Solved: Outlook Express ***.email attachments

Q: Solved: Outlook Express ***.email attachments

I have a friend with a freshly restored computer.
He can no longer read his Emails that have a ***.email attachment.
But ***.eml attachments work fine.

And his computer now works the same as mine, probably because I restored it for him.

If the ***.email attachment is read, OE doesn’t know what to do with it.
His Email with ***.eml attachments work fine.
If the ***.email attachment is renamed to ****.eml .. it reads fine.
If ****.email files are associated to OE .. nothing happens.
The ****.email attachments can be read in M$ Word.

So how would a computer be setup to read ***.email attachments ??
Is C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msims.exe the correct application ??

I’m curious why he’s getting these weird attachments from several sources ??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Outlook Express ***.email attachments

I'm not exactly sure why he gets these attachments. Some could be attached messages from people who use MSN. http://filext.com/file-extension/email doesn't say too much, but does mention that they are easily infected with viruses.

You should be able to open these by creating a new file type with an email extension. (Tools, Folder Options, File Types) Just use everything that you see listed for the .eml file type. The program would be "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

An alternative would be to use Regedit. Export the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml] key. Open it in notepad and change the eml to email. Now doubleclick to merge.

I am finally upgrading to a new PC and leaving the steam age behind!  I need to know if there is an easy way to find and copy all of the attachments that came with emails sent to Outlook Express.  I know the files are *.dbx but I wondered where the attachments were stored and if I could locate them all by searching for *.do, *.jpg etc?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

A:Outlook Express Email Attachments

All emails using Outlook Express...are encoded.  You will only be able to separate attachments individuallly, after opening each email.
If you had saved the individual attachments somewhere else on your hard drive...then you would have been able to put them all in one folder.

I have been having difficulty opening email attachments (Word or Excel). Our new computer came with XP and a trial version of Office 2003. When the trial ran out I uninstalled Office 2003 and installed my Office 97 version. Now when I try to open an attachment in Outlook I receive the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\.....doc is not a valid Win32 application.
Doing a right click-shift does not allow me to save the document as a word or excel file either.
Also when Outlook downloads the file from my internet service provider, the software icon changes from a MS icon to a wordpad icon.

Any suggestions?

I am trying to send an email with an attachment via OE6 . I get "server time out" error message every time. This problem was so frustrating and it seemed so many things could be contributing to this behavior. So, I just wiped the harddrive and reinstalled windows XP media center 2005. I am still getting the same result. I am able to send email with other windows XP computers attached to our router/modem with the same DSL settings , server login info, accounts, etc. It is as if this particular machine , software or hardware built into it is not allowing attachments to be sent.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi smelsco

Is AVG E-mail scanning enabled?

First try adjusting your Server Timeout settings:

In Outlook Express:
Tools > Accounts > Mail tab > (AccountName) > Properties
On the Advanced tab, adjust the Server Timeout settings to at least 2 minutes.
If you still receive the Timeout error, adjust the Server Timeout to 5 minutes.

If the Timeout error persists with the Server Timeout set to 5 minutes, try disabling AVG from checking outgoing emails.

Double click the AVG icon in the System Tray.
Right click the E-mail Scanner component,
Properties > Plugins tab > Configure button
Uncheck: Check outgoing mail
OK, OK to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

For Windows XP Home Edition, Outlook Express 6, I am backing up to CD the accounts and addressbook using "Export" and .dbx folders by file copy as advised in many places. However, I don't think I am backing up the attachments! By opening an attachment and asking to save it, I found its location to be Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5 (32 subfolders) so I suspect the attachments are not also stored in the .dbx folders. However these Content.IE5 folders are very large and contain other stuff like historical webpages. I have searched and searched but nowhere found any mention of attachment backup. I thought of using Tools/Internet Options/Clear History to try to reduce these subfolders down to attachments only, which I could then back up to CD, but will the attachments get cleared down too?

Looking for a simple solution to a simple question(I think!).
OE 6, Windows XP.
I get a regular list of email from various people with attachments that I wish to save to a specific folder I've created. Although I have gone so far as to edit the sacred REGISTRY (...Outlook Express\5.0\Save Attachment Path) the altered Registry path doesn't stay for more than one saved attachment. The first saved attachment automatically points to my folder, but the second one points back to the generic high level 'My Documents'. Yes, I can then scroll down through the levels to find my desired folder, and then the 'save' works fine, but how can I keep that other folder as my 'default'? Why won't the Registry change 'keep'?
I am the sole user of the computer, the owner, the administrator, etc.

Thanks for any help here,

It's a current bug in OE. Until it's fixed, Kelly Theriot has a workaround
at her site called "Saved Attachments Default in OE." If you utilize this
fix, be sure to select the XP download:

You may want to make a restore point, just in case:

I have forwarded e-mails from my office (using Outlook) to my home address but when I receive them at home the attachments (.jpg) are nowhere to be found. The file size is the same as the one that I sent from the office and if I forward the e-mail back to my office, the attachments are visible again. I have tried the normal security settings by making sure that "Do not allow attachments to be saved or ......" is not checked as well as "Block images and other external content....". My default e-mail format was RTF but I have also tried sending them as HTML which forces the attachments to be attached rather than embedded in the mail. I have also revised the security zone setting in Express to the Internet zone.
The received e-mail is blank with an attachment "originalmail.eml". I have tried dragging this to the In box which then shows the original e-mail in the In box but when I open the mail there are no attachments. Opening it directly by double clicking "originalmail.eml" also opens the e-mail - but again no attachments. I have read elsewhere that security update 911567 may have something to do with the problem. I use Avast 4.7 and Internet mail (Version 4.7-942) is set to "High". Does anyone have any advice on tracking down the missing attachments.

I've installed Office 2003 on my PC - all working fine, mail migrated to Outlook etc. However, when I send an attachment from any program (Excel, Word etc) using the File, Send To command (which I have to do, because one is an Access database and so it's an embedded command) it defaults to Outlook Express.

I've tried renaming the msimn.exe file, which merely greyed out all of the options in the Send To box.

Win XP Home-IE6-Outlook Express 6

My previous post on this problem (10-2-09) has gone unanswered so I am reposting and
rephrasing the problem.

I can no longer open attachments in emails by clicking on the paper clip. When I do that the "Save atttachment as" window opens.

I do not want to save the attachment to a file folder before opening it. I can open the attachment by right clicking the email to open the email and then proceeding through several additional steps/clicks to open the attachment but it's extra steps and I am not used to having to do it that way.

I have googled the problem and tried several supposed resolutions which did not help.

This doesn"t seem to be a "rocket science" problem, but it just appeared one day and I can't find a solution.

Any help would be appreciated short of uninstalling Outlook Express and starting over!

I'm sorry if this problem has been addressed already, I got to page three and saw nothing like it so I gave up.

I have no problems receiving e-mails ( I generally have to check as I have had problems receiving data in the past ), other than being generally slow to come through.

I spent a couple of days updating Win2k from SP1 to SP4 and all the other goodies that come along with it, Outlook Express included.

Since then, all e-mail with attachments that I have received have not allowed me to open the attachments as a single file - away from the e-mail itself.

Let me explain: These files appear to be coming through - images that are to open in the email itself as a general graphic appear...you can see them there. However once you click on the paper clip, and the drop down list appears all the attachments in the e-mail are dulled out or "false" ... they cannot be opened. It is the same with all files...

Also, above the sender details highlighted in yellow the text "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your mail: (attachment names) ".

I do not recall ever telling Outlook Express to do this, I didn't even realise Outlook could do that!

I really hope that made sense .

If anyone has any idea why this is occuring I would be so grateful for your help.

During 2006, my PC was using Win98-SE. In December, I began having problems booting, (it would only boot in safe mode). (BTW - this followed a seize-up viewing a Video Professor CD).

A tech at a computer show installed a new hard drive and Windows XP Home. The old hard drive (partitioned as C: and D: ) became a slave unit as D: and E:. This preserved valuable company data but meant numerous applications had to be reinstalled.

I reinstalled Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and I receive E-mail OK, but I have a serious "nuisance" problem. Attachments of type ".doc" will open automatically using Word, but ".pdf" attachments will no longer automatically open via Adobe Reader 7.0. I get an error window saying there is no file association for type ".pdf" and I should set one using Folder Options.

What is somewhat strange is that the path in the top banner line of the error window does not really exist. It will say "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\...", then a machine-generated 8-char alphanumeric folder name. However, this only exists down as far as "Local Settings." That folder has two subfolders: "Application Data" and "Temp", but NOT "Temporary Internet Files".

To find "Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\", you have to open "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings" instead. Needless to say, when... Read more

I use OE 6 on my desktop running XP pro, but use Outlook 2007 on my laptop running XP home. I cannot receive attachments sent from my Outlook 2007 to my OE 6 when I send it to myself. They are stripped off, not even showing an attachment. The attachment comes through to other recipients as far as I know, INCLUDING my alternate email address (through at&t). So OE 6 receives the attachment when I send it from my default email account to my at&t account, but not when I send it to from and to my default account. I have checked with my email provider, who has checked the server (IMAP) and they do not see any problem--the attachment is on the server. I have already unchecked all potential blocks under the Security Tab--image blocking and attachment blocking--and am operating in the Internet Zone. And, as far as I know, I am receiving attachments from everyone else in the world. I know there are ways to work around this problem, but it is irritating and I have concerns that my email attachments to clients may be unknowingly blocked. Also, I cannot receive those attachments on my Blackberry either.

Locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.
Close Outlook Express.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to that directory.
Locate the Deleted Items.dbx file and rename it Deleted Items.old
Start Outlook Express, a new Deleted Items folder will be created.
See if you can delete messages.

Let us know if that works for you or not.
Also, keep the Inbox empty, move messages you want to keep to folders of your own creation in Outlook Express. Otherwise, you risk losing the contents of the Inbox should it become corrupted.

Some how I got a security alert tool notice and it locked up my computer. I was able to fix the problem by using my computer repair tool. I use Outlook Express and had to start all over. Is it possible that my old e-mails are still in the system. While rebooting/fixing, the message said that I would NOT lose any data. Thanks.
