I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Here is the issue, when my computer goes to sleep after it's on for a while when I move the mouse to get the screen back up it shows the backround no icons or anything to click.
Same if I turn it off and turn it back on. I have to turn it off and on many times then go to safe mode and shut down then turn it on again for it to work. Just now I had to turn it on/off 4 times for it to show the icons and task bar. Usually it is left blank with nothing to click having no choice but to turn it off.
Norton says no viruses.

Hello squirrels and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think I'd start out by trying to do a startup repair. It's been suggested that the startup repair be done 3 times (regardless of what the notifications say) and the computer rebooted after each repair.

Hi Joy

Your computer is likely having serious errors occur, which cause it to reboot. We'll need to change a setting so that it won't automatically reboot when it has such a serious error, but will instead show you an error message that can help you identify the source of the problem.

Disable Automatic Restart
1) Click on the Windows-7 Start button
2) Click on the Control Panel item on the menu to the right.
3) If your Control Panel view is set to Category: click on the System and Security item. [If your Control Panel view is set to Large Icons or Small Icons, go right on to step 4].
4) Click on the System icon.
5) Click on the Advanced System Settings in the left-hand menu.
6) In the Startup and Recovery section, click on Settings.
7) In the System Failure section, uncheck the checkbox next to Automatically Restart.
8) Click OK to save the change.
9) Click OK to exit the System Properties window.
10) You can now exit the Control Panel.

From now on, you'll see error messages rather than instantly restarting. Whenever you see such error messages, be sure to copy them down: they can help identify what's wrong.

But for the moment, we'll move on to a quick-fix try - using System Restore.

Windows System-Restore:
1) Start your computer in Safe Mode
---a) As your computer is powering on, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard: this should produce the Safe Mode boot menu.
---b) Choose Safe Mode from the list (it will b... Read more

I had a BSOD this morning and afterward my screen is way too dark. I tried adjusting the settings in my Nvidia control panel and on my monitor, but that didnt work. This has happened to me once before, but I never did find a solution and somehow it fixed itself. However, my screen is dark again. If anyone has a solution or a way to prevent this from happening please let me know.
Also, could it have anything to do with my graphics card? I've only had my computer for 3 or 4 months.
One more thing I wanted to add, when I watch a movie on my computer (with brightness in the nvidia settings turned up) the movie is very very bright, but everything else is extremely dark.

Thank you very much Provost David PK. Your solution to my shutdown problem worked. But there's one more problem that persists. When the display turns off the screen still appears dark. Touching the mouse pad or pressing any key turns display on normally. But when the display has been off with the appearance of the dark screen for a longer time (45mins or more), touching the mouse pad or any key doesn't turn display on again. All I'm able to do is to put machine off by the switch button and putting it on again. And with the solution you gave for the shutdown it worked. But turning Fast Start-up back on brings back the shutdown problem so I didn't turn that on.with that, I've no shutdown problem.Any help with this?Thank you

My screen is not bright any more. The blue is dark and the white is grey and not white. I have a Pavilion laptop.

A:Dark screen

It's almost certainly a hardware issue so I have moved you to the hardware forum.

The symptoms are those of a dying screen.

What have you done by way of adjusting the settings to compensate for it? Have you maxed out the brightness control using the keyboard interface?

Depending on your "display card", it may offer some further options, such as adjusting the display "gamma" control if there is one.

Right click on the desktop, select Properties > Settings > Advanced -- and see what options you have on the configuration panel for the display card.

You may have to poke around on the various tabs to find configuration controls such as gamma.

Any Ideas? I am at a loss.

A:Screen goes dark with CD ROM, CD, VCD

Any form of CD? You mean if you put a music CD in the drive, your screen goes blank?

If you put a data CD in there and don't click on it, the screen blanks out? Does it happen as soon as you access the drive, or is it when the drive door closes?

Do you have an external monitor, or are you just using the built in LCD?

It sounds like the lights are shot in it.You might want to take it somewhere and find out what exactly is wrong and go from there.Working on a computer screen can be quite a job if you have never done it before. You can also try borrowing another monitor to see if it works on that.If its still dark you might have to replace the whole screen.

I have a W10 Lenovo Z500 laptop which has just gone very dark - you can just about read the screen but it's hard and makes it pretty unusable. This did happen once before and the Lenovo guys did something and sent it back but I have no record of what they did (a helpful Lenovo mgr did say he thought they reinstalled the device driver, but doing that has achieved nothing).

Steps so far:

Pressed the brightness up/down buttons of course - nada! (In fact I can see the slider moving up and down but the brightness is not changing at all)
Gone into a recovery directory and found the NVIDIA drivers and setup.exe and run that - install went well but no difference.
Found the NVIDIA driver in "devices" and updated and reinstalled - nada
Found the NVIDIA console and done the same through that
I notice in the device manager there are two devices listed under Display Adaptors - Intel HD Graphics 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M - both "working properly" and at the latest level. I have uninstalled and re-installed the Intel driver two - wasn't expecting to see two - not sure if that is a problem.

It does not feel like a hardware issue as the screen would probably stop altogether if there was a cable fault.
Any brilliant ideas?

I wonder if anyone can help me. The other week i was running my laptop of the battery and when the battery ran out it just turned itself off.

When i plugged in the adapter and re booted my screen was quite dark. I can still use the lap top, hence why i have been using it with the dark screen, but i now want to watch DVDs on it and the colour isn't very good.

It's difficult to explain, it's like the colours have lost thier brightness.

I have tried going into the power options and changing it to all the different power options and i have also tried adjusting the brightness of the screen using the lap top keys that adjust brightness. I have tried troubleshooting it in windows, but i can't find anything helpful, The only info i can find is below

Display Dims When Laptop Is Unplugged from AC Power Source

This article was previously published under Q307442
When you unplug your portable computer from an AC power source so your computer is only using battery power, the display may dim.

This behavior can occur when Windows XP dims the display to reduce power consumption and improve battery life. Note that this only occurs if your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) supports the alteration of the display brightness level when you are using battery power, and your computer is in Advanced Configuration Power Interface (ACPI) mode.

This behavior is by design.

A:Dark Screen

I don't think the symptoms you are describing can be attributed to the OS changes the article describes. The article refers to a feature in Windows that is desinged to increase the battery life of your laptop by auto reduicing the brightness level whenever you unplug the laptop. If this were the cause of the problem as soon as you plug the laptop into a power outlet the screen should return to normal brightness.

What you are describing sounds to me like it may possibly be a hardware problem. I am only speculating that part of the backlight for the laptop may have failed. It is hard to say for sure without seeing it.

Sometimes when I start the computer the screen is darker than the cursor. I have two monitors and only the Acer does this, turning the monitor off and back on does not help but re-booting usually does.

If you bought the notebook this recent- it is possible it may still be covered under warranty.

You may have a power supply issue - is your computer running on batteries?

You have a video cable (internal) that is loose.

Other possibilities include you may have set it on power save mode. Screens will dim to save battery power.

Not sure if anyone here can help with this. I have an IMB Thinkpad 600. I'm not very technically savvy, so I have no idea how to solve this problem. Lately, if I'm away from my computer for a bit, instead of going to screen saver, the screen will just go dark, and I cannot get it to light back up again. Moving the mouse, hitting any keys, do nothing. When I say it goes dark, I mean it goes black, as if its going to screen saver mode, but it will not come back on again. Sometimes I can get it to light back up by hitting F7, tho it's never been set for another display.
Anyone have any suggestions or ideas why this may be happening?

Hi everyone, I have an Acer Aspire 5735 and suddenly today the screen went black without any warning. I wasnt using it at the time and think it had been on for a while. I restarted it and did a system repair but the screen was still the same.

On closer inspection I can make out the windows in the background and I used a separate monitor to use the computer (that is how i am writing this now). Ive tried manually adjusting the brightness with the hotkeys and also gone through the battery management settings but neither have made any difference?

Ive heard backlights can go, are they expensive to replace? Is that a likely cause. surely when the light goes it goes completely dark?

A:Laptop screen has gone very dark!

Backlights and the inverters that drive them can go bad. The inverter is usually a separate printed circuit board mounted in the laptop lid with a two wire cable going to the LCD module. There is no quick and easy way to tell if the inverter or the backlight is bad, short of substituting known good ones.

Your backlight is most likely a long and narrow glass fluorescent tube inside the LCD panel. Replacing it may require very gentle dis-assembly and reassembly of the panel without damaging the many electrical connections to the display glass. Some people end up replacing the the whole LCD panel. You may be able to find a new panel on line for under $100 USD. You would need to know the full model number of the Aspire 5735 in order to find the correct replacement.

Replacing the inverter will usually require opening up the laptop's lid bezel and disconnecting a couple of cables and popping out the old one. You may be able to find a new inverter on line for under $20 USD.

There are other things that are needed to operate the backlight, such as some control electronics on the motherboard that can go bad as well. There was one person here that had a laptop that would show the initial BIOS splash screen but would go dark as soon as Windows started up. Turned out that the switch that detects if the lid is closed was stuck in the lid closed position.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525, running Vista home premium 32 bit. I've had this laptop for about 3 years, and for the past month or two, the screen will at times go blank (for instance, if the laptop has been unplugged), yet the laptop itself remains on. The problem is sometimes I can't get the screen to come back on, even though the laptop is still on and running. The only thing I seem to be able to do to get the screen back is to turn off the laptop by pushing and holding down the power button, forcing a shutdown. When I reboot, I get a message saying that Windows did not shut down properly, and have the option of entering safe mode or starting Windows normally. I select start Windows normally, and everything seems to be more or less OK, until sooner or later this same screen issue happens again of course. Any idea what's going on here and how to correct it? I took the inverter out and was surprised that the screen was dark but I was able to see the same with a large light on it. I thought it would be completely black. My question is this: Does this mean it is the backlight and not the inverter? The backlight is much cheaper but it looks like you have to solder it. The inverter is about $59.00 but easy to put in.

A:notebook screen too dark

It sounds like a backlight problem to me, I'm not 100% on that though. And welcome to TSG.
