Taking Home PC to workplace for Maintenance

Q: Taking Home PC to workplace for Maintenance

I occasionally take my home pc into my work-place for updates and maintenance. I have personal info on my hard drive which I'd like to keep private.

Before taking my pc in, I'd like to know what measures I should take to safe-guard my personal info.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I live in a small house with a few others who are now all my good friends. Unfortunately, none of them knows anything about computers more complicated than Facebook, which leaves me to manage everything by myself.

I have a pretty nice setup going, and by pretty nice I mean it works
The only major downside is the time I spend keeping up on maintenance on all six or so machines in the house. While most people are content to just have everything autoupdate, I find that it slows all the computers down considerably, most notably immediately after start-up. I have been manually updating everything (Firefox, java, win7 updates, misc software, etc...) which is fine. But my problem comes when I have to do it on each machine. Repeating the same update six times or so is monotonous, and I start to lose track of which ones have gotten which updates.

What I would like to know is this: Is there a way to have it so that I only need to update one central location to update all six separate PCs?
All are running Windows 7 SP1, mix of laptops and desktops from different manufacturers.

A:maintenance on home networked PCs

It would involve setting up a server and turning your home into a domain, which would create far more work.

Honestly, the best option is simple education. If a person can't be bothered to run Windows Update and pay attention to system tray icons, then tell them you won't be responsible or available to fix their computers.

First off, I don't like vista and those poor souls that purchased a computer between the end of XP and the beginning of 7 I am sorry. Two of those souls belong to my parents who are constantly having issues of a slow computer, sticking screens, malware, long loads, etc. So my question is what are some simple software tools I can use to clean their computer and keep it in good maintenance whenever I get the call to go and looked at it.

I have them using NOD32 from eset, and I am going to take Antimalware with me on the trip. Anything else in general or special for vista?

A:What software Vista Maintenance and General Maintenance?

1) There is absolutely nothing wrong with Vista. It's a fine OS.
2) Nothing you should use to try to "clean" any system. A good av and either MalwareBytes or SuperAntiSpyware (and maybe SpywareBlaster) combined with smart computing is all you need.

OK, this is my first post and I will admit that I am a village idiot one biscuit short of a dozen so here goes.....

My laptop ( Windows XP ) is configured at work behind my firewall with a static IP address from my DNS router. It works fine and has access to the internet and my other networked computers which are NT, 98 etc.

I am adding a DSL at home and will have ANOTHER static IP there and want to simply take my laptop home to use WITHOUT messing up my work protocol which took me 3 days to figure out!

How can I establish 2 seperate locations, one for home, one for work that I can easily toggle as needed on the laptop. ( I know Mac's have a "location" setting but I don't know how to do this on my XP.)

Thanks - A - Million......rikbent

I'm pretty sure I seen in XP under network settings that you can actually input two different network configurations and choose between which one you want to use at any given time.

You might want to further investigate this.

When my 8.1 laptop lost time and I didn't understand why I looked in Control Panel/System Security/Action Centre and altho the Automatic Maintenance says No action needed the last run date is unknown and Windows was unable to determine the last date maintenance was run. If I try to Start Maintenance manually the laptop just gives a ding noise and nothing. When I changed maintenance settings that did not resolve it. I have gone into Troubleshooting but there are no issues, I have installed all the updates and I have run all the diagnostic tools. I am at a loss as to why the Automatic Maintenance is not working and whether that is the reason my laptop lost a few minutes in time. I should add that on my other laptop the Automatic Maintenance is working because it gives the last run date. Anyone give me any help please.

I wanted to know if you could tell me on a computer that has been running windows xp pro and was set up for working on a network at a company. How do you take all the networking stuff off of it so you can just use it for dialup for a home computer. A friend got his mom and dad a used computer that had been used by a company (don't know what company or what it was used for) But his folks are just going to use it for home use and are putting a modem in it for dialup cause they can't afford DSL. So how do you take the network stuff out so it doesn't come up or bother them? Or will it bother them and would it need to be taken out ?

Hi Folks,

When I start my computer, whether it is plugged into the internet or not, an instance of the svchost.exe service starts sucking up all of my CPU within about 2 minutes of booting up.

I discovered this by pulling up my task manager after quickly logging on. Note that if I boot up, wait the 2 minutes before trying to log on, my system hangs. It seems to hang within 2 minutes of booting up windows, regardless of whether I am logged on or not. If I do log in and watch the Performance tab on the task manager, the CPU usage starts gradually climbing until it is completely maxed out. I then checked the Processes tab, and see that it is one of the svchost.exe processes that is the culprit.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot / fix this?

Thanks kindly!

Hiya.

OK, I want to connect to my small business network from my home computer. I have read the support articles on microsoft.com, but they confuse me, and sometimes use terms I'm not familiar with (all of the acronyms just waste me! ).

I have high-speed cable and a D-Link router at each location. My home network (dhcp from ISP) has one hard-wired (XP Home), and two wireless units (XP Home and ME). My workplace network (static address from ISP) has one wired (XP Pro), and 4 wireless units (3 x XP Home and 1 ME). All XP machines are SP2.

I could list the things I have done and tried, but I think it would be easier if someone would just take me by the hand and lead me through what I have to do, step by step. It's my understanding that as long as one of the work 'puters is XP Pro, I should be able to do this. I believe I have to set the routers to access the internal networks as well.

OK, I can create the connection from my home unit through Settings/Control Panel/Network Connections, name it, and save it. What now?

I really appreciate the help.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Bit. I just began using it. It came loaded on an older NOS HP G60 Series Notebook I recently purchased. I had Windows XP 32 Bit on my older system, and was a fan of Auslogics Disk Defrag Free. I liked it's speed and it's optimization strategy. At their site, it says it's only compatible with Vista 32. I've been digging around forums and the web but it's still not clear who's got a compatible Defrag... I don't want to wreck my file system or anything like that. Hi - from a new Win7 user used to XP...

I use Remote Web workplace to connect to my work Windows 2003 Server. When I'm in Full screen mode of being connected to a work desktop, Alt-Tab cycles through my local apps instead of the apps on the remote desktop. I know that RDC has an option to change this in the Local Resources tab. I wasn't sure if RWW used the same settings or had similar settings of its own. I think that when using XP, Alt-Tab cycles through the remote's apps and so I didn't know if there was a way to make Win7 do the same.

CWG - Did you ever find a solution to your problem of Alt-Tab cycling through local apps instead of the apps on the remote desktop? I use RWW to connect to my work machine from my home HP laptop, and the Alt-Tab function does not work. If I login with my Asus laptop via RWW, Alt-Tab does work. I've tested on other laptops, the problem appears to be with HP.

I use Remote Web Workplace from my house to check my work email. On my XP machine everything is great. On the new Vista Home Premium machine everything works except I CAN NOT compose emails.

You can reply or create a new email, but the text area always has a red X in the corner. It will usually says something like "click this control to active". In Vista the text area is not responsive.

Any ideas? Email is kind of pointless, if you can't reply or create new ones. Also, there are no prompts to download Active X controls or any other prompts to allow anything. It is just an unresponsive red X.

Thanks

Ok, so I just messed up really really bad. On my dad's work laptop, theres a domain for the workplace which he signs into. Today I wanted to share a file between that laptop and my desktop, because I had no flashdrives or anything to copy it on. I searched a bit on how to do it and someone had posted on a site that both computers should have the same workplace. So, without really knowing what the hell I was doing, I changed the workplace on my dad's work laptop. Now thats the big problem, he won't be able to login and i dont know what to do. I've read that you need to login as a Local Admin now. My Dad is asleep right now and when he'll go to work he'll find this problem. I don't think theres anything I can do to fix this, but if there is a way, please tell me

Also, once he knows of the problem, will it be easy to fix it? Will the tech guys at the office easily be able to get him back into the domain? I hope its a quick process or I am screwed

Have a Dell Inspiron (2014) with Windows 8.1.  Left it on last night.  Came in this morning and it wouldn't wake up.  Had to powerdown and upon restart it booted normally, but when the desktop came up I got a popup in the bottome left corner of the screen saying there was a drive-error and that the computer needed to be shutdown so it could run a disk repair.  Tried, but it was already locked up.  I did ctrl/alt/delete and chose restart.  Upon restart, the computer went through a length disk repair.  I step out of the office for a moment while it processed and came back and there was a pop up that had this error:

Realtek HD Audio Background Process for Vista: RAVBg64.exe - A....(rest unreadable)
-The instruction at 0x40028e28 referenced memory at 0x00000000.  The memory could not be read.
-Click on OK to terminate the program
-Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

I tried both options.  Both make the pop up disappear but give me nothing more than a black screen in permanent lock.  I have to press the power button to completely shutdown, let it rest and then restart.  I have only tried twice, don't want to cause anymore damage, the popup is currently up right now.

Any help would be great.  Thanks!

Hi,

We have workplace join for windows 7 machines. As windows 7 registers per Device and per User whenever a new user tries to logon to the PC we get the error ?You
cannot get there?..? message and the only way for us to get this PC working is by running the below commands first to leave and join again and it works after that.

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft
Workplace Join\AutoWorkplace.exe /leave

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Workplace Join\AutoWorkplace.exe /Join

We can include this in the scheduled task but that means everytime a user logs into the pc it does the /leave and  /join which is not the efficient way of getting this to work.

What i was looking for is if there is any way that i can have this on GPO Preference or script  to check during logon if the user has a profile on the pc,if so it just runs the scheduled task /join.

If a user logs onto the pc for the first time i.e new profile then the scheduled task for /leave and /join should run in sequence.Could you please let me know the solution/script for this so that i would like to test and implement this.

Hi everyone. Was wondering if you could assist. At work I've been using a specific LAN number to access the Internet. Today the IT administrator has changed the LAN to default and removed the Connections tab under Internet Explorer so that I cannot change the LAN number, at least not via the usual route of Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.

My question basically is there any other way to change the LAN settings Proxy Server number other than the "Connections" tab, either by way of going into the registery or the Administrative Tools or even in DOS. Is this possible or is there some way of getting the Connections tab back, or if I brought in an updated Internet Explorer and downloaded it again at work would I be able to change it?

Any and all help is very much appreciated, thank you very much!!

Is this normal for the windows update? I want to be able to work on my pad as I work on my screen without dragging the items there and then having them stuck there once I close the program. I did download all the drivers and the HP assistant after the windows 10 update but it still just doesn't work the same. Can anyone help with me out with this, super frustrating!

Hi there @Alipera?Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that after upgrading to Windows 10, your Sprout is not working as it did before. Please post the full product number and original operating system in use on your Sprout. See the following, if you need help with that information. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? Is the Windows Version on My Computer 32-bit or 64-bit? I checked on the Sprout support page and there was a release on 27-September for the  Sprout Workspace UpdateIt may be newer than what you installed. The notes for the update are: Version 1.4.0.4310 Rev.A   Fix and enhancements- Sprout Workspace 1.3 introduces the 3D Capture experience, a 3D scanning solution available with the 3D Capture Stage accessory.- Sprout Workspace 1.4 provides important optimizations and performance improvements to the 3D Capture experience.- Adds support for running non-Sprout applications on the mat.- Improves navigation experience. Let me know if it helps.

Hello,
First of all this is all in Windows XP Pro. I just recently came from college back to home and I was seeking to change from the college Domain to my home network in order to transfer large files. So i went through My Computer's Properties and Computer Name then I changed from domain to workgroup. I didnt restart right away because I first joined the network my home computers were on, but when I did Finnally restart it asked me for my login info like it regularly used to and then gives me the error:

The System could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type the password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.
I suspect this is because it is still trying to log me into the domain, but I can't find any way to change this. I searched all through bios and fouind nothing. I also tried to start in any kind of safe mode and it still asks me to log in and I can't get into windows. If anyone had any ideas I would completely appreciate it.

Hi I dont know a ton about computers and I just got a brand new Samsung Laptop for work. I dont know a ton about windows 8 either im fairly new to it. I work at a mental hospital doing security and we are allowed to have a laptop for over night shifts. I have an Alfa wireless antenna (cause i get low signal where im stationed) along with my normal laptop Wifi.

Heres the story. I was using my laptop antenna then out of no where it said "Identified Network (no internet access)" then my internet just stopped. I had this happen on my old laptop and it lasted a few days then worked like normal again. Then i switched to mt usb antenna and it worked fine for about 20 mins then all of a sudden it went it "Identified Network (no internet access)". So I was stuck with no internet. I tried looking up fixes on my ipod and i tried 3 Ways To Fix The Unidentified Network Error in Windows 8 and it didnt work I tried How To Fix Unidentified Network Windows - YouTube and it didn't work either. I'm dying here cause I have to sit in a room for 12 hours tonight with no way to keep my self from falling asleep or entertained.

If someone could help me I would love you forever haha. My laptop works fine at home just cant get it going at work. Thank you in advance.

Hi, I hope you nice folks might be able to help me out. My friend is trying to establish a remote connection to his machine at work and we are having some trouble.

The server is running Server 2000.

My friend's machine is running the following:
Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit Edition)
IE 9

He and I both have the same set-up but I am able to connect and he is not. We can both log onto the Small Business Remote Web Workplace website but the problem occurs when selecting a machine from the list and clicking "connect." I get a dialogue box warning me about the connection, I click ok and then it connects to the machine. He does not get the dialogue box and the connection doesn't occur...he doesn't get an error message either. Therefore, the problem is not on the server end...it's with my friend's machine.

We have verified all settings are the same in the internet options, disabled any add-ons that might have a pop-up blocker setting, ensured that the pop-up blocker was turned off in Internet Options, tried both editions of IE (64-bit & 32-bit), turned off his firewall to see if that was causing the problem and uninstalled an old unused version of McAfee. The only security software currently installed is Microsoft Security Essentials. Is there something else we can do here?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi, so I work for this place that has no or minimum firewall protection and all the workers seem to be getting viruses and new computers all the time.

One question is, why do I and all workers have each others computer networks (we can all click on a computer and access all their user folders (Excel files, Word Files, Pictures, Desktop...)? and what harm can that cause?

Working from anywhere at any time is increasingly the new standard and companies worldwide are modernizing their technology to thrive in this environment. To support this transition, we at Fujitsu partnered with Microsoft to build devices that are highly mobile, flexible and secure. For a behind-the-scenes look, please watch ?Enabling the Modern Workplace?.**
There are many reasons for companies to modernize their technology and embrace the remote workstyle. Here are my top 3: long-term cost savings, increased employee productivity, and a competitive recruiting edge.

More than just enabling remote access, technology modernization includes providing the most secure environment to protect your employees, company, and customers.

Modern Security
Per Microsoft Advanced Threat Analytics*, over 60% of security attacks stem from compromised user credentials. To minimize this very real security concern, Microsoft developed Windows Hello facial and fingerprint recognition and Fujitsu has brought to market another biometric option, palm vein authentication. PalmSecure, the technology behind palm vein authentication, maps the veins under your skin to confirm identity. Already used by companies and organizations around the world, including Banco Bradesco and Lotte Card, palm vein technology is designed to provide access protection for devices and prevent compromised credentials.

How do Windows Hello and palm vein authentication work?

Hi all,

So, I have scoured every resource I could find to resolve this, and am just flat out stumped....hoping someone here can shed some light on my problem. Here is my situation:

* I have a SBS 2003 R2 Standard machine running (domain controller, exchange, etc)
* I have 7 XP SP2 clients that are part of the domain
* I have an ASA 5505 firewall running, with an ADSL modem connected to that for WAN access

My problem is related to RWW. From the internet (non-lan connection), I can connect without any issues to the RWW homepage (either as a domain user or an administrator). When I click on "connect to work computer", I am presented with a list of the domain PCs. However, once I click on any of them, I receive the following "VB Script: Remote Desktop Disconnected" error window:

"The client could not establish a connection to the remote computer. The most likely causes for this error are:

1) Remote connections might not be established at the remote computer
2) The max number of connections might be exceded at the remote computer
3) A network error might have occurred while establishing the connection
4) The Remote Web Workplace designated port might be blocked by a firewall
"

Here is what I have confirmed so far:
1) I have opened ports 3389 and 4125 on the ASA
2) I CAN remote desktop directly to the SBS itself (not using RWW)
3) I CAN access OWA via the internet
3) The client computer has been setup to allow remote connections, and I have adde... Read more

I'm having problems with a pop-up balloon giving me a security alert and requesting for me to click. Clicking on it brings up an anti-virus page in I.E. Also, my homepage is set as http://myblock.hrblock.com/ but I am taken to http://esafetylist.com/ instead. And I just noticed that there is a new toolbar on my I.E. called the "Protection Bar". This toolbar won't go away when I attempt to uncheck it.
After browsing through the forums, I kinda figured you would need the HiJack This! log, so I've got that below. Any help will be greatly appreciated because, as I stated before, this is happening on a computer at work, so I'm not sure if it happened due to something that I did, or someone else here at the office.
Thanks again,
_chaz

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Dear all,
Here are my PC specs -

1. Windows 7 Ultimate - 64 bit
2. 8GB Ram
3. 2 Sata Hard Disks of 80 GB and 320 GB (both of which are relatively empty)
4. Radeon HD Graphics Card
5. Antivirus - Microsoft Security Essentials
6. Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-A75M-UD2H
7. CPU - AMD A8-3850 (2.9 GHZ)

Off late, my PC takes way too long to start any application. At times, even if I click on a folder, it doesn't open and finally the PC gives me the 'Wait or Close' option.

Even while switching off the PC, it takes a long time.

I clean my PC regularly and run scans from time to time. The PC doesn't show any virus or malware as of now.

Any suggestions what I can do? I assembled it not more than 2 years ago and it's started behaving like this off late.

Also, at times my 320 GB hard disk doesn't show up under my computer. I have to open my cabinet and tighten the SATA and Power cable and then it shows up again.

Any help will be appreciated.

Tell us the details of how you "clean my PC". What do you do exactly and how often?

Have you checked running processes or services through Task Manager when it seems to be slow?

The drive issue may be the cause. Have you tried another cable or connecting the hard drive to another port?
