I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello maskin26,

Make sure that you don't have any media in the drives (cd,floppy, etc)

Was anything recently added before the problem?

Boot into the BIOS and make sure that the HDD is recognized by the system and check the boot order.

Hey everyone. I have a test tomorrow and I've been reviewing everything. So far it's been easy except for what should be the simplest thing. I have one vmware running Windows Server 2003 with IIS hosting a web site, and I'm trying to connect to that site either locally or from a XP vmware, but neither are able to connect. I updated my Hosts file with the relevant host name and IP address and flushed my DNS cache but it still spits out errors both locally and on my XP vmware.

So, I go and install DNS on my W2K3 Server vmware and add the forward and reverse lookup zones and voila, it works with no other modifications.

What am I doing wrong here?

I have a question concerning the use of a Hosts File Manager alongside certain antispyware products. After performing a ton of research and in an attempt to be more secure online, I switched browsers from Internet Explorer to Opera (best move I ever made) and also started reading about Hosts File managers. I began using the HostMan program and used it for a long period of time without any problems or conflicts. Lately, however, for whatever reason (possibly because of the size the hosts file has become), my Microsoft Antispyware and Counterspy programs are giving me fits. They used to scan fine, but now lock up when dealing with the Hosts File (at least that is my theory). Microsoft Antispyware runs fine until it starts to look for browser hijacks - then it just stops. I click anywhere in the program and above in the window bar is says ("program is unresponsive"), so I have to just click on the "X" and get out of the program. Counterspy scans a little differently, and does a complete scan without getting tangled up in the hosts file. However, when I go into "System Tools" and attempt to run "My PC Checkup," it says "Checking common host file hijacks," the status bar goes about halfway, then the thing just locks up. I am not asking for specifics on the software in this forum, as I have been trying to get answers from support on this issue, but not getting very far. There are also issues I'm having with Ad-Aware and Sp... Read more

Testing Microsoft Security Essentials and the Hosts file

Computers on the Internet address each other with numbers. What appears as computerworld.com to a human being is to a computer. The system that translates between names and the underlying numbers (really IP addresses) is called DNS and it works very well. Too well, for some bad guys.

Many years ago, before the Internet, the translation between computer names and numbers was done by a file on each computer called the "hosts" file. Needless to say, as the number of computers got large, maintaining a hosts file on every computer became unrealistic. Now, when a computer is called on to reference another computer by name, it first makes a call into the DNS system to retrieve the underlying IP address.

Why the history lesson?

Microsoft never retired the hosts file* and bad guys abuse it.
For example, screwing up the mapping of names to numbers can prevent antivirus software from self-updating. Another tactic is to change the entry for bank websites. A computer with a maliciously modified hosts file can send someone to a duplicate copy of a bank web site, one that looks totally legit, but is designed to steal userids and passwords.

hi. ive done a bunch of digging on my own and found some applications which let you do this. (third party, apparently windows thinks allowing their users to color code files is HORRIBLE. **** knows why). im currently about to check out xyfolder, but im not sure if it will be the same as rainbow folders (another i checked out). rainbow folders only lets u change the color of your folders. i dont care about that i want to change the color of the text of individual file names.

the reason i want to do this is because i dj. it will make selecting different songs out of a collection of a few hundred MUCH easier. i can color code the tracks which are stand out amazing as a certain color and different styles of music another color and etc. it will help me SO much.

what kind of ap can i use to do this? (unless theres some secret way anyone knows of to just let win7 allow u to do this on your own?)

A:Color Code Individual File Names

There are easier ways to organise; you could use multiple folders.
Change the icon to different tracks- your most popular tracks could use a star as their icon, and so forth.

Different genres would be better suited in different folders?

I wasn't sure where to post this, so please feel free to move it if appropriate.I have Vista Home Premier and have Norton Internet Security on it. I just ran the "Security Inspector" module - and it came back with a message stating: IP addresses in Host file have been redirected - and it then gives me the option to "FIX."I don't really understand the message, haven't deliberately done anything to the Hosts file, and am I bit apprehensive about doing a "FIX" on something I don't understand. Can you tell me what might have caused this, or what I can check to see what it's talking about? Does the Host file come with the system, or is it built on-the-fly when I load applications, or ?? I am also using Spybot S&D and updating it and scanning weekly, as well as keeping Norton up-to-date and doing weekly scans.Any information will be greatly appreciated, 'cause this is beyond my level of "barely adequate" knowledge. Thanks!!!!

A:Ip Addresses In Hosts File

Norton seems to be alerting you to a program (in this case probably Spybot S&D), but could have been a malware, changing your default Windows Hosts file.

A Hosts file can be used for malicious re-directs by malware. But in this case, Spybot S&D (the Good Guy) is adding advertising and malicious sites to your Hosts file and redirects them to an IP address of (your own computer), thus blocking any connection to these bad sites.

Hopefully no need to worry about.

Hello, I need some help

I appear to have a couple of difficulties at present.

Firstly I appear to have some type of redirection taking place. I get the following message
when using system mechanic 6 and it cannot fix the problem. This occurs when I perform a Security optimization

Fixing Problem: Hosts file redirection at line #19 ( "f-secure.com" redirects to "")

Also when booting up I get two messages
Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtgddq\services.exe'
then Desktop could not load the above file specified in the registry. Make sure file exists on computer or remove reference from registry.

This is then repeated!

I have tried to look for a host file in the following location
However all that is there is a a file called lmhosts.sam

I do not know if this is significant but next to the drivers folder is a folder called DRVSTORE which is in blue text unlike the other files whose text is coloured in normal black.

Any help with this please would be appreciated.

I've been having big problems connecting to the internet over the past couple of weeks, although my antivirus (AVG) and spyware (Spybot) haven't reported any problems. Just installed the trial of System Mechanic, and it's come up with one issue it can't fix:

Hosts file redirection at line #20 ("localhost" redirects to "::1")

Is this likely to be a factor in my connection problems, never used HJT but hopefully I'll be copying the right data below.

So im an intern in a mid sized company and one of the first things i have been asked to do is locate some computers on the network and run a security scan on them. Well i pinged the host name (RANDOMNAME.COMPANYNAME.COM) and got an IP address. Then the network admin helped me look up the switch port that the computer is located on and so on. So i find 3 of the computers im looking for and when i get on the computer and look up the name but it does not match the name given to me. So i do an ipconfig /all and see that the computer has the right IP address and MAC address but not the same name. So my main question is, are these computers one in the same or is something messed up?

Also i looked on the active directory and both computers were listed, but like i said they have the same IP address.

A:Host names and IP addresses

For networking purposes, I'd look at it this way:

'host name': a user-friendly name given to the MAC on the network so that people won't have to memorize something as foreign as a long string of numbers and/or number-letters. There's no real reason (in a domain situation) that one computer can't have multiple of these; especially considering that a computer can use multiple network adapters. In certain situations, like in Domains, you can also set up aliases which are very similar.

IP Address: associated with a particular port on the router/switch so that the router/switch will know where to send traffic when the given MAC is specified.

MAC Address: the unique identifier of the particular network adapter. Computers can have multiple of these; possibly the reason for the multiple name(s) for the connection.

So, MAC Address is the true identifier that you have the right computer; though you can have multiple MACs on the same computer. I know it may seem confusing, just know that: If you have identified the MAC and the computer is reporting that it has that MAC, you have found the port into which the CAT5 (or other) cable is running.

For some reason when I modify "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" to bypass a DNS server it only works for that exact site.

If I use it for "www.pagewithbrokenDNS.com" I can enter the main page using that just fine, but if I type "www.pagewithbrokenDNS.com/forum" it gives me the error page and tries to use the DNS for it.

It works okay if I just copypaste the IP part every time but it's really tedious and most login things don't work (if any).

I am using Windows XP home edition.

I posted this in the wrong forum, a few days ago: and was advised to post it here,
with a new hjt log. They did say that I had more serious problems than just my host file needing to be restored. They also said that there didn't seem to be a firewall. How can I find out if I'm using Window's firewall?

Arovax Shield popped up a message: "Warning: Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

1. Now I can't use my anti-virus program, because it stalls (freezes) before it finishes.

2. I can't use Panda or any other on-line scanner, because it too freezes before it can

3. I can't shutdown my computer - not even cold boot! I have to completely unplug it!

4. I can't do a system restore, to a previous date. (I've tried several previous dates).

I have no idea how to restore the host file, and I have no idea how it was hijacked.

I have a group of files I created in Microsoft Works 3.0 ( word processing and spreadsheets.) I have the original files on Floppy Disc, Scan Disc, and on my Hard Drive. I have tried coverters, and the best results I have received are partial, or full text with symbols. Nothing with the original documents creation form and font style. I have been told that the only true way to see these files in their original form is to run the files through Works 3.0 with Windows 3.0 with MS DOS. ( before Windows had its own operating system. )
Is anyone out here running Microsoft Works 3.0, with Windows 3.0, on top of a MS DOS operating system. These files should open in their original form, and then are able to be save in DOC. format. All helps are Welcome!

Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed?
I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:

projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)

amongst other projects.
I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.

A:File Explorer Sort File names With Sub-Folder names

I don't know of a way to get Windows Explorer to do it. But XPlorer2 is supposed to have that sorting mode.
Edit: scroll down to "Folders sorted" in the table.

Probably it doesn't and my question is a long shot - but I recently toasted a drive, and it had many folders and files which I have little memory of. I also never used one of those nice apps that makes a list. Any help appreciated. Much obliged.

How do I delete this thread??

A:"Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

Try deleting or renaming the Hosts file.
It will be recreated, so no harm to try.
It's at:
It's named "HOSTS- no extension.
You can open this file with Notepad of you're curious enough to see what it says.

[Relevant OS here is XP sp2.] Hi! Norton Internet Security 2004 (which includes NAV) Live Update stopped working right on my parent's PC, couldn't be remedied, and I decided it was time to get rid of the beast as I had long meant to anyway, and put on AVG and one of the reputable free firewalls.

Knowing that for some tricky programs it's best to stop its services before uninstalling (e.g. zone alarm), I turned off all norton in msconfig and rebooted. That's apparently what caused my problem to begin -- guess norton services need to be left on to start an uninstall. It wouldn't uninstall, and only later did I see at the symantec site that the error message I was getting is often caused by services being stopped when uninstalling this product: "Error: A Norton Internet Security account with Supervisor access must be logged in... when uninstalling Norton Internet Security..." (Which was not accurate since I was logged on as sup/admin.)

I did manage to uninstall most lesser, "peripheral" norton components using Reg Cleaner free. Then, feeling fed up, I decided to be hasty (and insane?) and assume I could uninstall the primary parts by picking what I needed to out of Windows Explorer and the registry. After awhile it hit me how stoopid that was, since norton is so notorious for leaving leftovers that interfere with future security progs even when uninstalled properly. And, I saw that if I had checked symantec's site after first ... Read more

I am not sure what section this fits into so this seems the closest match.

After doing much researching into a probelm I am having Im am 98% sure that at one time I had spy/ad-ware but that it has been removed. However, said malicious program left changes in my HOSTS file that is causing random redirets when using any search engine on any browser (specifically Safari, IE, and FF).
I did some further searching and found that HOSTS file optimizers and hijack removers do exist. However, I dont want to use some cheap ass program that does more harm than good so here is my question:
Can anyone recommend such a program or somewhere that I can get a clean HOSTS file?

BTW, im using Xp SP3

File Operation
Microsoft Windows

I really hope that you can find ways to solve it...

A:Deleting a File Operation of Microsoft Windows

Hi ethan,

Often this error is a result of another program or process using the file that you are trying to delete.

Here are a couple of simple things to try: Close all programs that are running on the desktop and exit any programs running in the notification area of the taskbar, (just for clarification, the notification area is where the clock is on the lower right-had side of the screen.)

If that doesn't work, try restarting your computer and then deleting the file.

If neither of these approaches works, there are more advanced steps you can take to delete the file.

Also, any additional information about the file would be helpful. i.e. File name, file path, purpose of file, etc...

Let us know how it goes...

Hi guys, this has been going for a couple of days now,
I cannot loginto windows live messenger and cannot update my avira free edition anti virus
So I tried updating my AV one night and found that I could not - kept coming up with an error... I could browse the web and torrent etc and so I believed that it was an issue with the AV (which the free edition does not contain a firewall btw) so i did a virus scan, came back clean, hit the forums, everything indicated a change to my host file. ipconfig /flushdns and /renew, reboot modem etc did not fix the issue.
I do not have a static IP, default windows 7 firewall etc
I ignored the issue for the moment, but found a couple of days later that this was not just Avira but also Windows Live Messenger...
troubleshooting windows live messenger came up with an error Error 80048820: Cannot Sign-in to Windows Live Messenger
so I performed all the steps as technet suggested: Error 80048820: Cannot Sign-in to Windows Live Messenger
this has not worked, my Host file remains unchanged and there have not been any recent changes - please note that I am using a netbook without a DVD drive and i really dont want to create a bootable windows usb to fix this issue... ideas anyone?

Just a few hours ago WinPartorl alerted me that something was trying to change my HOST file, but i declined the permission. Shortly after I was booted from my gmail account when I was reading my emails. It said that someone logged in from a different location.

Also, this past week my fan had been acting really weird, started to make a lot of sounds, like the fan speed tripled or something. I had scanned my computer with SpyBot and AVG scanners and everything came up clean.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Microsoft confirms vulnerability in spreadsheet program
Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - A flaw in Microsoft Corp.'s Excel spreadsheet could allow criminals to remotely control a computer, the company confirmed Monday.

Microsoft, the world's biggest software maker, is aware of just one case in which a user was attacked via the vulnerability, according to a Web site posting by Mike Reavey, the company's lead security program manager.

In order to become infected, a person must open a maliciously formatted Excel document that is sent via e-mail or other means. The malicious code runs when the spreadsheet is opened. The infection makes it possible for a person to steal passwords, bank accounts and other sensitive information and to use the computer to send spam and carry out other illegal activities.Click to expand...

Turned on computer one day and it would not get passed the stadge when Microsoft Corporation appears and the bar underneath just keeps on going for ever.

I have tried the disc I made when I bought the computer as it did not come with any. These have reloaded the system once before and worked fine.
Also I made a recovery disk from the instructions on another site, but in both cases it does the loading windows files stadge and then gets stuck at the Microsoft corporation stadge.

Hope this makes sense and would appreciate any advice.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:

Hello, can anyone help with this problem please?

I have a 7-year Satellite laptop running Microsoft Windows XP.

When I tried to turn the system on today Windows did not start as normal but instead I got a blue screen with the following error message:-

*STOP: c0000218 (Registry file failure*
*Registry cannot locate the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\config\SOFTWARE*
*It is corrupt, advent or not writable*

How do I fix this please? The computer will not start up at all, even in SAFE mode. It had been working fine previously. I have never experienced anything like this before.

A:Registry file failure - Satellite A32 running Microsoft Windows XP

In your case I would take a Win XP disk and would try to reinstall the system.
Fact is that you are not able to boot in normal mode and safe mode? so I don?t see other solution for you.
Of course the blue screen of death might be related to hardware problem (HDD issue) and in such case the system installation would not fix it your problem. Then this would require new investigation?

I opened a Word document that was attached to an email message (in my yahoo account) with Word 2007. I did a lot of updates to the document, clicking on the "Save" icon occasionally to make sure I didn't lose the changes, and I worked hours and hours on this document. Not thinking, when I was done, I clicked on the "x" in the upper right hand corner of Word to close the document. I thought the document was saved on my desktop, but it was not anywhere! I also looked for it with the search companion, specifying the date I last modified it and putting the temporary word file extensions like *.TMP and ~*.*, but it did not help. I'm really computer illiterate but I'm trying my best, looking at all the forums, but no way!
Another thing is that Im working on a shared computer in my school, and I cannot access to everyfile, cant download any program, etc. I wanted help from our network administrator, he said he could not find, but I want to force every way bcs maybe he did not have much time to look for it. I would appreciate so much any ideas how I can find my document with the changes? The computer has windows XP professional version 5.1 (service pack 3, it says)

First thing learn to do a "Save As" and save it where you know where it is, on any file when editing a attachment to emails.
It will save you a lot of grief..
Since you are using yahoo email I think you can kiss this file good by. As far as I know all internet mail attachments get cleared when closing out the file.
