Safe Mode Utility Program

Q: Safe Mode Utility Program

I have used this small free utility and it is good.BootSafe - Step by StepDownload BootSafe and save it to your Desktop (or any location of your choice) Double click the BootSafe icon to start the program Select which Safe Mode you wish to boot - Minimal, Networking (typical), or Repair Click the Reboot button Once you have booted into Safe Mode, you can perform any actions needed, such as scanning for viruses, spyware, adware, malware or repairing a system component When you have completed your tasks, simply run BootSafe again and select the Normal Restart option and click the Reboot button and your computer will reboot in Normal Mode Safe Mode

Preferred Solution: Safe Mode Utility Program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any popups or banners with the program? How long have you been using it?

I just ran across this little utility on another forum. For those of you that find it hard to get into "Safe Mode", for whatever reason. Just download it to your desktop, click on it & you can get into "Safe Mode- Minimal", "Safe Mode-Networking", or "Safe Mode-Directory Services Repair". I've been experimenting with it just for a little while now, but it seems to work as it say's it does. With no spyware, adware, etc...
Very Handy!!

Not sure what's going on but unless I'm in safe mode I can't open any programs. All the usual programs I have that start when I boot up just didn't open including AVG. I try to open firefox, IE, WoW, WMP, but nothing happens. I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit edition.

A:I can't open any program unless I'm in safe mode

The SFC may be of some use too. Click Start/ All Programs/ Accessories
Right click on the Command Prompt option, on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option
If you haven?t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn?t!) you will be asked for authorization. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.

Start the System File Checker

In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow, press Enter
You?ll see ?the system scan will begin?.

The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files. You will be asked to insert your Vista DVD if it?s needed.

Close the Command Prompt Window when the job is finished.

Hey guys, my graphics card has packed it in so I can only access my desktop in safe mode at the moment. There is a music program I have that I am having trouble opening. When I double click on the program icon the program doesnt open, so if I click on it again an error pops up saying the program is already open. When I open task manager the program does not appear under the application header but it does appear under the processes header. Would anyone have any idea how I can actually get the program to open up? Thanks a lot

A:Cant access program in Safe Mode

It sounds like the program is just not designed to run in safe mode.

When running in safe mode Windows loads the minimal amount of generic drivers. In this case it sounds like all drivers\components required by the program are being loaded. There probably is not a work around.

I have been using Pixarra Twisted Brush for almost a year. Art program. One day I clicked on it and the start image appeared and then was gone. No matter what I did it wouldn't start so deleted it and downloaded again. Same problem. Was advised from TB to start in safe mode and see if program would start, it did which, I guess, means I have a conflict but how do I know what to do next. I have deleted the program several times but when I go to reinstall it says it already exists do I want to install. I click yes. I backed my computer up a month and tried that but no luck. I am not, obviously, computer savvy. Can anyone help me so I can understand.

I'm running Vista Premium Home 32 and have 141.3 GB on my hard drive.

Thanks, Charlotte

A:Program won't start except in safe mode

Hello Charlotte,

Please try the following, install free Revo Uninstaller - Uninstall or remove programs, which you cannot uninstall, once more install the Pixarra and uninstall it with the Revo, which should get rid of all traces of the Pixarra from your computer.
When done, try to install your Pixarra again as the administrator. I mean, right click the setup and select Run As Administrator. Also you can try to run this software as the administrator, perhaps your antivirus or Window Defender block this application from running.

Guess, it's helpful...

An old windows program only runs in safe mode in Win 7, but worked fine in XP. The start up exe file looks for a set of files in a sub-directory, but it seems as if something in Win 7 is directing it to another directory. There is no ini file as far as I can see, and it works just fine in Win 7 safe mode. Could Win 7 be forcing the exe file to look at some other default directory which does not happen in safe mode? Is there any TRACE that could show me where the program is looking so I can move the files there?

Hi. I'm new to the forum, so I hope that someone can help.... (Thanks in advance...)

I'm running Vista SP1 on an Acer 4330 laptop. I can't uninstall Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 (Trialware), no matter what I do!

When I tried to uninstall it (from an admin account), I got the message "The language of this installation package is not supported by your system"

I would like to uninstall the program because I already use Office 2003, and don't want to purchase 2007.

Icouldn't do anything from my admin account, so I went to Safe Mode, but got the same result.
How can I get rid of this program?

I am trying to make a program automatically load along with the basic drivers and files windows loads in safe mode.
I've seen several people doing it, so how can I do it?

A:Automatic program load in safe mode

You should have a complete backup of your system so that you can re-image it in case you brick the computer.

The steps that you need to take depend on what the program is and how the program works. What is the program that you want to automatically run while in the safe mode?

If the program that you want to add to the safe mode is a service, then this info might help:

Hi all!
I have a program on my W7 computer called Family tree maker 2005. Up to abt. 6 months ago it would start within seconds when I clicked the icon. In the last 2 or 3 months it takes about a minute for the hour glass to stop and for the program to come up. Any idea what I might do to get it back working the way it used to.

A:W7 program slow to start except in safe mode

You can do a clean boot and open a few startup programs and services at a time, relaunching Family Tree each time you add a few items. This would narrow down the process or service.
Edit: Because the program launches in Safe Mode I believe you have a conflict. Perhaps your security suite or some other program that starts at boot.

Here's the problem. Without installing as a service, how can I get the compiled script to run automatically when the machine reboots into safe mode with command prompt? Which startup locations does safe mode with command prompt allow to run?
I know, it's probably pretty simple. But, I'm a bit sick of googling.

This is for a anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware tool/macro/script I'm creating.

This is the general idea and flowchart, the order may change a bit: The main script will be compiled as a exe.

1: Write to the registry to make the next boot safe mode:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

3. Shutdown and reboot using the cmd: SHUTDOWN -r -t 01
To allow command prompt only.

4. Start the windows installer service: using SafeMSI

5. Autorun a script which will mirror scripts from a ftp site using wget for windows into a temp directory. The tool will then create a txt file of the newly moved script files using the command dir > dir.txt , This it will use to create a chain of scripts/macros to run one after another, The scripts will use a command line bittorent client, and wget for windows to download other tools. Then the scripts will automate the installers, grab updates, and scan with them.
6. The tool will add a entry to the run-once registry key to start the last part of the tool when the machine reboots.

7. The tool will then add to the registry t... Read more

A:Run program automatically upon safe mode reboot

Got it.

The answer was to use a freeware application to set the compiled script as a service, then using regmon find the keys that changed and create a reg file to enter the specific info into the registry under the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot subkeys. The interesting thing is that I can use one reg script to remove the keys and then rewrite them with another, that way I delete any virus that will run as a service at safe mode, I fix safe boot if a virus has deleted those keys, I get my auto-run protection in safe mode, and I may be able to prevent some root kits from activating so it's easier to detect and remove them.

I can set it to auto end all end dialog boxes but I'd like to remove or fix the problem instead.

As much as I love Norton, I have ALWAYS had problems running the Program Scan option in Norton IS. It worked the first time I configured the firewall when I set up the computer 7 months ago. Since than, about 80% of the time it will crash anywhere from 10% of the way through to just about all the way through. My question is, can I run the program in Safe Mode? I think this manual configuration is designed to be used only when you first set up Norton IS to confirgure your firewall, which is the ONLY time it worked on my computer all the way through. (Maybe one other time, but that's it.) But I wanted to see all the Internet Programs on my system and think I have too many running processes in the background which is causing the crash. Can it be run in Safe Mode?

A:Norton IS 2004: Can I run program scan in Safe Mode?

Hi, No, I would say it should not be, as most of the things running would not be working in Safe Mode, for one thing.

That's what Safe Mode is, a diagnostic mode....lots of things do not load when you start in Safe Mode.

If the thing is not checking what is running live, then maybe you could see what programs have had access or been blocked... but if it is reflecting realtime monitoring, most of the things that normally run wouldn't be shown.

You can try, that shouldn't harm anything.

Maybe pick Safe Mode with Networking if you have XP

Hello, please help me with the following issue.

One of the program that I used to operate a laboratory machine, AB 7300 (real time PCR) failed to load in normal mode but could be loaded in safe mode. The problem started to occur after I send the machine for repair. Apparently the problem was related to a loose computer cable but the technician also cleaned my registry file.

All the other programs could load normally. The OS is Windows XP SP 2 with the latest updates installed. The computer has an intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40 GHz 3.39 GHz, 2GB RAM. I also have Bitdefender standard 9 antivirus, Zone Alarm Pro firewall ver 7.0.337 and AVG 7.5 anti-spyware. The machine is regularly scanned for virus anti spyware. the 7300 program was able to run previously even with these firewall/antivirus/antispyware running.

Using selective startup mode (by opening the msconfig.sys), the 7300 program could load even when all the SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, System services and startup Items are enabled. However, the program failed to load when the computer was started using the original BOOT.INI.

Thank you

My wife clicked on something on a Kardashain (sp?) website a few days ago, and got our Windows XP computer a very nasty infection. If I boot in regular mode, our background is replaced with a big message in red that says "your system is infected", and we get the constant pop-ups, etc. There are small red circles with white "x" in the middle on teh bottom right, and the popup says "click here to protect your computer from spyware"- it then runs "advanced virus remover' and "protection system" (icons look liek windows security center and it pops up fake windows security center messages) and "protection system suppport" (icon looks like a life preserver).

I tried in safe mode, and the virus has disabled Avast, spybot, and windows defender. i tried to install hijackthis, and it seems to have removed access to the program. When I try to run windows defender, or spyhunter, i get "windows cannot access the specified device, path , or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item".

In safe mode, I did get spyhunter to work for a minute, and it said that it had detected a rootkit, so i rebooted using the spyhunter mini OS, and after that was at least able to run spybot and spyhunter, but they both just closed in the middle of scans, I assume due to the virus that we have.

Last few days I've been having a serious problem with my Windows 7 computer. Every time I turn my computer on, my computer invariably freezes within ten minutes. If I open a program (any program - so I can't run virus scans, chkdsk, or system restore), the freeze occurs almost immediately. Everything stops - I can't even move the mouse, and I need to do a hard boot.
I downloaded and installed three programs only hours before the program appeared - Blender, Reaper, and LoL. However, those are all fairly legitimate programs, and I had them a year or two ago without issue. I deleted Reaper and Blender as soon as the freezes started. What's more, the freeze occurs even if I don't log into any account and just leave my computer on the startup screen.
The worst part is that the freezes occur even if I use safe mode. Maybe it's a hardware issue? My computer runs burning hot...
Any ideas? I'm decent enough with computers but I can't even run any of the programs that I think might help.
Thanks everyone! Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,
this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?
if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r
not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.
one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.

That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

OS= Win 7

A:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

A:HP Pavilion will not boot in safe, safe w/networking, safe command or in normal mode

I'm heading to work now ill be back later tonight so just post suggestions and i will try them. =)

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).
Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Safe Mode with Networking loads normally.

Any ideas or advice?

The computer is an Acer 4743G running Windows 7 Home Basic x64.

Hello Zarmaki, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since it will startup in "Safe Mode with Networking", you might see if using the tutorial below to troubleshoot may help to find a cause.

A:No virus scan in safe mode or safe mode with netwrkg

Hi and Welcome to BleepingComputer,

Not all anitvirus programs work in safe mode, I don't know about Symantec but I do know my ZoneAlarm does not. I do not see the reason to run it in safe mode. If you are really wanting to run stuff in safe mode, run SuperAntiSpyware in it and just run your antivirus program in regular windows.

Btw, it sounds like you had something on there that has backdoor capabilities and if that is the case, then unless you reformat the computer, it will never be truly safe again.

Hi guys,

My problem is somewhat complex so please bear with me. I had malware and adware on my laptop which was really annoying and I tried really hard to get rid of it. So I decided I was going to do a system restore. The system restore kept saying "System restore is initializing". I tried it three times and it didn't work. I looked around on the internet, and someone suggested to do the system restore while in safe mode. This is where I made my mistake. I set safe mode in msconfig.exe (not knowing you could go into safe mode while booting). msconfig forces the computer to boot into safe mode everytime, but my safe mode won't boot. I get a b;ack screen with a cursor. I have noticed that the cursor gets reset to the middle of the screen every five seconds or so. I also see the words safe mode flash in all four corners sometimes. I have tried re-installing windows 8.1 from a bootable usb, but whenever I change the boot priority, it doesn't seem to save my settings. Please tell me what my options are. Will replacing my hard drive do the trick. Thank you in advance.

A:I set safe mode in msconfig.exe and safe mode won't boot.

Can you restart and get into your log in screen ? If you can, enter safe mode by pressing the power button icon (lower right corner) then Shift + restart. That gets you to Advanced Settings where Safe Mode and, if that fails, Reset PC to orig settings. If you can't, try a hard reset by removing battery and all external usb attachments and then pressing and holding power button until it shuts down. Repeat a few more times to drain memory, then see if powering up will get you to log on screen.

A system restore in safe mode will just restore the malware. You need to boot into safe mode and run your anti-virus or malware program and have them quarantine and then remove them while in safe mode. Use Malwarebytes free or Adwcleaner or Hitman to clean the system. If that does the trick, manually create a system restore point that you know is clean after the system is to your satisfaction.

I was browsing the internet the other day when I clicked on a link and my computer shut down. I immediately knew it was a bad link. My computer rebooted and it wouldn't let me on IE after that at all. I then did a restore to the previous day. I was about to get online so I went and downloaded Kaspersky IS and scanned my computer. My laptop messed up and rebooted itself. Then got Anti-Malware Bytes in Safe mode and ran a scan, still had issues Kaspersky not running right and my computer freezing after just a couple of minutes. Went back and did a restore again to the same spot and this time said forget Kaspersky and jsut did AMWB. It showed my computer is clean, yet about 2 minutes after booting, my computer reboots and the safe mode option pops up. I can run ok in safe mode but cannot get it to work in normal mode. I did trend micros housecall and another online scanner and all say my computer is clean. Yet, when I start IE, I am redirected on every link I click to scour..... or another site with links on it. Any help is greatly appreciated, as well as a recommendation for a better Anti-virus. I jsut had McAfree that came with this laptop. Thanks!

Hello, I'm hoping someone would be able to help me resolve this so that I can avoid having to reinstall Windows. Here's the situation: my laptop suddenly cannot boot up anymore; it usually hangs when the "Please wait..." dialog shows up with the text "Windows is starting up...", but sometimes it goes as far as the login prompt, then hangs after I enter my credentials and press Enter. When it hangs I cannot even move my mouse cursor. I can only think of two things I did out of the ordinary that created this mess:
I installed the driver for the Turtle Beach AudioAdvantage Micro USB stick audio card before my PC started hanging. However, after I installed the driver I was forced to reboot, and my computer rebooted just fine.
I closed my laptop's lid to put it in sleep mode while MyDefrag (formerly JkDefrag) was running. I have done this in the past without any issues, but this time when I exited sleep mode my computer was hanging, so I forced a reboot. This trouble started after I rebooted.

I am able to boot up in Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking, which leads me to think that maybe some network related drivers got corrupted. Some more info on my setup:
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 installed (v5.1.2600)
I have Avira AntiVir and Comodo Firewall installed
I am not using Hibernation
Audio: SigmaTel STAC9751
Graphics: Intel 945 GMS
