Can't delete files without a duplicate file appearing

Q: Can't delete files without a duplicate file appearing

I'm running Windows XP on my laptop and my hard drive is almost full. I have been trying to delete files, but everytime I try to delete a file, a duplicate file is created. How can I delete files permanently without creating duplicate files?

Preferred Solution: Can't delete files without a duplicate file appearing

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am suffering a bout of duplications in my Windows Photo Gallery under Vista. I am getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruple versions of the original file.
Despite turning off all Autoplay media types to 'No Action', I get random duplicates when I try to enter update pictures from camera or memory chip through a USB port. There is no 'Enter Updates Only' option, and Microsoft says that this is unnecessary as
duplication is prevented. The duplicates however appear with 'copy' in the file name after the image numbering system. My preference is to view the memory contents via 'Computer' - select and open the port, and view, then copy and paste into Photo
Gallery.  Photo Gallery kicks in to view the chip correctly, but often/always (?) promptly uploads uncommanded. It did not used to do this, only in the last year or two.
What do I do, it is driving me crazy ?

Hi! I use the free version of CCleaner to list duplicate files, many of which are dll or java script files along with a few dic files. Almost all of them in a group have the same name, size and creation date, but have different paths. Those paths share an initial path, but then differ to one or two different sub-folders.
So my question is this: which, if any, of the dupes can be deleted? In other words, if I retain the highest level of a file and delete the dupes in its sub-folder, am I asking for trouble?

A:Which duplicate dll files to delete?

Leave them alone. DLL type files take up very little room and you run a VERY real risk of messing something up.
CCleaner is a fine program however do not use the registry cleaner part nor the part you are attempting to use.

A:should i delete duplicate files on my computer?

Hi, That is one of the weak part of Windows - and other software. Each software creates its own folder and it normally uses that folder to run. Windows should be smart enough to store common files in only one spot but it can't work this out ! You can delete them BUT please note them where they are because you may have restore them back for other programs. My suggestion: keep them, few hundred megabytes now are just a piece of cake. Regards.

I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.

But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).

For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.

Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.

So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.

My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?

Thanks in advance.

A:Can I delete the SkyDrive duplicate files in my laptop?

Copied this from the skydrive FAQ.
What does the SkyDrive folder do?

When you install the SkyDrive desktop app for Windows, a copy of your SkyDrive is downloaded to your PC and put in theSkyDrive folder. This folder is kept in sync with SkyDrive. If you add, change, or delete a file or folder on SkyDrive.com, the file or folder is added, changed, or deleted in your SkyDrive folder and vice versa.

After upgrading from XP to Windows 7 (on a new computer) and making several abortive attempts to transfer my Outlook Express Folders and Addresses to Outlook, I have succeeded in making thousands of duplicates before finally "getting it right." Is there an easy way to globally delete duplicates rather than doing them one at a time?

I suppose I could delete all the folders and addresses and start over with the successful transfer method. If I did this how would the deletion process work? The latter method kind of scares me because I have over 14 years of data invoved.

Thanks for any suggestions.

What I would do is export the addresses from Outlook Express to a Excel spreadsheet. Check them and make sure it looks complete. Go into your Outlook Address Book. You can hold down Shift and Page Down and it will highlight all adresses. When they are all highlighted, just hit delete. That should get rid of them. You can then import the spreadsheet with the correct Address Book and you should be in shape. It shouldn't take too long.

Hi, I am connected to the internet using a iinet BOB2 wireless modem and I'm using a Mac OS X at the moment.

When I enter my WPA key to connect to the network the dialog box says incorrect password. There are no issues with the password because I know how to change it and have tried various different versions in an attempt to explore the issue. Intermittently the connection does work however it then drops out again.

When I click the airport icon my network name appears as usual but a duplicate name also appears. I find this quite unusual, and the technical support person from iinet hadn't heard of it, because the name is the same but also has extra characters added to the end including garbled fonts (ie. wingdings). The name also appears and re-appears with different characters each time.

I share a wall with a neighboring university which has an extensive internet network covering a large area. I wonder if this is some kind of interference? or in a more sinister vein some kind of hacking attempt to get me to enter my WPA key?

I also have a Toshiba laptop which I've been using to double check the issues, but it has always had connectivity issues so I'm not sure its reliable. It is also intermittently picking up on this duplicate signal too but sometimes exclusively this and not the 'real' signal. When I try to connect to the 'real' signal it says acquiring network address and then stops and does not connect.

I started out with the two previous posts about macros (post 1, post 2) that move rows into columns, but I'm having a little trouble getting it to work for what I need. First, I'm trying to do a data merge into Word, but in order to get the data merge to work/look the way I want it to, I need the XLS data to be in columns.

I'm attaching an example file that has one worksheet of the sample data (though my "real" data has about 300 rows) and the other worksheet is an example of the outcome I need.

Is there anyway I can do what I need? Exporting into another file or another worksheet within this file would be fine.

Thanks in advance.

Just started running file history, seems like it might be a good feature. It backed up a lot of stuff that wasn't necessary and its seems to be a hassle to delete them, is there any easy way?

I backup to a folder on an Ubuntu computer through my home network. Oops, after about 5 minutes, up pos could not find this item, check "Do this for all current items, then click Skip, another 20 seconds or so it's done.

So, I'm extremely confused.

I simply tried to delete an mp3 file that I had, but it said "You require permission from an admin". I've encountered this before, so I knew what to do for the most part. I right-clicked, selected "Take Ownership", but still couldn't delete it. I went to properties... and this is what showed up:

I don't get it, inside the folder it just looks like a simple mp3 file.
Does anyone know why it's telling me the file has 12 files in it?
EDIT: So, it's changed to a regular mp3 file now... but I still cannot delete it. At all. I'm and admin on this computer (and the only user, I might add) and I still can't get rid of it.

A:Can't delete an .mp3 file (properties says it has 12 files in it...?)

Move the file to the c: root. Just to make it easier. Open a CMD as admin. type cd.. hit enter. Do this again till your at the c: root. Now type del /f filename "filename is the name of the file you want to delete". Hit enter. Hope this helps.

I recently transferred a large quantity of files from my XP machine to my Vista x64 machine. All went well except for a small group of successfully transferred (Thunderbird) .eml files that cannot be opened, moved, copied, deleted, or renamed on the Vista machine.

If I try to delete the entire containing folder I get the following error:
This folder contains items whose names are too long for the recycle bin.

If I try to delete, open, copy or move the files themselves I get the following error:
The source file name(s) are larger than supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter file names before attempting this operation.

The right-click context menu does not display the "rename" option (although rename is available for other files)

Anyone know how I can get rid of these?

Can you move the folder to the root of the drive as in "C:" ? That may shorten the path enough to get them deleted. When you delete them hold the shift key to bypass the recycle bin.

Most likely you opened the pdf with reader - when you close reader it does not really close and retains the pdf files..

If you open task manager you will see that reader is still a running process - even though it is closed..

All the metro apps seem to do the same thing - you close and the process stays open.

I was recently transferring data from my camera card reader to my laptop (Dell, XP), when an error caused me to lose some of my files from my camera memory card (JPG & AVI). I ran data recovery software and managed to retrieve all of the files from my memory card. The files are now 'read only' and I can not delete, rotate or move their location. I have tried un-checking the 'read only' setting in 'properties' , only for it to return to 'read only' once I re-open it. If I try to delete the folder or a file individually, I get an error message saying;

'Cannot delete (file name). Access is denied. Make sure the disc is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use'

The file is not currently in use. I still get this error message even with all programs are closed as well as after re-starting my laptop.

During the file recovery process, I ended up with multiple copies of the same folder (and there were a lot of photos in there) and not being able to delete these files means they are clogging up my laptop. I
would also like to be able to rotate some of the images and put them on a memory card for a friend.

If any one can give me any advice I'd be very grateful.

Thank you very much!

A:Create a batch file to delete folders and files

deltree is a DOS/Windows 9x command.
In Windows NT 4 and higher (2000, XP, Vista, 7), you use rd /s (subdirectories)
If you want to do it without prompt you'd use the /q (quiet) flag
if you want to run it on different users' computers (with different usernames) use environment variables
to know what they are, open a command prompt window and type set
to access specific variables, use the % sign
for example in my computer, if you type %temp% in the address bar, it'll take you to that folder.

Been using Glary's Utilities 3 to clean things up. When I ran its "Duplicate" cleaner, there were many duplicates with iTunes and my pictures. My problem is that I don't know which to delete and which to keep. Here are screen shots to give you an idea of what the duplicate scan showed (BTW, there are many other areas where there are a mess of duplicates, but to keep things simple-I hope, I've only shown those duplicates that may take up a lot of space:

A:Which duplicate(s) to delete?

Flycaster mate cannot see any screenshots? so cannot comment.

Personally I am not that overly keen on add on software like Glary but it's your choice.

I hope this is the right place to post this... I have had this issue for a long time now, though, it only applies to video files...

Anytime I try to rename/move/delete certain video files I get the error: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer"

I have researched this issue many times online and have not found a solution that works (though I did find a program "Unlocker," which worked for a little while, but stopped after a while).

A:Windows Explorer File Help - I can't rename/move/delete certain files.

Forgot to add, when I get the message saying it is open in Windows Explorer, the file wasn't open in any other program...

I have a root folder called "Names"..It has subfolders ,these subfolders contains files. I will be giving the names of subfolders to be deleted in text file Ex..
I will be reading the folder names from text file & delete only those folders with files inside the folder also .

Please provide me the code for it..I tired some POC's..But it didn't work.

A:Window Batch file to delete folders/subfolders that contain files

Here's some sample batch script,

@echo off

if "%~1"=="" exit /b 1
pushd "%~dp0"

for /f "usebackq delims=" %%I in ("%~1") do (
if exist "%%~fI"\* rd /s /q "%%~fI" && echo Removed folder '%%~nxI'.

Place the above batch file in with the folders that will be removed (i.e. place it inside the "Names" folder), then drop your text file list of folder names to be deleted onto the batch file.

You might want to test out this solution first.

A:Is it safe to delete unsual file extensions that is temporary files??

Never heard of the program/software your talking about there, i always use ccleaner, but if you want to check or clear out temp files just go to run type in %temp% and that will open all temp files and folders and it is safe to delete everything thats in there, so you could use that and compare them !

Hi there,

I told my buddy I wanted to reformat my computer. He went to do that by installing a new Windows 7 64 bit for me, but somehow, I now am operating on the new Windows 7 but my old Windows 7 still exist and is taking up enough space in my hard drive to annoy me

Can someone please let me know how I can delete the old Windows from my hard drive? I'm having to install all the old applications I used to have (Quickbooks, Photoshop etc) and it's eating up the hard drive space due to double applications.

Thanks for the help!

I am using WLM in W7 x 64 bit on my desktop. Recently several duplicate contacts have appeared in my contacts list.
I have tried to delete them by right clicking on the duplicate contact, but in every case the 'delete contact' is greyed out.

Can you please help ?

A:Delete duplicate contacts in WLM

Hello mate now the first that comes to mind is that you run these if you haven't already
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

if those do not fix the problem then a scan with these - just to eliminate anything untoward that may be lurking
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(with ADW if you are running Kaspersky it will throw it up as malware just override Kaspersky by ignoring it or disabling it for the duration of the scan)
