T400 ThinkPad Windows 10 screen switches off

Q: T400 ThinkPad Windows 10 screen switches off

I have a T400 ThinkPad upgraded to Windows 10 that suddenly had a blank screen and no lights except for wifi.On closer inspection I discovered the backlight is not lit during startup, whilst ThinkPad splash and window symbol are displayed but then, screen goes blank and then I hear the windows startup sound.Displays perfectly on an external monitor. I have replaced inverter, lcd cable and screen .... nothing works! I'm not sure if I should just resell the parts I bought and get another laptop .... can I transfer Windows 10 to another machine or is there another fix I could try? I don't have much money.Any help appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

I put my Thinkpad T400 in hibernate, but next morning I could not boot. When I press the power button, the lights below the screen turning on and I hear the sound of the hard disk, and the turns off. I do not even see anything on the screen; it is just black. The process keeps on repeating in a loop, unless I press the power button to turn off. I have tried the static charge removing trick. I have also removed the hard disk put it back again, but did not work either.  Please help.

When opened fully (at right angle) the screen is blank. I can initially see a very dim Thinkpad logo on boot but nothing else, no BIOS, grub or luks screens. Also during this time the bluetooth LED on the inverter is on. The thinklight still works as does external display: If I move the screen down towards the keyboard the display comes on and I can see the screen as normal and other inverter lights come on such as the battery light.WHILE DISPLAY IS DOWN IN KEYBOARD   PLEASE ANY ONE SUGGENST ME WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Appreciate any help I can get,

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Alright, this problem has been plaguing me for quite some time. I have a pc which continues to switch off every time i try to enter windows xp. It cant make it passed the initial loading screen, the bar moves across about twice and then switches off the pc. No restart, just plain off. I've reset the ram, changed positions, swapped them around left one out while the other in. Reinstalled windows. Tried a new power supply. Bought a new harddrive. Reset the bios. Disconnected all other peripheral hardware and cdroms. The pc can start up and get into safe mode and can remain in safe mode for what seems indefinitely. I used to be able to enter safe mode and then restart and enter windows like that, but that has ceased working. I have no idea of what else may be the issue. Short of buying a new motherboard? Perhaps the power button is failing? But that doesnt make sense since the pc remains on when the harddrives are disconnected. I've tried switching sata ports and even power cables. Nothing is working.

The specs:
abit nf-m25v
amd 42OO
2gb (1gig sticks) apogee ddr2 8OO
1tb sata samsung hdd
25Ogb sata seagate hdd
35Owatt powersupply

A:Pc switches off while at windows xp start up screen

you said it can remain in safe mode - could it before you replaced the hard drive? and are you saying that you can no longer enter safe mode now? Anyway have you thought of testing the memory, download memtest as a .iso and burn to a cd. re power supply you will need more expert help than myself to see if a 350 watt is the correct power for your pc.

Hi all, I've been searching the forums about this topic, but I haven't found anything specific for my case: Symptoms: After turning on the laptop, the screen works fine for a few seconds and then it goes dark. The LCD display is working correclty, but with no backlight (still can see the screen if I use an external light source like a flashlight. All indicator lights (wifi, power, battery) work correctly.Image is displayed correctly if connected to external monitor.Problem happens in windows and BIOS (rules out driver issue).Realized that if I turn down the brightness all the way down and then press fn + F7 or if I close and open the lid, the screen would light up back again. If I turn the birghtness up, the screen goes dark again, but if I repeat step 4 it still works. After a few minutes of operating at minimun brightness, I can turn it all the way up and it won't go dark.Yesterday the backlight finally went out for good and not working at all.I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue with the inverter, mobo fuse or cable. Maybe someone here has seen these specific symptoms before and could lend me some knowledge and save me some time in debugging this issue. Thanks

Assuming you have a CCFL screen (with an inverter), the inverter is most likely.  Some T400 have CCFL, some have LED.  With LED panel, it is probably bad panel.

A:lenovo t400 led board help for my led screen

T400 was a transitional model.  The previous model, t61, had CCFL backlights.  The next model, t410, was all LED backlights and the video cable also had the power for the backlight.  The LED board just had the status LEDs.  T400 had some CCFL backlight screens with a normal inverter.  As inverter converts the DC on the motherboard to the AC used by a CCFL bulb.  Some T400 machines had screens like your picture which has an LED backlight, no inverter and an LED control board that split off the DC to the LED backlight into the little ribbon cable in your picture.  The LED backlight models use an entirely different video cable.

It sounds like your machine originally had a CCFL backlight.  The net result is that the panel you bought won't work for you.  Return it if you can.

My screen turns black or gray and the system freezes. The only way to fix it is to restart the system by opening all forms of power supply (adaptor and the battery).Sometimes it works fine for a day or two, sometimes only for a few hours.I think the problem has something do with my graphics drivers or some other driver from Lenovo.I have used Lenovo Thinkvantage Toolbox to check for hardware errors and it shows that everything is working fine.I have updated all drivers but still the problem is there.I still have warrenty period left.I bought my system 2 years ago and have never had any problem untill this one.My system specifications are given below.Model: Lenovo Thinkpad T400 2764 CTOBIOS version (Latest?): 3.18 (latest)OS loaded (ex. Hi,Maybe somebody can help me with this. Today when I turned on my T400 the LDC screen went black after starting windows. I can see the booting messages but when starts loading windows 7 (displays the windows logo) the LDC screen in the laptop goes black. If I connect a external monitor directly to the laptop, LDC starts displaying.Even if the monitor the monitor does not have any display the LDC is working. If I change the settings to display in boths. Both screens work. I made all possible combinations and everytime if I disconnecte the external monitor the screen goes black.I used a dock station and it does not work. LDC and monitor (connected to dock station) were black. If I connect the monitor directly to the laptop the dock station and the LDC worked fine. So display in dock station and LDC only work is an external monitor is directly connected to the laptop. Any idea why this is happening or have a similar problem?Thank you,Rob

Hi,
Today when I switched on my computer it began to start up (barely staying on for five seconds) before switching off and repeating the whole process. It does stay on long enough for me to push either esc or f10 and go into computer set up. However i am not too sure what to configure and how and as soon as i exit out of it, my laptop starts the whole on/off process again.

I am not too sure about the specs of my laptop, only that it is an Hp and has windows xp.
Please, what can i do? I would be forever grateful if someone knows how I can fix this..

A:Laptop switches on, begins to start up, switches off then repeats process

If you can post the model of the HP laptop, we can learn more for you.
You should find the model information on a sticker on the bottom of the machine.

It sounds like ESC or f10 will take you to the BIOS configuration utility.
Have you tried f8? You may need to press repeatedly, or press and hold.
This will take you to the option to boot to Safe Mode.
If this is successful, let us know. If not, let us know.

Next... you obviously have internet access from another computer.
There are two utilities you should download and run.
These utilities will check for errors in 1) your memory and 2) your drive.
Since they run outside of windows, trying to run them will give us a good idea if it is a hardware issue, or if it is a problem with your OS. (the f8 question may leave this an open question, but this will help get a definite answer, in addition to trying to isolate hardware faults)

To Test Memory... Using Memtest Please follow this guide...

Please note that (unless you start getting errors reported) you will need to let this run a long time.
A good way of doing this is to let it run over night. In each 'pass" there are a series of eight memory tests that are run, each more complicated than the previous. We used to advise letting it run a minimum of 7 passes, unless you start getting errors. We now advise at least 10 full passes. If you have errors reported, you may want to re-run the test with only one stick of ram installed, checked each stick unt... Read more

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

This may not be a QB-only issue, but seems to be the only program doing this that I've noticed:

In inputting a credit card charge, I start typing the new item description and the active screen stops responding as if I've clicked on a different screen. My input elicits an error "ding". I have to click inside the screen over and over as I try to input the information.

Why does the screen keep becoming inactive no matter how fast I type, and any solutions???

QB Pro 2012

Thanks in advance!!!

hi,

Could anyone explain the difference between domain (controller)switches and full fabric switches? (or direct me to a page/site which would do the job)

Tks

A:domain switches vs full fabric switches

Depends on what context you're talking about. Your statement is a bit "Apples and Gorillas" The two really aren't related to each other.

T430 fails to read hard drive or hangs up on startup when the battery is installed.  Typically will start on AC without the battery installed, but still hangs up intermittently  Was working fine until after multiple rapid power outages during a storm. Any ideas? OS is Windows 10 Thanks in advance!

A:ThinkPad hangs on boot - stuck at Thinkpad screen

You might have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.  If that is the case, the only solution is to replace the board.  There is an array of power transistors that handles the switching back and forth between AC and battery.

Hi guys,

I'm totally new to this forum, but I have encountered a problem that I really hope you can help me with.

have an MSI laptop that runs Windows 7 32 bit version. Recently it has a tendency to reboot when I come back to use it after the screen has switched off. When I get back, there is the blue screen and then it asks whether I want to reboot as normal. Upon restart it says that Windows closed down unexpectadly etc.

I have tried to look at the crash dump files, but I must admit I am not that much closer to understand what the problem is. It happens a few times a day. Could it be related to the HDMI cable that I have recently purchased and occasionally plug in/out during the day in order to watch movies over the TV? However, it crashes also when the cable is not in.

I would be really grateful if you guys could help me understand the crash dump file and the cause of these crashes and what to do about it (is it software or hardware related?). I have looked for driver updates (everything seems to be updated) and also ran anti-malware and anti-virus programmes (found one trojan that is now gone).

Here is an example of the crash dump file:

Wasn't sure where to post this, because I have no idea what's causing the issue. I have windows XP w/ sp3.

Lately whenever I am watching a movie on my computer, whether it is in IE on Netflix or Megavideo, or in Mozilla Firefox, or on my Windows Media Player, the fullscreen automatically switches to standard screen every once in awhile.

It didn't used to do this and I can't figure out what I've done to make it do it now. I don't have any screensaver set on my computer. Seems like something keeps interrupting fullscreen mode no matter what program I'm using to watch the movies. I've run scans for spyware (using Malwarebytes) and viruses(AVGfree) and haven't come up with anything.

Any ideas on this issue or is there a more appropriate place to post this question?

Thanks :)

A:Fullscreen automatically switches to standard screen

sounds like something on the computer, maybe a task that the computer is running, is causing the movie to switch out of full screen mode. try either closing other programs or locking the aspect ratio

Hello, sometimes, when my computer is puggled to the charge and the charging cables starts to come out or if I move it, my computer screen goes completely black. It is not due to brightness, as I have already checked. It switches from whathever I am doing in my computer, either it being writing a word document or whatching a movie, to completly black screen, back to what I was doing, back to black.... and that happens a about five times in a row.I wanted to know if there is anything that I can do or whether it is a malfunction of the computer... I am worried it will stop working at any time. Thank you,
