Lenovo T420 Random BSOD Occuring

Q: Lenovo T420 Random BSOD Occuring

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Preferred Solution: Lenovo T420 Random BSOD Occuring

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Hi have had this problem with the laptop since i got it. Have tried updating all drivers and the system bios, which has seemed to reduce the frequency of the freeze and shutdown, and searched for solutions on the net but I seem to be going round in circles. Please assist me in finding out what the problem is and how i could fix it. I have attached the necessary files.

Your most recent .dmp files were from October. Make sure you have your system enabled for generating dump files. Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD OPTION TWO part 2. will configure them properly. Also, avoid using any disk cleaning software (CCleaner, Windows Disk Cleanup, etc.) after a crash occurs.

Dear all,

I went through the different steps mentioned in "clean-up-factory-bloatware" article, apart from last point which consists of re-installing my machine! But still I have BSOD and it drives me crazy.

I attached the DM Log Collector results. Hope you'll be able to find what causes this.

Thanks for your help

Hi all,

I have been using a SSD drive as my OS drive for the last year or so. During that time I have experienced random BSOD's that appear to occur literally at random. The BSOD's have occured in the midst of games, whilst surfing the web (using Google Chrome) and even when idling overnight (BOINC app running as screensaver)

I have only had 1 or 2 chances to see it happen in front of my eyes but the BSOD screen usually flashes by so quickly that I can't catch the error code. As such, I'd like your assistance in trying to figure out what the heck is going wrong with my computer.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Add-on Information:

Another problem noted is that after the BSOD occurs, the bios is unable to detect and load the OS from the SSD drive. This is resolved by performing a complete shutdown of the system. Any rebooting or Ctrl+Alt+Del will only result in a 'Boot Manager Not Found' error.

A:BSOD occuring at random

Hiyya and welcome Wolfgang I am NO expert mate but if you can remember when those BSOD's occurred run back in the Event Viewer and truck through the events around that time or day it might pop up a reference to it / them.

To get Event Viewer > Start type "event" (without quotation marks) - it should pop up a blue tab at the top of the start list right click then run as administrator.

Click Custom Views > Administrative Events and trawl down the listings.

Sorry should have said any you find double click on that error and it should open up to give the details.

Hi all,

First post on this forum...

I have a fairly new M4500 laptop which I got new from Dell.
I've had random BSOD's occuring and I'm almost convinced it is NIC related but I am unsure how to fix it as I don't think there are newer drivers than what Dell and/or Microsoft provide for it.

It usually always happens when the network card is stressed (Running large SQL queries and surfing at the same time for instance).

The "file" in question that is listed in the BSOD is e1k62x64.sys

Any help on this please?

(PS: I have carried out the bsod reader instructions but there is some information in some of the files I cannot release on here which is why I have not attached it on here)

Thanks in advance

Also: A full format has been carried out 3 times now and reinstall of non-dell image.
Annoyingly, I can go days without it happening but when it does happen, it's always the e1k62x64.sys that causes it.

A:Random BSOD Occuring (NIC Related?)

Actually, this is the exact issue in my case too:
Win7 keeps crashing with a blue screen

Interestingly, I too have connectify installed but not in-use.
I have uninstalled it before in a previous install when I got bsods with the network driver but it continued.

I have been receiving random BSOD errors since building my PC on 08/12/12. They do not seem to be occurring at any specific instances, but rather almost completely randomly. Hi Guys,

I've been experiencing somewhat random BSoD and restarts. Since this new upgrade it seems to have increased somewhat, but have had issues with BS for some time. I DO realize Windows is not infallible, lol, so a BSoD every now and then is no real concern to me, however, when they occur daily, and sometimes multiple times like this morning (4x within a 45 minute span) I begin to get a bit concerned.
I've used "whocrashed" and have had it suspect ntfs.sys 2x, dxgmms1.sys 1x, and ntoskrnl.exe 1x

I know eventually I would figure this out on my own, but it will take me 100x longer than asking for help, seeing as I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to these things.

Please let me know what you need and I'll gladly do my part!

A:[SOLVED] BSOD occuring at random since updates

perfmon reports a USB audio device as being disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why? Please uninstall the device while we're troubleshooting.

There are memory dumps from March, June and July that I didn't evaluate - as there were no memory dumps in August or September (so I assume that they're not significant).

This series of motherboards (Asus P5) has some issues with memory settings in Win7. As such, I'd suggest visiting the memory manufacturer's website and getting the recommended settings/timings/voltages from there - and set them in your BIOS (DO NOT use the Auto setting).

I do not recommend the use of USB wireless devices - instead I recommend using a wireless card that plugs into your motherboard. They are more robust and provide better throughput than the USB devices. They also have less compatibilty issues (which is a definite issue with Win7 systems and Vista drivers). So, please ensure that you have the Win7 drivers installed on your system: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15564

Also, please remove or update these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:

Hey guys, I hope you can help me solve my BSOD's. Hi skirby4 and Welcome to the Forums.

Three of your .dmp files return a stop error 0x124 which is usually hardware related and is probably your main issue.

See Stop 0x124 - what it means and what to try for assistance.

The majority of your .dmp files however, indicate device drivers which will not help your cause.

Uninstall Daemon Tools. The driver it utilises, sptd.sys, is notorious for causing BSOD in Windows 7. Use the correct download for your system to remove sptd.sys. Be sure to click remove!!

PC Tools Internet Security is also known to cause issues with Windows 7. Uninstall and replace with BSOD friendly Microsoft Security Essentials

Question Do you also have Threatfire installed? If so uninstall that as well using the AV Uninstaller listed.

NOTE!! Running two AV products at the same time will cause conflicts!
Outdated drivers can and will cause issues. Update these drivers:

HP printer drivers/software looks to be causing some trouble. That or your super outdated Nvidia chipset drivers (2009). Please go to the Compaq website and see if you can't find any updates for your motherboard/chipset drivers as well as BIOS. In addition, you'll want to update your HP drivers and software as well.

I noticed this is causing commotion because you're using a parallel port to hook up to your printer instead of a USB. Are you not able to hook up via USB? There's nothing entirely wrong with parallel, but it's quickly being phased out of consumer market and there's more and more support for the USB side. If you can switch to USB connection that might be preferable.

Just so you know, this diagnosis is only partial. I cannot ascertain exact cause unless you turn on Driver Verifier, or provide a kernel dump (MEMORY.DMP in Windows directory). If you choose to turn on DV, do not select the following checks: Force Pending I/O Requests, IRP Logging, and Low Resource Sim. Select all other checks. Make sure to restart system after you finish setup. If you experience a boot loop afterwards, go into Safe Mode by pressing F8 prior to Windows logo and disable DV there. Provide us any new crashdumps.

Hi there,

I have an issue where I get BSODs that seem to happen 1-3 times in a day or two, then stops for a bit, just today and yesterday I had 1 BSOD each, previous to that there was a big gap between the previous ones. I should have posted earlier, but I stop seeing the crashes and think the problem is gone... poor judgement. The last 2 times have happened while playing/watching League of Legends games (previous to these times, it had never crashed during LoL though, so that's new). I have also played numerous games without issue before then and after.

Files attached, thank you.

Looks like a bad driver, identity unknown. Use driver verifier to help us determine the cause
Driver Verifier
I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers... Read more

Daemon Tools is known to cause BSODs with Windows, and it is advisable you remove this program. Furhtermore, programs such as TuneUp Utilities do not improve the performance of Windows 7, and can cause crashes and problems with your system.

A recommended alternative for Daemon Tools is:MagicISO
You can also use some of Windows built-in features, which Daemon Tools provided, such as burning .ISO files to a CD/DVD.

Follow these steps -

Memory:RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Run Memtest86+ for least 7-8 passes, and preferably overnight as it can take a while to fully complete.

Test each RAM stick individually, if an error is found then move the same RAM stick into the next DIMM slot and test again, if errors are found for the same RAM stick in every available slot then you have a faulty RAM module. On the other hand, if no errors are found in the next slot or the other slots for the same RAM module, then you have a faulty DIMM slot.

I am new to these forums, but I think I have complied with all posting regulations. Otherwise please smack me into doing so. I have uploaded both the instructed as the stickied BETA zipfile, plus a screenshot of my Blue Screen Viewer.

Without changing anything except a new mouse (without a driver and in between the occurances) BSOD's have started occuring at random. Sometimes they stay away for days, sometimes they happen several times a day. Some give a hard reboot, some make a dump - but they're all freakishly annoying. First real dump showed IRQL error, so checked my drivers for up-to-date-ness, but couldn't find real culprits nor had I changed any drivers. Then the PFN dump showed up and I found:

On 8D: "The page-free list is corrupted. This error code most likely indicates a hardware issue."

I know it's an old machine (8 years) but it's still really working well ... or was. I can't seem to find tooling to check the harddrive (850 Pro SSD) for issues, but chkdsk /f has both run completely once and also restarted mid process once so I'm not comfortable there. Samsung software says good health ... but hey. Below are the attached BSOD analysed files.

BETA TOOL MARCEL_PC_12_10_2015_11_35.zip

I would appreciate any assistance on the matter as I am not quite sure how to proceed!

Kind regards,

Hi Folks,I recently bought a refurbished Lenovo T420 which is a very nice piece of Kit, I am Hard of hearing and mostly use headphones for audio. However, this T420 seems to have something else other than the 3.5mm combo socket in place, on the right corner panel, just before the CD tray. The company I bought it from indicated that it should not be there and they suggested I try to  "Pry it out with a needle"?.Obviously I'm not going to do that untill I know what this is and why its there? I cannot connect normal head phones because there is no 3.5mm socket. Can anyone identify what this is please?3.5mm socket should be here

Hi, I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad T420 from an online auction. It had no hard drive. So I went to the Microsoft Windows 7 download page and typed in the Windows Pro 7 COA and Microsoft responded with that is a pre-installation OS and I need to contact the manufacturer. I installed a new SSD and will need re-install the operating system. So where do I get an installation disk? Does Lenovo provide this? I am stuck with a non-functioning laptop? Regards,Martin

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

Hi, im new to this form but i was hoping someone here could help me with this problem. I am at my wits end with figuring out what is exactly causing these bsods on my system. I have searched through plenty of forms but none have seemed to help, so im coming here to address my problem specifically. These blue screens occur at random times, while on the internet, idling, playing a game, and generally whenever it feels like it. The main blue screens that are occurring are System_Service_Exception and IRQL not less or equal. I will have attached a few dump files. Thank you for any help you can give me.

I would have them uploaded through the fourm interface, but it keeps saying 'invalid file'

Hi Serix and welcome to TSG.

Do you have evidence that your hard drive is damaged or are you just assuming it is ?

Please download and run this TSG hardware utility and paste the result into your next post :- http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe

Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

Hi Zjaz123456,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?
Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.
Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.
Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!
Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

For updating my T420 in Lenovo support website, I installed the Lenovo Service Bridge. However, my security software detected it as a malware and deleted some files. Then every time the laptop starts, there will be a couple of pop-up windows (see lingks below), which is the same when I click the service bridge installation file. So I doubt that the service bridge is running somehow at the backstage. http://i.imgur.com/EBHdq8c.jpg http://i.imgur.com/P7t33ax.jpg When I clicked the detail button, a log file came out. PLATFORM VERSION INFO

The free upgrade to win 10 pro failed several times.  I checked the web for problems and as a result uninstalled malwarebytes, antivirus, some drivers and some Lenovo stuff that popped up.  Finally the upgrade using the Media tool was successful.  Win 10 pro is now working on the T420.  However, only the Lenovo Companion is installed.  I bought a Yoga with Win10 pro and it came with Lenovo Companion, Settings and Account.  I have been trying to find a way on the Lenovo site to download the Settings and Account programs, but no luck.  Any suggestions?  (Probably a simple solution and I am just missing something obvious....)

Hi guys, I just spilled a glass of water on m Lenovo T420 laptop. I immediately turned it off and kept it upside down for a while and haven't turned it on for 8 hours now. Is there something I should do to avoid damage? E.g. how long should I wait and  should I do something to dry it more? Help appreciated! Thanks,Joel

A:Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

Hi Lenoovoo,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.
How to Locate a Repair Center or Service Provider
If you have such skill and tools then you can use the hardware manual here a reference guide.

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.  8 GB RAM,  500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States.  Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems.
