I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So my laptop only starts up in safe mode and when I try to access it through normal startup, a blue screen appears for a short amount of time and then attempts to startup again going on and on in a never ending cycle.

However, I got it running on safe mode and ran Malwaebytes Anti-Malware on safe mode (with networking). However, it didn't pick up anything wrong. What can I do to fix this???

I am having an issue where my computer will start fine in normal mode, but if I try to go into safe mode, it goes into startup repair mode.

Windows 7 Home 64bit, Lenovo desktop. Webroot Secureanywhere.

A little bit of background: OPENVPN was giving me a lot of messages like, "TCP: connect to [AF_INET]109.73.164.47:443 failed, will try again in 5 seconds: The system tried to join a drive to a directory on a joined drive". Contacted my VPN provider regarding this, they questioned where that IP address was coming from because it was not theirs. The IP address is this message would sometimes change, but according to WHOIS all were registred to:

OrgName: RIPE Network Coordination Centre
OrgId: RIPE
Address: P.O. Box 10096
City: Amsterdam

I have no idea personally who this is. Ran the widely accepted malware scanners (Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Rkill, Adwcleaner, Combofix "feel free to scold me...", and I think some rootkit scanners) found Somoto PUP, which I seem to have removed. OPENVPN ceased giving me the "system tried to join a drive" messages.

I want to run Malwarebytes in safe mode to make sure the infections are gone, but every time I F8 and select SAFE MODE or SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING, the computer goes into STARTUP REPAIR mode. I have not selected the RESTORE option, but selecting the REPAIR option just results in the computer hanging and I have to force power off the computer.

Tried googling for this issue, but all I fi... Read more

But it works fine with safe mode and safe mode with networking?? What could be the problem??

Thank you in advance

A:starts on safe mode but not on normal mode

As always, I recommend running a full scan with your installed antivirus suite. Then run a second or third on-demand scanner like Malwarebyes, Hitman Pro, Windows Offline Defender, etc just in case your installed suite missed something.

If this problem just began with a couple of days ago you could try using a restore point to return your computer to a date/time prior to the problem starting.

System Restore

You could also try doing a clean startup (AKA clean boot) to troubleshoot apps and services that may be causing the issue.

Hello All,

My desktop is playing up.

I can't start the system in safe mode, but a normal boot results in lines over the bios loading screens, and the Windows log on screen never shows after the Windows loading screen.

I presume its the Graphics Card but have no other cards/machines to interchange parts to test.

I've re-seated the graphics card and memory, re-installed the graphics driver, cleaned all the dust out, reset the bios, ran the machine with the side off to keep it cool but to no avail, also the monitor is fine as I can use it for other things.

Does anyone have any other ideas of what I can do or do you think I need a new graphics card?

Thanks

I am running using Dell Inspiron with windows vista. A couple days ago, I got on the computer and then it froze, at fist the program I was using froze, and then I got a circle next to the arrow, but could still move the arrow, then the arrow stops moving. CTL ALT DEL does not work, so i must do a hard reboot, try to boot in safe mode and all the files come up but then it goes no where and the computer either restarts or I reboot it.

I have run all types of tests and nothing comes up. Today I got the blue screen of death twice, but after reboot, it goes away. I do not have a Boot Disk and have tried all the tests in the F8 command. Currently I am running an expanded memory test, but figured I would get this out there before I go insane.

Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

Hi All,

Been having this problem since yesterday. Whenever I start up windows, it freezes after a couple of minutes. Tried going into safe mode to run virus scan (Avira and Malwarebytes) but both freeze halfway through scanning and I have to do a hard reset. No idea at all what is wrong with it.

Also find that when I try to open Adobe PDF Reader, it shows this message when I am in normal mode. 'The windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed.' Right after that, it freezes. Not sure if that's relevant.
Please help me! Thanks a lot in advance!

Before coming here, I've run startup repair, scf /scannow, Combofix (not that I learned anything or that it fixed anything.) Malwarebytes, Norton scan, Trendmicro scan

Hi Guys,

I upgraded to Windows 7 back in December and things were going smoothly until two days ago when my computer started freezing.Mouse cursor won't move, control+alt+delete would not work as well.I basically had to turn off the power switch.

Tried system restore the next day, things ran smoothly for the next day until problems returned. Now I can run things fine in safe mode but system freezes after about 10 minutes of use in normal mode.

Also, the processor light stays solid blue all the time now (before it blinked occasionally depending on the nature of the task being performed).

Any ideas?

I apologize if this has been covered in the past so feel free to point me to another post if necessary.

After, what i believe to have been caused by the new service pack upgrade which install overnight, i walked in to find my computer frozen at the Windows XP logo screen.

On restart, it goes through the " windows encountered an error" black screen and I selected the log on as usual option only to have it freeze up on me during the logo screen.

I restart to try safe mode... this time as it boots up processes, it restarts
ive tried every safe mode option to no avail so i cant use the system restore option through safe mode.

I put my XP cd in to try to repair the install, but that freezes as well.

I then went to the recovery console and ran the following commands

chkdsk
fixboot
bootcfg /rebuild

after no luck, i tried to fixmbr but got scared off due to the warning about losing all my information.

Any ideas on what could be causing this issue? im trying to try all options to fix rather than just deleting everything.

if i cant fix, i know long ago i was walked through steps on installing XP on another partition to get into the computer and gather my files before reformatting the whole thing. Can someone tell me how to do that as a last ditch effort as well?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Tcanuth

A:XP will not boot in normal of safe mode / freezes

Hiya Tcanuth.

If you can get back to the command line in the recovery console, type

chkdsk /r

rather than just chkdsk as you then tell it to repair any volume faults it finds which might be all you need to fix things up for you. chkdsk without any parameters just checks the disk but doesn`t do anything else.

Hi,
I am having some problems with my pc right now I have

NFORCE6M-A MOTHERBOARD
AMD 64X X2 5600+
GEFORCE 8400 GS
2 GIG DDR2 MEM
630 PSU

I installed XP, loaded all drivers and it lockes/freezes a couple of secs after I log in or on the Welcome screen if no user is selected within the same amount of time.

I can go into safe mode and move around to do everything else here is what I tried so far

New hard drive with new install

switch out memory

disable startup services in msconfig and try to bring up one at a time. (even when this was done and rebooted system still freezes)

PSU Swapped out

No errors in logs

I had this original problem of whenever I load Windows XP it would just stop responding during the windows loading screen. Its okay when started up by safe mode. So I backed up all my files and did a full format on the drive and reinstalled Windows XP SP2 and restored my files. It was starting fine for the 3-5 restarts, but then it starts experiencing the same problem over again. I never installed any other programs other than Office 2007, and a Virus Software Kaspersky.

I also did a full hardware test. My Laptop is a Dell Latitude D630 and at the DOS startup it gives the option (F12) of running the Hardware Test. The test ran for nearly a whole day and showed as all test passed.

I would appreciate all the help any one can offer.

Recently, I accidentally clicked on a few bad google links. Soon after, my computer started acting weirdly. I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode. I then scanned my computer with avast and spybot s&d. It removed as many trojans, spyware, and adwares that it could find, except a few, the only which of that i remember was a trojan called smit.fraud. So I googled smit.fraud and found that it could be fixed with this tool: http://siri.geekstogo.com/SmitfraudFix.php . After running this, i thought that my problems would be fixed. So, I booted normally and I could still see some icons from the virus like Privacy Protector, Fetish Pics, and weirdly, ESET Nod32 anti-virus, none of which I (deliberately) installed. Then, all of a sudden I saw that my computer had completely frozen up. So, I rebooted, and after a minute or so the same thing happened again. I booted once more and yet again, the same thing happened. So, I tried to log into safe mode, and to my horror, I could not log in and an error popped up saying something to the effect that win... It's gonna take more then just SmitFraudFix. You should also download and run SuperAntiSpyware after you run SmitFraudFix in Safe Mode. SmitFraudFix needs to run in Safe Mode to be effective. Then run a full scan with SuperAntiSpyware when the computer reboots. After you do that download and isntall AVG 8 and do a fulls can with that as well. In the future be more careful when clicking "google" links, no porn is worth reformating a computer for.

My PC will freeze about 1 minute after normal boot but will work flawlessly in Safe Mode, albeit not being able to use most applications like Windows Media Player. It will freeze regardless of logging in and out of any accounts. I even tried making a new account to see if there was a conflict with just my main account, though, to no avail.

Hi, all.

My usually faithful laptop crashed today morning after giving me a blue screen of death, while I was playing a game.
Since then, my PC always freezes immediately after 30secs ~ 1minutes of logging into Vista.
I have tried to reboot the machine in Safe Mode (in Normal Safe Mode, with Networking, with Command Prompt) but it still freezes, albeit I am given a little more time before it goes down.
I have used 'Last Known Good Configuration' - No success here either.
I have attempted 'Repair Your Computer' option during booting. 'Startup Repair' didn't seem to find any problems.
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool also found no problem.
I tried System Restore, and after being a little buggy (freezing once/twice before being successful) it worked but did not solve the problem.
I haven't backed my system in last six months, and I would REALLY prefer not to lose my stuffs on the laptop... My PC is a Samsung R519 with Vista Home Premium (RAM: 3GB, HDD: 320GB, no Graphic/Sound upgrade) I've used SuperAntiSpyware and Avira AntiVir Personal 9, although I've added MSE only last week.

I am literally at my wits end, and would be very grateful for any assistance.

Thanks in advance,

I recently had the Torjan Smitfraud take over my computer. It was first noticed when I turned on my computer one day and say the infamous blue screen saying I had trojan smitfraud.c located at (blah blah blah). I tried to fix this by going into safe mode and running the cc cleaner and other programs I read about on other forums.

When I load normal mode, it just sits at the XP Welcome screen frozen. In safe mode, I see my desktop but it seems ti freeze with an hour class only freezing at the start menu. When I move the mouse around the screen it is a normal arrow. My cpu usage is also at 100%.

Where to I go from here to remove smitfraud.c trojan???

Hey guys:

My aunt gave me her laptop to look at.  Unforturnately, I can't seem to look at much because it keeps freezing no matter what I attempt to do.  It gets to the Starting Windows screen with the Windows logo and then the hdd light turns off and it's frozen.  Same with Safe Mode.  The startup lines start scrolling by and then it freezes up.  I tried to let Windows Repair try to do its thing and that also freezes on a black screen.  Not sure what I can do besides reload the OS?

It's a Dell Inspiron 15 (1564) laptop running or should I say, "Not running" Windows 7 Home 64-bit.  4gb's of memory.

I am at a loss here.  Do you think it's time to reload the OS?

Hello Everyone

A problem occured 2 days ago, my computer froze and I had to shut down manually (pressing and holding the power button). After I logged in, a few seconds later (perhaps 20-30 seconds) my computer frozed up again. The mouse cursor doesn't move and I can't get any response from the keyboard. The desktop just remains idle and unresponsive.

Whenever I log into Safe Mode (I'm using that right now to make this topic), everything works normal, no freezing or anything.

I don't have any type of Windows XP CD, so I won't be able to reinstall my OS but I was wondering if anyone had any advice where I can troubleshoot this problem. I'm using a Dell Dimension 2400 (yeah I  know it's quite old) with Windows XP SP3. Back in June 2014; I had to get another motherboard cause the previous one died and the graphics card stopped working a few weeks afterwards. Is it possible that a hardware driver is broken or corrupted? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advice.

my specs are:

Dell Dimension 2400
Windows XP Pro SP3
Maxtor 6L040J2 40GB
Intel ® Pentium 4  3.06 Ghz
Cosair 1GB DDR 400Mhz (x2)
Intel ® 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

Since Speccy is having problems loading SPC.DLL, I'd reinstall it in Safe Mode (from a download to a flash drive), then run SFC.  Click Start and type CMD in the search box, then right-click CMD.EXE and click Run as administrator.  From the command prompt type sfc /scannow.  That will check for any corrupt system files and attempt to repair them.

Hello everyone,
My computer was working fine yesterday. This morning when I start it, it becomes unresponsive. The mouse works on the desktop, but nothing responds when I click them. I have restarted in safe mode, and everything seems to work. I looked under my system restore and all the restore points are gone. I ran MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware just yesterday and neither detected anything and I have not installed or downloaded within the last few days.
I have tried running error-checking on C: drive, but it fails to run when I restart. It says "Cannot open volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package." It then says to use system restore, which I cant because all points are missing. The only thing I have installed in the last week was Adobe Photoshop CS4.
I ran CCleaner yesterday as well and I think something of photoshop was flagged for cleaning, and I let it clean it... However, I restored the changes today using the CCleaner restore file to see if it fixed it, but no change.

I just tried opening Photoshop in Safe Mode and got a message saying that Liscensing for the product has stopped working and requires my computer to be restarted before it can be launched.....Error: 148:3
I suspect this might have something to do with the problem...but no Adobe program is set to run on startup....so I'm not sure why that would be bogging it down. I cannot check Task Manager during normal startup t... Read more

In Safe Mode you can call up MSCONFIG via Start/Run or WinKey-R, and see what's starting behind the scenes. Selectively turn off a few things at a time and see what happens. You can also go to installed updates in Control Panel/Programs and Features and sort by date to see what's new from MS.

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

What's the difference between Safe Boot and Normal?
I used sysconfig to turn off everything that wasn't running in Safe. Normal (selective) boot still bombs.
Context:
Computer is a used Optiplex. Came with Xp. I added w7 home premium 32 [a year ago] and w7 home premium 64 this summer. Been Stable in '64 for two months. That's 3 partitions total.
Subsequent to an acronis restore that failed, my W7 boots have been problematic. Xp works fine. But both w7 partitions will launch in Safe but yeild a blue red or green screen on "normal boot". Soon as I key in the password. I always assumed that some of the "Apperance" items in W7 drove my video card nuts. As soon as I used Norton 16 adjusted for "best performance" [ makes it look like classic windows with a square start box ] the problem went away.

Current strategy: Disable everything I can till it starts and then add services back in till I find the culprit.
Prior posts on "boots safe but" topic contain warnings as to age[1700 days..]. I've done system repair, boot fixes from neosmart, spotmau, and the partition activator. Since the data is "there" I believe this is a video conflict.

So if anyone knows how to do Selective Startup with only Safe Mode Components...I would like to know.
Could be I need a wiped disk and a scratch install, starting with W7 and adding the xp partition later.
Apologies if this post is in the wrong place.

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Hi sabotage,

From the look of it, I would suspect that it might have something to do with video card. Have you updated your video card driver? If you have updated and the problem persist, then try plugging your video card to another computer and see if it still gives you the same problem.

I think it might be a Mozillla issue (damaged), calling for the uninstall/reinstall routine.

I was browsing the internet the other day when I clicked on a link and my computer shut down. I immediately knew it was a bad link. My computer rebooted and it wouldn't let me on IE after that at all. I then did a restore to the previous day. I was about to get online so I went and downloaded Kaspersky IS and scanned my computer. My laptop messed up and rebooted itself. Then got Anti-Malware Bytes in Safe mode and ran a scan, still had issues Kaspersky not running right and my computer freezing after just a couple of minutes. Went back and did a restore again to the same spot and this time said forget Kaspersky and jsut did AMWB. It showed my computer is clean, yet about 2 minutes after booting, my computer reboots and the safe mode option pops up. I can run ok in safe mode but cannot get it to work in normal mode. I did trend micros housecall and another online scanner and all say my computer is clean. Yet, when I start IE, I am redirected on every link I click to scour..... or another site with links on it. Any help is greatly appreciated, as well as a recommendation for a better Anti-virus. I jsut had McAfree that came with this laptop. Thanks!

A:My Internet Works Really Slow In Normal Mode, In Safe Mode Works Normal

Chances are, you have Malware.  Programs that are using internet access that you can't see.  Run Malwarebytes, Hitman and AdWare cleaner.

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Try running Ewido online scan and post the results overhere.
