Laptop Has 'Fixed' Resolution

Q: Laptop Has 'Fixed' Resolution

Got a 'budget' laptop, Compaq Presario CQ58. 1366x768 seems to be the only resolution available. Nothing else is listed.

Are there any third-party resolution changers available or any Windows hints as to how to change resolutions?

Preferred Solution: Laptop Has 'Fixed' Resolution

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Laptop Has 'Fixed' Resolution

why would you want to change resolution? That's its screen's native resolution. Anything more or less will look ugly (the reason why it's locked in the first place).

My brother bought an ATI HD 7870 to replace his HD 6870.
He has two monitors: a Medion MD 30422 PV and a VD Tech TQL2318VD.001.
The two displays worked properly under the HD 6870 and under the HD 7870 when the ATI drivers were NOT installed.

Whenever we install the ATI HD 7800 Series (version drivers, the Medion screen gets stuck at VGA resolution (640x480).
Installing Medion drivers does not help and removing the ATI drivers fixes the screen resolution.
So now I'm wondering if there's any way that I can have both the ATI drivers installed and be able to change the resolution on the Medion screen.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Hey forum gurus,

I have an Olevia 226 Monitor plugged into my computer. For some reason the resolution is 640x480 (it is supposed to support 1366 x 768) and I cannot get it to change resolution, I have tried basic display properties under the setting tab (I am running XP Home SP 2) and the tab which changes the resolution will not even pan at all. The screen resolution sucks and I cannot change it even though my graphics card Intel 82915G Express Chip is capable of 1024x768, i even changed monitors and it was fine, I was able to choose 1024 x 768, then I connected the olevia back to the computer WALA, 1024x768 no problem. It still wound't let me change the resolution at all (tab wouldn't budge) but the resolution was fine. I decided I would restart the computer and see if it would stick, NOPE, back to 640x480 and it will not change unless I use an iterim monitor to get graphics card to accept 1024x768 then switch back to the olevia. ANY help would be great.

A:Olevia LCD Monitor Fixed 640 x 480 resolution. HELP!

I had the same problem. Here's what fixed mine.
Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advanced

Make sure you choose these settings or your monitor will totally blank out. If it does, don't hit any key or click the mouse...wait about 10-15 seconds and the monitor will revert back to the other settings.

Monitor Tab
Uncheck "Hide Modes"
Select 60 Hertz refresh rate from the drop down box
Apply (Don't hit OK or it will close the active window out)
Adapter Tab
List All Modes
Select 1360 x 768 (32 bit)
OK & the "Advanced" window will close

If it doesn't automatically apply the new setting then you should now be able to slide the screen resolution bar 1360 x 768 & select 32 bit color quality from the display properties window that is still open. This should fix any conflicting setting issues.

This should (hopefully) fix your problem.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the original issue lies in the refresh rate that your graphics driver can handle. If I try to increase my refresh rate at all it messes it up again. But, I'm not a "techie" or anything so I may be way off base as to why it wasn't working to begin with.

I really hopes this works for you.

Something very odd is wrong with my laptop, my poor little 2 11, and I can't pretend I can work around it. Just yesterday, my keyboard started acting up. I can't hold ctrl or shift and press a number of keys. Like, ctrl + a can't be done to select all. Nor can I copy, paste, cut, undo, or various other things. Also some capital letters, the + sign, ? can't work either. My arrow keys are blitzed, and holding any for more than a half second zooms me to all ends of a page. I can't even get the Windows key to work. Most of these I work around with sticky keys (hence my being able to type them here) but that's a temporary solution. The oddest part is, I checked everything out with a tester and they all register. So it's not a physical issue. But when I restarted to default it still persists. I don't imagine any help here, would love it if it comes but not expecting any, but I need to send this in to a repair place. But I've also heard some real bad things about the quality and speed of Lenovo's repair facilities. What can I do, what can I expect, and has anyone ever had this problem before?

Hello everyone,,
I purchased a custom-ordered laptop from the HP store. As soon as it booted into Windows, Edge popped up with the Microsoft support hoax telling me phasmidian.stream wanted my username/password, etc. Since this is a brand new laptop, I contacted HP and was given a run-around. I closed Edge and loaded SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, Hitman Pro and several other apps, and scanned the system. They found nothing; however, since this is a brand new system, I did a complete system restore and wiped all data, just to be safe.

I have had the system up and running for about a week now and there have been some erratic problems. The mouse behaves normally sometimes and erratically at others. (For instance, if I open 2 instances of Windows Explorer and am trying to transfer files between then, sometimes I can left-click and move files/highlight files.....other times, I can't and it will display what is typical with a right-click.) It passes the hardware test sometimes and fails it at others. I have installed Microsoft Office and security apps (Bitdefender Total Security (paid version), SAS, Ccleaner, etc.). I have also confirmed that all Microsoft updates are complete. I would like help in determining if malware of some kind is on this laptop and causing any of these problems or if I need to return it to HP.

my laptop looks like it has a massive problem.

i have been on various forums for advice but unable to solve - this is the problem -

* it turns on & I CAN get into advanced menus
* it will not repair itself no matter what
* it will not go into any other modes , safe Etc....therefore I cannot restore to factory settings etc....
* ive Tried all tricks such as F8, Alt & F11 etc..... to get into advanced menu settings - all lead to the black screen
* everything i click on\ enter leads to a black screen - only a white curser appears.

its as if there is no way of accessing the computer disc/ hard drive in anyway from boot up. there is clearly a hardware problem but i cannot access anything internal beyond ordinary & advanced menus i just keep being led to the black screen & no activity. the menus work & that is all.

I have a laptop that has the all to common problem of overheating around the screen hinges which has caused them to not function properly.  This has led to the case/body of the laptop to start coming apart which has led to the fan and screen to no longer function properly.  The fan no longer works and I get an error everytime I turn my computer on.  The screen also no longer displays anything.  It will turn on, and the mic and camera work fine, but nothing gets displayed so I have to us an external monitor (so is has turned into a desktop computer rather than a laptop). Is there any way to get this issue resolved?  I have tried contacting HP but I never get through to anyone who can help.  I have tried email and getting on their chat but never get a response.  My computer is out of warranty but after searching the internet, seems like it is a very common problem with HP laptops.  It really sucks that I bought a computer with nice specs to have work fine (besides cheap hinges which have casued multiple problms).  I just don't know who to contact, every obvious method has so far failed. If I can't get this resolved soon I will be looking for a new computer, and guess what company will not be seeing my business.

A:i have blown the speakers on my laptop can they be fixed ?

mmorton Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Just about anything on a laptop can be "fixed" -- it's a matter of how much money you are willing to spend! At the least, you're looking at the cost to disassemble the laptop, remove the existing speakers, acquire new speaker, insert the new speakers into the laptop, and reassemble it.  That's mostly labor, and depending on where you are looking to get that work done, you could easily be looking at $75 per hour or more.  So, this could run into hundreds of dollars. This kind of damage is considered "customer induced failure" and is, in nearly all cases, NOT covered by standard warranties.  If you paid extra for a "full coverage" warranty, it may then be covered -- but you would have to check with your warranty provider. IF you want to find out how much HP would charge, my suggestion is for you to get in touch with the nearest Service Center.  Here is information on the Centers:  HP Notebook PCs - Using a Certified HP Service Center to Repair a Notebook PC | HP® Customer SupportGood Luck

Hello,I just had a rather unpleasant experience getting my laptop fixed. its windows 8 btw,
The people who fixed it turned to be dishonest. They took and kept my 500g HD and put a 100gb in its place without telling me. Kept it for days giving me the runaround. Didnt give me a work order explaining the work done etc. After all the arguing with them I dont trust what they may have done to me pc. What scans can I run to check and make sure my "new" system is clean? For weeks my laptop was getting slower and then I found that the CPU usage was 100%. Checking TechSupportGuy gave some clues so I searched for the programs greedily using CPU power - it shouldn't be 100% (my Dad's PC is about 5-20%). Sure enough the two culprits were Apples' software updater (49%) and HTC's software uploader (40 odd %). I ended those processes and my laptop is working much faster. Hope this helps others reading this for clues on why their PC is slow.

One day, I logged on my laptop and it popped up something and it said,
"User profile service service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"
So when I press OK, it would just sign me out and restart to the login screen.

So, I did Shift + F8, and got on the menu to reset my laptop, but it had an Error 80070490
I went online on my phone and I searched up the error and it had no results on the Error.

The problem is that I can't login, or reboot.
So I can't logon to fix the Error, and I can't reboot because of the error.

Well, I've got a bad problem. First off, my OS is XP, and the computer is about three years old with a new hard drive. My laptop fan was making strange grinding noise, so I took it upon myself to pull the computer apart and take a look. Everything was going fine until I pulled the cooling assembly off the motherboard... I oiled up the fan bushing and it didn't make the noise anymore when I sprayed it with the air compressor. Trying to line up the 500 pins of the CPU (I think?) when I was putting it back together was a bear. The first time I bent one of the corner prongs just getting it situated. Finally it popped down in place and I reinstalled everything else.
When I plugged the power supply in I could hear a faint high-pitched noise. When I pushed the power button the orange battery light would blink once and nothing else would happen. If I listened very carefully, when I pushed the power button the high-pitch noise with stop for a second and I would hear a real faint click. The click sounded like it was from the area of the CPU, but it's hard to tell. I am positive it's not coming from the hard drive.
Does anybody have any idea about what may have happened? If taking pictures would help, let me know!
Thank you,

This is a friends laptop but I can't resolve the problem.

He had a completely locked down laptop with the missing BCD file error and a blue screen. He doesn't have a windows recovery disc/usb. I downloaded a new Windows 10 to usb and managed to get it to repair, partially, enough to boot back into Windows 10. Unfortunately, it's still not running well. mouse click response is between 5 & 10 secs.

I'm trying to repair without him buying a new copy of Windows 10. There is also another issue. Out of frustration I decided to install a copy of Ubuntu Mate (dual Boot). The laptop won't boot from USb or from the DVD, have tried both after changing the boot order. The Ubuntu welcome screen shows then the PC shuts down.

the only reason I mention this is because I suspect that's what will happen if he does try and install a new copy of windows. Any thoughts?

It's Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-28R

This still amazes me that these two quick fixes took about 30 degrees off my laptop... I was having problems with my laptop randomly turning off. So bein the newb, I googled some key words a couple times. I found that probably too much dust or maybe the thermal glue was coming off cpu or somethin like that. Dust makes sense, cause I am in Baghdad doin contracting work.

Noticing this was a heat problem probably, I downloaded Speedfan and ran it. It showed 75 deg celcius.. I knew that was hot because earlier I read something about 40-50 bein sorta warm. I didn't think Speedfan was accurate, so I ran couple other programs that I found, they all gave same reading. At that point I turned the laptop off hehe

I took laptop apart, blew all the dust out of it, and ya there was a whole lotta dust in there. Took me good 10min just to clean it up. Put it back together. I also pulled out my Bytecc tray cooler that had been sitting in a box unused forever and put that under the laptop.

Powered on, noticed it was not blowing whole lotta hot air out the side of the laptop anymore, let it run, ran some applications and games. Then ran Speedfan again. To my surprise it showed 43deg celcius.

So that's my little story about a newb an his gaming laptop overheating. Maybe it'll help someone out there. If I'm still wrong and my laptop is still way too hot, I'd appreciate if somoene let me know, much thanks.

A:Gamin Laptop was overheating, how I easily fixed

Thank-you for the post (1st post too :grinthumb )

I would also advise that anyone attempting this, should have the manual available, and some hardware experience.
With special emphasis on Power and Antistatic precautions.

This preventative maintenance (ie your system was running, just hot)
Can be applied to PC's as well as laptops.
This may cure more than heat issues, but also power fluctuations and memory issues.

Please note: Preventative maintenance is now somewhat outdated. ie It is now recommended (say the last 5 Years) that users only try to fix faults when they arrive. Why? Because by cleaning out dust and checking connections it is possible to cause other issues (that would have normally not happened)
ie the antistatic issue, or even hardened connectors that can break, by re-connecting them.

Not to sound too hipocritical, but just about all techs remove the covers (mainly on PC's) on just about every fault (even if they are clearly software related) Why? Because they usually know what they are doing, and prefer to be thorough.

Well done :grinthumb

Since we have the same laptop, i'm guessing that installing the same drivers as you would most likely do it for me...

I have an HP 635, which has fixed mode switchable graphics. When I tried to update the drivers to my discrete Radeon HD 6370M through the latest driver pack exe for it off the AMD site, the installer displayed an error message in the end. An AMD representative told me that this was because my integrated 'AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250' did not support the latest drivers for the 6370M, and that the only way to properly update the drivers for the discrete GPU in such a case would be to disable the integrated one altogether, through the BIOS, but he said there are many laptop models on which this is impossible. What about mine? Or is there perhaps a different way out? Thanks in advance.

My little brother was angry with me and he spilled a quarter cup of warm water on my laptop, Lenovo Ideapad 110, HDD 500Gb, intel i3, I bought it about 2 weeks ago, when my brother threw the water on me, it all came on the keyboard, I immediately dried it with a paper towel, then with a cloth, then flipped it upside down to let it dry, I left it for 2 hours untouched and then made sure its dry, then i plugged it in to let it charge, becuase when the water was spilled on my laptop, it was at 6%, so i plugged and turned it on, it worked, but it showed me a black screen with nothing, i removed the charger and turned it on, it started up, but with a black screen, i then asked a relative that works in IT and stuff, he told me to dry it with a blow dryer, and leave it for 2 hours, i turned it on later and it gave me a blue screen with recovery, it had 2 options, whether i restart or go to advanced options, I restarted it and am now writing my question, is there any problems to come, keep in mind I am using a Lenovo Ideapad 110, HDD 500GB, intel i3 Windows 10, my relative instructed me to turn it off and leave it to charge til its 100%, so that it wont corrode, i really need to know if there are anythings to come, if so i need to get to my warranty and try to convince them that it was a hardware mistake (just kidding).

With regards Yazan

I followed HP web help EXACTLY and deleted a file via Device Manager because my laptop would not read the SD card. When the laptop rebooted, it incessantly looped to Windows Defense scanning and never booted to Win 10. Thanks to God that I had created a USB recovery. I was able to restore to a previous date and that works (it put back the file I had deleted).  AND, the reader works now...who knew? Whew!

I bought my T470 a month ago with "3 Years Onsite Next Business Day" warranty. And recenty I noticed there's some problem with my screen, so I called Lenovo. And I've already got the new screen they sent to me.Here is the problem: THE TECHNICIAN NEVER CAME!!! And they keep on saying they will come to fix my laptop "tomorrow", and I can't even remember how many "tomorrow"s have passed!!! What's worse, they would never call to tell you they are not coming on that day, so you need to call again and ask, and they will say they will come "tomorrow", and then they are not coming, and you need to call again. Here is the loop:while (1<2){    YouNeedToCall();    TheyWillSayTomorrow();}  Tl;dr: For my warranty, Can I just go to one of the local Lenovo Authorized Service Store to get my laptop fixed? I don't want to wasting time calling the technicians anymore. I tried to call lenovo today, and 30 mins passed all the agents were still busy lol! Thanks in advance!!!!!

I have a computer which I know to be infected because it was connected to another computer and that other computer started showing very similar aspects of malbehaviour. This latter computer has now been fixed (Thanks BP!) but the original still requires attention.

A friend's laptop will not access her Hotmail account. Time Warner cable serving our town was cut stopping all internet. It was repaired finally. All functions of internet returned to all of us except she cannot get her Hotmail account to respond on the laptop, and asked my help, which I will do this afternoon. She is able to access Hotmail on her phone from her wireless router, but not her computer, which is directly wired to router. No physical changes were made to her setup during the outage. What should I look for and try first? Many thanks. She is using Win 10.

Hi Guys,

I resolved to air my views and opinions on how I have been treated by Dell support centre/Dell over my inspiron 3148 which was purchased a while ago.
Less than 6months after the purchase this laptop coupled with intermittent usage of the PC, the keyboard stopped responding!
I  contacted the dell support centre and sent in the laptop based on warranty for the keyboard to be replaced. This is the 7th week its being there, making life unbearable and without communication on when I will get the PC back. I was initially told it will take 10 days for the keyboard to be repaired, today makes it 45th day.
I don't know Dell could do a laptop whose keyboard would go *** under 6 month talk less of being treated in the inhumanly way possible for an item under warranty.
My product tag is 70K4B32.

Any help or idea how I can get out of this mess!

A:Dell inspiron 3148 keyboard went bad less than 6month, yet getting laptop fixed under warranty is taking forever.

Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
Please private message us the details of the location you have sent the laptop for repair along with your email id.

I bought the ASUS Metal Black a few months back, which I am loving except for the fact that apparently it is HDMI 1.4 and not HDMI 2.0. It's a dedicated GTX 1050. I could really use the extra resolution for work purposes, but I'm not quite sure how to get this going.

Could I use a docking station or something? Or any other realistic way to do this without buying an entirely new laptop? Thanks.

A:Best way to get 4k resolution on my laptop

Also I will add that 1440p would be totally fine as well, it doesn't have to be full 4k if that makes a difference.

Hey guys new to the forum.

Just wondering if someone could help me out. I have a toshiba satelite a10 and I was wondering if theres a way to make the resolution higher than 1024 and have everything visable. If i make the monitor plug and play I can raise the resolution but I have to scroll over to see the other half of the screen. Is there anything I can do?

Thanx in advance!!

A:laptop resolution

Depends on the model, but likely does not support 1024x768 resolution. (800x600 max)
You can get technical data by entering your product id (laptop name and model) here:

you could try setting your gpu drivers to set the scaling instead of your display.

no idea what graphics you have as you didnt bother filling in your system specs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but you want to goto your graphics card display settings and look for something like "adjust desktop size and position" what your looking for specifically is "scaling" options you need to select an option that lets your graphic card drivers control scaling.

for example mine has few options one of which is "use my displays built in scaling" and one which states "use Nvidia scaling" I would choose the Nvidia option.

dont choose the option "fixed aspect ratio" or any option like that.

I recently bought a Dell E6510 laptop as a desktop replacement and so far I am very happy with my choice especially considering I got a Core I5 processor for not a lot of money. I also got the Dell Docking Station and I plan to set the computer up with an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor and this is where my question comes in.

The laptop I have has the lower resolution 15.6" display at 1366 x 768. When I bought my laptop I wasn't aware that the unit also offered resolutions of 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1080. Obviously I would have preferred the HD display but all in all I am very happy with the laptop and its capabilities.

My question is if I buy a 24" LED or LCD monitor and connect it to my laptop with a Displayport to DVI cable will I get the hi-def display on the 24" monitor? Input on this is appreciated. Thanks all.

If your graphic card is HD capable I don't see why not.

Are you still having this problem? If so, go to Control Panel | Display. Settings. Are you using 32-bit colour? Also, if you click on Advanced, and then Monitor, what is your Refresh rate set to?

This part:

gone into settings change them also advanced and change to none Click to expand...

What did you change to none?
