unable to access dvd drives

Q: unable to access dvd drives

I have had this system for over a year and no problems. A few days ago I could not access my dvd drives in xp. They are still assigned letters in my computer and the device manager tells me that both devices are working properly. I have tried every type of disk that I have. They will not autoplay nor will they open. I have not installed any new software lately. Everything else on my system works. I have a dual boot system, xp pro and vista ultimate 64 with each os being on a seperate hd. When I go into vista my dvd's work fine. I have downloaded the latest firmware for both optic drives. I can't play music from a cd or install any programs. My computer shows me that they are there but i just can't get in them.
Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This all started when I was unable to reach my NAS drive (DNS-323) from my laptop. ("The network location cannot be found.")
Trying from other computers was successful...so I know the problem is related to just my laptop.

I started up a MalwareBytes scan and when it reached my ATAPI.SYS file...my AVAST AV popped up with a virus alert. AVAST reported that I have a "Win32:Alureon-FR" located in "C":\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\atapi.sys".

I told AVAST to skip the file (for now) and I terminated the MalwareBytes scan.

What is the best sequence to get this file cleaned up?

...but my CD-ROM drive works fine and my DVD drive can access CD-ROMs.
Here's my system:
-HP Pavillion 8755C 800MHz, 128MB RAM, running Windows ME
-Std floppy disk controller
-LG CD-RW CED-80838
-Samsung DVD-ROM SD-612

The problem started happening after my power supply blew and I had it replaced. The message I get is "Please insert a disk into drive a:" (e: for the DVD). I've checked all the suggested things on the HP support site:
- device manager looks good
- uninstalled all 3 devices in device manager, all 3 reinstalled with the same config after restart.
- Secondary Master, Secondary Slave, Primary Slave look ok
- cables look good - the stuff above wouldn't show up otherwise would it?

The only thing that looks different to me is that the drive letters have changed from m: & n: to d: & e: for the CD-RW & DVD drives. Any thoughts appreciated!

A:Unable to access floppy and DVD-ROM drives

Welcome to TSG!

If your DVD will read CD's but not recognize DVD disks, then the optics are hosed for the DVD playback. A DVD Drive typically has 2 sets of optics or optics that rotate. If the DVD read optics are bad, that is what you'll get.

As for the floppy...odds are that it's gone too!

If the Power Supply went out, it may have spiked and damaged the drives. Just hope that the motherboard isn't bad.

If the system is still under warranty, have HP replace both drives due to the power supply spike. If replacements are done and still having issues, then it would be the Motherboard that got taken out!

Good Luck!

Hi I recently upgraded my PC to windows 10 and every since have been unable to access any USB external drive.

The laptop picks up the drives and acknowledges that they are there and working but they do not appear in file explorer.

I have looked in disk management and the drives are there and healthy.

The USB ports work 100% as i have plugged in keyboards etc to test and all the drives i've tried work with other computers.

I've tried everything I could find on forums that have worked for other people. I've reinstalled windows twice. Ran various disk cleanup utilities, checked for hidden drives etc.

I need to upload video files to my laptop to edit for work, so need to resolve this ASAP :/

Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

A:Solved: Unable to access XP network drives from XP PC

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Hey there,

I've had this persistent problem since the beginning of January. Every time I try to open files/folders in, say, my documents, in shared folders, etc. my computer freezes and doesn't bounce back. I've let it sit for almost two hours to see if it'd work itself out, but it never does. This correlates with my Firefox browser freezing during random intervals and causing my entire system to lock up. I recall installing Adobe Photoshop CS3 around the same time this started happening, but I'm not sure if it's something that could cause this kind of reaction. I also have the addon "ljlogin" installed on Firefox, but thus far, I haven't found any discussions to imply that ljlogin could be detrimental to my system. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox with all of the necessary updates. That made a difference for about two weeks, but now it's acting up again. It's also really hard to uninstall/reinstall things because the system locks up.

It's really tough not being able to access my files, but I can browse on Google Chrome without any issue (Unless I try to upload files from my PC). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have updated the Intel Lan cards.
Run Ipconfig /renew. Wouldn't renew.

Changed the registry setting - HKey-Local Machine\system\... to allow access.
PROBLEM solved - Windows 7 update caused a conflict. Rolled back to a previous restore point - Bingo it worked.

I have 2 ADATA 500 GB external hard drives. I plugged them into the USB port and the computer recognized them by name and installed the driver files. It assigned both of them a drive letter but then gave me a message saying that they needed to be formatted. I clicked ok since they are brand new drives and do not have any data on them, but the format failed to complete on both drives. I took both drives to another PC running Windows Vista and they were recognized and accessible. I even transferred a few files to them for testing purposes; however, when I plugged them back into my Alienware laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, then I got the same error. If I go to the disk manager, then I can see the drives by their drive letter and they are listed as healthy with a primary partition but the file format shows as RAW. I tried to use the device manager and uninstall the USB Mass Storage Device drivers for each drive and then I unplugged them and plugged them in again and I would get a device driver installation message that identifies the drives by name and tells me that the device drivers were installed correctly and that my devices are ready for use but then a few minutes later I will get a message telling me to format the drives. Please help. I've run out of things to try. I can still access my iPhone via USB and my USB wireless mouse still works so I know my USB ports are good.

One evening I attempted to install windows 8. After the installation it repeatedly booted back into the windows installation. After removing the install disk, it booted into windows 7 normally. I decided to install a clean copy of windows 7 and that's when the problem appeared. The windows insall will not allow me access to ANY hard drive shown. Says unable to find windows partition or something like that. I've tried reformatting all the drives and same message always comes up. I cannot re-install Windows 7?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Unable to access Hard Drives in Windows 7 installation

It MIGHT be because Windows 8 installed as a GPT Partition...

But, Windows 7 and Vista can only see a GPT Partition as a non-booting data drive, unless using an UEFI BIOS.

Which MIGHT be why your Windows installation 'cannot see' an INSTALLABLE drive.

I would suggest Booting from a LINUX Bootable CD or USB Stick and reformat the Hard Drive to MBR,
i.e. delete the partition and recreate it as MBR and format to NTFS

Then reinstall Windows 7...

Hope this was helpful

I have purchased, installed all of my pertinent programs and files, and have begun using my lovely new HP laptop. All is well but for one major issue.
The new laptop does not have an SD card slot. I did not think this would be a big deal, but it is turning out to be a major pain.

Background Details:
New HP EliteBook
OS - Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64
Full Administrator
I have been completely and miserably unable to access various thumb drives and micro SD cards via two different card readers. Each external drive that has appeared but not allowed me access has been on FAT32-formatted media.
The external drives appear in Windows Explorer as Drive F:\

When I double click the drive icon to view the files therein, I receive the following message:
"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder."

When I click "Continue," I receive the following message: "You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

When I right click the drive's icon, there is NO SECURITY TAB.

I have also attempted these same steps and received these same results after setting my UAC settings tab all the way down to "Never Notify me when"

I have also attempted to gain access to the drive and give myself the permissions that I should already have as Administrator via a Command Prompt.

Hello MdmRptr. Welcome to the forum.

ACL refers to a Access Control List. This is a type of file security protocol.
Access control list - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You may need to remove the ACL in order to access the files normally in Windows.

Looking up ACL brings up a lot of Oracle links. Are you - were you - using an Oracle product with these cards/files?
Using Access Control Lists (ACLs) (System Administration Guide, Volume 2)

If it was an Oracle product you could use the method to remove the ACLs here:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/...ji4/index.html

If you were using a Linux program you could start here to investigate the removal of the ACL in Linux:
setfacl

First I've heard of ACLs. Maybe this info will help to point you in the right direction.

I believe I have a malware virus on my computer. It started where Internet Explorer pages would open by themselves to random sites. Next I've noticed that my CD drives are no longer visible. When I put a CD or DVD into either one of my 2 disc drives, I don't see either on My Computer. I keep getting an error that my drives are not up-to-date but I'm not able to update them. I get the following message when my computer comes on - "The driver CDR4_XP.SYS on your system is old. Please reinstall DirectCD to update the driver".I followed the steps for the Preparation Guide and have attached the Attach.txt and DDS.txt files. I was not able to run the GMER program. I tried multiple times and I keep getting this error and the computer shuts down. The error was "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL." There is more text and then at the bottom it said "Technical Info: ***STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00202074,....)" it continues on with more numbers.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Been googling this for the last hour, and I still can't install a game via a virtual drive; keep getting "Windows cannot access specificed device, path, or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access". Using Win8

Checked the Cdrom registry key to see if it was disabled (it's not), and also checked gpedit to see if "prevent access to computer drives" was checked (it's not). Reinstalled daemon tools and deleted all virtual drives, unplugged cd drive cables, restarted, and reinstalled drivers, nothing. I'm at my wits end here.

Fwiw, I get the same msg when double clicking my physical drive with a cd in it. It says it's working when I check device properties, and I can right click either the physical or vd's and hit "open", and I can see that all the files are there, so it's working obviously. Tried 2 separate restore points from a week ago, still nothing. Thanks in advance.

P.S: tried wincdemu instead of daemon, and it didn't work. It created the virtual drive & brought up the loader, but when I click on the drive, it says access is denied. I then tried alcohol 120%, & didn't work either. I opened the iso from within alcohol, and inside the program it says the media is loaded onto the virtual drive, but no autoplay option pops up. Also, for both alcohol and wincdemu, there's no icon on the drive under my computer (with daemon, the virtual drive at least show the icon of the program I'm trying to run).

A:Can't Access CD Drives/Virtual Drives

Try Disk management. t run it, type in disk management in the control panel search and click on Create and format hard drives under Admin. See if your CD and virtual drives show up there and have a drive letter.

Basically:My computer was completely fine, my Monday evening regular virus/spyware searches turned up 0 results. Tuesday morning I went on the internet, got a few IE popups (even though I use Firefox). Decided to do a Malwarebytes scan and got over 750 infected objects infected. Let the scan finish and was told to restart computer, restarted and the problems started. I completely lost my desktop, no icons and no toolbar; a few more restarts and I managed to get them back but nothing else worked. Every program says I don't have the rights to access it or the computer has the resources to start.I can't access the internet and any scans I can run stop in the middle and give me the 'system resources' error.I'm not using that computer at the moment, since I'm completely unable to use it.Firstly I must ask, is is necessary to save the dds.scr and rootrepeal scanners directly to the desktop, or can they be moved there after being downloaded to another location? I can't access the internet on the infected computer so I will be unable to download them if they MUST be saved to the desktop. I have already managed to run a Win32kDiag scan (attached).Thank you for any help.

Hello,

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

Good morning,I have a system that has had numerous issues, mainly virus related. I have cleaned the system, and show no virus activity... but I'm still having issues.Late last week the system was stuck in a loop, it wouldn't boot to Windows at all (no safe mode, no normal mode). I resorted to a Windows repair from the install disk. It worked... to a certain degree. I am now able to get into Windows, but can not open IE and I can not install a display driver.I am unable to access Windows Update, but was able to set automatic updates to install lots of updates including SP3, but I am still unable to make any changes.Initially when I attempted to open IE I would get a window saying that IE had to close instantly. I attempted to reinstall IE, and I attempted to install a newer version of IE. Neither worked. If I chose to install the updates with the install I would get an access denied error, if I chose not to install the updates with the install it would look like it worked, but now when I click on IE I get "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpl.cpl. The operating system cannot run %1"In device manager, I have no drivers installed on my display adapter. If I try to update it, it looks like it's going to install... but then I get "Cannot install the hardware. Access is Denied".Any assistance or insight into this would be appreciated.

A:Unable to access IE, access denied when updating display drivers, no windows update

On any system with a number of issues...it's often better to do a clean install to wipe the slate clean, rather than hope that you have patched all known and unknown issues, IMO.

I have re-installed Windows 7 but the problem persists. Would really appreciate your help.

A:Unable to access arrow keys or any controls in Error Recovery Console or access BIOS

I would suspect that your bios is not loading the keyboard or mouse, except for your only reference to the error recovery console? Do you mean you have the controls elsewhere, but not there?
But, if the loss is general, the quickest way is to reset the bios. You would normally do this by locating the small bios battery on the motherboard. Remove this and, in its vicinity (better if you browse or refer to a manual for the motherboard!) there will be a small three pin tag, with a joiner across two of the pins. Move the joiner to the other two pins for about one minute, This will return the bios to defaults. If you cannot locate this pin, you will have to leave the computer, with the battery out for quite a while - I would guess possibly over 24 hours, to reset the bios.
But, before, You do not say how you have tried to access the bios? (DEL on startup: F2 on startup are two choices)

Hello I am unable to access my task manager on Windows 7 as administrator. Whenever I try to access it a Command window flashes on the screen quickly and that's it. Same thing happens when taskmgr.exe is clicked.

I was able to capture the command window error as the following:

C;\Users\<name>\Documents>REG and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System  /v  DisableTaskMgr  /t  REG_DWORD  /d  /0  /f
ERROR: Access is denied.

Any help with this would be appreciated. I have checked that TaskMgr is enabled in the registry, and have ran AVG and Malwarebytes and they didn't come up with anything.

Thanks again for any help on this one.

A:Unable to access Task Manager - Error: Access is denied

blue gravity,

Please confirm that the command that is attempting to execute is the following:

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
This command is trying to enable task manager but the command prompt that is trying to enable task manager does not have the permissions to do that.

Please try the following:

Click Start
Type cmd
Right click cmd.exe
Select Run as administrator
type "REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f"
Press enter
Close cmd.exe
Log out
Log in
Try to open task manager

If this does not work, or you believe your computer might be infected, please follow the instructions found at Am I Infected, as I am not authorized to assist with the removal of malware.

Thank you,

Hi there,

My Lenovo Thinkpad laptop got infected by several pop-ups and unwanted programs over the course of the weekend. I launched Avast anti virus, which got rid of the pop ups, and I've manually deleted some of the programs (fake cleaners, etc.) I did not personally download during the time of attack.

I am currently running windows 10 (dumb enough to click the trial, duh)

The laptop is extremely slow now. I have problems accessing the internet from all major browsers (citing DNS errors on Microsoft Edge, Chrome and Opera). However I am able to access the internet using Avast's Safebrowse internet browser.

I have copied the FRST logs as per the rules.

Thank you in advance.

Hey everyone,

My girlfriend has had her computer for well over a year now. Recently it's been crashing alot, mostly with the bluescreen, but on occasion just freezing.
Errorcode on bluescreen is: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

Recently it has been impossible to enter windows, so we figured it'd be best to re-install windows. All we have is a windows XP CD, which is fine.

But when I put in the CD, it crashes with the same blue screen, I googled the errorcode and I found out that alot of people has had simmilar issues, and fixed it by going into BIOS and changing SATA mode from AHCI to IDE, but i cant find anything in BIOS that allows me to do so..

Here's a couple of the links I found on google, with suggestions on how to fix it.

Hard disk not detected [Solved]
Installing XP: ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)? - Cyber Tech Help Support Forums

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (in your case, please start with the Hard Drive diagnostics). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Hi,

In the past, I was able to hide disk drives with TweakUI in Windows XP. I recently ran ComboFix to help to clean a rootkit infection I had, and now the drive that I had hidden is always visible. I've tried re-installing TweakUI, editing the registry manually, and using the DiskPart tool from the command prompt. Nothing will hide the drive anymore.

What may have happened? How can I restore the ability to hide a disk drive?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have a home wired LAN with the following configuration:
1) A Win 7x64 PC (static IP)
2) A Win 8.1x64 LAPTOP (static IP)
3) A Synology NAS (static IP)
3) A TP-LINK TL-R600VPN Wired Router connected to a cablemodem (internet access WAN) and to the switch.
4) A Trendnet 8 port switch connected to the 3 clients (PC, Laptop and NAS) and to the router (TP-LINK)

I have created a Windows Homegroup (Home/Private) from either the PC or Laptop going step by step as per these instructions and making sure that in both the PC and Laptop all requirements are met (required services, adapter settings, etc). The Homegroup is created successfully but the following issue arises:

- From the PC I can access shared files in the Laptop (by going to Windows Explorer/Network for example). From the PC I can also access the NAS shared files.
- From the Laptop, even though the Homegroup shows "Joined", I cannot access any shared file in the PC or NAS (it will show Error 53, network path not found). If I try to map a network drive (to directly access a shared folder in either the PC or NAS), it will also display an error saying that the network path cannot be found. However from the laptop I can access the NAS using the browser (Firefox, IE, etc).
So what is preventing the access to shared folders in the LAN from the laptop?

Thanks for any clue.

A:Unable to map drives/home LAN

Try disabling your firewall, your error code is known to be caused by a firewall. If it works firewall disabled, you have to make new rules for firewall when enabling it again.

Hi,

I have a problem that occurs every once in a while. I'm using the professional 64bit version of 7.

I will start my PC and I am unable to see my drives. I can see my 2 HDDs but I cannot see my CD Rom or my memory card reader. Usually I can see everything but once in a while I am unable to see them. Doesn't matter if the CD Rom is empty or not it still does not show up.

If I restart the computer I can see them, but occasionally they are gone. Is this a known bug or is there a fix for it?

Thanks

I have two desktop PCs running Windows 7 Ultimate, a HP laptop running Windows XP SP3 and a Network Storage Device (Dlink DNS 343 with 3 Raid Volumes) networked via a D Link DIR-635 wireless Router. Both PCs and the DNS-343 are hard-wired to the router: the Laptop connects wirelessly. Since installing Windows 7 on the PCs, I am unable to map the network drives on the DNS-343 even though all network components are visible and functioing in Windows Network Map, Pure Networks Map and Norton Internet Securities 2010 Network Map(with Full Trust). This was not previously a problem with one PC running XP SP3 and the other Vista SP1. The DNS-343 does NOT appear as a network device in Windows 7 Windows Explorer: nor does the Laptop, on either PC. The laptop running XP is able to Map network drives as before and access shared folders on both PCs.

To date I have reset the factory defaults on the router and DNS-343;disabled all firewalls and minimised security controls (eg: MAC filtering) as far as I am able. I can ping each device successfully. The problem is I cannot "see" the DNS-343 in Windows 7 Windows Explorer to map the drives. Any ideas would be welcome.

There are a billion threads about this on 7F and I still can't seem to resolve my problem.

The OS was recently installed about 7 days ago or so. I have a Logitech USB unifying receiver installed in the rear of the tower which works just fine for my wireless keyboard and mouse.

However, I am unable to read/write to any USB flash drive. I have downloaded and installed the USB registry editor to ensure my default setting had not changed somehow. This did not allow me to read any USB drive.

I have attached two screenshots. One shows "My Computer" and how the USB device is not listed on the left. On the right, it shows the USB device listed under "Devices and Printers" but does not allow me to do anything other than view its properties. On the bottom right of this screenshot you will see the USB logo where it would typically allow me to eject the drive, but that option is not listed.

The second screenshot is Device Manager and my USB driver list. No problems listed.

Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT: Third screenshot is attached where the USB device shows up in Disk Management as well.

A:Unable to recognize USB flash drives (All)

Windows 7 recognize USB stick everytime a connect it as a new device

Frankly, this USB not recognized when inserted problem seems the inverse of not being able to eject a flash drive (just had this a few weeks back and I rarely use USB drives).

Other options: shut down PC and unplug from wall for 2 minutes.

Uninstall each USB device via Device Manager as the USB port is in some unknown/unknowable/inconsistent state.

Lenovo T410, Windows 7 Pro 64bit, domain member, communicating with multiple Windows Server 2003 - 2008.

A user's Windows XP laptop was corrupted and I rebuilt it with Windows 7 Professional 64bit. The user had an XP loaner while I was rebuilding, and it worked fine.

I built the laptop in our lab area and at my desk, and everything worked fine. When done, I took it back to the user, but started experiencing network problems at his desk. The first clue was that he didn't receive his normal drive mappings. I tried browsing to the shares and couldn't reach them. I tried by server name and by IP address with no luck. I could access the internet and internal websites including servers I couldn't browse to.

I brought the laptop back to my desk, and it worked fine again. My desk is on VLAN1. The user's desk is on VLAN2. I tried the laptop on two other ports on the user's switch, both were VLAN2. It worked fine on 1 and wouldn't work on the other.

I was thinking either a port issue, a switch issue, or a VLAN issue. My network guy checked the ports and they are all setup the same. He doesn't see any problems on the switch. And since it works on a VLAN2 port, it doesn't seem to be a VLAN communication issue.

I've checked all the NIC and firewall settings, and I don't see anything out of place. I swapped cables, tried it with and without his Cisco IP phone, tried it with and without his port replicator, ect.

I plan to try some different NIC drivers if I can ever get ... Read more

A:Unable to Browse Network or map drives

It would help see the ipconfig /all output. Also let us know if your network is setup via DHCP or static addressing.

It could be a cabling issue. I'm not sure what type of switches you're using but it could be a MAC filtering problem. I think you need to be more specific about your network setup since the probably could be anywhere.

On the switch ports that the laptop did not work at does another laptop or PC work?

Have you tried looking for the latest drivers for your network card?

What type of network did you choose when setting up the PC? (Home/Work/Private)

It just start this morning and I found a post by Superdude4agze (Posted 4/28/09) on your site:

When I attempt to run the command prompt (or regedit) from either the Run command or by selecting the exe from Start-All Programs-Accessories my screen will crash/reset/flash as if the computer was just started. The computer does not actually restart, but it looks like you just started the computer and it runs through the startup items in msconfig, etc. All of the tray icons will disappear and restart and CMD will never appear. Task manager will not reload in the tray however. So to simplify it, the computer restarts without actually restarting and all of the programs I have open remain open or restart.

I'm having the same issue with a pc at work - Symantec Endpoint 11 installed (a full scheduled scan was just ran last night - nothing found) and I have the latest virus def - 5/7/09
The System is Win XP SP2 fully patched.

I ran a full scan again about 15mins ago and nothing was found - Save mode with restore point turned off.

Anyone have any suggestions / resolutions ??

Please
Suddenly my computer (windows xp/service pak2) will recognize my cd and floppy drives but after loading and trying to open either drive I get the message -- insert disk-. I have tried the trouble shooting stuff, opened the device manager ( which says everything is fine) but the computer will not recognize when a drive is already loaded. Can someone help please?
Thanks
Mike
