Preferred Solution: MY task manager and registry editor are blocked

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, I read Brink's tutorials on how to enable to the Task Manager if it was disabled but found out that my Registry Edit was disabled as well. I realize this is probably due to a virus, but I have scanned my computer multiple times with McAfee Antivirus 2010 in the past few months and have found nothing.

However, I'm having a bit of trouble enabling the regedit. I tried every method listed and I keep getting errors. This is the main one:

Can anybody offer some help please?

Thanks in advance.

And I apologize if I'm posting this in the incorrect subforum.

A:Enabling Registry Editor and Task Manager Help

Hi Scizor,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

If at any point the error message changes in any way, stop and post a screenshot of the new error as a partial fix may have occurred and we may need to change procedures based on the new information.

First, go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt and right click on Command prompt and click run as Administrator and type regedit.exe and see if you are now allowed access without the error.

If that doesn't work, try Method Three in Regedit - Enable or Disable to see if you can enable the registry that way (assuming you haven't done this already - but it seems it was run from the desktop and if run in an elevated prompt mode in a Command Prompt it might be more effective). Hopefully, that will do the trick (even if the Tutorial isn't really for this error but to fix a related issue - but it may work and is worth a shot). Once done, use the above method again to get to regedit.

If that doesn't work, then when did this problem start? Has it been recent enough that you have a System Restore point before it began? If so, try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use ... Read more

Hi all

I was infected which greyed out my task manager. Also when starting task manager or registry editor with command prompt was impossible. an error message saying that these functions were disabled by my administrator popped up.
Scanning with McAfee and BitDefender did not solve the issue. I ran CCLeaner but this did not do the trick and I tried Malwarebytes as well but (I think) the virus prevented it from running. You can run the Chameleon function of Malwarebytes but this did not help either.
Luckily with COmbofix my task manager and registry editor are accessible once again but Malwarebytes refuses to start and I also notice that Notepad prevents me from saving files. when I want to do save as, notepad crashes and I can do no more else then closing it with task manager.
I ran DDS and this is the log:

Hi All,Need help with infection on Win XP machine with SP3.This problem was identified when I saw that Task Manager and Registry Editor are disabled. So I ran MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware. The latest copies of MBAM & SuperAntiSpyware are showing Trojan/Gen-Virut in the Doc&Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\ folderEach time I run the above, many exe files with new names show up ( I looked up on the net to find that this is a polymorphic virus, so it can change names)Now the runs of MBAM and/or SuperAntiSpyware show this virus/malware each time, they "Claim" to clean or quarantine the infected files and ask for a reboot. But after reeboot, the I still find the task manager & regeditor disabled. I execute a vbscript file which has the following code, Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")With WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")On Error Resume Next.RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools".RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\DisableCMD".RegDelete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableTaskMgr".RegDelete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\DisableTaskMgr"End WithMybox = MsgBox(jobfunc & enab &a... I've been meaning to look into the fact that I couldn't access my Task Manager anymore at all or even when I try to run regedit I get messages like "Registry editing has been disabled by your computer administrator" even though I am one of two of the only administrators for this machine. I tried the System restore a couple of months back but that hadn't helped anything. Any idea of what's causing this or how I can fix it?

I attempted to complete a request received by garmanma to remove Windows Police Pro from my initial post and was advised to post in this forum if I experienced problems.

I attempted to download fixtm.reg and received the following error:

Internet Explorer connot download fixtm.reg from download.bleepingcomputer.com Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet Site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

Clearly this virus has a stronghold on the pc please advise on next steps to address the issue.

Edit Data: Here is the information provided in the initial post -

The PC virus protection expired recently and before I addressed the renewal my children apparently found a virus using the computer online. I am not able to determine the source of the problem or investigate as I am unable to open task manager and many programs. When I attempt to open task manager via ctrl+alt+del I receive an error message that states: Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator. Problem is my log in is the administrator or was until this unsightly virus arrived. When I try to right click the task bar to access task manager the option is grey and therefore I am unable to select it. I also attempted to open regedit.exe to see if task manager was disabled and when I attempt to open a command window it instantly closes.

Other information that may be of importance is when I reboot the pc numerous command windows automatically ope... Read more

One more item that I noticed the date and time on the pc is way off back in 2003 when I clicked the clock to change the time and date a command screen opens and closes quickly. While it is open I noticed that the blue bar at the top of the box reads C:windows\system32\ntvdm.exe for a blink of an eye and then changes to C:windows\system32\desot.exe before closing. Whew took a fast trained eye to capture the data so I am hoping this offers some assistance into the problem. Thanks for your help.

I'll cut to the point. I got a virus from a file I downloaded from Kazaa Lite. AVG Anti-Virus Resident Shield did not stop the virus from infecting my system, which upset me a great deal. So, enough chatter. Let's get to diagnosing and resolving.
Symptoms

- Task manager and registry editor close immediately (less than one second) after they are opened
- Task manager and registry editor both open just fine in Safe Mode
- Task manager works fine when I copy taskmgr.exe to taskmgr.com and run the .com file. Same goes for regedit.exe and the regedit.com clone
- Experiencing the following problems as reported on the Symantec Security Response report on W32.Spybot.Worm:

Creates and shares a folder on the KaZaA file-sharing network, by adding the following registry value:

"dir0"="012345:<configurable path>"

to the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\KAZAA\LocalContent

Copies itself to the configured path as filenames designed to trick other users into downloading and executing the worm.

Methods Proven Ineffective to Resolve Problem

- Found and deleted all files created in the aforementioned generated Kazaa share folder, with the help of AVG Anti-Virus
- Deleted generated Kazaa share folder (C:\WINNT\system32\shellext)
- Ran partial scans on suspected directories using Trend Micro Housecall
- Ran full scan using Panda Software ActiveScan. NOTE: This scan did detect and remove a virus, but did not resolve the prob... Read more

Hello, i'm new to this site, so if i say something stupid please be understanding.
(i'm running vista to clarify)

I had a while ago gotten a virus which would play sounds randomly, and i was able to temporarily fix it by going to task manager and killing the process. after a while the virus stopped bugging me (i guess the antivirus software caught the culprit.)

recently i downloaded an installer, and it happened again. this time i hit ctrl alt del, and task manager had been removed from the list. i tried accessing it through control panel and it told me it had been blocked by the administrator (me) i then looked up how to re-enable it, and went to run REGEDIT and that was blocked too. i've tried several scripts to re-enable regedit, all to no avail.

whenever the sound stops playing i get a message saying:
"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed

A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

i also found these 2 files in system configuration: BtwSrv (by Microsoft Corporation) and fastnetsrv Service (by Sigma Designs Inc)

I googled the second one, and found it to be a virus (yayy google!)
I am unsure about how to remove these, and i also found several remote applications which i would like to disable... help would be appreciated

McAfee identified a virus and removed it, however it keeps re-appearing

OS:Vista Home Premium 64-bit service pack 2
AV and firewall: Norton 360

I coudln't access task manager, and I didn't have administrative persmissions to access the registry, so I scanned my system with malwarebytes, it removed two things, included in the log.

Now I ran a full system scan with Norton 360 in safe mode. It only found tracking cookies.

Then I ran the Norton Power Eraser. It showed a few programs that I trust. And one of the programs it showed was called "system", the type was "System Settings", and the local scan said "Bad". If I clicked on the threat details it said :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"DisableTaskMgr

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\"DisableRegistryTools

Those were the two files MalwareBytes apparently removed.

In the last few months, the only viruses I got were in the past week. They were:

Trojan.Gen

Trojan.Gen

Trojan.Gen

Trojan.ByteVerifysvchost.exe

Backdoor.Trojan

svchost.exe

Norton has removed/quaranteed all of them.
The Malware Bytes scan log and the DDS log is attached.
The Norton Power Eraser Log was too big to upload, if it is needed than I could upload it to another site or something.

Got a bit of a wierd one here, when I try CRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task manager I get a message coming up that says

"Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator"

I had a look in

>Regedit
Then: HKCurrentUser \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System

And the value of this was set to 1, I reset it to 0 and rebooted but it had gone back to 1 meaning that CRL+ALT+DEL was still blocked.

Anyone got any ideas?

This is what happened when I tried to access Task Manager.

I think I might have a virus.

A:Task manager blocked? Virus? Not "blocked by admin"

Notice in the bottom right corner the task manager is still running and the restriction thing just prevents it from working. When I open it, task manager opens for a split second before the restriction thing pops up.

My daughter visited the wrong torrent site, and suddenly her Inspiron 1420 Vista laptop is spewing bogus virus detected warnings and offers to "activate" virus removal programs. Task manager is blocked (security pop-up just as it is killed says it is infected), and the only way to quiet the system is to get in right after boot, launch the task manager, find the alphabet soup process (starts with ybqktv) and kill it. Was able then to run dds.scr successfully, where it was blocked before. Didn't trust leaving the laptop networked, so I shut down the wireless and transferred dds.src to it with a flash drive (no autorun.inf). Also tried to run GMER.exe, but it blue-screened on both attempts once the scan started, so we have no output file to post yet. The only antivirus program she has is McAfee, and she says it's up to date with a subscription, but this stuff is apparently beyond its reach. Thanks for any help!ChuckOops, sorry about that - didn't paste in the dds.txt and attach the Attach.txt. After I downloaded the SKIDROW crack for Assassins Creed 2 a program started blocking me from accessing the Task Manager. I'm not 100% sure whether this program is linked to the SKIDROW crack but I'm pretty sure. Also I think it's a third-party software because there's a number telling you the version of that program. When I try to access Task Manager, it pops up a few seconds before the program shuts it down.

The link to the screenshot is:

Hi all,

My pc was running fine until a couple of days ago when my AVG apepars to have been corrupted. I got a lot of virus warning messages for Trojan Horse Generic 14 and then started seeing fake anti-virus messages etc.

I tried to remove these through avg but that failed and so I ran Malwarebytes which asked me to restart to remove some issues.

On restart I now have a blank desktop weith just my wallpaper and Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up task manager only shows the message "Disabled by administrator".

I have no idea what to do as nothing will run. Tried Safe mode and restoring to last known good configuration but neither work.

Any ideas? I'm really at a loss and need my PC back :(

Thanks

Ok. I eventually got it to boot from my Windows CD and did a repair install.

I've then set up a second/new username and have managed to get on to a working desktop. I've still got a lot of errors and a large black box in the centre of my wallpaper saying along the lines of "Warning, this system has been infected with spyware....blah blah blah".

What programs should I be running now to try and clean the system again so it doesn't happen all over again the next time I restart?

Thanks

:( Well the PC is obviously riddled with infections/keyloggers and Virut so I have some pretty serious problems.

No ideas where it came from but I went from having clean scans with avg/S&D etc to every scan finding multiple infections, many of which they ca... Read more

Ok I am currently using my brothers computer that he built by ordering piece by piece, so this may be diffictult to explain it, but the computer is running Windows XP
I managed to contract some virus of some sort. The first symptoms were pop ups of porntube.com, then the generic box of You have a virus download software now. I tried to get AVG to scan but it could not detect anything, and by the time it was done scanning the screen was filled with download antivirus screens, and porn pop ups.

So i restarted my computer, and tried to start it up in safe mode, but as soon as it loads all the drivers it forces a restart, I then tried to start safe mode with command prompt and network, but agian the same thing.

So I then tried to start the computer normally, this actually booted up into windows, I saw my desktop and a flash of the toolbar then everything dissapears but my background and nothing happens, when i try to reboot and hit ctrl alt dlt as soon as i see the desktop i get a message saying task manager is blocked by administrator. This is my home computer and there has never been an issue with task manager before.
The only other thing I can think to do is the Windows XP disk, and try something with that, unfortunetly it is currently misplaced and I think it might be in another city right now. Is there anything I can do outside of using the XP disk, and if I do in fact have to re-buy the XP disk (which actually will only be like 10 bucks due to the sweet deal microsoft... Read more
