Solved: Windows OpenSSH Problems

Q: Solved: Windows OpenSSH Problems

I did a search, but didn't quite see anything posted that might relate to my problem.

At one point early last year I installed OpenSSH on an xp business box I have at home. I set it up so that it was an automatic server that would start when the box turned on. I used Putty on my laptop, and through port forwarding on my WRT54G v8 router, I had it all working perfectly and could connect using Putty on my laptop to have a tunnel to my home comp. Last week the hard drive died and I just bought a new one to put in it, and went through the process of re-installing XP. I then reinstalled OpenSSH, put in all the same settings as it had before (detailed notes from when I did it the first time) and fired up Putty and it wouldn't connect. I thought maybe it was the box, so I tinkered and tweeked to no avail. The only firewall I have running is the XP, and I added OpenSSH and it's ports to the firewall exceptions. The ports are forwarded correctly on my router, and everything in Putty looks ok. After still more timed out connections I opened the routers incoming log and noticed that there were no requests to the port I have OpenSSH set to. I thought that this was odd, as I also have PCAnyWhere installed, and it works perfectly, and I can see in the log the incoming requests for that. So now I am stumped. I have tried Putty on 3 different computers, using three different connections, and still nothing. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to setup OpenSSH on XP and near the end I am getting kind of lost. I will post the tutorial and what I need help with below.
Tutorial: http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html
8) important Pop a cygwin gwindow, harmonize Windows user information with cygwin, otherwise they cannot login
mkpasswd -cl > /etc/passwd
mkgroup --local > /etc/group

If your XP logs on to a domain, you most likely have to manually edit /etc/group. See this page.

If your XP logs on to a domain, you may want to edit /etc/passwd to replace /home/username by //unc_server/path_to_home
(thanks to Geoff Thomas)

mkpasswd creates a password file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
mkgroup creates a group file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
Thanks to John Skiggn of Cingular Wireless in Redmond, Washington for his tweak on domain user /etc/group

What was the last step on the tutorial that you did? Also, is the PC you're using in a domain?

ok Ive been studying this ssh service. Im running Fedora Core 3 and it is active on my machine...........or at least a "pgrep ssh and pgrep sshd" command show it running and the ssh daemon is listed as active in my list of active services.

My question is........if it is running on my linux box does the other windows boxes within my network have to be running it to connect to me?

If so or if not....how do I configure this thing? The information that I have found about it so far reads like stereo instructions in another language. I really need some help here!

There are two related vulnerabilities in the challenge response handling code in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3. They may allow a remote intruder to execute arbitrary code as the user running sshd (often root). The first vulnerability affects OpenSSH versions 2.9.9 through 3.3 that have the challenge response option enabled and that use SKEY or BSD_AUTH authentication. The second vulnerability affects PAM modules using interactive keyboard authentication in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3, regardless of the challenge response option setting. Additionally, a number of other possible security problems have been corrected in OpenSSH version 3.4.

Running Win XP MCE SP2
Cable connection
motorola surboard modem
linksys router

A few weeks ago I installed openssh on my computer using http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/download/. I set up the group and passwd files, followed the instructions etc. Forwarded port 22 from my router to my computer and configured my firewall (zonealarm) to let traffic through. Everything worked fine until I screwed something up and had to format my hard drive. I've been trying to setup openssh the same way I did when it worked and I just can't get it to work. I've tried turning off the firewall and also connecting the modem directly to the computer, it just won't work. I have the user accounts setup with passwords. When i use putty to connect to my computer from that computer things work out but outside computers can't connect to it. I open putty, tell it to connect to my ip at port 22 using ssh and it brings up the connection window and asks me for a username, which I type in, and then it immiately asks for a password without showing the welcome/warning message it's supposed to show. When I type in the password, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then simply tells me "Access Denied".

Any suggestions? Any diagnostic tools or anything of that sort I can use to figure out what the problem is?

The CERT/CC has received confirmation that some copies of the source code for the OpenSSH package were modified by an intruder and contain a Trojan horse.

We strongly encourage sites which employ, redistribute, or mirror the OpenSSH package to immediately verify the integrity of their distribution.

An intruder operating from (or able to impersonate) the remote address specified in the malicious code can gain unauthorized remote access to any host which compiled a version of OpenSSH from this Trojan horse version of the source code. The level of access would be that of the user who compiled the source code.

Hi folks,

today I setup Cygwin and OpenSSH on my rented server. I following the usual direction and everything seemed to be fine.

I tested locally using ssh localhost und voila - connection, login, everything fine.

Then I tried to login from my laptop and got no connection. I checked the firewall - and it was off. Both the server provider's firewall and the local windows firewall were off (I turned them on afterwards, however).

Ok, I thought, let's connect locally, so I tried ssh <hostname> and ssh <server-ip> (On the server itself!). Could not connect.

I tried a lot of combinations, changed the port, used ListenAddress to explicitly bind to the local ip, looked at hosts.allow and hosts.deny etc. Actually one can see slight differences with netstat -a, but the effect remains the same: Using localhost and I can connect, but not using the IP.

Server OS is Windows Web Server 2008.

Any ideas?

Thanks for hints or any idea how I can debug this. SSH debug mode shows no output, so it really seems no connection gets established.

A security vulnerability found in a widely-used open-source software has been described as "the most serious bug."
A major vulnerability has been found and fixed in OpenSSH, an open-source remote connectivity tool using the Secure Shell protocol. The flaw was the result of an "experimental" feature that allows users to resume connections
According to a mailing list disclosing the flaw, a malicious server can trick an affected client to leak client memory, including a client's private user keys.
The affected code is enabled by default in OpenSSH client versions 5.4 to 7.1. The matching server code was never shipped, the mailing list said.
The flaw doesn't have a catchy name like some other previous flaws, but disabling client-side roaming support fixes the issue.
The flaw, which is said to be years old, was found by Qualys' security advisory team.
Wolfgang Kandek, chief technology officer at Qualys, confirmed in an email that the company disclosed the bugs to the OpenSSH team on January 11, and commended the team for working "incredibly fast" to get a patch out three days later.

"Developers and admins are advised to regenerate and rotate keys to systems they touch, whether for hobby [or] weekend projects, or more sensitive servers -- including Github," he added.
Bottom line? Patch now, and patch fast.

About 2-3 days ago, I downloaded the windows 7 64 bit updates. After the re-boot, some of my programs I use kept asking "do you want to change your system", or something like that. I never got that before because I loaded these programs myself.
Today, 12/12, I received one new update to MS windows 7 that took about 10 minutes to download and install. I re-booted, and now everything is fine. I think MS forgot, or coded the update wrong.
Does anyone know what happened, or did anyone experience this same problem? I have a Dell XPS.

I’m using Windows Media Player version 12.0.7600….. and the Win7 Enterprise free 90 day eval.

I have an mpg2 file captured from VHS using a Diamond USB capture device. I want to play the mpg file on WMP in Win7 but it hangs giving me the spinning donut forever. Never exits, no error msg and I have to off WMP from the Device Mgr by killing the process. I clicked on the mpg icon and selected "play with WMP..."

I get same results trying to play it directly from a DVD it's burned to in ISO format.

To play the mpg file, I had to use a free program called Gomplayer which does the job, but I still think WMP should be able to get the job done.

After burning the mpg to a DVD+R disc in DVD video format (.vob files) with Nero ( plays fine on the TV), I tried to play this disc on WMP with same result. This all works great on XP. What gives?
Is WMP 12 supposed to play these formats on Win7? Is my WMP corrupt?

Not quite sure where to start....
I'm trying to help a friend who is, shall we say, somewhat less than computer literate.....

he has a ZT brand computer running Windows XP Professional, Service pack 2. I helped him set the machine up a couple of years ago, but it was never correctly configured to run Windows Updates. He is now have some issues, running low on virtual memory, which really surprises me as he doesn't have much more open than Word documents.

I tried to manually run Windows update for him this evening, it fails to install the Windows Genuine Advantage update, I downloaded Service pack 3, tried to run that, and it failed to install as well, came up with an error referencing the update.inf file.

The computer was factory installed with Wave System's Embassy Trust Suite, which I'm sure is not necessary, but it won't go away despite several tries to uninstall it from add/remove program, (even though it tells me it has uninstalled)

the program tcsd_win32.exe is always running, (is that part of Wave System's Embassy Trust Suite?)

I've run Malwarebyte's Antimalware and it found 4 minor problems, did not require a reboot, and he uses AVG anti-virus and Zone Alarm.

I'd at least like to get him to a point where the Operating system is up to date, I'm unsure how to get there. I work 9 to 5, so I can really only get time on his machine on my way home from work.

Any idea how to get this moving? I hope this is the correc... Read more

I've recently run in to several problems with my computer, possibly hardware related. A few days ago an error appeared randomly with the message "taskkill.exe - Unable To Locate Component This application has failed to start because framedyn.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." To fix this problem I checked both the dllcache and wbem folders for framedyn.dll, but found it was in both locations as it should be. Later the same day, the monitor was discolored (even on startup before the windows logo appeared) and had flashing, glitchy green and yellow lines. To attempt to solve this problem, I reseated the video card, changed the cable connecting the video card to the monitor, and tested different monitor settings, all to no avail. While this problem was still occuring, windows ran CHKDSK automatically upon the next startup. Yesterday, the monitor returned to normal on its own, but web browsers were loading slowly, and video games would not run properly. I ran an AVG Free 2012 full computer virus scan yesterday, as well as system diagnostic tools from Avanquest Fix-it Utilities 11 for the video card, monitor, motherboard and Hard Drive. Then I ran a SMART Disk Check. All of these revealed no problems. Fix-It Utilities 11 prompted me to optimize the system for performance, and after the optimization reported that 286 registry errors had been fixed. I am unsure where to go next as 3 problems still persist- slow or crashing video games,... Read more

Download the ISO image for Seatools and Memtest separately in my signature. Separately burn these Images to CD using IMGBurn in my signature. Boot off of the Seatools disc, run the short and long tests on the drive. This may solve the problem, but if either tests fail the HDD will need to be replaced.
After that is done, remove all but one stick of RAM and boot off of the Memtest CD and run the tests on each stick of RAM separately. If there are any errors (Red) this stick needs to be replaced.

Hiya Guys and Gals,

My first post on the forum and I hope someone out there can help me with my problem.

Been fixing a friend pc for over a year now, and when I say fixing, I mean re-installing Windows on his pc every second month because for some or other reason his pc just loses or corrupts his system files EVERY month or two. Now I strongly believe it is a ID10T error, but I can't prove it.

Anyway, this week he brought me his pc again, Windows XP would not go past the start-up screen. It brings up the XP loading screen, goes black and then goes no further.

I have tried running a "repair" and a "chkdsk /P /R" from the XP cd, but it did not fix the error. Had to re-install AGAIN. Did the clean install, everything running smoothly, great. Or so I thought. Powered down on Tuesday night, restarted on Wednesday evening and the pc can't load, one of my system files is lost or corrupted. Tried running a repair and chkdsk again, but nothing. Now it just won't start at all.

Could it possibly be a harddrive issue?

Anyone have an idea what could be causing this, because I am ready to toss his machine off a very high cliff!

Any help would be appreciated.

Amd Athlon 64 x2 4600 2.41ghz 2gb ram
I have 3 problems

reboot frequently after initial screen-screen goes black but nothing appears on the screen-we do see the hdd going thru motions but nothing appears on the screen

We keep rebooting & eventually we get Windows to respond

My other problem is that often we will shut down a program and receive message that program has encountered an error and will be shut down even although program has already shut down successfully-error oxc0000005

We also encounter when loading certain programs we get black screen also and have to reboot a number of times to get the program to work

It appears that all of these things are related and even before we updated to windows xp sp3 we had this problem in windows xp sp2

Hi Everyone!

New to the forum, and am wondering if any of you can help with a few problems I am having.

First a little rundown of the computer. This computer is not mine, it's a friend of mine's, and needs to be fixed due to my error.

Gateway Model # MA3
AMD Turion 64 mobile
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows XP Media Edition Version 2002
1.58 Ghz
960 MB RAM

This notebook is a DINOSAUR compared to the ones I am used to fixing! As you can see, the Service Pack is way outdated! Here are the problems I have been having with it:

1. First off, I tried to do a system restore because disk defragmenter and disk cleanup were not in system tools like they should have been, and there seemed to be a myriad of other problems as well. Someone else she found off the internet before she met me apparently TRIED to fix it, but I think they screwed it up and gave it back to my friend (who is not computer literate whatsoever!) She didn't know any better!

I didn't realize the computer was not plugged in while doing the system restore. It shut off during, due to low battery. Then I was forced to the basic installer (where you set it up originally and I think it reset to factory settings) and basically all of the pics (irreplaceable baby pics that were not backed up!!), files ect. were nowhere to be found after that! This has never happened to me before, so I'm not sure how to get the files back. I'm sure they are there, but hidden because it says there is 95.8 G... Read more

I actually have a number of problems. I'm not sure if they are related, but in case they are, I will include all of them. If someone is able to fix one of them singly, I will create new threads for the others. Listed by priority, the problems are:

1. Windows update will not update important updates (multiple attempts.... multiple) error code 80070005
2. MSE does not install, error 0x800B0003
4. Lavasoft Ad-aware will not open
3. Windows Media Center does not open (under normal functions, will open if I run as administrator, but then doesn't work)

I am running Vista x32. The problem seems to have started after installing an update, but I tried system restore to before the update with no results.

I appreciate any attempts to getting these problems resolved.

After running SFC, I checked the log file and found three files that could not be repaired: Photo.gmmp, montr_ci.dll and msisip.dll. I was able to manually repair msisip.dll and was able to get MSE to install. The other problems still remain, however.

My Windows installer program is not working properly. It does not display an error message,it simply will go thru most of the installation and then it displays: Theres a problem with the Windows Installer Package. It also occurred when I tried to update Java. Here is my system info:

I recently upgraded from Vista Ultimate 64-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have a problem with the resolution now. The monitor I use was supported in Vista for resolution 2560x1600 but now the highest I have is 1280x800. I can't get it any higher, when I go back to Vista /same Dual-link cable, same monitor, same PC/ it shows 2560x1600 correctly, once I go Windows 7 - it only displays 1280x800. I have tried every driver update /Dell monitor3007WFP, ATI Radeon HD6950/ but nothing helps. I first thought its my monitors' driver problem but after I researched online, it seems that many people have same problems with the resolution once they go Windows 7 /no matter the pc or monitor brand/. Can you please help? I would appreciate any help in being able to run this at 2560x1600 resolution.

Thank you Katarina

I would appreciate one of you great tech guys to look at my hijack this log. I am running windows xp, second editon, version 2002 with service pack 3. I mainly use mozilla firefox 3.6 but also yahoo. I do use Yahoo email and my toolbar that I use to get to my mail keeps disappearing. Another problem is that I will be looking at a web page and then for no good reason the web page shuts down. My system is running too slowly. Is AVG 9 a good product or would I be better off buying a higher grade virus checker. I sent in a hijack log about three months ago and was told how to compare the programs that I have running to a web site that tells you what the program is for. I worked on this a bit but it was just taking me too long. If someone could just list the few programs that need to run on start up that would be great. As always, thanks a bunch. Maggie

I am trying to reinstall Windows Vista, due to a problem I had earlier with it. I'm using the recovery discs sent to me by HP, and I am following the directions they gave me in order to do the reinstallation. After I put the first recovery disc in, Windows says "Windows is loading files ...... " and then the screen appears with the green bar moving back and forth (what the normal startup would be). Then, there is a light blue screen with a mouse pointer. That's it. I can move the mouse, but nothing else will happen. I've been waiting over an hour for the recovery process to start, but nothing is happening.

I pretty much ruled out it being a hardware issue, as Ubuntu works fine on the computer. Does anyone know why the recovery won't start and why the blue screen is there?

Also, I was thinking, is there a difference between a recovery disc and an actual Windows installation disc? Could this be why I am having the problem? Would using a Windows install disc guarantee it will work?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello, I obtained a new computer yesterday and freshly installed Windows 7 (64-bit professional) onto it.

Two problems:
The first is that the fonts in Firefox are disproportionate. To see what I mean, I took two screenshots of a message board, the first in Firefox and the second in Internet Explorer.

I don't think this issue occurs on every website, but it is particularly noticeable on message boards.

The second problem is that some icons on my desktop seem blurred, choppy or pixelated.

The Winamp, Last.FM and Crimson Editor logos suffer from this, and three icons at the bottom right look particularly bad.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

A:[SOLVED] Minor Windows 7 Problems

See if the same disproportional sized font occurs on the same sites when in internet explorer.

And the pixelated icons occure becuase the icon is not meant to be that size.
In xp the icon are smaller so you do not see that pixelation, but in 7 the default size is bigger. There is nothing wrong with your machine that is just the way the icons appear becuase they are zoomed in.
You can change the size of you icons very easily.
click on a blank part of the desktop and then hold the ctrl key. Then while holding the ctrl key scroll with your mouse in and out. In will make icons bigger and smaller.

Hi there!

I have run into a bit of a problem. The other day, my son decided to put a Windows XP disc into my computer. As he was play around, he accidently started the setup feature. He got nervous, and pulled the disc out somewhere during the process. Now, every time I start the computer, I get 3 seconds to decide whether I want to continue Windows setup, or start Windows regularly. If I don't catch it, it will put me in the XP setup process.

How can I stop this from happening, without going through the setup process?
