Hidden Desktop Shortcuts' Hotkey not working

Q: Hidden Desktop Shortcuts' Hotkey not working

Last night (about 23 hours ago) I made shortcuts of my most used programs to my desktop. I then designated hotkeys to each shortcut as well as making the shortcuts "Hidden".

Last night, the Hotkeys were working perfectly, but now as I turned on my computer the hotkeys don't seem to work anymore.

Any kind of help is very much appreciated

Preferred Solution: Hidden Desktop Shortcuts' Hotkey not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Hidden Desktop Shortcuts' Hotkey not working

Making shortcuts hidden does not disable key combinations that you assign to them.

Please check whether key combinations are still assigned.
You can use this free program RJL Software - Software - Utility - Shortcut Key Explorer - Download
to check all of them in one place.

Recently I noticed that at least 3 shortcuts disappeared from the desktop (there are about 50). They were not placed each other so I'm not sure why those 3, or when or how! I did not find them in the recycle bin.

I recreated those 3. One of them had a hotkey sequence assigned to it. I cannot re-assign this hotkey sequence. When I press the keys, the window blinks, looses focus, and no error message is displayed. Pressing this hotkey to see if it does something results in nothing apparent happening.

There is another shortcut with a hotkey that did not disappear. That hotkey works just fine.

I want to re-assign the hotkey to the re-created shortcut. Anyone have experience or a good thought about this?

A:Disappeared desktop shortcuts and hotkey issue

It helps if you mention what program you are using to assign hotkeys sequence to certain things.

After searching techguy I can’t find where anyone else has had this problem, so I hope someone can help.

I have a Dell laptop small business model Inspiron 6400, using Windows XP SP3.

I recently bit the bullet and upgraded from IE6 to IE7. (I’m slow to accept new programs.) The only thing I dislike about IE7 (thus far) is the tab browsing, so I turned it off. Unfortunately, when I do this none of my desktop shortcuts will work. They work from my “Favorites” folder, but not from desktop. I tried deleting existing shortcuts and replacing them, but that doesn't help either.

The strange thing with this is if I have Internet Explore open from my “Show On Desktop” icon (not a shortcut), I can open sites from the desktop shortcuts. But when I close IE, desktop shortcuts no longer work. I get a white screen only. I have to “End Task” from Task Manager to close it.

I’ve turned off the add-ons but no help. I’ve turned off Norton, no help.

I’ve searched the internet with not much luck. I found one entry where a person had the exact same problem, but no one gave him an answer. I looked at IE8 and there’s no mention of fixing this problem in that version. Anybody seen this, and does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks to all.

A:IE 7 Desktop Shortcuts Not Working

Ok, folks, I’ve got the fix. Sorry to have bothered anyone. I should have known, but I was too frustrated to think straight. Here’s the fix for anyone on the net that might be having the same problem.

Select “Internet Properties”, either from “Tools” on the tool bar of IE or by right clicking on IE icon. Select “Advanced” tab. Scroll down to “Browsing” and check the box “Reuse windows for launching shortcuts (when tabbed browsing is off)”. (Duh!) Click ok.

If you don’t like the tab browsing feature and want to turn it off and still use your desktop shortcuts, do the above then the following. Under the “General” tab of Internet Properties and under “Tabs” near the bottom of the window, click “Settings”. At the top of the new window uncheck “Enable Tabbed Browsing”, click ok, then ok again and close Internet Explore, and try your desktop shortcuts. It should work now.

I have recently found that my desktop shortcuts no longer work. When I double click I get a list (a very short list) of programs which might be used to open a particular software. It then looks to know if I want to save this program. It can then run it perfectly. One annoying aspect is that I am not able to get accessories within Programs. I use Paint quite a bit and it is now no longer available to me.

A:Non working Desktop Shortcuts

Your links are broken - for whatever reason (maybe the files were moved to another location or partition). You have to recreate the shortcuts which should be fairly easy. Those shortcuts are useless. All you have left are the pictures.
Paint you find in %windir%\system32\mspaint.exe

I've never run into this problem before... I created desktop shortcuts to some URLs like I've done on other computers, but when I try to open the link I get the following error: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

So OK, I go to the FOlder Options control panel and I've been modifying the URL file type associations to have it open by Internet Explorer... I've tried several different methods, i even tried restoring the defaults, but I still get this same error message!! HELP! What could this be? I've never come across this problem before! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest closing down all running applications, and then opening your browser and downloading Process Monitor. Once downloaded to a temporary folder (like C:\TEMP or C:\Users\<username>\Downloads), double-click and launch the procmon.exe to start Process Monitor - note that it will begin logging immediately. Simply double-click any desktop icon, and when it fails, go back to the Process Monitor window and click File > Save. Note the location of the file, and click the "OK" button to save the LogFile.pml file. Compress (with 7zip, winrar, winzip, whichever app you use) and upload the file to a file hosting site for one of us to download and review to see if we can make any determination as to why this might be happening.

There seems to be a simple solution but it beats me.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to open the shortcuts?

For now, you might see if downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed .lnk (LNK) and .exe options in the tutorial below may help. They will restore their default associations and registry entries.

I am new to Windows XP Pro. (Sorry, all you Vista users.) I copied all my desktop shortcuts from a Windows 2000 computer to my new desktop. The shortcuts point to files located on my server and all the drives are mapped. So why are my keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+alt+key) not opening the files any more? In 2000, I was used to being able to run any desktop shortcut by pressing the ctrl+alt combination. Now when I do that, nothing happens. If I go to the desktop and double click the shortcuts, they open immediately. How can I resolve this problem?

A:Desktop Shortcuts Not Working

While I'm not sure about this, you may have to remap all of your shortcuts to make this possible. Try remaking one as an experiment - if it works, then that's the solution for the rest.EDIT: A bit more research seems to indicate that Ctrl - Alt - key isn't a valid Windows shortcut combination. So, I suspect that this was an add-on program on your Windows 2000 PC that isn't installed on your XP PC.

Hi Guys

I'm new to this so please forgive me if this is an easy problem, but my desktop icons have stopped working. I'm on a laptop with XP, and I'm using Firefox as my browser. I may have caused this problem, as I was fed up with the way Firefox hijacks the proper icon from the website I've dragged off the address bar to create the shortcut, and one forum post said that Firefox asks you if you want it to create icons when you first install it so I uninstalled it and re-installed but I didn't make any changes as none were obvious. I've run my Spyware application and AV program to no avail. Now I get an error message as follows..(and this is even after I've made new shortcuts..they still don't work.)

This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel

I've read thru many different answers and no solutions work. I use AVG Virus, ZA Firewall, AD-Aware, and Spybot for protection. These have ALL been updated and used before this thread was begun.

Example is this: Start computer (or reboot) and the "Google" shortcut on desktop will function (doubleclick and website is reached). Come back after using other shortcuts and Google shortcut WILL NOT launch website, even after many doubleclicks... This holds true for 3-4 other shortcuts: "Ask.com", Fantasy Football League page, Hotmail, Webstaff.

Running: Windows XP SP1 & 2

As usual, your help is greatly appreciated.

I've developed a problem where my desktop shortcuts (not all, but most) do not work. Instead they launch an error box that states: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

I have checked and I do have the correct permissions. I can right-click/select properties/find target and open the files fine from there. The shortcuts affected are my destop, and start menu ones. I've tried running system restore back as far as I can, and this hasn't fixed anything as this problem has existed for a little while.

I've searched and read through most results here, with no fix working so far.

A:Solved: Desktop shortcuts not working.

I've have 4 accounts on this XP machine. 2 Administrator, 1 user and 1 guest. The created (not default) administrator account is giving me the problems. In the other accounts, I've tried creating shortcuts to the same programs that are giving me problems and they work fine.

In the account that's giving me problems, I've triple checked and all privileges are correct. I can launch the program by right-clicking the shortcut and selecting properties, then going to find target and launch the actual exe. But even trying to create new shortcuts to some of these programs produces the same result with the same error.

I'm to the point that I'm considering just renaming this account, and then creating a new one with the same settings. I want to know what I'll loose by doing so, what settings I can copy over, etc.

Good day all.

This is a wonderful forum - great work guys keep it up.

I have a problem which suddenly reared its ugly head a few days ago with regards to desktop shortcuts and Start menu shortcuts (or .lnk) not running the associated application.

I have found the Regfix.reg fix for this but everytime I run the fix I get the error in the attached screenshot. I also ran a fix from Symantec called UnHookExec.inf to reset application .exe files to default - this fix can be found here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/445526-reassociating-exe-files.html

How do I overcome this?

I am running Norton360 ver. 2 and the standard Vista security protection.

Any help is appreciated.

I was cleaning up and I deleted a file or folder in error and:

All of my Desktop Shortcuts are not working.
All of my Start button Shortcuts are not working

All Shortcuts are displaying as "********.exe.lnk" (******** = the applications.exe file name)
All Shortcuts are displaying the Notepad icon (Use to be the icon for the Application it was activating)

If I click on any Shortcut all I get is Notepad with some random character and some text strings.

I found all of the programs that use to be activates with the shortcuts and if I click on its .exe file the application starts up and can be used with no problem.

For instance Internet Explorer:
- Shortcut Link displays as Internet Explorer.lnk
- Link has same icon displaying as all other shortcuts
- if I go Program Files>Internet Explorer>iexplorer.exe and click on it Internet Explorer starts up and works

All the programs, shortcuts are suppose to activate, are present and working as expected its just that the shortcuts will not activate them anymore.

I tried to recreate the shortcuts but I get the same result as described above.

Any help as to how I can correct would be appreciated

Hello Albanello, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check to see if the file or folder that you deleted may still be in the Recycle Bin where you can restore it to fix this.

If not, then you could try doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully undo and fix this.

Hope this helps for now,

Hi all,

Can anybody please help me with this one. I see a lot of computers lately with the same type of malware infection. I am able to remove the infection with Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, Hitman Pro and MBAM; however, the changes do not revert back. All computers are either Windows Vista or Windows 7. All of the computers have the following symptoms before and after the clean-up: Black background screen which cannot be changed via Personalize option, hidden desktop and user files, hidden or white quick launch icons, disabled system restore.

Is this a new type of infection? I haven't seen this type of infection before. Is there a good solution guide for removing this malware and reverting back the changes?

A:Malware Signs: Black Background - Hidden Desktop Icons - Hidden User Files

I had this infection yesterday. I used the procedure for "Windows XP Recovery" removal, which first requires the use of a program called rkill, before using Malwarer Bytes. This sounds exactly like what happened to me. Look on this site for Windows XP Recovery removal for the link to rkill and this will probably work for you.

I am a new member to the forum and I don't have much experience in writing to forums but well, here it goes.

I am having trouble with creating shortcuts on my desktop by using the Create Shortcut Wizard (i.e. Right-click on Desktop or folder and selecting New->Shortcut). The wizard pops-up and I follow the steps on screen to create a shortcut.

However, if I am making a shortcut to IE by locating the file in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe, my shortcut appears hidden on the Desktop or the folder I have created it in. If I am making any other shortcut (such as Adobe Reader for example), I have no problem and, I can see the newly created shortcut (i.e. it is not hidden).

To see my iexplorer.exe shortcut, I have to show all hidden files first in the Folder menu, in Windows Explorer\View. Even disabling the "Hide protected operating system files" does not work. Only the show all hidden files option works.

I believe this might have been an effect left over by a virus/Trojan. I had recently (in May 2011) removed several viruses from my computer, using the McAffee AntiVirus Plus software. I have also run MalwareBytes to be sure I have no Trojans on my PC, and I didn't. In addition, I have run some of the Microsoft Fix It applications to fix my IE security problems and remove broken shortcuts. I hoped that would fix the hidden shortcut issue, but it was in vain.

I have also searched in Google and Bing for this kind of problem but it appear... Read more

A:Create Shortcut Wizard creates hidden shortcuts

Hi there, welcome to Seven Forums!

Well, first of all, download and install CCleaner Redirecting.... Run the program, and before hitting the button Run Cleaner, make sure you tick 'Start Menu Shortcuts' and 'Desktop Shortcuts' under 'System', then hit Run Cleaner. This will delete all invalid shortcuts.

To make a shortcut, you don't need the wizard, takes more time. If you want to make a shortcut of an .exe or file or whatever, right-click the file you want to make a shortcut of and select 'Copy'. Then go to where you want the shortcut to be placed (Desktop for example), right-click and select 'Paste Shortcut'. There you go, the shortcut .

If you still think this could be due to malware, run a Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper scan Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper Beta | Microsoft Connect. This runs in a bootable Windows PE environment, not Windows, so it can catch tougher threats.

Is there a hotkey that does that already, or does anyone have a idea/solution where a shortcut with that functionality can be created?

I know about right-clicking the Desktop | Properties |Arrange Icons By | Show Desktop Icons. But I do this so many times during the day that I would like a hotkey for this. Preferably one key, not a key sequence.

Do you know of a way to do what I want?

(firstly i wasnt too sure where to put this post, so if a moderators reading this - feel free to move it.)

Okay so ive just got a Logitech Cordless Desktop EX110, and the keyboard (like most moderately priced keyboards) has numerous 'hot-keys' (like music controls, email button, internet button, calc button etc.)

On the side of my keyboard is two hot keys, a 'back' button and a 'close window' button. Now in the Logitech SetPoint software it is possible to customize this buttons function. So i want to make it a 'show desktop' button.

Here's the problem, the SetPoint software is a bit restricted and gives me these (function) choices:
Default Task (in this case, close window)
Open Web Page
Launch Program
Open File
Open Folder
Show Custom Menu
Keystroke Assignment
Do Nothing
So, first of all i tried Keystroke Assignment. Well that would work, just there is only one keyboard short cut i know to show desktop (windows key & D). But this program only takes short cuts that use alpha-numeric keys, Alt or CTRL keys (or in comination, like CTRL+ALT+R) - not the windows key.

So heres my first question: Are there any OTHER keyboard shortcuts to show the desktop? Can i make a new keyboard shortcut?

But before i started asking that question i thought well ill try 'Open Program'. Found on the Microsoft website the script for Show Dekstop.scf, got that all ready. Targeted the file in SetPoint, no it doesnt work - SetPoint's 'Open Program' only works with executables (exe).

Hello Dan,

You could download or create the "Show Desktop" shortcut from the link below, then save it somewhere and assign the keyboard hot-key button to open it when pressed.

Hope this helps,

I know about right-clicking the Desktop > View > Show Desktop Icons.

But now I am looking for a HOTKEY to simply hide or show the desktop icons.

I found some instructions on google that seem to work for windows xp but they don't work for me on windows 7.

Do you know of a way to accomplish what I want?

I just bought HP 250 G5 with Windows 10.Hotkeys (Fn) don't work and I can't find any drivers that can fix this. What do I need to do to make them work? (So far I checked BIOS and they are enabled there) Thanks

Hi: The only suggestion I can offer would be to install the HP System Event Utility from your notebook's support page. This package contains the HP System Event Utility, which enables special function keys on supported notebook models to be programmed. For example, HP System Event Utility enables users to press the Fn+ESC keys to view system information. This package is provided for supported models running a supported operating system. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76001-76500/sp76383.exe

Hi there

I'm a user of Gadwin Printscreen which I have been using for years, I have been using it all week normally i just start the program, hit PrtScn key and it brings up a dialogue allowing me to take snapshots but this time it didn't.

I have tried installing a later version the hotkey does not work on this either, so I put on an earlier image (made last week) I had and the hotkey worked fine, ran windows update, and it stopped working.

Is there any way I can check which program is using which hotkeys ?

Hello We have just started to put our own image on the Revolve 810 G2 laptop and after installing the hp hotkey drivers have noticed that some of the hotkeys are not working. The keys that are not working are: fn + F1fn + F2fn + F8fn + F9fn + F10 Is there other hp software/drivers that should be installed to make these work? Thanks

I must have set a windows system hotkey?

I have f/8 set as a photoshop hotkey...recently when I hit f/8 it caused a semi transparent deep blue screen with two large gear graphics in the center to pop up over my screen.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how I set that.

I do have a macro program, MacroExpress running, but it does not have any setting in it for f/8.

I thought it might have come from windows media player (I'm running version 11) but I cannot find any setting of f/8 in the WMP menus.

anyone have a guess how I set this? and how to turn it off?

When you hit F8 in Photoshop, what have you set it up to do?

For the life of me, I couldn't imagine how you set that up. When did this start occuring (or at least, when did you first notice this)?

Does anyone know how to go one step further and create a desktop shortcut (or hotkey) to the speaker setup page where you choose your audio channels? (ie/ where you choose between Stereo, 5.1 Surround, 7.1 Surround, etc.) It's one click after getting to the Playback page. After getting to the Playback page, you'd click "Configure" to get there. It's this page here:

I need to switch quickly between "Stereo" and "5.1 Surround" and I'd like to get here with a single click (or hotkey). Does anyone know?

A:How to create a desktop shortcut (or hotkey) to speaker setup page?

Hi Outlier

You can usually drag the item name onto the desktop with a right click.

1 Click on the globe bottom left of taskbar

2 Type the word speakers or whatever into the search box

3 When the list of items appear, Right Click on the one you want and drag it onto the desktop

4 Click create shortcut here.

You can create most shortcuts this way, for instance you can open windows explorer to view your favourite folder, make the explorer window a bit smaller so that there is some desktop showing, right click on the folder, drag it onto the desktop, select create shortcut here from the dropdown and you will then have a shortcut to your folder.

Hope this was useful

I have a g80 touch. My son was messing with it and got a blue screen from Windows. I can not gain access to the restore with out the blue screen reseting the computer. I have tried the one Key restore and it just loads back to the main screen after doing a chkdsk. I am out of warranty and I have had this computer worked on by Lenovo longer then I have had use of it. I am very disappointed in Lenovo for the way I was treated. All that aside, is there anything I can do to restore back to factory settings? I've tried everything I know to do. I am a former Dell technician and I am very familiar with computers but this Lenovo is just not doing anything. It's been replaced once and sent into the factory 7 times for repair and now they refuse to give me any help because it's out of warranty. It went down 1 day after the warranty expired. I am at a loss and thinking of just buying another from Dell. Please if anyone has an idea on how to get this junker to restore please let me know.
