Thinkpad T460s: connecting external display via HD...

Q: Thinkpad T460s: connecting external display via HD...

Just got my new lenovo Thinkpad T460s, so far everything is going perfect. I just ran into an issue. When connecting an external screen via a standard HDMI cable to my Thinkpad T460s, the notebook does not detect the second screen. All the information on the lenovo website sugests that it should atomatically detect external screen via HDMI connection. Is there something I am missing? * Restarting does not work* Updating the display driver does not work* Cable does work on other notebooks Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am trying to connect a ThinkPad t460s to my 27'' Apple Thunderbolt display. There's a port on the right hand side of my notebook which accepts the connection from the Thunderbolt plug, but nothing shows up on my display when I plug it in.  I am not a computer person and have no idea why this is happening. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I have a Yoga 260 and two external monitors.  It does not seem to matter how I connect them, USB, HDMI, whatever the thing with a square on one end and USB on the other, directly or through a splicer I can not get the Yoga to recognize the third screen individually (yoga has one monitor, plus 2 external monitors = 3). I go to display settings but it just will not recognize the third monitor at all unless I use HDMI out of the laptop in to a splicer then 2 HDMIs out and in that case I only get duplicates on the two external screens. Any suggestions about the best way to set up... as in "it worked for me when I connected USB to one monitor, then daisy chained that to a second one" or "it worked for me when I HDMI to one screen and USB to a second" etc... Thank you

Is it possible to connect a Thinkpad laptop to two external monitors? Does the computer allow for that within "display settings"? So in "customize display", when you have your laptop + 1 external monitor, it identifies primary and secondary as 1 and 2. Would it incorporate a third? Would it work with "extend display"? Also, would it work from perspective of connecting the monitor? I'm currently deciding which Thinkpad to purchase, but say I have an X1 carbon, there is only HDMI cable. Are there alternate means of connecting the second external monitor? Any input would be much appreciated!!

Dear forum,  yesterday I bought my new ThinkPad t470. While everything else is working fine, the notebook seems not to be able to detect my external monitor (ThinkVision t2424p), when connecting it via a VGA to HDMI adapter. This setup flawlessly worked with my last notebook. Regardless whether I try to connect the monitor when Windows is already running or when I boot into Windows with the monitor already connected, the monitor doesn't show up in the screen resolutions settings nor does there appear an additional device in the device manager.  Do you know what the problem might be? The apater works fine when used with a different Notebook. Thank you very much, EBM

I have a Dell Inpiron N5110 laptop and Id like to connect a Viewsonic display to it. I've tried connecting directly to the VGA port and to the HDMI port using a HDMI to VGA converter cable with no success. The display says 'NO SIGNAL' using both the laptops HDMI and VGA ports.
On a previous Dell Inspiron laptop, running XP,  I had no problem connecting and using the Viewsonic. On that laptop all I had to do was right click on the desktop, click Display Setting and Video Output to the VGA port. Win7 doesnt have that option.
Can someone tell me how to get this external display working off of my 5110 Win7 laptop?

A:Connecting and then using an external display

HDMI is digital - VGA is analog.  Are you using an active connector/converter or a simple cable (the latter won't work).

Am I missing something? The VGA-RCA cable ALSO has a SVideo female and also tried that one.

I already clicked the windows key+x to add it manually thru the "mobility" settings.

I feel like a complete fool to be having to ask this... However, I was wondering if and how i could connect my laptop (HP G70 if it makes a difference) to a TV, via hdmi. My laptop has a port which would be logical to be usable as an output, but when I managed to find the bit of the control panel that is supposed to be used for configuring the connection I couldn't work out what to do to make my laptop acknowledge the existence of the TV. I'd be very grateful if someone could shed some light on my predicament.

Many thanks, Chris

Edit: I'm terribly sorry if this is a common issue and there are posts below, but searched briefly and didn't find anything that I could use

Hello,
I've been trying to fix this problem for a couple of days with long phone calls to Dell and Asus coming to no avail.
My Alienware 15 laptop will happily to connect to other monitors and TVs via HDMI (without BSOD).
However whenever I try to connect it to my Asus PB287Q Monitor, I get an instant BSOD with error line PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (igdkmd64.sys).
I have tried troubleshooting by connecting via DP and HDMI (and using a range of cables). I have tried powering both on together and separately.
The Monitor works fine with other laptops via both HDMI and DP connections.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I have connected a Thinkpad X1 carbon (model:20BS0057AD) to ThinkPad OneLink Dock which further connects to a ThinkVision Pro2820 28-inch LCD monitor using DisplayPort. In order for the display to work through the dock I have to power down and power up the Dock and Monitor for the monitor to receive display signal. Once its working and I disconnect the dock from the laptop and reconnect it back, the monitor will not come on and remain in low power mode with amber light. I then have to go through the power down and power up cycle for the monitor to display laptop output signal or else it will remain in low power mode. Previously was using a Thinkvision L2251p monitor and never faced any such issue. Is there a fix for this issue

Hello,

I have a Windows 7 64-bit laptop and thought that it would be a good idea to try and find a way to connect it to an external display, in order to watch movies/play games with a bigger image etc.

I do not own an LCD/Digital type display in this house, but we do have an old JVC CRD-type analogue television (big 22" +). Of course, it's not a widescreen, it's a 4:3. So I bought a VGA to RCA Cable and connected the laptop to it that way.

However, there is an obvious problem in that it displays the picture in an almost sepia colour tone and times 3, each spaced next to the other horizontally. I have taken a picture, should my explanation not do it justice:

Please could some one explain to me, what it is that I would need to do, in order to get it to display correctly?

Oh - to note, my laptop was bought in the UK, and the TV I am attempting to use is Canadian - would this make any difference?

Many Thanks,

Tom

This model is with Xeon CPU, Quadro P2000 graphics card and 1080 screen. The model of the monitor is Dell U2713HM.  When I connect my P52 to this dell monitor via a miniDP to Displayport cable, the monitor model is recognized in "Nvidia control panel" and "Display settings" of Windows, but in Display setting it shows "second display is not active". The screen remains black with a floating window: "no signal received".  Attempts so far: - In BIOS, I tried switching the graphics option from "hybrid" to "discrete", and set the start-up delay to 10 seconds. When I restart, the start-up Lenovo logo and the BIOS interface is displayed on the external Dell monitor. However, as the machine enters windows, the external display goes black (and so does the laptop display, until I unplug the cable).  - Also, I tried the miniDP to DP cable on other machines and the same screen. Works fine.  - When the laptop is connected to the same screen via a miniDP to DVI-D connector and a DVI-D cable, the Dell display works, regardless of whether I am in "discrete" or "hybrid status". However, I need to set "customize resolution"  in the Nvidia control panel to "2560x1440 40Hz" manually. (Dell display should work at 2560x1440 @ 60Hz, but it does not). Anyway, it shows that the miniDP port is not broken.   - The monitor works alright when connected to Lenovo D20, a desktop computer that I... Read more

Hello Community, I am looking for your assistance regarding a topic with the external display I am currently using. I am running a Windows 10 on my laptop and after an update of the nVidia drivers - I have an issue with the signal going through the HDMI cable. While the External display is plugged in - it is using the Intel Integrated. I have came across a similar topic in here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z50-70-HDMI-not-working-when-connecting-... And I have done almost everything except the "RESTART" option. I have checked the HDMI cable and it is High speed - and yes, I am sure - the issue first appeared when I updated the drivers. Now I have reverted to older version of the drivers but still experience the issue.

A:Thinkpad Carbon X1 Display BLANK after Update - External Monitor Works

I spent a day working on an issue and want to share to save folks time.  Bottom line, Intel Graphics Drivers WDDM 1.0, 1.1., 1.2, 1.3 automatically updated with Windows and broke the system. BIOS and Lenovo splash screen showed and safe mode worked fine showing this was not a hardware issue.  Windows began to load and the screen went black.  I connected an external monitor via HDMI, pressed power for 2 seconds to put the machine to sleep, pressed power again for 2 seconds and it woke up on the 2nd monitor. In Device Manager, the 2nd (HP w2007) monitor showed up and there was no mention of the laptop physically connected display. I reinstalled Windows 10 and all was well until the auto-update occurred and I had the same issue.I installed Windows 7 and all was well until I installed all updates, same issue. I didn't think this was a display adapter problem because the 2nd monitor worked just fine and it was the monitor that didn't show in Device Manager.  Alas, my assumption was incorrect. After HOURS of selecting which Windows 7 updates to install, nearly 180, I finally narrowed it down.  I thought it was a Windows problem, turns out this was an Intel Graphics driver issue. SOLUTION: I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the Intel Graphics driver program and the system recovers.  Sadly, in both Windows 10 and WIndows 7, the auto updates would put the drivers back and the same problem recurred.  I was finall... My Thinkpad Yoga 15 has a problem, which may or may not be related to the BIOS update recently performed. When booting, the bootup screen only appears on an external monitor via the HDMI output. When performing the hardware tests in the BIOS, tests are done on the HDMI-connected display, the internal display does not seem to be recognized. I verified this using both Linux and Windows. It does not seem to be a hardware failure; I have been able to get the display on the internal LCD a few times, by powering down the laptop, holding the power button for about 20 seconds, then powering back on while pressing F1. The laptop will then function for a while, but loses its display after coming out of sleep. Needless to say, this is unworkable. Does anyone have any tips on how this could be fixed in a more permanent fashion or any indication to cause? BIOS does not allow me to turn off NVIDIA, or its opposite, to enable it exclusively. I also tried different drivers, from both Lenovo as well as NVIDIA and Intel, but to no avail. Any pointers appreciated.

Hello, I have Thinkpad T440 (i5-4300U, Intel HD Graphics 4400). I am considering buying a LCD display with WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440) and I am wondering wheather it will work with T440. Important thing is that it will work with 60 Hz refresh ratio. According to the specification [1] it should work: "[email protected] (DisplayPort via Mini DisplayPort cable on integrated models)", but the refresh ratio is pretty low - 30Hz. The specification [2] for i5-4300U, Intel HD Graphics 4400 says something different: "Max Resolution (DP)? [email protected]". So the refresh ration is higher than in T440 specification - 60Hz. Also quick reference quide to Intel processors [3] confirms the resolution and refresh ratio: "U-Processors: 3200 x 2000 @ 60 Hz, 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz". Is 2560 x 1440 @ 60 Hz supported on T440? I hope that ThinkPad T440 specification is not accurate enough and that limit to 30 Hz refresh ratio only applies for 4k resolution (3840 x 2160). [1] http://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20T440/ThinkPad_T440_Platform_Specificatio...[2] https://ark.intel.com/products/76308/Intel-Core-i5-4300U-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-2_90-GHz[3] https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/quick-reference-guide-to-intel-processor-graphics

I have just purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad W540. But currently we have issue with the built-in display. The phenomenon as below: 1. When power on - The built in display can show welcome screen, and even enter the BIOS setup screen. If let it boot normally, the built-in screen then off.2. When booted to Windows 8. The built in display still off. If I connect an external display to the VGA connector, the external display work well. Checked the display option see that it is "clone display --> Built in + External Display". I suspect that there is some thing wrong with the display setting that I don't know how to adjust to get the built-in display works properly. Note that I can see the build in display backlighting but there is no picture shown when in screen cloning setup. Can some one help on this ? Regards Triet Tran

Hiseems T460s (20F9) is wors than my previous laptop T420s, I can't move it so freely as before. At certain point the mouse cursor just stops moving and have to use force with a finger to make it move anywhere. I noticed the cap hole is now much smaller than f.ex. I have a Thinkpad T460s since a couple of months. It's the i7 edition with 20GB/1TB edition. The device has been working fine so far, although the CPU fan had to be replaced shortly after I got it (rattling noise). Since a couple of days, the Thinkpad is spinning up the fan very often. Just a simple interaction such as opening Chrome triggers the fan to blow quite loud for some time (20-30s at least). When compiling using Visual Studio, the fan almost spins to the loudest it possibly can. The thing is: it didn't do that all of the time I've had it.  Even when it's completely idle (say 0-2%), the fan still humms a little bit (it didn't do that before either). Could this indicate a hardware issue? I have NBD support but should know whether this could indicate some failure. Thanks for any advice.

Hello all,I recently bought a Thinkpad T460s with no LCD Unit off of eBay. I've been looking around and there are no complete LCD Unit assemblies under the compatible parts page. Is there another model (t450s, t470s) that I can buy an LCD Unit for, and put it on this laptop myself?Thank you in advance

I bought a new Thinkpad T460s laptop from Lenevo online store. I ordered a Intel i7-6600U CPU at 3.4GHz processor, but they sent me a 2.8GHz processor. When I asked them they replied it is 3.4GHz but not showing due to power saving. But I do not agree with their response. So Lenevo please provide me a valid answer. Thank you.

Hello everybody, I have problems setting up the wwan module EM7455 under Ubuntu 16.10 (kernel: 4.10.0-13-generic). I have extensively googled, tried most of the approaches, but nothing seems to work for me.  The module is recognized, but I can't connect to any network. The area is all greyed out (see picture). The LTE-frequency-bands of my provider (Salt, Switzerland) are covered by the module (3, 7, 20) usb-devices

Hi, Since this morning, my 3 week old ThinkPad T460s started making some weird fan noise. When spinning up and also while slowing down (so not on higher speeds), there's a rattling noise coming from the laptop. Sounds a bit as if the fan is brushing against something or perhaps some trembling/interference?Also at really slow fan activity, this is audible quite heavily. Up until now, that noise wasn't audible at all. Should I be calling in support (I have on-site support for this machine)? I don't assume this is normal for a new machine to happen? Thanks!

Hello,I bought the Card EM7345 for my lenovo t460s laptop. When I opened my laptop,it somehow seems incomaptible... the wires and the connection point at the card em7345 seems to be male. So I wonder if the card and the laptop could not be used together (it is not mentioned in the hardwarecompatibilty table)? [But other people here at forum report that could be used togetherhttps://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4aawmj/t460s_wwan/ ?] Or another stuff necessary to connect to laptop and card? Thanks!

I have searched all forums including this one and have been unable to find a resolution to my issue.I have had my laptop (Thinkpad T460s) for just over a year now and use it for work daily. I was using it with no issue at lunch, but when I opened the lid around 3 hours later - the screen was black and the laptop seemed to be stuck in sleep mode. I tried a hard reset and now I can not even get the Lenovo post menu to show.If I press the power button, the keyboard momentarily turns on the backlighting and the power button stays illuminated, after about a minute the power button turns off. This entire time the laptop screen is completely black, I don't see the Lenovo post menu and therefore have no acces to the BIOS or OS.I have tried using the hardware reset button on the bottom of the laptop, removing the 2 discreet batteries, removing the CMOS battery, removing all batteries and resetting the RAM. None of this has gotten me any headway on resolving this issue. I am going to try contacting technical support but am hoping someone may help me find a quick and simple resolution to this issue.
