Toshiba C655D-S5084 Powers On But Has Black Screen

Q: Toshiba C655D-S5084 Powers On But Has Black Screen

Hi everyone!

My friend has a Toshiba C655D-S5084 that she gave to me to look at to see if I could fix it. Whenever you power it on the indicator lights shine but however it seems the screen doesn't want to turn on. I've troubleshooted the computer by doing all I know. Such as removing the battery and draining the excess life in the computer, cleaning the RAM cartilages (also checked to see if it were by chance the RAM themselves), and as far as to dissembling the computer to see if the flex cables had by chance came unhooked. Everything seems to be hooked up and wired just fine. Just no screen display. The fan will turn on after several minutes of the computer idling.

Hope we can work things out!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I opened my laptop, pushed the power button, the green power light came on, but my screen did not come on. I have researched and tried several troubleshooting steps, but nothing is working. I now have my battery removed, the power chord attached, and have it hooked-up to another monitor. I turned on the laptop, got the green light, heard it running, and the monitor said "no video." Where do I go from here? Is there anything else I can do before I have to bring it somewhere and pay someone to tell me whats wrong?

I had a previous thread about the same problem back in May of this year about my screen going black. I replaced the screen with a new one and everything seemed to be fine until a few days ago. Opened lid and screen was gone. So far I've done basic troubleshooting to try and figure out what the problem was. Last time I was able to connect a monitor to the laptop and use it, this time that isn't working. I've drained the power supply by removing the battery & plug holding power for 30sec and trying to restart. I've also checked the memory this time, removed old and put in a new set, still nothing. The diagnosis I've come up with is that it may be the video card which I know is integrated onto the motherboard. One thing I did notice is that it's taking a while for the fan to pick up and come back on and it came on when I closed the lid. It does not shutdown now when the lid is closed. Sorry for such a long description of the problem, I just wanted to be as detailed as possible and get some kind of feedback as to what this might be. Thank you

Well, I accidentally dropped my laptop...on my foot no less. The screen worked for some time afterwards, however started to flicker and just recently went completely black. I took the screen apart and saw no damage. The screen is NOT cracked or damaged in anyway. I can shine a flashlight on the screen and see my desktop just fine. Now when I open the lid, it will stay on for just a few seconds, but goes black. The problem? I'm confused. Is there a part for the screen that I can simply replace? or do I have to buy a completely new screen? It seems like a waste since my screen isn't cracked or damaged, just the back light is gone. There is no inverter in this model so that is not the issue, it is all LED. I'd appreciate any feasible answers to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance

if your happy to take it apart. You could try reseating the cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. Long shot but it may just have been dislodged when you dropped it. If your not comfortable take it to a shop

Hi, A family member gave me a Toshiba C655d-S5126 because it stopped working. It turns out that the power adaptor was
no good, So I bought a new one. I plugged it in and it worked, When I checked the battery level it was about 70%
plugged in and charging. The orange light was on, but the battery was discharging, 20 minutes later it turned off and
would not power on again, So I bought a new battery, thinking the original would not hold a charge. When I tried the
new battery the laptop turned on, The new battery had about 50 or 60% charge on it. So I plugged in the new AC
adaptor, But it did the same thing, windows 7 said it was plugged in and charging but the battery discharged to 0% and
the laptop turned off and wont turn on again. Could it be the charging circuit is fried?.. I have 3 other laptops
Acer, Samsung and HP, and they all turn on with or without the battery. The AC adaptor on the Toshiba is used just to
charge the battery, Not to power the laptop. Not a very good move by Toshiba...

Sounds like the power jack inside the laptop. this is something that can be tested with a multi-meter, and replaced if you are willing to open up the laptop.

Ok here is my problem last week I bought this aforementioned laptop. I blew away the 64bit Windows 7 Home Edition it had on it and installed the 32bit Windows 7 Ultimate.

The problem I am having is that the audio that comes through the speakers sucks with certain things like Windows Media Player when I am watching dvds or downloading movies or Tv shows. When I do this you can barely hear the audio. On the other hand if I plug in my earphones the audio is perfect and I get crystal clear HD quality audio.

The codecs I am currently using are the Windows 7 Shark 007 codecs.

Problem I am running into now is finding suitable drivers. When I go to Toshiba to download drivers:

Model Content Page

all that I get is drivers for a 64bit system when I actually need their 32 bit versions.

With that said can some help me find the appropriate and latest 32 bit audio drivers for this system. Also if anyone has anymore ideas as to what might be wrong here I am all ears and would appreciate your input.

With that said thanks in advance for your help.

A:Need help with a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5041

First question, why did you install the 32 bit OS, other than to get the Ultimate version? 32 bit apps run fine on 64 bit OS. If Toshiba does not have 32 bit drivers you may be stuck with what you have now.

I downloaded a blue tooth driver but that did not show any wireless connections to my router.

I recently tried to turn on my computer. It appears to power up, but there's nothing on the screen. I tried running the LCD test (power + D) and see the flashing colors so screen appears to be working.  Tried to run the POST (?) test (power + Fn) and can hear lots of beeping, but I cannot see anything on the screen. At one point early on, I must have pressed something to turn on the verbal assistance, because it was reading to me. That has stopped, though. Any suggestions for a fix?  I'm on a work trip overseas, so I'm not able to hook it up to an external monitor to see if that works.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

trouble started today... fan was whining so checked it and rebooted, got some bad beeps(7 then 1 long 2 short i think), rebooted again and it booted fine but fan was barely turning so powered off and bought new fan, put it in... started booting, fan started, it was checking drives and then just powered off...

took the opportunity to get new case and power supply and put everything together again... same problem

disconnected all but the motherboard... same problem

would love to hear that this could be something other than a fried mobo...

A:no boot, black screen, powers itself off

Sounds to me that you have a short circuit that is grounding your MoBo (where it shouldn't be grounded)

make sure that you did not install any standoffs where they don't belong. remove your mobo from the case, verify that your standoffs are in the right spots for your mobo and form factor. the holes that your mobo should have mounting screws in will have a metal ring around them, if it doesn't, then dont use a mounting screw or metal standoff there (you can use a plastic standoff if you want)

before reinstalling the mobo, try "table testing" it first...boot up without mounting it in your case to verify that everything works before installing it

My son has a Lenovo G580 running Win 8.  He uninstalled McAfee AV which completed and indicated a reboot was required. He rebooted and Win 8 did not start.  Has a black screen.  Power lights come on and I can hear the fan running.  When powering up, there is a quick noise from the DVD drive being engaged, but then no other noise -- just the fan.
I was going to try to use a recovery disk, but he does not have one.  Can one be created using a Win 7 machine?

A:Laptop powers up to a black screen

It's a good point about using the Windows 7 system repair disk for Windows 8. I do not know if that has been tried before or even if it is possible. Both use the BCD store for booting. But because this happened after Mcafee was uninstalled, I think it has affected more than just the boot files. I googled and found other people had the same problem of a blank screen after an uninstall.
Try the following first.
Remove the power cord and battery. Press the power button for 30 seconds. Attach the power cord but leave the battery out. Power up the computer.
Are there any files that need to be recoverd from the laptop?
Levono has a button that will start the factory reset process. It's called the NOVO button and looks like a little arrow. I am not sure where it is on your computer but if you do a factory reset, all files that were put on the computer after purchase will be deleted so do not do this until you have recovered all of your files.

So my laptop powered on and I hear the fan and everything sounds normal, up until when the option to type in my password should appear. At first, there was no screen to type in my password. Now, there's the Windows logo, but the cursor doesn't move and there's no box to type in my password.

I tried a quick google and people suggested unplugging the adapter, taking out the battery, and pressing the ON button for 15-60 seconds. I did that and all it did was have the Windows logo pop up. I've tried booting it in safe mode, but nothing shows up.

So I tried step 3 from this page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03518165&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en but pressing F10 didn't take me to the BIOS settings. The only option was to press enter, and it led me to options such as system restore or fixing the hardware.

Now this lets me see the screen perfectly fine, so what's going on? I can only see the screen here, but not on normal boot up or safe mode. I tried a system restore but that did not work. I'm currently in the VAIO Recovery Center and I ran a Quick Test and nothing was wrong. So I just did a "hard disk verify and repair" and it said it found something wrong but repaired it. I just restarted and still nothing, just a black screen with the Windows logo, no box to type in my password and the cursor can't move.

Do I need to get something replaced or what? Oh and this laptop is about 5 years old. If I nee... Read more

What operating system to you have? Windows 7? 8?

It sounds like the hardware is functioning, but something for Windows is corrupt. I had the exact same problem on a computer a couple of weeks ago.

I had a Windows on my flash drive, plugged it in, and choose to use startup repair to fix the problem. Ironically in my case, it said it failed, but it did fix the problem.

If you don't have a Windows disc, in your recovery settings, you should be able to choose startup repair. Sounds like upon booting the computer, you have to press enter. Not sure where to go from there on your computer. Can you provide all the options you see from that screen or see if you can find? Also, what is the make and model of your pc?

We have an issue where some of our E431 devices will power on but the screen will remain black. If we let things sit for awhile and try to boot again it may come up just fine. There are no beep notifications during POST. When it boots fine the ThinkPad logo appears and will go on to the OS. If we restart or shutdown the computer may or may not boot. Has anyone had an issue similar to this and what did you do to correct the issue? We have tried replacing screens, mother boards, new hard drives, and swapping memory but cannot pinpoint what is causing the issue. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hello anyone who can help!

I have a Lenovo Laptop Thinkpad Edge E520 8GB RAM, Intel CPU B960 Pentium Processor 2.2GHZ

Recently when I have powered up my laptop it occasionally doesn't load properly, the screen stays black. You can hear the laptop working fine but you cannot see anything.

This happens once or twice a week, I usually hold on the power button for 5 seconds, then reboot and it resumes my hibernate settings as usual

Could this be because I always hibernate my laptop?

Can someone please explain what might be causing this problem and how I go about fixing it?

Thanks in advance!

A:Laptop powers on but screen stays black?

Thats a fairly new laptop as i have the edge 530.ive never put any of my computers on hibernate so im not sure if that why its doing that. it sounds like either a power supply problem, a screen problem, or a harddrive problem.or rarely the motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere and have it checked out then you will know for sure and go from there.if you have an external monitor you can try and see if anything shows up on it. if so or even if the other monitor is black i would still start with the screen first as the problem.

I have a HP Compaq 6820S that all of a sudden has stopped working   It had been on unattended for a few hours, and when I came back to it it had frozen with a black screen (I had to hold the power button to turn it off).  Now, when I power it up, the fan kicks in, the caps lock LED flashes on then off, the wireless and power button LEDs stay lit, and the DVD drive continously clicks - but nothing else (screen remains black /off, no beeps, no BIOS/ POST screen). I've tried with hard disk and/or memory removed, and with/without the battery inserted - with the same result as above each time.   EDIT: have also left the battery out for 24 hours too.  When on nothing happens (caps lock/num lock keys don't light up when pressed, wireless LED doesn't go off when pressed).  I've also tried exporting to an external display, again with no luck.  I suspect the motherboard is dead, and it may be new laptop time, but wanted to check here in advance in case anyone has any other suggestions.  Can anyone suggest anything?

Hi there fellas.

I have had my comp for about 3-4 years. I have never had any problems but this week when I turned it on the screen remained black and said "no signal". Obviously there is no output from the graphics card and I have tried a second moniter which also failed. Im almost certain that this is a hardware problem.

When the PC boots up, the LED's on the flash card drives and floppy drive are permenently on. However, when the PC was working these lights would flash briefly and then go off while the boot sequence continued.

I have opened the case and turned the power on. The CPU fan and PSU fan are both spinning but the fan on the graphics card is not. The two DVD drives both work but there is still nothing on the screen.
Im not sure if the hard-drives have power because they are quite hidden.

Im am unsure of how to proceed. I thought I would seek some advice before physically taking it to a specialist.

My PC:

Thanks for spending the time to read this.
Any advice whatsoever would be great.

Hi, I shut my laptop down last night without having a problem with it at all...ever! IT is a dell xps1530 running window's vista. This morning I booted it up and it powers on but justs sits at a black screen. No cursors are flashing, none of the F keys do anything to try to boot in safe mode...the computer just absolutely does nothing. I have tried inserting the install cd to try to boot from that and it accepted the cd and now won't spit it out. I tried taking out the battery and unplugging it and holding the on button down for 60s. that didn't help. I have reseated the hard drive and the memory. beyond that I am not much use. Any suggestions?

A:Laptop powers up but boots to a black screen

Its possible that the motherboard is failing or has failed.have it looked at so that you will know for sure the exact problem.from what i understand the xps laptops are for gaming and are known for having motherboard issues.as far as the stuck cd try to go to the cd/dvd drive itself and try to eject it or use a paperclip to try to pop open the drawer.

@q59, welcome to the forum. The first component that comes to mind when I see these symptoms is the power supply unit (PSU).  However, here is a guide that will help you troubleshoot the hardware to see if it is working properly.  Some of the diagnostics are done from UEFI so the computer doesn't have to boot. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. It has been running like a well oiled machine since the day I got it.

I turned it off to watch TV, then when I turned it back on, the screen shows the Toshiba screen for about 1/4th of a second and then goes black.

If I hit F8, F10, or F12 nothing shows up. I have the biggest project of the semester due Tuesday so I really need some help.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

A:Toshiba screen and then black screen only. No boot menu either.

How old is the laptop? It sounds like it's definitely a hardware problem. If it's still under warranty, I'd recommend sending it in. About your project, the only way to get that off of your computer is going to be to take apart the computer and plug the hard drive into another computer. You can buy an adapter (Laptop Hard-drive Bay to USB) for $20-40, they're smaller than a normal PC bay so you can't mount it inside a desktop computer.

It did not come with one and after taking out everything I have that came with it i now see that i should have made a restore disc before using it! well I did not do this..... so what are my options? I have bought a new toshiba and did make a restore disc for it before using it, if that helps they both run windows 7 home prem. I did try to put the new comp disc in the old one but you could hear the disc turning but after hours it never did anything :-( Thanks for your help!

Recently if watching a film in full screen mode, when the film finishes the screen turns off (if connected to tv I get no signal input at this point) all it takes is to move the mouse to get the screen back on but could this be the start of something serious.

Also it has started to go black as though a screen saver or monitor saver is active (which they aren't) but you can still hear music or a game playing through the speakers.

I have the newest drivers already installed. The machine specs are under machine 2 in my profile.

Thanks for any help

Hi all

I have a Toshiba Satelite A80 running Windows XP and it's almost 4 years old. Last night I was working on it and put it aside for about 10 minutes. IE was freezing a bit, but I used the task manager to close some windows and it seemed to be okay.

When I looked up the screen had gone black. I assumed that it was hibernating but when I tried to get the screen to come up again nothing happened. I pressed the on/off switch to boot it up again and the screen remained black, even though I could hear the fan and usual noises it makes when it boots up. However, none of the lights that usually come on work anymore (e.g., wireless button light) with the exception of the power light.

I tried all kinds of things to check if it was the power supply (removing battery and running normal power, holding down on button for 20 seconds and reconnecting power) and nothing changed. I also tried connecting it to an external monitor today and the screen remains black.

There is about 50 hours worth of recent grad school work on the hard drive and I am pretty desperate to access it. As long as I can get the data, I don't care if I use the laptop again. I've had consistent problems with the CD/DVD drive (apparantly common in Toshibas) over the last 18 months so I was considering getting a new one.

Can anyone suggest what might have caused this and what my chances are accessing a couple of files? I have had no error messages or beeps or anything - just a black screen. I also... Read more

A:Toshiba laptop with black screen - please help

There is a method I use of getting data from a failed laptop's hard disk; but, if you are in a hurry, you had best take the laptop to a shop that can do it for you because the method requires access to a desktop computer and an adapter that usually isn't sold in local stores.

You use the adapter to connect the laptop's hard disk internally to a desktop computer and then simply copy the data from one disk to another. You could also use an external laptop drive enclosure with USB interface; but, that is more expensive and less reliable.

Well, I have changed a few Toshiba Notebook LCD's, and some of them where not even broken, just misconnected or someother causes. But I would recommend sitting down, and removing the screws on the sides of the screen panel and poppin it out and taking a quick look in the back and bottom of the screen to make sure everything is in order.

If you see picture when you boot. I would recommend checking the bios settings. Try looking for video related options.

Hi everyone, I'm very sorry if this has been asked and answered before. I have a Toshiba Satellite L305 series laptop running windows vista home premium. Last week I got a blue screen that I didn't read in time so I don't know what it said, and then it shut down. I tried to restart it but only get to a black screen with a moveable white arrow. I tried using windows startup repair, it gives me a white bar at the bottem that says loading files then the windows copyright screen but then just does the same thing and goes back to the black screen. I've tried booting in safe mode, booting with last known good configuration, and system recovery. I've also tried using a recovery disc, that I had to buy from toshiba b/c I lost my disc in a move, to no avail just the same black screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW when I put the recovery disc in you can hear the disc spinning and the fans working until it gets to the windows copyright page then everything dies down and black screen time.

I have a just barely 6y/o Toshiba satelliteA135-S4666. Few says ago was working perfectly fine, now the screen footed blank after a few seconds of turning on. It's still running and sometimes i can get the screen back on if i move it back and forth.
That at least gets me to believe maybe a wire is just loose and not the graphics or motherboards. I just need some directions on were to go from here.

Help. I tried to boot up mylaptop and the screen stays black. The Toshiba logo screen came on. And the Windows screen came on. I have Windows XP home edition. Then the screen went black when it should have gone to my desktop wallpaper. All the sounds came on as if it was booting up. When I push the keys I hear this "blop" sound for lack of another word that is the best way I can describe it. What has happened.?

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro C660 with a blank screen. The laptop starts up and goes through its boot cycle fine, but nothing is displayed on the screen.

I've read through tons of forums, but nothing seems to work.

I did the whole removal of battery, power supply and holding the power button for 60 secs... still blank...

When plugging in an external monitor it works perfectly fine, so this eliminates any issues with the CPU / GPU / RAM / HDD, etc.

I re-installed windows 7, which would hopefully eliminate any software issues.

Next logical step was to check the LCD backlight, inverter and ribbon cable... So I replaced the screen, but still blank screen. Just as a side note, the backlight lights up with both old and new display, but no picture.

This leaves me to think that it might be something in the BIOS?

Any suggestions / ideas?

I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7. It has been running like a well oiled machine since the day I got it.

I turned it off to watch TV, then when I turned it back on, the screen shows the Toshiba screen for about 1/4th of a second and then goes black.

If I hit F8, F10, or F12 nothing shows up. I have the biggest project of the semester due Tuesday so I really need some help.

I appreciate any help. Thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1EH laptop. My laptop starts but the screen keeps black. The light of my Caps-Lock and Num-Lock doesn't work but normally it works. I think it doesn't work because my laptop has a black screen. I tried the method with unplugging the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds and the method worked the first 2 time but now the method doesn't work. I also tried an external monitor but that didn't work. Can someone help me please? Here are my laptop specs:
250GB hard drive (the original is 500GB)
Nvidia GeForce GT 740M
Intel Core I7-4700MQ

Sorry for my bad English.

Alright, so im not sure if this is software or hardware issue, but my satellite restarted for an update about a week ago and turned back on with a black screen. I tried taking the battery out, pressing the power button for 60 seconds, restarting it, starting in it safe mode, factory resetting it on startup. Nothing. Sometimes the fan will be running, then the machine stops. Sometimes it will just run and stay on the black screen. Sometimes it will start up and the power button wont even be lit, but the fans, and the led for caps lock will be on. Is it time for a new computer, or is there a way to fix this?
