I've never bought RAM before, but I'm looking to upgrade. I'm going to get a 64 bit OS and at LEAST 8 gigs of ram. I have a budget of $200.

What do I need to know when purchasing RAM? I know I need DDR3, but is there anything else that's important to know before buying it? Also, is anything more than 8 gigs over kill? Would it be beneficial to get 16? I play a lot of games. What brands would you guys recommend?

Preferred Solution: Buying RAM

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

brands to buy incl' crucial, corsair,Gskill, these have lifetime warranty....... 8 gigs is good 16 is a bit overkill.........your board supports 1600 i would get that..........a 8gig kit (2 x 4 sticks)

Guys, maybe someone's got an idea, if I'm making the right decision here. I'm about to purchase a used, but refurbished Dell Latitude E6540 from 2014 for roundabout 700 Euros. For that kind of money I could easily afford a brand new budget laptop. Thing is, the Dell is quite a powerhouse, a dated one, but still, it's packed with OK specs (I think, or more precisely, guess - I'm not really that much of a tech freak)

It comes with:
Intel Core i7-4800MQ (4x 2,7 Ghz)
15,6'' FHD Display
512 GB SSD
1. Intel HD Graphics 4400; 2. AMD Radeon 8790MQ (2GB GDDR5)
and a 24 months assurance

I use my laptop mostly for editing and rendering (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere and such), slight gaming and research stuff.
Would be great if anyone could help me out with a little hint.

I hope this is the right kind of platform for this sort of questions.

A:Buying a used laptop vs buying a new one

Compared with new, one of the biggest problems I've seen with refurbished laptops is a lousy battery. Another is weight. If you can live with that though, the above looks like it could be a decent buy.

Hi Guys

I am about to buy Intel G4400, Asus H110M-E, and DDR4 8GB 2133.

My questions are:
1. Almost all recommend that 2x4GB are better than 1x8GB. As 1x8 is actually cheaper than 2x4 how much better performance is 2x4? Is it noticable in daily computing instead of in theory or benchmark?
2. Which is better : single rank or dual rank? I tried to google and found the technical explanation but cannot get definite answer. So if 2 model with exact spec with only difference is single & dual rank which to get? The single or the dual rank?

Thank you

A:buying RAM

If it's a known factory-brand computer, you need to advise us what brand name and model name and model number it is.

If it's a custom/home-made computer, you need to advise us the brand name and model number of its motherboard.

At this time, we have no way of knowing what type RAM you need and how much RAM is supported.

You are not forced to update Windows / upgrade to Windows 10.If you are not happy with Windows OS - there are some alternatives like GNU/Linux - Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, etc...You need a new computer only if this one has stopped working, there are some specific issues or your PC is really too old so that it can't run modern OS/applications.

It is time to get a new PC. My present one is coming on 5 years old and is not worth attempting any sort of upgrade. Still runs OK, Win98 but showing its age.

Thinking of getting the new one here.

Looking to choose between the Affordable AMD or Affordable PIV (Intel) basic package as listed with my changes to upgrade / add to customize for my needs.
Want to stay under ~$600-700 for the system. Use my old monitor.

So something like:

300W Mid Tower

Motherboard ???? (What to choose here ????)

512 Ram (Upgrade)

30 GB Hard Drive (Which manufacturer is best ????)

32x12x40x12 CDRW/DVD Comb (Upgrade)

3.5 Floppy Drive

32 MD 3D Video (Should I consider any upgrade ????)

3D Sound Card

10/100 Network

56K Modem/Mouse/Keyboard/Speakers

Of the listed Motherboards which is best? I don't need blinding speed. Only do your typical surfing. Sometimes play some on line games, cards, etc. Thinking the first two choices under each category.

The 30 GB hard drive should be fine for me. I should have a choice between Western Digital, IBM, Maxtor, Seagate. Which should be preferred? Also thinking of adding another hard drive D using the same drive as C in a mobile rack and getting maybe up to 3 additional drives to swap out. 1 for backup, 1 for general storage and 1 as a spare for C. Plan on keeping this system for my typical 5 years. These racks are new, never used, not hot swappable, but that isn't all that important to ... Read more

Sometimes true... but you may find a big anomaly between the X2 and X3. Weird things can happen. Go to the motherboard manufacturer's web site to see if both X3 and X2 are supported. Remember, you have chipset software to worry about as well.

I'm considering buying a new pc - but I'm not gonna put it together myself.
I'm going to buy from Europe, to avoid futher taxation. But i'm not the sharpest person concerning hardware - and i need some help choosing. My budget is at a maximum of 600 euro (inc. operating system), ex. transport.
I'm looking at the following pc at the moment: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-018-OG

I'm going to upgrade the following components;
Graphic Card: AMD Radeon R9, 270X 4gb
HD: To the 1TB HD
And i'm considering upgrading the memory to 16gb from 8gb. (Although I'm not sure I need it)

This pc is going to be used for gaming - and i would like it to support high graphics, without sacrificing speed.
Can this pc support my needs for the time being and should I upgrade my memory?

Best regards, Simon

A:Buying a new pc

If your using the computer for gaming i would recommend upgrading the memory to 16gb. 8gb is fine for most programs but 16gb will make sure your games run properly without causing any slowdowns. I would also recommend upgrading the Graphics Card to a high quality one because pc games have a lot of graphics & not all graphics cards can support it. The rest of the hardware should be fine for your needs.

Hi. My sister, who is even less computer savvy than I am, would like to purchase a new desktop or laptop. I tried to get her to switch to a Mac since I find them much easier to use, but she seems hesitant as they can be quite costly and she isn't familiar with them. All she really needs a computer for is internet, burning CDs, downloading music, word processing, and maybe some basic photo editing. She is looking to spend at the most $1,500 US. I am trying to find information on processors and locate a good computer that will last several years. Any suggestions? I have heard bad things about Dell computers, but not much else in regard to any other brand. I know nothing about processors anymore either.
If anyone has any suggestions that would be fantastic!

A:Buying a new PC

You may get as many different answers as there are readers of your post. Dell lovers/haters, Compaq lovers/haters. In my humble opionion, be sure it has a Pentium processor, preferably Pentium IV.

I also suggest either having one built or ordering one with what you need as "off the rack" computers may have too many things you don't/won't need. For example, I was five states away at a new account and the shipped computer crashed and I had to buy one that had so many options not needed and that conflicted with the proprietary software we use, it took two days to get operational. For instance, five different types of removable storage slots. Sheesh!

I'm sure you will get many suggestions.

Hi everyone

I hope i have posted this in the right place.

Ok well from the title we know what this is about.

I am going to buy a new computer at Easter time and that is just the case an all of its components as i already have a monitor, printer etc. I have a budget of a grand, so i want to get something that will have some potential for the future as i am a poor student and cannot keep buying them.

My brother is an IT manager, his mate is a technical suport guy for a company and i have a mate who works at IBM, so i have had much advice from them that is all different. It is very confusing, so i was hoping for some more confusion here.

I use the PC for computer games and software such as Maya, so i am in a difficult situation where i need something that will work well as a workstation and can play top games. I have been told that AMD are better for games on the whole, but if you want something for both Intel is the better option. I do not know what to get out of a PCI-Express Ati or Nividia card over a workstation graphics card, as i don't know how they run games. My mate at IBM said that it is no point going for DDR2 as some good Kingston or Crosshair DDR ram are just as good and cheaper, but i wonder what would be better in the future. I was even told not to bother with 64 bit Processors as when the new windows does come out it still wont make much difference.

I know i am throwing a lot at you all, but it is just very confusing, so if you could give ... Read more

A:Help on buying a new PC

Hey Matt and welcome to Techspot!

Ignore the rumors about 64-bit CPU. You can get AMD 64 (either socket 754 or 939) you will get best games out of it BUT Intel Pentium 4 2.8C ghz with HT (1mb L2 cache) perform better for multi-tasking and games too. (both socket 478 and 775). If you want a budget gaming pc for under a grand. My suggestion is get Intel Celeron 540. Use a stick or two of 512MB or more Dual-Channel PC3700. <still cheap but strong> CPU and ram should cost you close to between of $275 to $400.

yeah, i have one of those "bundled copies" that won't pass the authentication test. grrrrrrrrr. and microsoft is offering to do me the favor of upgrading for a measly $168. HA! you would think, did they REALLY want all of us to have authentic copies, they'd make a decent offer on the upgrade...not like they're going broke anytime soon. it really galls me to have to pay for something i've already paid for.anyway. i've been shopping the 'net, trying to find a decent price. would someone mind taking a quick look at this:http://www.ivorcom.com/shopping/third_leve...;category_id=77and telling me what "promo" means? i realize it stands for promotional...does this mean the copy will self-destruct after 30, 60, or 90 days??? the price seems awfully good...but i'm sure there's a reason for that. if it will do what i want it to...which is to validate my copy of xp (which, b/t/w, is 2002, and has the sp2 pkg), then i truly see no reason to pay anymore than i absolutely have to. this whole thing is just really, really p***ing me off! if i have to pay a bunch to make microsoft happy (which just does NOT seem to be my job!), then perhaps it's time to get a different browser. after all, since ms sure as hell isn't trying to keep me as a "satisfied customer"...why should i feel any loyalty to THEM??? let me know what you think!

I'm ready to go and buy a big amount of CD-RW

Any brand names or speed in particular you guys recomend it?

A:Buying CDs

The only thing you have to decide is what quality you want to get, and obviously the higher quality the less risk for errors on the recording. As for speed, in my opinion you can buy the slowest speed disks out there and record them at any speed because that really doesn't matter and you don't need to spend all that money on epensive 24x cdr... because they all record at the same speed.

If compatible, which ram would better buy.
Kindly help! thank you

A:Help with buying ram.

Either should be compatible with the motherboard. Both are 1.5V DDR3, with similar timings.

One warning: there can be compatibility issues due to mixing RAM from different makers. It's safest to avoid that. (Costs more, of course.) As it's a desktop motherboard, you may be able to solve compatibility issues by manually setting the RAM timings.

The better buy would be the least expensive. I've not bought any RAM from Transcend, but as far as I know, they're as good as any. I've had good luck with Corsair and Gskill.

According to this thread a Dell Inspiron 1501 can support upto 4GB of RAM (possibly 8GB)

On Dell's official website it says the maximum it can support is 2GB but I believe it can support more, they may not have tested for more.

I currently have W7 64 bit installed on my Dell Inspiron 1501 with 2GB of RAM.

I'm from the UK so could anyone suggest links to where I can buy 4GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM from?

A:Need help buying RAM

I found these:
Cheap Laptops, Tablet PC, and Cheap LED TVs | Ebuyer.com

PC Components, Desktop PCs, Laptops, LCD TVs & Computer Hardware

Aria PC - Computer Hardware, Components, Monitors.. at lowest prices

Laptops, Computers, PC Components, MP3 players, Software, Digital Cameras and more - dabs.com

Overclockers UK - Computer components, hardware & gaming PC

Computer Hardware - Scan.co.uk

I'd also suggest Newegg.com - Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, and More! although I think it's international.
Also, some RAM-Building websites like Corsair's have functions which allow you to choose your country and show you stores of where you can buy(link).
You could just visit any computer hardware store.

PS: I've made some research about what your Inspiron can run, people say it supports 4GB of RAM (2*2), however Dell says it does not, many others are running 8 GB, I think you should try and if it does not work there are money refunds.

Hello, My OEM Norton was about to expire so I purchased NIS 2007. The install went fine, but within hours I was crippled with "Powered by ZEDO", "Rockstar Games" and other Web Buying pop-ups. I hope this will be an easy problem for one of you to spot.

I tried the google toolbar and set IE pop-up filter to HIGH and still got them.

I didn't find the core.sys or core.cache.dsk files, mentioned in several other web sites, anywhere in my system.

I ran a free online scan (kaspersky) and deleted the following files without effect.
C:\\Windows\system32\B1\wr73.exe and some similar empty folders

STEP1: I did not find any of the malware programs listed.

STEP2: Panda ActiveScan disinfected 5 viruses (posted below) and I will soon delete my daugther's cookies when she scribes her various login names

STEP3: Spyware Blaster and IE-spayed both installed fine.

STEP4: No critical updates were identified for my Win XP sp2.

STEP5: DSS load and ran fine, posted below, extra.txt attached.

Thanks for looking, I really appreciate the help. -Ernie.

I consider buying Win 10 Home FPP(not upgrading from older Win) with licence for one computer.
If understand licencing correctly when remove I win10 from one computer(in case of retail lic.) I should be able to install it on another one.
1. Can this be done without calling to Microsoft and explaining them all the details?
2. How many times can this be done without getting into any troubles like expiring licence or calling MS?

In short I want to buy win10 and want to know how many times I can upgrade motherboard or buy a new computer without windows getting me any troubles.

I am currently interested in replacing my current GPU which is a multimedia graphics card for a gaming graphics card.

I am in search for something that is just enough for my system hardware (exceptions Power Consumption, Size of GPU, Card Slot, all these are not important right now hahaha). Something that doesnt bottleneck any other component in my system. Please help me since I have no idea about GPU jargon but also post links of tutorials or guides about understanding the GPU because I am also interested to learn.

PS: I like nVidia =D Thanks in advance guys ^_^

Well. There's the GTX 690? Very expensive but would bottle neck your other components.
I have the GTX 550 ti but if your going for something like that go for the GTX 560 as the performance has a staggering difference.
So either the eVga GTX 550 ti from nVidia.
Or GTX 560 from nVidia.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello Everyone.

My wife needs a new computer. The problem is that she is looking to me for answers. Which 5 years ago i could have done just that.

But everything has changed, and i have been out of the loop so I don't know what is considered good or old.

I have 2 Questions......1. Should she go for a laptop? this way she can be mobile or setup with a keyboard and mouse and be just like a desktop. Problem is I know laptops cost more for the same things you will get in a desktop.

2.We are willing to pay $500, because she is not a gamer or graphic artist. She will just be surfing the net and watching movies.

3. I'm hesitant on getting windows 8, which is on almost every new computer. I would rather it have windows7. Am I wrong?

Thanks in advance for any info you can give me. Oh and one more thing WHERE is the best place to get a good deal. Most are saying BestBuy.

again thank you

I'm about to buy some more RAM to max out my Dell Precision 5500. At the moment I have 48GB loaded and I'm going all the way to 72GB which is what this model tops out at. I think I've identified the right kind of RAM to seal the deal but I just need a final nod from someone who knows better.

The RAM kit I've identified is Kingston Model# KTH-PL313K3/24G. A set of 3x8GB DDR3 Triple channel chips with ECC. My doubt arises from the fact that this RAM seems to be used mostly on servers and not workstations like mine.

Here's a link to the system report I generated using CPU-Z

Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions.

Hi again,
A friend of mine asked me to update his incredibly sluggish computer, and it's obvious for me that he needs significantly more RAM than he has right now.
The said computer has two slots, being one occupied with a 1GB stick.

My question is, should I buy a 2x1GB stick or a 2GB stick (same speeds, but different brand) in order to get optimal performance and stability?
(I still ponder getting 2x2GB, but I don't believe he's willing to pay ?39 for it).

Best regards,

A:Buying some RAM

If his motherboard supports it, I would get two sticks and run them in dual channel. When using ram always match sticks of the same to avoid issues.

I am thinking about getting the 840 EVO for later use when the new computer I will be getting needs a clean iinstall. Sadly, my budget has decreased and I will not have enough money for buying neither a PC from a boutique builder or build it myself. I may just go with the XPS 8700 which is at the edge of my budget. (Now $750 so it is kind of over budget) Since it comes with a HDD, I may buy the 840 EVO before I move to Korea because it is cheaper here even though Samsung is a Korean company for use when either the HDD dies or I have to reinstall Windows. (Or use it as a external drive if none of the above happens before a new SSD comes out and makes the 840 EVO obsolete) Will the chips in the SSD start rotting after time passes? I have heard that this happens to flash drives and since SSD have similar chips, I am worried that the SSD will rot without use. Is it even worth it to buy the SSD this early?

A:Buying a SSD for later use

I'd just buy now when you need one, prices may have even come down by then.

Hey guys,

I've always been a CRT guy. Never liked the fuzziness of the LCDs. However, I'm sure they've gotten better over the years, and with my current monitor clunking out on me, I think I'm ready to make the switch over. Just have a few questions...

This is one I've come across that seems like a winner:

With a 2ms response time, will I see any ghosting in games? That is my biggest concern. Secondly, how would the colour/contrast be? LCD always seemed so dull looking to me; how would this one compare to the crispness of a CRT?

Also, I notice there is no DVI cable included. I do appear to have a DVI port on my Radeon 9600, so would want one of those (as long as I could notive a difference). How much do they go for, and what type would I need?

Finally, just so I can make an informed decision, is there a new flat screen technologie emerging? I notice laptops at school that have screens with REALLY clear images. Much brighter than anything I'm used to seeing on a flatscreen. And the picture quality is just as good from all angles, which is another thing that bothered me about LCDs in the past. Is this LCD technologie, or more something like this:

If it is new technologie, what's it called? An how long before it starts dropping in price?... Read more

I am buying ram for my new computer, and I'm trying to figure this all out. Its been about 5 years since I last built a computer so I'm a bit out of the loop on how things work.

Basically, I'm looking at a motherboard that has a max RAM capacity of 8GB, it has 4 slots (the GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 mobo) and whats got me confused is how the RAM works. I'm not familiar at all with dual channel RAM. Basically, will 4 sticks of dual channel ram be able to be installed in it? I want to order RAM that says its a "Dual-Channel Kit" so that makes me wonder, can I buy 2 of these "kits" and put both sets in my single mobo?

I hope my question was clear enough. Also, the motherboard has 4 RAM slots, but I wasn't sure if I needed to buy the "Quad-Channel kit" or if that was just fancy for 4 ram sticks.

Thank you for any help!

My brother-in-law is in the market for a new p.c.
He went to Besy Buy to shop around - found a comp he likes. The sales guy told him that he needs a surge protector with a backup battery that will run the p.c. for 30 minutes in the event of a power failure.

He also said that with new computers a regular surge protector is not enough. He said the warranty will be void if he does not buy the battery backup surge protector. He said all new 2.* processor computers need this feature.

Is this true? I have never heard of such a thing. I am curious if the sales man is handing my Bro-in-law a line of crap.

Sorry if this is the wrong area to ask this type of question, but it seemed appropriate to me.

Thanks for the info.

i am thinking about purchasing a new dvd rom drive, because i only have a cd rom. i am fairly helpless when it comes to computers, but i want to know if it is difficult to install the dvd rom drive myself or if i should pay for someone to do it for me. also any recommendations on what dvd rom to buy? help would be greatly appreciated.

A:im buying a dvd rom...

DVD roms are very inexpencive.. This Sony http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=172460 is only $26. I might suggest going ahead and getting a DVD-RW drive if you are going to upgrade. You can get a Sony for under $50 through ZipZoomFly or NewEgg. Something like http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=172472 for $39.99. It may come in handy someday if you ever want to back up some pictures/music/files.

As for installation, you just need to plug it in just like your old CD-Rom was. Its pretty easy to see once you crack open your case. The pins only fit one way on the device, so its hard to mess that up.. and Windows should recognize the new device and load the drivers for you.

Good luck!
