Keys on keyboard stop working

Q: Keys on keyboard stop working

For about 2 - 3 weeks now, some keys on my Lenovo Z50-70 laptop have stopped working. At first my left arrow, right arrow and home button would not work until I would press them multiple times and they would all simultaneously start working. They now don't work at all anymore no matter what I try. This is now starting to happen with the letter "E" on my keyboard and it frustrates me a lot. Here are some of the things I have done to try and solve: - connected an external keyboard (which works perfectly fine) - but I cannot use this at places such as university or work. - attempted to update keyboard drivers and reinstall them (did not work).- Ran virus scans with avira and malwarebytes. Malwarebytes found 200 PUPs - quarantining these fixed nothing.- Tried using the keys (arrow keys) in BIOS - they still did not work- Checked to see if I could update the BIOS - had the latest version. Any help would be massively appreciated, I really want to get this fixed.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

I have a user whose Tab key stopped working, but only on its own. That is to say, Ctrl-Tab, Shift-Tab, and Alt-Tab all still work. After swapping with a known-good keyboard, Ctrl doesn't work, and escape opens the start menu (which would indicate that ctrl is stuck down). After a second keyboard swap, with a keyboard that is known-good, tested, and absoutely pristine, he reports that the F key and Ctrl key sometimes do not work, along with a couple other keys.

No accessibility options are active, and the BIOS on all machines in this office are identical. What could possibly be going on here, and what can I do about it?

Are you receiving any errors in Device Manager?

To get to device manager, do the following:
Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager

Or

Type the following into the run dialog box (Located at: Start->Run)
devmgmt.msc

Let me know if there are any discrepancies.

Hi guys,

I am experiencing an annoying issue with Windows 10 and my Cherry keyboard (Cherry eVolution Stream Multimedia Keyboard G85-23000), especially with the multimedia keys.

Upon a boot / reboot all the multimedia keys are working without issues: mute, volume up/down, etc.
However sometimes it stops working completely (completely random). I have no idea what is causing it or how to solve it.

When they stop working I cannot get them back working at all anymore, other then rebooting my PC. Obviously this is not a solution, because I have to close everything I was working on.

While typing this, I tried to unplug and plug back in the keyboard. Apparently that solves it also. Though this is not a good solution, because the backside of my PC is not easily reached.

Cherry keyboard don't have drivers available, so that's not a solution. Also removing the HID keyboard thing from hardware devices and reinstall / refresh doesn't provide a solution.

Anyone else experiencing this? Or has a solution for this problem? Would be great, because I am very used to using the multimedia keys (especially the volume keys).

I am using the Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview version. Version 1511 (build 14257.1000).
Maybe it's an issue with the insider version, or something else. Or my hardware combination... I have no clue...

Thanks in advance.

A:Multimedia keys on keyboard stop working suddenly...

Well I still haven't resolved it. As a matter of fact; it's become worse.
As soon as I hit my volume keys (or a few times) they will get "stuck".

The only solution is a reboot or re-plugging my USB keyboard.

Hello, I purchased Cooler Master's Devastator gaming gear combo off amazon and received it yesterday. Randomly today the ASDF and JKL; keys (oddly enough the keys you were taught to put your fingers on in elementary school) stopped working. However, they sometimes do work, but then stop again... It does not seem to be a keyboard command or anything like that, the device is getting enough power for the backlight to work, this still occurs with the backlight off, I have restarted my PC, tried different Usb drives and deducted that it was just that keyboard(the one I'm using now is fine) and finally, there is nothing inside those keys.
I feel the problem must lie within the software of the keyboard as there looks like there is nothing wrong with it physically.
I have been googling this all day and have fund nothing even close to the problem I am having.
It would be a huge hassle try and get a refund and I was very happy with the product before this problem occurred. Any suggestions would be helpful.

A:Devastator Keyboard ASDF and JKL; keys randomly stop working

Since the old keyboard works it looks like a hardware fault so I would return it and ask for a new one or a refund.

For the 4th time, the T540 keyboard has about 7 of its keys stop working. The seven keys are usually on the right hand side and in a group, but could be in any row, and within 1 or 2 columns of each other. Pressing the key does nothing, not even the click in click mode. I am convinced this is not a software problem as I have tried all possible software remedies. I am sure it is due to the keyboard or connection itself. The Shift or Ctrl does not work for these keys either. First time this happened after a year of use, I lost 'P' and '0' among others, and I had to replace the keyboard. A year later on the new keyboard it happened again, but came back after two days. 3rd time was four months later, and I have lost '-', '=', '5', '6', delete, and others. I remapped these. Then again now I lost another bunch including '\', backspace, enter, and others. The original keyboard is a backlit keyboard FRU 04Y2387, ID# 48L16M, Parts # 0C44952, Model # KM BL-105US . Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

I had a problem with my laptop which is certain key on my keyboard is not functioning. The weird is, it happened without a reason. because after I shutdown doing my work when I turn it on again, I discovered my "s", "d", "g", "h", "\", "m", " left shift", "caps lock" and "~" key did not work at all. I try taking the key off, cleaning underneath, but nothing seems to be working. After that I try to use usb keyboard and it seems the key can be entered. So I thought my hardware is the problem. than I replace into the new one, but still having the same problem. I already waste my money buying new keyboard. Does any one happen to know what sort of problem this is and how I would go about fixing it? Is it related to the registry. My laptop is Acer aspire 4740G, ram 4GB, processor i3 2.4GHz. I hope someone can help me to solve this problem.

Alright. I've have this problem in almost every MS Windows operating system I've used (WIN31, WIN95, WIN98SE, WIN2000, WINXP) and I can't take it anymore! It's time to finally find the answer to this. Does anyone know why on one day, Windows shortcut keys (in a regular shortcut) I've set up work, then the next day (or maybe next reboot) do not? (It doesn't happen that often, maybe every 6 - 8 months or so, and it only seems to affect one or maybe two shortcuts at a time, not all of them.)

When I try to reassign a shortcut key to the shortcut that "lost" the shortcut key, it won't stick. For example, I'm trying to put CTRL + ALT + T into where it says "Shortcut key" (I've right-clicked on an existing shortcut to bring up this dialog box.) (Please see attached.) It was there last night and when I hit that key combination last night, the correct program came up and all was hunky dorey. This morning, I hit CTRL + ALT + T and nothing happened! And now it won't let me put that particular key combination back in (though it will let me put in any other combo, e.g., CTRL + ALT + S). And why do you think this happens at all?

I've run the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification for IE6 (rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet

Most likely it being controlled by a third party utility, which overrides the Windows setting.

To fix the problem you can use a third party Hotkey utility which will override it, such as Hotkeyd from PCmag, see: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,6319,00.asp

Keyboard and mouse stop working

Hi, I'm having some major problems with my Dell Dimension 8400 which runs on Windows XP.
It all started with some files found and replaced during chkdsk.
My PC was working fine yesterday, but today when I turned it on the problem started.
At first, everything is okay. Then, after the initial Windows page the screen goes black and a gray bar appears at the bottom. At this point, the keyboard and mouse shut off (lights go off) and stop working. Once the gray bar has finished loading (1-2 seconds), windows continues to start as usual. The only problem is when I get to the log in screen (where I have multiple user accounts) I cannot choose one to log on with because the keyboard and mouse do not work. I have tried unplugging them and putting them in the USB slot instead but to no avail. I cannot run safemode or anything because the same login screen comes up.
I tried hitting F12 initially and ran hard drive diagnostics which gave me the alarming result:
"Drive 0: ST3160023AS - FAIL - Return Code 7
Drive 2: No device"
Drive 4...my CD drive...diagnostics not supported
Drive 5...my DVD drive...diagnostics not supported

Any Suggestions? Please help!

Thanks in advance.

A:Keyboard and mouse stop working AND STOP 0X0000007B

Please follow the steps here for the Stop 0x0000007B error: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

As you will note, one cause can be a boot sector virus.

Return Code 7 can indicate hard drive failure. Drive 0 is the hard drive.

As for CHKDSK replacing files and causing this problem, it's not likely. Even IF you check both options- fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, it didn't 'cause' the problem, it just made it more evident.

Backup everything you do not want to lose and consider replacing the hard drive.

Hi all

Just an Idle question while sitting out in the Garden with a nice Breakfast (Old fashioned "Greasy English with Bacon, eggs, tomatoes etc etc" --absolutely Politically Incorrect and unhealthy but delicious) and scanning email with a Netbook (which I'm using to send this with ) when do you think the RC keys will stop working. ( I mean with what build as RC 7100 will of course continue until Mar 2010).

I'm surprised that they STILL work in the latest builds (even 7229).

As a side point will the BETA keys stop working when the Beta finally expires next month -- if it does I'd suggest anybody still using either the Beta or keys from the Beta download at least build 7100 with its keys.

Cheers all

My special function keys regularly stop working. For example, I often press the 2nd and 3rd function buttons to adjust the brightness of the display and nothing happens. In order to restore function, I need to open Toshiba System Settings/Function Key. I do not need to do anything further, not even the Apply or OK buttons. When I then close System Settings the special function keys work correctly again.

Whilst this work-around corrects things temporarily, I feel that I should not need to go through this procedure every time I use the computer. Does anyone know of a permanent solution, please?

In Destiny 2, most of my keyboard keys, such as WSAD, randomly stop working when I land in game.

However, when I start mashing them, it sometimes starts moving me in one direction and I can't stop, even when I disconnect my keyboard from the USB port. I found that I only have control when I hold the ALT or CTRL keys.

This is the ONLY game that I have this issue.

1) My USB controller works fine and I can play that way.
2) I've tabbed out to check my keyboard and it also works fine. (though sometimes Cortana search is wonky)
3) Restarting the game does not fix it. Restarting my PC does.
4) I am not using an anti-key logger
5) I've tried other keyboards.

Any ideas?

I have an unusual issue that I know others have had as well.  MySHIFT, Z, X, C, V, M, SPACE BAR, and COMMA keys do not work.  I've tried everything short of replacing the motherboard. I upgraded to the most recent BIOS (F.46).  Took the battery out and held down the power button for over a minute.  Plugged the AC adapter in as the computer first boots, performed a Factory Reset, replaced the Hard Drive.  Uninstalled and re-installed keyboard drivers.  I even replaced the keyboard with a new one only to have the same exact keys not work.  This seems to me as if it's a Firmware issue or a faulty motherboard that we the consumer shouldn't have to pay for to fix.  HP should have some sort of recall or something as I've read numerous posts of this same issue. Has anyone found a fix for this or had any luck with HP Support when their laptop is no longer under warranty?

A:keyboard some keys not working

Hi nirmit1105,
Check if the keys are stuck on keyboard. Another step you can try is to check the keyboard functionality in safe mode and see if it exhibits the same behavior there as well.

Restart the computer.
Tap the F8 key on the keyboard during the boot process until you see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen.
Select “Safe Mode with Networking” from the menu using the arrow keys on the keyboard and then press the <Enter> key.
Select the user account at the log in screen.
Try using your computer and see if the issue persists there.

In case of keyboard, you may also try using a USB keyboard and see if it works. If issue persists, remove the USB keyboard and use an Onscreen keyboard to see if the issue persists with that as well.

To use On screen keyboard:

Choose Start/Windows logo → Control Panel → Ease of Access → Ease of Access Center.
Click the Start On-Screen Keyboard button.
Test out the on-screen keyboard input in any application where you can enter text.
Click Options, select the Turn on numeric key pad check box, and then click OK.
Open a notepad and try typing on that by clicking on the keys of On screen keyboard.

Note: To use keystroke combinations (such as Ctrl+Z), click the first key (in this case, Ctrl) and then click the second key (Z). You don’t have to hold down the first key as you do with a regular keyboard.

If this is the laptop in your specs, your options are: get it replaced or a USB external keyboard (perhaps one of those rollable rubber keyboards).

All of a sudden, while iam composing an email on hotmail, certain keys of my desktop keyboard stopped working...i assumed that once i restart it the issue would be resolved. I was mistaken. I have restarted my desktop computer, unplugged the keyboard from the cpu and start my pc up again, however the same issues persists. Most keys are functioning on my keyboard, but certain keys give no response. My num pad is not working, and the num lock green light doesnt even light up when i push down on it. Now the problem is, i cant log into my desktop windows xp, mainly because my password contains a 7 in it. None of the keys work on the numpad, however a few numbers do work from the main keyboard component. I have no idea what to do. I tried pressing f8 to go into safe mood but nothing happens. Please help. Thank you

Sounds like it's time to buy a new keyboard! If you're determined to get this one to work you can try washing it with warm water, then let it sit for a couple days to dry out, and try it again, but if I were you I'd just eat the $10

Replace the keyboard -- if you need a part reference please supply the complete model number (i.e., Inspiron N5110, XPS L502x, etc. -- not just "Inspiron 15" or "XPS 13").

All function keys (1st row on keyboard), several number keys (6, 8, 9 on the 2nd row) and the left Shift key do not response;
I checked keyboard driver is updated, connection good;
I tried troubleshoot hardware and devices but problem not fixed, seems nothing detected
I tried System Restore, but the blue screen saying files and settings being restored stayed for an hour without an end, so I had to stop it

How can I fix this keyboard problem? It's a notebook using Windows 7.

Welcome chinwoman to the windows 7 forums.

Based on your trouble shooting so far, it looks like your notebook keyboard is toast.

there could be a single wire from your keyboard that has a loose connection or broken off.
My recommendation is to get it replaced. If your technically inclined, most laptops keyboards can be removed and the flat ribbon connection can be cleaned. I would try that if your comfortable with removing your keyboard, other than that, it looks like your going to have to take it to a repair shop which most likely will do the same thing, or replace it.

Hi,

I have an old laptop which I haven't used for a while, but want to start using it. However, the '1' and 'q' keys have stopped working. It hasn't taken a knock and I have removed the two keys, which were on a hinge, and could see no visable reason why they may have stoppped e.g. dirt (nothing more technical than that). The two keys when compressed do feel identical to the others, no signs of anything suck in there. Does anyone have any ideas? And if this type of thing is fixable?

Thanks

A:2 keys not working on keyboard?

Keyboards seem to drive their keys in diagonal rows. IE:
1qaz
2wsx
3edc, etc.

Since your 2 keys are consecutive in a diagonal row, we get the connection. The most suggested things are physically cleaning the membrane under the keys, and keyboard drivers. I have never owned a laptop, so I'm not sure you can just delete the keyboard driver, and let windows redetect. Or, just remove, and install the currect driver. Hopefully someone with laptop experience will be along with more info. A Guy

I have a Dell Inspiron 11 3000 series 2 in 1 laptop and recently (within the past few days), some of the keys on my keyboard are not working when I start up the laptop. After my laptop has been on for a few minutes, they seem to work fine but they still randomly stop working for a few seconds at a time. For instance, they are working just fine right now. The keys that do this are all close together on the keyboard (which I feel like that has something to do with it) and are listed below.

I should also point out that the keys are not broken or loose. I'm only guessing that this is a hardware problem and that it can be fixed if I have tools or something, but I'm not a tech wizard, so I don't know for sure.
Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Time for a keyboard? My keyboard "V" key quit. Kinda hard to cut & paste without the paste key.
PS replaced the keyboard with a "clacker" (mechanical keyboard) from Amazon.
PITA indeed.

Hi there.

Im using a saitek eclipse 2 keyboard and recently ive noticed that the following keys are no longer functioning: f8, f9, f10, f11, f12 and the print screen key. all other keys work fine as you can probably tell. i have no idea why this is happening. there are no drivers to install even on the saitek website because its a plug and play keyboard. This is really frustrating because i use those keys quite often in games.
My specs are:
Core 2 duo e6400
2gb ddr2 667
8600gt
Tagan 530w psu

Please help!

Hello,

Some of my keyboard keys aren't working (left shift key, left arrow key and a couple of others). I spilt water over the keyboard so this is what has caused it. Is there anything I can do to get these keys working again? Thanks.

BTW, its a Dell Quietkey keyboard (not USB)

Take apart & clean or simply purchase a new one, cheap enough these days !

Can you provide more detail? Are using a laptop or a desktop? Are the keys physically
damaged or did liquid spill on the keyboard?

Hey guys,

(Damn, Only I know how am I writing this post. It's so damn frustrating.)

Ok well here goes:

I was using a ps2 keyboard for a while now. But suddenly, certain keys stopped working.

I restarted, uninstalled the keyboard but to no avail.

I had a brand new usb keyboard lying with me, so I thought it's finally time to use it. But the same problem persisted though this time a different combination of keys not working.

I tried both the keyboard on a friend's PC and they both work like charm.

Now, I thought may be I should try windows repair, but I realized that the keyboard keys aren't even functioning in BIOS.

It's really irritating. I am having a feeling that this problem is mobo related (hence posting in this section).

I am currently using both keyboards to write this post, but yet there are few keys which aren't working on both. (so I actually have to copy/paste 'em from character map).

This whole thing is ridiculously painful. So please help.

Looking forward.

Thanks in advance!

I am using XP 64bit and XP pro (dual boot). Problem shows on both.

My mobo: Abit Ip35 pro

Is this a USB or PS2 type keyboard? Is your computer free from a virus or other malware infection?
