The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

Q: The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

Hello,

I apparently deleted some files, though precisely when is an open question (likely within the last 3 months). I have already run a few file recovery programs to no avail. The files are mostly scientific articles, so they are replaceable. The catch is I need to know which files that were deleted.

I know that Windows is renowned for the amount of data it logs about system activity. I was hoping that there is an access log buried somewhere that I could search for the folder names and find a list of the specific files that were deleted. Also, any recommendations on the program(s) that would be helpful in doing this. I am running Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Dell Latitude D830.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer

Preferred Solution: The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

A: The possibility of finding a file access log detailing deleted files.

Windows does not log that kind of thing unless file system auditing is enabled and the appropriate options set. This is NOT enabled by default. This auditing would consume a large amount of disk space in quite a short period of time unless it is very selective.

The real solution to this kind of problem is to maintain backups of all important files. There are a variety of ways that data can be lost and not all are preventable and not all recoverable. You need to be prepared when (not if) something happens.

I like freeware Restoration (it recovers from emptied recycle bin):

Of course there is better software but you have to spend $ for it.

Strangely your editor does not allow me to enter a title Using Firefox.

Hello again,

No matter which undelete programme I try, not one of them will ever find a deleted file.

I copy a file to a directory on C: or D:, delete it and then empty the Recycle Bin. Whatever application I care to use, the file, which is very unlikely to have been overwritten, can not be found. No trace of it ever.

The undelete applications are on drive Z: so that running the undeleter should have no effect on drive C: or D: where the deletion has been done.

Is there something wrong with my discs, or is it the security app ? It worked in XP !

Hi, I was just wondering if there is a command prompt or anything else you can do to find out when a file was deleted.

I lost a bunch of downloaded files on the 24 of november this year and I was not on the computer that day, I did however have the computer with me and I believe someone I know deleted these files purposely.

I would obviously like to recover but that is not a big deal, however I am much more interested in finding out if the files were deleted on this day or when they were deleted.

If there is a log of when files deleted or something I can do to find out it would be of great help.

Thanks in advance.

A:Finding when a file was deleted

If they are still in the recycle bin then they should have a date of deletion marked .. you should be able to right click and select the column if it's not shown.

If the files have been deleted from the recycle bin then there are some pieces of software that can recover those files .. sometimes but not always the recovery software will notify you of the date and time deleted. It really depends upon the recovery software being used

My computer is currently being upgraded to Windows XP at work and I had soem file son there back in 2005 that I deleted. These were personal files. Will the techs uncover these files while they upload all my current material on my compyuter now to the server only to bring it back down from the server on a new harddrive containing XP. If so what can I do to prevent these files from being seen? Like I said it has been almost two years since i had these files on my computer and have long been gone. I know that some files can be recovered but does this take a lotof time? ALso I store tons of info on my computer so is it likely that...the old material was written over?

Thanks,

A:Finding Deleted files 2 years old

If you deleted them, and emptied the recycle bin, it is doubful they will find them.
They would have to be deliberately looking for, and trying to recover, deleted files.
When upgrading the OS, that is not usually done.

Looking through my Document File "Alpha Address List"I accidently replaced the file with a Blank File of the same name . When I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I looked in the Recycle bin there were no files in there at all. Where had it gone ? How could I find it and restore it?

I believe I made a grave error next as I went into the Recovery Programme and picked a recovery point which was 4 or 5 days back from the day my "Alpha Address List" file went missing. When the restore had been completed I looked at the "Alpha Address File" and just a blank copy of that was there.

I realise now that all the recovery programme did was restore the Windows System Files and not the Office 10 personal document "doc" files.

It may be a lost cause now but is there any way I can retrieve the "Alpha Address List" file back .

Any assistance wiould be appreciated

In my Ult. Vistax64, Windows update hangs. I tried numerous fixes from Microsoft (MrFixIt) and others. nothing seems to fix it, including a full system image restore from a month ago.

System Restore also seems to have had its restore points deleted as there are only two recent saved restore points/images.

And I have noticed that after booting up, and perhaps at other times, my CPU usage goes to 100%. Both the Windows update service is running (wuauserv) - see pic - and when I stop it, CPU usage gets better.

what is a bit concerning is that my McAfee virus is also taking up CPU usage as if transfer activity over the internet is heavy. No viruses are found, either via real-time scanning or if I run a manual scan on the hard drives.

I have also run an sfc /scannow , there are a lot of PendingRenames, which seem to be from the sfc command fixing errors, as well as a lot of "duplicate ownership...", which is sort of scary to see when I have a problem with my computer.

Besides the failure of the windows Update, the SFC /scannow keeps finding corrupt files and repairing them, and it does not seem just limited to a few that "are erroneously marked as corrupt" and not a problem, according to research into these problems.
The computer seems to be working fine, but not being able to install updates is a problem, and the high CPU usage is suspicious. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello chums

I have a customer database with all of the tools to send emails to recipients from the database. That works great and, using "ClickYes", the level of unmanned sending gets me round spamming limits at the ISP level too.

My latest request is to be able to add PDF (or other) attachments to the email.

In my VBA code, I have a snippet of code that says:
Code:
With oMail
.to = strEmailAddress
.body = Me.txtEmailMessageContent.Value
.Subject = Me.txtEmailSubjectMatter.Value
.Attachments.Add ("C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\testdocument.pdf")
.Send
End With
With this code in place, Access sends the email to the variable 'strEmailAddress' with the attachment shown in the path, and hardcoded in VBA its great.

I'd like however to be able to navigate to the file I want to attach, so its not dependent on the filename being coded.

I once created some VB code (as opposed to VBA) that opens a dialogue box to let me nagivate to the file I want to choose, but, before I go around the houses, would that VB code (written in VB6) be suitable for my Access concept? Will it drop straight into my VBA?

Hope VB/VBA gurus can guide me here!

Thanks

Chris

Hello,
I performed a system maintenance a few days ago and ran sfc to verify the system files. The utility found some corrupted files and repaired some of them. Then I ran the tool the 2nd time to check if no more corrupted files exist but it said found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I exported the log but have no clue on which files are corrupted. Anyone can help to identify what are the corrupted files?

Thanks!

A:Help on finding corrupted files unable to fix by System File Checker

I had exactly the same problem as you and this is the aide-memoire I wrote myself while attempting to find the faulty files. In the end I said to myself "You have always wanted a SSD - why not buy one and build a new W7 on it". I never regretted the decision and I will NEVER have a PC without an SSD. I think the Digital River link has been taken down ...

My problem arose helping a friend with a nasty - I managed to get it on my PC and it changed ownerships and permissions on lots of files. Eventually MS refused to upgrade IE because it could not find? or could not delete? the segoe.ttf font to update it. So the rogue font files aborted the IE upgrade!

For what its worth ..

System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)

1. Cet a cmd window as administrator by Click Start > type cmd >, ctrl / shift / enter

Or click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. ***

2. Type sfc /scannow and press ENTER:

The sfc /scannow command scans all system files and will recover the corrupted ones.

3. Please restart the computer and recheck the original issue.

SFC logs it's actions to the C:\WINDOWS\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG. You can find the specific SFC entries by searching for the [SR] tags in the log.

THis is useful way to run sfc /scannow fixes, sfc /verify only lists all problems

A file called AV.exe accessed my computer and was caught by Norton, and deleted. I don't know if that has anything to do with this issue, but recently I have been unable to access any .exe files on my computer. The programs all work, I can pull up Firefox, IE, Wordperfect, etc.; but to make it work, I have to pull them up using a document. When I try to access it directly, I get a box telling me to choose which program I want to use to open the file, followed by a list of programs.

Example: I try to open Firefox directly. The box comes up: "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
File: Firefox.exe"
Right at the top of the list is Firefox, and if I click there, it works.

I can also open .exe files from a dos prompt, just not from Windows.

It has also messed around with a couple of settings. Nothing major, but I personally deactivated the "trackpad click" where it clicks if you tap it. That has been reactivated, and the scroll bars on the side of the trackpad have been disabled. Like I said, though, no major changes that I've found other than that.

I saw something about this previously on here, but I didn't see whether it was resolved or not. It said to download and run dds and GMER. I've done that and attached the attach file and the GMER.txt file.

Windows 7 recently detected that one of my HDD was corrupted. It then ran it's system check services and fixed the errors. However I noticed it deleted a massive amount of data. I'm trying to retrieve the data and I noticed a found.000 folder. Would all my recovered data be in that folder? I remember a process similar to like downloading some obscure software to open up a CHK file or something which I also see in the found.000 folder along with some CHK folders which have files which are readily acccessible.

If you are missing text files, then you can use Notepad to open the CHK files and see if they are what you are looking for.

Hello, I had a virus this am, not sure which, malware detec something or other. It looked like others I've had in the past such as System Security 2011 and Vista Security. So I restarted in safe mode, ran FixNCR.reg, Ran RKill, than Ran MalwareBytes. It found 3 items, deleted them, then wanted me to restart windows. When Windows Vista 64 Premium Home Ed started up again, I got an error that catalist control center has stopped working. I could navigate to my various hard drives, D, E, etc., but windows could not see any file folders on these drives. I know the files and data are still there, as I saw then all listed when MalwareBytes was scanning them. As well, windows still shows the amount of free space on each drive when I navigate to my computer.
So, how can I see my folders etc. again?

I wanted to consolidate data from other disks that I had so I could use those disks to convert an existing W7 installation into a RAID array. So I hooked up additional 2 x 500GB disks that contained files and previous installations of Windows and a 1TB drive to copy the files I wanted to keep. These two 500GB other disks were used for Vista in the past and both had been used as primary hard disks (ie they both had independent OS's installed).

After booting up, I proceeded to browse through the disks and decided what I wanted to keep and what I didn't want to keep. I had to change permissions here and there to get access to the old Vista directories etc. All well and good so far.

I have C: (W7 installation), G: (old Vista disk) and F: (another old Vista disk). For all other installs including the W7, I used the same username. For convenience sake, lets call my username billgates.

So, C:, G: and F: all had directories USERS/billgates directories. Following this so far?

When I browsed to F:\users\billgates, I was seeing files from that directory plus files from c:\users\billgates even though the location in windows explorer was saying f:\users\billgates

Without analysing this too much, I went on to delete directories and files that I didn't want from my G: and F: drives only to find that it had also deleted directories by the same name from my C: drive!!

Anyone else had this problem?

After the scan Combofix told me: ----- File Replicators ----- and a list of my documents i many different volumes. Then i searched a system restore point to undo, but surprise, Comofix does not provide a system restore point before to start, only a registry backup to use in case a pc becomes unbootable. I refer just un example, Opera web browser makes alone and silently a system restore point before install or uninstall it. This a part, I cant understand why Combofix deletes filels like "vmnat.exe" (part of Vmware), "install.exe" (part of Microsoft? Visual Studio? 2008) and the worst of all imho it is that in the "C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\Replicators" folder there is a file, I imagine it is a sort of archive of the quarantineted/replicated files. At this point I find very grave that inside the file located in "C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\Replicators\Replicator_6.txt" there is not instructions how to restore the files archived in my case into a single file w/o extension of 2 MB named using hexadecimal values. I agree that an error can happen, but I can't accept that you hide the way to repair at the error. I lost my data, time to write because it is not my first language. All that I get should be avoided simply making at first a system restore point, at second when quarantined, all files stored on a zip for instance protect by a passphrase witten into the log. Last to do should be an easy batch to restore files an folders exaclty where they where. In the wile, I woul like suggest to add ... Read more

Hello,
I have a problem with IE11 when downloading *.tif files from an intranet server.  When I click the link to download one of these files it opens sometimes and fails other times.  I can try to download the same file 10 times in a row and it may fail
4/10 times and open the other 6 times.  All other file types (pdf, docx, etc) download fine.
Now the odd thing is that the file I am trying to open is a *.tif but IE will say that *.tiff (yes, extra 'f') has been moved or deleted.  If I close IE and reopen it and then view downloads, it now says *.TIF (all caps) has been moved or deleted.  I
believe that there is something in IE that is trying to download *.tiff files instead of *.tif so it can not find the file and gives me the error.  The only odd thing is that it works some of the time.
This worked fine on IE8 and IE9 (never had IE10) but we recently upgraded to IE11 and now it is exhibiting this issue.  If I use Google Chrome it works fine but we rely on IE for a lot of inhouse applications so other browsers are not an option.  I
am at a loss and looking for any insight.
Thank you.

I used some recovery software to recover the files. But most of the files are lost.

Request help to get the data.

Thanks

sajith

A:System Restore Deleted Files Personal file

System restore shouldnt touch your personal files unless they were saved on the c drive outside of your personal directory.

You have pretty much already done what you can do to restore the files you are missing. If you cant find them it is likely because the data has already been overwritten by something else and is now irretrievable. You might be able to use a program like Recuva or GetDataBack to get the rest of it, but I would say that its doubtful.

Hello,

I have a file on an employee's computer that builds in Internet Explorer's temp files when using an online service. I need that file to not be deleted at random. The file in question is RinconClient[1].xap, pictured below in the Event Viewer, with file auditing.

I have narrowed it down to either dllhost.exe or taskhostw.exe deleting the file, in event viewer. We have antivirus software which has not detected anything malicious in regards to the RinconClient[1].xap file.

In Internet Explorer, I have
Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed = Unchecked
Delete Browsing History no exit = Unchecked
Check for Newer versions of stored pages = Never
Allow website caches and databases = Checked

In Task Scheduler
CleanupTemporaryState = Disabled
SilentCleanup = Disabled

I have messed with permissions to the C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Low\IE folders and subfolders and to the file itself. Making sure it is supposed to not get deleted.

I have tried a script which copies the file to each folder and subfolder in
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Low\IE
Did not resolve the issue.

A:install file and (any) Files got deleted automatically when the computer switch off

Hello Kushal! Please don't give your e-mail id in the posts. Its not advisable. So please edit your post and remove it.

Secondly,I don't think this question is in the right forum. So I'll be requesting a mod to move it to a correct one so that you can receive help.
As far as I've seen Advanced System Care (ASC) is downright harmful. Bought down a hell for me. So, I'll personally advice you against its usage. Try to remember, has the problem started after you started using ASC? Have you tried to do registry cleaning with ASC?
If yes, then maybe you can try a system restore to a time when a problem was not there.

I don't know what forum to put this in right now. Sorry.

I have iObit's Advanced System care and it has a 'cloned file finder' and it finds and deletes them. I was under the impression that 'cloned' files were file duplicates. I don't know if that is right or not. Anyway, the thing says to be careful with it and view the files to make sure you want to delete them. I looked through some but there were thousands of files and obviously didn't want to look through every single one. Plus, I thought it was deleting duplicates and it was supposed to save one version of the file so deleting copies wouldn't be a problem cause one would still remain.

But, it deleted tons of original files! I restored the recycle bin but a good portion couldn't be restored and I had to 'skip' it and they are gone now. I used iobit's 'undelete tool' and it only restored about 100 files. Is there anything I can do to restore everything that it deleted? I can do a restore point on my computer but I don't have any restore points already made, even though it's supposed to do it automatically. I don't know if it will restore to the right time, if I am just making one now. I am so scared I lost stuff I need. I already see the weather tracker on my windows toolbar isn't working right. I have about 15 GB extra on my hard drive then I did before, that stuff is still gone!

You have to take responsibility for making choices.  One choice I recommend going forward is to uninstall IO System Care and every other kind of PC Care -- I have heard others had unintended consequences with such programs.  Don't uninstall until this all has been resolved as best as possible.
Going forward, you may be able to find a high-quality, fee or free, USB-stick portable version, folder/file undelete program.  There are many out there, some free, some expensive.  Decide how much you want to pay for and apply blood, tears, toil and sweat to:
TRY, I repeat, TRY to recover folders and files; no program in its right mind will guarantee to undelete each and every deleted folder and file.

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help?

Was unable to download any files would say file contained a virus and was deleted, I did some research and my understanding was that the computer was infected with a virus.  I deleted my anti virus software as some sites instructed to, I am currently using Trend Titanium.  I ran Windows defender offline which removed a Trojan virus.  I also downloaded malwarbytes onto a usb from my laptop and also ran this on the infected PC this removed 4 Trojans, also windows firewall and defender was not working, I got firewall working by adding something into the registry (as instructed to on another site) now I am left with no windows defender and this error saying all files deleted due to virus.  I currently  have not re installed my anti virus yet as I am trying to fix this first.  I have done several system restores also and this has not fixed it.  Does anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it without completely wiping my computer?

Thanks,
Kelly

This is most likely a ZeroAccess Rootkit. If you cannot do this on that PC try running DDS (in the Guide) from a Flash Drive. If you still cannot run DDS, then just open the new topic (Guide, step 7) with the original question. Mention you cannot run DDS.Title your post Probable Zero Access. Please follow this Preparation Guide and post in a new topic.Let me know if all went well.

NoVirusThanks File System Protector is a powerful utility which uses a kernel-mode driver to completely lock a file or a folder and to deny write access to files (allow read-only). You can write rules for any process or only for specific processes, you can lock files or folders and you can also protect files from modifications (write access) so that processes can only read the file content, but not hijack or modify it. With NoVirusThanks File System Protector you can protect sensitive files and folders from unauthorized accesses or modifications, a swiss army knife against nasty ransomware like CryptoLocker family or to just protect important files.

On the ?Settings? tab you can specify a custom logs folder to save blocked events, and on ?Exclusions? tab you can manage trusted applications (using wildcards), so they are excluded from the block-rules. To edit the default rules or to create your custom rules, open the ?Rules? tab and then click the button ?Edit Rules? (it may ask you Admin credentials) to edit the Rules.DB file. The rules are updated in real-time and writing rules is very easy, you can use wildcards characters and aliases, example:

Code:

[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\locked-file.txt]
[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *process.exe] [%FILE%: *\LockedFolder]
[%OPER%: DENY_WRITE] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\read-only.txt]

Hi langfordj!!

Can you verify further the issue? Did you deleted or uninstalled the program? Or did you mean you deleted the icons?

If you mentioning that you actually uninstall the programs, you may try system restore as an options, but there is no guarantee you can get the program again. You might want to give it a try and see.

Is there any free software online that is able to retrieve emails permanently deleted from an AOL account about 3 weeks ago? The email was also printed out that day in case if that helps in locating the lost email in some random sector of the hard drive.
Thanks!

A:Finding deleted emails

If the email was stored on the AOL server, and not downloaded in Outlook or Outlook express, you have zero chance of retrival, as it is stored on a server that you have no control over and would certainly be already written over.

If it did create a temporary spool file in memory while printing out, that will have been immediately deleted when the print operation finished.

If you actually downloaded it in Outlook or similar, then deleted it there is every liklihood it is in your email delected folder. But that is speculation as we don't know how it was accessed.

Did you send an e-mail to any one of those addresses?
If so, check in your Sent Items folder.

If you haven't sent an e-mail message to the e-mail address or received an e-mail from that e-mail address, I don't know other than asking how you came by the addresses originally.

I tried the recommendations for fixing this below:

Follow these steps to grant full permissions to the folder where the files are stored: 1. Right click on the folder on the external drive and click on
properties. 2. On the property window, click Security tab.
3. Now click on Edit and then click Add.
4. Now type everyone in the box and
click OK.

5. Then check Full control check box.

6. Click on Apply and then click OK.
You may also try the below mentioned steps:
1. Click on Start. 2. Go to Control Panel. 3. Select "SOUND". 4. Double click on speakers. 5. Click on advanced tab and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

But then I received the error message that I don't have rights to edit and add.  Why would this be?  I am the administrator?

Thanks!

A:Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.

Hi,
Please first take ownership of the folder or files, then give yourself full control permission.

Hi

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.

I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error

I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MRXSmb\Parameters\
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 1 (enabled)
