Start Button and Action Center not working

Q: Start Button and Action Center not working

I have noticed that the start button (bottom left) has stopped showing anything when I hover over it, same as the action center. I cant even get the action center to open up. Also when I right click on the start button (bottom left) I only get a limited number of options. WHat can I do to fix this? I tried contacting HP Tech Support and they were no help what so ever! Total waste of my time! Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Start Button and Action Center not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

By not identifying your HP notebook you are not helping either one of us. Post the product number or the complete product name in your next response. Are you using some internet protection software? Did this happen after some event, such as clicking on a mail from someone you don't know or a website button? I suggest using System Restore and selecting a system checkpoint dated before the issues began. Are you familiar with the system restore utility that is part of Windows? If you are not, then perhaps you should consider using the USB recovery media that you should have created by now. You can use it to return you PC to the state it was in when it was delivered to you. Another option is to use Reset.

Let's say I used the following command to uninstall OneNote from Windows 10 Pro machine

Code:
Get-AppxPackage *onenote* | Remove-AppxPackage
It did what it was supposed to do and successfully uninstalled OneNote. However, I notice that the "Note" button still persists in the Action Center notifier popup. Once OneNote is uninstalled, clicking on "Note" makes Windows to offer installing an application from Store.

Is there any civil way to remove that "Note" button from Action Center? I know that I can hide it by collapsing the button stack, but what about the complete removal?

A:Removing button from the Action Center area

This is an old thread, but I have the same issue. Anyone know how to kill-off the "Note" button still in the Action Center?

After an aborted effort to upgrade AVG, I have lost the windows 10 start menu, action center, MS Edge and other programs and access. I have run the scans (sfc /scannow), ran the suggested commands in powershell (Get-AppxPackage | % { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppxManifest.xml" -verbose }) to restore start menu. Ran program ReimageRepair, just wasted money and re-installed windows 10 free upgrade. No fix, still unable to open start menu (except right click text version), action center. Any suggestions?

I have a Surface Pro 4, fully updated.

I've noticed that periodically, whatever program that powers the Action Center, the Start Menu, and some of the icons in tht Notification Area locks up and I don't know how to restart it.

I won't be doing anything of note at at the time and all of a sudden, all of the above stops. Restarting explorer doesn't do it. Forcing into and out of tablet mode doesn't do it either.

Any ideas on how to jump start this without having to restart?

Thanks in anticipation.

I am not quite sure how you turned off action center without some serious hacking, but try going to Control Panel>Action Center and dig around. See if you can find anything. Good luck!
Please post back if you find anything, so that we can learn from it.

I have a Toshiba laptop. Windows 7 operating system. It has a windows "Action Center". I do use the Defender and McAfee.

I was infected a couple of days ago by the Win 7 Security virus. I installed (from a clean computer) and ran the Malwarebytes and Superantispyware over and over again until it was clean.

I noticed my "action Center" seems to not be working. Can't even run the Defender, I get an error message of 0x80070424. I used to get the Windows updates automatically, and that appears to have stopped (although I can manually click "windows update" and get them that way. Oh, and the little white flag that would be in the lower right hand corner is missing (telling me of any problems or messages).

I checked my bitlocker in the services.msc and found it is checked to manual. Is that correct?
What can I do to get this back working? Or am I still infected?

Thanks for any input.

A:Windows 7 Action Center not working?

1) I don't know what "I installed from a clean computer" means, but you need to format the drive and then install the OS

2) Defender and McAfee - not sure which is worse. Yes I am, McAfee - but they are both worthless. Replace McAfee with ANY other anti virus app. Really. And disable the Windows Defender Service - Defender is nothing more than a waste of resources.

I had successfully upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1545 from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
And it was working fine until yesterday eve when i found a blank screen in the startup taking so long.
Somehow the windows started and the desktop appeared but i found that when i tried refreshing the desktop,it kinda stuck up and none of the buttons were responding including-the windows button, task bar, action center, search bar.
All i had to do was to long press the power button and shut it down.
I tried troubleshooting the startup but it said "windows could not repair the startup."
I tried restoring it but it said "no restore points have been created".
I havent changed any hardware or added any new software/app.
I dont know how to come out of this and put my pc back to normal.
I am running a 32 bit system with c2d processor and 3 gb RAM.
Any help will be appreciated.

Action Center on my Win 10 64-bit PC sometimes works correctly and posts messages when an event occurs, e.g. an email being delivered or a USB stick being removed from a port. At other times though, the messages may not be displayed until 10 - 60 minutes after the event.

Also, should displayed messages be retained in Action Center at all? Is there a log?

Can anyone advise?

Thanks.

Last week I found my way here from answers.microsoft.com...cant-turn-on-action-center after unsatisfactory dealings with Dell and McAfee. At least I didn't have to pay McAfee NOT to solve my problem. Many hours and days later, first a thank you to all on this site who posted on the topic in mid-December and whose counsel was invaluable to me watching from the sidelines. That's now a closed forum and I need a little more help.

So far I've followed all of the good advice, ten steps worth, and removed Win32/Sirefef!cfg and Win 32/Sirefef.P along with a Rogue rootkit virus and minor mal/adware. My computer is running faster and better than it has in a long time. The only lingering problem is that I cannot recover Action Center which has been replaced by an also inop WSCS, neither of which can be turned back on again by any of many methods I've tried including turning System Restore off then on again and other fixes, none of which have solved this problem.

I have a line of code copied to my desktop to install in the Registry but I'm uncomfortable doing it (as it's well beyond my experience). Hello Chigozie,

Do you have any 3rd party Start Menu type program installed?

If so, they often have settings that can disable the Start button on the taskbar.

If not, then run a sfc /scannow command for now to see if it may help if it's a corrupter or modified system file at fault.

I have recently 'upgraded' to Windows 10 to my detrement.Everything was working fine until I rebooted one morning possibly a day or two after installation. The start button (bottom left) does not work. Everything else (I assume) works fine, Cortana is working and all other task bar buttons are working. If I right click on my task bar and check properties, the start menu has dissappeared from the tabs at the top. The only reason I know it was there is from checking online.I can still right click and shut down that way. But I have no pop up start menu.I have tried all the hints/tricks online but nothing seems to help. I would restore back to Windows 8.1 but I really want to get this fixed. Any help would be greatly received.p.s. I am not overly tech savy.

When I try clicking the start button, it doesn't work. I move my mouse to the right side of the screen, and the bar doesn't come up. Same with moving my mouse to the top left corner of the screen. I checked the properties by right clicking the task bar. The corner navigation options are checked off to show them when I move my mouse to the different corners. When I googled for answers, they were saying to make sure to uninstall third-party applications. I don't have downloaded so I don't know how it would stop working.

Hi Ali, welcome to Windows EightForums!

First of all, try the keyboard shortcuts:

Start - Windows Key
Charms Bar - Windows Key + C.

Could also be something as simple as a quick reboot.

Another PC with non working start / notification button.

It seems it happens out of the blue. I tried several suggested fixes without success. So will just wait till the next update.

Hopefully that will solve the issue. As long as I get updates I will just shut down with task manager.

It's pretty much all there in the title!
Within the last week or so, the windows start button has stopped working. I can right click on it to access some things, but not all.
I've been online and tried several things including pretty much everything on this page: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/start-menu-does-not-open-windows-10
including the things in the messages at the bottom but nothing works for me.

I'd rather not have to create a new user profile, but I would if I knew it was going to work.

Can you please help?

thanks
Nellie.

Start Button (is it still called that?) & Windows Key Not Working.

I've seen other posts about this (example), but there doesn't seem to be any reason given for the problem. I've got this issue on a clean Windows 10 install.

A:Start Button & Windows Key Not Working?

I checked Microsoft's drivers for your keyboard and there aren't any for Windows 10 or even 8 which may be the reason why your having this problem.

Sooner or later the manufacturer of <random> device stops producing updated drivers.
