Computer freezing

Q: Computer freezing

I have a Gateway DX420B, Windows XP. I use Mozilla Firefox. The computer has started freezing when I click on any drop-down box. It lasts until I close the browser and restart it. I do have a Windows xp operating system disc.

RELEVANCY SCORE 200
Preferred Solution: Computer freezing

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Computer freezing

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

I recently built my first PC three days ago...
Specs:
i7 bloomfield 960 processor
4x4 vengeance ram
crosair hx850 PSU
evga x58 ftw3 mobo
hd 6870 radeon graphics xfx

When I first installed windows it started to work just fine but I soon noticed that it would randomly freeze every 15-30 minutes of use, but not on a particular program or anything. I assumed it was drivers so I installed the latest drivers for my GPU and MOBO and keyboard. It seemed fine again until it started crashing again. I ran a GPU burn test and a CPU burn test it passed both... (I tried runing memtest86+ but it froze at like 12%) Then I tried fixing the registry so I downloaded ccleaner and fixed the registry problems. Freezes continued. I finally decided to re install windows so I did and the problems still continued. I am at a loss of what to do and can't think of anything else.

any advice would be appreciated if not I will bring to a repair shop and have them sort it out.

Hello Skytri and welcome to Seven Forums. My usual disclaimer: I'm not at expert at anything.

I'm wondering if there isn't a RAM problem. Perhaps one of the sticks wasn't seated properly, etc. You could open Resource Monitor > Memory tab and make sure all RAM is being recognized. Make sure Installed = 16384MB and the Available + Cached + Hardware Reserved is the same amount. (You are using 16GB total, correct?)

Resource Monitor

If Memtest freezes you could try a quick check for a bad RAM module. Install one stick in Slot # 1 (or whichever slot the mobo manual says to use.) Run the computer to test for freezes. Test each of the remaining sticks one at a time. If all 4 sticks work you might want to go through these troubleshooting guides. They are time consuming but many people have been able to isolate their computer problems.

Hello,

I'm going to post two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart
My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen and I have no higher computer knowledge.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Thanks,

A:Random Computer Freezing - Need to hard restart after freezing No BSOD

Wow, this sounds like the same thing that happened to a friend of mine when his hard drive was failing. Replaced the drive and the freezes went away. Even the buzzing noise.

Also you may need to look at what drivers you may have just install/updated.

Hoping you don't have any failing hardware "Motherboard, video card, etc". Those are expensive

A:Computer Freezing; Slowing Down. But mostly freezing. I have my HiJackThis! Log File.

I don't see anything in your log or your description of your problem to come to the conclusion that your problem is malware related. When there is malware present there will always be other internet related symptoms like popups or a browser hijack etc...

I will advise you to uninstall Microsoft Anti-Spyware as the version you have is very old and no longer supported. It in now called Windows Defender.

Here are some routine maintenance practices that you should do on a regular basis to keep your machine running efficiently. Go through this now and see if it helps:

Disk Cleanup:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm

Defrag your HD:

http://artsweb.bham.ac.uk/artsit/Info/Guides/GoodPractice/defrag-win2kxp.htm

Run chkdsk:

To use Chkdsk, click Start and My Computer. Right-click the hard drive you want to check, and click Properties. Select the Tools tab and click Check Now. Check both boxes. Click Start. You'll get a message that the computer must be rebooted to run a complete check. Click Yes and reboot. Chkdsk will take awhile, so run it when you don't need to use the computer for something else.

Remove unnecessary startups

This should be done through the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig.
Click OK or hit the Enter key.

Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the check by the items that you have determined are unnecessary. Click "Apply" then "Close"

You will be prompted to ... Read more

Hello, I'm having an issue with my computer.

My computer has started to restart/freeze up on me. The thing is, it has graphical issues once it freezes/tries to reboot. I get all these lines through the screen, graphical glitches when trying to go through the BIOS, etc. The computer isn't too slow, it isn't acting strange, the only thing that is wrong is the obvious freezing/restarting with graphical lines and glitches once it freezes.

My video card has been going out for a long time(I share a computer with a few people and they seem to think the video card is ok, but I have always seen small glitches in graphics here and there), so I am thinking maybe this might be a problem, given the graphical glitches, the horizontal lines going through the screen once it freezes.

When it hits the BIOS, it sometimes shows these same lines with the screen going mostly black.

System specs are:

CPU - Core 2 Duo, speed I don't remember.

Video Card - Geforce 7900 GT 512mb

Ram - 2GB DDR2

Motherboard - Asus, P5N-E SLI

I got this computer a few years back and I am not one to keep updated with specs or talk about them often, so I have forgotten the speed of the CPU and I do not know if I am missing information for you guys.

Solutions I have tried:

Overheating - I used air to filter out all dust/dirt that might be there to harm the computer, I have plenty of fans in there, etc.

Any and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

A:Solved: Computer Freezing/freezing/graphical glitchs

If you're getting graphical 'glitches' while in bios, that's usually a good sign that your graphics card is having issues - however, I have seen this happen with faulty ram. I'd recommend reseating the cards (ensure your computer is off and unplugged whilst doing so) and see if that helps

I called the manufacturer and he said to restore windows to factory settings, so I did that. Things were great for a week or so, but recently my computer has begun freezing again. It happens pretty frequently. Firefox will also freeze when trying to get it to do very little work, like loading two tabs simultaneously, e.g. My AVS found a suspicious file recently and quarantined it, but still, the freezing has continued. Please advise.

And I do not think that I have a Boot CD

Had the day from hell with my computer, antivirus stopped working and my computer got infected. On safe mode with networking, I ran malwarebyte a couple times, cleaned most all of it out. When rebooting to windows, computer became super slow, like 5 minutes to open a window, etc. I had to force reboot a few times. But then I started getting a screen that demanded a reboot disk. Only one I have is. a windows vista disc. I had windows 7. It won't let me even get that blue startup screen where I can push f keys.
Can anyone give me some advice, or do I need to just get a new hard drive.

I have a HP Pavillion dv9417ca Notebook PC with AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile Technology Tl-56, 2.0G Ram, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 with Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2.

The computer when running slowly makes a ton of noise starting up and running and tends to use more processing. The computer sometimes makes weird noises that aren't normal windows sounds and come from error's. Like intense beeping noises ocassionally. Firefox especially is insanely slow and the longer I run it the more processing power it uses up along with the plugins.exe. Sometimes it will uses so much that it completely freezes my computer. Lately I've also been having trouble starting the computer where it won't even load windows.

I've ran Ccleaner daily and Malwarebytes weekly and find nothing and the problem has been getting progressively worse. I have Avast which updates daily.

Recently(about 2 weeks ago), my computer started freezing. It happened 5 times already(one of them occurred as I was typing this post). I wasn't doing anything in particular, just using Firefox to browser the web.

3 of the freezings occurred while I was just browsing, 2 occurred while my computer was starting up. No sites in general either, out of the 3 times I froze, I was on different sites each time(all of them are "known safe ones" too like ign.com, wikipedia, etc).

After the latest freeze(during browsing), I restarted my computer only for my computer to freeze again after 3 seconds(screen stayed the same, it happened right after it showed me my memory test). Then I restarted my computer again and it froze before anything showed up(monitor did not detect anything so the monitor did not show anything).
Here's what I have done so far:

1. I used memtest86 and done 3 full tests, no errors on any tests.

2. Did anti-virus and anti-spyware scan on my computer(I used: Avast, Spybot, Adaware).

3. Checked Windows Event Viewer(unfortunately it didn't log anything).

Here's the last things I did to my computer before I noticed the freezings:
1. I downloaded and installed Secunia PSI.

2. I downloaded and installed the latest version of WinRAR and Quicktime player(recommendations from Secunia).

3. I also installed various security patches from microsoft update.

Besides that, nothing in particular.

Now, its slower then my older computer, which I thought was impossible. I mean...This is pathetic. I unistalled AVG cause there was a process running that is supposed to be a Trojan, and a program said AVG was running it. So, I deleted it, was prompted to restart, so I did. It took literally 10 minutes to shut down and restart. At worst, my old computer took 5 minutes. (P4 2.8, 1.5 gigs ram, ATI Radeon 9800). So, how do I fix this? I have a theory its Microsoft forcing people to upgrade by putting out crappy updates. I mean, for my card, the newest driver is dated the beginning of last year...They come out with a new one but its Vista only. Woo...idiots. So basically it started about 3 days ago, aprox. 4 days after this computer was built. I was playing Battlefield 1942, it froze. I tried 5 times, it froze in different spots at different times. I reinstalled. Same thing. Oblivion goes for about 30 minutes then crashes to the desktop. I then hit the window to maximize again, and it freezes. This has happened everytime as well. I also did older games, same thing, but done differently. Battlefield was the only one that froze the entire computer to where i had to manually shut it off. Then today I randomly check my processes, and theres 2 runn... Read more

The first thing which strikes me is that you have 2 anti-virus applications on your computer ( Zone Alarm security suite and AVG Free) Having two anti virus applications running on your PC can give conflicts so I suggest you uninstall one.For the antispyware applications do you have all real time protection enabled?..I first would try Microsoft online test and see what comes up. The freezing can also indicate faulty memory, there for run a Memtest to rule that out.

2nd Problem, occasionally when i turn on the computer it wont boot up. The screen will turn on and stop with a dash blinking in the top left corner, not proceeding to any boot up of any kind, and just recently while i shut it down from this sort of freezing up, little pictures of pixel hearts and dots started appearing until i shut it off. I can telll the difference between lag of a game and the game just freezing up for no apparent reason.

If you need me to say what kind of computer i have or what graphic card i currently have, please say so.

Hello everyone - I am a new member of the forum and hope that someone reading this might be able to help me with a problem I have with my computer.

In recent weeks the computer screen keeps freezing with the cursor being replaced by the hour glass symbol. This usually happens after several hours' computer usage - but sometimes it occurs soon after the computer is turned on.

When this happens, I am unable to log off; the computer on/off button does not work when the screen freezes and I have to turn the computer off at the mains.

In order to be able to log back into my broadband internet connection I have to turn the computer and and off twice and then on again .

Sometimes when the computer screen image freezes a message box appears always saying "End programme" (i.e. "End programme - CiceroUIWndFrame" or "End programme - mixer").

My computer runs on the Windows XP operating system.

I changed from Internet Explorer browser 6 to 7 yesterday but the problem of the computer screen freezing persists.

Any helpful advice on this would be much appreciated.

How old is your computer? Have you ever reinstalled your OS?

What I usually recommend is if your computer is at least a couple of years old and have yet to do a clean install of your Operating System now is the time, especially when it starts acting up =)

I booted my computer the other day, and to my surprise, a few minutes after it started it froze. As in, the mouse wouldn't move and the keyboard wouldn't (ctrl + alt + delete). And also the countdown for windows update froze. So the whole computer just stopped processing.

I turned it off and booted it back up, and the fans started, but didn't stop, when they usually stop after about 5 seconds, so I knew I had a problem. I turned it back off and back on and it froze this time on the loading screen.

Turned it off and on once more and it booted normally, I ran a virus check and it was all clear. Then it just froze again? I'm sensing a hardware issue :/?

Any ideas?

Joe

Hi,

I have been referred here by an administrator from another thread I posted.

I have pasted parts of that thread here (in red) to give you a background to the problem:

A month or two my pc kept crashing and when I tried to reload I got the BOOTMGR IS CORRUPT. THE SYSTEM CANNOT BOOT. I basically turn PC of and on about 20 times and eventually it started working. Sometimes instead of that message it would say THE FILE HEADER CHECKSUM DOES NOT MATCH THE COMPUTED CHECKSUM. This kept happening with more and more regularity until I contacted Packard Bell who advised to restore to factory settings which I did.

PC worked fine for a month after but I have just returned from a weeks holiday and within five mins of turning PC on, it has happened again.

The problem is back in full force. Freezing, clear white screen then when I reset it either:

1. turns starts to load windows buit then resets itself repeatedly
2. Starts to load windows but then gives the BOOTMGR message
3. Starts to load windows but then gives the CHECKSUM message

One time it even said something about a disk not loading - cant remember the exact message, probably because of the descending red mist...

One time the freeze happened I was listening to Spotify and that kept playing perfectly, yet everything on screen was unresponsive (except the mouse cursor).

On the advice of an admin, I ran memory test, HD tests and then Malware. Upon running the malware scan it found this: TROJ_BHO.RKN

An admin advised ... Read more

Recently built a new PC with a friend. It runs like a beast but I have been having some issues. It has frozen about 5 times since I got it last week. The freezes happened at various times. Once right before booting up a game, once right after exiting a game, once while in a game, and once while loading firefox. I thought it might be the RAM so I checked the BIOS and changed the RAM timings to default. I also ran memtest for a few hours and it found no errors. After changing the timings I had no freezes for about 3 days, but earlier this afternoon I froze right after booting up when loading firefox again. They are the kind of freezes where I must do a hard reset by holding down the power button.

Possibly related, there are some problems with at least 2 USB ports. I have a wireless mouse/keyboard and USB WiFi adapter. Sometimes the mouse will start lagging. When this happens, the internet speed nearly dies. (In other words, mouse lagging and drop in internet speed happens at the same time). It will take several minutes to load a website. The problem will go away on its own eventually, or right away if I reboot.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

Ok, my PC has been freezing up many times per day for the past couple of months since my last reformat. Strange thing is that it would freeze up mainly when I am on the net. Never when I am playing a game or anything like that. I got sick of it and reformatted everything recently. After the format, I loaded up some basic necessary progs and softs that I use alot. Nothing too much. Everything went fine. No freeze ups. The computer was on for a day straight and not ONE problem.

However, a couple days afterwards, I load a couple of other programs AND Windows informs me of updates available. I download the many updates and I do NOT restart like it asks yet. This morning, after alot of overnight downloading, I finally restart my computer. A little while after that, it FREEZES up!! And then it freezes up two more times! It is the exact same thing happening!! I have surmised that:

1- It may be hardware since I have had it awhile and use my computer ALOT. My mobo and chip aren't top of the line.

2- It is not all the things I have downloaded because the PC rarely freezes when using it.

3- I seem to remember having the same problem last format AFTER I downloaded those million Windows fixes. This is, I think, the problem.

My specs:
AMD Duron 850
FIC mobo
384MB RAM
NVIdia Ti200

40 GB WD 7500RPM HD

Windows XP

Hey guys i am hoping to find a solution to a problem with my computer.

Basically it is continually freezing, like non stop and i have to restart the computer everytime it does it. I managed to run a few test such as hw monitor, all temps are fine. Also ran an intel burn trst and my cpu ran fine on all 5 teat on both notmal loading and also maxing on cpu. I have tried running further diagnostics but now my computer freezes withing 5 minutes of startup so i cant run nor even get the chance to download the software. To add to that i have cleaned the entire inside of the computer, the cpu fan was extremely dirty so i thought i had fixed the problem when i cleaned the heck out of it, however this has not solved it. And lastly i have taken out slots of ram one at a time and ran the computer to test for ram failure and this didnt solve it unless by some miracle chance all 3 sticks or ram have failed at once. Anyone know what else could cause it, oh and sometimes it gets past the freezing to the point it goes to the blue screen of death.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

I have searched through several threads on this forum relating to my problem, and I'm unable to find anyone whose problem exactly duplicates mine.

My system consists of the following:
Gigabyte 7VTXE+ M/board with VIA chipset
AMD Athlon XP1800+ CPU
256mb DDR PC2100 (Samsung brand)
Samsung 20Gb HDD
Gainward GF4 Ti4200 vid card
Soundblaster Live 5.1 sound card
Genius 56k modem
some poxy no name brand network card
Aopen 40/12/48 cd writer
running Win2k pro with sp3

My problem started when I replaced the CPU. I used to use a 900 Duron in the exact same system with no problems at all, as soon as I installed the XP1800 it just randomly froze, but VERY regularly and I can't Ctrl-Alt-Del my way out of it. I'm lead to believe that it may be power supply. Also, I plugged in my friends Leadtek GF2 GTS pro vid card, and it runs a bit more reliably, but I now receive runtime errors, but with nowhere near the regularity.

HELP!! Any advice would be gratefully received, as I am about at my wits end.

Thanks

Awhile ago i built a comp for myself. And now i'm building one for my cousin, same components. But for some reason the one i built for him freezes. Can anyone help me trouble shoot this? It doesnt freeze up right away, i had to wait awhile for it to go bad.

Motherboard: Asus p5n-d
Cpu: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 640gb
Graphics Card: Xfx 9800 gt 512mb
PSU: Coolmax 700watts
Vista 64bit

The first signs of the comp freezing was during vista install. I had to keep on reinstalling vista because it freezes during install. But i managed to install vista clean. I tried swapping out components from my computer (because i know my computer works without a problem) but still it freezes. I tried switching the memory sticks to different slots, and doing 1 stick at a time, nothing works. Seems like when i put in 2 memory sticks, it freezes up faster. How would i know if its the memory's problem? or the motherboard? or the cpu? So i can return it and get a replacement.

A:Help! my computer keeps on freezing

You got a bad power supply unit. It's from an unreputable brand, cheapo crap, you were lucky that even the one you used for your own worked properly. Get a quality unit from Corsair, OCZ, Enermax, Silverstone, PC Power & Cooling, Seasonic. 600 W should be well enough.

This is just a guess, as we haven't really tested anything, but based on that your tried several good-known components from your own rig, it's very probable.

Hey there guys, Im in a need of help. After I've solved problems with your help (http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic122718.html and http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic123368.html) everything worked fine. Then one day, I turn my PC on and it starts lagging. Later it just started freezing etc. Now, I noticed it freezes when I run a game, when my graphics cards controller startups are working and when I use my CD/DVD-Rom.

I decrease my BIOS Onboard Video Memory from 8MB to 4MB.
Tried decreasing the AGP to 4X on my Video cards controller.

I've been reading around on what could be the problem. Well, my CPU is fine, looking from the pic bellow.

My specs:

1,25 GB or RAM.
Windows XP Pro SP3
ATI RADEON 9600 Graphics card.
2 Hard drives with enough disc space or anything.

That's about it, I hope you will help me fix this, cuz it is fustrating having all of these problems.

A:Computer freezing

Could be the power supply. Could be the graphics card which could be related to the drivers or overheating. Could be quite a number of things really. Lowering the amount of memory the onboard video is using in the bios shouldnt change anything because it should be using the ATI 9600. Also lowering the AGP speed shouldn't make a difference.

Are you saying it is laggy all the time in Windows, and freezes completely in games?

My system showed signs of this when my graphics card overheated. Have you tried opening the case and checking the state of the fans on the graphcs card? The 9600 is a pretty old card - if you havent blown the dust out of the fan recently (a spraycan of air is best for that) that could be the problem.

In fact, open it and give it a clean anyway

Riteo lads, I was starting up the computer and I got a big dirty blue screen saying all sorts of nonsense such as:

Page_Fault_In_NonPaged_Area

Uninstall recently installed hardware etc etc

Disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing

And the bit that scares me:

Completed dump of physical memory.

Another warning screen:

Problem seems to be caused by the following file: win32.sys

Driver mistakenly marked a part of its image pageable instead of non-pageable.

Anyone have any idea what this gibberish is about? I guess this is the reason my computer keeps freezing? How do I fix this problem?

I already asked him what programs are running when it happens. He said it can be any programs that are open when it freezes up. I ran ad aware in safe mode and found a few tracking cookies. The ad aware was also updated. I checked his task manager to see his running processes and CPU usage. There is alot in there, but i manually checked each listing to ensure it is not obvious spyware, malware, etc. He said it happens when he is online, but admitted that the only time his PC is on is when he is online. A noticeable thing that happens when my computer freezes is the computer sounds like it is in under stress and is working hard at something.

I recorded the time of when the computer froze and went into Event Viewer to see if I can find anything at that time and I found a lot of stuff.

I have uploaded a .evtx file with the information that event viewer gave me on the time when the computer froze.

Hello everyone. I am experiencing a problem where my computer freezes when I play a game. It doesn't BSOD, simply the image and the sound freezes. Five minutes after I connect to a Counter Strike: Source server or when a Modern Warfare 3 match starts, my computer freezes. This does not occur 100% of the time as I was able to play a session of Counter Strike: Source without this problem occurring. This problem has not occurred outside of gaming. However, this has happened a total of three times in less than two days. This is only happening after there was a power outage in my home. My computer is new and custom made, I will list the specs:

Hi there.

For a few weeks now my laptop has been freezing (as in all functions stop, it isn't shutting down by itself though) usually every two days although yesterday and the day before, it was two days in a row.

What's strange is that it only ever happens between 8 & 10pm. I've sometimes left my computer on all night (after that time) and it never has this problem or earlier during the day.

Also, it hasn't happened during that time period, when I've disconnected the internet (I disconnect the internet when I watch dvds otherwise it's likely to freeze).

I've done scans for viruses and spyware but it isn't finding anything other than tracking cookies.

Here's my system info.

System Information
Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233)

Hi. I have Windows XP. I recently had a virus that was resolved a couple weeks ago. Ever since my computer periodically freezes for no apparent reason. Here are my logs. I do not have access to a Windows Install disc, or a Boot CD. Thanks.

I have a Compaq Presario 7000. It has XP Pro with 256MB RAM. For some reason the computer freezes after 30 minutes or so of being powered on. I thought it was bad RAM.

I remove the old ram and replace with new one and still does it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Test for overheating.

Pull the side cover and place a small desk type fan blowing air into the case. If it stops, you have found the cause; overheating.

If that does not work, restart the system in safe mode. While in safe mode run an app that will stress the system like prime95. If it runs prime95 for an hour or two without errors, you have a problem with a driver, software app, etc. If it locks up in safe mode, you have a hardware issue.
