My super-fast internet is super-slow

Q: My super-fast internet is super-slow

We recently got 100Mb fibre optic broadband from Virgin Media, but it's been 2 days now and various speedtests report only 2-3Mbps. Other computers around the house get around 20Mbps (none have 100Mbps).

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron N5110, so it's not old, and I run both Linux and Windows 7 (dual boot) - neither OS gets more than 2-3Mbps. I've also tried moving to various spots around the house, to no avail.

I also tried downloading a large torrent (legal) with thousands of seeders to see how fast it would download, and it stuck at around 1Mbps, never any faster.

Why is this? If we're paying for 100Mbps, surely I should expect more than 3Mbps? Other computers on the same network get 10 times this so the issue is with my laptop?

Preferred Solution: My super-fast internet is super-slow

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I live in South Korea. The internet here is unbelievably fast. I've done 3 speed tests tonight, and the download speed averages between 20-40mbps, upload speed between 40-75mbps. However, when I try to watch streaming videos online, it's ridiculously slow. And it's not just one site. It seems to be all of them. Youtube, Comedy Central, BBC, and MSNBC have all been really slow. I notice it the most around 10:00-11:00pm here (only because that's when I come home from work), which is right at the same time most Americans are starting to go to work. Is it possible that the United States 9-5 workforce uses up so much bandwidth on their morning rounds through the internet that it could devastate my access to streaming video here?

A brief synopsis: The majority of videos I try loading require an obscenely long buffer time (upwards of 20 minutes for a 2 minute video). Not always, but usually. However, oftentimes YouTube will only buffer the first 20% or so of the video. So after I play it for a little bit, it inevitably catches up with the buffer and I have to wait again. Even video quality as low as 240p still sometimes takes an awfully long time to load.

Does anybody have any theories? I was able to watch the presidential debate earlier today live just fine (10am here, 7pm Denver time). Am I just trying to play videos at peak bandwidth times? Are there any ways around this? Could there be another explanation? This has been a rather consistent problem since I got i... Read more

Americans use the Internet non-stop round the clock, so that's not the probable reason. I think your ISP is throttling your speed for videos sites. You should contact your ISP and complain.

Ok, im having problems when i try to install Windows Xp pro. I been using it since it came and never had problems, but now after i decided to format my pc after been some time since my last format (also was acting kind of slugish), the typing cursor blinks super fast, the time clock on the desktop goes very fast too, each minutes goes as if it were seconds, when i do the ctrl+alt+del to see the cpu usage, its always at 100%, the light at the pc tower that shows when the hard disk is reading/writing blinks very fast, and if i try to double click an icon on the desktop nothing happens, the only way to open the icon or make it work is by right clicking on it. I even reformated hoping for the problem to be solved and still got the very same problem. I was forced to install a copy of Windows Me i happened to have on the mean time. Any ideas or any clue what could be wrong?

Just recently got rid of spyware from this computer. It was running just fine. I downloaded spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm on my system. Didn't seem to have any problems. I went out of town on Saturday and when I tried to use my computer on Sunday, it acted like it had crashed. I reset my monitor, first and a pop up floated on the screen that had something like no connection found. Then I rebooted my computer without any problems. No sign of the pop up that was floating around before. However, my internet connection browsers (IE & Mozilla) & Outlook Express have been extremely slow, sometimes taking over 5 minutes to load webpages. My email has sometimes stalled and had to start over again and I get 4 or 5 of the same email.
I uninstalled spyware guard, snoopfree, & zone alarm, hoping they were the cause of my slow internet connection. NO such luck. I called my service provider (cable connection) and they report there have been no problems with the connection in my area.
I am ready to pull my hair out..... I hope someone might be able to help me.

OK so I have 18GB of free space left on my C drive. I scanned my computer with superantispyware, malwarebytes, AVG Free Edition, and this online scanner http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ All came up clean except for 1-2 Ad-ware. I defragmented with Defraggler. I used CCleaner. I used Disk Clean. I deleted all movies/programs I dont need.It is still superslow. It wasn't as slow, but still slow, before I downloaded AVG Free Edition. Also, the CPU Usage flares up to 100% fairly often and then sometimes jumps down to 0-30%. The CPU Usage History graph shows flares all the way to the top for some time sometimes.

Hi all,

First post, looked around here first, got Speccy and filled in my specs - if you need more please say.

PC built and supplied by Quiet PC 18 months ago, always super fast and always started up super fast. Few days ago I thought I noticed it slow to boot up, but as I usually turn it on and then do something else I didn't think about it again. Last few days I've paid attention to the boot and it's taken way longer. Only changed I can remember recently were changing from Chrome to Firefox and there was a Windows Update - but I'm pretty sure it started before then.

Steps I've tried so far:
Deleted anything installed recently
Removed any programs causing errors in Event Viewer or fixed the problem (some of those removed: CCleaner, Firefox, all recent Adobe updates)
Disk Clean up, Defrag, Disk Check (the thing where you right click the HD and Check now...)
Appreciate any advice. Rest of the machine seems to be running ok, but I'm worried this is the start of something.

In case it helps I've just restarted and noted what happens.

What used to happen was Power button > brief Quiet PC screen > brief Windows logo > Desktop

What happens now is Power button > brief Quiet PC screen > brief Windows logo > black screen with the mouse pointer for about 60 seconds > Desktop

A:Super fast boot has become painfully slow

I would do the following.
Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a scan with malwarebytes
Run a scan with eset online
A negative from all 3 would be a good indication that it is not malware.

Run in safe mode. If you boot up satisfactorily.
Follow the clean boot procedure to solve your problem

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Intel core i7 5820k, 16GB quad channel ram, ssd drive for OS, 1TB drive for storage, 46Mbps (tested) internet speed, etc. etc. But my browser still responds slowly sometimes. One thought that occurs is is NSA hacking me because I'm not an Obama fan? I've tried other browsers and they all act the same. I've tried tweaking Firefox. Nothing has helped. HELP. Any ideas?

So then, I upgraded my internet plan to a 50M plan (at long last ><). I have a Dell xps 15z (Centrino N-6230 and Atheros AR8151 Gigabit switch). When i'm close to the router I get 50M download, 28M upload but when I'm further away my speeds drastically decrease to 11M whilst my upload remains at 28M, weird.

But that isn't the big problem. On LAN, my internet speeds are horribly wrong. I get a 28M upload which is good, but my download dips to 8M, max getting up to 12M. But if I use the same LAN cable on another computer, it gets a steady 50M down, 28M upload. It's been bothering me.

What could the cause be? >< I'm desperately trying to fix this! Could anyone help? Help would be amazingly appreciated!

A:Fast upload, super slow download?

1. Hmm... being close to the router gives you 50Mbps. (I'm guessing Wi-Fi?)
2. Connecting to LAN speeds are wrong (I'm guessing your connected to the router using the ethernet port?)
3. Other computer (Is that computer using the same router?)

I kind of want to say that your router is the problem. But also it could be that your computer is somehow lowering your internet speed. Any difference now?

Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

Hello, I am using a Dell XPS M1330. Recently I did a clean install of my OS (Vista 32-bit). Before the install my computer was running fast and drivers were all working and whatnot. But after the clean install I am plagued with problems. Specifically,

1. Computer Start-up takes ages, and while booting after the initial load screen there is a pause where there just shows the basic windows background with nothing on the screen (background is not my set desktop) for about 30 seconds before continuing to load windows and desktop.

2. After clean install my computer is right off the bat super super slow. Running even one program, such as the internet is difficult and the pages open super slow. Windows explorer files open so slow that I can see them open in slow motion, from top to bottom. Before the OS reinstallation this was not a problem and my computer could run many programs at once at high speeds as it is supposed to do. I have tried updating drivers which doesnt seem to help at all.

3. I have an NVIDIA 8400m gs Graphics card, but after the clean install I am not able to update the card to the latest drivers from the manufacturers website. The installation seems to be going fine until it fails randomly.

3. The M1330 is known to have overheating problems, so I use a program called I8kfanGUI to force the fan to high speed. But since the clean install, the program will not connect to the fan to speed it up. In fact, the fan doesn't seem to speed up at all even when the c... Read more

Thankyou for sorting out my Desk top. (From which I am writing this.)

Now, my office laptop has gone on strike. It is an HP Pavillion XP. I have already downloaded HihackThis and the Analyzer, to C:\ HJT, but I am not sure how to disable the 'system restore' to begin the log.

It was going slow before I took a short break, and yesterday, having taken an age to start up, it then kept sticking. At one point I timed it taking 3 mins to open the menu from 'Start' and then another 7 mins to open the 'Programme' menu!

I did an NAV Update- 3 times -as it would not install after downloading. So, I followed the Symantec site advice and downloaded the Intelligent Updater direct. Then I ran LiveUpdate again. I assumed the virus updates would be complete, but they ALL updated again. But, this time successfully. Then I did a scan, but all was OK. I noticed, however, that the laptop was working much better after this action, at least it IS working.

Recently, (before this) after failing to download SP2 on Dial-Up, the hard drive crashed. I took it to a 'PCDoctor' had the disk backed up, and they re-installed from the CD QuickRestore System Recovery, before re-installing from the backup copy. (In fact, I had to return it to be re-done as they had obviously used their own CD not my original one.)

I have just discovered from the above NAV scan that they copied all my old programme files to "C:/Esteban/... " along with a mess of other stuff (naturally, my important busi... Read more

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

OS: Vista is infamous for its constant annoyance to the user. This is somewhat unlikely, but it could be Vista slowing you down. I recommend upgrading to Win7 regardless.

Processor: The processor seems alright, so you're not having troubles there.

RAM: You may want to consider a RAM upgrade, as many applications (including games) do tend to stick around in memory until a restart. I'd have to say the lack of RAM is your issue. It shouldn't take much more, maybe another 1GB-2GB should fix it up.

Graphics: Nice graphics card, by the way. Beats mine ._.
AntiVirus: Well, the fact that you're careful on the Internet does NOT protect you from viruses. Not at all. I strongly recommend installing Avast! Also, I recommend installing MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and give your computer a nice scan with both of them.

Hi there,
I hope this forum will be my savior!
For a week now i have been struggling with slow internet that downloads at about 15 kb/s or less! Should be ten times that. I am running Vista with IE and Firefox - both equally slow.
At first I thought the problem related to windows updates but uninstalling them, and performing a system restore did not help. I ran Mcafee suite to look for a virus but found nothing. Nothing appears to be running in the background. I then cleaned out internet temp folders etc and defragmented my hard disk.
Since searching the net for a solution I have tried various things:
I switched off IVP6 and Mcafee phishing filter, uninstalled Norton and Mcafee virus scan and ran a netsh disable command. The option to rollback drivers is greyed out so I dont think a driver update is the issue. My only thoughts now are to replace Mcafee (though it has worked fine for me for a year), with antivir or similar, or revert to XP!
Anyone else got any ideas??? Sorry for the length of this post.....Any help will be much appreciated!!

Please do not request assistance for corporate/company owned computers. Many changes/deletions are made during the clean up process, some of which may involve uninstalling programs, deleting folders/files, changing settings and/or removing policies etc. As we have no way of knowing for sure if these are actually needed for company operations, malware issues in these cases should be handled by their own IT Departments in order to avoid any undesirable results. Hi All, helping my buddy out (or trying to at least). He's running windows XP. About a week ago, his internet connection became really slow. He is unable to even update Windows Security Essentials. I ran malwarebytes - updating that took almost an hour for a 6mb update. Plugging another PC into that connection works fine, so definitely something is up with his computer.
Also, when he has Outlook running, sometimes emails get stuck in his outbox, and he will have to restart his PC in order to get them sent out.
I've noticed when logging in using Logmein, that the connection drops quite frequently.
There are no popups that he's noticed.

Hi all, can anyone help, please ?

On initial start-up, Internet speed seems fine, but the longer my PC is on, the slower the Internet gets. All other programmes are absolutely fine, and running at normal speed.

I have now run virus-scans by 3 different parties, ie AVG, One-stop, and my own service provider, Blueyonder, and all are showing clean. I have run NoAdware, Ewido, and Spybot, which have also found nothing. I use CCleaner, 1-click, and ATF Cleaner and RegClean to clean things up every day, but still no better.

I have, by the way, Intel Pentium 4, with 512mb RAM, 2.8 ghz, running Windows XP Home, and I have a wireless internet connection (all connections checked and in order)

Any ideas please, would be greatly appreciated. Here is my HJT log:

I have just set up a new PC and am having some problems with my internet access. Basically, pages are loading so slowly that, for all but one page at a time, any others are timing and not loading any any graphics or images. Its driving me nuts!

I have tried running both firefox 1.5 and IE7 and get the same problem. I am running Firefox 1.07 on my old PC.

It is not the connection as I have reconnected my old pc and it is running fine - eg I can load a dozen or more pages simutaneously no probs.

I have tried tweaking the settings in FF but to no avail.

I have tried updating the drivers for the network adapters - on the mobo and a seperate one. They are up to date.

I tried turning all my security off - nortons, defender, xp firewall - but no difference.

I have tested my current bandwidth and the reading is:

58.80kbps = download speed of 7.35 KB/sec.

I know this isn't real fast but it hasn't been a problem in the past - now its as slow as dial-up!. I suspect it has something to do with the way I have things configured. Can anyone help?

Not sure if this applies to your problem or not but I installed IE7 and had real slow page openings. I uninstalled IE7 and everything is back to normal.

I have Verizon "regular" DSL right now and according to their website it is 21x fasterthan dial-up. However I see that they have a more powerful DSL that is 53x faster than dial-up. The cost is only $10.00 per month more for the second DSL that is over twice as fast.

Does anyone have the super powerful DSL through Verizon? ......I
s it worth it to upgrade?
And, what exactly is faster? If it is only downloads, then what I have now is plenty fast.

I'm just not sure if I should upgrade?

I am not sure if this is due to malware.

We have two computers hooked up to an internet connection. One computer is fine and one has a super slow internet. Downloading anything is near impossible and any complicated pages time out. The other processing on the computer does not seem extremely slow.

I also get constant messages saying "Local Area Connection - A network cable is unplugged". I replaced the network cable and that has not helped. The computer has not been acting strange other than that. I got this message even before the internet was acting very slow.

I had a previous malware infection which was resolved and has not recurred.

Hi, can someone help with this one? Thanks in advance!===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies unt... OK! I am running an old toshiba laptop with vista home premium service pak 2 and 2gigs of ram. I regularly use malware bytes pro, Ccleaner, combofix, and Eusing registry defrager. I have the OS setup for running audio recording software, and have never really had a computer problem that I cannot get fixed. over the last few weeks the computer is slow slow slow to react to mouse clicks and new windows opening, Google chrome takes tolong to load nay page, and things just hang for way to damn long. I have also started to get the blue screen of death far to often.

A:computer has become SUPER slow, and the internet as well

If you've run registry cleaners, you can expect the unexpected unfortunately.  They are snake oil.  They are totally unnecessary and can cause problems that're difficult to diagnose and very difficult to correct.  I think I'd back up any data I didn't want to lose, then restore to factory settings.

My PC in the last two days has become so slow when surfing the net that pages never even load. Sometimes I can bring up a page such as google after it loads for a while and other times I don't ever connect. I have no problems when hooking up my 2nd computer (laptop) to my DSL modem / hub, so I don't think it's my connection. I am currently using my laptop to post this message but can get nowhere using my desktop. I am wondering if I may have some type of virus since I just started having this problem 2 days ago. Here is a HJT log. I'm hoping someone can tell me if this is possibly a virus problem and if anything looks suspicious in the log.

Hello, this forum has been great in solving another problem I have had involving being hijacked to coolwwwsearch.com
I hope someone can help me with this one:
For about a week now my internet explorer has been unbelievebly slow. It takes about 30 sec to go from one page to the next. At first I thought that the web was slow or servers busy. Today I downloaded Netsape 7.1 to see if it would work better. It runs like a dream. I have a broadband connection. I just switched from McAffee to Norton and don't know if that has anything to do with my problems. I think that my IE is currupted somehow. I called Dell and they suggested uninstalling it and reinstalling it from a backup copy that sits on my computer somewhere. This did not change anything. I ran spybot and that did not come up with anything either. What do I do now?
Thanks in advance for any help, Volker

Hi there,

I recently bought a second hand laptop to replace mine that died. The replacement as detailed below was the some Ghz and slightly more Ramm but is starting to perform so much slower than my last.

When I bought it a few weeks ago it was working at speed but it really is slow now. From start up it takes approx 5-8 minutes to be in a state ready to load the internet. The internet itself then takes up to 2 minutes to open a browser. Also quite often when browsing it will say plugins have stopped. I'm using Firefox and never had these issues on my last laptop and also I have very few programs downloaded. I thought at one point it was my internet connection but my mobile runs perfectly on the internet.

Whilst the majority of my issues are using the internet the laptop itself is very sluggish opening programs. I have checked task manager and when the internet is running it seems to cosume all the Ramm even during just simple browsing.

I hope the above information and any help is gratefully appreciated.

It took about 1 minute to even load this window.... And here is what has happened:

Yesterday... i was just doing the normal things, i also downloaded the Opera 10.10 beta, loved it, defragged my computer. And shut down...

On restart(about 12 hrs frm last restart) I wanted to really download this new game that had come out, so i go on the internet, and i noticed some SUPER slow browsing, i thought it was because it was a beta... so i uninstalled Opera.

I then went into my Minefield broswer... It was also super slow - i thought it was because i had tweaked it inside of about:config, and uninstalled it, planning to reinstall it at a later time.

I then went into my Chrome Browser...
And it was also being SUPERRRRRRRRRRRRR laggy, and it being a Dev. Release version, i uninstalled it, planning on installing the stable version maybe later...

Then.. i go into Ie8.... Its also deathly slow... I go to mozilla.com ( takes like 2 and a half minutes to load it) and then try to download mozilla ff normal browser... it sais 1 hr remaining and it had a download speed of less than 30 kb/s... my connection is at 54mb/s...

I dont kno WHY so suddenly my internet got super slow(BTW its wireless) BUT my brother, has exact same laptop, though his isnt tweaked as much as mine, nor does he really do much crazy stuff to it, his internet is working fine.. and normally my computer is super speedy - jst like his...

So Im having a few major issues with my pc directly following a reformat.

Intel I-5 3.4 ghz processor
msi z77a thunderbolt motherbord
8 gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 660
asus pce-n15 11n wireless card

A couple different issues is making it difficult to figure out if these are issues with my computer/router/modem/comcast. First i cannot get a LAN connection. It says a network cable is unplugged in a 100% working ethernet cable. When going into device manager it shows there are no missing drivers. I did however use a driver genie and it listed several as not "up to date," but due to complications never updated them. Either way this leaves me with just my wireless internet. Although i hadnt been using wireless internet much before the reformat, it seemed to be running okay. Streaming Netflix through playstation would never buffer, etc.. I dont know if its coincidence or not but now its often difficult to stream netflix buffering over and over. dl speeds on computer usually ranging from 0kbps-100, then every so often shooting up to 700 or 800 kbps. This is the same internet a month ago i was downloading 2mbps+ on wireless. Seeming like its probably my modem or router, but maybe comcast too? How can I tell?

Thanks for all your help in advance!

For the past 4 weeks, my internet has been stupidly slow, and with slow I mean it feels like I'm browsing with dial-up.
I first noticed this in my computer, but when I told my roommates, they tought it was just my computer, because everything was fine with theirs. Two weeks later, they also started noticing. But the strange thing is: it is slower on my computer. At first I thought it was because I was browsing from the basement(house foundations and isolations could be and are interfering with my wifi signal), but today I took the pc upstairs, and I was right next to the router and google took like 30 seconds to open. I did the same on three other computers and it only took 5 seconds, still longervthan I would expect, but its way faster than mine. I've changed browsers and everything. I believe my drivers are updated, I've tried shutting down my firewall and antivirus, and that also didn't speed up the internet.

Other info: Steam registed a download speed of 700kb/s, which is way too fast. Opera registed a download speed of 500kb/s. The max I could get out of chrome was about 75kb/s. Sometimes it doesn't even connect to te internet, it detects the router, but isn't able to connect, for some stupid reason. I have cleaned up and defragged everything I can think of.
I'm using an ADSL wifi connection with a speed of 15mbits.
Netspeed registers 3, sometimes 6mbits/s, which are values you would expect if you're using wifi. Other computers register 8-9mbits/s.
