I don't want to bock facebook because we have a company site, but I would love to block the use of this particular application. The office computers use windows xp, but that about all I know about them. Please help. grace

Preferred Solution: shared computer application blocking.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: shared computer application blocking.

Why not just ask?
Tell them what the problem is, point out that you're on company time and I'm sure goodness and mercy will follow.
Then, block it.

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

we are developing an ad blocking application in VB in which the ad server url's are saved in the users HOST file. This way these listed url's will be blocked.

There is one slight help that we need...

When a user visits a web site , and there is a new banner ad displayed... how to retrieve the url of that banner AD without manually right clicking and going to properties and copying the url and then pasting it in the HOST editor.

We want to automate this process.

for eg: when user hovers over the AD, a block button should appear. On clicking the button, the URL of that AD should be copied and pasted in the HOSt editor.

Please do help asap. Our project deadline is few days from now.

Hi there, a friend reccomended this site to me. I have had this thing for a while but it seems to "hibernate" so to speak. It's spyware possibly. Hi folks. I wasn't sure which forum this belonged in, so apologies if this is the wrong place.

I'm working with a hardened Win7 x32 machine right now that's part of a domain that has a very strict (military) GPO set assigned to it. I have an application that sends unicast traffic on one machine, and an application that receives it on the other.

Before applying the GPO set, everything works as it should. The receiving application gets the traffic and all is well. As soon as I join the receiving machine to the domain and get the policies, the traffic stops working. Here's where it gets weird.

I am logged in as domain admin on both machines, and I CAN get unicast traffic out of the receiving machine to other hosts. I have the windows firewall service stopped on the receiving machine, and if I run a netstat I can see the ports open. Additionally, if I wireshark the NIC, I see the traffic from my originating box getting ot the receiving machine - it just doesn't make it to the application.

Short version:

- Computer sends traffic to My_Receiving_Machine
- Ports are open on My_Receiving_Machine, verified in netstat
- I see the traffic I'm sending to it on the NIC in Wireshark on My_Receiving_Machine
- Windows firewall service is stopped on My_Receiving_Machine
- Traffic does not get to application, regardless of port

I'm not the most familiar with GPO so I'm just going through them all right now hoping to stumble across it, but I'm hoping someone can save me a ... Read more

I have a Watchguard FireBox 1000x firewall that is providing NAT, Content filtering and VPN for my school district. One of the features of my firewall is the ability to block files based on their file extension. I currently am blocking .exe's and .zips and a bunch of other ones. This has really cut down on the amount of spyware that is being installed. Yesterday I decided to start blocking .vbs scripts. Now I am getting a lot of lines in my log like this one:

10/21/04 14:24 http-proxy[16874]: [] Request denied: Unsafe URL `/includes/flash/dispatcher.vbs' denied

Are .vbs extensions used for a lot of legitimate sites? Should I allow them?

Here's the full list of extensions I'm currently blocking, does anyone see any others that I should allow, or maybe I'm missing some that I should be blocking. All input is appreciated.

A:Firewall application level extension blocking opinion

I believe this is to verify your currntly loaded version of Flash Player on the client PC. It is better to leave the VBS files blocked as they probably really don't need to be running any flash animations.

I seem to have some sort of virus but have been unable to detect it with numerous virus/spyware/malware checkers.

First started noticing something fishy when browser links redirected to various unintended sites. About the same time I noticed the my McAfee virus scanner continually failed to update. Several locations on McAfee's site intended to help determine my problem also fail to load in my browser.

I've tried several other free/demo virus scanners and spyware checkers but most require a download on or after setup which ends up failing just like McAfee.

I have several computers at home so I've been able to get around some of the download problems by downloading from a clean computer then copying over to my infected one. That's only gotten me so far though and none of it really seems to have made an impact.

In addition to the behavior described above, several applications are being blocked from executing. This includes regedit.exe and cmd.exe as well as both the DDS and GMER utilities this site's instructions state need to be run before posting.

I've learned that if I rename the files to something different (I've been putting underscores between all the characters) then the apps will run. That at least got me to the point where I could generate the required logs needed for this post.

I've been working on fixing this for days myself. I hate having bug someone else when there's a chance I can fix the problem on my own. I'm pretty much out of things t... Read more

I have run into Windows XP Software Restriction Policies blocking installations twice in the last day. The policies are blocking executables running from Application Data folders. You can see the blocking of the installation of Dashlane Premium. Last night another program's auto-update function was blocked with the same error message.

I don't know why these programs are putting executables in Application Data folders. Is there any potential harm in it? I understand that Software Restriction Policies can be altered. Any reason not to save myself from this nuisance by allowing launches from Application Data folders?

A:Application Data folders subject to Software Restriction Policy blocking executables--necessary?

As far as I know, AppData is used for the local user data, for updates and settings.

For example, when you are asked "Install for All users or Current user":

Current User will use AppData folder.
All Users will use Program Files.
What's in the hidden Windows AppData Folder, and how to find it if you need it
Store and retrieve settings and other app data

I shared a Canon Pixma MP170 printer on a Windows 7 Home Premium machine. I can see the shared printer name over the network from the XP machine within Add Printer Wizard screen. When I try to add the shared Canon printer on a Windows XP SP3 computer it says it will connect to the printer to download drivers but than it says no drivers are available.
Then it opens up a screen that asks me to provide an unnamed INF file. I put the install CD for the Pixma in the CD tray and pointed it to all Canon INF files located on the CD (one at a time) but it will not go any further. I also found same type of Canon printer INF files within the Program Files/Canon printer folder, but it would not use those either to complete printer add.

Am I missing some procedure that is needed to add a shared printer on a Windows XP computer from a different operating system such as Windows 7 Home Premium?

The Canon MP170 works both when plugged into XP machine and Win7 machine through USB port

We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. I followed all the instructions and watched videos to see how to set up network and etc. I believe that I have done everything I need on Windows' part.

Now, I am having another Mac, namely MacBook Air. When I typed in the server address (smb ip), it says that I couldn't access it. Ask the administrator......

OK, but I share whatever files I want and turned them on in the Windows, and the previous MacBook worked and could get the files from my Windows PC, why not this new Mac?

I'm new here. I have a question about web surfing and download privacy. I share a computer with my ex-boyfriend who is currently still a "roommate," as we share a lease. (It's complicated). He seems to be aware of (or rather, able to retrieve) everything I surf and everything I download, including Real Player downloads -- even though I always clear the cache and run Ccleaner. Can you tell me how he's doing this? I'm especially curious about Real Player since I have the settings to not remember download history. There's nothing particularly private about anything I download, but the fact that I cannot do so with any privacy is upsetting.

I'm also wondering, given his level of skills at seemingly retrieving anything, what the probability may be that he has been able to retrieve my passwords or emails. I also don't know how to find hidden keyloggers. I do run Spybot periodically, but I think Spybot can be told manually to ignore things like keyloggers, right?

I use XP and usually surf with Firefox. I realize the easiest solution here is to stop sharing a computer, but I cannot afford to do that at the moment, so any help would be much appreciated.

I seriously think I got the omega virus or something. I have no idea how things got this badly. I seriously don't even do anything! But somehow I got the nastiest malware I have ever seen.

This is very nasty stuff. First of all it makes it so every single one of my banners on ANY website all advertise for Viramax (penis augmentation). Second, it makes it so none of my Antivirus programs can update. Third, it spams pop-ups. Fourth, it redirects me when I do google searches. Fifth, it will not even let me go to the download page of some Antivirus/Firewall programs. If I try to download Zone Alarm I can't do it. It just tells me there is a page load error. Oh and Sixth, It will not go away! I have done countless Spybot and Adaware scans and have found myself every five minutes redeleting the same "cookie" infections. They just keep respawning. I have also tried installing several antivirus programs that boot from a thumbdrive. (I updated them before I booted them up on the infected computer) and they deleted several viruses, but that apparantly didn't fix the problem.

Please help me. I have no idea how this could have happened, and it is a major problem for me. Thank you very much for your time

A:cannot access shared drive on other computer

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

I have Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit that struggles along to see the shared resources of other computers on the LAN even if the "Network discovery" and "Files and Printers Sharing" options of the "Advanced sharing settings" applet are enabled.

In other words, if I click on Network in Windows Explorer, no computer on the LAN is displayed; whereas, if I write "\\<ComputerName>" in the address bar, I can see with difficulty its shared resources.

This fact is in each account.

I have no firewall active, I use the network of type "Work" and I do not use the homegroup feature.

The operating systems on the target computers are Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3. The computers have the same time.

How can I check whether the SMB protocol is working properly?

How do I fix this?

Surely SOMEONE out there knows how to fix my dilemma. If I have not provided enough information. Please tell me what you need to know. I really need a solution for this. Stopping the share at the Windows 7 machine disrupts other computers. So, that is not really a solution.
Windows 8.1x64 clean install from dvd. I have a private network configured as a Workgroup consisting of a W2000 photocopy machine,XP desktop, W7 desktop and laptop and now a Windows 8.1 desktop. During the initial installation I have files on the Windows 7 desktop I need so from Windows Explorer I clicked on the Windows 7 computer to gain access to the password shared folders and their files.
I entered the User and Password info and clicked the "stay connnected" as I expected to reboot several times during this computers installation.

Everything worked just great UNTIL I no longer wanted the connection to the Windows 7 computer.
On XP and even Windows 7 it was trivial to Disconnect a computer that I had established a share with.

However, on Windows 8.1 I cannot figure out how to do it. How do I disconnect the share with the Windows 7 computer?

This may seem trivial but I cannot figure it out. Obviously I can disconnect from the W7 computer but that computer is shared with others as well. And then the other computers would have to re-establish their shares. And, that would just be a work around.

Please help me by telling me the right way to do this...

Thanks in advance!

A:Cannot DISCONNECT a shared Computer on Network

I give up. Perhaps someone on another website can help me.

Hello, I share a computer with my family and I believe that it's security may have been compromised. I can't be positive, but we do use this computer to handle financial matters so I just felt I had to make sure. In essence, this is a "is my computer clean" post but it would be very reassuring to know that our monetary assets were safe.

The computer is an Asus Laptop, running on Windows Vista 64 bit. The main reason why I believe that it is infected is because some of the members in my family click on popups and open emails that should not be opened. I do have adblock enabled on google chrome now so that issue has been resolved, but I feel that the damage may already have been done. There are a few different programs that launch when I start the computer that I have never seen before, which caused alarm and brought me here.

Please, it would be very reassuring if someone could assist me.

I had a server computer that was running windows 7. It was working like a charm, but suddenly I was unable to remote to it. I found a monitor and keyboard that I connected. My server then told me that it had installed windows 10. Wow thanks? That is something I would like to have a say in? But oh well might as well get with the times and use windows 10.
As I am using it as a server it is running, iis, ftp, plex, and some other servers. Most of it were still working after the conversion to windows 10, but I?m been having some real problems with the normal sharing of files. When I use my desktop computer (also running windows 10) to brows the network I get the following error when dobbelt-clicking my server computer:
?\\SERVERNAME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon faliure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.?
So ok? there are always problems with filesharing with a new windows installation. So I did the following:
? Made sure file and printer sharing were turned on
? It was using: Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computer
? Password protected sharing sharing were turned off
? I turned on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders
? My network adapter is using my router ip address as DNS server

Hello everyone,

I have a problem at my work. A person from HR is leaving for a vacation and we will have her assistant working on her computer. However, due to confidentiality of most of the information we want her assistant to have access to only a few of her sub folders. I have tried using share options but it always asks me to share the main folder as well and then everything is shared between the two accounts. Secondly, I have tried to give special permition to the assistant's account going to folders preferences but it did not work at all.

Would you have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

A:One computer, two accounts and only a few sub-folders shared

Have you thought about not sharing and making files with different names for the new help? Then after vacation, you can save the new files with the old name.

I have 2 windows 7 computers and i'm trying to share a folder (that I want password protection on) outside of the homegroup.
Both computers are part of the same workgroup and I have the same user account/password combination on both computers plus I have password protected sharing turned on in the network and sharing centre along with file and printer sharing turned on.

On computer 1 I have right clicked and selected that I want the folder shared. When I navigate via the network on computer 2 to computer 1 the shared folder shows up on computer 2 but double clicking on it to open it gives me an alert saying I don't have permission to access it, no option to type in the user name and password (according to the help files I shouldn't even need to type the password in if both computers have the same username/password anyway but would need it if I'm logged in as a different user). It's just a blanket denial of access.

We have a network with a server running 2003 and all 63 computers using xp pro.

the 3 office computers need to access a shared folder, containing a frequently used program, on one of these computers. (This folder cannot be stored on the server as the program doesn't work then. It is also easier as only one computer needs the frequent program updates). I have done this by mapping a drive to the folder.

The user of Computer A has left and I changed the username and password on server and computer.

When I tried to connect using Computer B I was prompted for a username and password to access it and everything was fine. But computer C didn't give me this option. I disconnected the drive and tried to remap it.

computer A has the folder, computer B can access the folder and program, computer C can see the computer but not the folder.

All computers were recently upgraded from win 98 with fresh install except Computer C which was just upgraded over the top (Lazy tech guys couldn't be bothered to reformat)

I have called in tech guys but they take 3 days to arrive and usually mess things up

Has anyone any ideas on why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mel

A:Can see computer but not shared folder on network

What are you the System Admin or Network Engineer?

Computer C has to be re-formated with a fresh copy of XP. So that would have to be done if the lazy tech didn't do it right the first time.

Sounds like your remoting into these Computer A, Computer B and Computer C. Can you go out to their location and see what's going on? If you can't get the techs to do since you have to wait 3 days. Computer C needs to be taken care of.

Each PC A, B, C need to be setup in Active Directory so you can administer them correctly.

I'm running a pretty simple LAN network. I have a D-link DGL-4500 and about 2 computers running constantly on the WORKGROUP network (plus an old D-link router that I disabled the DHCP server on to run as a switch for my PS3 and Xbox). I want to share two certain folders with anyone that brings their computer over, but block my roommate from being able to access these folders. When I turn on Password Protected Sharing, anyone that comes over is prompted for a username and password, and instead of giving them the info each time, I would love to simply block my roommates computer alone. Something like \\VENTO is an exception to the everyone full access rule.

I have my A+ certification, but permissions and such in windows 7 is a little new to me and haven't had a lot of time to fiddle with advanced network options (still trying to memorize the address range to the different classes...Anyone have a rhyming scheme?) . So any complex jargon you may have I can comprehend

Both my roommate and myself are running windows 7 ultimate. Any help is appreciated.

A:How to block one computer from LAN without blocking everyone else

If you remove the permissions from "Everyone" on the individual folders and add individual permissions at which ever level you wish, to each user account that you wish to have access, that should do the trick.

Workgroup networking does not use the computer object as is used in a domain so all permissions are user based.

You could also create a new user group and give this the permissions you need then assign the allowed user to this group - how you go depends on what variation of accessibility you need for your users

My computer and internet were working fine when I went to bed at about 11pm last night, and when I got up this morning I was playing around online checking my e-mail and blogs and everything with no problems. IE8 and Firefox are working just fine to browse internet websites. When I tried to connect to Yahoo! messenger, ventrilo and World of Warcraft, it failed. It said that I wasn't connected to the internet, so I went back to my internet browser and everything was still working fine. I called my ISP and they did some troubleshooting with me for my router and network, and still couldn't figure out what the problem is. They had me go to my DOS window and try to ping one of the ventrilo servers that I commonly use (specifically the one that was working fine last night), and even after connecting directly to my internet radio (skipping the router) and disabling my firewall, it couldn't ping that address. They said that it seems that something on my computer specifically is blocking these programs from working. I'm not exactly computer savvy, so I need help, please!

Try going into your internet Options and making sure there is no proxy server enabled.

Start -->Control Panel --> Internet Options
Click on the Connections Tab --> LAN Settings
uncheck everything in there. Especially the Use a proxy server for your LAN option
see if that makes any difference.

My son used to do all this but he got a job and moved away, and left me in limbo! Can I block certain web sites on my computer by word, like blocking all sites with the word Cuckold, or bondage, or porn, or sex, just by word? I know you can block certain sites, and I don't know how to do that so any information will be appreciated. But I need to know if I can block any site on the computer that comes up with certain words. I am the Administrator on the computer, and I've tried searching the help files, but they don't help much! (I'm tired of an idiot husband who visits sites that put stuff on the computer making me run Adaware, Spybot, and several other things every day to remove junk off the computer.) Thanks!

What it seems to me is you are looking for parental software monitors. You can look on http://www.download.com, as they have some parental software there for free and it is really great. It is ran by the Geek Squad, and I use it for many reasons. Look under the Parental Guardian software, I am sure you will find one. Hi All,
We are upgrading our office to windows 8, but 1 computer is hardly ever used and is running XP. It will stay with XP, and should not be allowed to go online for security reasons.

All computers are networked, and share printers thru a netgear vpn router. Of cause they all can go online. Question: How can I prevent the XP computer from going online?

I opened the netgear router settings ( ), but can not find any setting blocking a computer from going on line.
Any one familiar with this router and is able to tell me how to do that?

Hey guys, I'm Ix.

So, my problem is this: My laptop is blocking email servers and also a LAN I tried to connect to. I've tried gmail, hotmail, and yahoo, and I can get to the log in screen but when I log in, I get an error message which says "the connection was refused when attempting to contact x". I tried to connect to a LAN and it didn't show up as something I could connect to. So I think that my computer is blocking these things.
It's not my browser; I've tried IE and firefox. I've checked my firewalls. My norton firewall expired recently, so it's not functioning, and the default firewall for windows is turned off. I've looked at internet options in the control panel and found no blocked sites. I did three spyware checks, with spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, and hijackthis, but found nothing.
I'm sort of out of ideas. The only thing that has changed is that I've lost my firewall/antivirus. But that wouldn't block things, would it? So yeah. I don't know what to do next.
If anyone has any ideas, that would be really helpful.

Thanks :)

I would suggest you do check on your Norton. Even though it is expired, that only keeps you from updating and it does not mean the program does not work without updates. That simply means that you will not be able to upgrade to the latest virus definitions. It would be my guess that Norton is blocking what you want to not be blocked.

Therefore, after you check that, I would suggest that you quickly put a free antivirus program on that computer, because you can not afford to be without one. Here is a free one you can download called AVG:

Here is a list of possible reasons, i would spend a while going through the list starting at the top and then trying it again sfter each 2 changes for example

-Open IE and click Help, About Internet Explorer and look at the Cipher Strength. It should be 128 bit. If the Cipher Strength is anything less then 128-bit, download and install the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack.

-Open IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and scroll to bottom of list. The SSL and TLS options (all versions) should be checked.

-Delete Cookies, Delete Files and Clear History in Tools, Internet Options, General tab. (Deleting Cookies may delete some stored Internet passwords.) Check the Delete all off-line content checkbox.

-Uncheck the box for Enable Third Party Browser Extensions in the Advanced Section (all other settings in Advanced Section are set to Default). Click Apply and close and open IE.

-Configure Security settings for the Trusted sites zone in IE: IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security tab, select Trusted sites, Default Level. Sites, enter the address (URL) of the site in the Add this Web site to the zone: box, Add, OK, Apply.

-Check Firewall/Network Configuration. Make sure that the SSL port (port 443) is open on your network/firewall (if you have any). There are many different Firewall/Network products, so we can't give set-by-step instructions. Check the documentation or help file of the product you use.
