Slow download speeds, Fast upload speeds. Other devices are fine.

Q: Slow download speeds, Fast upload speeds. Other devices are fine.

My computer has extremely slow download speeds, upload speeds are fine. Ping is always at ~10-20ms. (to Google) The problem has nothing to do with, my ISP, my router, my type of connection. I know this for a fact.

I've tried multiple network adapters. USB WiFi, integrated WiFi, connecting through another PC via ethernet, they all give the same result.

I'm guessing this is a problem with some software on the PC itself, as it seems to not be a hardware problem.

All other devices on the network have perfectly fine speeds, including Ethernet and WiFi connected devices.
I also cannot connect this PC to Ethernet, would take hours.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi there, i was wondering if you could help me this problem i've been having for the past 3 days now. I recently downgraded from Vista to XP, and ever since then i've had download speeds of 5kb/s or less. Before now, i couldn't get onto anywebsites because it would time out, things like www.yahoo.com would take about 5 minutes to open properly. I did notice that when i was asked which partition to install XP on there was 2 sub partitions on the C drive for some reason. Anyway long story short, i managed to fix it by using the format option from booting the pc with the vista installation disk, then put xp in etc.
So, browsing speeds are normal for me, but i can't get on my online games because it just times out due to the slow download speeds, and anything large in size takes extremely long to download even with internet download manager, I've been waiting 10+ minutes for windows live messenger to finish downloading and installing and it still hasn't done so.
If you could have a look at my hijack this log and let me know what you see wrong it'd be much appreciated thanks.
Not sure if this is to do with a virus, ran AVG, Malawarebytes etc and they haven't picked anything up.

I can connect the cable into my laptop and it get my full 100meg Internet speed.

I have updated my drivers to the latest ones and that hasn't helped.

I can however remote desktop into it without issue and stream media files off it without a problem.

I have tried speed tests from multiple sites and on multiple devices both wired and wireless. All have fine download speeds, but the uploads are as high as 1.7mbps and as low as 0.3mbps.

I have a Motorola 7550 gateway. However, this issue was still present when using a separate modem and router prior to it.

I have AT&T DSL internet service and I'm using their 2-Wire 2701HG-B modem/router plus all my phones lines connected to a phone or Sat receiver have their filters installed on them. I'm subscribed to their 3Mbps plan but for quite awhile now I've noticed very slow internet speed.

Going to Speedtest.net - Results or Speed Test | Bandwidth | Broadband Internet Services I'm getting download readings as low as .23Kbps to 2.73Mbps (the latter very, very seldon) with an average of under 1.0Mbps.

AT&T did a ping or something and can tell I have noise on the line so they say it's probably either the router or one of the phone lines so this morning a tech dropped off a new router (same brand/model) but I can't see any improvement.

When the tech came the other day he hooked up his small modem from my phone line to his laptop and ran a speed test and it was consistently 2.5Mbps.

So are there any settings on my modem/router that could be slowing things down? Or do you think one of my phone lines is causing the problem?

A:Slow Download/Upload Speeds

you may want to check for background services using TCP connections.
Via Command prompt, type in: netstat -b

This will list the current connections your services are running. If you see public ip addresses in the list, you know you have a background service (hopefully) connecting to a web address.

usual connections are antivirus and update services like; adobe and windows updates.

Do you have any Comcast branded programs installed on the computer? Comcast does not have a stellar history when it comes to branded software.  Everything they've come out with and branded seems to cause issues for some people.
What modem do you have? If it is an older modem it can cause what you describe. However, since you say the laptops are fine I'm doubtful the modem is the culprit.
If you have a router it seems as if that would cause all computers to suffer.
Is your desktop connected directly to your router or do you connect it wirelessly?
I'm grasping at straws here.

Hi there.

So today my friend and I, who live in the same country, was downloading this file. It was around 6GB, which is irrelevant, but yea. It was from the same site, we have the same internet, yet he was downloading with 2.6MB/s while I was downloading with 1.338MB/s and it stayed like that for the remaining 40 minutes. Didn't even move at one point, while his went from 2.1 to 2.6 over 10 minutes.
Worth noting, we use the same ISP, he only have 25/2 while I have 50/5, and I could easily download 2 files with the exact same speed (1.338MB/s each), but not 1 with 2.6MB/s or more. There's also a client downloader, for this game, where he again got 2.6+ whereas mine always stayed at an amazing 80-180kb/s. I tried disabling anti virus, firewall, Malwarebytes, nothing changed it. I know you're thinking it's just the seeds or site that is limited to an x number of download speed, but it really can't be the case in this. It happens with every site I try. It's always at 1.3xMB/s and never moves regardless of how good it is.
I honestly don't remember, but I don't think this happens when it's a .torrent file, using programs like uTorrent with good p2p. It happens in all browsers, and apparently game client downloaders.
I can download 5 different downloads at 1.3xMB/s using all of my available internet, but when it comes to a single file, it for some reason, is impossible.

A lot of rambling in this thread, I apologize.

A:Fast connection to router but slow download speeds?

Your signal strength is so low that you should not expect very good network speed from this connection. I'd also say that this connection will not be very stable with only one bar.

That is definitely not a fast connection to the router. How it works is the weaker the signal strength the slower the connection is going to be.

You might want to considering installing a wireless N access point in a location closer to where you need to connect from.

Here is what's possible using the 802.11n Only setting, 5 bar signal strength with WPA2 security and AES encryption, which are both made to work at wireless N speeds.

I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

Any ideas?

If we assume you are not hit by evil infection, then it might be relevant that an older post of yours show you have router with firmware not updated since long. Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums try search for it here. Lots of problems like this v4.21.1 of Linksys WRT54G Firmware is Bad - Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums though you can say the same for many routers.

So why dont you update to Tomato firmware? If it qualifies, Tomato FAQ | polarcloud.com

That way you can let router handle dynamic IP update (Basic, DDNS) and also get a little boost by increasing build in cache. Advanced, DHCP/DNS can be set up like in the pic. In older post I lost url to did you say Opendns ips changed? They should not. Only 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are allowed I think, see pic for how it looks in Tomato.

Read up on Tomato site, there should not be a risk by "flashing" - can go back. Also dont wonder where firewall went - it is not possible to turn it off

If browsers are hosed by infection good luck Opendns can have problems in certain areas but should be temporarily. Infection is more likely than opendns messing up if set up correctly.

Recently in the past few days my load speed for webpages has been sporadically terrible. Sometimes it will be fine, but other times it will take absolutely ages to load the page and then sometimes not even load it at all, and not load pictures, etc, as well as online streaming, which has always been fine for me and something I used to do often with no lag, has been lagging and buffering nonstop.

But meanwhile, even when the load speeds and stream speeds are horrible, my ping and general internet performance outside of browser-based things seems to be fine. I can see constant ping on one program and it has always reacted when my internet is poor, spiking high or just generally showing high numbers, but it always stays low, and I can see just based on reaction speed on internet programs as well as experience no lag whatsoever on online games that the internet speed seems to be fine outside of browser-based activities. I have tried different browsers, and this problem persists on my laptop as well as my new and fairly decent PC so I don't think it is a computer problem.

I've even tried booting into safe mode with networking and loading pages and when it is bad it remains bad even in safe mode, failing to load even pictures on some websites.

I have used Speakeasy.net for many years to measure the speed of my Comcast cable connection. Speakeasy gives you several servers to use for the test. I live in Delaware, and if I pick the NYC, DC or Atlanta servers, the speeds are unbelievable; for example, NYC a few minutes ago: 21Mbps download, 7.3Mbps. But if I select Seattle, the speeds are substantially lower: 10Mbps download, 1.3Mbps upload.

Why is there so much difference based on the location of the server? I have always assumed that it was because using a server very far away does not really measure the native connection speed because the data is having to travel through multiple servers or terminals between Delaware and Seattle. When I pick an eastern server, the packet travels through far fewer intermediate servers/terminals, so can get to and from the test server much faster. Is that true, or am I (as usual) all wet?

Good evening,

Starting on Tuesday of this past week, my wife and I started to notice a decline in our internet quality. We are on the 20up/2down plan from Time Warner Cable but the speeds have dropped to an unusable level. My most recent speedtest.com result provided the following result when on wireless (results nearly identical when wired):

0.22 Down
1.59 Up
42ms ping

The figures are a bit different at pingtest.net

0% packet loss
92ms ping
52ms jitter

My Xbox One (which is hard wired as well) provides the following :

0.33 Down
2.11 Up
5% packet loss
107ms

In addition to performing these tests I have additionally done the following steps to correct the issue:
1. Check and interchange the coax cable and took the splitter out of the line
2. Tried every channel on the router
3. Setup the router in at every cable jack in every room of the house
4. Taken every electronic device (except one laptop) off the connection.
5. Completed the flushdsn command
6. Cleared the cache on all internet browsers
7. Replaced the router (was provided a new router by TWC) - Ubee DVW3201

Nothing that I have done has helped improve the quality of the connection to anywhere near proper levels. Please let me know if there are any additional step that I can take to improve this connection. Thank you

Hello!
I've started having this problem lately with my internet where I cannot download anything off of a browser. I have no problem downloading through other things, I just pre-loaded the new borderlands game through steam at the full speed I normally get. But when I came around to try to reinstall Malwarebytes, League of Legends, and even watching Youtube videos I started having problems.
When I try to download anything like an installer or something the download will start at around 25kbps and slowly start going down in speed over the next 30 seconds until eventually the speed dissapears and it stays at 0bps until the download eventually fails.
First off, my internet isn't very good in the first place, but it's not so bad to the point that I download at 3.5 kb/s and eventually 0 b/s.

But I normally download (this is what steam has told me for the past 5 years) at around 150kbps.
I've been told to download Malwarebytes to try to solve the problem, but I can't really do that until Monday night because I'll have to take my laptop to school with me and use the campus wifi and put the installer on a thumb drive.

so please, any help would be appreciated.

Starting about 72 hours ago, my main work computer began having internet issues. I noticed it while trying to schedule posts on Facebook for our business page, but the image uploads on those posts were timing out before they finished. I shrugged it off thinking it was a Facebook problem at first. The following day, I was still having the same issues and Facebook appeared to be working normally on my home computer and phone, so I started trouble shooting. I attempted to run a speedtest through my ISP's website, download worked fine, upload timed out. Reset our cable modem and router, same problem. We have a wired router, not wireless, so I tried swapping ports on the router with another computer that was not having any problems. Still no luck. I bypassed the router and connected directly to the modem, still no luck. speedtest.net has the same results. Tried both Chrome and Edge, same result. Called my ISP for support, they ran diagnostics on the modem, it's fine (which I figured since another computer on the network works). They had me uninstall or disable all firewalls and antivirus - still no luck. We uninstalled the network card and let Windows reinstall it. Tried swapping out ethernet cable, multiple reboots, ran Malware Bytes & CC Cleaner. They basically gave up and offered me the numbers for HP and Microsoft. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. Can anyone point me in the right direction to figure out what's causing this problem? I'm out of ideas.

Hi there I'm new to the forums. I couldn't find a topic with the same problem so I'm starting my own thread.

I'm having extremely slow uplead speeds. I've tested it on Speekeast.net, cnet.com and speedtest.net

The average speeds I'm getting are between 1kbps to 28kbps upload

my download speeds seems to be normal around 6mbps

So far in my troubleshooting I've called Comcast, they said everything is fine on their end(one lady said I'm dropping about 10% of the packets sent, I don't think that's normal) I'm connected thru a wireless router but I've hooked up my PC directly to the modem with the same result. I've also hooked up the modem to my laptop with the same result.

I'm running out of ideas on what it could be. I don't think it's my PC or router because I"m getting the same problems without them hooked up. I don't have any background services running that would use internet traffic, disabled my firewall and antivirus, and tried about everthing I could think of.

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it. I'm at a loss

2003-06-01 20:13:33 EST: 1497 / 12
Your download speed : 1497176 bps, or 1497 kbps.
A 182.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 12421 bps, or 12 kbps.
Your upstream result was very slow! .. not good
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
Any ideas on how to fix my upload speed. I got IE 6 and windows xp.
Thanks,
Stefan

I'm having trouble with slow upload speeds on my vista ultimate x64 machine. My ISP is providing a 25/25 connection and the download is working fine but the upload is only at ~1mb. My router is provided by my ISP(Verizon) and just has their name on it with a model number of MI424WR on it. I have other computers running XP on the network that can upload/download just fine and if i plug the ethernet cable thats in my vista machine into my laptop that's running XP it can upload/dowload just fine. The slow upload occurs when trying to transfer files over the network as well as when online. I had Avg anti-virus installed but have since uninstalled it and have not seen any change in the upload speed. I also tried turning off Remote Differential Compression but it seemed to have no effect on the upload speed.

My system specs are as follows:

ASUS P5N-T Deluxe NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI Core 2 Quad Socket 775 1333MHz PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) ATX Motherboard
INTEL Core 2 Extreme QX9650 3.00 GHz 1333 MHz Socket 775 12MB
BFG GeForce 9800 GX2 1GB PCI Express 2.0 Video Card
WESTERN DIGITAL VelociRaptor 300GB SATA II 10,000 RPM 16MB Buffer Hard Drive
PATRIOT 4GB PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) DDR2 Memory

Any help or comments are appreciated Thank you

A:Slow Upload speeds

It could be a driver setting, check the device manager for the ethernet adapter's settings and check that everything is correct. I know some cards default to full 10/100 duplex, maybe something went wrong was accidentally changed.

Hope this helps. If not post back

Hi,
I am on a company network and when I do a speedtest (at www.speedtest.net) I get a great download speed (6200 kb/s) not I have virtual no upload speed ( 7 kb/s) while others on the same network in the office (we are 7) have simular download speeds and upload speeds of 378 kb/s. Any idea's?
Thanks

Not offhand, but I'd talk to the IT folks, there could be a variety of reasons. For what I hope are obvious reasons, we don't get involved in tinkering with company networks.

Alright, so. I have been using my main desktop for a while. To connect to the internet, I have a WiFi transmitter downstairs next to my modem and router, and a WiFi receiver next to my desktop. I tested it with a couple different online speed test, and got about 7 Mbps Down (Ping: 19). Now, using the same internet connection setup, on my laptop, I get about 25 Mbps Down (Ping: 18). On my desktop I get a solid 800Kbps down on a steam download, while on my laptop I get about 1.5 Mbps.

Is there anyway to make my download speed (Desktop) on steam more closely match the download speed shown on my laptops speed test?

DirectX Diagnostic

Already Tried:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Disabling Avast
Adding an Exception in Avast
Making sure steam had No Limit set as the download speed.
Checking download region on steam
Went down Steam's list of known programs to cause problems with downloads

Possible Solutions:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe Steam is seeing the read and write speed of my hard drive and then throttling download speed accordingly?
Some Issue with Windows 10? (Both Devices are Windows 10, so probably not)
Some Issue with a program on my computer?

P.S. I will be going to bed soon. I will check back when I wake up.

Hey all. I am connected to the internet on a wired connection to a Linksys BEFW11S4 router, with a WebStar modem. About a week ago, my internet connection started to be really slow at times, but it took me a few days to actually figure out what it was.
I've found that when I try to download or upload with uTorrent (a torrent client), send a file to a buddy on AIM (instant messenger), upload a file to my googlepages account, or upload a file to www.yousendit.com, it goes verrry slowly. For example, trying to upload a ~5 meg file on yousendit takes about 5 minutes, and I just sent my friend a 6 meg file on AIM, and it took around 8 minutes.

Now, two things: One, my brother is connected wirelessly to the router I mentioned. A day or two he sent me a screenshot (which is around 3 megs), and it just took a couple seconds. And yesterday I sent him a file that was at least 3 or 4 megs, and it only took a matter of seconds. So I would guess the router is fine, since we connected quickly through it.
Second, it has seemed, at least with uTorrent and yousendit, that when I try to use them, the rest of my applications that use the internet get slow. With uTorrent open, the speeds aren't very fast, and my websites don't load quickly, and even checking away mesasges takes a few seconds each. When I close the connections in uTorrent, things speed up again. I think the same happens for yousendit.

I was already on the uTorrent forums (when I thought it was a problem ju... Read more

PLEASE HELP
I've been having an issue for about a month now, my gaming PC running windows 7 64bit on a 1000/50mbps plan is only getting .06-.08mbps upload.  Download, I have no issues - upload, I have tested ethernet, wifi on both 2.4gHz and 5gHz bands with the
same result both hardlined to my wireless router and to my modem.  I have an iphone 7+ and a samsung galaxy note8 that both reach 51-52mbps easily when connected to wifi.  I have even tried disabling both nics and USB tethering on my LTE data,
both phones getting ~10mbps upload standalone but my pc still only getting .6-.8.  So this lead me to believe that Windows is the issue, as it is getting consistently low upload speeds via 3 methods of delivery (wireless, ethernet, USB)
What I have done to troubleshoot in windows
Reinstalled all NIC drivers
Reinstalled motherboard drivers
Run virus/malware scans in safe mode
Updated Router Firmware
Disabled IPv6 in router config
Disabled Large Send Offload v2 in NIC settings
Tested w/ standalone PCIe NIC
Replaced Cat5e cable with brand new Cat6

I am going insane, I know that my modem is getting the speed because of the two wireless devices that are consistently hitting 50-52mbps.  I know that unless 8 USB ports, an on-board NIC and a PCIe NIC, and a PCIe wireless-AC adapter are faulty, that
my hardware is not to blame. I have tried speed tests using all configurations of wireless/wireline/usb/direct to modem, and have ensured that t... Read more

Early this morning (around 1 AM) my upload speeds were cut severely.

Here's my speed test results:
I've had this same problem before so I called my ISP and aksed them about it and they said they'd do some tests over there.

What could have caused this twice? It's only my connection because none of my friends in the area seem to be having problems and they didn't get any calls about it.

P.S.: My upload speeds are usually over 700 KB/s on speedtest.net -- and I've tried using different servers.

Thanks,
AC

Roughly 2-3 days ago, my computer suddenly started having great difficulty loading webpages, especially with loading images. Also seem to have very low upload speeds (possibly unrelated).

My computer is connected to the modem through a router, shared with one other computer that is not experiencing any of the problems I have been.

At the outset of these issues I tried resolving by restarting the modem/router and computer, and connecting my computer directly to the modem, and used different ethernet cables, with no effect. I've run a variety of anti-virus and malware/spyware scans, which also produced no results. I've perused my computers processes and networking for anything unusual and didn't notice anything (but my experience is limited and I could well have missed something).

When testing my connection speed with a speedtest from my ISP (comcast), I had a 9ms ping and 30Mbps download, both of which are normal for my service, but had an abysmal 0.10Mbps Upload speed. A couple of other anomalous behaviors I noticed are having no unusual latency in online games, and no problems streaming video (with the exception of a longer wait for videos to start).

Following are a few test results that could be helpful:

Speedtest:
Ping 10ms
Download 30.42 Mbps
Upload 0.11 Mbps

Hello!
Im running a windows xp with a router/modem setup. I pay for 3mb internet, and get the download end of it. But my problem is, dispite the test telling me i have 100-150k per second, I never can cap over 25. This is over lets say, multiple torrents in azureus, even though its set higher, various FTP programs can't cap 25, and neither can bearshare and other p2p networks. Anybody know whats going on?

Maybe its a sign for you to stay away from theft rings which is basically what p2p programs are..

All i will tell you is its not your internet but your router configuration..

I need some serious help, and fast!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently, my upload speeds have been very slow. My download speeds are fine, and pages load normally. It is not my ISP, because I have several computers on my network, and the one I'm using (which has Vista, by the way) is the only one with the issue. I have a very strong feeling it is some sort of spyware or trojan, but after scanning my computer with AVG, Spyware doctor, spyware begone, ad aware 2007, windows defender, and many other anti-spyware programs (yes im very desperate to get this fixed) it still wont go away! The only software that came even remotely close to helping me was Spy Sweeper, which scans my PC, and then tells me i have to pay a fee to remove the viruses. My other theory is that this computer's network settings are messed up, but i doubt it. I do diagnose and repair, and i do not get any issues. I even reset my router and IP and everything and get no results! So, if anyone can offer any settings i should attempt to change or any anti-spyware programs I should try, the please tell me! Im willing to pirate software if i have to!

Hi,

I have a weird issue that I hope someone can help with.

I have a Business Network connected to XLN Telecom FTTC Fibre, going through the BT Openreach Modem and a Netgear WNDR4500 Router. The Router then connects to a Netgear ProSafe Switch.
I have about 12 XP Desktops and Notebooks on my network (business so need XP really).

Recently the Microsoft Security Essentials program started crashing the PCs and hanging on the welcome screen, so I just removed it, and all was well.
A few days later ALL the XP PCs have experienced seriously slow UPLOAD Speeds when doign a Speed Test. The Fibre but it has always been slow, around 8mbps download and 2 - 4mpbs upload. On the XP machines I am getting 5mbps download but only 0.01mbps upload, with a ping of about 300ms.

Gmail and most websites work okay, but secure websites such as eBay and my website CP go really slow or time out. Some websites are also very slow, but if you us IE InPrivate or Chrome Incognito they seem to work much faster.

I thought it was the line, so changed router, factory reset modem, bypassed all the network (connecting a PC directly to the modem and router), had the ISP do line checks.
BTOpenreach have been and tested the line and equipment (they said everything seemed fine) but changed the Filter in the socket and the Modem to the latest design.

I have also tried a few virus and malware tools to make sure it is not a virus (which would be strange on ALL the PCs at the same time anyway)
