Preferred Solution: vista laptop acting strange but virus scanner doesnt show anything wrong

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi

Got a Toshiba Satellite laptop (Vista Home SP2, 2Gb ram) that is acting odd. When I power it on the keyboard sometimes works and othertimes doesn't respond (ie. it doesn't even let me key a login password.) I have tried reseating the keyboard and the problem comes back after an hour or two.

I have seen it repeat the same keystroke over and over......and with different keys too. If it was the same key I'd assume a keyboard problem

Wondered if something nasty was lurking.....if it is clean I'll assume it is just a hardware issue with the keyboard, but I find it odd that sometimes it is ok.

Could anyone check out the attached and let me know if they think it is infected?

My computer was infected with a trojan, in which Norton Anti-Virus picked up and removed, but now, my computer is acting doing strange things, so I put up my firewall/webprotect antivirus stuff. I'm almost pretty sure I got the primary source of the virus, but I still think there may be other traces of viral files lurking around in other profiles, here is the HJT log...

Hey,
I've tried everything I could think of and am starting to accept the loss of my data but please help if you can.

When I start my laptop everything's fine until the login screen shows. It has the Windows background, I can move the cursor but the user login doesn't appear.
I tried starting in save mode and various other settings.
At one point I accidentally started a Samsung recovery software so I reset the system without overwriting any data, but that didn't help.
I had the same problem a day ago but after forcing it to turn off and turning it on again it worked so I've tried that a lot but nothing.
Last thing I did was closing my laptop so it would've been in energy saving mode but when I opened it again, I think the screen was still on?

Open for any ideas, thank you.

So recently my laptop tends to have a mind of its own. Some of these things are:
Opening programs when computer is not in use.
Flipping monitor completely when computer in not use
copying and pasting icons on homescreen multiple times when computer is not in use.
I actually got fed up and restored the computer as that should typically work, right?
NO. Same thing is happening.
I have researched these symptoms and it looks like Im the first person ever cause I cant find a fix nor resolution to this.
If anyone can help, it would be a great help.

About a week ago my laptop has started to act really strange.

IL give a few examples.
One is when I left click to say open Firefox from a shortcut on the desktop. When I go to double left click to open Firefox up pops a screen asking me to confirm id like to delete the shortcut.
The keyboard is not working correctly. Like the keys at the bottom wont work. When I hit them I just get a beep noise. Also if I am in Firefox and I start to type if I hit the letter D(Example) up pops a screen asking me to bookmark the page. (There just a couple of the things as examples that happen, there r more)

I have done a clean install of win7 but its still the same, I have ren a load of virus and spyware programs and noting has changed. I am at a total loss of what to do... I cant fix this myself it seems. Can anyone help me out on what might be wrong and what I need to do to try fix it?

I really hope someone can help, Im lost here :-/

A:Laptop acting strange

Sounds like you have spilt a cup of coffe on the keyboard! Seriously is this possible? There is treally no point in running "loads" of AV's. Just one will do. Did you have an AV running before this problem started as you could now have a bug in the BIOS!

Hi deb410s.

We need some more info to suggest you the appropriate steps. Upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.
Click on the start button
Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.

I am having some strange things going on...It started with the inability to update my McAffee and AIM. Neither would allow me to do so on my daughter's name, but I could do the AIM on mine. But now, I can't install either. I have tried to update IE6 and install IE 7, but am unable to do that either. When I check what version I have running of IE, it is blank. it isn't in my add/remove programs. I thought i would just uninstall and try again... I also have Mozillla running on the computer and it isn't 100%, but I thougth we'd start with the IE for now.
I did post a malware issue on another forum and used Hijack this and combo fix and probably other programs and was told the computer is clean.
The computer is running windows xp home edition version 2002 with Service Pack 2.

Can you help???

Hello,
So my keyboard has been fine for years but all of a sudden it started to act strange... Some key I press would have numbers with it. Like my "R" key will type out "0r" and only a few other keys are like that and my Space bar types "4"s. My number lock isnt on and I dont see any strange programs running.
If I type "R" and it comes up as "0r" I can go and delete the 0 but come on, I really cant be doing that all the time.
A virus scan showed up nothing. Im stumped. I have no clue whats wrong.

Has any one experienced this before or does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks

Ok first I downloaded autoruns and process explorer a while back because I was having some problems. And yes, I was doing what I?m not supposed to be doing, comparing others HJT logs to mine and tweaking my system accordingly. Everything has been running great except a few of my startup programs show up on your list as UNDESIRABLE. I searched the net, tried turning them off, it works better with them. The system has been running great for a few months. Fast forward to now; The other day I switched anti virus to Microsoft Security Essentials because I don?t like Avira, I used AVG for years trouble free but got infected a while back that?s why I went to Avira. Microsoft found something in one of my removable Hard drives so I deleted it accordingly to MSE.
The other day its acting up again and yesterday my screen (primary) started flickering, today its flickering more, I switched primary to my added screen incase the laptop screen should fail. Also, my desktop is changing by it self. In the past week, I have run every scanner I can find and they all say I?m free of infection. I just have this gut feeling I?m not. I guess Im ready to post my HJT log, is this the right place?

DUH: I guess I should say I have an ACER Aspire 5510 I purchased in Thailand in......05 or 06, cant remember exactly when.

A:My Laptop is acting real strange

I would sya you're likely infected. What was deleted from your external drive may or may not have been an autorun.ini (a common method of propagation for wormlike threats) - does anyone else use that drive?

anyway, if the autorun.ini file was removed the threat may still remain. seek further answers via HJT.

Sorry I already posted this once but didn't realize the full title didn't fit, I'll figure out how to delete the old one later

So two days ago I tried to open up Adobe Premiere to do some editing, and it would get to the splash screen, then just close and never open. I tried restarts, I tried reinstalling, and nothings works.

Another thing I noticed, when I did try to reinstall, I opened the SetUp executable for the program, and it took literally upwards of 5 minutes to open after I had clicked it. It's process is listed on the task manager as using 0% cpu and 0% memory, but if I let it sit there it eventually opens. Premiere itself, however, has a process that appears, climbs to 3.5% cup usage, then the splash screen disappears, and the process ends.

Then, earlier today, I was trying to print a PDF, and every time I would hit print, it would tell me no printers are installed. I tried on chrome and word, I cannot print from anywhere. When I go to the devices panel, all my printers are listed. I was able to print fine two days ago.

Why do I think these are all related? Because my laptop was doing none of these things a few days ago, and now is doing all of them all of the sudden.

What I think may be related to the issue - about two days ago, I updated malwarebytes, and all of the sudden I kept getting messages popping up about PUP's. Weird malwarebytes never said anything before. I quarantined and removed all of them.... Read more

Recently the fans of my HP Omen started acting strange. When I open Firefox and Skype for example, the fans start spinning and are going loud for a duration of around 20 seconds. I've noticed that it happens even with no software open sometimes. They were working correctly (assuming that they only turn on when the laptop is heating) , but two days ago they started working even when the lowest amount of proccesses were open and the laptop was cold. I have the latest BIOS Driver aswell as all updates in HP Support Assistant. Product number: X7H55EA#AKS

Hi, I have 2 networks, one in my warehouse and 1 home office, it is just 2 laptops, we carry back and forth on a daily basis, at my home office I have no issues it works great.

This problem started a few weeks ago, nothing has been changed, I didn't installed any new software etc. everything is the same no new hardware.

Both networks are wireless

at my warehouse, my laptop is acting strange, when I single click it does a double click, when I try to highlight something it takes forever to highlight it to copy it and so on.
the other laptop works fine,

Laptop with problems is Sony Vaio Windows 7 home edition 64 bit

Warehouse we have AT&T DSL (that is the network where my laptop acts strange)

Home Office we have Internet with cable

Any ideas what can cause the one laptop to act up and how to prevent it?

thanks for any help

Could be a lot of things but I would first re-install the cranky driver (wifi?) it may have become damaged.
Just in case run an antivirus scan.

My son attempted to download a game & managed to download some other spam programmes which I removed, but since then his laptop has been playing up.
Google chrome wont load anything other than a page saying 'your connection is not private, attackers might be trying to steal your information from www.google.co.uk (for example, passwords, messages or credit cards)'.
Malwarebytes anti malware which was working perfectly now wont open.
Can anyone please help?
Thankyou

A:Sons laptop is acting strange!!

Reboot in safe mode with networking and uninstall Malwarebytes, then delete temp files, and redownload Malwarebytes and scan your laptop with it. Once the scan is done remove those spywares etc and reboot in normal mode.

Hi,
A few days ago i was infected with defender.exe. I removed it in safe mode by disabling it and then deleting it. I had microsoft security essentials running so i don't know how it infected me. After i removed it tho, I ran a full security essentials scan and it froze up when it got to a file that simply looked like this "C:// ". The scan froze up so i canceled it and tried it again ands the same thing happened but when it froze up it went to the next file which was in japanese writing or something and then the next was in all caps "MEGATURBO.NET" and it kept switching between all 3 of these over and over again. Although i couldnt get the scan to ever finish my computer starting acting fine so i just ignored it and have been looking for the problem up ever since online.

Last night while i was playing fallout i noticed my mouse was acting funny so i ctrl alt del to task manager and saw that wmplayer.exe was turning on and off. I found some people on here have had the defender.exe virus and so i decided to post on here but when i ran the gmer program it blue screened me and crashed my comp about 40 minutes into the scan.
when i loaded it up i ran ccleaner and it said 550mb were deleted from the
C:\Windows\memory.dmp, My computer is acting very strange. Several people use it so i have no idea where it could have possibly gotten an infection.

So, my laptop (asus s56c) started acting really really strange. It has windows 8 x64 OS. It just went crazy. For example, all my usb ports stopped working with my mouse, keyboard or any other device I try. I've suspected that it could be a case of pc viruses, tried to scan pc with free version of AVG 2013 internet security, however it also acted strange. I decided to remove it and install a kaspersky 2013 anti-vir that I had, and it just didn't install. It just kept at 'Installation is almost complete' for like 1 hour. I restarted pc, but restars always started taking for 7 minutes ending up with a BSOD (DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE). I decided to reinstall windows to windows 7, but my DVD drive also refused to read anything. What the hell is happening guys?

Ok so I've had this laptop since October. Occasionally when I'm on Skype with my cam I get this weird white noise type thing. My whole screen turns into like white noise, like how tv's are on the wrong channel. It's not the regular black and white dots, but there's color to it and it's lines. So basically color noise. It has happened a few times and I have to hold the button down and restart it. Recently though, my laptop has been turning itself off. No BSOD or anything, but just shutting off on it's own. It has happened twice. Once when I was on cam and got the color noise, and now another time while I was just watching a video. I have no idea what's going on. Any advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to TSF.

I beleive this is a fairly common issue which may have been complicated by Antivirus software conflicts. Most AV's these days have a dedicated removal tool and AVG is certainly no exception. Download tools and utilities | AVG Worldwide should have been used to make sure of proper removal before installation of Kaspersky which also has a removal tool if you want to remove it. Service articles

I would normally recommend Microsoft Security Essentials but in Windows 8 you already have it except that its been renamed Windows Defender. That should be adequate for your needs but its up to you.

I suspect your bsod is driver related. We can have a closer look if you post your minidumps.

Navigate to C:/windows/minidump where you should find some logs ending in .dmp leave them in their .dmp format but zip them together and attach them to your next post.

Hello guys, first time poster on here, anyway I have a huge problem with my Vista OS I hope you can solve, so far no one has been able to help me...

Anyway, when I surf the internet I use pop ups/tabs depending on what sites I view, everything works fine for awhile, however after awhile my computer starts to act funny....

What happens is after awhile no new tabs will open, or no popups, and then to make matters worse then after awhile my right click button and scroll click button won't respond to anything, and then I can't open up any new programs, images, videos, folders, etc. And sometimes my start menu won't display my shutdown button, or the program, documents, settings, search, help and support, or run buttons/icons.

I really can't figure out how to fix this and never seen anything like it before. So I'm hoping you guys can help with the situation, thanks in advance.

EDIT: If you need certain information let me know what you need.

Hi,
I usually don't run my laptop on battery. However, I know for sure this problem didn't exist before the upgrade to Windows 7.

The battery loses charge at the rate of about 5% every 10 min.
Little time after the meter reads ~ 70% the laptop goes into automatic hibernation (first seemed to be a power options issue). But when I do "system resume" after plugging in the battery the meter shows about 10% and charging.

I have already tried calibration. (actually that's what the laptop is doing by itself).

Thanks,

Neo

Hi, guys! I'm new here. Hope I could post an introduction but I rather have an issue that needs urgent aid (at least that's what I'm supposing).

I'm not sure what is going on with my laptop or if it's something to do with malaware/virus, so I thought I would ask.

I'm running a one-month-old HP ENVY dv4 with a one-week-old upgrade to Windows 8.1 (Single language).

The other day a friend of mine came over to edit a video and had to install a video conversion software he got off the Internet at some point. When he was finished, I restored my system to the way it was before. Now, I can't say this software had anything wrong with it but my PC has been acting strange for a couple of days and paranoia sets in!

Last week I had to install new drivers for a couple of things but that was after upgrading to Win 8.1, so I supposed that was the issue. But again yesterday and today I magically got drivers failing on reboot. So...

I've tried restoring but, after installing some new Win Updates, I see all my previous restore points are gone. I have a paid version of Avira, so I ran that first. Nothing. I then have run the Windows Malaware Scanner and Fixing tool one can download off Microsoft's website. Nothing again. I've also run Spybot Search & Destroy and nothing! Last, McAfeeStinger... nothing again. But I'm still not convinced.

Yesterday, as I was installing some new software, as I clicked on all installers I got a message telling me that it ... Read more

Hi All,
I am a pc admin that is working on a machine for a good friend. She claims that her machine started acting up after she downloaded a "claim ticket" from an email from fedex. I received the laptop and immediately ran malwarebytes. This picked up some trojans, and this was found:
behavior:win32/crowti.e
behavior:win32/crowti.a
behavior:win32/crowti.b

This laptop is a hard core cad laptop for an engineer. It has 64bit os and is an Asus model. The laptop is clean with regards to programs other than autodesk and MS installs. That is the good news. The bad news is that its doing the following:

1. when shutting down images (pop ups)  flash as the computer is all but turned off.
2. When typing the space key and backspace keys stick sometimes for two or three seconds.
3. IE will just start up and loads pages (about 6 of them) with microsoft help pages. ( so far only ms pages)
4. when I try to get into safemode, itpops up asus's program and wants me to do a full system recovery so I cannot get into safe mode.

Seems like its a pre-boot corrruption. So here is what I have done. CCleaner, Malwarebytes, disk cleanup. Reset all IE browsers back to factory settings.

I did a chkdsk /r and it deleted a bunch of files, including videos (which at one time seemed to be popping up randomely)
I did a sfc /scannow and it found corrupt files that it could not fix ( I cannot open the log "access denied") I am logged in as the administrator.

Hello I just got a new laptop today, but my mic I use for gaming doesnt work! I cant even hear anything when I scream into my mic, I think its muted or somthing but I dont know how to unmute. Any help?

Its for vista 64bit

A:New Vista Laptop, Mic doesnt wok!

I use Realtek Digital Audio, may be different for you.
General this should woek.

Right click on speaker icon, Open volume mixer. If mic is listed and muted the button under the slide scale should have a red circle with slash. Click to remove the red circle.

Right click speaker icon, open recording devices. Is microphone listed? Has green bar showing if mic is registering sound. Check Properties, General tab. Should show Controller information, Jack information( jack your mic is/should be plugged into) and Device usage, Use this device (enabled)

To test your mic, Start, Accessories, Sound Recorder, Start Recording. A green bar that moves when you talk into the mic should show next to the recording time. Save file as Test. Usually saved to User/Documents folder. Open the file and play back.

So for the last week, maybe less, I have noticed that whenever I lift my laptop off a surface to move it somewhere else, there is this unnerving falling-metal, chinking noise that occurs quite loudly from the body of the laptop. It feels like there is something physical or material clicking downwards, or falling, like a metallic Jacob's ladder, and it occurs most frequently when the laptop is tilted upwards or downwards while it's being moved.

Sometimes the sound lasts only for a moment, other times it really feels like something is clicking down the entire width of the laptop body.

The laptop seems to be performing just fine, and I have not noticed anything new or irregular, but nevertheless the sound is alarming and it's made me a little worried.

Should I take the laptop to a workshop and have them check it out? Or do you think it's nothing to worry about?

Information on my laptop, in case it will help: Compaq Presario C700 Notebook PC, Windows Vista, Intel Core 2Duo CPU, 32-bit Operating System. I believe we have had the laptop for a little over 2 years now.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

A:Solved: What is wrong? Strange falling-metal, clinking noises from laptop

You may want to get it checked out ASAP. If it is a loose screw or other small metallic object, one of these days it may just accidentally short out two points on the motherboard while it is powered up and burn up some parts. Even with the laptop turned off the object could short out the internal electronics related to the battery.

Hi Guy's,

You've helped me before and I need your help again.

I went + bought a new Toshiba Satellite P105 laptop with Vista os.

As of late I've noticed some odd behavior occurring.
I have Spybot, Trend Micro, Webroot spysweeper, windefender. And yes, I've scanned often with them all.

This laptop is used for email, work, blogging, an occasional Halo non-online game, and online banking. The latter is why I'm worried.
All my online connectivity is through a Verizon wireless card.

I've never used this laptop to do online gaming, viewed any porn, or anything even close to a porn site. I've never downloaded music, or free games.
My symptoms are:
Whenever I use the search bar, it automatically puts a . in front of whatever I type in. This results in my browser refusing to search. I have to go + delete the . icon before the search feature works correctly.
Spybot has found something and been unable to clean; labeled Trojans/C.sbi
Windows installer will not install 3 important updates titled; Security Update For Win. Junk mail filter, error #8007045b. Sec. Update for MS Office, error code 80070641. Sec. Update for MS Word, error code 800 70641.
My warning icon for Windows start up programs constantly come up warning of failed startup programs. The latest being the "userinit.exe program.

I am completely Vista ignorant. If I have a bug, it must have been because of my viewing blog pages and downloading pics from the net to my blog.

I recently purchased a HP HDX18 Personal Notebook, and at first everything worked fine. I recently un-installed Norton Internet Security and installed McAfee VirusScan v8.5i and it will not update because the internet will not work.

The thing I do not understand is that I am connected to my linksys_SES_17469 network, but it says there is an error from the network to the internet. I know this is not true because on another laptop connected to the same network, the Internet works fine.

I am curious if during the time between uninstalling Norton and installing McAfee I could have acquired some type of malware/adware/etc.

I do not have much experience with Vista, or my new laptop and that is why I am posting here. Any insight or help is GREATLY appreciated, I am leaving for college soon and would love to have the wireless working by then.

Thanks in advance!!

Matthew

Hello wonderful people. A few days ago my laptop started acting suspiciously: refusing to hibernate after inactivity, or after I've shut it, and waking itself up from hibernation randomly (anything is suspicious after you let family use your computer). But scans with Symantec and MBAM don't come up with anything.

Here are the HijackThis and DDS logs (attach one is attached), but GMER didn't detect anything either, so nothing to report there. Thanks so much for your help!

Hey Guys,

I think there is something fishy going on with my laptop, there is certain things it does that makes me feel their may be a virus. It boots up all fine and the internet is working, but sometimes when I am on the net, and open up a new page, it says loading but it takes a while for the page to load up. So for example if I go on to google.com, it will say loading but will take abit longer to load, and once it loads my internet is back on to normal speed. I also noticed that my AVG was not updating, so I uninstalled avg and then tried to install avast but that won't install either, I get an error 501 something. I am posting my log file. Can you guys spot anything?

Yesterday I went to open Microsoft OneNote and found all Microsoft office programs were missing from my computer, I was able to reinstall but they do not show up in my all programs list, I have unhidden all folders and still cannot find them but can open them if I chose a file of the correct type like a word document if I want to open Word.  I looked in my system restore and all restore points had been deleted apart from one from around 12pm yesterday after a windows critical update.  I restored to that point but it has made no difference.  I decided perhaps I had malware, so I opened Malwarebytes and it opened but said I had never scanned this computer, so I tried to scan and it kept shutting down, so I downloaded it again and did a scan which came up with nothing.  I then noticed Malwarebytes wasnt running the latest update, was using June update, so I updated and ran another scan which still showed nothing.
Things just dont seem right and I don't know why, my programs list doesnt seem to be showing a lot of programs.  Thanks in advance for your advice....Elle

Over the last couple of months, I have had two viruses (a couple of weeks apart). The first was vista fix and I don't remember the name of the second one (scanner something). I followed the removal guides on bleeping computer, but my computer is still not behaving normally. I did try to follow the preperation guide, but DDS would not work. On the "am I infected" forum, I was told to run RSIT and post the log here. Below is the log.

I have 2 computers One desktop and one Laptop Both are Vista Home Premium

I want to set up a network between them to share files-printer etc

Done exactly what it says here http://www.vista4beginners.com/Enable-network-discovery-file-sharing

Went to the Desktop pc - Chose turn on network discovery, both are in Workgroup name
Picked Private Network and turn on Printer Sharing.and no passwords.

Then tried to see a folder I shared. But the laptop could not see it Or the Printer

So thought maybe I needed to set up sharing on the laptop too? Did I? It does not tell you that anywhere.

So set the laptop up exactly the same.

What am I missing here?

I know they both have to say Workgroup and they do

But what about the home name on each pc? Do they have to be the same also?

Help please

Last night I was doing some surfing and all of a sudden my computer started scanning for viruses, however it was not my usual virus scanner (AVG). It took a bit, but then I realized that it was actually a virus itself. Let AVG clean it, but apparently that didn't work. It is effecting my screensaver, I don't even have the choice anymore in my display to change my screensaver. I am a work at home mom, so my computer is my paycheck . If anyone could help me I would certainly appreciate it! Here is my HJT log.

My HP scanjet 4470c scanner, which is a couple of years old, now suddenly just does not work. My computer says that it cannot detect a scanner. Yes, I have checked all the connections several times. Do I have to buy a new scanner, or is there something I can do? I suspose this is obvious, but I wanted to ask someone before I run out and buy a new one. Thanks

A:Scanner that doesnt work

Am I correct that you have not changed operating systems (XP or 98SE)?

Is the scanner lighting up at all (on/off light, scanning bulb, anything)?

If the answer to those two questions is "Yes"- then you probably just have a corrupt driver. Generally speaking, you can un-install the old driver in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Devise Manager

In my case I have a USB scanner operating under WindowsXP- and it doesn't show up until I turn on the scanner--- Then I can highlight the scanner, right-click on it and select <Uninstall>

The next step would be to follow the manufacturer's instructions of how to re-install the scanner (Generally, unplug the USB- install the driver-- and then plug in the USB cable again --- you may have to reboot the computer before plugging the USB back in).

NOTE: If you have 98SE and parallel connections--- same basic principles but if I remember correctly, they show up whether turned on or not.

And- this might be a good time to download the newest driver from the manufacturer--

One More Thing: If you recently did an XP SP2 (like, just when this started acting up) Manufacturer's SP2 driver is required.

Obviously, this has been a bit of guesswork on my part--- but you can probably get through it from this------Good luck.
