Dead G505 can't start it up

Q: Dead G505 can't start it up

I bought a G505 w/AMD E1 a couple of months ago, upgraded to windows 8.1 and have been using it daily, pretty good little budget laptop. Everything was fine until yesterday, when I got done, I closed the lid, laptop went to sleep like usual. Tried to wake it up this morning, nothing. Early on it had the pwr LED on as well as the LED for battery, it turns on when AC adapter is plugged in now, but nothing else.I've unplugged it, removed the battery, waited, tried pushing pwr button 10 time and then holding for 30 seconds, and everything in between more time than I care to admit, but this thing is a brick.I really need to get into it, I've downloaded about 3 hrs of a family vacation that I need to edit for my wife's grandma that is terminal with cancer, and she's devastated because I cannot get into the laptop. Please let me know if I need to get it serviced, or there's a way to bring it back to life, thanx! OH! And I tried the one button push to restore to factory, no luck there either....

Preferred Solution: Dead G505 can't start it up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi lrosello

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Things you can try:

1. Remove AC and Battery then hold the power button down for 10sec, Connect only the AC adapter and see if that works.

2. Try checking RAM maybe if you have two module troubleshoot 1 first by using it in two ports on the system.

3. try removing the harddrive and see if it will show any difference when powered on.

You can check this guide for reference on parts removal.

I have a Lenovo G505 that recently appears to have died and I can't get it to start up.  I initially thought it was a bad AC adapter and replaced that, but even with a new adapter I don't get any response from the laptop. I tried removing the battery, removing the power plug, and holding the power button for 20 seconds.  Nothing changed.  I tried removing the battery altogether and powering it on (thinking that it might be able to run only on AC power) but that didn't work, either. I don't get any sort of power indicators anywhere - no LED lights, no sounds of it booting, no BIOS, nothing.  It's like it's not getting any power at all.  No matter how long it's hooked to the AC adapter, I press the power button and nothing happens. Is there any further advice or anything to try, or should I just call it dead and start looking for a replacement?

Nothing happens if I hit WinX, and if I right click START cursor moves up and right a bit but nothing happens. Right click an icon, very poor response, yet shellexview shows nothing odd. Had separate issue - couldn't log into to other IDs, fixed that by copying clean DEFAULT from other Win 10 PC. I've done everything I can find, the DISM stuff, the reinstallation of 'window' apps. This appears to be a common problem. It used to work fine some weeks ago, don't know exactly when this started.

System is a laptop with 16gb ram, I7, HP with hybrid graphics, build 10586 / 1511 up to date HOME.

I got a compaq presario from my friend its dead and I have no idea of its history, anyway it will not start, I have taken it apart and cleaned alot of dust out of it, and I tried the drivers on my pc and they seem to come on, none of the fans work and there seems to be no power past the power supply, I have changed plugs and did alot of stuff I have have seen on this forum other peoples questions, there is no off and on switch on the power supply, and no lights lit on the mother board, but the power supply has a light and it blinks, off and on, but I can unplug the harness from the mother board and then the light is solid, so I do not know if there is a problem with the mother board or the power supply, and I also tried shorting the switch in front of the tower, I took the cover off the power supply and looked inside to check for burned places and did not see any, or any where else in the pc, I did find a piece of play dough in the three and half disk, like I said I do not know what this pc has been through, its only one year old so I thought it may be worth saving,

I recently tried a new system wiper and it completely disabled my start menu. In other words, it removed all my shortcuts and will not allow me
to pin anything to the start menu which is now just a blank space. Any
program I start no longer places an icon there, nor can I drag anything
there through the start button. When I do, it just disappears.

In addition, the right click context menu command pin to start menu
has also gone away. I am annoyed and baffled.

it's allover performance is as expected some how, but the start up is very slow. Worth mentionning that it came with Dos-OS which made it affordable to me but i'm starting to feel that it was a mistake.
Another thing is that i partitioned it by the os dvd and both partions are primary.
i installed 2 versions of win7 the 1st is SP1 then the present i found on the internet and the uploader says it's an untouched original that came with his new DELL and it seems nice till now but the start up problem still the same with the new win7 installed.

Bought a refurbished aspire E 15 start (ES1-512-C5YM) Via ebay with a 1 years warranty, The laptop was for my wife but its had no use at all, if its been used for 10 hours, that will be the limit. I recenty tried to switch it on and nothing, I plugged in the charger and the blue light comes on the charger but no charging light on the laptop. Checked the internet and it tells me to hold a pin in the battery hole for 30 seconds without the power cable and nothing, I have also tried holding the power button while holding in the pin in the battery hole and nothing. I dont think that the company will honour the warranty because i bought the Laptop on the 14th September 2015 but i did not recive the laptop till the 21st September 2015 (Today is the 19th Sept 2016) Since the Laptop had not been used for 4 months, We thought that it had lost its charge, or possible it was over charged when we last used it. Anyways , Any help would be great. Malc

I have a family member's Dell e1505 that is over 2 yrs old (purchased 8/06) and out of warranty. No problems with it up until now. They went to turn it on yesterday and couldn't get anything.

Source of power doesn't matter (battery, wall, or both). I hit the power button, power light comes on for 3-4 seconds and then goes off. Nothing else happens. There are not sounds whatsoever coming from the laptop.

I removed the hard drive, and memory just to see if it would change anything and it didn't. I only was able to run across one thread online where someone had the exact same problem. Wasn't much help though as they didn't offer any advice on finding the problem.

I'm suspecting the worse...dead mobo. Any ideas? Anyway to test this? I'm fully capable of working on the laptop, but don't really know what to do. I can't get to a boot menu or anything so I'm lost.

Any help would be appreciated

PS. Haven't had a lot of luck with computers lately it seems like. First my power supply in my desktop went out a couple weeks ago. Last week, my hard drive in MY e1505 finally went out (after months of clicking), and now this problem. This one is by far the worst...I'm hoping it's not the mobo.

Really, I just have a question, but it's kind of hard to ask without a bit of an explanation.Basically, before I fell asleep last night, my laptop worked fine. I can't remember the battery life, but I'm pretty sure it was at least half full. When I tried to get on my computer this afternoon, it wouldn't turn on. I assumed it was just dead, so I plugged the charger into it and tried to turn it on again. It wouldn't come up. The power button light came on, along with the charger light, but the screen just stayed black. Those lights stayed on for a few seconds, but immediately shut back off.I looked through a few articles and, being one of those people, automatically assumed that my laptop was done for. I did try a recommended test though. As soon as I clicked the power button, I clicked F2. That didn't do anything, so I tried again a few minutes later, but accidentally clicked F1, which brought up my laptop info and the option to click "escape" to continue with start up.FINALLY, it came up and everything was completely fine. I logged in, I started up Chrome, everything was completely perfect. However, my battery life was at 3%.So, my question. Can a laptop literally be so dead that it doesn't even start up? I've had issues with this laptop before, so it wouldn't surprise me if this is a universal HP issue, but I'm really, really curious as to what happened with my laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop model 1764 that will not boot to windows. The error code given is 4400:011A. I do not hear the hard drive spin so I'm thinking it's dead. I received two disks when I purchased the computer and I'm wondering if These 2 disks (reinstallation of operating system & drivers & utilities) will put the computer back as original with a new hard drive. I know I've lost all programs on the computer but I don't have anything on it that can't be replaced by disk or transfered from the one I'm using now. Also, the present drive is a 500 GB with 5400RPM. Can I get a 500GB with 7200RPM. I know the 7200 uses more power but I rarely use this laptop on just battery anyhow. If I do, it's for less than an hour.
Thanks in advance to anyone with more knowledge than me.
Dave

A:No start up-dead Hard Drive?

Yes those disks will put your machine "back as original". A much much better way would be a clean install though. Here's how to do that if you haven't before. We have many excellent tutorials here at the forums, written by some very knowledgeable people. Just click on the link : Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

And yes, I would go for the fastest spinner I could get/afford if not an ssd. There's many 500GB 7200 HDD's out there so shop and compare. Here's a sample page from TigerDirect, they seem to be running around $60.00 USD. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...nal+hard+drive

Hello all, long time browser of this site but first time poster. I will try to be as detailed as possible but please ask for more if needed as I'll probably leave important ones out. Thank you for any help!
Basically, I am running a Dell XPS420 on Windows Vista and cannot get it to start properly. For the past month or so it has been acting strangely. Basically anytime it's reset, I have to go through a Dell Pre Boot System Assessment Build 4507. It would run through some diagnostics and then start properly. This always worried me but it always came back on properly. I have also been hearing strange, loud grinding noises from it for at least a month or two. I never thought much of them though as sometimes computer's are loud. Now it will not start properly at all though and I suspect it could be a hard drive failure? Yesterday morning I tried putting a new CD in it and opening iTunes which became unresponsive. I tried logging off and logging back on which usually fixes that problem, but the process of logging off was taking incredibly long, so I (and this was probably a mistake) just powered it off.

Now when I start it I get "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause". It then prompts me to either start Startup Repair, or start Windows normally, which brings me back to the same screen.
I have tried Startup Repair and am told it cannot be repaired automatically. I have tried booting from the las... Read more

The laptop is a Gateway NV5207u, about 2.5 years old.

It worked fine, no superloud fans or anything, but I came home from work, opened it up, and it won't start.

I press power, and the blue power light comes on, I hear the fans start to kick on, but after a couple seconds it stops. During this point, I get NO output to the screen, no startup beep, nothing. After the fans stop, the power light stays on, but nothing else.

WHAT I'VE DONE:
removed the battery and all cables, held in power for 60 seconds to reset the unit
removed and tested with only one of the RAM sticks (tried with each, just to rule out a bad memstick)
disassembled down to the mainboard, blew out the fan (was not very dirty though, so I don't believe there was a heat issue). rebuilt and reseated all connections.

Finally, I checked Google, there is apparently a design flaw with a bad power cable/switch in this model, however, I bypassed the switch entirely and just shorted out the power connectors on the board itself... the unit DOES power on, but behaves the same.

Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions, or is my fear (dead mobo) the most likely problem?

Hi, Just thought I would post this out of desperation. Here is my situation. I build my first computer two days ago. It worked, it ran for seven hours or so. Then the next day it randomly shut off so I thought it might have been due to the heatsink fan not being properly installed. So I reattached the heatsink and place everything back together. Now it will not even start, no fans going on any peice of equipment. It will not boot up period. The motherboard lights come on but thats it.

These are the things I have tried.

1. I Bought a new power supply to see if mine was an issue. It would still not boot up.
2. I have made sure all the cables were plugged in correctly.
3. I tried booting up with nothing attached but the heatsink and cpu and still a no go.
4. I was going to try removing the battery on the motherboard when i got home and reattaching that.
5. Did my cpu burn up because my fan wasn't on correctly? I think it would at least boot up if it was..
6. If the motherboard is dead, I can exchange it. I just want to make sure I have done everything I could to figure out why it will not start.

Not sure if anyone could give me assistance but it would be great if anyone could help me.

Do you also use voice communication in game ? Or outside like with ventrilo ? I am wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Hey All,

I'm new to the forums so I thought I'd start off with this little situation I'm having. My desktop (self built within the last year) suddenly just stopped working about 2 months ago. One day it was fine and the next absolutely nothing happened when I hit the power button. Having gone through this type of situation before I knew that troubleshooting it would take forever and just have been way to busy in the past 2 months to devote sufficient time to it and have been using my laptop ever since. Today I got bored, however, and decided to figure out what was wrong with the desktop. Here's what I've discovered thus far:

-Power supply seems fine...I hooked it up to another self-built barebones and it started everything up

-Power LED on mobo (Asus p4p800 SE) lights up when I plug the PSU into the wall so there is at least some connection between the PSU and the mobo

-The power switch from the front panel of the case seems to work fine b/c I plugged it into the mobo of the other computer that I tested the power on and it powered that one up perfectly

-After close inspection I don't see any shorts anywhere that would indicate burnout

-Haven't ever moved cpu...so it shouldn't be the cause...and even without one the fans connected to the mobo should at least start when i turn the computer on

Basically, I hit the power button and there is absolutely no response whatsoever...not even an attempt at powerup...its as if ... Read more

A:G505 - Power port

Hi Darrenj,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can have the Power System Checkout done on your machine as directed here on the hardware manual (page 21). Having isolated that the ac charger is working ok and yet there is no LED status indicator that would turn on then you can review the disassembly of the cover to check for probable loose DC in port as it may also be as simple as loose contact or if needs replacement of the IO board and cable.

If you need specific tools then consider having your local service center check on it.

Update us how it goes for you.

i bought this Lenovo G505 about a year and a half ago and for the most part i love it, it does everything i need it to do within reason. but i have had one nagging problem with it the whole time and up until today i blamed it on different size sticks and memory speeds, but today I bought brand new corsair select DDR3L 1600mhz memory 2x8gb (16gb). sadly the problem still exists.it seems that no matter what stick of ram is in the second slot, that while the bios recognizes the total, and windows claims to recognize the total, the second stick is not USABLE memory. please view the photo to see exactly what i am referring to. I have tried a multitude of different operating systems (win 7,8,8.1,10, countless linux distros) all give me the same problem. I would REALLY like to know how to fix this problem as currently having 16gb of memory and only 7.45 usable is heartbreaking...

A:Lenovo G505 RAM Confusion

Hi  3razar3,Can you check if windows is using the half of the memory as hardware reserve? To check this open up Resource Monitor from Taskmanager. If you see that your missing memory is being reserved  for hardware do the following steps. Open msconfig - > click on Boot - > Advanced options - > untick maximum memory, restart the system. Hope this helps. Cheers,

A friend has a Lenovo G505 which suddenly developed a weird issue. I new it was booting by using an external monitor but laptop screen was blank. Having tried everything including One key restore to original settings, updating bios to v2.04 from Lenovo site and also booting from a Knoppix (linux) usb stick, the blank laptop screen persisted.Eventually, I discovered the only way to get correct boot so that laptop screen display is visible (including Lenovo splash screen, and incidentally, the webcam to be recognised correctly in device manager) is to press power on button and immediately close the laptop lid and reopen it. I am convinced the bios/uefi needs the laptop lid to be closed to detect that the screen is available for display. This makes me think the 'laptop lid swich' may be involved somehow. I know there is a small magnet at the top  of the screen behind the plastic bezel but does anyone know what exactly that interacts with inside the laptop? Is it something on the LED board, the left end of which is about where the magnet is when the lid is closed. I've read that modern laptops have a 'reed switch' activated by the magnet but I can't see one.

I recently attempted to reboot my Lenovo G505 from a hybernated state. Much to my surprise (and shock), I encountered a white screen. I attempted to reboot the system by force, to see if that would resolve the issue. Now, my system boots up just fine, but the pre-installed screen will not even light up, nor will it be detected when I attempt to identify it under Control Panel. Thankfully, I have another screen that I am able to use to actually visually interact with the system, but I still would like to know my options for repairing (or possibly replacing) the original screen. Like I said, the system is operating just fine... it only seems to be the screen itself (and the camera just above it) that's inoperable. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Friends,

This query may sound kinda 'odd' but I thought of it giving it a try all the same.

It is my ol' trusty Fujitsu Siemans Lifebook S 4546, the P3 one.

It has Win XP Pro as the OS.

Now the battery is dead a do do, it wont boot or start at all.

I have ordered a new lap top battery but being XMAS, no action until after New Year.

And right now I am in dire need of some urgent files on the HD.

So the question is-
is there anyway we can get it started, perhaps some guyz have some tricks n tips up their sleeve.
Pls share that with us. Wil apprec that a lot.

Thx a lot and a Merry Xmas to all.

Cheers

After disabling and uninstalling Cortana, Edge and others as well as Search I ended up with 2 dead icons in the All apps menu one for Search and one for Edge. When I drag the Search icon to the desktop it's named as:
@{Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_1.4.8.176_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewyms-resource--Microsoft.Windows.Cortana-resources-TileDisplayName} but not sure I want to start deleting various reg entries where this shows. I also tried in all the usual places where the shortcuts are supposed to be but nothing worked and the icons are still there so wondering if anyone has an idea how they can be removed if at all. It's more of a cosmetic problem as I have no issues with Windows otherwise

Here you go brother, shimshom

Get a yourself the Unlocker 1.9.2 ( install it )

Get your self also take ownership right click command tool
Here is the task after you get both tools

You need to remove the entry from AppData\Local\TileDataLayer\Database\vedatamodel.edb or rename it to vedatamodel.edb/temp after you pushed the ownership command and the unlocker tool in rename mode

Also take a extra backup copy of it, just in case something does go wrong.

*** Reboot your windows and the broken link or dead link within your windows 10 menu should be gone.

You might need to add new short cuts again yourself example office and other apps you have installed, after the menu system sector has been flushed after the main reboot that... Read more

So the other day my pc screen went totally blank with no icons or start menu. The only thing that appeared was the wallpaper. Earlier Avira alerted to a couple of possible threats but I thought they were false positives. Though I was fairly certain I had some sort of bug because I was getting popups for different electronics sites. I tried to run some antispayware but was not having luck. Superantispyware would not run at all. I would get an error message sating access denied. I tried to run Malwarebytes and it appeared to be working then something happened... I minimized it or something and it went poof. So I had no icons or start menu after that.

I tried restarting multiple times but no luck. The same thing happened in safe mode except the screen was black instead of having wallpaper. I could only get access to cmd prompts and task manager.

After I realized I could open and run programs using the task manager I managed to run system restore and after system restore ran it said it was unable to restore anything and no changes were made to the pc however I did have my desktop back. So I used the pc for about a day when suddenly around 9 or 10pm everything went blank again. I managed to run Malwarebytes during this time and it did seem to find several files (not just cookies) and I removed them and allowed the pc to restart as it requested.

Then I tried to restore it again but for some reason I couldn't get it to work the same way I did before. So I just tinkered with... Read more

A:No Desktop Icons or Start Menu- Exploerer Dead

Terribly sorry, I am not intentionally posting just to bump my thread but I realized that "right clicking" on the desktop is what's causing the desktop to disappear. If I right click on the desktop (not an icon) everything gets wiped and so far the only way I've found to get it back is using system restore.

Also, I am totally unable to start Avira Antivir. It says Service Stopped on it's little console and when I try to enable it, it just hangs up for a few moments then this little help link shows up on the console. If I click that it will hang up again for a bit then nothing happens.

thanks again.

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my Lenovo G505. It has failed to connect to wireless since I purchased it. When in warranty it was sent away on a couple of occasions for 'repair'. However it continues to show connected, but then drops to limited every minute or so. Its been locked away for the last few months due the above frustrations, but wanting to work from home I thought I'd give it one more try. I have browsed a number of topics, but have not had much success. Is anyone able to point me in the direction of a possible known fix? Hoping Lenovo can restore my faith.

Hi, I have G505 59379534 with 8.1 64 bit OS. It is out of warranty. Till a few months, DVD drive was working allright. But now, even after inserting DVD or CD, I am getting insert a disk message. No CD or DVD is getting detected. Also sometimes during start up, some sort of crackling sound is observed to be originating from DVD slot. Help in this regard is requested.

A:Lenovo G505 DVD drive not working

Hi Arm-1969,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue the DVD not working in your Lenovo G505 laptop.

Check with bootable DVD, does the DVD is detected in BIOS?

To resolve this issue, remove the affected filter drivers.

To do this, click on Start,  type regedit in the search box, then click on regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, key in your password or click continue.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note that there could be several instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in the above step so make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the upperfilters and the lowerfilters values.

To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is
DVD/ CD-Rom and the class data value is CDrom.
In the right panel, right-click upperfilters , and then click delete . Click yes to confirm the removal of the upperfilters registry entry. In the right panel, right-click lowerfilters , and then click delete . Click Yes to confirm the removal of the lowerfilters registry entry... Read more
