Problems with HCF PCI modem drivers and display problems with a older laptop

Q: Problems with HCF PCI modem drivers and display problems with a older laptop

I installed windows 7 x86 on a older Toshiba satellite 1905-s301 laptop. It runs fine and it told me I could install the driver for xp in compatibility mode but im not sure how to do this. Also the laptops video card doesnt support directx 9.0 so i cant run aero is there any way around this?? Im not even sure if I want to turn it on because the laptop would crawl but I would like to get the message out of the message log down on the windows bar.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

So, I've been trying to fix my computer for... 2 weeks.

And basically gotten nowhere, so I turned to this and hopefully learn something new and fix my problem.

So I have an older model computer, Pentium 4 Hyper Threaded. (This computer has no more than an AGP bus)
Don't have enough money to upgrade so I'm going to ignore anything about "WHY DONT YOU BUY A NEW COMPUTER", I simply can't right now.

The stock video card for this computer was an nVidia but now I got it with a ATI Radeon HD 4650 AGP, and lost the disk that goes with the Video card.
My OS is Windows Media Center 2004, and can't seem to download the simple Catalyst from AMD, but it won't download, the install goes through then says it can't go any further, and stops immediately.

I have Microsoft .NET Framework, I'm sure.
Yet it still doesn't work, and I don't know what to do really, I've been to DiamondMM.com and that was the Manufacture for the video card but they didn't really have anything so I'm not sure what to do.

I tried putting on the hotfix on my computer before I reformated for the 2nd time, but it wouldn't even start up normally it would force itself to reset and go to Safe Mode Instead.

I have a dual boot system running 2000 and XP Pro. I just installed a 56K Voice Modem via a PCI slot on my computer. The driver installation went problem free while using 2000, but when I try to get the drivers going on XP I keep getting an error message. This message comes up as I go through the Add New Device wizard.

There was a problem installing this hardware:

56K PCI Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A

An error occurred during the installation of this device.

The required section was not found in the INF.

I made sure to download the specific drivers for each operating system, also I made sure that I downloaded the proper versions for the modem that I have. I did some research and found that the "The required section was not found in the INF", is an error message that people encounter with various devices such as webcams and printers, mine happens to be with a modem.

Does anybody have any suggestions? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.

i really hope u all can help me becasue no one out there seems to be able to. My problem resides with either my drivers or a corrupted windows 98 sys.ini. I recently installed a new HDD and then installed win98 (first edition). upon first start my screen was a mess the graphics in the background where fine but the letters under the icons were either missing or highlted in black, let alone it just froze up. I resolved this problme in safe mode. I have discovered that a line in my sys.ini boot section was causing this problem ( well at least contributing to it). the line is pnpdvr line. if i enable this line my comp on restart doesnt work ( the icons letters are gone and it just freezes up) if i disable this line my comp works fine BUT i cant view my screen at anything higher than 16 colors. I have reinstalled windows several times hoping something would change but it has not. I have reinstalled the drivers to my video board many times, this did not help. I have downloaded new update drivers for my board , this did not help. I have also installed TWO different boards with their drivers, this did not help. So here i am ... i have done everything possible with the drivers! i have installed a total of three different video cards and there different drivers to no evail. Everything was fine yesterday...but when booting up this morning only one of my 2 monitors had the green LED on and was working. The other display was orange and off. Only if I remove the ATI drivers do both displays come on. When I install ATI drivers, only one will work.

What I've tried:
Uninstalling/installing various versions of ATI drivers for this card, including the one that worked yesterday. No other changes to this system were made yesterday.

My laptop is an ASUS U50F and has been getting worse and worse as I have tried to stay current. My latest status was Windows 10 which was totally up to date except for some drivers that I had to force because those pushed by Microsoft plain did
not work with my hardware. BTW: Microsoft compatibility check for Win 10 said totally compatible . . . Absolutely wrong. Many things did not work properly.

Even then things finally got to the point that the Laptop was SO slow under Win 10 that it was completely unusable. So I finally bit the bullet and decided to restore the laptop to it's original

But not so fast . . .

When I tried to install my Kaspersky AV it said that t needed at least Win 7 SP1. So I started trying to update Win 7. The only "important" updates were Windows Live essentials 2011 and Office
Live add-ins neither of which looked that important, but I installed them anyway. When I run Windows Update "search for updates" now it just spins its wheels . . . forever, and does not find anything to update (i.e. no SP1). But when
I look at Update History it shows "Windows 7 SP1 for x64 based systems" as successfully installed even though SP1 is not shown when I look at Computer Properties under Windows Edition (it should say SP1 if that i... Read more

Hi. I'm trying to help a friend out. She has braodband, which she connects to on a PC via a USB modem. Her sister is also able to connect to the Internet with no problems if the modem is plugged into a USB port on her laptop. My friend has just got a new laptop for herself, and she tried to do the same thing - plug the modem into one of its USB ports - but it won't work. The light on the modem just stays red and it says it can't connect.

I know this is a long shot....but does anyone have any ideas at all about what may be wrong? Is she/am I missing something obvious?

Hi all,I've got a problem with my laptop's display and I'd really appreciate some help. I formatted it and now I don't have the right drivers and I don't know how to fix it because every time I try to install the right drivers from the ATI website (and believe me when I say I've tried a fair few) it tells me setup cannot complete and that I should try to set up my display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup. It's an Advent 7102, mobile AMD sempron 3000+ and a 15.4" widescreen TFT (XGA 1280*800). It's currently on 1024*768 and everything's stretched and slightly blurry. That's the only option I have aside from 800*600.It says the graphics are by ATI radeon xpress 200m with PCI xpress graphics. I'm on XP pro (sp2).So, does anyone know how I should set up my display adapter with a standard VGA driver? Google would suggest this is a common-ish problem but I can't find any advice given to those who already posted it that works for me.I've also tried uninstalling "video controller (vga compatible)" in the device manager which has a yellow ? next to it, and then installing the drivers from ATI but it doesn't work.I'm at my wits end and I need to take the laptop to University soon so like I said I would really appreciate any help! Is there any other info I've left out?ThanksLaura

Ok, what does it look like in devmgmt.msc, meaning is there a yellow blob on the sound thing. If so, uninstall(righthandclick)refresh and direct if prompted to have folder which has the driver.

Bleeping laptop!

Hey everyone! I'm having issues with my HP Pavilion dv2000 series laptop.

My OS is Vista Home Premium SP2, with an nVidia GeForce 7150M/nForce 630m display adapter

Recently I've been having problems with the display. These are intermittent and it seems to have no rhyme or reason to when/why this happens.

About every other restart, I get the following errors:

1) The taskbar will not display system icons for anything (network, power, etc) and when a program is opened that goes to the system tray (like VLC) it will not show up. Right clicking and selecting the properties of it, the selection boxes for everything except "clock" are greyed out.

2) Right clicking anywhere on the menu, desktop, or within an application like excel brings up the appropriate right click menu, but it will not disappear (heard this is a fairly common problem)

3) The system clock does not update in the taskbar. It freezes upon bootup, but if I double click on it, the popup shows the correct time.

4) This makes it impossible to update MalwareBytes. I thought I had a virus, but when I open MBAM and click on the update tab, it looks to be selected but I still just get the basic default screen.

5) Any program I open will not show up on the taskbar, so if I minimize it I have no way to get back to it...

6) When the computer is like this, none of the "seek" bars work properly in VLC or Windows Media/iTunes.

When it happens, ALL of these issues occur at onc... Read more

My roommate just got a new studio xps dell laptop and we are experiencing a strange blue glow behind the text on the screen. It looks sort of like a hologram of the text behind the actual text. There is also a "twitchy" red glow around the toolbar and other places f the screen where the color is dark. Is there any way to fix this?

In this instance, this is probably going to go down as hardware problems. The screen in this case probably has some backlight problems, so I would suggest talking with Dell to see if they will honor a replacement of the screen or laptop.

Hi Folks,

I'm really hoping that you'll be able to help me out here. I've been trying to sort this out for a few weeks now (should have asked for help earlier I know). The set up I have is a Toshiba Satellite A100 running XP Media Center Edition and an HP Pavillon Desktop also running XP Media Center Edition. I have a cable modem which is a Castlenet CBV600E and a router which is an Encore Electronics Wireless Broadband Router.

All was working brilliantly, for 6 months until a number of things happened. The laptop got a couple of trojans and generally annoying malware on it and the broadband speed was upgraded to 4Mbps (I'm in Gozo, Malta, that's good for here!). Since then the desktop will connect fine through the modem and through the router (although through the router the speed drop by about 1/3, but that's another issue), but I can only get a stable connection for the laptop by plugging it into the modem via usb.

If I connect the laptop to the router by wire or wirelessly then the speed drops to 481 kb/s download speed, 148 kb/s upload speed and the pings rise to 385 ms (just tested on speedtest.net). If I leave the connection then the speeds will decrease until pages do not load at all and the pings rise to the 1000's ms. This can take from a couple of hours to 10 minutes. If I turn everything off, leave it off for a few minutes and start it all back up again the connection returns at a useable level for a little while, then degrad... Read more

I have a Sony Vaio laptop from a friend. It has a weird display problem. The colours are all wrong - pinks, blues greens, text is indistinct, swirly coloured lines prevent the screen content being read easily.
If I connect an external monitor, the display on that is fine. This suggests that the mobo/GPU is fine.
An odd twist is that, if I start up a CMD screen, THAT part of the display is fine on the laptop screen - a rectangle window of clarity on a desktop of swirly, miscoloured screen. Odd.
If I THEN plug in the external monitor the display is still ok on the external but the CMD screen THEN takes on the same faulty display characteristics of the rest of the screen. The CMD windows returns to normal if I disconnect the external mon.
Any pointers? I'm guessing inverter or bad connector but, before I strip it down, any thoughts?

A:Weird laptop display problems

Some thing to try first:
Enter the BIOS Settings. Is the display OK there?
Boot into Safe Mode. Same problem in Safe Mode?
Completely uninstall the graphics drivers and all graphics related software, reboot, allow Windows to install it's generic driver, reboot, then install the graphics driver clean (which you have downloaded and have on hand, of course).

I have a Fujitsu N Series Lifebook laptop whose monitor is not working. I have hookup an external monitor and it is working just fine. After doing this I opened the montor cover and checked all the connections to the LCD panel itself and unplugged and reseated every connection and also wiggled wires and connections when the system was booted up and found nothing that changed my problem. Also the switch that puts the laptop in standby when the monitor is closed, I could press it down and the monitor would light up for an instant then go back dim. This would also cause it to go into standby mode.

So far in my troubleshooting I have determined the the video card is working and also the cover switch seems to be working properly. You can see the the display on but it is very dim. I have also tried to adjust the brightness with no luck in fixing it.

Is their something that I may have overlooked? If not is their a repair or replacement that maybe possible?

Moving the mouse changes whether I see the top or bottom part. I've tried display settings and accessibility settings but can't see anything obviously wrong. Any ideas?

Am having display problems with my laptop:
Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705 Service Tage GQH1XB1
Intel Core2 T7400 - 2.16 GHz
Windows XP Pro SP3
2 GB DDR PC2-5200
Display Adapter - NIVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
2.5 years old and treated well (some travel)

All has been well untill a couple days ago when it would not fully boot up. All of the DOS type screens (even Dell's logo screen) showed odd patterns (pixelated tiled squares in the background). All DOS screens (safe mode start up etc) show special characters displayed in some odd patter (letter 'a' with the French accent character on top of it).

After the Windows loading screen dispalys (looks OK), you then get the normal black screen . . . then when it should be the desktop displaying, it is a psychedelic display pattern. It seems the apps and Windows are running fine but there is no display.

If I go into Safe Mode and disable the Display Adapter, it will then boot up reasonably OK using the default VGA adapter (as far as VGA goes).

I think it is the video card, but I would really like another opinion before I go to the trouble and expense of replacing the darn thing.

Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated!

About a week ago my comp was running fine and I had no problems. I was using Win XP Pro on my Advent 6414 PIII 1.1 GHz laptop and was using AOL to connject to the internet. I had Anti Virus guard working there too and thought things were ok....

I upgraded the AV Guard but halfway through the setup i had to turn the computer off.

When I started it up on Monday, there was a progress bar at the bottom of the screen consisting of really chunky white bars.

The XP screen hung there for ages and when it did finally load, the programs running were prone to freezing. Specific symptoms were the Display Properties panel locking up and then saying there was a WIN32.DLL error (Not Responding) and that it had to shut down. The desktop picture froze and each subsequent time i tried to start the computer it took longer and longer to start. The programs hung for longer and froze earlier and it got to the point where I lost everything. I had to reformat the entire hard drive and re-install XP.

Surely this would have cured the problems despite wiping out my extensive and dare I say excellent music collection..aaaarrghhhh!!
Alas it did not. i have re-installed XP only to find similar re-occurrences of the same problems...programs slow to load, Explorer locks up (the start menu is the main one) and now the pictures that I loaded for my desktop are being halved each time i start up.

A:XP Problems: Slow to load, DLL broken, freezes, modem problems the list goes on..

How much do you know about installing XP?
And, what options did you select during the process?

(No, it's not a simple, linear, process.)
First of all, if you wipe the drive you should do it properly. That is, you get a copy of the Disk Manager software from your hard drive's manufactuer and you use THAT to wipe the Hard Drive from a boot disk. Low-level format the drive, which means you write zeros to the entire drive including the boot sector. That gives you a truely blank drive.

Then when you do the XP install, windows thinks the drive is "Virgin" and does a complete partition and format. No information is retained.

If you wanted to be faste (but lazy) about it, you could just delet the partitions on the drive and then make new partitions, and then install Windows, but let's be sure we've done everytyhing we can to start with a blank slate, shall we?

But you're not done yet: You need to get the device drivers from your PC mfg's website. Otherwise, all the drivers that XP doesn't have aren't there, and your hardware is in "Default" mode (if at all).

NOTE: Before you start to do any of this, check with your OEM to see if they have any special "Non-DOS" partitions on your model of laptop. If they do, all this is for naught: You'll have to get them to put those partitions back on your machine before you begin re-installing.

Compaq did this a few years back to a number of their models, and it was a huge headache to ITs everywhere... Read more

I have a Sony Vaio laptop, model PCG-8M3L.

Just reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2, and everything seems to be working OK expect no sound. I went to Sony's support page and they no longer offer the drivers for this computer for download, I think you have to purchase them from like $40 from Sony and they mail you a disk.

Any ideas where I might be able to find these for free on the web??

In addition to the sound card driver, I would prefer to install all the necessary drivers for this laptop instead of using the default generic drivers that come with windows.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

(btw, I apologize if this issue has already been covered, but I tried searching a few times and I'm getting some kind of fatal error..?)

A:Where to find Drivers for an older Sony Vaio Laptop

Hello Chris

Go to Device Manager to identify the sound system and then search online for drivers

Right click My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager.
Click the + at sound
If it is Realtek go to the Realtek website and look for XP drivers.

You can do the same for all the drivers.
Be sure to create a System Restore point before installing a driver
Only install one driver at a time and make sure it is working properly before installing another one.

Hey. I just finished installing my Win7, and having a major issue.
I have a MSI Ex600 which has a Nvidia 8400M graphic card. The card only has a VGA output, and for some reason, I cant make my laptop to recognize my 22' Mag screen as a seperate monitor. When I click the identify button, it just shows '1' or '2' on both screens, and it drives me insane because its not supposed to be like this, it makes 2 major issues:

1. When I close the lid, the monitor shuts down aswel
2. The laptop is running on 1200x800, so when it pops up on a 22' screen, its just huge nd not comfortable to use.

It only recognizes it as a different screen when I do the "Extend" otion. but I dont need nor want that atm. I just want to be able to seperate my monitor from my laptop and have it run on a bigger resolution, like it should.

I heard theres something about the framerates, and i tried changing it to all possible options but still got nothing. every time i try and send it to the big screen it just says "Mode is not supported" and gives me a range of Hrtz that changes every time I make it on a nother resul.

Please help me. I'm going insane here because its not fun working like this and it annoys me having my laptop open all the time.

I have to mention that I did get it to work once, but I restarted my CPU and I couldnt get it right again since, I tried everything but nothing worked. just pointing this out so you know there must be a solution, because it worked once.

If I understood your post correctly, your displays are working exactly as they should in Win7.

You find all display options from Screen Resolution tool by right clicking desktop and choosing it. When desktop (display) is extended, if you want to use just one display you have to first make it your main display and then disconnect the one you don't need:

When using duplicated desktop and you want to use only one display, you have to choose Show desktop only on X, where X is the number of display:

If desktop is duplicated, screen resolution is same on both displays. In that case the resolution can not be bigger than maximum resolution on the display which has smaller maximum resolution.

When using extended desktop or when using just one display, resolution can be different on all displays

Hope this is not too confusing...

I have a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and thought that it would be a good idea to try and find a way to connect it to an external display, in order to watch movies/play games with a bigger image etc.

I do not own an LCD/Digital type display in this house, but we do have an old JVC CRD-type analogue television (big 22" +). Of course, it's not a widescreen, it's a 4:3. So I bought a VGA to RCA Cable and connected the laptop to it that way.

However, there is an obvious problem in that it displays the picture in an almost sepia colour tone and times 3, each spaced next to the other horizontally. I have taken a picture, should my explanation not do it justice:

Please could some one explain to me, what it is that I would need to do, in order to get it to display correctly?

Oh - to note, my laptop was bought in the UK, and the TV I am attempting to use is Canadian - would this make any difference?

Many Thanks,

I have a laptop (VGA only output) that I connect to my TV. With XP, I could use both displays at the same time - that is: both the display on the laptop and the TV.

Win 7, however, only lets me use one display at a time. When my TV is connected, it somehow becomes the main display automaticly, and the laptop display goes black.

In the nvidia control panel, where I am supposed to be able to choose if I want to use single or multiple displays, I only get the choice of "single display".

Please advice! Is this possible to solve? I want to be able to "clone" and use both displays at the same time!

PS. I have a nividia geforce go 6100 chipset, and I've updated it with (as far I can find) the latest driver.

A:Laptop and Multi Display problems - please advice

Welcome to SF, Misscomputer.

Just to make sure, you are using your alt-(monitor fn key) and have had no success?

Please post your System Specs:

In the line at the top of www.SevenForums.com you will see UserCP.
That is an abbreviation for User Control Panel.
Click on UserCP.
In the left-hand column, under Your Profile you will see Edit System Spec.
Click on Edit System Spec
You can copy and paste from the output of Speccy, Speccy - System Information - Free Download to fill out much of the info. Be sure to use the Other Info section of your System Specs for such info as your optical drive, your wireless adapter, your speakers, etc.

Everything is fine when connected - then I close lid on laptop and the external screen becomes the main screen (with toolbar etc).

Already checked power options to make sure it?s set to, ?do nothing? when close lid but the problem persists.

Done some googling which suggests editing registry to ?lidalwaysopen? but that didn?t help either.

Any other suggestions?

[SOLVED] HP Pavilion dv9000 Display Problems
I would really appreciate some input as to what might be going on with my display.

Here is what my system looks like:

HP Pavilion dv9000
Windows Vista Home 32bit
Intel Core Duo 2.2
2 gigs RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8600m GS (256mb)
17 inch Widescreen

The Problem:

Yesterday I left my computer on and went to sleep. I woke up to use it and discovered that there would black out momentarily, and the screen would freeze. After a while it would come on again and there would be a message that the display driver nn.... did not respond and is now recovered. This has happened a few time now in the last 90 minutes.

What I've tried so far:

I used system restore to return to a previous restore point, but this doesent seem to have solved the problem

I would liket o know what the problem is and how to solve it. I also left it on the sofa and met the heat sink very hot as the heat had been unable to escape.

My brother says I have too many icons on the lcd dispaly and this could have affected the driver. Any ideas?

Thanks ahead for any response to this.

I hope someone can help with a simple question about a new laptop (Vista) and the lack of a parallel printer connection. I am told that I should just use the USB port and connect that to my printer. I use a bi-directional autoswitch to share my HP Laserjet 5 printer. The autoswitch receives the printer output cable and then it is shared to various PC's I have. I need to plug a DB25 Male into the autoswitch and the other end will go to now a USB port instead of the normal parallel printer port on the laptop. I can't find the correct cable anywhere so I was sold a USB to serial cable 9 pin and a 9 pin cable that connects to it with a DB25 parallel output to my autoswitch. It won't work and I thought it was the driver for Vista as all the other PC's work to the LJ5 printer.

Am I correct that the 9 pin serial connector will not carry the parallel print info to the printer and vice versa?

If so can someone tell me where to buy a USB to DB25 parallel cable?

A:Laptop Printing Problems -cable Or Drivers Or Both

I'd check Radio Shack for the converter. If not, then an extensive web search may be in order.

I wonder if the 2 adapters that you are using are bi-directional. Also, I've seen some postings on the web about shutting off the bi-directional aspect of the printer (which should enable this to work - although I haven't tried it myself).

My wife's hand-me-down laptop (from me ) had gotten a virus or some such, so we decided to reload the OS.

HP Pavilion dv8305us

I HAVE DONE THIS ONCE BEFORE... about a year ago. I had a few snags, but nothing like this.

When I bought the laptop, the day I brought it home, I was a good little boy and made the recovery DVDs like instructed. 5 years later, I tried to use them when my machine got so corrupted it wouldn't even boot.

"This recovery disk is not compatible with this machine" ........

So I bought an OEM copy of Media Center. I realize that it is not designed for my machine, but it worked a year ago?

The problem we are having is, the wireless indicator will not come on, wireless switch won't turn it on. We hook it up to router with ethernet cord and try to get online with IE. When we click on IE, it asks:

"Choose the program you want to use to open this file"

Media Center
Use MSN Explorer to sign up for internet access
Windows picture and fax viewer

We chose Media Center

"Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media Center"

So I go online with my computer and download the proper drivers for the ATI200m from HP, put it on a flash drive, load it into documents on my wife's computer, double click. Somewhere in the installation process, it stops and says:

"access denied" click "ok" and get "setup failed to launch installation engi... Read more

I have an intermittent problem with my Dell Inspiron 2650.

Occassionaly, the display gets screwed... but not in anyway I've read about on google so that's why I've joined here to see if anyone knows what may be the cause and can recommend a solution.

White stops getting displayed correctly, everything else is fine. Only areas that should be white seem to be affected. Other light colours, even almost white seem unaffected. The white areas become grey, first light grey, then after a while dark.

The first time this happened I thought I would have to buy a new Laptop, but the problem went away. Now it's come back (after several months). It's very annoying as I must work with imaging programmes... not really possible when you can't see white correctly.

The laptop is about 8 years old (so no free repair from dell). Windows XP sp2. Has anyone else experienced this?

A:Laptop Display Problems: White appears greys, other colours ok

Try moving screen in different angle to check if the problem is from the connection of your lcd....if nothings happen try to unisntall and reinstall the video card driver. If all fails contact dell support.

I bought an Emerson Swithchoboard about three or four months ago. It has been real helpful up to last week. Since then the modem light is dimly lit even when no one is connected to the computer. It doesn't seem to work either. Also it seems that my Modem speed has started changing too. It is a 56k and sometimes after connection it will say it is a 44 or even 53 sometimes and I can't get on the internet when it is connected sometimes. Please could someone help me.

A:Problems with Emerson Switchboard and Modem problems

Well a 56K modem never connects at 56K - it is limited to 53K by the FCC I believe. And then its affected by line quality, number of devices on the line, the ISP and several other factors.

If possible, disconnect the switchboard and see if the modem works then. If it is the only thing plugged into the phone line Nothing on the same line anywhere in the house) and it still doesn't work then its either the physical modem or software (drivers or windows). If it works then it may be caused by the swtichboard or by having too many devices on the same line.

If they ran on Vista they should run on 7.

I have a DELL computer that should operates using Windows XP but to save cost, i installed Windows ME. Then i recently i bought new CD-R. Then i have a portable CD-RW DVD Burner. I try to plug & play them. The computer recognised the device. But when i put in the CD-R it can't be read.

I tried putting the CD-R into the CD-ROM drive. It can't be detected too.

I do know older computers can't read later version CD-R.
The CDs and burner are 100% working fine. Because i tried them on a Windows XP.

I tried putting the CD-R into the CD-ROM drive. It can be read.

It is impossible for me to upgrade to Windows XP.
So i think the only way is to upgrade the driver.

Am i correct? Or is there anyway to solve the problems?

Can i just transfer the driver from the newer computer to the older one? To make the matter worst, the computer don't have a connection. How can i transfer the drivers? Can i just go to WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/ to get the driver files and overwrite those in the older computer?

Once again, it is the driver for the portable burner that i am going to upgrade not the CD-ROM drive.

I am specifically having problems with Age of Empires II and Populous 3: The Beginning. For those familiar with AoE II; when I click the multiplayer icon in the main menu, nothing appears in the list under "Connection type". So essentially, I can't play multiplayer at all.

As for Pop3, when I start the game (click desktop shortcut or the .exe), it goes directly to the multiplayer screen (where the host selects settings for the game). If I click "Back", the game exits. So here, I am unable of playing in singleplayer too!

Frankly I don't think these are game-specific problems. Something must be conflicting, either a setting or in the registry. I have no idea what the problem is though, but I posted it here since it's game related. I might try posting it in the networking section too.

I might have some luck reinstalling everything that has to do with connecting to other computers, but I need more info on how to do that. I've reset the registry keys for Winsock and Winsock2 already, which didn't work.

Hi everyone,

I've been having some trouble trying to install some of my older software (but not *that* old!) on my new Vista PC. It's the same with all of them: I run the Setup program, it opens with the little window in the bottom right saying the program is preparing to run the InstallShield Wizard, the blue percentage bar zooms up to 99%....and then it doesn't do anything else :(

I've tried running the setup.exe with the Program Compatability Wizard and have also made sure to right click on them and "Run as Administrator" even though I am the Administrator...but still no luck.

Any advice would be very, very much appreciated. I could really do with some of these programs on my PC and it's getting very annoying now :(

A:Problems installing older programs

Hi Laura. . .

Welcome back to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

One item that I would like for you to try -

Download the installable program file to your desktop. Right-click on it and select "Run as administrator".

Should that not help, see if the installation can be done under the XP compatibility mode. I am not sure if the following option will be available for install-modules (usually just for "exe" - executable files)... but let's check anyway. Right-click on installation module, select Properties... and see it there is a "Compatibility Mode" tab... if so select to run under XP.

Good Luck to you. . .

Hi. i have 2 older hard drives that i've been trying to figure out. 8.4 gig trigem and 3.2 gig fujitsu. the trigem drive simply does not want to power up. all i can say is that there is a green led light on underside of drive that simply blinks on and off. physical condition looks okay (no bent pins, etc). the fujitsu drive spins up but after a few seconds it simply quits spinning. i power off the computer and turn back on and it does the same thing. physical condition ok. (no bent pins, etc). now i know these are older drives and why waste my time with these but these are my learning tools as im sure many of you have the same or similar experimantal items to work with so any help would be appreciated. TIA

A:older hard drive problems?

Difficult to say. Helps to know the history of the drive.

I do mess around with a lot of salvaged equipment. For the hard drives I have an older computer that I've set up as a test rig. I know all the gear works as a complete computer. For the hard drive under test, I slap it into a removable tray and attempt to read it after booting on a floppy. If that works usually will wipe it and then reformat it as DOS 6.22 and attempt to boot from it. If it passes those tests usually be a good data storage drive. The entire test rig runs under DOS 6.22.

From experience, unless you have them in a known test situation, can spend a lot of time, you are taking some risks. Ones like you describe typically are boat anchors. Probably some software around to attempt to recover them but I deem it not worth it. The danger of messing with old drives in your good computer is causing additional damage. Remember they are available for a reason. In my case I have boxes of spare parts for the test rig.

If all else fails they have a small salvage value as metal and scrap.

Hi all.

here are the specs of my machine.

I have windows XP SP2, AMD K7 processor, Nvidia Geforce FX5200 with 128MB ram, 512MB ram with 219.29MB free, 224GB HD, DirectX 9.0c.

One of the games I am trying to run is "Requiem, Avenging angel" from 3DO.

I have played games on PC now for the last 10 years plus. I still have a lot of my older games which I used to run on my old machine running Win 98b with the older DirectX versions. I would like to be able to keep playing them, but games which use DirectX versions older than 7 cannot detect DX 9.

I have heard of some software which tells (lies to) the software that the version is what it wants. If this software exists or if there is any other workaround I would be very interested in any help at all with this issue.

Hey All,

I have several Yahoo Mail accounts, but the oldest one that I have is about 7 years old and sometimes I have to log in 2-3x before my user-name and password are accepted and I can get to the log in screen for my mail. (It says that the user-name/password may be incorrect, and gives the Hints.) Well, most of Yahoo's help pages seem to be for people who recently fell off the banana truck! My computer experience is above average. I can tell you that this behavior DOES NOT occur with my other Yahoo Mail accounts, which are newer. I estimate that 30% of the time, I can log in on the first attempt, 60% of the time on the second attempt, and maybe 10% of the time after the 3rd attempt I have to close the browser and restart. (If you get a failed log in after 5 attempts, your account is locked by Yahoo for 12 hours. Since I don't want that to happen, I close out after the 3rd failed log in.)

Yea, Yea, I cleared out my cache, cookies, temp files, and all that stuff. It doesn't seem to help. Since this problem is not affecting my other Yahoo e-mail accounts I don't think this is a cookie or cache related issue. Oh yea, the same thing happens on this older account whether I am using IE 7 or Firefox 2. I sent the typical forum response to "Yahoo Customer Care??!" So we will see how many pre-typed form answers I get back before I talk to a live person. I'll bet whatever it is, that the issue is on their end. I had mentioned in my response that... Read more
