Vista Niggles. Low Battery Alert. Auto-Hide Start Bar. MSN/Windows Live After Standby

Q: Vista Niggles. Low Battery Alert. Auto-Hide Start Bar. MSN/Windows Live After Standby

Hi

I'm hoping someone can find an answer to my vista problems. It's on a Compaq (HP) CQ60 laptop with Home Premium.

1. My low battery alerts don't work properly. I have it set to alert me of low battery at 12% ish and then hibernate at 7%. I have only ever seen the low alert once I think so it just hibernates with no warning. I get the low battery warning triangle on the battery tray icon but no pop ups. Also there is no 'Time Remaining' just a percentage but I think this is a problem that doesn't have a solution.

2. Occasionally my start bar (which I always have set to auto hide) stops hiding. It sits on top of the status bars of my programs and is really annoying. I can't seem to see any pttern to why/when it does it. Sometimes turning off auto hide and then turning it back on will fix it but this doesn't always work.

3. After resuming from sleep MSN/Windows Live won't work. It is still running but it logs me out and won't log back in. It's effectively a dead window that looks like it's running but no buttons work. Only way to get it back is kill it in task manager & restart it.

Hope someone can come up with some ideas?

Thanks a lot

Phil

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can anyone advice on how to to remove/hide the Windows Live Messenger Download from the Vista start menu ?

I understand that the Window Live Messenger can be disabled using the GPOs settings, just wondering whether the Windows Live Messenger Download can be remove/hide from the start menu using GPOs setting.

Would appreciate anyone's help on this.

Thank you.

Hello Ahjik, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I'm not sure what you mean. If you mean a shortcut of this in the Start menu, then are you not able to right click on it and click Delete and OK/Yes to allow it to be deleted?

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Dear Brink,

Is it possible to disable/re-enable or hide/unhide Start Menu in Windows Vista via registry, using VB6 or at least disable/re-enable all items in (shortcuts and everyrthing else in Start Menu) in order to exclude starting of ANY program via contents of Start menu in Vista while my own application is active?

Could it be possible to disable/re-enable "Windows" key or any combinations of keys such as "Windows" + "Esc" via registry, using VB6?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi guys/gals.

I've been using computers since 1982 mainly for programming. I've used all versions of Windows from 3.11, Win95 B and C, Win98SE, WinME, Win2k, WinXP 2002 Pro, Vista Home Premium 32bit and Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

1) Now all Windows before Vista (and Win7) had an option in Windows Explorer (which I use a lot) to have the function/icons available on the menubar, Del, Cut, Copy, Paste, Properties etc. I know you can use the universal short-cuts for these options which I'm using.
Is there any way I can add these icons to the menubar?

2) With all previous Windows versions if you use the Run: option it remembers the last run or all previous run files. With Vista nothing is remembered. I use CCleaner to clean the run options but if I don't do a clean the options aren't remembered.
Is there anyway to have these files remembered?

3) Windows updates - On Win7 there is an option on the Windows updates not to display them again. I have 2 options always displayed that I don't want to use. Is there a way on Vista to disable them?

Cheers.

A:Vista niggles

Start menu icons a bit wrong.?? .. remove them and go into Safe Mode .. then reinstall the shortcut .... sorted innit.

Save the shortcut in a spare folder first because you cannot get online in safe mode, then all you have to do is drag and drop into the start menu, works for me every time .. good luck ... god bless ... see you in internet hell.

my Yoga notebook failed to start due to a critical low battery, assuming the battery was dead. Ordered a new battery and installed it, worked fine, however it showed up as plugged in, not charging. Ran the energy management and it showed the battery level in whcih was level, status of battery was showing good. i have done pretrty much everything possible, mains off, unplugged battery, held power button 30 sec, played with power options, etc. The only thing i cannot do is update the bios as it needs the battery and now its dead flat and wont boot up unless a disconnect the battery. From exhausting every options available i am starting to think its the chaging circuit on the board that is faulty and noting to do with the battery. The notebook is almost 3 years old and worked like a rock until now. Has anybody else experianced this issue, any feedback will be appreciated.

Hi,

First of all: I know that I have been having a problem with my HP Laptop Battery, and with its cooling Fan.
However, I am now wondering what detected this error below as long as it was shown even before the notification saying 'the press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' Thus, if the BIOS detected that there was a problem with the HP Battery storage', then this error should have been listed after 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' was passed.

'HP Battery Alert:
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.'
That alert lasted about 15 seconds, and then the 'press 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' is shown.

Next: This is error below showed me::
'The system didn't detect that a cooling fan is operating correctly'

I know that BIOS detected that a problem with 'Cooling Fan' since the Alert of error was shown after passing 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.'
Any comments would be highly appreciated

A:'Battery Alert' appears before the 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu'

I have no clue what you mean by start up menu. But that message is from the BIOS.

Windows taskbar is often really pesky and won't hide even if I checked the "auto hide the taskbar" in the taskbar properties.

A:Windows taskbar won't auto hide

Apparently this problem has been around for a while. According to this Microsoft forum thread, many times it can be the result of an older program or application sending a command to unhide the task bar so an application or program update (or some other message) can be viewed.

Taskbar does not Auto-hide all the time Windows 7 - Microsoft Community

I'd start out by looking for application conflicts. Run a clean startup (AKA clean boot) and see if the problem goes away.

Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

If that doesn't help you could try looking for damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Personally, I think the best solution is to remove all the HP bloatware from your computer. You could do a clean reinstall (my recommendation) or try to clean up just the factory bloatware which many times prevents Windows 7 from working as it should (not quite as good as the clean reinstall.)

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If using windows 10 (this is the mode I fixed it in) right click on the taskbar and uncheck ''show task view button''

Hello Rockit,

The problem is that the registry setting for this is a binary value that includes other settings that will vary per user account, and can't have a universal on/off for everyone without affecting the other settings.

If you like, you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to help create a couple of .bat files or a script to toggle taskbar auto-hide on/off.

Using Windows 7 64-bit on a multiple monitor extended desktop: I've set my taskbar to auto-hide. I'm not sure which application is causing this to happen, but I've managed to get Windows to not display the task bar when I mouse over the bottom of the screen when the currently focused application is maximized. If I normalize the application, I can get the task bar to un-hide.  I had four apps open this morning when it happened again - Firefox, Thunderbird, Windows Explorer, and Visual Studio 2008.  I suspect that Visual Studio is somehow the culprit, but it's kind of difficult to quantify. Once the task bar decides that it doesn't have to un-hide itself, only a reboot fixes the issue. I saw this behavior in in the release candidate as well.

Just upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 7 Ultimate.

I'm having a couple of issues with the taskbar, and I was wondering if anyone else has had these issues, and knows how to fix them.

I use multiple monitors, and use multiple taskbars.

First issue: Program on 2nd monitor gets notification, and unhides taskbar (normal). This also seems to unhide my primary monitor's taskbar (not normal).

Second issue: When using auto-hide taskbar, fullscreen videos, such as HTML5/Flash the taskbar is still visible, and the video doesn't go on top. This does not occur when the auto-hide feature is disabled.

For what it's worth my installation is fully updated.

Pictured is an example of the second issue.

Thanks.

Ok So I made a folder with a bunch of shortcuts, then dragged the folder to the top of my screen to turn it into a toolbar. I like it a lot - the only problem is , when I go to close a program in the top right corner, I frequently hit the top of the screen so the toolbar pops up - this is rather annoying. It also happens if I put the toolbar on the left side of the screen - pops up whenever I try to hit the 'back button' on firefox.

Anyway I was wondering is there a registry settings or some settings to change the delay, so that it only pops up if I hold the pointer for a certain amount of milliseconds?

I'm not interested in downloading any third party software- i know there are ones that exists that will do what I am looking for..

Thanks

A:how to change the delay for the 'auto-hide' feature on windows xp toolbars?

I found a program called "taskbar activate" made by some french guy. It works well although it seems to auto hide my bottom taskbar which I don't want it to do (even though the windows settings has auto-hide taskbar unchecked).

I do liek it because it gets rid of the stupid line windows leaves. Like on my left taskbar, whenever it closes theres still a trace of it, like I can see the edge of it and its so annoying. Only clicking 'show desktop' will get rid of it, but then as soon as I click anything, it appears again.

Also for this program I will have to add it to start up with windows every time. Its not a big deal seeings as it takes up 2mb of memory.

I wish windows had these options built-in though.

Customising Vista Start Menu and triggering a bug.

I have just been adding to an article written by TechPro5238 with respect to Customising the Vista Start Menu.

While writing my section, I have discovered a strange bug that can cause (Windows) Explorer to close and restart when entering data in the search field.

I have given the cause and and effect details in TechPro5238's thread. If you have customised your Start Menu or are thinking of doing so, be aware of a potential minor problem. see:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f214/beginners-guide-to-windows-the-start-menu-228981.html#post1385453

The problem is very easily overcome, so do not let it stop you from customising your Start Menu.

Hello,
When I set some programs(I found 2 of such programs - Opera 10.50beta and Eclipse) to maximized screen, the task bar is no more accessible. It is set to be auto-hiding and always on top. Programs are not in full-screen mode(i.e. f11 doesn't help). Pressing windows key on keyboard is not the way I like it, plus these keys are usually locked to avoid pressing them by mistake (Logitech G15 keyboard). That happened at the first day of fresh install. Any ideas on how to fix it?(turning off auto-hiding helps, but I don't like it )

Same on netbook Acer Aspire One.

A:Taskbar auto-hide

I am having same problem. When Windows Media Center is maximized , I can not mouse down to bring up the hidden task bar. This happens on my desktop and on my netbook. I have Win7 Home Premium on both and both are up to date. With Windows Media Center I thought this might be a feature rather than a bug, TV without distractions for example. Not sure.

Then I noticed the same thing with Firefox 8 in full screen mode. Firefox is fine when maximized. The full screen mode I am referencing is the Firefox full screen mode.

I saw others having the same issue with Google Chrome as well as other programs.

I know all the work-a rounds, so please don't post those.

Is this a Windows 7 problem or is it the way programs are written? Maybe something to do with focus? Maybe hard-coding the height of a window and thus not allowing space for the mouse to bring focus to the task bar?

Don't know.

Any ideas?

Auto hide not working for XP task bar. It works once but as soon as you hover the mouse over it, it stays up on the desktop

Hi donchampo, welcome to TSF

Locate your Prefetch folder:
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\.

(Back up the entire folder in another location just in case anything goes wrong).

Delete the entire contents of the original folder located as described above.

Now reboot windows, this will force WinXP to re-build the folder and so fix the autohide bug.

Anyone else seen this. I cannot get the task bar to auto hide. I tell it to auto-hide, but it always stays on top, which is annoying because it covers other useful stuff.. Any help appreciated..

A:Why won't the taskbar auto-hide?

No problem here. I assume that by "telling" it to autohide, that you are selecting that option on the Taskbar tab of the Taskbar and Start Menu's properties. If that be the case, I don't know the solution to the problem. Has it always been that way, or did it change at some point?

Hi,

I have recently set the taskbar to Auto-Hide, but I am having some issues with it.

First of all, I can see a few pixels of the taskbar on the bottom of the screen (small line, not completely hidden).

And second, when I hover (the mouse) over the hidden taskbar, it comes up very slowly. Is there a way to increase the speed of this?

Hi there, new here.

Just recently updated to Windows 8.1 via Windows 8's Store. One thing I've noticed, though, is that two tasks - Idle Maintenance and Regular Maintenance run when I'm on battery as opposed to just when I'm on power (I use a laptop). Curious, I looked in Task Scheduler and found that both of these tasks have the option "Start the task only if the computer is on AC power" is set to OFF. Whenever I try to change it, it does work...until those tasks run again, where they reset to what they were. I even tried disabling them and they still came on when I booted up the next time.

Please help. I really don't want to have to keep setting these and/or staying on power.

I was just wondering if there is anyway that I could set my windows 7 task bar to auto hide all the time, plus always stay on top. It already auto hides fine but sometimes I open a maximized window and it covers the small task bar thing at the bottom when it auto hides. So when I need open the task bar by hovering over it, I can't and have to minimize the window I had open, and that gets very annoying.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.
