Q: T460 sound via HDMI with dockingstation, no sound via direct connection to HDMI port

I have a new HDMI monitor connected to my Lenova T460s through the HDMI port on the laptop as the docking station doesn't have an HDMI port. There is no sound coming through the Lenova speakers or when connecting the headphone jack to external speakers. Any thoughts??? Rogertom

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I've a strange problem with the sound output via HDMI. If my T460 is connected to a dockingstation and my monitor is connected to the station via HDMI cable I've sound output from the speakers. So everything works fine and I can also the monitor as device for sound outpu at the sound options. Then I change only one thing at my setup. I directly connect the monitor with the same HDMI cable directly to the HDMI port of my notebook. The video signal is still transmitted perfectly but the sound is gone. Also the device for sound is gone from the sound options. I've only graphics from the intel on board chip and all drivers are uptodate. I also reinstalled them several times. What can I do to solve this problem? Always use the dockingstation is no option, because I also want to connect the notebook to a TV or so and I can't carry a dockingstation with me all the time. Thanks for help!

the HDMI sound is most likely off your GPU but that series seems to not have a HDMI port so that is odd. If you can make sure your onboard audio is on in your BIOS and also run the tool on this page so that you can update all your system info for us. System Info - See Your System Specs

So, the other day I decided to finally bring my parents into the 21st century and show them the wonders of HDMI... They were amazed. Anyway I plug the cable in and everything goes swimmingly. Until someone (my mom) decides that she wants the TV back to normal. So instead of switching the input on our multisystem TV, she pulls the HDMI cable (quite harshly) out of my computer, by the cable not the plug portion. I'm not sure what she did or how she did it... but my computer stopped reading its own speakers. I freaked and restarted the laptop. It came back on and it read the internal speakers again. Everything seemed okay, until yesterday when I tried to plug the HDMI back in. Now, it wont read the HDMI cable for audio. It transmits the picture, but the sound doesn't come out of the TV it comes out of my computer. I tried going to the speaker tab and opened the mixer, nothing was muted. I opened the device manager and it said HDMI audio was installed, opened that up and it said the device was working properly. I tried opening up the audio window to see if I could manually switch to HDMI and the option wasn't even there. I plugged in my headphones and they work just fine. I'm at a loss here. I'm beginning to think a pin was pulled out along with the HDMI cable the first time. But I don't know if its possible to replace just the HDMI port... Gah... Help me please...

First question that I really need an answer for if possible!
I have an HP DX6100MT that i got from work - i installed an NVidia 9600 GT Graphics card. Thing is, in order to play sound from the pc onto my Sony LCD, i apparently need to connect the SPDIF. Fine, no probs, except - i dont seem to have an spdif port on the motherboard - i've looked and looked and nothing seems even remotely similar. I'm wondering if i'm going blind! Can anyone help - could it look or be called anything else? is it even possible that a computer that is like only 3 years old doesnt have an spdif out?

Using an XPS Studio 16 recently the HDMI port I have been using to connect my laptop to my speakers has been acting up. After connecting to my speakers the output automatically shifts to the speakers, however there is no audio. When I open the volume control panel it shows audio output being sent to the speakers. So far, the only thing that has resolved this issue is a restart, however after restarting no settings changed from the time when the issue occurred.

I have made sure my speakers are searching for input from the port I have connected it to.

Any help would be appreciated. Also, tell me any information I need to give you in order to help you, help me.

Yesterday, I bought a 10m HDMI cable and I plug it from my TV to my CPU. Everything was fine. The only thing was one of the games which requires Port COM1 and COM2 could not access.

I tried disabling the HDMI sound and it worked. Is there any way to change the COM port for the HDMI sound? I tried going settings on Windows and could not find any.

I just need the sound because it's a music game, from the Arcade. Everything was perfect before plugging my computer to the HDMI.

I've had my laptop connected to a TV through HDMI for years and it suddenly stopped working. The HDMI output is no longer listed as a playback device. It now shows spdif digital out via HP dock. The picture is fine but there is no sound. Also when you go to the playback settings screen the green lights are jumping next to the spdif which is set as default but there is no sound. I have tried everything if you do a Google search on this topic it seems like it is a common problem but there is no specific solution. I believe the HDMI playback device disappeared after the last Windows 10 update. The HDMI is not under hidden devices but it is listed under audio in the control panel.

I have just upgraded from vista to windows 7 home premium.
On vista, I could watch downloaded programs and movies on my LCD TV through a hdmi lead. I just plugged it in and it worked, with the sound coming through the TV and the stereo speakers ( which are connected to the tv).

Now, I only get sound through the laptop, and not through the TV. I have tried a new hdmi cable, I have checked all the settings for sound and it says all are working fine. I have tried updating the drivers, which are all up to date. Nothing seems to work. I can put up with watching programs with the sound from the laptop, but I have found that even with the speakers on 100%, they are not as loud as when the OS was vista.

Does anyone have any ideas?

A:no sound through hdmi connection

On many PC's you have to set the HDMI as the "default playback" device in order to get audio in the HDMI output. I don't know if that is the case with yours but something to consider. The Sound Panel, where you would set this, is in the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound/Sound. In my desktop the HDMI output is listed as the "ATI High Definition Audio Device".

Ok, when I connect my HP DV6 laptop to my Samsung TV the picture works fine but the sound comes through on the laptop only, not the TV.

The problem is that I don't seem to have the driver for HDMI audio output, see the below picture:

Now, a friend came over today and he has a Dell laptop with EXACTLY the same graphics card (ATI HD 4570), he used the HDMI cable with my TV and the sound comes through fine.

I looked at his playback devices and he had an extra sound driver called "ATI High Definition Audio Device". I do not have such device. I do not have this device after downloading and installing the same "Catalyst Control Center" again and again and again and again. I am tired of seeing this damn control center as it never installs the driver I need.

I just need one, one measley driver to have sound and ATI has completely failed me at this, their control centre regularly crashes when I try and install it and my display sometimes crashes too.

A:No sound with HDMI connection.

Where are you downloading the ATI driver from? The ATI website or the HP website?

I have a HP DV6, but it has a Intel card instead and the HDMI sound device lists+works fine. You should get all the updated drivers for your DV6 model from the HP website if you haven't done so already. With that aside, have you checked the 'Sound, video and game controllers' in the device manager? Do you see or not see a 'HD Audio HDMI' listed there? If it's listed, does it have a yellow warning symbol against it?

Did you check the IDT HD sound control panel? (it's in the task bar, my DV6 has that) to see if it mentions your HDMI int. and its settings?

I've just built my first computer, and everything works fantastic, except that when I connect my PC to my HDTV through HDMI, I get a crystal clear display but no sound. I can plug in headphones and hear everything that way, but that is my only option right now.

It is curious because I have installed a Radeon HD 5450 video card with an HDMI port. I installed the DVD driver (Version A8.98W) and the visual sizing was fixed, but like I said no audio. I've checked the playback devices, and my TV seems to be listed as "AMD HDMI Output", which wont play sound (even if I set it as the default device) . I've also checked the Device manager and seen that "AMD High Definition Audio Device" is listed under "Sound, video, and game controllers".

The only way to play sound is to disable the AMD HDMI Output and plug in headphones so that the audio is playing on what the PC thinks is speakers.

Anybody ever seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No Sound with HDMI connection

Get the latest driver from AMD for that card. See if that changes anything. It is supposed to have audio built on the card and if its not outputting the audio, I would say the card is defective.

Hi all,

I have a Dell XPS 8900 desktop with Windows 10. I am using an Insignia TV for display, and am using an HDMI connection. The display and audio works as it should like this. However, what I am trying to do is connect a set of desktop speakers to the computer for a quadrophonic setup. After reviewing the sound settings in control panel, I realize that the HDMI connection only supports a stereo setup. So, I got a 3.5mm audio line from the audio in port on the TV to the computer. When I do this with the desktop speakers also plugged in to the sound card, I can only hear sound out of the desktop speakers. This is after setting the default device to be speakers/headphones. I thought this was the right setting since the other audio devices (display audio and HDMI audio) only have stereo support.

The 4 speaker sound setup works when using a VGA cable for the display, which leads me to believe the issue is that when using HDMI the TV is not recognizing the additional audio input when I run a line from it to the computer. I have tried using both the HDMI port on the graphics card and the other HDMI port on the computer. I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing, or if it's even possible when using HDMI to have a secondary audio input for the TV?

A:PC to TV connection - Quadrophonic sound with HDMI

The HDMI is expecting Audio - so the TV will turn off the other Audio inputs on the TV
hence the reason its not working
I dont know of a way to get around that , as the TV hardware/firmware will dictate that when choosing from the different AV inputs

VGA is video only , and so the TV is expecting audio to be present on the audio tv inputs and turns them on

If the TV has an audio out - then the sound will come out via those connections - BUT it will not be encoded for any surround sound 5.1/7.1 - just stereo

When I connect a TV through HDMI the sound is not re-routed to the TV. The TV sound is also not appearing in the Playback Devices of the Sound  control panel in the bottom right corner. In order to make it worked I need to do the following :- Connect the HDMI cable and ensure the TV screen is displaying the laptop screen.- Put the Laptop on Sleep- Resume the laptop. in  90% of the case then the sound is re-routed to the tv but it is a bit of pain to do it every time. If it does not work I put the laptop to sleep again. Any idea how to make it worked all the time. It worked like a charm on my X1 1st generation. Thanks,Laurent

P.S-I have picture over HDMI but no sound.

Thanks!!!! :)

A:Qosmio X70-A-12X - no sound using HDMI connection

I have checked Toshiba download page and as I can see your Qosmio machine is supported for Win7 64bit and I think you use this version.
As I can see there are offered all important drivers like chipset driver, display driver or sound driver so I hope everything works well and there is no reason for drivers experiments.

I would like to know if there is some problem when you use your machine without connecting anything to it? is everything OK with hardware? Can you hear sound on internal speakers or headphones?

Back to your HDMI issue: can you please explain to us what you try to do exactly?
Do you try to use your Qosmio with TV or what? When you open sound properties > playback devices have you tried to enable listed digital output device (HDMI) and set it to default?

By the way:
Click also on volume icon in the taskbar and click on option MIXER.
Is digital output listed there? Check it in option device. Be sure it is not set to mute.

Play a bit with all these settings to be sure everything is OK.

I have a Acer aspire 5536 laptop with ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics card which i connect to my Pansonic TX-L37G20B LCD Tv via the HDMI output on a regular basis to watch films etc. I have had no problems with the connection since the day i bought the TV and have been happlily using it for the last 2 years.

A couple of days ago i connected the laptop to TV as usual and changed to the correct HDMI channel and got nothing. I disconnecetd the lead and reconnected but still no picture or sound on the TV. I tested the HDMI cable and Tv input by connecting the lead to my XBOX and it worked perfectly.

When i connect the lead to the laptop the screen goes blank for a second and i hear the connection sound as normal however no picture on the TV.

I have checked the display settings and the TV is listed under monitors. I have tried all settings eg extend display, duplicate etc.. and it appears to work correctly but i cannot get a picture or sound on the TV. I did think maybe this problem was due to a recent windows update so i have run a system restore to a previous time when this worked, but no joy. I have also unistalled the old graphics card drivers and installed the new ones from the AMD web site and again nothing.

Can anyone offer any help or suggestions of what else i can try or do ? I am running out of ideas.

Many thanks for your help.

I've read on a few sites of these issues being fixed by enabling the HDMI Audio Output in the Control Panel audio settings. Another thing you can try is cloning the display using the function (FN) keys on your laptop. One more thing to check is power settings, GPU may be disabling HDMI out to save power.

I just built an HTPC wiith Vista64 SP1 and am having a problem. I have a DFI LanParty X58-T3H6 motherboard and a VisionTek Radeon HD 4870 Video card with HD audio. I have an HDMI cable going to my Sony AV receiver and all I get is Stereo Audio. The subwoofer never comes out of standby nor does the AV receiver indicate anything but a stereo input.

I have the RealTek HDMI audio device installed and it says it is working properly under Device Manager. Under properties all that is offered is Stereo speakers. Surround Sound is shown as an option but it is grayed out and not selectable. All drivers are up to date as of two days ago, and I have the on-board sound of the motherboard disabled in its BIOS.

Other HDMI devices, such as my XBOX 360, do surround sound through the Sony AV receiver.

VisionTek support told me to install the HDMI RealTek driver, but that's all the help they've been able to give me.

If anyone has some additional insight on this, it would be most appreciated!

Thank you!

A:Surround Sound option Grayed out with HD4870 and HDMI connection

Honestly I think that HDMI can sometimes be flaky. I know you said the 360 works fine, but a PC is another animal entirely. I've Never used a HDMI connection to carry BOTH vid/sound FOR THE PC (will run HDMI for vid, but always run separate sound).

If your PC is close to the AV receiver.....A suggestion just to test is -- enable the MB sound and run a cable from the MB to your receiver (digital Optical [toslink] OR coax digital) if you have it, or you can do 3.5mm analog with a Y cable that is 3.5mm to RCA.

How To Connect Your PC to Your Home Stereo or Home Theater | Hardware Secrets

See if that works & then you know the bottleneck is the HDMI somehow & maybe drivers will fix it later, but for now you have (separate) sound that works.

Brand new Windows 7 Home Premium (6 bit) computer. When I click on the Sound control panel item, sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes to open. But that's kind of minor (although I'd like to know how to fix it), because sometimes the HDMI sound to my HDTV works fine, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. The only sure fix is to reboot the computer, which isn't really what I want to do every time I want sound coming from the HDTV speakers.

More details: if I reboot the computer, and then switch from the monitor to the HDTV for my video output, I can open the Sound control panel (opens at normal speed) and then I select the HDTV to be the default sound device; and everything is good. At some point, I stop watching the HDMI output to the HDTV, switch the video to my main monitor, and the sound now comes out of the computer speakers. Great. That's what I want. I can even turn off the HDTV, come back 20 minutes later, switch the video back to the HDTV and the sound goes through the HDTV speakers. Switch back and forth a couple of times and everything works as expected. Great. That's what I want.

But at some later point in time, it stops working, and I don't know what triggers this. At this later point in time, I switch the video from the monitor to the HDTV, but now the sound remains with the computer speakers, if I try to open the sound control panel, it takes 1-2 minutes, and when it finally opens the sound control panel no longer lets me select the HDTV to be the default soun... A:Sound Control panel takes 2 minutes to open; HDMI sound inconsistent

I had the slow opening sound panel/playback section for a while. I tried several things and all of a sudden the problem went away. Not sure what fixed it but I have updated the AMD video card drivers several times, no audio driver updates. The only common point is that I too have an AMD video card (HD7770).

In most cases, if the PC "speakers" (sound card) is set as the default audio playback device and then an HDMI cable is plugged into the PC it will automatically switch to the HDMI sound (and make it the default playback device), and if the cable is disconnected it automatically switches back to the speakers. If you are having problems accessing the sound panel, this is another option (for most) until you get the slow opening panel issue resolved.

Windows 8.1 Pro, 64-bit. I finally got video and sound to come out both the mobo and the NVidia video/HDMI card.
MOBO is Foxconn G41MXE. Sound system on mobo is NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition audio Controller, by Intel.
Video Card is GeForce GTX 550 Ti, with NVidia GF116 High Definition Audio Controller. Video card has HDMI output
connected to TV set, containing both video and sound. (Video from NVidia goes to both monitor and TV.)
Windows 8.1 with all updated drivers, as far as i know, based on two driver update apps. In Windows, there is
a significant delay between the audio coming from the mobo sound to the local speakers and the sound out of the
TV set. In PCLinuxOS on the same machine, there is hardly any delay. It is thus painful to watch a movie or a Youtube performance with any kind of speech or singing on Windows, due to the lack of lip-sync.
I need to know of there is a fix for this, and if so, where do I find it, or can somebody please post it here?

Thanx for your assistance--doug

A:mobo sound and HDMI sound not synced in Windows 8.1

You are using two separate "sound cards" (chips) at the same time (one in the Video Card and one on the motherboard). The processing in the chip can cause a delay or out of sync. Windows is designed to only have one default audio playback device. Circumventing that can cause problems, such as you hear.

I'm using my 4870 to send video and audio to my reciever to watch movies and such on my tv from my computer (through HDMI).

What I'm wondering is can I make windows media player be the only device that uses the video card sound?

What I would like to do is be able to have a movie playing (on my tv from the computer) and have the sound go through my speakers. Then be able to do everything else (games, music, etc) using my sound card.

Any ideas?

Yesterday I installed a new external hard drive - following the installation - my sound no longer played through my television (video is fine, HDMI connection) and sound now comes ONLY through the laptop speakers.

The option for HDMI Audio doesn't appear in the 'sound' menus. I have 'checked' "shoe disabled" and "show disconnected" in those menus.
Basic Specs:

Windows 7/64bit

IDT High Definition Audio Codec

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4250

I have tried the following fixes gleaned from other forum posts on similar forum posts:

Uninstalling and reinstalling IDT drivers - didn't work.

HP driver 'recovery manager' to install 'original' IDT audio codecs - didn't work.

Unistalled ATI Video Drivers , and reinstalled them - didn't work

System Restore to a week ago - didn't work.

I use my HD TV as my primary monitor for gaming, so having sound through laptop speakers and not TV is quite annoying.

Perhaps my only solution is another sound card?

A:no sound through tv via hdmi, sound plays through laptop speakers (idt

So you're trying to get audio to play on your TV from your laptop? Since you said the video is fine it's obviously not the video drivers. It sounds like the sound output is configured wrong. I don't think it would be labeled as HDMI. HDMI is just DVI with HD Audio. Try altering your sound settings to see what you can get.

Audio is a very difficult thing to diagnose and fix.

So I've got a problem,I changed my case 2 days ago and everything went great, all working as it should be.Up until an hour ago, when the lid got stuck in one of the little clips so after a quick bang it went in.But then I lost my picture on both monitors.
So I went to investigate,I ended up moving the GPU over to the other 16x slot and it is now fine.
but since then I've lost all sound through either the front or rear jacks,It is saying that the speakers are not connected.I've done all the usual checks,as in default devises, drivers.Everything I can think of I have done.I have tried a new cable, and tested through both of my phones and the speakers work fine.I've also tried a few sets of headphones in both jacks. There is a faint hiss sound when I turn the speakers on,that has just started.
I have managed to get sound through my tv via HDMI,but every time,I go into audio manager and lets say change from soft to hard,I loose the sound again, and have to set the HDMI as default again.this too has just started.
I'm using the on board realtek audio sound card ,on an Asus p8z77-lx motherboard.
Just a quick note when I plug in the jack, there is no beep and the pop up screen does not appear as normal.
To me it is pointing towards a motherboard problem, with the 2 problems happening together.Any help would be great.

A:No sound through speakers.Jack not being detected.HDMI sound only?

Hiyya Paul mate sounds like (no pun intended) that thump dislodged something on the board just carefully move the I/O output block and see if there is any movement, could be something a simple as dry joint but which is going to be hard to find and fix.

If you have some warranty and I know it is a PITA having to reef it all out again but.....

Personally I have the P8Z77-V and I just stuck an Asus Xonar DG card in the thing and there is no comparison really and you get one heck of a control centre. Not expensive I don't know about where you are but out here $35 so both my Ivy and Sandy Bridges have them.

I am so confused. Is my Lenovo 3000 N500 4233 63U HDMI compatible? Why it has the port, why the BIOS recommened/installed is NON-HDMI (version 1.10 BIOS 6GET19WW) and why it doesn't work when connected to any Tv with HDMI capability?  Should i downgrade to 1.09. I m running Windows 10 since July 2015 and ...this is another issue which probably will force mesoon to go back to Windows 7, the last update installed successful for windows 10 was Sep 2015; ever since, all the updates don't install, don't download sometimes, whatever adivse i followed, no windows update can be installed. Thank you so much Vera

My XPS 8700 doesnt have a NVidia HDMI port. What  are my options to fix this if I want to connect to my monitor using an HDMI cable (without using adapters of course)? Is there a way to connect to my monitor via the HDMI port located in the middle left of the model? What is the latter HDMI port used for if it cant  connect to a tv/pc monitor?

I want to use 2 displays using HDMI, but the only problem is that when I plug in my HDMI to my TV through the motherboard, it does not work. I know some do not support it which is why I am coming here. My mother board and graphics card are in my account so look there for the details on my computer. Thank you

A:Can I use my motherboard HDMI port as well as my graphics card HDMI?

I've seen a number of computers where the addition of an Add-in Video card automatically disabled the onboard adapter. The only thing that worked to restore the onboard adapter was to remove that Add-in card. You may want to consider getting a different Add-in card that has 2 HDMI ports. Or if your motherboard has 2 PCIe X16 slots get a 2nd matching card.

Hello Forum I´ve got a Dockingstation for my old Compaq 6910p to connect the DS to my HDTV via DVI to HDMI.Woks fine but there is no Sound. MY GPU is the Radeon X2300.MY Compaq has no DVI or HDMI.I dont wanna miss the digital Sound. The DVI at the DS is a DVI Dual Link.

A:Compaq 6910p + Dockingstation = No Audio via DVI to HDMI

I recently done a new build, not with the same specs I have on here;
i5 2500k
p8z77-m pro
sapphire radeon 6870

I cannot get any sound through the front+back headphone jacks, realtek doesnt detect any audio devices, however i can mess around with the settings to get windows to say i have speakers+mic and 2nd audio devices plugged regardless if anything is plugged in or not. I have tried everything!

A:No sound via audio jacks, but sound via hdmi.

Hiyya and welcome aaron mate sure the board is hooked up right?
Otherwise drivers? or failing that a decent sound card I use a cheap Asus Xonar DG which gives excellent audio and mixing features but my next build is having the Asus Xonar DS or DX .

Another option would be one of those card readers in a front bay but am surprised you cannot get sound off the board connections?
