealing with this permission issue.

Thank you.

Single forest 2 domain environment
Shortly have recent changes (stated above) the issue started with 5 users in parent domain.  After existing user logs in applications like  windows explorer, internet explore, will error with  "windows cannot access the specified
device, path or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item".  Also, other applications will not run as they are attempting to resister OCX file and DLLs.  cannot access computer management even after granting affected
user local admin rights.  This issue has now transcended to child domain and is affecting at the moment only 1 existing user.
Unaffected users are able to login to same test computer and run applications without issue.
Clearly a domain permission problem with the user account, but not sure how to proceed.
For testing I gave affected users domain admin rights and the issue goes away.  Remove domain admin rights and the issue returns for the user.

Hi,Ok, for the past few days my system has been giving me grief. I made the mistake of clicking on a file uploaded to RapidShare and after downloading it, the file disappeared in the blink of an eye (I kid you not). So I downloaded it again and clicked on the file through the download manager and it disappeared again. Weird. I am fairly certain there is a virus(trojan) lurking about, especially because I am re-directed to websites other than the ones I click on; my System Information is empty; and random sites pop-up when I am on the internet.

Right now, I have accessed the internet by using iexplore.exe on my flash drive.

Thanks!

Hi Experts

I cannot access the internet using the menu. The above message appears when I try. I am able to get online by putting iexplore.exe on my desktop.

I have tried to follow the instructions on the preparation guide. Unfortunately, no logs appear with either the DDS or RootRepeal. I cannot deleted the RootRepeal file: "Access is Denied"

The only information I have is from the following 2 log files:

Hi All,

I've got a problem creating long named folders or files on a Linux network share.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:
The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? < > |

Also, I can not see files on the share that have long names...

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Help?

Whenever i take a file and put it onto the my desktop, all the permissions to the file is completely stripped. Leaving none able to open the file.

I backed up my outlook pst file last night to do a clean install. Now that it is all up and running, I cannot import the backup.pst. It tells me that access to the file is denied. Any advice on how to get around this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

A:Cannot import pst file in outlook, it says file access is denied???

Hi musiclover

Copy the .pst file to the hard drive, check the properties of the .pst file and verify it is *not* marked Read-only.

Open instead of Import the .pst file.
In Outlook...version?
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the location of the .pst file.

Hello,

I am attempting to access an application.exe file on my desktop. Each time that I click on it the Windows message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." pops up. I am the system administrator so this should NOT be a problem but apparently many out there are dealing with this as well. I can delete, move and even copy the file but I cannot run it. There is no option for override with password or grant permission. It just says that I cannot run it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, the system I am running is Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

A:Windows can't access file. May not have permission to access.

Hello KyRy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might check to see if you can right click on the file, click on Properties, click on Security tab, and make sure that you have Read & execute permission allowed (checked) for your user account or the administrators group.Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups
If not, then you might see if you may be able to install and use the free program Unlocker on the file to have access to it afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,
I captured an AVI file from my DVD player using my video card. My Real Player and Windows Media Player won't place this DVD clip. Someone said I need codecs.
1. what are they?
2. where to get them?
3. how to use that to convert the file to some other format?
4. what formats do Real Player and Windows Media Player support?
4a. Is there another downloadable DVD player that will play the AVI file as is?
5. I also tried to burn this AVI file using Nero but when I tried to drag the file to the proper place, I encountered problems. What could be the issue here?
6. I have been told in another forum that my CD burner can burn a DVD file on DVD media if the format is proper. What format is needed? Is this another codec issue? (Nero says it needs AVI and that is what my file is).
Thanks

I need the Realtek DASH Client Service for Windows 10 64-bit. It is supposed to be at the link: https://support.lenovo.com/hr/en/downloads/ds504102 The readme refers to the correct file. However, Realtek DASH Client Service does not exist in the archive itself. It seems the wrong file was linked to the page. Can someone at Lenovo update the download link with the correct files? Or, does someone else know where I might find the correct files?

I do have it backed up there, can I safely delete it off my laptop and access it from the hard drive? Also, how do I make sure any songs I rip or download get put on the external hard drive? Is there a path setting?

Hi Guys and Gals

I,ve been trying for a couple of years now without success to burn a cd or back up my photos. The error message reads, windows media player cannot find the file, the link from the item in the library to it's associated digital media file might be broken. To fix the problem, try repairing the link or remove the item from the library. Error message number, C00D10BA. I've removed the driver (ASUS CRW 4824AH) and re installed it, done several system re stores, I have also followed the message To Repair a Link but cannot find the items in question. I've got Windows Media Player 11, Service Pack 2, Windows XP Home edition. Any suggestions.

Thanks BOB

A:Windows media player cannot find the file.

yes, do not use windows media played to back up anything like that, media player is geared more towards burning music not pics and vids,. make sure you can still view your pics and vids, if so just download a free backup program form somewhere like download.com and it should be much simpler for you. just find the files, add them to the list to be burned and burn them. note: this is for backup purposes only you will not be able to view them on any source other than a computer.

Hi my name is Mario. I use Windows XP and I have been using WMP 10 for months without any problems. However in the past 2 weeks I can't make any file play. Evertime I try to play a file I get:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
(More information shows thats a C00D1199: Cannot play the file)
I have done everthing to correct the problem myself...
WITHIN WMP 10
All the file types to play are checked (asf, wmv, avi, wav, mpeg....etc)
Player Settings
Is set to download codecs automatically (it doesnt download the codecs)
Is set Connect to the Internet (overrides other commands)
INTERNET PROPERTIES
Internet Security Level for this zone is set to medium (default)
I RE-INSTALLED WMP 10
I RE-INSTALLED the video & audio drives.
I even tried to use system restore to a previous month and nothing!!!!
Im going crazy !!!!

I already checked for viruses and for system errors using Norton Antivirus and Norton Disk Doctor

WMP ONLY PLAYS "Windows Media Audio/Video file" type and the rest of the files have been designated as "Movie Clip" type.
Because WMP is not working I can only see videos with InterVideoWinDVD (but I miss WMP)

I hope someone out there will have a new idea that I haven't tried yet.
I will really appreaciate any kind of help

Sincerely
Mario.

I think this is a good challenge to anyone!!!

I am on a network at work and have enable media sharing with my co-workers. I can play their music but i cant save it to my computer or burn it? How do i do this>?

A:Windows Media Player 10 File sharing

The point of Windows Media Sharing is not to be some sort of P2P application, but rather like a radio station that you can tune into specific tracks. If you don't already own the music you're trying to burn then it's really not a legal practice you're getting into.

Hello

I'm having a problem with Media Player 10 that's driving me nuts.

Like all good computer users (?) I installed XP Service Pack 2 (Home Edition) and Windows Media Player 10 got badly hit. When I tried to open any media file (audio/video) I got an error screen telling me the file had no association. It told me to go to Folder Options to create a file association. But be it mpeg, avi or whatever, it was actually correctly associated.

I uninstalled the XP2 Service Pack because I thought that had created the problem. Unfortunately, the problem remained.

I tried to over install but that didn't cure it. I also tried uninstalling ( which was actually a rollback to Media Player 9). By this time I was crawling up the walls because the problem persisted. I was now very so I tried to delete MP10 completely, thinking I would re-install a version from Microsoft.

But (please wait while I scream.......................................................) I couldn't delete it because MP10 was being used by another programme.

Can anyone help before I bust my head on the wall????? You'll save me a lot of physical pain.

Best Wishes To All

John

In the past I have created numerous m3u files to play an mp3 file on Windows Media Player and they all have worked well. Today, however, I created one just the same way and when I play it I get the message:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

When I check the help file for the file types that are supported I find that it does support m3u and mp3 files.

Does anyone have any help for me to know how to fix this?
