I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Other hotkeys work normally, both brightness up/down keys stopped working (did not update or make changes)

Hi I was wondering if there was a way to bind a key to increase/decrease brightness of my laptop screen.

I can use the regular FN+Fnkey combo but I am using an external USB keyboard so it would be easier to use a non FN key combo.
I tried reading the scan codes of the FN+F6 key but I couldn't get any, so I can't remap it with a tool like AutoHotkey.

Also, since I have the slider thing in Control Panel > Power Options, this seems doable with a software.

Last note. I do not want a 'screen dimmer' program that does not actually dim the LEDs behind the screen.

Thanks for your input!

I shut down my laptops once every week; they're either in sleep mode or hybernating. My P50 is currenly running Windows 7 Pro with all the drivers installed. I have changed bios settings such that the function keys behave as function keys and only act as media keys (or whatever they're called) when pressed in combination with the Fn key. All hotkeys work as they are intended to.However, resuming from hybernation causes only the reduce brightness key (Fn + F5) to stop performing although all other hotkeys work as they should. Pressing the F5 key by itself works normally; its just the Fn + F5 combination that doesn't work.Anyone experiencing this ?

I bought this laptop used with Vista on it and the LCD brightness control wont work. The Brihtness is set at default level which is tolerable but non the less i cannot adjust it brighter or less. I reinstalled Vista and installed XP media center edition and still cannot get the brightness to adjust. I have installed all of the toshiba drivers for this notebook including the recent ACPI bios and hotkey application. I am currently on XP MCE.
If anyone has any ideas to what could be wrong i would glady appreciate it. I have been at this for a few days now and no answers not even from the Toshiba site.

A:Brightness Control Hotkey No Working On Toshiba P105

I assume this is the "push the Fn button and another key" thingie? If so, check to ensure that the Fn key works by pressing it and one of the other functions to see if that works.

Then test the key that you use to adjust brightness - without using the Fn key. Does that key also perform it's designated function?

This'll let you determine if it's an error with the keyboard.

A:Satellite S5200-903 Hotkey Function (Fn+F7/F6) Monitor Brightness

For this old notebook models the whole thing works a little bit different as on new models. Now you have one package that contains all necessary stuff for FN functionality.
On old notebooks like your Satellite 5200 you must install several different tools to get this FN functionality, not brightness control only.

So, to make all this easier I recommend you to check Installation instructions for Satellite 5200 and install all missing stuff. Please follow the installation order.

If you still need help let us know.

Toshiba Satellite T130- 16w, Windows 7

Several months ago i deleted some of the factory bloatware on my laptop because of slowdown. Though i checked everything was unnecessary before deleting it, i think i might've made a mistake. Since then i've only used mobile internet. Today I came to turn the wireless on the function+F8 key no longer does anything. The little wireless/bluetooth menu does not appear. Wireless is currently off and I can't get it on.

Wireless is turned on in the BIOS. In the device manager it appears as working and enabled. The computer is in every way set up to use it, I just can't get the key to do anything so i can't turn it on. Weirdly, I can turn bluetooth on and off separately, just not wireless.

I've updated the driver for the wireless but the hotkey driver isn't anywhere on the site. I've tried searching it elsewhere but couldn't find it for windows 7. Can I use the XP one, or one from a different Toshiba model? The T130 section just returns no results.

Does it sound like the hotkey is the issue? Does anyone know where I'd find the driver? Is there any way to turn the wireless on without using the function key (there's no switch)? Like through windows? I've been trying to sort it out for 4 hours and gotten nowhere.

Thanks for reading.

Win 7 requires the Toshiba VAP (value added package) installation to get the FN buttons working.
Visit the Toshiba EU driver page and there you can find the VAP for Win 7 64bit

If you need the VAP for Win 7 32bit, choose another notebook series and use the VAP released for another notebooks.
The VAP does not depend on notebook series.

All drivers are installed and up to date, but the USB 2.0 charging (powered) port would not send/receive data, although it used to function properly. Now it can only charge the devices. It could be a hardware issue. But perhaps there are some unknown to me USB drivers for this model. I will be grateful for guidance.

I would first ensure that you have installed the drivers for the motherboard chipsets.

Also go into the BIOS and see if there is an option to enable USB.

Hello all,

One day keyboards stopped functioning and it hasn't worked since. The problem is on a home built desktop computer and any and all types of keyboards. I've sat on this problem for a while since I also have a laptop and have used that for activities that require extensive typing and I can still use the onscreen keyboard to use the desktop. I wish I'd done a system restore when the problem was still fresh but I didn't think of that immediately, and it's been several months now since it started.

Keyboards work fine in BIOS, but not in safe mode. All attempts at updating or reinstalling drivers have not resolved the issues.

My last resort will be to reinstall Windows but I want to find an alternative fix before going there.

Using Home Edition 64 bit...

I changed the indexing on a file type from File Properties to File Properties and Text (I think)

It said rebuilding could take a while

However - Indexing has 'stopped' running (according to Process Explorer and Task Manager)

Services says it is running - tried stop, start and restart, also tried reboot

The Control Panel Indexing Options reports Indexing is not running, included locations are empty and the Modify button is grey

In advanced the only thing that's 'alive' is the Rebuild button - but the location is empty and the Select New button is grey

Tried this fixit Fix Windows Desktop Search when it crashes or not showing results It told me it found three problems but didn't say what they were

Ran sfc /scannow - says it found no problems

TIA pjd

Have you done any tweaking or used an Optimizer or Registry cleaner on Win7? It doesn't need any of that since it's already the most lightweight OS ever, and it can cause problems like this.

Try to System Restore to before this occurred.

Check the WIndows Search Service and Remote Procedural Call service to see if they are also running.

If this won't resolve it and someone else doesn't have something to try then I'd probably run a Repair Install.

However if you have other corruption issues or less than perfect performance I'd take the time to get a perfect Clean Reinstall using the tools and methods listed which work best for Win7.

What's going on?!

Okay the other day I was using the mouse in which case it was fine. I used it again and it didn't work. I figured I had a virus or something like that, too many processes going or something. I googled it and came across a few things which I tried to no success. I turned my PC on again and it worked once. Every other time that I've tried to get the mouse to work it hasn't.

It's a ps/2 mouse on an advent 3511 2.80ghz.
intel pentium 4 processor
512mb ddr
geforce 4 mx440 128mb ddr/tv-out

I can do a HJT log and scan but can someone reassure me that they'll help me first?

Plus what else could it be?

I phoned the pcservicecall phone number and some dude said it sounds to him that the mouse was 'on its way' out but I'm puzzled. What if I buy a brand new mouse and find that it doesn't work?

Oh dear, I'm worried someone help please.

PS. I keep going to move it instinctively lol.

Hey guys

Last night i was around my computer and i noticed a burning smell , i got up and went to my pc and i smelt something burning. I looked down and noticed that the mouse and keyboard stopped functioning. My assumption was that the usb ports have gone. So i tried plugging the mouse and keyboard into another set of usb ports on my computer. They worked for about an hour before the same thing happend. I noticed the smell again and the mouse and keyboard all of sudden again stopped functioning. So i put them in my last 2 usb ports i had. And today, i noticed a big spark come out of the usb port and the mouse again didnt work.

I have never gone thru a situation like this. Has someone gone thru any situation like this before?

Any help would be appreciated.

A:USB ports have stopped functioning

Considering that the keyboard and the mouse were the only common components, it is very likely that you deliberately destroyed all your USB ports with a faulty keyboard or a mouse.

Read the last anecdote on this page and think about it: http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/cs_drives.shtml

You can buy a PCI or a PCI-Express add-on USB controller to get some USB ports back. Please try another mouse and a keyboard this time

Hi there,

A couple of months ago my CD/DVD-RW drive stopped working (it works physically, but when I enter a CD, the software will not read it, and the corresponding drive in the My Computer screen disappeared). However, since I found out it stopped working I've been too lazy to try and fix the problem. Today, however, I made some attempts to retrieve it. First off, I opened my case [I handpicked the hardware ingredients some years ago and had it assembled for me] and tried to figure out if any cables were disconnected from the device. I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but I think the drive was still connected properly.

Next up, I checked out my BIOS. It said something about a ROM station being disabled, but enabling that did not help. At the booting options, however, I found the option "IDE:TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-202J", which (I'm guessing) must be the drive, so my software recognizes the device [right?]. Not finding anything else, I just checked off "Return all values to default", but that did not retrieve the device either.

Finally, I tried switching some devices of/on and using the "Search for changed apparatus" function in the screen (I don't know what it's called in English) included in the attachment. In this application, I tried using the CD/DVD-stations as well as the IDE section, since in the BIOS the device was identified with the IDE tag.

Long story short, I still have no idea how to retrieve... Read more

Hi all!

Hope this is the correct Forum discussion area as all my spell checkers either stopped working....or my memory of them/what they once did has stopped!

No spell checker... I seem to remember I had one there else I really really do spell wrong (or take long times like this document two days to slowly go over each word with ... yes ... I broke the emergency door on the wall and took out the paperback dictionary!)

I know what to do to solve this I thought! I type first in Word Pad or Note Pad and then copy and past over to my Email when its all spell checked...but....
I tried Word Pad, No suggestions for misspelled words no help no nothing. Same for NotePad.

Did they ever have spell checking?

Booted up my desktop (Vista x64) machine this morning and things seemed fine. Loaded WoW, logged onto server, got a UI error, exited WoW. Started WoW again, went to log in, machine hung. It used to identify my WRT54G just fine. I also have a wireless PCI card in my desktop, I enabled it and sent up my wireless network (WPA2/non broadcasting) and I can see the network but windows complains that it can't connect. I'm pretty much when it comes to these stuffs.. so here it goes..

In terms of events:

Tried opening skype -> at first no probs

skype upgraded -> again no probs
after its loaded -> my speakers went whoosh with the skype starting up sound & stopped playing any sound suddenly..

I had a doubt whether any virus or anything was wrong, so I ran malware bytes & sfc /scannow .. had no issues popup in either of them.

Rebooted system after these scans & sound is not yet back
Just wanted to double check if at least headphones were working, a big relief ! They do
Just in case if it matters.. when I tried looking in Devices troubleshoot, it had only Base System Device doesn't have an driver!

then tried Microsoft Fix Troubleshooters:

no prob detected in either of them.

What should I do next ? I tried googling & was scared to test different methods listed around, I didn't want to break anything around. I didn't want to uninstall the sound device, as I feared, what would happen if it doesn't & even my headphones stop functioning now

And will there be any probs if I continue using headphones with speaker not functioning ?

IE8 has stopped working because of the newly introduced pressence of a "portable" version of IE7. After unraring it, put the "Portable Internet Explorer v7.0.exe" fileinto a folder named, for example, "C:\Portable Software" and put a shortcut to it on your desktop. 3. If you are using Windows 7, then right-click on the desktop icon, and select "Troubleshoot compatibility." 4. Click "Try recommended settings." 5. Click "Start the program..." 6. Click "Yes." I'm not using Windows 7 - I'm using Vista. And I found I needed to select "run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP" under the PROPERTIES section of the "Portable Internet Explorer v7.0.exe" icon. Then everything worked great, the synchronized text I wanted, everything was great. Then can the problem. HP Pavilion
Windows XP
Browser: Mozilla Firefox (latest version)
Network Adapter: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN
NOTE: No changes have been made to my hardware since purchase.

Yesterday my laptop decided to quit connecting wirelessly to the internet. I can still connect via the ethernet cord in the modem, but when I booted it up yesterday, a bubble popped up on the Quicklaunch bar stating that the WLAN is disconnected. Clicking on it brings up the HP Wireless Assistant window. It displays the Wireless LAN status as "Disabled".
I did the following:

1) Tried clicking "repair this connection". After trying it displayed "unable to connect to the network". Well duh...
2) Went into Device Manager and checked the Network Adapter. It shows as "Enabled".

From here I'm lost. Is there another way to manage the wireless program that I'm not finding?
Thanks ahead for any input.

A:Wireless Lan On Hp Pavilion Stopped Functioning

Which HP Pavillion do you have?

I use vista, but with the wireless assistant, make sure to check that the "status" is "on". Seems like a stupid answer, but is often overlooked.

Another thing that is easy to miss is the light (blue for on) that lets you know if you are connected. This is an easy one to miss. The first thing I do is to either unplug my router for about 20 mins or so, or just pressing the reset button. My router must have 4 blue lights showing.

When in doubt - un-plug. Reboot. Plug-in.

I hope that this may have helped you in some way.

I've bought a Yoga 300-IBR to work with while I am at the university. After just 9 days of use i noticed that my laptop became a lot slower, even the simpliest tasks could cause major lags. I started looking for the source of my problem and I found out that only 2 GB of RAM were available. This laptop has 4 GB from the factory, which are just enough to run Windows 10 and to have some basic multitasking capabilities. Standard hardware-scanning software from Lenovo didn't recognize any problems except that only 1 RAM stick was still working. I'm highly concerned of the laptop's quality since I have treated it like a treasure ( no disassembling, no overheating, no moisture whatsoever, always kept clean and polished  ) and I'm wondering what are my options. What should I do with it now? Try to open it up and check whether some bad quality soldering could be the issue and possibly repair it? Or should I send it in for a warranty repair which will take more time? Or should I contact the online shop, where I've bought this particular laptop? Please, give me some advices.

I have a Qosmio F750-11T. Four days ago I started up my laptop and found out my num lock stopped functioning. The led always lights up, but the buttons do not respond. I can't put the num lock off or on and I can 't produce any numbers anymore with it (nor use the pgup, pgdn buttons when it should be off).

I read some stuff on the (.com) forum and updated the BIOS to the latest version, rebooted it, but nothing helps.

I bought the laptop just 3 months ago. I would appreciate if somebody could help me out with this.

Thank you!

So, I was just going to continue organizing sprites in a PNG file, when I noticed that the transparent selection has stopped functioning. It worked just fine yesterday, but now I can't just make it work. I have selected the "transparent selection" in the selection tool menu, and both colours are selected as RGB 000 black (colour of the background) with the pick colour tool, but it just doesn't work anymore.

The touch screen on my  ProOne 400 stopped working.  It was working fine when the machine was running windows 8.1, and was working when i initially upgraded to Windows 10.  But has since stopped.   I have updated the BIOS,  Removed installed components through windows management and it still is not functioning.  I tried the trouble shooting steps provided to me through the HP support assistant but that did not rectifiy the problem.  If i perform a clean restore (which i really dont want to do again) the touch screen works, but will eventually stop working.

I have NAV2000 over which I installed a 30day trial version of NAV2001. I ran liveupdate after NAV2001 installation and was able to download the virus definitions, but after that liveupdate aborted. Since then whenever I try liveupdate the following error appears-

"Liveupdate could not create a temporary directory

Liveupdate could not create a directory to store temporary files.
Make sure you have create and write access to the windows 95\98 All users directory or the windows NT0 profiles directory."

I tried reinstalling NAV2001 with no result. I uninstalled NAV2001 and reinstalled my licenced copy of NAV2000 still the same problem occurs. There was no problem with NAV2000 earlier. I checked the C:\windows\allusers directory but to my knowledge there is no access block to the folder. There is no other problem with the antivirus software. My system details are-
PIII 600MHz, 64MB Ram, 10Gb HDD, win98se(OS)

Can anybody throw some light on this?
Thanx in anticipation.

PS: I downloaded the latest version of liveupdate and tried installing it. But installation aborts saying that error 9 occured.(Whatever it means)

A:(Resolved) NAV2001 liveupdate suddenly stopped functioning.

I would strongly suggest you post this problem on Symantec's (Norton) free Tech Support board. Then one of Symantec's techs will help you fix it.
Go to that link and put in your product. On the next page click on 'Contact Options' and then on the next page click on "contact a technician for.....continue to free ask Symantec online" and then post your question on the board there.

Good Luck!

I got a virus on my computer and it is doing some good damage. I can't login to your website or any site where you can download antispyware from my PC. My CDROM stopped functioning a couple weeks after I got the virus and so did my ethernet plug in. I purchased an antispyware program, but since my CDROM doesn't work I cannot get it up and running.

I ran a hijack this a while ago and here is a copy of the log.

Bought this computer at the first week of August.  Set it up and used it for 3 weeks.  Enjoyed the flexibility of the convertible funtion and regularly used the touch and active stylus features.   Then the touch screen and stylus functions stopped working. After multiple attempts to reactivate the features (i.e., restart, new pen battery, software updates) I contacted HP support.  My assumption was that the hardware was bad, the screen had failed in some way, because the software didn't even recongize the touch ability any more.  HP support ran me through the standard solutions, so again restart, etc.  Then they wanted to reset Windows, revert back to the shipped version of the software, erasing all my files, apps, and software that I had migrated from my old computer.  That computer had been recycled at this point.  So I would be left to start over.  My feel was that it was a hardware issue, so why go through the pain of having to reset up the machine.  After some coaxing by the rep, I relented and reset windows.  No help.  The software still could not recognize touch or pen functionality.  Next step was to send the machine in for repair.  They told me it would take 14 days.  That seemed like a long time to go without a computer.  I asked for a replacement machine.  The computer was only 3 weeks old.  They refused.  And no compensation was offered for my lost time. N...
