Corrupt Hard Drive. CHKNTFS /X G: Gives ERROR: the specified i/o operation on hs was not completed before the time-out period expired

Q: Corrupt Hard Drive. CHKNTFS /X G: Gives ERROR: the specified i/o operation on hs was not completed before the time-out period expired

Dear Community,
My G: Drive has one or multiple corrupt (dirty) files on it. Normally you can trouble shoot the problem, but this isn't working.
Going more indepth to solve the problem I tried the following command: CHKNTFS /X G: in CMD (Command Prompt).

This initally seemes to work but after some time it gives the following error:
"the specified i/o operation on hs was not completed before the time-out period expired"

Then you have 3 options, to cancel, try again or continue. Either way it's not solving the problem, which is to make my G: drive workable again.
Who can help me with this? I've added some screenshots the steps and errors i'm encountering.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I read somewhere that if you lock the card that you can view the files, but you still cannot write to or from the disk. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Please help, I really need to use this disk.

As I had a spare copy of Win 7 (upgrade version)

I decided to configure a new Hard Drive (Which I have on swappable pull out trays)

So to make sure there were no bugs or glitches, this is what I did.

(1) Formatted the Drive

(2) Clean Install of Win XP

(3) Clean Install of Win 7 (To Upgrade XP to Win 7)

(4) Using an Iso Disk I burned I then installed a free upgrade to Win 10 (which was accepted and registered by MS)

Everything was fine except for one thing.

When I try and use MS Edge, I get a banner on the Screen which says 'This App can't open, your trial period for this App has now expired.

Visit the Windows Store to purchase the Full App

Then there is a Link to go to the Store but there is no sign of an App for MS Edge!

I don't understand what's going on here, so need some advice what to do.

I've still got Edge on this Hard Drive but not on this other New Drive.

Try this that I found it may work for you as I have had no trouble at all
***YOU MUST HAVE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL SERVICE RUNNING FOR THIS TO WORK***

1. Find C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
2. Right-click and Run as Administrator
3. Copy this line:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

4. Right-click in the Powershell window to Paste and then press Enter.
5. There is no need to restart. The fix should implement right away.

If you have previously disabled Windows Firewall or do not have it running, the above steps will result in errors. Use the steps below to enable Windows Firewall and the reverse if you wish to turn it off again afterwards.

1. Right-click the Start button -> Click Run
2. Type Services.msc and press Enter
3. Scroll down to find Windows Firewall
4. Right-click then click Properties
5. Under Startup Type dropdown -> Select Manual. Click Apply
6. In the top left portion of the Services Window, Click Start this service.
7. Now follow the steps in the first section, and it should work.

These steps worked for this guy
They have no guarantee to work for you
Also worked for the other person as well.

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

Windows can't open Add a Printer Operation could not be completed (error 0x000006b5)

I am able to run Add a printer using the command prompt rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /il"

When the Add a printer window opens I get as far as selecting the port and there are no ports listed not even in the drop down. It worked fine yesterday and nothing new has been installed or uninstalled. I have tried disconnecting my printer from the desktop and rebooting without the printer and then reconnecting the printer and rebooting, Nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium x64.

I admit I even tried to add the printer on my Vista Laptop, Windows 7 laptop and the printer seems to be crapping out on each one. I am thinking it is possible my printer is dead but can someone confimr that?

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

Once you activate your copy of XP, everything should be just as you left it.

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Also, I am not familiar with Green TD... I don't know if changing the priority of the process will help your lag at all.

An old GF called me with a *lovely* problem..

She was cleaning up old files on her machine.. And seems to have cleaned way too much.

Now, when she tries to use the add printer wizard, she gets 'Operation Could Not be completed'. I checked Microsoft, and got info on the spooler not running. Trying to start the spooler (which DOES show stopped) get's a 1068 error.

I'm NOT an XP person (She's got XP Home).. and she's in another state, so I'm helping via the phone... We've been trying to use the Restore, but it keeps failing, and suggesting we try a different restore date/time.

On older systems, I'd know what to do, but under XP, I have no clue.. Any ideas? Or even ideas where to start?

This a Tiny URL of the 2 mile long link by Symantec and my problem:
http://tinyurl.com/arngx
For some strange reason my NIS 2003--the NAV part of it--is giving me a warning that a complete scan of my hard drive was not completed. I have had WinXP Pro set for automatic scan each Friday since I installed NIS last November on WinXP. Would a System Restore be in order? And if so, how would I do that? I was out of town each of the past 2 Fridays and those scans were not done. A scan would be done tomorrow night but now, of course, that will not be done because of my problem. I have the NIS installation CD but I do not want to have go through that "**((#" uninstall/reinstall routine again. (I had to do that with NIS 2002 just a few days ago for some other reason. Not resolved either so I switched to AVG.)
In addition to this scan problem, my virus definitions were not updated even though automatic updates are set to be done so I went to the Symantec site and downloaded/installed the latest updates so I am not worried about that.
Does anyone have a work around the problem I have posted? And I hope I have described the problem well enough for someone to help me. As usual, TIA.
BTW, I have been using NIS/NAV for several years and all of a sudden I begin having problems. Puzzled!!
EDIT: I have just run Panda and Trend Micro Housecall and both gave me a clean bill of health

Hello,

I am using a BlacX USB 3.0 hard drive docking station with a WD Caviar Black 2 TB internal hard drive.

Do not have USB 3.0 on my machine yet, so I have the docking station connected via USB 2.0.

After 12 hours, my drive is only 23% formatted. Is the Slowwwwww formatting of the 2 TB drive normal or is it because I am using USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0?

It I let this continue, is there a way to find out how many hours the process took?
I have another 2 TB drive, which I will not format until I have purchased and installed a USB 3.0 PCIe card. Once installed, I want to compare the completion time using USB 2.0 ans USB 3.0.

Thanks

Stu

A:Formatting a 2TB hard drive: 12 hours later it is only 23% completed.

Why not just perform a quick format. It should take care of that in about 5 minutes or less.

I am trying to install a canon IP3000 printer on a computer it has previously been installed on. Print head died and we have replaced it, in the meantime we bought a canon MP280 and installed that. When I uninstalled the MP280 after getting the new print head, and tried to reinstall the IP3000 from the disk, the installer gets to 60% and says it is creating folders, then the error system cannot find specified files comes up. I get the above message if i try to use Add printer in XP. All old drivers have been removed and i have tried renaming c:windows\system32\spool\driver\w32x86. I am at a dead end for things to try, can anyone help please.

I'am trying to install a printer on my friend's machine, but I still have getting message: Printer Driver Was Not Installed. Operation Could Not Be Completed". No matter which model, just general for all printers. Most funny is that computer recognize the printer, but won't install drivers.
I found similar problem in other forum, but no answer.

Hello,
I'm not able to add a printer driver using the standard printer wizard or otherwise. I get the generic message, "Printer driver was not installed. Operation could not be completed." I'm logged on as administrator, the spooler is running, I've installed SP2, and this problem exists for all the printers I have tried.
It doesn't seem to matter which model I try to install. One is an HP 4500DN, another is an HP 5si. I have the latest drivers and have tried downloading the latest drivers, but I still get the message.
Dave

Any idea what's wrong? I have some experience, but I'v never seen this kind of problem before.

As I know computer was cleaned from viruses. I guess some trojans made a huge disorder in this system.

When I scanned a disc with "chkdsk /r" command I recognized two partitions (systems?), I mean C:\Windows, and D:\MiniNT.

What is MiniNT? I read this problem can occur also if there is two systems on the disc.

I have no more ideas, maybe somebody has more xperience in this area?

I will appreciate for any help.

Matt

We are migrating from XP to Windows 7 and using USMT offline to migrate user settings etc.
Network printers are migrated but on the users first login if the user tries to set their default printer they receive the following error message:-

"Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709) Double check the printer name and make sure that the printer is connected to the network."

The printer is in fact installed and it is possible to print a test print, just not set the default printer.

The issue is resolved by restarting the print spooler (or logging out and back in or rebooting or re-installing the printer) so is only
an issue during the users first login.                                                                                                                             ... Read more

Hi,
According to the error message, I assume that the spooler service cannot find out the printer on the network.

You may set the startup type of Printer Spooler service to Manual or Delayed Start for a test.Juke Chou

I'm formatting a hardware raid5 drive using the drive management mmc snap-in, and it's taking forever. What is making matters worse is that it doesn't show the percentage completed, it just says "ntfs, formatting" on the screen.

Is there a command line or other tool to show me how far along the formatting is as a percentage? like 2% complete, 50% complete, and so on.

A:Hard Drive says formatting - doesn't show percentage completed

Not that I know of, but if you are doing a so called "full format", it can take 3 hours or so on a 1 TB drive, if I recall correctly.

Hello, when I start my computer (Windows XP SP3) I get a command prompt window stating:The operation has completed successfullyThe operation has completed successfullyThe operation has completed successfullyThe operation has completed successfullyThe command prompt location is: "C:\Documents and Settings\[my login name]\Local Settings\Temp" and the file is called 599.exeI'm not sure what this file is, I scanned with Norton Internet Security 2009 and it did not detect a virus. I've scanned my computer with Spybot search and destroy and NIS to see if I have any virus's or spyware etc. nothing comes up.Below is the DSS.txt file, attached is the attach file.I've removed any instances of my login name and replaced it with "[login name]" the weird thing is the 599.exe process running the in background and the very very odd thing is the folder which has random numbers and then my full name "C:\Program Files\1218164934" as processes. Folder contains: "[full name]1218164934L.exe", "[full name]1218164934W.exe" and a folder with my full name. inside that folder are the following files: "1218164934.box1", "1218164934.box2", "1218164934.box3", "12181649341", "12181649342". A:On windows XP SP3 start - Command prompt message: The operation has completed successfully (4x)

on the next restart my computer went haywire. I guess I needed a restart to figure out the problem. 'Advanced virus remover' was the problem, spybot search and destroy cleaned it all out. I cleaned out my temp folder to stop the 599.exe (nero was not the problem as I uninstalled it and still received the screen). I edited the start menu items to take out 599.exe and a file called winupdate.exe which was also put there along with another file similar to it that had been put in my prefetch folder with a .pf extension. I deleted the [my full name] folder and misc. files in there by booting into linux. Also I had this problem ( hxxp://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090708110026AAvP5bk ) I followed the directionsDownload LSPFix.exe from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm and run. Check Off <I know what I'm doing...> Move Winhelper.dll to the Remove side. Click Finish. Reboot.I should have guessed something like that was up since firefox worked fine (except for that problem) and IE couldn't even connect.Hope that helps anyone with the same problem as me!

You still have a virus, ran into this one about 3 weeks ago on a cust computer.

Boot into safe mode and run Malwarebytes. Once clean boot in normal, run malewarebytes again and superanystpyware and this should fix your issue.

This error, "the semaphore timeout period has expired" keeps popping up when I transfer files over a network. They'll go for about half, and then this error pops up and it's over.

How do I fix that?

Is this a Linksys Router?

Wired or WIFI?

Are you using an Internet Security Suite or ZoneAlarm?
This may also be thr problem....
This can happen when the total path length of the source file
and the total path length of the destination file are greater than a given
value, 128 I believe. When this occures in windows, it results in a Path
