Can not start Windows Firewall - Error Code 0x8007042c and Error 1068

Q: Can not start Windows Firewall - Error Code 0x8007042c and Error 1068

Mod Edit: Moved from Win8 to the Am I Infected forum ~~boopmeI randomly decided to look at McAfee and check my settings, etc.  When looking at the main screen, everything states its on and green.  I had the most current definitions loaded.  When I checked my McAfee firewall it stated on.  When I clicked to go into the McAfee firewall, the screen then changed and said it was off.  When clicking the Turn On button, it would immediately shut off.  I searched this issue and the blogs stated to look at the Windows Firewall under Services.  When I checked, it was not there.  I did a Windows Search for it and found it.  When it opens it gives tells me I need to Update the Firewall Settings.  When I click on Use Recommended Settings it gives me an error "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings.  Error Code 0x8007042c." I've checked out some of the blog discussions and followed a few thread about creating new register.bat files and running them.  I've also tried merging some .dll files also per the bloggers.  After doing these actions, the Windows Firewall now appears in my Services but when I click to start it I get the error "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall Service on Local Computer.  Error 1068:  The dependency service or group failed to start"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

It seems windows won't let me breath easy for long .

Problem description :
==================
I am unable to connect to wired or wireless internet, reason being, I think, is because windows firewall is not starting.
Not sure why this happened but I think its because of a false flash update which might have been a rogue program, ( rootkit kindof though NOT sure ). Also let me tell you that, I frequently use utorrent to download movies, just in case if that might be the root cause.

After going through tons of posts I thought of starting this thread which, I hope turns out to be of genuine help to others as well.

Hello:

I'm looking for some assistance. I have a Lenovo 8811 ThinkCentre desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1; 2.13gig Intel Pentium Core2 with 3 MB memory.

This is my teenage son's computer. We are trying to set up workgroup to share files across wireless network (having difficulty there, but that is another story). I noticed Windows Firewall not operational. When attempting to turn on firewall and update settings, receive message that "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x8007042c."

We use Windows Essentials for virus protections. I tried some things I found researching, but it hasn't help. Updated Windows Firewall Authorization Driver Startup type to Demand and other things. Ran Malware, SuperAntiSpyware that found several trojans, adware, etc. Disenfected and reemoved but still can't start Windows Firewall.

I'm sure there are other issues with this machine, but not having working firewall scares me. My son tells me a "Dirty Install" will fix this. I don't know what that is?

Any help is appreciated to get the Firewall up and running. Please advise if you need additional details. Thanks in advance!

Good morning to all of you!

I've discovered this treasure vault of helping tools and good advice through Google, after searching for the n-th time for a solution to my persisting problem.
Specifically I found -and read!- this thread here as the symptoms are ~99.9% similar to what I have too. The first indication that something was wrong was when the other PCs in my home network 'lost touch' with me. I found that the firewall was down and that it was impossible to start it (getting the message on the Topic Title). Then some, not all, windows updates started to fail to install -if I'm not mistaken, all of them were related to fixes to the NetFramework libraries.

Now, before I start going step-by-step through the list of actions you adviced user 'scorcher' to perform, I thought it would be useful if you had a picture of the current state my system is in. Perhaps there is something a bit different, calling for a special intermediate action. Below I append the contents of DDS.txt and I also attached file "Attach.txt" (renamed, for my convinience "1-Attach.txt").

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Hello everyone,

I bought my PC about a half year ago. My graphics card was outdated so I decided to buy a new one, and once it was installed with the drivers, everything was working fine until a few nights ago when my PC would start to boot up and constantly have to reboot.

After a few cycles, I finally got it to work but it happens every time I turn on my PC.

Another possibly unrelated error occurred when I tried to load up the steam desktop app, and it could not connect so I figured the firewall was blocking it so I went to the control panel and I'm getting the error, "Windows firewall can't change some of your settings" when I try to use recommended settings.

Thanks in advance,
XxvenomxX

P.S. I'm kind of new to computers so try not to go to technical... Thanks!

Windows Firewall won't start, getting error code 0x8007042c. BFE won't start, error 5: access is denied. I've scanned for viruses using Malwarebytes and nothing showed up. I tried downloading and adding the registry files again as suggested in some other threads, but that didn't work. I tried following the instructions in this thread for fixing the BFE, and after running

REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S

I got "ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value". The other commands returned normal results.

SFC /scannow returned corrupted files "utc.app.json" & "telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json" but this was fixed with The Tech Cookbook fix - The Tech Cookbook – Windows 7 update (KB3022345) causing corrupt files.

A few weeks ago my Network Diagnostic Service sometimes would not be running either, but that just stopped happening so I'm not sure what caused it or what fixed it.

Thanks.

After running windows in safe mode to test something my firewall stopped working. I need some help since i could not find anything related to this issue on Win10. When i try to initialize windows Firewall service i get the message error 1068 and when i try to run it through Control Painel i get another message error with the code 0x8007042c.
Anyone know what can be causing that? If you need, i can provide more information about the issue. Btw there is aN event log saved on my pc everytime i start windows (ID 7001)

i also cannot run SFC /scannow anymore.. this is getting annoying.

A:ERROR 1068: Cannot start Firewall service

The firewall service could be turned off/stopped - check this by searching for 'services' in the search bar. If the Windows firewall service is stopped, try and start it or if it is already running, try restarting it.

PS. It has been like this for a year.

A:I can't use my Windows firewall, because of the error 0x8007042c

A whole year? Wow.

First thing I'd do is run a full anti-malware scan with free Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer

I'd next run a System File Checker scan to make sure you don't have any damaged or corrupt system files. Run teh scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found, run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

See if the firewall can be used. If not, try Methods 2 and 3 in this Microsoft article.

Please post back if any of this helped or not.

Not sure what's been happening, I'm an admin on this laptop. Whenever I keep trying to start Windows Firewall it will not start any way possible.

But an error that occurs is this
Error 0x8007042c

Looked all over the internet, did mbam scans and didn't really make a difference. I do not have any other anti-virus software than mbam nor have any other sort of firewall program.

If someone could help me, I would be very grateful.

You say looked all over the Internet? Did you try adding a Local Service account? I've seen that step resolve that error more often than not. However I have seen it not resolve the issue as well. This particular error seems to have stumped many people and have multiple resolutions. The steps for adding a Local Service account are as follows:Control Panel ->Systems & Security ->Administrative Tools -> (scroll down to) Windows Firewall -> double click Windows Firewall -> click Log On Tab -> select This Account -> Browse for LOCAL SERVICE user (Advanced -> Find Now -> LOCAL SERVICE) -> Leave the password field blank Apply the changes. Here is one of several copies of the same instructions:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/windows-firewall-cant-change-some-of-your-settings/2679690e-c375-4232-ae45-404374386635Scroll down to the one dated Dec. 13, 2009 by Mladen SavicHope this helps

Hello and thank you for helping with my problem. Before I begin, here is the link for the help I have received so far by Broni. At his request, I am posting the following: About 6 months ago, I was infected by Win 7 antivirus (or security) 2011. I immediatly ran a quick scan with Malwarebytes and it found 5 or 6 infections. After rebooting, I ran it again to make sure it was off and the scan ran clean this time. Since then, there has been no indication (no slow browsing,no programs crashing, no internet disruptions) that an infection is there. Somehow today I found out that Windows Firewall was turned off. I tried to turn it on and it would not come on. It gave me error code 0x80070424. After researching the error, it looked as if it were a registry error so I turned to bleepingcomputer (see above for the link to my original post). After troubleshooting with Broni, the error I am getting when I try to start Windows Firewall is 0x8007042c. Per Broni, I followed the instructions in the Preperation Guide, starting with number 6. I was able to run everything except number 8, GMER Log, because I have a 64-bit system. I removed Win 7 Antivrus 2011, from my win 7 ultimate x64 machine.

It appears like I removed the virus successfully but can not re-enable the firewall.

I get this "Windows Firewall Can't change some of your settings, Problem Error 0x8007042c " dialog box.

I have been digging around and the firewall service is missing, the file itself has gone missing.

I tried to run scf /scannow but scf is not recognized as an executable no matter what I try.

Not sure where to look next, it appears a fair number of people have bumped into this issue.

Hello all!

ive been trying to work around this issue for about 5 hours now. I have tried many fixes that people are suggesting from all coners of the internet! If anyone else can help out that would be great!

Here are the things i have tried;

I first started this journey with the error code 0x80070424, which was fixed with the microsoft FixIt
I have now been given the error code 0x8007042c, as stated above in the title
I have tried to get poast this with FixIt from MS but with no luck.
I then went onto trying the manually starting windows fix from this website; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530126 , i can get all the way through the steps untill the last one "BFE" because this gives me an error code: 5, access denied.
Ive removed all antivirus software thinking that this may be blocking the firewall by some chance.
I have done many virus scans with all the recommened tools, and i have found nothing.
I have also gone through some of the previous threads about this problem and tried them also. It just seems that i can get past this shit if i can give myself the permission to turn on "BFE". Although im the only account on this pc so its the admin account.

So as you can see i swear im coming to the end of all the fixes out there and everything is leading to a complete reinstall of windows 7; which is a no go, because i can not be bothered with download a TB worth of games haha. ill just deal with the no window fire wall. Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer

Please use the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool.
Download: Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Download
Select the version that applies to your system.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double-click the downloaded file to run it.

When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
At the program's console, press the Scan button.

When done, the tool produces a log, FRST.txt, in the same directory from which the tool is run (Desktop).
Please provide the FRST.txt in your reply.

The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log: Addition.txt
Also post the Addition.txt in your reply.

Also, use the Farbar Service Scanner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop. Follow both steps!

Step 1.Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
Step 2.
Using AdwCleaner: Scan & Clean:
This time click on the Clean button.
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.

A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder

Ran Panda Antivirus Free and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and no virus or malware found.

I've tried the suggestions from the Microsoft website ?0x8007042c? error message when you try to start Windows Firewall but no success.

I've also gone to Services and run as admin. Received the following error messages for each when trying to start the service:

Windows Firewall will not start. Set to automatic, status "stopped". Click "start", get error code 5.

All Dependency Components are starting automatically at start-up except possibly Windows Firewall Authorization Driver. Unable to locate that driver.

Malware scanned and removed by Malwarebytes, SpeedMaxPc, Reimage, and Microsoft Security Essentials.

Norton Antivirus 2012 uninstalled; intalled Microsoft Security Essentials with option to start Windows Firewall on intallation; Windows Firewall start-up failed.

Used Microsoft "Fix-it", sfc /scannow, SpeedMaxPc, Reimage, and MSE to fix code 5; all failed. sfc /scannow says some corrupt files cannot be replaced, for more info see C:/windows/log/cbs/cbs.log
The other services say my system is safe in excellent operating condition.

Used Reimage to restore computer to an earlier state prior to problem; failed.

I am fairly certain the Windows Firewall Authorization Driver is either corrupt or missing. How do I nail this down? Or what exactly is the problem?

Hello all,

This my first experience here, but i plan to stay tuned to this forum as it seems to be the most authoritative and useful forum that I have come across on the Web. I will definitely be more on the receiving end than the advising end, I'm afraid.

I have apparently been attacked by a malicious trojan (at least, I think that's what it is). Java/Anogre.E (and apparently some others along with it) . No apparent malfunction at this point.  I have Microsoft Security Essentials running on Windows 7 (64 bit).  MSE apparently blocks repeated attempts at this intrusion, but it seems that my Windows Firewall is out of commission.  My Registry has apparently been corrupted and I cannot run any of the programs necessary to start Windows Firewall.

I have run a Full Scan of MSE and it does not find anything. I have completely uninstalled Java and downloaded a new version. I have also run SFC/SCANNOW and it is not able to fix the problem.  I have followed the advice of many people without any success.  In most cases, the final advice has been to throw in the towel and do a complete reinstall of Windows 7 (advice that, although well intentioned, only serves to give me a headache).

The only successful solution that i have come across is here on this forum in a thread from early December of 2011.  In that event, the person with the Firewall problem had the username, Demand209.  The person who guided him through the ... Read more

when trying to restart windows firewall i am getting this... "service-specific error code 5"
using HP G62 laptop running Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium 64-bit

i had a rootkit on the laptop and i think it's completely removed but i still cannot activate the firewall, I used kaspersky rescue disk 10, rkill and mbam to remove rootkit.

hope someone can help....

A:Unable to start Windows Firewall service-specific error code 5 Win7 64bit

System error code 5 is "access denied". http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms681382%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

But I don't know if your error code is a system error code. If it is, you can check the permissions on the firewall service with this command:

sc sdshow MpsSvc

I have this on my test machine:
D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)
(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;IU)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;SU)(A;;CCLCRP;;;S-1-5-80-<omitted>)

Hello, I've been looking around the net for a while and still have not found any solutions for my problem. And seeing that there's quite the excellent service here in bleepingcomputer, I thought I'd give it a try and ask for help. So far I have my BFE fixed and running in the Services, but Firewall and Windows Defender aren't. Firewall gives me the error code 5 message while Windows Defender gives me the 0x080007024 error. I went and tried the steps in this thread : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/445861/windows-firewall-not-starting-error-code-0x80070424/ (Ignored the BFE parts cos it's been fixed) but stuck in the #10th post seeing as it wouldn't let me register the .reg file. It shows this error : Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes. Oh yeah, before I end this post; Here's the FSS scan results : ------------------ Farbar Service Scanner Version: 20-02-2013Ran by PC (administrator) on 01-03-2013 at 06:04:35Running from "C:\Users\PC\Desktop"Windows 7 Home Basic Service Pack 1 (X86)Boot Mode: Normal**************************************************************** Internet Services:============ Connection Status:==============Localhost is accessible.LAN connected.Google IP is accessible.Google.com is accessible.Yahoo IP is accessible.Yahoo.com is accessible.  Windows Firewall:=============MpsSvc Service is not running. Hi,

I have a Windows 7 machine that is having an issue with Security Center. It had a small amount of PUP and Trojan Variants, but I took care of them.

However, the Trojans must have ran as Security Center has stopped working out of nowhere.

I get error 1068 when trying to boot WSCVM through the Services tab. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is running and booted, whereas Windows Management Instrumentation, will not boot or run.

Any ideas on what to do here? Would this REGFix file do the trick?

Windows Security Center Service has been removed - Microsoft Community Is that safe to use?

A:[SOLVED] Windows Security Center Can't Start - Error 1068

Hi, net helpmsg 1068 at the prompt returns:-

The dependency service or group failed to start.

The fix in your post is to replace the registry service entry for Wscsvc (security centre) it does not appear that this is needed. We need to look at the dependencies.

I note you say WMI will not start.

We need to see more of your services open a cmd as admin and run the following in red:-

echo > 0 & sc qc Winmgmt >> 0 & sc queryex Winmgmt>> 0 & sc qc Dcomlaunch >> 0 & sc queryex DcomLaunch >> echo >> 0 & notepad 0
press enter

Next run:- Net start > 0 & notepad 0 press enter

Please post the notepad outcome's here.

Hi all. After a week with this problem, Audio Windows service that won't start and to avoid the Microsoft support advice: reinstall XP, then re update with Vista Ultimate...

Here was my case : Audio windows service dont start because another one don't either : the Audio End point Builder (AudioEndpointBuilder) with 998 error ?!
Many solutions found didn't work, then I tried another one given for another sound problem, and it worked for me :

- copy the file audiosvr.dll from another Vista PC (not especially Ultimate)
- paste it on one of your drive ex: D:\
- Boot/Start with Vista dvd
- Choose the "Repar" option
- Than choose the "Command Line" option
- To type "copy d:\audiosrv.dll c:\windows\system32\audiosrv.dll"
- Restart !

If only i could save you from a all reinstallation... Hope this helps !

I have used this link Diagnose and fix Windows Firewall service problems automatically and downloaded the fixer. This told me that the problem may be occurring because of a group policy or Norton security firewall program. I do not know how to change either of these. Any sort of help would be much appreciated.

A:Error Code 5. Firewall. Firewall does not start.

Do you have norton security installed?

If so it uses its own firewall, in which case you do not need windows firewall on. You should not run more then one firewall at a time.

Ok - I'm trying to fix my friends' computer - Toshiba Satellite L455-S5975 running Windows 7 32-bit

Windows firewall is off and I need to "Update Firewall Settings". When I click use recommended settings, I get a message that says it "can't change some of your settings. Error code 0x80070424" I get the same thing when I click on "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" and "Restore Defaults"

When I click on "Advanced Settings" I get "There was an error opening the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security snap-in" followed by it "failed to load. Restart the Windows Firewall service on the computer you are managing. Error code 0x6D9."

I scanned the computer using both Avast and Microsoft Safety Scanner (full scan and took over 2 hours) - no infections or issues found

I installed all Microsoft updates and followed suggested restarts.

I ran Microsoft Fix It and I get a message that the firewall isn't running or stopped and it can't be fixed.

I have gone into services as an administrator to try and start Windows Firewall...it isn't there - not in the list of services (local)

I also used SlimDrivers to update all the drivers on the computer.

What I am not seeing is how to uninstall and reinstall Windows Firewall...any other program or hardware issue, that would seem to be the easiest solution - but I have yet to see how to do that with Windows Firewall.

I even started the computer in safe mode... Read more
