I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Can't rename copy move open files

Lol. That's some nice illegal-sounding file names you have there.

As long as this is 'any old random file' and perfectly legal, then it seems some program has locked your files. Try a restart.

Regarding 'not found' error: the files may be split up, Find the .mkv file and put it in same place.

First off, I DO have this on another thread, but I just realised the last post on that thread before mine was 6mnths old, so my apologies for the double posting... well, here goes...

O.k, I'm having a prob moving some video files, 3pg mostly, but a couple of avi's aswell... most of them are in my videos folder, but a couple are on an external harddrive..

so far, I've tried for viruses, none found, malware, couple found and removed, I've tried taking ownership, reg fixes, renaming containing folder, changing attributes, renaming etc etc etc.. and I just keep coming up with the same message everytime I try to move the files (or rename the files themselves)

From: Videos (C:\Users\Pajo\Videos)
To: Personal, Phone Etc (C:\....\personal, Phone, Etc)
Time Remaining: Calculating....
Items Remaining: 1 (1.06 MB)
Speed: 0 bytes/sec

This has been going on about a week or two now, and I'm starting to go demented.. if anyone can help, I'll will be forever grateful.

**I've now also tried a system restore**
***Just tried MoveOnBoot***

I'm really losing the plot here

Hello there
When I download AVIs and other movie files and try to rename them or movie them to different directories, I sometimes get the message that I can't do this because it's being used by another program, so to close any programs that may be using it and try agian. Most of the time it works if I just leave it alone for a while and try again, but there are a few files that I can't move or rename no matter how many times I try. I know they're not corrupt, because I can play them, I just can't move them. When it gives me this message, there aren't any programs that could be using the files, but I close everything anyway, even all the processes in the windows task manager that aren't necessary, and it still says a program is using it. I don't think it's spyware-related either, 'cause I just ran Spybot again and nothing came up. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks so much! Have a lovely weekend!

When moving or renaming files I frequently get an error messages informing me that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This typically happens with the second or third folder I try to rename or move. Navigating away to another folder and then coming back or closing explorer and reopening it usually helps but on the second rename or move I'm back to square one. I've been reading and searching on the forum and this is what I have tried so far:

stop the windows media player network sharing service
pause indexing
temporarily disable antivirus software
used the system file checker to check integrity

all to no avail. This is without a doubt the most annoying "bug" I have run into so far as it makes it virtually impossible to get anything done or organised. Has anyone found a real solution to this problem that does not involve manually unlocking every single folder before working with it (using 3rd party software - another option I have tried. Works but slows you down a lot)?

Hi linmix, welcome to 7F!

This may seem counter-intuitive, but, go to Control Panel >Folder Options >View Tab, and make sure the first box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not checked or ticked.

Restart your machine.
Try to replicate the problem.

See if that helps.

The problem is that the H; Drive (DVD) is the link to the music file map now, I cant change the the link back to standard. it says that the under file can not be made, Vista is looking at the H; DVD Drive.

The Music files are F drive. How do I get the the Music file map to look at F drive and not H (drive DVD)?

How do I make the missing under maps for Music files, and how do I cut the connection to the H Drive (DVD)?

Hello Kenzoo,

You need to change the drives back to their original names. When things are copied or installed, they depend on the drive name. If you change it, then that can mess them up.

Hello guys,

I've read this forum so many times and I'm usually good at finding solutions on the web by browsing forums and articles but now ...can't fix this I hope someone will be able to help me

I have a acer aspire 7750G-6634 laptop, 8gb of ram, 2 HDs, i5, windows 7 home (the one that came with the laptop)

Here's how things started.

Camtasia created a 50+ gb file on my D drive, I struggled to get the file to work but it seems like it was corrupted (couldn't use it) so I deleted it. Since then I started seeing the green ribbon of death when I was browsing folders on my D. It was always getting worse and worse, until one day I couldn't move/copy/delete any files that was on my D. Then I rebooted and my D drive disappeared :s

I was able to remove it, 30 minutes in the freezer, then I was able to connect it and save some files (maybe 75% of the files), then can't access it anymore.

I bought a new HD from newegg (Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive - OEM) and put the new one to replace the one that died.

So far so good, but now I see that green ribbon again, but only on my D and only in my "Downloads" folder, the other folders on the D seems to be fine. I can't delete or modify any files in the Download folder.

I'm scared this HD will die as well, I don't want to buy another one again.

Do you know what can be causing that? Can it be a corrupted file? If yes, how can I find it?... Read more

I am unable to delete, rename or move any files on my computer or on an external drive with windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I have checked for anti-virus and malware and found nothing. I can shred files okay. But nothing goes to the recycle bin with regular delete. In downloads I can rename a file but it does not change and it goes back to same name. Recycle bin still has storage available.

I do not want to do a restore because I have had this problem for a long time and I would lose too many applications. Running Windows 8.1 pro on a desktop pc. AMD FX 4300 Quad Core Processor, 3.8Ghz,16GB.

I've run into a problem deleting, moving or copying files/folders that have been copied from the C drive to thumbdrives. I get one of two messages depending upon what I'm trying to do. If deleting, the action cannot be completed because the file is open in Windows Explorer. If moving or copying, the action cannot be completed because the file/folder is open in another program.

These files are not open in anything but Windows Explorer.

Not all file types are affected. I think I've isolated the problem to embroidery designs. The designs were created in Husqvarna Viking 6D Embroidery or in Floriani Total Control Professional.

I've tried opening both programs as administrator and saving files. This seems to make no difference.

Suggestions, please?

Just one laptop on my domained network cannot rename or move networked files or folders. It can create new networked folders and files - either in explorer or within a program such as Word and it can save changes to new and existing files, but it has a fit if you try to move or rename files. It just says that the mapped drive doesn't exist and do you want to create it. Even if you just browse to a file on the network it just says the network path doesn't exist. It is a Vista Business edition laptop, connecting to a SBS2003 Domained network. It's not the user accounts - the same users can log onto another PC and everything works correctly, plus I can log on to the problem machine as an Administrator and get the same problem. The Client Computer setup for that PC on the server is identical to all the others, so I can't think that it is a SBS problem - it must be the PC, but I'm drawing a blank as to what. We have a number of other Vista laptops all working fine, although they are all slightly different models, so there isn't a direct comparison.

Hello everyone!

I seem to have gotten some sort of a virus that is preventing me from deleting, renaming, or moving any files and folders. Whenever I attempt to, for example delete, after a few seconds an error message appears that says "Cannot delete: Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." The disk is nowhere near being full (in fact, I can't delete/rename/move when I put in my USB Drive either). It is also not write-protected and the files aren't currently.

I'm running on Windows XP. I've downloaded "Unlocker" but it says no locking device is found, although it does allow me to delete, and rename and move after restarting the computer. Avast antivirus does not find any infection. I had malware bytes but was unable to update it. I tried to reinstall it and that ended up deleting my old version and not letting me install the new one. This is because it says that files couldn't be renamed.

Not too great with computers, so any help would be great. Is it safe to try downloading Malware Bytes in Safe Mode with Networking?

Hello
I have had this problem for a while now, and it has really started to wind me up lately.
I have read many threads and tutorials, and tried some out aswell, but nothing has worked unfortunately.
Whenever I try to move or delete a file, the box comes up:

But then once that pops up nothing else happens, and it just freezes. I have tried leaving it for a while and seeing if it just takes time but also nothing happened. Even if I click cancel, it freezes.

To close the window, I have to go into the task manager and close it from there, which restarts Windows Explorer.

When renaming a file or folder, I can type the name I want in, but once I press enter Windows Explorer freezes and I have to go into task manager again.

I know I might be one of millions to post about this problem, but I have tried my hardest and still cannot find a solution.

I have even tried two tutorials posted by an admin:

Cannot Rename or Move a File or Folder in Vista Fix
and
New Folder
but they did not work either.

If you think you have a solution, please tell me, as I am willing to try anything.

PS. If you need to know anything about my system just ask.

Thanks

I decided to try some themes and the one I installed I didn't really like it so I decided to go an uninstall it. I restored my backup explorer.exe but then delete the one from the theme but it wouldn't let me. It didn't give me any errors. It showed the screen with the progress bar of it being deleted but after that it was still there.

I decided to try shell32.dll. I wasn't able to delete the themed shell32.dll because it was in use but I was able to rename it. After renaming it I went to rename my backed up shell32.dll to its original name but it wouldn't let me. I decided to rename the themed shell32.dll back to its original name so I have a shell32.dll but it wouldn't let me do that either.

Now I don't have a shell32.dll. Well I do but not in the correct name. Can anyone help me with renaming this file?

A:Won't let me rename or copy files

Hello Daniel,

You ran into the "in use" issue.

If you like, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you used the themes to undo it.

You should also be able to run a sfc /scannow command to repair your system files since SFC will replace these modified files with the default ones.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have a large collection of car photos spanning several years and growing, +300,000. I am now trying to combine them by year of make. There are many files with the same name like "1930 CarMakerName." I cannot take the time to review every conflict at transfer time, much quicker and easier to see them in an Icon view.
Is there any way to have them automatically renamed like every other previous version of Windows that I have used?

A:Copy files to a folder, how to rename to name(2) like in 7

When there are files names conflicting, click on let me decide for each file. It will show all the files like this :

To get all files renamed check both folders at the top and it will rename them automatically like you want. It is slower than the old system though, more clicks involved.

If you really miss the old explorer features, you could try PerigeeCopy, it brings back the old way of copying/moving files to Windows 8. It's free (open-source). And here is a review/guide about it : Queue copy and move operations in Windows with PerigeeCopy | Winaero

Or you could try an Image Organizer, they are usually designed just for this task, and usually give much more options than the simple File Explorer. I haven't used ACDSee in years, but back then it was very good at this sort of thing. I prefer IrfanView, it's free and has some amazing batch capabilities, it can automatize crop/resize/convert/and much more on multiple images just in a few clicks.

Here is a pic of Irfanview's batch window :
and here is one of the Thumbnail Viewer :

(you know what? BSOD just happened right before i click the submit button. -_-* luckily Chrome's restored back this page and i don't have to type everything again..)

BSOD started like a week ago. I've been trying to find ways of why it happened or what to do stuff, found one, tried it but to no avail.. and my pc really crashes a lot. I found this place a few days ago and read a few posts. Read the posting instructions for BSOD and i downloaded the SF Diagnostic Tool. I've attached the zip file.

That's one problem. The second problem is, on 1st November i found out that i could not rename any files that i wanted and i was using safe mode too. so i tried to play around with cut, copy, paste or delete and nothing happens. except for cut maybe, because it greyed out when i cut but it won't copy to anywhere else. even if i use drag and drop nothing happens. the same goes for copy-paste with keyboards. no errors warnings or messages, it just does nothing. my recycle bin seems so lonely nowadays..

oh, i've tried some of the methods suggested in some pages here by using unlocker or lockhunter but ... though it seems i can rename the files now by using lockhunter.

the result for SF Diagnostic Tool didn't go to my desktop either. it ended up in my other disk not OS.

Any kind of help is really really appreciated..

I require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this;

Copy "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker" to "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbutcher"

The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. It may be the case that the 4tonbaker folder is on;
C:\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or
D:Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or even
E:\Games\mystuff\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker

and I require the end user to have no need to know, just for the directory to be copied and renamed when and where it is found.

If possible I then want the batch file to perform a second task. I want to distribute a folder, lets say it is 4tonbutcher and in that folder there are files lets say doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt

On any given users PC 4tonbaker has these same named files but the content is different to the ones in my folder 4tonbutcher, I want to update the newly created folder, 4tonbutcher with the new txt files I d... Read more

I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. I find no alerts in control panel/administrative tools/event viewer.
PS
I am still able to copy/paste the files and also able to drag & drop. This is a slight inconvenience & hopefully fixable?

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. (reinstalling nero also didn't work)

Could anyone suggest a program or something that i could download so that i can burn my files to cd?

PLEASE does someone have an answer, i've been searching everywhere, my Dell laptop has done the same thing.
two days ago I picked up a virus, the fake MS antivirus scanner thats clogs up the system with fake error reports.
I went through the manual removal instructions i found on various sites.
seemed to work.
I ditched my antivirus app and installed avast as is has been very good on desktop machine.
everything was fne until i tried internet explorer, i searched something on google then everytime I clicked a result I was taken to a random site, firefox worked as normal.
So I searched and found a lot of people having IE and google redirect problems, I tried to follow instructions to fix this and someone suggested just doing a diskclean using windows system tool....
after doing this my machine rebooted in windows basic mode, no XP options in appearance, AND no network drivers....NO internet.
AND no task bar, managed to bring up a task bar but it is fixed with links for desktop, my documents, my computer, and network places.
programs seem to open ok BUT there is no copy and paste
drag and droping icons doesn't work, I tried to plug in an external hard drive to backup some files and it had to reinstall the drivers, then I couldn't move any files.

I am in real trouble here. All my wife's work files are on the machine, the external hard drive was bought to backup her data, and now the laptop is completely locked in, I can't get anything on to it or off it.

Is there an automated way to move files from one drive to another so that it can be put on a scheduler to run at predetermined intervals. To be clear, this is a move, not a copy. The files must be removed entirely from the source drive after they are placed on the destination drive.

A:An automated way to Move files (not copy)?

Use the Move command. At a command prompt, type:

move /?

and you'll see the syntax and command line switches.

Then write the proper command for your files and save it as a .bat file (a "batch" file), something like movemyfiles.bat.

For example, to moves the files in C:\Temp to D:\Destination, the line would look like this:
move /y c:\Temp\*.* d:\Destination
The /y suppresses prompting and automatically overwrites existing files with the same name.

If you need to move file from more than one folder, just add additional lines.

Then you can create a Scheduled Task that automatically runs the .bat file whenever you wish, assuming your PC is turned on. Or, you can place a shortcut on you desktop to the .bat file and double-click it run it whenever you wish. Or both!

I'm just starting a major move-round of files, particularly long-term info and photos, from two PCs to a new Seagate Expansion drive.

This is a question that has often occurred to me, and with the volume of 'shift' I'm looking at, it becomes quite significant.

I've always worked on the basis that if you copy files, if anything goes wrong, you still have the source files, which you can delete when you've checked the copy is complete and accurate.

On the other hand, to simply 'move' the files I wanted moved, would be a whole lot less hassle.

What is the risk of a move (particularly a large one) going wrong, and leaving you without what you want to preserve ? What is 'your' considered practice ?

Sincerely

By reading a few posts on this site, I used takeown -f and icalcs.exe c:\ /grant Administrator:F commands with no success. (The commands are processed successfully).

I booted under Linux and tried to move the files with no success again.

What's wrong?

Hi everyone..

I am in a bit of trouble here. I have 1000+ collection of movies. All these movies are mixed, some are in SD format avi, and some in full HD mp4 format. All these movies are located under one folder, My Movies Collection. Underneath it, all the movies have their own respective folder for example Movie Title 1, Movie Title 2, and so on. Under all this Movie Title X, there are the files (Movie title.avi/mp4,movie title.srt,etc). I am using Media Center Master software to automatically create the folder and rename all the movies accordingly.

Now I am planning to separate these movies to 2 SD and HD folders. Therefore under the My Movies Collection folder, there are 2 folders My Movies SD and My Movies HD. Since the files/folders are more than 1000+. it is quite hard for me to differentiate between which folders having the avi, or which one having the mp4.

Could you guys suggest is there any 3rd party tool to help me on this matter? Or built in Windows apps? Just now I tried using Windows 7 search function *.avi, but when I move the files onto the My Movies SD folder, only the file is being moved, not the whole folder.

I would be very grateful if you guys can help me on this.

Pardon me for my English since I am from Malaysia.

Cheers guys!!!
