Excel 2013 vba - problem with DAO read-only file

Q: Excel 2013 vba - problem with DAO read-only file

I converted a large addin from excel 2003 using DAO to access several workbooks.

Now using excel 2013.

The addin works in both Update and read-only modes. A 2nd user logging on will open the workbooks in read only mode automatically.

The conversion to 2013 went well but DAO will not work when the workbooks are opened in read-only mode. I get the error "external table is not in the expected format".

The exact same code works fine when the workbooks are opened in update mode.

Very puzzling - can anybody help?

I am really frustrated as I have a lot of users depending on the outcome. They have to continue using 2003 for the moment.

The line in the code that fails is ...

Set db = OpenDatabase(myfile, False, False, "Excel 8.0")

myfile is an .xlsx file

help very much appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG!
Just started using 2013 my self and was experiencing similar problem. While research mine I found this on StackOverflow concerning switching from ace.oledb to jet.oledb. You may need Jet runtime on your box.

My issue is different in that I wasn't swapping from Jet to ACE. I'm doing 2010 vs 2013. Still researching\testing mine as it seemed to work then quit working. Please post your findings.

We created an Excel shared file where multiple users can access it on the server, make any edits, then they manually save their changes so that others (after they also manually save the same file) can see those changes.
Since one of the computers is hooked up to an office large screen, we want that file which is being shown on the large screen to automatically save (thus seeing any changes made by others) without having to go to that computer and manually saving (thus updating the file) every 5 minutes or so.
I tried various settings on that PC linked to the large monitor in the options section under Save, but nothing seems to work, forcing me to actually do a manual save every 5 minutes or so.
Can this be done automatically on that PC hooked to the large monitor without having someone do this manually at that PC every 5 minutes or so (or whatever interval time period somebody decides to do this)?
Please assist if at all possible; thank you very much.

I have 2 corrupted Excel files that I store on Microsoft SharePoint.  I store hundreds of other Excel 2013 files there, but 2 recently became corrupted.  Actually, the only 2 that became corrupted were password protected.  When I try to open each file, it says that they can't be opened because they are corrupted.
I've tried every available recover option and advice; recover formula, data, excel recovery software, open and repair, etc.  I believe that because the files are password protected, standard Excel recovery programs won't work.  I've tried 6 of the more common ones that come up in a google search and they all can't repair the file.  I can't remove the password because it won't open due to the corruption.  In other words, I don't have the option to enter a password because it says that it is corrupted before I have a chance to enter a password.
I've heard that it might be ransom ware or a virus, but nothing has popped up on my computer and all of my non-password protected Excel files are corrupted.
I've tried opening and repairing the file with Excel 2007, too...no luck.
I'm running Windows 8.1, Excel 2013.  Both corrupted Excel files are small...less than 300 kb.
I have the password, so has anyone else had this problem?  If not, does anyone know of someone I could hire to extract the data that I had in the spreadsheet?

Hi Rafales,

Please try start 'Excel' in 'Safe Mode' and check if it works. To start it in 'Safe mode automatically', click this link: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668693
- Click 'Run' in the 'File Download dialog box', and follow the steps in the 'Microsoft Fix it wizard'

If 'Excel' still does not work as expected, a conflict with another program is likely. Try to restart 'Windows' in 'Safe mode', and perform the previous steps again to run 'Excel in Safe mode'; and check results.

Do reply with the findings; will take it forward from there.

Inside .acc file is a simple text, but the mighty Excel tries to open it like some kind of database. It is asking for accounts, sources, passwords etc. and finally it cannot open it at all. It can open this file if I change extension to something else like .txt or .xls. How can I turn off this useless function of Excel 2013? The Excel of 2003 just opens it without any question.

While in excel, I would like to open another excel file and read some information.

The file I am reading from, will have a row with "Avg." in Col A with data in Col B through L in that row that I want to extract. The data line will be in a different place in all excel files and there may be 2 lines to read.

At this time, I have used the Open command successfully to find the file but do not know how to proceed (?the open structure may be wrong?).

I am familiar with loops and variables but can can not figure out the rest unique to excel.

I've got Excel 2000. (Win98)
The PC froze / hung-up while in excel. Could only power off to restart.
Now when you access the file you get a message that the "file is in use" and can only be opened in read only mode.

"When you open a file that is in use, you'll get a message that tells you the file must be opened in read-only mode. In some cases, you may get this message even though the file is definitely not in use. This can be caused by an Excel crash, in which the file was not released."

The file was being accessed on another PC via a basic household network.
Our work around at present was to access the file in Read-only mode and save it as a new file. The old file still exists. I can't delete it as I get the same file in use message.

But, I'm still working on the older file to see if I can unlock it some how.
Tried the following:
1) Check/deleted temp files on the editing PC.
2) Checked the file attributes on the file (Note: the file did not have the "Read-only" attribute ticked)
3) Now checking the source PC for temp files.

Any direction greatly appreciated.

You storing the files on Skydrive? That may be how it works, copy all of the files you need to work with locally, then you'll be able to open them all at once. I think Ofice 2013 gives you one file from a cloud service at a time, thats how most of them work.

A:Read only file -EXCEL

All recipients are losers.

Not really.
But SOME people DON'T understand SOME things.

For one, if you're sending the file as a zip file, they could be opening the Excel file within the zip file and not extracting it first.

For another, they could be opening the file directly through the email message and expecting to be able to then save it.

For another, make sure you're SAVING your file before sending it. (Less likely of an issue.)

Next time they complain, I'd find out if they're inside their email message or not. You can ask them to hit File-Save as. If the folder is one they don't recognize, then it could be, for instance, Outlook's message store folders.

Have you tried forwarding their email messages (from your sent items) to yourself to see if you get the same problem? If you're not, likely it's the recipient at the other end.

In Excel 2010, I opened a Read-only file, made a lot of changes, and tried to File-Save As.

Nothing happens.

A web-search I got some info, maybe the MS Office update tool was recently installed? Not in my case.

go to explorer, the read-only file and check off Read-only in Properties. Can't, its not saved to anything, and Excel gives a message the file is read-only, please save under a new file name.

I tried File Save As, but nothing happens, no dialog box to input a new file name.

BTW, this is a large excel file, around 27 MB.

A:Excel file read-only, but can't File-Save as

Offhand, wondering if the Save As dialog box is opening behind the Excel program window. Maybe reducing the size of the excel window, then trying save as again? (it may be visible if that is happening) Also a possibility is to just try Save. That should produce a message and also offer the opportunity to Save As. Any additional info you can acquire will be helpful for resolving this.

The total number of nurses at the side is read from another excel file called 'Input file for # of nurses'

Now the problem is that if clear a schedule then the number of nurses used is not getting updated at the side.....if I clear a schedule then the number of nurses at the side should also get updated....for example(If I create a schedule with 3 nurses and if only a total of 3 nurses are available then..... the used number of nurses for that specific time at the side will get updated to 3 from 0 and if I clear that schedule then the used nurses for that time should again become 0)....

The other problem is that if I schedule a surgery then all details of the surgery will be saved in another excel sheet called 'input file for patient details' so if I clear a schedule then all the details of that surgery saved in that excel sheet should also be cleared......

Can't read an Excel 2007 file on one computer. I have tried to open this file on one computer and when it opens the fields are blank but if I open it on another computer it opens fine. The file used to open on this computer but no longer will. I have uninstalled Excel and reinstalled it but that made no difference. This computer is running XP and any help you can give would be great.

A:Can't read an Excel 2007 file on one computer

Have you determined whether it is just a specific Excel 2007 file that won't display data on this machine ... or if other Excel 2007 files also won't display? That test should reveal whether the problem is with the file on this machine ... or with Excel on this machine.

If it is just this file ... how is the program accessing the file (over a network? or from the machine's hard-drive?). If the file is located on the machine's hard-drive ... perhaps it was corrupted when imported ... and you might want to try re-importing the file from a machine on which there is currently a working version?

I'm hoping someone with a fair understanding of Excel and VBA can give me a hand here

I don't really use Excel much, even less the VBA side of things (more web type things).

Here is the problem, I receive a file of tabulated data in Word format which I need in Excel, with the data in the correct cells. Currently someone is transcribing this manually which is taking about a week every month

It is a fixed file format (columns always start in the same place) so can be saved as a txt file, but being fixed format there is no delimiter so Excel dosen't know what to do with it and just sticks the whole thing in cell A,1.

I have read that there is a funtion workbooks.opentext which might be able to help but i'm unsure of the parameters and how to implement this

I'm using Excel 2000 with the built-in VBA 6 (I think).

Any help is gratefully received

Excel is my weakest area of office programs so I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is possible and possibly offer any advice on how to implement it.

I have a spreadsheet with a list of names and dates and what that person is doing on each day. I also have a text file of whenever each person is away, which I export from a calendar. What I want to do is have excel read the text file and write to the correct cell based on what the text file says.

Example text file
Tom - Holiday 13/07/2010 14/07/2010
Harry out 14/08/2010 16/08/2010

Attached is an example spreadsheet.

So based on this text file I would want to fill in cell C3 with "Holiday" (the second date is the first return date) and cell D5 and E5 with "out"

Is this possible to do?

I've got a small Excel file I've tried to save to a diskette, but, after the one time out of many tries it finally did write it, it won't read when I try to look at it, gives me an error message, So, I saved it to a CD-RW, everything went okay, I can read it, but now when I want to update it, it says "Cannot save the file xxxxxx. The file exists and is marked read only. Save the file with another file name or another location." And a couple of times it told me I did not have rights to access this file. I'm the only one on this computer, and I'm listed as the administrator, so I don't understand that either.

All I want to do is overwrite the file to update it every now and then. But I can't. I've always been able to do this on a diskette, but can't even do that now. Is it not possible to do this on a CD-RW? I don't want to write a new file every couple of days. The diskette would be fine if I could get it to work. Can anybody give me some advice?

I'm just using what came on XP Home to burn disc's and always have, because I don't do any music coping and this has always worked fine up until now. Just did a reformat of my computer about three weeks ago, but I can't see why that would be a problem, I put it back just as it was to begin with.

Thanks in advance for any help. And if this info is to be found somewhere else here at TS, I couldn't find it.

A:Cannot save Excel file, marked read only

If you leave the disc open, you can overwrite files as long as the disc is a -RW disc and not a standard -R disc. Honestly I've had bad experiences with -RW and leaving discs open. That was ages ago and CD-Rs are so cheap now. O've been told that OfficeXP doesn't like floppy discs. I have no proof of this. I haven't used a floppy in quite some time either.

Hi everybody

I need help for reading data from text files and saving it under different columns in the excel file using vba macro.

For example: I have many text files in the following format

File 1:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

File 2:
1 2 3 4
1 3 5 7
1 3 1 8

In excel file the above files should be saved one below the other seperated by the name of the text file, in seperate coumns as found in the text file.

I found an example online but it saves the data under a single column only. I tried changing it to my requirement, but I couldn't. I have attached the example that I found online.

I have a Windows 2003 server R2 Sp1 and XP SP2 workstations with Office 2000. Occasionally 2 users are able to access the same excel 2000 spreadsheet at the same time without receiving a file open notice until the second user tries to save the file. Then they receive a message stating that the file is in use and that they can do a save as. Usually if a user tries to access a file that is already in use, they receive a file in use popup and they are given the choice to open read only, notify or close. This issue does not happen all the time and is not specific to one particular file. And the file was never setup for sharing. I've checked my security and permissions for the shares and I don't see a solution. I've suspected file corruption and copied the data into a new file and replaced the old file thinking that would solve the problem and no luck. Is there something I'm missing?

In SAP portal we are running reports.
With IE8 we export a report to excel and then change the layout of the report and export the same report again. Every time we export the report to excel we get the another version of the filename. The first time ReportBudger is made and then ReportBudget
(1), ReportBudget (2) and so on.
We have upgraded to IE11. But now with IE11 the version of the files are not consequently incremented. So we get the errors: "File with the same name already exists" and "Unable to read file".
With Firefox it works also properly. We do not have that problem.

A:Read Only problem in Excel

Close the Excel file, view it in its folder, right click it and select Properties, un-check Read Only. Also, if the workbook is already open by another user you will get the warning upon opening the file that it is in use by another person and give you the option of opening as read only.

The only other thing I can think of is that you are opening this from a CD/DVD drive, whereas you cannot save to; you must burn to these drives and cannot exchange data traditionally as you would on a hard [disc] drive.

I am trying to pull a dashboard view from a "Tracker". Given below is the formula that I used:

=COUNTIFS('KT Tracker'!$T$2:$T$138,$C$2,'Tracker'!$U$2:$U$138,"<="&TODAY()+7,'Tracker'!$L$2:$L$138,'Monthly Dashboard'!$B17,'Tracker'!$AF$2:$AF$138,'Monthly Dashboard'!$A$13,'Tracker'!$AD$2:$AD$138,"<>Cancelled")

This perfectly works fine in my laptop that has excel 2013 but when I email this to my team who have Excel 2010, they only see zeros. We have checked all options like enabling Automatic Calulcation of Formula, removing all named ranges in the sheet etc., but it is just not working.

Can you please help ? This is a bit urgent and I need to present this for a meeting tomorrow.
Appreciate your help and thanks in advance !!!

I have an excel sheet that is set up as a shared workbook. The file is used for scheduling engineers and needs to be constantly updated by multiple users.
I have set up NTFS permissions so that all the relevant members of staff can make changes and update the file as required. I have setup a separate user who has read only access. This user is for a display screen where the engineers can come and look where they are scheduled to be working. I do not want the sheet to be modified by this user.

The problem I then have is that the spreadsheet does not update automatically every 5 mins (as it is set to). If the sheet is exited and re-opened, the changes show up.

Does anyone know of a way around this?
(the engineers need a mouse to be able to scroll around the sheet)

I upgraded to Office 2013 and all of my accounts where automatically captured and added to 2013, this was very useful.

However ...

I tried to add another account and Office crashed. My computer has been doing similar things recently so I thought nothing of it. I restarted the computer and tried again.

To my surprise, Office crashed again.

When I opened Office again after another restart, it showed the 2 new accounts in the mail section on the left ribbon/column. This was obviously an error so I tried to delete them and start again.

In File > Account Settings, the 2 new accounts were not visible BUT these 2 accounts DID have data files. I thought if I deleted the data files (which I had to do manually) the accounts might be removed. I was wrong. Not only were the accounts not removed, but when I started Office again the data files returned, good as new.

I am trying to delete 2 accounts (visible in the ribbon/column in the Mail section) which are not shown in the Account Settings, but both have a data file. Both data files cannot be removed.

Any help to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!

If you right click on the account name in the ribbon/column in the mail section, there should be an option to remove "accountname"

Does that work?

I've downloaded data from Sharepoint Excel Services into an Excel spreadsheet.

The data ultimately comes from a DB maintained in Sharepoint.

I need to be able to enter numbers into the cells after downloading.

But when I try to enter data, I get an Excel error saying "The {name of column here} is a read-only column that cannot be modified."

The Sharepoint developer and I are both trying to find out why this happens and how to prevent and/or work around it.

I cannot unlink the data because it needs to be re-synchronized back up to the Sharepoint DB.

The Sharepoint developer is trying to find out the correct settings in Sharepoint to prevent the lockout from occurring.

(When she tries it, she *is* able to edit the data in the cells).

For my part I am approaching this from the other end to see if there is any way to unlock it once I've downloaded it into Excel.

Anyone familiar with this?

I have absolutely no experience with protecting ranges or sheets or making things read-only or not in Excel.

(When I view the data directly in Sharepoint I am able to edit the data. I obviously have the correct permissions on that end when interacting directly. It's just the downloaded version that I can't change.)

Hello, Sorry if this is jumbled, I am helping a friend with there computer when they gave it to me they were unable to get into windows because there password didn't work. So I fixed that and got into windows and then I saw the root of the problem... TONS of malware and viruses. It wouldn't connect to the internet even. So the first step was booted in safemode with networking, used RKILL, then used TDSKILLER, after it found things( I don't have the logs sorry) I then was able to install and update MALWAREBYTES before this I couldn't get a connection after running TDSkiller i was able to get a connection but it would only hold for like 5 min at a time. So I installed MALWAREBYTES, updated it and ran a full scan which took 6hrs by the way which spent most of the time in a folder C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WIndows\Temporyinternetfiles and same thing with the ending content.ie5....(byt the way I have never seen a folder scan this long) I scan my own computer all the time and it never does this)  I even went to look for this folder on here and the tempfilefolder isn't there or the content.ie5.... going on...SORRY. what Malwarebytes found I removed it was a lot of Zero Access and the Internet security2013. I then rebooted the computer. don't have this log either. I then ran malwarebytes rootkit and it also found stuff. removed them as well. I then ran superanti spyware it found about 29 items. removed them. and I then ran CCLEANER.. restar... Read more

Using Windows Vista, I have a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 file which I use regularly. It is password-protected, contains Macros and has many sheets which contain linked formulas between sheets.

Yesterday, I went to open it after I used it several times throughout the day. It's now giving me a "Unable To Read File". I clicked "OK" "Enabled Macros", typed in password, and it gave me "Excel found unreadable content in myfilename.xls. Do you want to recover the contents of this Workbook? If you trust this Workbook, click Yes." I clicked "Yes", and it took me back to click "Enable Macros" again, then to insert password again. Then it gives me the "Unable To Read File" again, then password again. Then it brings up a window with "Damage to the file was so extensive that repairs were not possible. Excel attempted to recover your formulas and values, but some data may have been lost or corrupted." I clicked "Close".

When I looked at the sheets, it just contained alot of numbers; no format or words, etc.

I've tried to open it in Word, as others have suggested, but it has not worked. Can someone help me recover this file? I really need the contents in it's original format.

Thank you in advance.
