Lenovo x230 battery drains quickly in sleep mode; power management center won't run

Q: Lenovo x230 battery drains quickly in sleep mode; power management center won't run

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned. Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode. At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops. Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I got a Lenovo 320S a few days ago and started it up plugged in. Unfortunately at 100% it says it only has like 2 hours and 15 minutes remaining. It goes through the first 20% pretty quickly but then it slows down and goes up to 4 hours or so. I just left it there for a few minutes or so at 33% and it went down to 5%. Is the battery still stuck in Ship Mode? It's supposed to last for 7 hours. I don't think I can remove the battery and I have already tried an apparent solution where you press the power button for 90 seconds with the PC turned off and then you plug it in again. That does not solve the problem. I'll need to be carrying this PC around so it's pretty urgent.

I have a HP Pavilion X2 Product Number F5W70UA#ABA. I have been having trouble since I bought this just a few short months ago. The battery drains within an hour or 2 whenever I put the machine to sleep (close the lid, put in sleep mode, etc.). I have updated the BIOS and all the latest drivers. It helped ensure I could wake up the machine, but the battery keeps draining and I am at my wits end. I have also gone through many forum postings on this issue and have run the HP Battery Test as well as checked all the power management settings and they appear to be set up properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - Jim

Hi DontLoveWindows, From the information that you have given me, it is showing that you have 2 anti-virus softwares installed. Avast and Norton, that are continuously running when the printer is in sleep mode, which would be draining your power. It also shows that your printer has missing or misconfigured drivers which could be using power as well. Here is an HP Photosmart Full Feature Software and Drivers download for your printer. I suggest that you Disable your startup software. To do this: Right click or touch and hold the bottom left corner of the screen and select Run.Type msconfig in the Run box, and then press Enter. The MSconfig window opens. If the User Account Control window opens with the message, Windows needs your permission to continue, click or tap Continue to close the window. If Normal Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Select Selective Startup, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box.Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Click or tap Disable All.If Selective Startup is currently selected, follow these steps:Click or tap the Services tab, and then select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box at the bottom of the screen.Make a list of the items that are selected. You will need this list to reset your computer startup items later.Click or tap Disable All.Click or tap Apply.Click or tap OK. A new window displays.Click or tap Res... Read more

Hi everyone,
I have encountered the problem that when my XPS13 is on sleep mode during the night, in the morning the battery is 10-15% or totally dead. I normally leave it at 100% or 80% so that's a lot of battery life lost. With hibernate mode on, the battery does not drain, however, I am not a fan of hibernate mode as it shortens the lifetime of the SSD and takes a longer time to start up. Normally, I don't leave any high-performance apps open during the night, it's normally only Firefox, Skype, and Word that are left open in sleep mode. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
Cheers

Hi, I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 (Intel Core i7-6560U 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10) and have been experiencing the following issue since I purchased it: I put the laptop in sleep mode and into my laptop bag. The laptop will wake up by itself later despite the lid is closed. It then stays on as it's inside the laptop bag it gets very hot and drains the battery. Since this has happened closer to 10 times already I'm worried if the battery life is already damaged due to heating. Normally when I close the lid the laptop goes onto sleep mode.  I have already taken many measures to try and stop it from waking up from this article (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/stop-windows-computer-randomly-waking/). I have set the power setting so that it should always go on sleep mode when the lid is closed. I don't understand how it goes on even when the lid is closed.  What could be the problem? Thanks in advance!

I have a Lenovo X1 6th Gen. Ever since I had to reinstall windows (after an seemingly unrelated issue where I had to have the motherboard and battery replaced), my computer battery drains significantly when in sleep mode (30-70% overnight). Calling Lenovo tech support was a waste of time; they said to update the bios (which only fixes a security issue for processors) and put in a new battery (even though the battery is nearly new and in Good health). I already did all of the standard checks, to make sure sleep mode is activated, there are no waketimers, etc., all of which looks normal. I discovered the "powercfg /sleepstudy" tool, the results of which I have attached (converted to a PDF with the relevant sections expanded). This confirms the massive battery draining overnight. It shows the Top Offenders as the USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller (\_SB.PCI0.XHC), then specifically says USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) then Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R). Maybe this means my USB Hub and/or Bluetooth are turning on throughout the night even though it is supposed to be in sleep mode? I do have bluetooth on as I use a bluetooth mouse when I'm plugged in. I just updated my bluetooth driver to see if that helps, though the USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) already has the most recent driver. I'll also try disabling bluetooth before putting it to sleep, however even if that solves it that's not a great fix since I'd have to turn it on and off every day. While testing these, please let me know if... Read more

A:Battery life drains quickly!

Most likely your battery might not bre charging fully due to the A/C adaptor plug may be loose and or the connection on your board is loose (common problem with laptops). Another thought is that over a period of time laptop batteries get weaker due to their nature. It may be best to take your computer to the shop and let an expert technician look into this. Really doesn't cost an awful lot...If you are handy you may be able to check this out yourself but sometimes laptop cases are a little difficult to open (without damaging)...I know from experience (cracked my Sony Vaio case when trying to attempt fixing the very same issue)...

I have the same problem with my Lenovo T510 and my new P70.   I setted the sleep mode and hibernate mode to "never" in the Power Management and even use : Performance setting and my P70 always go the sleep mode after 4-5 minutes if the computer is idle. I was able to avoid the problem with my T510 by pausing a video.  That avoid the computer to do in sleep mode (yes the workaround is stupid.. but it works). But that stupid workaround doesn't work with the P70.  If I let my computer without touching it, it will go in sleep mode.  Don't download anything while going to the bathroom. PS.  I have Windows 10 on both my computers. I asked the same question on Microsoft Windows 10 forums and got an answer that reset all the setting to the default value, but that didn't fix the issue.  And now that I have the same problems with two lenovo laptop, I'm not sure that the problem is only with Windows and more with Lenovo drivers.

Hello,
I have the Dell XPS 13, i5, with the Win 10 OS (64 bit) - just got it not long ago.
When I put the laptop on Sleep Mode (Either if I close the lid, or if I do it from the "Start Menu" and choose the "Sleep" option), the Laptop goes to sleep, and then wakes up immediately (after 2-3 seconds) with no apparent reason. If I immediately try to make it "sleep" again, it wakes up again after 2-3 seconds. It is like it refuses to sleep. The only way to fix it, is to restart the laptop, which sometimes fixes the problem, only until it happens again - and I notice too late when my battery is empty.
It deprives me of relying on the Sleep Mode, which is really 50% of the user experience on a SSD laptop.
How can I fix this?

Thank you

I recently purchased an x230 and everything is perfect but the battery fit.  It moves up and down slightly.  I know there are many posts in the lenovo forums for all different models that the battery fits lose in "x" model and solutions of putting paper / foam / tape to make the battery fit tighter.   What I'm wondering is if anyone has actually had the problem fixed by lenovo.  I've read a few posts where a user has had the base piece of the case replaced (where the battery fit's into) and that has solved the problem.  I'm still within my return period on my x230 and am awaiting a call back from tech support to see if there is anything they will do but I don't think I will keep it if they can't fix it.   I'm just curious has anyone actually had luck by replacing the base piece.  From what i've read a replacement battery hasn't worked for anyone.  Also, I know everyone says its by design for thermal purposes but I haven't actually seen any official confirmation of this from lenovo.   Thanks.

A:Battery Loose / Battery wiggle in x230 and LENOVO ...

As a follow up, I'm just curious if this is a widespread issue?  Anyone have loose battery in their x230 / x220?  I'm not talking about it falling out...but just a few millimeters of wiggle room.  Basically when i pick mine up or place it down, I can feel / hear the battery move.  I'm just trying to get an idea if this is a real problem or thats just how every thinkpad is.  I called support and they are sending someone to replace the base panel and we'll see if that fixes it.  I'll update this post when it get's replaced.   Edit* I also asked the lenovo support rep if they had heard of this issue and they said no, never.  I don't see how this is possible as if you do a google search for thinkpad loose battery there are many results.

Dear, I found some strange issue with my Lenovo ThinkPad X230 on Windows 10. When i've attached the battery, I try to shutdown, hibernate and sleep the labtop but the laptop didnt shutdown or hibernate properly. The screen is turn off, the WIFI symbol still bright, the power button light still blink and the fan still spining. i need to force shutdown by pressing the power button for 10 sec to turn everything off. On the other hand, if i take the battery off, pluged the power cord, everything will work fine. I can shutdown, hibernate and sleep. I used Lenovo Service Bridge to scan and install the lastest version of every driver. I also flashed the BIOS to lastest version. Unfotunately, the problem still persists.

I have saved a T60p, a T61 and a W510 from scrapping, partly replaced battery, CPU, RAM and changed to a SSD and successfully installed Windows 10 x64 version 1709 onto them. As least the T61 and W510 are now quite useful. Then I remembered that Thinkpads did have a Power Manager for Windows 7, and found that for Windows 10 Lenovo Vantage from the Windows Store seems to be the best option. Unfortunately, since installing Vantage, after hibernating Windows 10, the battery drains about 20% over 24 hours, and I have not found any explanation for that.Interestingly, the battery does not drain after hibernating when:o) I remove and reinsert the battery for a few secondso) power on, booting into Ubuntu and doing a shutdowno) I do a shutdown instead of hibernatingI really would like use Vantage to define a charging threshold from about 40% to 80% to enhance the life of the (new) batteries, but the described significant draining during hibernation is unacceptable. Does anyone know a solution for this problem (3 different laptops experience the same problem, even when just installing Windows 1709 and Vantage)? Thanks a lot!

Hi, maiki

Yes, there is a sleep button. Depending on the behavior of your Fn keys, then you will either press Fn + F4 or simply F4 to put the machine to sleep. I would try to create a new power plan and have the same settings to see if you can get the proper power button behavior.

Hope it helps,

Hey all,

I'm having a little challenge for you guys I quess. It might not be that difficult, but I don't know if it is possible. Here's my situation: I've got a laptop (Acer) and when I close the screen, by default the laptop goes in to sleep mode which is a good thing. Now I'm using my laptop also as a mediastreaming device (dlna) to my blu-ray player. Now I would like to have for example a shortcut to prevent windows going in to sleep mode when I close the screen while streaming content to the blu-ray player. This to prevent that the laptop stops streaming when I close the screen. I would like to have this setting optional, so when I don't stream content to the blu-ray player, the laptop does go in to sleepmode when I close the screen. Is there a way to make this happen? By means of two shortcuts for example? 1 to prevent sleepmode and 1 to restore sleepmode to default?

I hope someone knows a way!

Kind regards,

Asterix058

A:Quickly change sleep mode

Hello Asterix,

As a workaround for this, you could setup two different power plans for this. Have one (ex: High Performance) set how you like when you use the computer normally, and the other (ex: Balanced) set to use for how you like when you are streaming.

Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below to create shortcuts to use to be able to easily toggle between using these power plans for this.

Hope this helps,

I recently bought a new battery to replace my old one, which was old and draining rather fast. However, this new battery only shows slight improvement. Are there any sorts of drivers I could install or anything I could do to fix my battery? My battery lasts for about 1-2 hours when I do everything i can to conserve battery. Sometimes, it drains 1% or 2% in less than a minute, which adds up quickly and kills my laptop fairly quickly. If anyone could help me, it would mean so much to me.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and I tried searching my problem but I couldn't find anything so I decided to post to get some quick help. I had my x230 and never had problem with this for a long time.  Recently I decided to purchase a 9cell battery 44++.  Given the oppurtunity of being in singapore I went around to find a geniune lenovo 44++ battery for my x230. So I got this 44++ with fru 45n1029 put it on my laptop put the ac and boot the machine.  Then I went to the power manager and notice that it still says 45n1023  tried to reinstall my power manager but still says the same 45n1023. I wanted to know if there something wrong or how to I make power manager recognize my new battery? Is my battery geniune?  I'm attaching an image below of the new battery I hope someone can shed some light about my concern.  http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc158/sceptile_ray/Computer%20parts/20140623_203911.jpg and here is the information about the battery that power management shows:

Hi,The Power Manager settings as well as the battery parameters are stored in the registry. So if PM could be removed at all (!) those parameters should be reset. But I hope it's not a single solution.I'm not sure will it help or no, but you might perform the following steps:- PM menu (mouse right click on the battery icon), "Remove and Replace Battery" item,- battery reset. Also let me give you another advice: change the battery charge thresholds for its healthy and lifespan, do not charge it fully.

Anyone have a fix for the x1 carbon laptop going to sleep mode very quickly (1-2 minutes) while using a lenovo docking station?  It doesnt happen when i use the laptop without dock.  Ive tried all the normal setting in windows.  they are set to 15-20 minutes.  It still happens.  Ive updated the drivers for the docking station.  It still happens.  This is also an issue with an employee's 4th generation X1 and a USB-C dock.  After waiting for 25 minutes on lenovo chat and no one responding, i called in.  They spent 30 minutes playing with the same settings then said it was a software issue and transfered me to another department.  They tried to charge me $200 to fix the problem.  My laptop and dock are less than 6 months old.  I'm extremly upset with lenovo!

Gets even better. I called back into the original number and they said "what i do with my computer is not their problem. Since it works (even though briefly) then its fine"

Got a Lenovo Yoga just a couple days ago.  I have been using it with a browser open, with medium brightness, and it is lasting me about 3-4 hours on battery.   This laptop in the specs says it should last up to 11 hours, which I imagine this workload should bring me up to.  My previous Lenovo Y510p lasted this long, but thats how long it was stated to last, and that was after 4 years.  Does anybody else have this issue?

I noticed how quickly the battery capacity is lost. With the purchase of a laptop, the battery capacity was 90 Wh. Each cycle of charging and discharging (even when the cycle is 1/2 or 1/4) - there is a loss of 0.5 - 1 Wh.For example, there were 88 Wh. Does just one cycle of discharge and charging and the full capacity of the battery becomes 87- 87.5 Wh.Is it a battery fault or did Lenovo use so low-quality rechargeable batteries ?!

Hello! All of the sudden my Lenovo stopped turning on. After plugging in the adapter the battery icon at the back flashes green a few times then turns off. Also, around 10-15second after plugging in the adapter power button reacts to me pressing it ( green led light while I press it) but after that time it stops reacting to anything. It won't turn on either. Please, if anyone has any ideas let me know I've also tried all the suggestions posted in other threads

I saw few people have problem with this, It was **bleep** hard for me to find what was wrong with my laptop, It just lost its power (instant power-off) from time to time, It was like that for like a half a year, I couldn't figure what was wrong with it. It was totally clean inside and wasn't overheating ,ran all the tests- all was fine, battery also was fine, so is power supply and power module. The thing that fixed it- Was Changing CPU thermal compound, it had dried out really bad and was causing this gremlin.. Even though I didn't believe that it could be the problem because it didn't had overheating issues. Spent $1 on the compound from ebay and the laptop has been fine for over 2months now.In case anyone has the same problem or comes up when searching this post- that's the thing that will fix it even if it sounds weird.

I have a strange issue. I have a Lenovo T60 laptop and I am experiencing problems with the power management/power guage.

It will often show the battery not installed (power gauge is a greyish-white color with dashed lines) or it shows a red X. It does not matter if I am on AC power or on Battery power, it will show the full range of power, battery level, not installed, or an error.

I have searched Lenovo's site and I seem to remember seeing an FAQ about this, but now that I need it, I cannot find it.

What can I check or do to stop this? While it is annoying, I am not sure if I am having a battery problem or not. I did check my battery on Lenovo's site to see if it was recalled and it is not.

I do appreciate any help that any one can give me.

Thanks!

hi Reichtofer,

Thanks for Posting!

Try opening Control Panel / Uninstall a program and uninstall the Lenovo Energy Management / Power Management Software,
   Restart the system if prompted.

Now download and install this
     Lenovo Power Management Driver

If  after the installation you were able to see a shortcut icon on your desktop,
try navigating Crogram Files or Program Files x86
now look for Lenovo Folder and It shouldbe located there.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Yes, indeed the famous sleep problem that everyone seems to still have.

I have searched high and low for other users with the same problem as I do and did not get anywhere. I have a HP Pavillion M7750N for those who care to know with only one addition to it being a M-Audio Delta 44 sound card for Sound recording purposes.

My problem is that when the computer goes on sleep mode (S3) it hangs untill it finaly reboots and brings up an error in windows. In other words I can never have the computer in sleep mode or hibernation for that matter.

Since I did not find any information to help in this process I started to look deeper to the problem and I found a temporary solution. I followed Step 8 in the terrific instruction bellow:

Power Options and Sleep Mode Problems

Doing so I caught that HD Audio Control Panel (RtHDVCpl.exe) was preventing my PC to go into sleep mode.

Now I can go in sleep mode but I lost the ability to control my sound input/output that I kinda liked with Realtek. I tried to uninstall Realtek HD Audio Manager and install the latest version but with no better results.

Reason for this post is one for anyone to use in case disabling Realtek HD Audio Control Panel can do the trick to fix your problem. And second, to request help or comments to fix mine.

Sorry about the lenght of my storry. Great Forum by the way!

After upgrading Vista 64 Ult to Windows 7 RC1 I was surprised to find I had to setup my XBox360 connection again because the connection (yes, it was wired) was VERY flakey and during that process 7 told me it was going to modify my Power Management settings.  I naturally assumed it would set the machine to do everything except SLEEP or HIBERNATE.  Apparently that was wrong, the machine went to sleep and did not wake up to record shows or when the XBox tried to connect to it... very annoying.I have corrected the power mgt settings and I THINK all is well.  This worked perfectly under Vista... it should have been seemless under 7.sadf
