Windows takes over my Function keys - Games cant use them

Q: Windows takes over my Function keys - Games cant use them

I need a solution. Barring that I need a baseball bat.

I want to disable my function key abilities completely so games or other apps can use them normally. Windows seem to take over these functions with the stuff like brightness, sound, turn airplane mode on/off.. what i need is a registry hack or something to to fix this. There is a app in control panel that allows you to access some, not all of these functions.. Windows Mobility Center - but still you cannot turn them off at all. I do not need or want any of these features on my function keys.

How to do this?

These are shortcut keys manufactures started putting on keyboards a few years back.. They used to be called Multimedia keyboards - these functions were never standard for a keyboard. I feel like MS has some nerve taking over my function keys like this in a way where i cannot easily turn these off.

Aside from that, i think this forum should have a Registry hacks section. I used to use another forum - forgot it's name for use with XP. If anyone knows of the name of a windows 8 forum with lists of registry hacks please let me know.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows takes over my Function keys - Games cant use them

Windows does not take over function keys. Every app can redefine function keys as they see fit, and Windows does not override them (with a few exceptions, of course, like ctrl-alt-del).

In general, the app gets first crack at any keypress. So, if this is happening, that means there's another reason for it. Do you have any third party hokey apps? Or anything that might watch keyboard input?

Starting a new post on an old topic as most answers are years old and reference solutions that don't work anymore (e.g. editing , or using lenov settings software) Question:How do i lock the function keys?  I.e. if the key with F1 has the mute symbol on it, how do i get it  where i just need to push F1 to mute the laptop.  to put it the way another poster did, "how to swap FN function keys to just press F1 without Fn+F1?" All the litterature says "My Device Settings" but all i see there are- Battery- Power- Energy Star- Other (all this has is the Lenov Vantage toolbar)

hey guys i just got a mac aluminum keyboard from goodwill for 20 bucks (i know win) but the keyboard works fine but i was wondering is there a way to make the function keys work like they do on a mac in windows 7? like there is function volume up/down and brightness up/down and like the dashboard button. could i make the volume/brightness buttons work and map the other function keys to other stuff in windows? like map the dashboard key to minecraft or something?

A:mac keyboard function keys on windows?

Key mapping is typically a function of the keyboard drivers/software. The name brand models (ie: Logitech, Microsoft, etc.) have this built into their software/drivers. There isn't a Windows feature or standalone/freeware option that I'm aware of.

Hi Eknath
There is a solution available in BIOS. Turn on the system, on dell logo press or tap on F2 key to go to BIOS settings page. Click on “Advanced” > Function Key Behavior.  When you click on [Function Key] there is an option to select Multimedia key and function key. Change it from whatever option is enabled. Then click F10 to save the settings and exit.

Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I tried following the keyboard troubleshooting guide where it says to look for a HOT KEYS driver on hp.com, the problem is that this driver is not avaible for my device. Also, I tried googling it and download this hot keys driver for windows 10 and when I try to install it, it just says it's not compatible with my device. 2. toshiba specific function keys doesnt work

Maybe someone have solved this problem, expecially with bluetooth driver. At toshiba page there ara of cource no drivers for Windows 10.

I hope someone can help with this new problem I've encountered on my Toshiba Z835 laptop that's running on Windows 7.
Two days after installation of some Windows 7 updates, I discovered that none of the function keys on my keyboard were working (neither the FN key, nor any of the F1-F12 keys); and also the wifi function had been disabled and couldn?t be enabled/turned on. I've compiled a list of the recent update installations in case I may need to uninstall one or more items to solve the problem, but I?m hoping that some of the Windows 7 users here may have encountered the same issues and could share how they were resolved.

I should mention that I came across a thread on this forum concerning a similar situation after upgrading to Windows 10, in which several posts (including one from a Windows 7 user) reported success in turning on the disabled wifi function by running TSBWireless.exe (found here: C:\program files\TOSHIBA\Flashcards\ButtonSupport\); unhappily, however, that didn?t work in my case.

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

Hi.

I have win 7 ultimate on Acer Aspire 5310 with 1Gb RAM and IObit Malware Fighter and AdvancedSystemCarePro with RAM cleaner, I use regularly. Firefox (latest) is the browser of choice but I have also IE.

When I click to start YM it immediately uses all the capability of the computer for an hour or so...The flashing light (diamond icon) is fully on. It takes 15 minutes before I see the login panel then another 1/2 hour to see the contacts list pane and I'm logged in. If someone tries to chat me, the new window opens but I cannot insert text for at least 10 minutes...they think I am ignoring them and usually leave. If I have Firefox running during this first hour it will only do the simplest page refreshes...anything more onerous and it goes to "not responding"

I have run scans, removed and reinstalled YM, cleaned every log file, cache...

If I manage a conversation it wil freeze if 2 cams are opened and the only solution is a shutdown of YM using the Task Mgr...about 5 times.

Once it is fully loaded the icon light goes off.

I have tried also the compatibility regimen and sending to yahoo. The computer is fine without YM running.

Arrrggghh...>:(

A:YahooMessenger takes an hour to function

Process Monitor that's a part of the free SysInternals Tools on Microsoft's website will log everything going on with your CPU. I'd recommend launching that program, running YM, then stopping ProcMon as soon as you can. It will log thousands of entries in seconds.

Google and YouTube HOW TO PROCMON. It will take some time to find out what's causing it, but that is the only way to for sure find out what's causing the problem.

Why have the function keys been disabled in Windows 7? I know from other threads and tutorials thatthere are ways of getting atthe functions (though not if your laptop is on the old side - my Toshiba Portege can't access the option to show both a display on its screen and a video projector for example). But even a simple things like rename and help, which many programs access via F2 and F1, now don't work.

Seems silly to disable these useful functions.

They aren't "disabled", you need to install the drivers for your laptop that tell windows what the function keys do.

Not sure how to explain this abstractly, so I will give an example. If I press the F12 key by itself, it turns off the wireless connection. If I want to actually input "F12," I have to enter fn-F12. What's the procedure for reversing this? I.e., I want to have to enter fn-F12 to turn off the wireless, etc. Isn't there a way to do this in the control panel of Windows 8?

A:Function keys and F1, F2, F3, etc.

It probably depends on the make of computer (presumably a laptop?).

There may be a utility provided by the laptop manufacturer, or you may need to get into the machine's BIOS or UEFI settings to change it.
