I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Were working fine yesterday. Today I return home and find computer had mysteriously turned itself on. Mouse not working but keyboard allows me to try to shut down. Taking very long time so shut down with power button.

Now my keyboard and mouse both do not work on Windows login screen. Same for safe mode. Before this, in BIOS, other screens can get to by holding down keys as computer starts, keyboard works.

As Windows loads, can see keyboard illumination switches off. Same for mouse laser. My other USB peripherals (extra HD and wireless thingy) still have lights on. Fairly new computer. Cost me ?300 new about 6 months ago.

I tried to 'roll back' Windows - there was only one option - for when I installed Itunes maybe a week ago, but that failed.

I chacked inside and outside the case to see if there's any sockets for PS/2 keyboards, but there aren't any.

Any idea what's going on? Thanks for any help.

A:USB keyboard and mouse do not work once Windows starts

If you can not open the BIOS screen with USB keyboard, use a PS/2 keyboard for the setting.

Open the BIOS screen and enable Legacy support for USB keyboard and mouse. This should do the trick.

Basically my keyboard works when it starts. I can press F8 or Esc to go into the windows startup menu. However when (even in safe mode) it starts up it asks for Ctrl+Alt+Del. Here my keyboard is non responsive. I've had this issue before and used to solve it with windows restore settings to a previous date through safe mode, however this time i can't get into safe mode because clever windows felt like making it so secure.
Also the option of going back to previously good settings after pressing F8 desnt help. I've tried all sorts of boot disks made on my other computer but nothing seems to get it to that BIOS screen. As i said the buttons work before windows starts up just i cant do anything useful with them. Oh and i dont have an XP Pro CD either... would that help? how do i restore mysetings to a previous date?

Hi andrew99 and welcome to TSF !

Is this a laptop or a desktop ?

If it's a desktop, is that keyboard PS/2, usb or wireless ? What's its brand and model ? Try with another PS/2 keyboard and report if you have the same problems.

If it's a laptop, what model is it ?

Without more details about your motherboard, it sounds like your memory is not seated properly, or you damaged it when you took it out.

On occasion my computer after being shut off will have issues starting back up. The computer itself seems to start well enough with lights and fans starting up but neither monitor, keyboard, or mouse is functional with the mouse and keyboard appearing appearing to not be getting any power. I've tried plugging the computer into another outlet or using another power strip and while both of those worked sometimes the issue appears again later. I'm wondering now if this is a battery issue or something wrong with the motherboard?

Once the computer has started it runs without issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

You are posting in a hardware forum and no one [other than you] has any idea what hardware you are running. Post ALL of your exact system specs; this will help with some of the specs.

I currently have Fedora Core 5 running on my PPC computer, and I was attempting to install FreeBSD for my network device, but during the installation my mouse and keyboard wouldnt work, so I reset the computer, and then I couldnt put in an option for what I wanted to boot. So now I can't boot off any cds or log in at all. I reset the CMOS just to see if it would change anything but no luck.

Should I take the drive out and format it on another computer?

The problem isn't the mouse. The problem is with the files on disk. They are corrupted.
Did you had a power failure or a freeze system earlier?
Fat 32 isn't the appropriate file system for the OS. It should be formatted as NTFS.
Do you have the Win XP installation disk?

So he installed a bunch of software even though he does not know what it is? There's the problem. Seriously though. OK let's see, it's a Dell PC. Try to find the Dell Operating system or restore disc. If you do not have it, call them up and ask for one. Also usually PC manufacturers put a recovery partition on the Hard drive. Look for a message when booting that says something like "Press F11 for recovery" or "F12 for boot options". Something along those lines. Dell's website should have the specifics on this. Since you cannot use the keyboard I really cannot suggest anything because it all requires the keyboard.

Hi
I am new to this site and hope somebody can help me.
Today I attempted to install a Fujitsu siemens (FS) Port Replicator onto my (FS) laptop and plugged in the usb mouse, keyboard and printer all of which worked perfectly on this and other computers when I did so an error came up and none of the plugged in usb devices worked. I unplugged the devices and restarted the pc but still none of them worked. I tried them all in 2 other pcs and find that they do not get recognised in any machine even though the keyboard lights up and the printer is online and set to default. I have never previously had any problems. I have tried using a different cable for the printer to no avail and even tried re installing the drivers on one of the pcs. The printer still copies but will not respond t any requests from the pc.
Please advise?? Is it possible to reset all of the devices in case the software has caused problems?
Many thanks
John

Well now you say your keyboard and mouse only works in bios but what you don't tell is what (exactly) is your keyboard and mouse.

What mouse and keyboard are you using?:?

Do you have a PS2 keyboard?

Hello and welcome to TSF! First what is the model number of your computer, how old is it? If This can be due to an overheating issue first try cleaning out all air vents with a can of air if you have a laptop. If you have a desktop take the side panel off and clean out all dust from the fans and heat sink.

We will go from there first. Let us know if the results are better or not.

Hi folks.

Yesterday night I turned off my computer by pressing the power button and now my mouse and keyboard do not work anymore(in Windows). I wanted to see if it was just the mouse/keyboard itself, but I noticed nothing detects when I connect a USB device. I tried plugging it in every port and it's the same. I thought it was a hardware issue, but now I realize that it is not.

I restarted my computer and tried to get into safe mode; it worked(I was able to go up and down to select which mode I wanted to enter). Once inside safe mode and windows is loaded, the keyboard just freezes. It does not work at all. I then decided to go into bios to see what is up and everything seems right. I even screwed around and messed up my overclock settings.

So now I know my keyboard still works and it's probably a Windows issue. I wanted to see if my mouse would work. I went into Windows Repair(I might have gotten the name wrong) and voila, my mouse worked! I'm not sure if it's a virus or what not, but can someone kindly help me?

Thank you.

ps. I do not have any system restore save points unfortunately.

Hey guys, I finally got my Internet up... I'm having problems with an old computer my dad gave me, it didn't come with a model number or anything, but it looks like an old Microsoft computer... Anyways, the specs are:

-AMD Athlon 750Mhz processor
-CMOS (when I hit DEL to enter BIOS... I never used CMOS sooo...)

Well, really, I can't get any more than that...

The problem is, when I turn it on, I put in a 32 bit black edition of windows XP Professional, and when I bring up the boot screen, my keyboard doesn't work anymore! Hell, even when I just turn it on, the keyboard and mouse die on me! I've managed to get to the login screen, but I get a few screens saying I may have been a victim of illegitimate XP sales and they want me to activate the version of XP I have on (Not sure what kind it is.). And at the boot screen, my mouse fails, along with my keyboard, so I can't do anything!

I need some help with this guys, despite being a 4-5 year old computer, it's apparently decent for high-end 2006ish games, while my Acer laptop can barely handle San Andreas. I also wanted something to keep myself occupied for a while, but now it's more than that, I need to do this.

EDIT: Damn, I can't do anything now, when I get into CMOS my keyboard dies...

hi
I have this strange issue.

I am using a razor usb keyboard and a razor usb mouse and they worked fine. Until I moved and after unpacking the pc both keyboard and mouse turn off when windows7 starts.
They both do work in the boot sequence.
And they do work when I start windows in safe mode.

Same is true for my cintiq, which also uses the usb port to connect.

I already went into the bios screen, and the usb legacy support is enabled.
I am not sure if I have Win7Sp1 installed or not.

any help greatly appreciated.
thanks
B.

Click Start, right-click Computer/My Computer/My PC and choose Properties, will give what is needed. And it should show either Windows 7 and the version name such as Ultimate or Windows 7 Service Pack 1. There is no SP2, yet.

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook running XP Home SP2. It boots ok and windows starts ok to the desktop but then both the mouse and keyboard are dead. I've tried booting from the OS disk and the keyboard works fine using the recovery console. I've tried a safe boot, last good config option, a usb mouse and I have an HP docking station for this notebook using an Ir mouse and keyboard and they won't work either. I've read other similar posts here but no help from those solutions. If I have to reload the OS, I could use help on saving the data. Can you tell me what the default mouse and keyboard driver filenames are and the command line to expand them from the OS recovery disk? Any Suggestions?

Hi,
I've got a strange but probably stupidly simple problem with an old all in one desktop I am playing around with a the moment.
After it is shut down every time I touch the mouse he computer powers up and starts which is a bit of a pain when dusting etc.
I think it may be as simple as some check box that has been clicked but I don't know.
It is running windows XP Pro SP2.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

In the bios, probablly under the APM (advanced pwer management) screen You will find something called "Wake on mouse". Disable it.

I cant figure this out, my computer starts up but my monitor wont come on. I have had this problem now 3 times in 2 years. I've replaced motherboard, memory, power supplies, and changed video cards. I currently have a k-7 fsb 400 motherboard with amd sempron processor, 350 watt power supply, geforce 5200 ddr 64mb graphics card, kingston 512 ddr memory, wd cavier 7200rpm hard drive, and a dell monitor. everything starts on computer but monitor wont. yet monitor does on my friends computers. i've reseated the memory twice, tried differant hard drive, tried differant video card and power supply. still nothing. It must be the motherboard right? I just bought motherboard 4 months ago.

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.
