Computer freezing

Q: Computer freezing

I have a Gateway DX420B, Windows XP. I use Mozilla Firefox. The computer has started freezing when I click on any drop-down box. It lasts until I close the browser and restart it. I do have a Windows xp operating system disc.

RELEVANCY SCORE 200
Preferred Solution: Computer freezing

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Computer freezing

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I recently built my first PC three days ago...
Specs:
i7 bloomfield 960 processor
4x4 vengeance ram
crosair hx850 PSU
evga x58 ftw3 mobo
hd 6870 radeon graphics xfx

When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both... (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.

any advice would be appreciated if not I will bring to a repair shop and have them sort it out.

Hello Skytri and welcome to Seven Forums. My usual disclaimer: I'm not at expert at anything.

I'm wondering if there isn't a RAM problem. Perhaps one of the sticks wasn't seated properly, etc. You could open Resource Monitor > Memory tab and make sure all RAM is being recognized. Make sure Installed = 16384MB and the Available + Cached + Hardware Reserved is the same amount. (You are using 16GB total, correct?)

Resource Monitor

If Memtest freezes you could try a quick check for a bad RAM module. Install one stick in Slot # 1 (or whichever slot the mobo manual says to use.) Run the computer to test for freezes. Test each of the remaining sticks one at a time. If all 4 sticks work you might want to go through these troubleshooting guides. They are time consuming but many people have been able to isolate their computer problems.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

A:Random Computer Freezing - Need to hard restart after freezing No BSOD

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

Hello, I'm having an issue with my computer.

My computer has started to restart/freeze up on me. The thing is, it has graphical issues once it freezes/tries to reboot. I get all these lines through the screen, graphical glitches when trying to go through the BIOS, etc. The computer isn't too slow, it isn't acting strange, the only thing that is wrong is the obvious freezing/restarting with graphical lines and glitches once it freezes.

My video card has been going out for a long time(I share a computer with a few people and they seem to think the video card is ok, but I have always seen small glitches in graphics here and there), so I am thinking maybe this might be a problem, given the graphical glitches, the horizontal lines going through the screen once it freezes.

When it hits the BIOS, it sometimes shows these same lines with the screen going mostly black.

System specs are:

CPU - Core 2 Duo, speed I don't remember.

Video Card - Geforce 7900 GT 512mb

Ram - 2GB DDR2

Motherboard - Asus, P5N-E SLI

I got this computer a few years back and I am not one to keep updated with specs or talk about them often, so I have forgotten the speed of the CPU and I do not know if I am missing information for you guys.

Solutions I have tried:

Overheating - I used air to filter out all dust/dirt that might be there to harm the computer, I have plenty of fans in there, etc.

Any and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:Solved: Computer Freezing/freezing/graphical glitchs

If you're getting graphical 'glitches' while in bios, that's usually a good sign that your graphics card is having issues - however, I have seen this happen with faulty ram. I'd recommend reseating the cards (ensure your computer is off and unplugged whilst doing so) and see if that helps

A:Computer Freezing; Slowing Down. But mostly freezing. I have my HiJackThis! Log File.

I don't see anything in your log or your description of your problem to come to the conclusion that your problem is malware related. When there is malware present there will always be other internet related symptoms like popups or a browser hijack etc...

I will advise you to uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware as the version you have is very old and no longer supported. It in now called Windows Defender.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Go through this now and see if it helps:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

I don't know what else to say other than my computer has been freezing and firefox has been freezing lately. I called the manufacturer and he said to restore windows to factory settings, so I did that. Things were great for a week or so, but recently my computer has begun freezing again. It happens pretty frequently. Firefox will also freeze when trying to get it to do very little work, like loading two tabs simultaneously, e.g. My AVS found a suspicious file recently and quarantined it, but still, the freezing has continued. Please advise.

And I do not think that I have a Boot CD

Had the day from hell with my computer, antivirus stopped working and my computer got infected. On safe mode with networking, I ran malwarebyte a couple times, cleaned most all of it out. When rebooting to windows, computer became super slow, like 5 minutes to open a window, etc. I had to force reboot a few times. But then I started getting a screen that demanded a reboot disk. Only one I have is. a windows vista disc. I had windows 7. It won't let me even get that blue startup screen where I can push f keys.
Can anyone give me some advice, or do I need to just get a new hard drive.

The problem isn't the hard drive, it's that you are still infected.

The computer when running slowly makes a ton of noise starting up and running and tends to use more processing. The computer sometimes makes weird noises that aren't normal windows sounds and come from error's. Like intense beeping noises ocassionally. Firefox especially is insanely slow and the longer I run it the more processing power it uses up along with the plugins.exe. Sometimes it will uses so much that it completely freezes my computer. Lately I've also been having trouble starting the computer where it won't even load windows.

I've ran Ccleaner daily and Malwarebytes weekly and find nothing and the problem has been getting progressively worse. I have Avast which updates daily.

Recently(about 2 weeks ago), my computer started freezing. It happened 5 times already(one of them occurred as I was typing this post). I wasn't doing anything in particular, just using Firefox to browser the web.

3 of the freezings occurred while I was just browsing, 2 occurred while my computer was starting up. No sites in general either, out of the 3 times I froze, I was on different sites each time(all of them are "known safe ones" too like ign.com, wikipedia, etc).

After the latest freeze(during browsing), I restarted my computer only for my computer to freeze again after 3 seconds(screen stayed the same, it happened right after it showed me my memory test). Then I restarted my computer again and it froze before anything showed up(monitor did not detect anything so the monitor did not show anything).
Here's what I have done so far:

1. I used memtest86 and done 3 full tests, no errors on any tests.

2. Did anti-virus and anti-spyware scan on my computer(I used: Avast, Spybot, Adaware).

3. Checked Windows Event Viewer(unfortunately it didn't log anything).

Here's the last things I did to my computer before I noticed the freezings:
1. I downloaded and installed Secunia PSI.

2. I downloaded and installed the latest version of WinRAR and Quicktime player(recommendations from Secunia).

3. I also installed various security patches from microsoft update.

Besides that, nothing in particular.

2nd Problem, occasionally when i turn on the computer it wont boot up. The screen will turn on and stop with a dash blinking in the top left corner, not proceeding to any boot up of any kind, and just recently while i shut it down from this sort of freezing up, little pictures of pixel hearts and dots started appearing until i shut it off. I unistalled AVG cause there was a process running that is supposed to be a Trojan, and a program said AVG was running it. So, I deleted it, was prompted to restart, so I did. It took literally 10 minutes to shut down and restart. At worst, my old computer took 5 minutes. (P4 2.8, 1.5 gigs ram, ATI Radeon 9800). So, how do I fix this? The first thing which strikes me is that you have 2 anti-virus applications on your computer ( Zone Alarm security suite and AVG Free) Having two anti virus applications running on your PC can give conflicts so I suggest you uninstall one.For the antispyware applications do you have all real time protection enabled?..I first would try Microsoft online test and see what comes up. The freezing can also indicate faulty memory, there for run a Memtest to rule that out.

Hello everyone - I am a new member of the forum and hope that someone reading this might be able to help me with a problem I have with my computer.

In recent weeks the computer screen keeps freezing with the cursor being replaced by the hour glass symbol. This usually happens after several hours' computer usage - but sometimes it occurs soon after the computer is turned on.

When this happens, I am unable to log off; the computer on/off button does not work when the screen freezes and I have to turn the computer off at the mains.

In order to be able to log back into my broadband internet connection I have to turn the computer and and off twice and then on again .

Sometimes when the computer screen image freezes a message box appears always saying "End programme" (i.e. "End programme - CiceroUIWndFrame" or "End programme - mixer").

My computer runs on the Windows XP operating system.

I changed from Internet Explorer browser 6 to 7 yesterday but the problem of the computer screen freezing persists.

Any helpful advice on this would be much appreciated.

How old is your computer? Have you ever reinstalled your OS?

What I usually recommend is if your computer is at least a couple of years old and have yet to do a clean install of your Operating System now is the time, especially when it starts acting up =)

I think its something wrong with my computer (but no sure the problem) or it might be something wrong with the graphic card. I can telll the difference between lag of a game and the game just freezing up for no apparent reason.

If you need me to say what kind of computer i have or what graphic card i currently have, please say so.

If there is a program that i need to download to help fix this problem, i trust you guys seeing as you know more than i do.

I have a presario 5000 (1.47 ghz, 80 gb i think, cdrw, dvdrw, 512 mb) that has been habitually freezing. A year ago i brought it in to be fixed, where frye's put in a new harddrive. After 6 months i put it away in the garage, until today where i took it back out to put it together. I read many threads on this site, and thus i put together the computer, checked each loose wire, and reinstalled all of XP. It was working fine, but now it freezes more and more often. The computer does not seem to freeze for any reason, such as that i played a complicated game or the same action prompts it to freeze, but instead the computer just stops, sometimes when im not doing anything at all.
I consulted some friends about this, as my knowledge of computers is very lacking. Some suggested perhaps a problem in the motherboard connecting to the internal harddrive, and thtat i should get an external harddrive connected to a pci slot, redirecting the data around the possible glitch. Another said that my memory cards are not error protected, and thus can not overcome small glitches. I also think it could be because of overheating, since the more recently it was used it seems to freeze faster.

Hello

Let me get this stright you had your computer in the garage for a while is this correct??

Bad place to store a computer Cold damp dust not good for electronics

Lets see if it is a heat issue does this happen all the time or only when you play games?? if so open the side of the case blow a small floor fan in to it see if it still acts up.

This could be a lot of issues from power supply up to the motherboard itself.

Hello

I, too, am having problems with my computer freezing randomly and have to switch it off completely.  It started a few weeks ago and also had the monitor switching itself on and off too.  For the monitor I updated the drivers at nvidia but it was still doing it intermittently, so today I updated from a Windows update.  However the computer freezing is really bad today (about 6-7 times so far).  I am using:

Vista 2007, SP2, 32 bit
Acer Aspire X1800

I would really appreciate some assistance.  Please let me know what further info you require (am trying to post this quickly before I freeze again!)

Thanks in advance
Mags

Im currently running windows xp professional with SP2. My processor is an AMD athlon xp 1900+ 1.60GHz with 512 RAM. I will turn my computer on in the morning, look up a few things then ill have class. I will return in like 2 hours or sooner and it has froze. Everything completely quit working, including the time on the task bar. After I restart the computer, it will work fine because I will be doing something on it right up until I turn it off. But it seems once I leave it be, it will just freeze up. I have nothing running in the background but my AIM, when it freezes. I have looked up other forums and read those. but I figured I will post my problem and get first hand help. I was just wondering what the problem could be.

Thanks

A:My computer keeps freezing!!!

well for one thing it could be your your screensaver or it could be your power management. If it is your screensaver just change it. If its not, what you do is go to the start menu, click on settings and then control panel.Go to performance and maintenance and then scroll down and click power options.Under turn off monitor, turn off hard disks, system stand by and system hibernates, select never for all of them. That might do the trick.

My computer keeps freezing a lot lately. I once took it to be upgraded to windows 7 ultimate. Originally it was a Windows vista Home Premium. After the upgrade everything was fine for about a month or two. Then while i was playing Combat Arms, I got a Blue Screen. This has been going on for a while. Sometimes when i start it, it asks me if i want to Launch Startup Repair. I clicked it and it said it was loading files then the computer just restarts. Sometimes while the windows logo is coming up it freezes and have to press the power button. Then while it is logging me in to my computer it may also freeze. If it doesn't i start the internet and start playing Combat Arms. Then it usually freezes during the loading menu. Sometimes the screen just stays the same and i cant control it with the keyboard or the mouse. All I can do is turn it off and hope it doesn't happen again. Now more frequently it happens. I thought it was the game so I deleted it and stopped playing it. But the freezings of my computer have not gone down. I have searched for viruses and it says it has not found any. I really want to start playing Combat Arms again, so if anyone gots any advice please don't hesitate to tell me. And my computer, before it had the upgrade, had 6 RAM sticks and they took out 3 RAM sticks. Now someone please help me.

A:My computer keeps freezing

You say you had 6 sticks of Ram before the upgrade what happened to other three. It sound like the guy who did your upgrade took the other 3 sticks may that is why I think your computer crashes.

I have worked on this computer 2 times previously for the same problem.

It has an Asus P3B-F mainboard, Celeron 400 CPU(in a S370 adapter) 64MB RAM, ATI X'Pert 98 video card, and USR modem and Creative sound card

The first time I replaced the mainboard and the video card the second time I reformatted the HDD and did a clean reinstall of Win98.

Each time the computer worked again for a few months and then started freezing again. This time I swapped the RAM, updated the BIOS and the video drivers but it still freezes. Often it freezes as it is partway through Scandisk, which is running because the computer was shut down improperly since it had frozen while it was in use, so I have run a surface scan but it shows up okay.

What else can I try? Could it be the processor? I have tried pretty much every thing else.

About a Month and a half ago my computer started having issues with freezing up.

My internet slows to a crawl then stops. My roommates internet is unaffected. Then everything locks up for 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Computer then un-freezes and continues as if nothing happened.

I have no clue what the issue is. I tried unplugging all spare HDD's, fans, and various other things. I re-installed windows and ran that almost fresh for 2 weeks and still had an issue.

The only common factor seems to be high internet usage. Steam trying to download a game, loading a video on YouTube, gif's, ect.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

System Specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
(bbLean shell replacment...this is not the issue i tested a clean install and it had the same issue)
CPU: AMD-fx6300
Mother Board: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P (bad Ethernet drivers but i use a WiFi card)
Graphics: Evga GeForce gtx 650
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4x2 @1600mHz
WiFi card: TP-LINK TL-WN951N
PSU: Rosewill 400 watt PSU

A:Computer Freezing

You should only download drivers from the Gigabyte web site for your motherboard. If you have bad drivers, then you have gotten them from somewhere else.
Go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, right click the demgmt.msc results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager are there any devices with yellow flags? Even if there aren't;
Download the Chipset and LAN driver from the Gigabyte page for your model: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-78LMT-S2P (rev. 5.x) and any other drivers you require from the Device Manager.
Freezing is usually caused by overheating. After updating your drivers, shut down the computer and take the side off, and clean out all dust and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Be sure to keep all fans plugged in and when you start it, and they are all spinning.
Boot into Setup (Bios) go to PC Health. Check the temperatures, and the voltages.

I am fairly knowledable with computers, but am having a bit of a problem. I built myself a computer a few years back. It is something like a 900Mhz AMD and it has more than 512mb of RAM. ANyway, for a long time now, it has been freezing while I am working on it. I just went through and cleaned the whole thing. I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of windows xp.

After doing this, it is still freezing, so I pretty much know it is hardware related. Sometimes when I start my computer, the colors are SOOOO messed up. It is so bad, to the point that nothing is readable. The only way I can fix this is holding the button and forcing a shut down. Usually the second time it boots, it comes up fine. It still freezes though. Last night it froze on me 3 times in 45 minutes. This was when I was doing random things, and there doesn't seem to be any correlation with what I'm running for programs, time of day, etc.

My question is, is there a good cheap (or free) program out there that will somehow check your hardware and see if there is any malfuction with it? My guess is something is wrong with either my memory or my video card that might be causing the freez ups. I just would like to know before I buy new parts, replace them and find out it didn't fix a thing. Thanks in advance for any help. It is much appreciated!!

Memtest86 will test your memory.
Everest Will allow you to monitor system temps, and identify all your hardware.
Most logical suspects in these cases are
1) overheating - blow out case, make sure all fans are running, try running with the side off
2) failing memory - run memtest86
3) failing PSU
4) blown or leaking capacitors on motherboard.

Hi, not sure if this is the correct forum, but after a while my pc will freeze, the screen goes blank and the pc just stop responding. The monitor comes up with no signal. The power light on the pc stays on and so does the hd light. Only way to to overcome this problem is to hold the power button in and reboot. Now this has happend a few times, even when the pc is "at rest" by that I mean just sat downloading. Could it be a virus? I have PC Cillin installed and it hasn't detected anything. Suggestions please....
Also, just played c&c zero hour for the first time in ages, and after about a minute of playing, I self destruct, Coincidence? I have recently replaced my motherboard and graphics card, which after some minor problems now runs fine. The Freezing problem has only started a couple of days ago. The pc has been running fine untill now.

A:Computer freezing

my first guess would be you might have an under-powered power supply. What graphics card and mobo do you have and how many watts on that psu?

The more info you post on your specs, its somewhat easier to determine the problem*

I have to reset my computer in order for it to be shut down because once it freezes for too long it does not become unfrozen. Sometime over the past few months, when using IE [now 11] my computer started randomly and suddenly freezing for about a minute - nothing will free it up - and then just as suddenly it will continue with no error or other indication. Nothing is written to an event log. I've disabled every add-on and it has made no difference.

Chrome doesn't do it. FireFox doesn't do it. Safari doesn't do it. In fact, except for when you are in IE it never ever happens.

As I said, I've disabled all of the add-ons. I've also run every single FixIt solution that seemed even vaguely related to no effect. I updated my nVidia display driver. I removed that graphics card and driver and installed a different one. Nothing changes the symptom of the PC randomly locking up when running IE. I didn't really expect it to since it never occurs when running any other browser or program.

Does this issue ring a bell with anyone? Better yet, does anyone know how I can fix it - other than just never using IE?

Thanks in advance...

A:IE is freezing my computer for 30-60 sec...

What antivirus app/suite are you using?

Have you tried another (fresh) Windows user account/profile?

Did you ever solve this issue:
Desktop icons play hide and go seek...
Maybe try Desktop Restore.

Hello, I have built my own PC and i'm pretty good with computers myself. However lately i've been experiencing a problem and its been running great until a few weeks ago. I have made no hardware changes since then except adding 4GB RAM. My computer has frozen 5 or 6 times since then. I'm not sure if its heat, or what really, but heat is my best guess since i noticed some of my tempatures are unusally higher than what they were.

I have an Intel i7 930 2.8GHz not OC! With Elitegroup X58B-A2 motherboard under the hood and an 850 Watt Power supply with Nvidia Geforce 295 GTX MFG by Gigabyte. Currently have 8GB PNY DDR3 1333 RAM (4x2GB) equipped with a case fan extra only. The case fan runs at a lil less than 1,000 RPMs which i'd like to jack up. CPUID Hardware Monitor is what i use to check my tempatures. my CPU cores run between 55-70 degrees Celsuis idle now, why i'm not sure? My GPU core will run from 60 to 70 celsuis, i've never seen it over 70, as by the time it's 70 i experience a freeze. Possibly a GPU temp high? However i have read up that 70 is fine for this card to handle.

My best estimation is my Memory overheating, however i have ran multiple memory tests and they experience no errors. and I have done some CPU benchmarking/stress testing and i've seen my CPU reach 88 degrees and still run fine. Why? I dunno because 88 is very high so my CPU is high yes, but not enough to cause a freeze. Now i've played music while fr... Read more

Those idle temps are really high. I think your case isn't providing for much aurflow. What case are you using? Also, what are the ambient temperatures like?

hi everyone
my computer has really been giving me some problems lately.
it used to be that every so often when running a movie file or webcam or anything of that sort, my computer would freeze completely and i'd have to restart. now its gotten past that stage, and will often freeze even if im not doing anything.
does anyone have any ideas?
i have 512 mb of ram, so I dont know if that could be the problem.
i have an nvdia geforce 4 mx... maybe that?
or my power supply? a 400 watt stock one.
definitely isn't a software problem either.
thanks for the help
