Q: Delete local user account or change default account on start up

I have a local user account that comes up as the default user when Windows10 boots up that I would like to remove.

I have tried the usual user modification menus but this account does not show up. It is annoying to have to go through this false log in every time I start the computer.

Help?

Preferred Solution: Delete local user account or change default account on start up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I bought an HP Pavilion floor demonstration computer from a general retailer. The salesman assured me that all previous user accounts and information had been removed and the computer restored to its factory configuration before I took delivery. However, when I boot it up from a cold (power off) start, I get an error saying that the password entered for user Kiosk is invalid. Kiosk is apparently the name of the default start up user account. My workaround is simply to switch users to the administrator account. The Kiosk account does not appear in the list of user accounts in the 'add or remove user accounts' tab in the control panel. The Kiosk file folder in the Users folder is empty. How can I change the default start up user account? The store did not create a password reset disk.

Will it log in now using the Admin account? Is this the hidden Admin account?

If you don't want to run under the hidden Admin account, can you use it to create a new User account with Admin privileges?

With the huge load of bloatware that throttles Win7 on HP's I would consider Clean Reinstalling Windows 7 Factory OEM.

Well it looks like MS shot themselves in the foot again.  Over night my system has changed so that my personal account is no longer an administrator even though it is still listed as one in Computer Management.  In User Accounts it is set as
a standard user and it cannot be changed to an administrator user.  Why does MS keep screwing up Windows 7???  It is a great operating system other than the stupid things that they have done, like not being able to copy a configured user account
to the default user and now this!!!   My assumption is that they do not want corporate users anymore, they just want brain dead faux McIntosh home users!  What they are going to do is force everyone to run as "The Administrator" instead
of creating other user accounts, why did they drop the "Power User"?  That was a very useful account, I know it's still there but it isn't the same!  Mr. Ballmer, please retire and let someone with some brains take over this company before you totally

According to your description, I would like to say that if it is grayed out when you trying to change the account as administrator, it states that you
are already the administrator.


 

If you boot to Safe Mode, are you able to log in as Administrator? If so, go into User Accounts in the Control Panel and change your personal account
back to the Administrator type.

Hello,

A few months ago I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has Windows 7 installed. I blew through the set up process and I realize that I made a descision that I want to change.

My computer had a default setting for the user of OWNER-TOSH when I look at our network. How can I change that to a different name? I have cruised around the Control Panel and just can't find it.

A:Default User Account Name Change?

The best way is to MAKE and new account and then move all of your files to the new account. You will need to make all of you customization again.

AFTER you have moved everything and have been running the new account for a while (several days), then you can delete the account AND files from within Control panel.

Yes, there is a way to rename the account, BUT, the folder under "Users" will stay the same.

Hi,
I have a Windows 8.1 system on a lap top that was used by a former employee. Her name was still on user name and I couldn't change it without Admin privileges (otherwise was asking for a smart card). Found out how to get in to admin in safe mode with Net
User Admin yes- then discovered that the old log in and information / desk top is no longer available. The docs are under Users (old employee's name) in C drive, but the docs and settings no longer show up and the admin log in is the only one available - no
option to change users.
When I went in and said Net User Admin no - thinking if I disabled admin user it would go back to the old log in -  there was no log in available at all.

Hello all,

Totally baffled, twice now I've set up parental controls for my daughter but she ends up using an admin account which won't delete or downgrade to 'Standard'.

I was changing the account via Start Menu - Admin Tools - User Accounts (Home premium has no proper local groups and policy control) I go through the steps but account remains as admin account and won't delete either.

Have also tried deleting in Safe Mode (command prompt)

NET USER <username> /DELETE

I get the error 'net user system error user is not a member of group'

Now I have actually disabled the account so it's not available for login

net user <username> /active:no

But really have no clue why vista is acting this way and how my daughter is able to 'switch' to this account without even changing/knowing the password (it's the 2nd time it's happened and I actually changed the password the last time.)

Any ideas please or known bugs?

We are running SP2.

I tried to see Skype Video on Windows 10. Huge mistake.
It asked me for a Windows Account. (I just finished understanding what Google Account means).
I happened to have a Windows Account. I entered it and it accepted it.
It then asked that I must also change the password that I use for my profile on my desktop.
I obliged and sacrificed my simple password as it required a strong password.
So now I have a Windows password and my strong user profile password.
I rebooted. Big headache for the past two hours.
Neither passwords worked to let me in my profile (which has Administrator privilege).
I logged in as Administrator, went to Control Panel, Users accounts, hoping that being logged in as Local Admin, I can change the password of my profile. I can see my profile user account, but there is no way to change its password, only to delete or change to ordinary user.
I changed my Windows account password via my mobile.
Still, I can't log in to my profile.
Would somebody kindly help? or should I just dump Windows 10 and move on to Mac?

Good Day Everyone a few hours ago, I just finished installing Windows Professional x32 and had a problem with deleting the windows.old because of the permission bug.

Well I managed to delete the Windows.old by editing my security and user however when I log-offed, I saw another user account that I think I've mistakenly made while editing the security in the properties of a folder in windows.old.

My problem is, the delete function GONE!

The mistakenly made user is Administrator.
When I logged in Administrator, a pop-up appeared saying that it is a temporary user account.



I really want to delete it, It's a nuisance every time I log-in and takes some space.

Can anyone help me regarding this? I will appreciate it greatly.

This account is not able to be deleted. It is built in and has EVERY permission by default so you don't need to take ownership.

It is used to rescue your computer from viruses using Safe Mode, etc.

Hi,

We are creating a PDF file in login user's local application folder (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\folder1) through a custom .Net application and displaying the created pdf file in application.

The above functionality is working for users who are part of domain and added to local vista machine as users (both for administrator and standard user accounts).
The same is not working for local users (both administrator and standard user accounts created in vista box).

File is getting created for any user under their local appdata folder and can able to open from that location, but not displaying from app in case of local system users (admin or standard type).

Can anyone help me what security settings differ between domain users vs local users in vista business 32 bit OS?

Policy that is actually causing the problem (or lack thereof) is corresponds to Internet Options control panel, Connections tab, Lan Settings button: Use Automatic Configuration settings.
Having this turned on causes IE to load a configuration file prepared by IT department which makes a whole lot of configuration changes to IE, including remapping the security zones. We can test this by unchecking this option (the default state).
Since the machine is in domain and since we are testing with domain users accounts, I have monitored domain controller pushing down a bunch of policy settings which relax the IE security settings, causing the reports to display.
First, domain settings will resync over time and this checkbox will keep getting turned back on automatically. So you can?t really turn this off, it won?t stay off. I would feel better just testing local accounts, but since the computer is also a member of the domain, machine-specific policies are applied by the domain as well.

I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the conten/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile. I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?

In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

There are 4 conventional ways of accomplishing this task.

Option 1: Simply copy My Documents, Favorites, Desktop items from one to the other. You will have to setup program options again, may or may not be a big deal

Option 2: Use the Windows Easy Transfer option. Explained here. Vista & Win7 local to domain profile migration

Option 3: Use the Copy To Feature in User Profiles, explained here: Copy a user profile. The steps are outlined for different versions of Windows, but they work the same in Windows 8.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.

I have always been running admin and even until now I run as admin. But, I have been doing a little bit of research and realize that using a standard account is a safer practice. I have never even used a standard account. Is using a standard account a better practice? Also, how does doing average task such as installing programs and updating work through the standard user account?

Its safer to always run programs with lower privileges, and run as administrator when needed. Personally, I like my UAC set to the max. Basically, it stops programs from messing with your PC without permission.

I have realized that all the laptops I installed Windows 10 in the last year (several family laptops) are running with Microsoft-Accounts which are Admin-Accounts. Now I read that this is a serious security issue. I would like to change these MS-Admin-Accounts into MS-Limited-User-Accounts?

But how?

And next question: Should I set up for every laptop then a local admin-account?

As long as you have not disabled UAC, User Account Control, or invoked the hidden full administrator, then your users are actually running as standard users and will be prompted before performing any Admin level tasks - you can if you wish create a standard user on each of the systems in addition to the administrator, but this will not provide much better security and is likely to generate complaints from the users as they will have to set-up the accounts again to how they want them.

If you have any youngsters that you wish to protect further there is Microsoft Family Safety as an option

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows 7. About two or three months ago, I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account. I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege. It is not a huge hassle, as I know the administrator account password.

Here is where it becomes very strange. When I turn my computer on, it automatically logs me into my user account (the guest account). When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts, it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer. Also, when I try to change my user account (the guest account) to an administrator account, precisely nothing happens.

It gets evens stranger. When I log out of Windows, the only user account I can pick from, to log back into Windows, is the generic "Administrator" account. My user account is nowhere to be found. When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts, only the administrator account is listed. There is an option turn on a generic guest account, but nothing related to my original user account is shown. Again, this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account (the guest account), and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen.

Hello.

I've been using Windows 10 for weeks. Until today, it started up just fine by displaying my name and no email address. This is exactly how I want it to be.

Today when Win 10 would not recognize a printer, in order to download an "app" to help with this, I was required to provide a Microsoft email account, which I did (an old Hotmail account I rarely use). Now when I restart or wake up the computer, that old Hotmail account appears as "Administrator". However, I do NOT want that old Hotmail email address associated with this computer.

How can I remove it and get back to logging in with NO associated email address?

NOTE: I do not want to delete the old Hotmail account; just want to remove it from my Windows 10 "Account" menu (My name + Hotmail address + "Administrator").

In case it's required to associate Win 10 with an email address, I use Windows Live Essentials with a company email address. I tried adding it via the "Other Account" option, but Win 10 said it did not recognize the email address I entered, sigh.

I saw threads with a similar question but not quite the same.

Hi all.

I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.

I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me!

See the screenshots;

I would like Admin to be administrator, and Dell07 to be Limited... I do not have the option to change Dell07 to limited for some strange reason.

I have managed to do this on my parents PC easily. I simply created another Administrator account, then changed their account to a limited one. I don't understand why this will not work on Windows XP MCE...

Any idea why this is happening?!

You should log-on to the administrator account thru safe mode and this will allow you to change the account you want to so it will be a low-admin account. You can not change the account you are logged into t anything other than the account it is because it is the active account.

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

I have a corporate PC as well. The only way I know to work around this "fully" is to contact your network administrator. There is something you can try though.

If you know your domain name from work try typing this into your user id field:

<domain name>\<user id>

Then type your password accordingly.

I want to setup a Local User Account with Administrator priveledges on a laptop that currently has a single login via a Microsoft Outlook.com User Account, which I want to keep active.

I had assumed that this would be as simple a process as it was on XP, Vista and W7. However, I first consulted a number of other techical websites and have been rather confused by the large number of reported "issues" that users seem to have when setting up a Local Account.

Surely W8.1 permits multiple Users on the same machine and surely it is up to the owner of that machine as to whether they want a Local Account with Admin rights?

So why all the reported "problems" that Users are having when doing something which should be very simple.

Some of the reported problems are: -

- After setting up the Local Account the user could not login to the Microsoft Account
- User files in the Microsoft Account "disappear" after creating Local Account
- Microsoft services such as Outlook.com and SkyDrive stop working in all accounts after creating a Local Account
- Programs won't run under the Local Account unless the User activates "Run as Administrator"
- Profile of Microsoft Account corrupt after creating Local Account
- Locked out of Admin rights on both the Microsoft and the Local accounts

I would really appreciate some clarity over whether or not there are "issues" associated with creating a Local Account in W8.1

I just created a Local Account to try it out and encountered no problems as you described. But, I am running 8.1. Probably MS fixed a few things in this new release.

I've been trying to recreate/rebuild a user account for a local user. The user had software issues that were not present under other accounts.

I renamed her account to username_old. but instead of Windows creating a new account using their login name like I'm used to with XP, it is logging in under the TEMP account. I can't change anything in that account because when they log out there is no TEMP under the Users directory.

What do I have to do to have Windows recreate the user's account under their login?

Greetings all,

I'm hooked on Spotify, most of you probably know about it - It's like Pandora, iHeart Radio, and many more services that play thousands of songs on your mobile device. But there is an option to install it on your PC as well.

I went to do the PC install, and was given a message : "Spotify must be installed by a non-administrator account". OK. SoI played along and created a new user thru the Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management. Msft automaticaly put it in the Users group, so I thought that s/b fine. But no. I logged in as the new user, and when I tried to install Spotify with the .exe file that my login (Admin) had downloaded, Msft gave some permission gripes. Anyway, it did finally install under NewUser and brought up Spotify.

I knew I hadn't one the battle yet. I logged off of NewUser acct and logged back in as me. I didn't see a new profile created for NewUser **Actually, a new profile was made for the new user, it just took several minutes for the new profile to appear**. I did a search on all of drive C for 'Spotify'. I didn't get any hits, and figured Spotify may have an alias when installed. I believe it will just give you access to it via your browser, ?? But I see now Bookmarks, etc in Chrome.

So I'd like to assign my profile to this NewUser. It's really just a one time shot, hopefully - to get Spotify installed, and to put any related files into my profile folder. Then, assuming this works, I'll want to delete this NewUser. ... Read more

I purchased a new Dell 1764 Win 7 Professional about 2-weeks ago and have been learning how to use Win 7 - I consider myself an old XP guy!

I was in the windows explorer to see who was listed inder the Users directory where I found a directory with my name on it. I double clicked and noted the contents of the directory was the same as in XP. I clicked on the Local Settings directory (I temporarily turned off the "hide protected operating system files" option to see if contents was the same) and got a message that access was denied. I was told by a tech that this was normal in Win 7 in order to stop people from changing options, etc. which could cause problems.

My question is this - was the tech correct by saying it was locked for protection? If the answer is yes, then who can access the directory? (I have system administrator rights.

Hello Pierre,

Yes, he was correct. The faded shortcut protected OS folders are actually only "junction points" to the actual folder instead, and are not real folders. They are used for backwards compatibility for older XP type applications that still reference them by default instead of the newer default locations in Vista and Windows 7 now. They redirect the older application to the new Vista and Windows 7 locations instead.

From what I have read, in order to use OneDrive (integrated in the OS, not the web browser), you have to use a MSA account to login to the computer in order to use OneDrive.

Is there a way to use a Local user account, while still using OneDrive without using a web browser? Even if it means I have to login everytime I open the drive from Windows Explorer? I plan on installing Win10 and using a local account to use the computer (I have a MSA account that I can use for OneDrive, but don't plan on using it to login to the computer itself).

Dear all,
I am currently based in London. I have an issue with a staff's laptop based in Africa. We built the laptop and shipped it to them. As part of the build we put on our standard administrator account and then made a local account as they are not connected to our domain.

The user in this Africa office changed the local password of his account and now can't remember it therefore making the PC unable to be logged into. I do not want to tell him our administrator password because it's the same for all our PCs worldwide. I have researched many things to try and connect to the PC but it is now possible.

1. Browsing to the machine from another pc on the network using explroer and I can see the C Drive.
2. I tried running this command but I just keep getting error 1219: net use \\pcname\ipc$ /usercname\administrator *
3. RDP will not work, it just won't connect.
4. The PC I am using is Windows 8 home edition and not business which I notice is a problem as computer management does not have users and groups it appears. The remote pc is Windows 7 Enterperise.

So at the moment I just have a laptop that is stuck at the login screen.

I am currently based in London. I have an issue with a staff's laptop based in Africa. We built the laptop and shipped it to them. As part of the build we put on our standard administrator account and then made a local account as they are not connected to our domain.

The user in this Africa office changed the local password of his account and now can't remember it therefore making the PC unable to be logged into. This is a very strange problem that has been happing....

We run Windows Server 2003, all the client PCs run Windows XP Pro

We have on user who can login to her PC fine, but if she tries to login to a different PC it will let her login but not load any of her files, rather than My Documents linking to her My Documents on the server it links to the local My Documents in her profile on the actual PC.

All the other network drives work fine, so she can connect to all the shared stuff etc but just not her own personal files (my documents, desktop etc) I have logged in fine on her PC and the others that we tested her account on.

after some playing we found out that on her PC she is set as the local administrator, if we remove that (as she shouldn't really be set as admin!) she suddenly has this connection problem (and likewise if we set her to local admin on one of the other PCs sudenly the problem is fixed!)

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate (desktop machine). The machine has a number of accounts, each of which are logged in and running programs.

I've considered running VMs, but I don't want to break the licencing on the software that I am running. So, I am stuck with running multiple user accounts.

I'd like to be able to access the desktop of the other accounts without logging out and changing user. I considered the possibility of using remote desktop, but in this scenario, the computer has a single IP address.

Any suggestions for how to do this, or whether it is even possible?

Hi All,

Hopefully a straight forward question for you...

We have a company laptop that is normally used on our domain and the user wants to setup a local user account on it for home use. We have tried adding a new user but it keeps asking for the domain. I am presuming we have to leave the domain and setup a workgroup for example and do it that way?!? But this causes an issue when the user wants to go back on the domain at work.

Appreciate any advice/help.

Hi Friends,

I'm working on a Dell Laptop that has Windows 8.1 on it. User can't remember his password. I've tried at least 5 different various tools to get in, and all of them either don't see the drive, or see the drive but see no accounts, or give me error messages when I try to use net user to reset the password from outside the OS.

Please assist!

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

Don't even try would be my recommendation.

Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.

Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.

If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.

Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.

It is possbile to save the inserted data in this dialog screens and eliminate confirmation/verification screen in order to automate these procedures?

I installed Windows 8.1 Update 1 Enterprise 64-bit.

I created a local account and I changed the name displayed in the Start screen.

Then, by this account, I performed the procedure to switch to a Microsoft account.

I noticed that when, by this Microsoft account, I perform the procedure to switch back to the local account, the name displayed on the logon screen, it is to be returned to the original one (ie, the one of the directory of the local user profile). How come?

So, how do I make sure that, at the end of these procedures, the account name back to being what had been changed by me?

I bought a new laptop and it arrived yesterday. It runs Windows 8.1
I tried to log into my microsoft account, but it kept coming up with the error code 0xd0000072 and said it wasn;t able to switch from my local account to my microsoft account.
After googling it, I tried different options, such as flushing out the proxy even though I don't run on proxy, I disabled McAfee to make sure it wasn't the firewall, I signed into live and removed all trusted devices, I tried downloading the troubleshooter,which
told me my problem was that I didn't have a Microsoft account - super helpful.
Nothing seems to be working.
I then went on to trying to make a new microsoft account, but the error code still came up after all that hassle too.  
I eventually called it a night and decided I could probably just get by without it, however, when I tried to download software to install my printer, it wouldn't let me because I cannot seem to log in to my Microsoft account. 
Can anyone help?

I must create a roughly a dozen LOCAL accounts on a MS Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 that is shared in a workplace. The workplace has a Windows 2003 Server and a domain; the Surface is in the domain and known in the Active Directory.
I would like to create each account with a dummy password, and require the user to change the password immediately on first login.

How do I do that? Is the technique for Windows 10 the same?

Hello,

I have a rather unique setup here where I would like to be able to point domain user's roaming profiles to a local account on a Windows 7 PC. Would anyone know how to do this?

We have many computers here, all with a local user called "PE" for profile editor, which I would like to make the standard profile for people logging in. The systems are all locked down with a program called DeepFreeze, which means that no changes would be saved locally at all. Right now PE is set as the default user, so every time someone logs into a computer here, it copies the PE profile to their new profile. However with all the software we have, this profile is around 100 MB in size, which leads to login times of about 2 minutes.

My hope is that I can slim this login time down by implementing this:

1. User logs on with domain credentials

2. Because they have a roaming profile set up to point to C:\Users\PE, they are able to get right in with very little login time. Now they get on quickly and have access to their allotted network storage space.

3. When they log off, the computer will restart and will be back to a fresh image.

Step 2 is the one that I am unsure of how to implement. Does anyone see a way this could work? Thanks for your help.

I?m not a beginner in computing but fairly new to Windows. I read some 50 pages on this topic but can?t get it to go. So Here it is.

I deployed 60 student oriented computers going in the school classroom at Windows 7 Pro SP1. I installed Win 7 Pro SP1 on a target computer and created a ?school? admin account and a ?student? user account. Installed Office, registered Windows and office I
did Windows update.

I did a default sysprep, caught the reboot on Clonezilla, installed it on all other same model computers. At each reboot, it asked me to create another admin account and re-activated Windows 7 Pro SP1.

Now, I forgot to harden the ?student? user account. If I harden 1 student account on one computer, like remove the capacity to change the background picture, with the MMC with the local user and computer, choosing the student account and selecting what I want
to restrict.

1) Which tool can I use to transfer this students restrictions to other computer. LocalGPO, LGPO, LGPOPack, with/out MLGPO?

2) What would the command line for exporting the student account restrictions be?

3) What would the command line for importing the student account restrictions be?

Can anyone help??

I am having trouble with my Windows XP Pro.
I have two user accounts on my laptop, one is a domain account (work) and the other is the local account. Ever since I connected this laptop to my work domain I am unable to connecto to broadband anywhere else.

For example, I can connect to the internet fine when I am on the work network. However, when I am at home and logged into the local account I am unable to connect to the internet (whether it be wired or wireless).

I spoke to an IT friend of mine who (after going through a few steps) said that my local account seems to be using my domain account server to access the net.

Any help would be appreciated as it is driving me mad . Only other option I have is to reinstall.

I was having a lot of trouble creating a local user account with a powershell script.
Basically, the script would throw no errors, but the account would not be shown in "Control Panel\User Accounts\Manage another user account"

It would seem that the user.create functionality of ADSI doesn't work the same way in win 8 as it did in win 7.
I finally figured out that the accounts had been created, but they weren't a member of "Users" by default, and when they weren't a member of users, they didn't show up in the control panel.

Script Local User Management Module

Run the script above, and then run the following two commands:
New-localuser -username "newuser" -password "123456" -description "created by powershell"
Set-Localgroup -username "newuser" -groupname "Users" -add

That should create the new user account, and add it to the Users group, so it is visible and can be used.

I started off using a local account called "Default" with no password. I have since switched over to logging in with my Live account. Whenever I reboot or the screen locks it defaults me back to the local account. Now all I have to do is click the back arrow and select my Live ID but there has to be a way to default it to it.

Usually, it will show the user account that had just last signed out, restarted, shut down, locked, etc.... the computer by default at the sign in screen.

Was the Live Account the only one signed in, and the one that did the above?

User Account Type - Change in Windows 8

1. Run ''COMPMGMT.MSC''
2. On Computer Management -> System Tools - > Local Users and Groups and left click Groups to select.
3. You'll see Administrator group, you can click Properties
4. Administrator Properties click the Add button
5. Select the USER box type in the name or accounts you want to add to Administrator Group and click Check Names

Click Ok to Save & Restart with the new user you just added to Admin
