I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: aspire 5742g turns off

It certainly sounds like a overheat problem. Try using a blowdryer on cool or a small fan blowing directly into the case and see if it still shuts down. Laptop fans can get plugged between the fan and the heatsink over time and you can't see it looking in the exaust. Thermal compound breaks down over time, gets hard, crumbles and loses it's properties.Does it run on battery alone?A dead battery can cause problems even on power. If you haven't done so lately, rum Malwarebytes https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Oh and also I want to play some games on this
it doesnt need to be Ultra High quality mainly Starcraft 2 and maybe some CoD

And lastly if anyone knows any good laptops for around $800-1000AUD preferably from an actual shop not online, plz tell me

thx again

P.S.S. sorry for my earlier thread post but i got the brand wrong... so im posting it again

A:Acer Aspire 5742G

Well if that price is legitimate its not bad. I do have to say that is won't offer full quality picture when playing CoD, but it is fairly nice. I can't say how good the Wifi is or isn't because I don't have an acer laptop, but I can say that this one is worth about $800-1000 depending on what kind of deal you get. You might want to look for a more reliable site to check the price on before you think about buying it though. I'm not so sure that it will be that cheap in a store. I would look at some different laptops though just to see what is out there. Some brands that I think are good are toshiba, hp, dell, IBM, Asus etc. I would not worry about the processor branding (i3, i5, i7) but look at the number of cores and the number of threads. A 1.7Ghz quad-core processor is better than a 2.4Ghz Dual Core. Dell, HP, and Toshiba allow you to customize laptops on their websites to choose your own upgrades, so you can pick your processor and OS, and whatever else. Be warned that when I say customize it is fairly limited.

Hello everyone, I own an Aspire 5742G and it perfectly runs Windows 10, but I'm having GPU issues. I can't launch any game at all. I contacted NVIDIA and they told me that Acer is the one who decides whether a laptop gets the upgrades or not. I have a GeForce GT 520M and it's on the supported graphic cards list. Isn't it unfair that I can't get the proper driver updates, just because Acer wants so? My PC runs completely fine, why wouldn't I want to upgrade to Windows 10? Isn't there anything I can do about it?

What would be the best way to split (partition) the 750GB Toshiba HDD of my Acer Aspire 5742G laptop? I intend to run Windows 8 Pro 64 bits on it. Currently I go 50/50: one half for system + aplications and one half for file storage. I have also relocated user files on D:. Thank you in advance.

A:Best way to split (partition) my Aspire 5742G 750GB HDD

It will entirely depend on your usage. If you have a lot of very big programs (e.g. Games), you will need a big C partition and half of your HDD may be appropriate. But if you have only normal programs and a lot of data, a 50 to 60GB C partition will suffice. Then more space for the data may be better.

The way I use my system I would actually split it in 3 partitions.
1. C with 50GB (I have no games)
2. Data with 100GB (I have only a modest amount on data on the system. Most is on external disks)
3. the rest for images and other diverse uses like virtual partitions.

Has anyone experienced no sound with Windows 7? Running Home Premium 64 bit on an Acer Aspire 5742G. A bit of a search indicates sound issues when people upgrade to 7 from XP etc, but this laptop came with 7 installed already. And there has been sound...sometimes. But more often than not, just no sound.

Troubleshooting doesn't reveal any problems. Apparently everything is "working correctly". So I suppose it could be a hardware fault. Oh and the volume is turned up and not muted

Still under warranty, so gonna go that route, but just wondering if anyone else may have come across this particular issue - and if so, how'd you fix it? I suppose downloading latest drivers could be a solution.

A:No sound with Windows 7 Home Prem. x64 on Acer Aspire 5742G

Does this have an HDMI port? Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound panel playback. Your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device. If you have HDMI and the HDMI is set that would be why you are not hearing any sound on the PC's speakers. Same way if you have an S/PDIF digital output and it was selected, that would disable any speaker sound.

I got an Acer Aspire One off of woot.com about 2-3 months ago. Often I leave it turned on next to my bed playing video or music when I go to sleep. Then I might forget to turn it off the next morning due to being in a rush. That night I'll go back to the netbook and it will be off.

I have it set to hibernate and have come upon it in hibernation now and then.... but usually it's just plain off.

Does anyone have any clue what could be up? I don't see any power setting on here that turns it off, and even if there was one that wouldn't make sense considering the times when it actually is hibernating later.

Also it isn't due to the battery dying, as it does this when the netbook is still plugged in.

Thanks for any help / suggestions, it just gets a little annoying when I leave something open for later and come back later to find it gone.

Hi everyone, a little while back the power pin of my Acer Aspire 5050 laptop came loose so it couldn't get power. I let it sit a while and just got around to ordering a replacement part. Now the laptop gets power but it turns off quickly. I've noticed that it turns off faster after consecutive attempts. (First time maybe 5 to 8 seconds then it just turns off a couple seconds after you try to start it.) The fan starting going hard before going off. I would have liked to experiment a little more and do more trials but I was afraid I might damage something. I have tried this with both the cable and the battery together and each separately. It doesn't make a difference. Thank for reading, any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

After getting a couple blue screens I am having the following issue:

When I turn my computer on, the fans and drives all start up. After approx. 2 seconds the computer shuts itself off. After another 2 seconds the computer turns itself back on again. This time it stays on but i have no monitor output. I don't hear a beep which tells me it is probably not posting.

I have read a few other threads that have a similar issue but not the same. I am thinking it is either the mobo, GPU, or PSU.

I would like any guidance and assistance that you guys can give me on this specifically what i should look at first and how to diagnose. Thanks. system specs below:

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896-P3-1265-AR Video Card
Antec EA650 650W Power Supply
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Memory

A:Computer turns on, turns off then turns back on but has no video output

Motherboard Short

I have helped somebody who had a similar issue and it was the motherboard being shorted out by the case. We took the motherboard out of the case and it booted up just fine. Something you might want to try before purchasing new components.

I'm going to experiment on an Aspire 5742G that has the nVidia graphics.  But the graphics are switchable.  So seeing as the I7 has no graphics capability on its own, like the i3 and i5 do,  I figure that a change to the bios to set the nvidia graphics always on should work.   Sound like a plan?   I know the downside will be short battery life, and probably a screaming fan trying to keep everything cool, but what the heck, its a 6 year old laptop.  That and I'm just dying to get a quad core into one of these things to see how it will perform.  I have a spare motherboard and a few i5 chips as backup too. I own a computer repair service, and often install i5 580M chips in the Aspire line where possable over the Pentium and i3's.  A nice upgrade. I did put in a Intel Quad-Core i7 740QM @ 1.73 GHz Processor (SLBQG) in a 5742 with intel graphics and although it started and loaded windows, unfortunately the screen was blank.  (note to self: Duh.). So, in a few days I'll be into the 5742G and let you know whats going on. PS...  Does anyone know how to get to the old pages that list all the build options for a particular model? Thanks!  Mark.

Hello,I own an Acer Aspire 5742G laptop and I wanted to upgrade the RAM memory so I purchased 2x4gb RAM modules. The type of the modules is the following:TeamGroup 4GB DDR3L 1333MHz 1.35V CL 9-9-9-24(TED3L4G1333C9-SBK) However, after installing them, the OS would not boot, or the computer would restart. I tried each module separately or combined with one of the old memory modules but no combination would work. I have read in the internet and in this forum other cases of RAM modules not working with 5742G, however I do not quite understand why these modules would have some compatibility issue. I contacted Team Group and they claim that there seems to be some damage and I should replace the modules, but I doubt that this is the case, especially since it is unlikely that both of them are damaged. Has anyone had any experience with these modules, or does anyone have any clues or suggestions on what to do or try? Thanks.

A  bios update could possibly help. Bios updates are always risky. If something goes wrong, you could have a bricked laptop. On the other hand, bios updates are posted to fix things that are wrong. Download the newest Bios file (if there are more than one, the newest contains everything in the others) and extract it to a new folder on your desktop. Make sure you are plugged in and the battery is charged.Open the folder, double click on the Bios file and don't do anything unless told to. Befare you do it, Open a command prompt as Administrator and type sfc /scannowLet it run and see if it finds anything. When it's done, type chkdsk /f It will say it need to reboot  Say Yes.

It also might be a cable issue. Inspect that cable or try a new one and or another USB port. If you have it on the front of the case try it on a rear USB port. I've seen machines where the front ports carried less power than the rear ones.

I then purchased an evga 1060 sc and attempted at installing it into my pc. After installing it I started up my pc and it turned on. The fan for the gpu didn?t spin so I turned off my computer, opened the case, unplugged the 6 pin then plugged it back in. I turned on my pc again but it made an odd sound before the power button flashing orange then completely shutting off. Now every time I turn it on the light turns orange and the fans spin for a split second then they stop. Any assistance will be much appreciated...

Hi,
I'm having trouble with two of my desktops.
Desktop #1 Problem:
When all cords and such are plugged in, I press the power button. The desktop turns on for about 1-2 seconds and then restarts. The bios doesn't flash, the os doesn't boot. As far as I can tell the desktop restarts indefinitely. Any ideas what's going on here?
--Desktop Type: HP Pavilion a705W
I found someone with a similar problem here

Desktop #2 Problem:
I bought some 3M Dust Remover a few days ago. I disconnected power, along with everything else, from a desktop of mine. Pulled the cover off and started blowing the dust out of the case. I put everything back together, plugged it in, and the desktop doesn't work. It boots to a blank screen with the the power and hard drive led's stuck on, on the front of the desktop. The led on the back of the power supply turns on, I can hear the hard drive spin up, it detects the cd/dvd drives, floppy drive and then just hangs with the led's stuck on. Anyone have an idea what might be going on here?
--Desktop Type: Compaq Presario S4200NX

Thanks for the help, I'm hoping to get atleast one of these back online w/o buying a whole new desktop.

A:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Trying to build a system for my brother. I put the 3200+ Athlon XP CPU in and with the heatsink. It turns on for maybe a few seconds and then turns off.

People were saying heatsink but I have tried it on 2, one is the ALK-800A, then some CoolerMaster one. I have to admit the CoolerMaster was originally from my 2100+ setup but still, it's all copper.

I do notice when I remove the CPU, it stays turned on. I know pretty sure this CPU works as I tested like hours before I put it in my brothers. Cant do that now since it was a quite a drive back home from college.

Jumpers? Settings? Anything?

Referring to a Toshiba Tecra 9100, model no: PT910E-602SF-EN

The power button normally doesn?t turn it on at all, though occasionally it boots up normally, starts to load windows, then always cuts out after 5-15 seconds anyway.

It still charges up the batteries fine, but won?t turn on. I?ve checked the ram, hard-drive, and I re-set the bios to defaults - nothing stops it from cutting out if you can get it to turn on.

Any ideas what could be the problem? Any help appreciated, it?s the second time one I?ve had - the same problem last time!

Thanks

Hey,

Have you already tried cleaning the fan? Maybe a lot of dust is blocking the fan so the notebook can?t start and turns off itself due a higher temperature. It would be worth a try cleaning it.

But in my opinion you have everything done what you can do and it looks like a mainboard malfunction. If cleaning the fan doesn?t help I think the mainboard is defective or something else. If you are familiar with notebook disassembling you can try to repair it yourself with second hand parts. Otherwise it?s time for a new notebook I think?

I HAVE READ OTHER SIMILAR THREADS ------ My PC actually has the fans / lights AND can't even get anywhere on the BIOS.

4gb ram
7950 GT
3.44 GHz Intel Pentium D
250gb HD
1 CD ROM
Foxconn P35A (mobo)
My mom took my PC away from me, I got it back and it is retarded now.
I start the PC, the fans come on, lights are all good, then about 2 -10 seconds it shuts off and then comes back on by itself.

When I turn the power on, the monitor does not show anything at all.

I have tried many of different things:

Different PSU ( problem is not the PSU )

D/C the CD ROM / HD ( so it can't be one of those as a failure )

1 stick of RAM ( my memory is fine )

Checked ALL of my cables, they are connected properly ( checked many of times, unconnected, then reconnected alot )

Replaced the grease between heat sink / CPU ( can't be my CPU or overheating problem )

Heat sink / Fan is properly mounted ( not loose at all and is flat )

All of the aluminum capacitors on the mother board are perfectly fine ( not leaking / and are on proper )

Reset the mother board a few times....

well thats MOST of the stuff I have done, there is probably more but I can't think of what else I have tried at the moment.
And BTW, can't access BIOS so don't ask if I can get into it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you mean you have tried resetting the bios jumper, on the Motherboard?
If not do that.

Also, have you tried disconnecting all HDD; Floppy; CD data cables (from the motherboard end (actually I'd do case fan too and front USB connection to motherboard)
If this works, you will need to put one back in at a time, until you find the problem

Usually this fault is related to faulty Ram or CPU

When I attempt to turn on my computer the power light comes on and I hear the fans running but after a second or 2 the light goes off and the fans stop running, after a count of 2 the light comes on the fans start up again and the same thing happens again, on off on off I don?t have to touch the button the only way I get it to stop is pull the plug from the wall. I thought maybe it was a power supply issue so I replaced this with a new one but I got the same results. Does anyone have an ideas????

A:Computer power issues ! turns on then off turns on then off ...

Dear Customer, Welcome to the HP Consumer Support forum. In order to isolate the issue, please try and perform few basic steps as follows: 1. Open the hood and ensure the 4 or 6-wire power supply cable is seated into the connector on the system board2. Check if a device is causing the problem by removing ALL attached devices (such as hard, diskette, or optical drives, and expansion cards).3. Power on the system.4. If the system enters the POST, then power off and replace one device at a time and repeat this procedure until failure occurs.5. Replace the device that is causing the failure.6. Continue adding devices one at a time to ensure all devices are functioning properly.7. Locate the header and jumper labeled CLR_CMOS8. Remove the jumper from pins 2 and 3.9. Place the jumper on pins 1 or 2.10. Put the jumper back on pins 2 or 311. Replace the access panel12. Reconnect all the disconnected devices one by one and then power on the unit and check if the issue persists. In case issue persists please get back to us and we would be glad to assist you. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again. **Click the KUDOS star on left to say Thanks** Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GR1Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

Hello!

I'm looking for some advice and guidance.
I am not a technical expert on computer hardware. I understand the basics and that's about the extent of it.

My current PC is a Dell desktop/tower; it runs Windows 7; it uses an Intel Core Duo processor. It is a few years old (I'd estimate 3 or 4 years old). I plug my PC into a Belkin surge protector/multi-outlet device, which plugs into the wall electrical outlet.

My problem is that recently the PC randomly has been instantly powering-down and then a few seconds later powering-up again and rebooting. This happens twice or 3 times a day, on average. I have no explanation for it. I do know that it's highly annoying and I'm concerned and want to do something to fix this problem before any permanent damage occurs to my PC.

Last week, I searched the internet briefly for advice, and the two possible causes that popped-up in search results were: A) overheating, or B) issues with the power cord. Given that, over the past week, in my spare time, I have totally rerouted all the cords and wires behind my computer desk, to ensure that no wires were tangling, pulling, or weighing-down on the power cord for my PC. I also totally dusted out the cabinet and backside of the PC tower, and gently vacuumed the "fan" area on the back of the PC, to ensure it was free of dust and lint. I removed some random objects from the PC cabinet (CD's, mice, keyboard, etc.) to ensure that there was plenty of "ai... Read more

Hey guys I need help, during startup Windows Firewall turns off upon system startup and then turns back on a few minutes later, then network connections open up to finish up my bootup process. I have SP3, and this little problem is causing my computer to startup slowly significantly. I have tried scanning for viruses and spyware and have found none, so I really don't know what's causing this to happen.

A:Firewall turns off and upon startup and then turns back on

That's normal, in my experience.

Not just with Windows firewall but any other firewall I've played with...the network connection is the last line of system defense when the system boots.

The firewall won't allow contact with the Internet...until the system is totally setup and out of danger. The firewall activates (along with the other startup items), then the network connection is made.
