I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all,

I am the newbie and would appreciate some help on the following issue:

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 machine running on xp/3 (home version). This machine is about two years old and I have had very few problems during that period.

As best I can describe it here is the problem:

The desktop program icons have all taken on the same generic appearance, with the exception of "Internet Explorer" and the "Re-Cycle Bin". If I click on any of the icons the program will not open. However, I can browse all of the files associated with that program, locate the exe file, click on it and the program will open.

I have tried a number of potential fixes including the"tweak UI" repair program, all to no avail.

Your help on this problem would be apprecaited at your earliest.

Regards,

mikeandsylvia

I picked up a nasty virus or worm somewhere and seemingly cannot dislodge it. The symptoms are:

1. Two fake antivirus programs (XP Security 2011 and MS Tool Remover) constantly executed and attempted to scan.
2. All desktop icons have disappeared.
3. Start menu and taskbar are both visible, but all shortcuts on taskbar have disappeared.
4. Cannot right click desktop to access shortcut menu.
5. The desktop folder (accessed through explorer) changes attributes to hidden (as did all sub-folders).
6. All items in "Start -> All Programs" have disappeared.

Actions I've taken:
1. Un-hid the desktop folder and created a taskbar shortcut to the desktop so that I can see desktop items by launching the folder shortcut.
2. Download unhide.exe and un-hid Start menu items. However, many (most) of the items are still blank folders
3. Scanned computer several times in SafeMode with updated versions of Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, and STOPzilla--each of them has turned up different malware, which I removed. But the Desktop and Start menu issue persists and when I access the internet to find solutions the fake antivirus programs randomly return. When I rescan the computer using the three programs above, they keep finding other trojans that I have to remove. It's like this thing is laying eggs which mutate each successive generation.

I'm on Windows XP, ver 202, SP 3. Here is my HijackThis log:

The first thing we need to tackle is to get you the newest version of HijackThis. Please go Here and download the newest version 1.99.1 to a CD or floppy and transfer the file over to the infected computer. Then open HijackThis and create a folder for it in your C: Drive (Navigate to C:\Program Files and right click New>Folder. Name the folder HJT or HijackThis and paste HijackThis in there and run it from there. Click "Scan and Save a logfile". Notepad will open, then click Edit>Select all and then copy and paste the results here, without fixing anything.

my daughter recently tried to restore her computer too an earlier time and it froze in the middle,so she then rebooted and as a result she cant see her icons on the desktop and her right click button on her mousepad doest work help please!!!!!! it goes throught the boot process but when complete she cant access or see icons

A:cant see icons on destop?or right click on mouse

Try this.
At statup, tap the F8 key to bring up a screen that lets you do a selective boot. One of the selections is "boot on last good boot configuration" or similar words. Pick that one and see if it gives a good boot.

If it works, take the opertunity to go to system restore and make a system restore point so she will have a good one to use if she needs it. You can name the restore point, pick something that tells that is good.

Hope this works for you.

Hi,
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help with this problem.
I had an infestation of 'smart antivirus 2009'. As well as all the popup warnings of infections my screen went white. By googling I found your instructions on how to remove it using Malwarebytes Anti malware. I ran the program and removed all the objects connected with the offending program. When I rebooted the desktop screen was white. I checked the display settings and it was set to full colour. I ran a scan again, rebooted and the white screen was there.
After several reboots I ran scan with Spyware doctor and it found this TT_Trojan. This has been removed. Is this connected to the display problem.
What can be causing the problem and how can it be rectified?

I am new here, although I did come here quite a few times and many times found the solution :-)

My problem is (I am on 1511) that some icons of removed (by powershell) apps reapeared, and there seem to be no way to get rid of them. Nothing I have found had worked (like going to start menu folder and deleting the shorcuts).

Namely it's MicrosoftWindowsAlarms, MicrosoftZuneMusic, MicrosoftWindowsPhotos, and in Apps the name looks like this: @{Microsoft.WindowsAlarms_10.1607.1991.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwems-resource--Microsoft.WindowsAlarms-Resources-AppName-Text}

Moreover, few days ago some "new" apps have materialized - that was a shock........no update, nothing, out of blue I had about 10 unwanted apps in my all apps...............crazy.

Any thoughts?

P.S. Normally I deffer updates by turning the service off and/or metered connection. Now I have left it on by mistake...........still should not install against my will some unwanted apps..........and as I said, no update.....

A:Icons of uninstalled apps showing in All apps

Those left-over icons may be a result of deleting programs instead of using Control Panel, Programs and Features to uninstall the programs. When a program is installed the install routine puts the program files in either C:\Program Files [32-bit] or C:\Program Files for 64-bit or C:\Program Files (x86) for 32-bit depending upon which version of the OS is in use. It will also create the icons, write support files to C:\Windows or other Folders and create Registry entries so Windows knows how to run the program. The uninstall routine is supposed to get rid of everything associated, don't know if PowerShell can do it as cleanly.

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.
Cheers

A trojan that's currently doing the rounds in Japan is using Windows itself to try to defeat security software on infected machines.
Trend Micro reports that the BKDR_VAWTRAK malware, which steals credentials used for online banking at some Japanese banks, is using a Windows feature called Software Restriction Policies (SRP) to prevent infected systems from running a wide range of security programs, including anti-virus software from Microsoft, Symantec, and Intel. A total of 53 different programs are blocked by the malware.

Don't know what you call the screen that shows up when you do a left click on the Windows icon on the main screen and a large box opens up with a bunch of little boxes of apps/programs that I have set up and use for quick access.
Anyway, the programs and the names are there that open the programs but the icons that used to be there associated with the programs are all gone.
How can I get them back?
thanks

Hello,

I have malware that prevents me from running anti-malware programs (unless their names are changed to aliases). It also makes its presence known when I am NOT connected to the Internet. In that instance, a message box informs me that "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services" is not working, and gives me the option of sending or not sending the relevant information.

I attach to this thread the "Attach" output from DDS and the .log file from GMER. Unfortunately, I was unable to save the Scan results from GMER in any format other than .log, and when I tried to use the "Copy" function within GMER, my machine froze.

I have also run (in safe mode) MBAM, SpybotSD, SUPERAntiSpyware and the Windows kb890830 malware-detection apps. The first three DID find infected files, which I removed/quarantined in each of the respective apps. Perhaps not surprisingly, the Windows malware detection scan did not pick up anything.

I apologise for the dreadful formatting of the GMER output; the .log file is (I hope) uploaded.

Kind regards,
Adam

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with some icons in windows 10, some of them are not being displayed by windows.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

A:Missing icons in some apps

Are the icons only problematic in the start menu or is the same problem for these particular icons showing on the executable on your C: drive? I'm not in front of my Windows 10 machine right now but if memory serves correctly you can right click these short cuts and select 'more' and then 'open file location'. I wonder how the icons look in here. If they are wrong try right clicking and properties and see if you can change the icon from there.

If the icons look ok in file explorer you could also try to pin the short cuts to the start menu again.

It could also be a problem with the icon cache. One of the more educated gurus might be able to advise better but I believe the default icon cache is set very low by Microsoft. A meagre 500 kb - God knows why so low in this day and age. Sometimes if the upper limit of this is reached it can cause icon corruption. There is a registry edit that can increase the icon cache to more acceptable level. Hopefully someone can back up my ascertion and knows the correct registry path.

Hello Emperor,

Sure, you can. Anything that you "Pin to Start" from another location will not be added to the Apps screen. It only pins to the Start screen.

If you like, you can add and remove items from the Apps screen though. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial below though.

I'm running XP Pro on a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I have two users on it, mine being the main one. No passwords, no difference between them. The other user works fine, no issues. There's no icons on my desktop, and I can't righ click to see if a refresh would work.

I can click on the Start menu, but I can't get anything to run. The cursor moves as if it's loading the program, then stops. Nothing is running in the task manager.

On the other user, I've run a defrag, a virus scan, a spyware scan, and everything else I could possibly think of. Any ideas why one user would be fine, and the other doesn't function??

I like the Windows 7 task bar the way it is. I want to have only large icons instead of a long tail of icons and text. So I don't need to unmix all the icons. But I run both Firefox and Aurora. For those who don't know, Aurora is the night build of the same Firefox. Windows, somehow detects them as the same thing, which they're not, and stacks the icons. Now I use the two browsers for different purposes and I would like to tell Windows 7 task bar: Aurora is something different, like Opera or Chrome and I would like it displayed as such. Could you help?

If you have one you can try a system restore to a time before this happened. You could also try down loading the ISO from MS and doing a in-place repair install. Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums
To do the in-place repair mount the ISO by double clicking on it. Then look for the install.exe and clicking on it. This will repair Windows 10 without you loosing anything and hopefully fixing your problem.

Got a weird bug that's just happened:

This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.

They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.

Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

A:Some App icons in Metro All Apps screen missing

I tried deleting the icon cache file file but it didn't fix it.
I also tried installing a new software and it too did not get an icon created in the menu.
However, if I pin it to start menu the app's icon works there.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite U840W-10J, have had it for around 20 months with no problems until now. Without warning and seemingly at random times, my laptop loses its ability to launch any application. If I select an application icon from the start menu/desktop or a file in a folder, nothing happens. Applications that are already open when the problem hits work fine, if I close them I cannot reopen them. My desktop then goes black and my desktop icons disappear, all except the recycle bin.

I can only restart the computer by either holding down the power key or using CTRL + ALT + DEL. On restarting my laptop it will then work as normal for a time before the same thing happens again. I am running Windows 8.1 and have McAfee Internet Security installed. The problem started about 2 weeks ago.

Any ideas or support would be much appreciated.

Thanks

A:Satellite U840W - Clicking icons/apps - nothing happens

Hi iwan_imp

According to your message the whole notebook problems could appear due to some software/system malfunction... I think that nobody will be able to say what’s wrong with the preinstalled system but you could try to solve the issue cleaning the registry and the operating system.

How?

I could recommend you one, freeware tool called CCleaner… this software was already mentioned in different forum threads and it helps you to clean the registry and to remove the temporal stored files…

In case this software does not help you, try to repair the system using the Windows 8.1 repair solutions: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2A03ES0000R01.htm
The “Refresh” option could be the key here…

But in worst case, if you would not be able to solve the problem using the “refresh” option, then you could try to recover the notebook using the Toshiba HDD recovery… so “Reset your PC” would be the next possible step…

On my Surface 3 Pro, in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 (tech preview), my taskbar icons are blank for any Windows Store apps. The icons are normal for other apps (like MS Office, Explorer, etc...).

I am betting it has something to do with a group policy. But I can't find anyone else out there with this problem. I've reimaged the device, upgraded from 8 -> 8.1 -> 10. Nothing has changed.
When I first got the Surface - it all worked great. I could see the icons fine. As soon as I joined the device to our corporate domain, that is when the problem started happening. I have tried connecting to the internet from home (thinking it was a network/firewall issue at work) but that did not solve it.

See the attached screenshot (it's a screenshot of Windows 10 - but the same thing was happening in Windows 8 and 8.1). It does this for any of the "apps".

Any ideas what group policies might affect this? Any other ideas?
