5.1 Sound - PC Processing vs. Stereo Receiver Processing

Q: 5.1 Sound - PC Processing vs. Stereo Receiver Processing

Laptop: Sager NP9150
Receiver: Sony STR-K850P
Audio: Realtek HD
Connection: SPD/F Optical Cabe
Listening mode: AFD Auto - runs everything as 2.1

Issue: when I know I'm utilizing a 5.1 source, the receiver only auto-detects 5.1 sound from DVD movies. Sources such as Netflix streaming and Steam games do not detect as 5.1.

I've run a few tests and for Netflix, I think the answer is as simple as selecting whatever Dolby flavor I think is applicable (Dolby ProLogic I or II, etc.) That seems to work fine.

For games, I'm less certain. I've read that games do not send 5.1 audio over SPD/F optical. The tests that I've run seem to indicate that in games, when I force a Dolby format with the receiver, it just sends the audio to all the speakers. In movies (DVD or netflix) I can (I think) tell that the individual speakers seem to be doing different things.

So, anyway - I apologize if this is all very confusing.

One thing I've hit on, is that I can use a hacked Realtek HD driver that allows me to force Dolby Digital Live. What is that? How does it work? Right now, it just seems to be muddying the waters.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello Everybody.

Brief Intro
This is my first post here. I lurked this forum and many others trying many solutions to the similar problems of others to no avail. I chose to join this forum to ask my question because you all seemed the most knowledgeable. I know a bit about computers, as I spent a while as an Electrical/Computer engineering student before I switched to Mechanical to focus on robotics, and have dealt with many computer issues before. This one has me stumped at the moment.

Problem: Windows sound and processes "skipping" approximately every 2 seconds. The optical drives do NOT have this problem unless I am trying to run other processes simultaneously. Mp3, Youtube, Streaming video, MPEG, all skip. It is really more of a flutter than a skip, like the signal is being broken down bit by bit for a second and then it goes back to normal. Repeating over and over. It just started doing this randomly one day when i fired it up.

Things I've tried:
-Reinstall Audio/Video drivers
-Ran Cleanup
-Ad aware
-Manually checked running processes for things running out of Temp
-DirectX diagnostic
-Disabling wireless zero configuration via admin tools
-System restore
-Defrag hard drive
..and a bunch of other crap I gathered from forums that didn't do anything.

System Specs:
Toshiba Satellite laptop.
1.6 GHz Single core Intel
100 GB Hard drive
512 mb RAM
Windows XP SP2.

Anything else you need to know, ask and I'll get it for you.

A:Laptop sound skipping / Processing lag. Please Help

you need more RAM
especially if you're trying to run multiple applications and streaming video.
you need to go to toshiba's website and find out what the best ram your machine will take is, and how much you can expand to.
Try and upgrade to at least 1GB, and if you can go to 2GB thats even more recommended.

For 2 main reasons i kindof decided to buy a Dell laptop, being
I am an Ubuntu user and dont want to pay for a windows license.
There are options for personal configurations if  you buy a business model...
But i need some expert help for making my choice.
The goal of the laptop that i'm planning to buy, without limitations of budget is
Being able to do realtime parallel processing (several simultaneous and complex calculations) of multiple high quality (96khz-24bit) audio streams with external usb soundcard
I choose for a laptop for being able to move it around, but weight and portabality are not really important because it only leaves its place like once every few months.
Not planning to do video editing/gaming/watching movies/etc... with it.
What i would need
The best processor possible without heating problems when the laptop is used for alot of hours of heavy workload in combination with a graphix card that does not have a bigh weight on the total price.

I hope you have enough information to help me decide what the best choice for me would be.

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with unusual problem. (Running on a WIN 2000 sys)

We own a radio station and recently installed a high end sound card (ECHO MIA MIDI) to enhance listeners streaming experience. The on-board sound card worked fine but the sound quality was not what we wanted.
Now we're having some big problems. If we run any other application on this computer the sound quality sometimes becomes great distorted. SOmetimes it will start running real slow audio and other times it will just lock up.

To resolve the problem I added a 1 gig of memory as we were previously running in a 512 ram memory environment... Now we're running with 1 1/2 gigs of memory but the problem is taking place.

The sound card has two input jacks that we are using to bring the sound in from another computer.

Appreciate you help in this matter. Joe

I've been getting an occasional Generic Host Processing Error. Whenever I get these errors, the results have been I have no sound (cannot play a CD or watch a vidfile or even get notification tones). I usually reboot the computer and this solves the problem until the next random time it acts up. But since Thursday last week (upgraded to highspeed) I'm now getting them every single time I boot up. This is an unacceptable problem now. I copied this from the text box of the error report.

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00018fea.

I have XP SP2 (OS).

How do I fix this?

Thank you in advance,

Here is my situation. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers connected to my pc. I decided it would be nice to be able to run the ps3 through the surround sound for blu-rays and gaming without having to buy a whole new surround sound system. The setup that I have now sounds great for stuff on my pc. However, my pc didn't have an optical audio input so I got a usb device with optical audio in. Here is the problem that I'm having. I can get the sound to play through the speakers using vlc but there is quite a bit of latency. I've looked into using asio4all to try and eliminate the latency problem but I can't find a program that will let me use asio while directly playing the sound from my optical audio input. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to either eliminate the latency in vlc or a program that I could use to directly play the input either without lag or using asio to try and eliminate it. Anyone have any ideas?

A:Using PC as a stereo receiver

Hmmm, I would probably look for an audio card with a digital optical input and bypass the USB conversion.

Today i went to buy a laptop, Dell 7567 to be precise . I wanted an i7700hq processor equipped one. But when i checked the specification on the box it was written ' 4 core 1 way cpu' what does this mean? How is this different from 8 way cpu and it was also written on the box that the laptop shouldnt be used beyond 55mins of continuous usage.. am i buying the right product?

A:1 way cpu processing vs 8 way cpu processing

I have never heard of a laptop having a time limit. But they do get hot after awhile so maybe it has limited cooling?

4Core 1Way, I would take that to mean it has a SINGLE, QUAD CORE CHIP/CPU.

An "8way" is likely referring to a 8core CPU.

Hi everybody, I'm new to this forum. I have a performance issue with my HP Presario C700 Notebook, which runs Windows Vista Home Premium. Lately the system has been processing slow on and off the Internet. Sometimes if I have Firefox open while loading another page, it will freeze and not respond for 5 or more minutes. It occurs somewhat frequently and sometimes I just end up shutting off the power and restarting the computer. I keep it very clean, run a firewall, anti-virus, and install system updates on a regular basis. Do I need more RAM maybe? I'm currently running on 1Gb and I use my laptop for just about everything like online gaming, web development, music, video, images, and Internet. Any suggestions would be great.

A:Processing Issue

1gB of RAM just isn't sufficient for mature Vista systems - I recommend a minimum of 2 gB, with 4 gB being optimum.

If that doesn't speed it up enough for you, I'd suggest backing up your stuff and reinstalling Windows. There's nothing like the smell of a fresh copy of Windows in the morning! :0)

Hi and welcome to TSF.

You request is not really clear and I'm tempted to close this thread - we do not assist with password cracking/breaking or otherwise trying to get around passwords, which is the impression I get from your post.

If you can explain in more detail what you are trying to do, it would help. Otherwise this thread will be closed.

Okay, I am having some problems with one of the machines on my network. The system is a 500mhz celron which like every other system on my network runs XP. We have had XP running since shortly after it came out, and this problem started just with in the last 2 months. Problem is:

When using multimedia applications, the CPU almost 'studders' constantly. Even if you play an audio CD off of the CD rom, or MP3 off the hard drive, watch a movie off the HD, whatever. The first thought in my mind is that the CPU has too much stuff going at once, however if you bring up the task manager the system idle process is taking 50-60. I can even go into the task manager and set the priority for the media app. to realtime and it helps very little. The system has 192megs of RAM, this should not be a problem.

I have tried all sorts of things from running Norton, cleaning the CD rom, checking the ram, etc.. I am at a total loss at this point. Especially since it never did this before, and trust me, it's not like the machine has never been used to this extent. I know it's old and all, but playing CD's even?

I hope someone out there has some good advice, I need it this time.

Thanks for reading this thread. My computer has been acting up in a strange way. When I start it up, it will run for a while and then I will hear a click (the same click i have heard when a blue screen appears) and the red light on the front will freeze in whatever state it is in and the computer will not process or do anything until a few minutes later when it clicks again and returns to normal function. It also freezes starting up sometimes and may take 5 or more tries to start it. It has been having problems for a while, but I think the clicking and processing freezes began since i plugged a usb external hard drive into the internal sata port. One time i got mad and tried connecting it to the sata port while the computer was running (rage causes me to do stupid things ha) and i got a blue screen error and ever since then the clicking has been occuring.

I know its a strange problem, but any ideas as to what could cause this?

Here I am with this super-nifty computer thingy and I can't install a simple $15 webcam...

4096MB system memory
1000GB hard drive
Blu-ray/HD DVD
NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GT

Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit SP1)

The problem seems to be that there are NO inexpensive webcams that operate in a 64-bit environment...? Is that the case? Am I doomed to be faceless on Facebook? Are my poor grandchildren not going to see their doting Grandpa except in person? Woe is me.

Or, is there a fix? Some cute little drivers or something out there that I can install. Or perhaps a tweak that can let me stream a little live video, or capture some live video?

Please help...

Hello again. Have installed word 97. Am new at these programs and have had no formal real formal training, just about an hour at my place of work. We were given a project to do which I did get completed. Until I have been able to work this a while longer, I need to ask a question if this is the right spot. I try to put a border around the whole page so that it can be printed with the border completeley around all four sides. When I add the border from borders and shading it shows all 4 sides covered, however, when I do a print preview it shows the border only at the top and down the sides. no line appears at the bottom. Some times it will show only the border down the side. Have used their help area and what ever I try still does not put the border line at the bottom so that it can be printed as a four sided border. If any ony can give me some idea how to accomplish the missing border lines it would be greatley apprecaited. While I know this is not a technical question I thought someone on board proably had good experience on this. Thanks to anyone who will reply.

Are there any scripts out there that I can look at / use to get a grasp of how this is processed?

I guess my first instinct would to run ccleaner, and clean up the registry as well as the cleaner option for temp files.

Ccleaner can be downloaded here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

I would also download and perform a quick scan in malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes can be found here: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyte...-10804572.html

Thats just to get started. Does Internet Explorer do the same thing? How about Safari or Chrome?

I used Microsoft Works which came with my computer to type some stuff up. Worked perfectly.

I then installed Microsoft Office 2000 Professional edition. I did not use Word immediately but other programs worked fine.

The other night I attempted to try and use Word and found that it would load and then crash. I reinstaleld Office sometime later and the problem still persists. When Word loads, everything appears to be great, then approx. 5 seconds after loading, the error appears. Before the error appears, I can try to type something, but then the error appears, again, after the 5 seconds; even if you leave it sitting the error will still appear. Below is the image of the error:

http://www.planetubh.com/core/permtemp/worderror001.jpg

I then attempted to use Microsoft Works, and I get the exact same kind of error for Works' word processor.

I then tried to use Wordpad even, and I get the same kind of error.

All other programs work perfect and I have no problems. Except that these three word processing programs are giving me a problem. If anyone could assist before this upcoming Saturday, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi and welcome to techguy.

The circle you speak of is nothing to worry about. Its just Windows 7's way of telling you that the task is being performed in much the same way as you would have seen the hour glass symbol in XP.

The system denied write access message is also nothing to worry about, its perfectly normal to get that message running HijackThis and should be ignored.

What happened when you ran MBAM?

If there is any other reason why you think you may be infected, please click the link below and follow the instructions.

I suspect that, at least presently, you'll struggle to get anything that runs on the client computer. HTML5 may be offering some hope in that regard, but not all browsers even support reading files from the local hard disk, much less writing them.
The only way I know to save the results of a form are to upload them to a web server, which may give them back (after a bit of PHP processing) as a file to be downloaded.

Turned on pc this morning as it had turned itself off. PC kept shutting down itself. It gets to nvram then nothing - turning itself off. Windows XP was on it for reference

Left it a while then turned it on again. - NO signal from the monitor. The fan goes on but nothing after that. NO BEEPS. The monitor is powered by the PC itself so it can`t be the power supply. I am unable to play around with the motherboard as i only know software not hardware. The video and audio is built into the Motherboard so can`t play around with that. Tried removing components but no joy.

Has anyone any ideas as i don`t want to go out and buy a new motherboard if that isn`t the problem. Everything else powers up - but not the components attached to the motherboard.

Any ideas would be more than welcome. Using collegues pc at the moment. So I`ll be checking this on a daily basis if someone wants to offer some guidance as to my next step.

Since you are the only one who knows what you want running on your machine. You have to determine this for yourself. At he very top of this page and every page are tabs. Two of which will be quite useful to decipher this table for yourself. click on the 'Startup List' Tab, there is a dialog box. Enter each item in there and it will tell you what that entry is. You decide if you need it or not. If it does not find that entry save it and when you have a few that might not be found. Then go to the 'File Database' Tab. these entries not found in start up, you can then further research here. After you have determined which ones you need and which ones you don't need. Start a new topic in the appropriate OS forum and we can help you from there. But do this only after you have done your research and found out what each item is for yourself.

and i can't install norton systemwork in safe mode..and when i am in normal mode..it wouldn't let me run anything(probably something is taking up all the processing power)...

can someone shine some light on how to resolve this? I can't do system restore cuase he turn it off!!! don't want to reformat the whole hard drive...is there any freeware or shareware virus scanning utility that will allow me to scan booting into the cd-rom drive? Thanks all..btw, he running XP Home...thanks all

Sounds like spyware. I doubt you'll be able to load anything new while this spyware is loaded. You can try to start in Safe Mode with Networking and load an anti-spyware program. One I use that is good and free is Spybot Search and Destroy. You can get it at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

If you aren't able to start in safe mode with networking, or install the spybot software, another (albeit slow) method is to boot normally and press CTL-AL-DEL quickly to display Task Manager. Look at the process tab to see what's running. You can post the list here for help on what's not normal. Then you can boot into safe mode an delete the offending software.

I've turned off a lot of crap in the StartUp menu, defragged, let the system manage virtual memory, yet my system is running quite slow. (The largest two supplemental processes running are Spy Sweeper and AVG.) I suspect I need more memory, since it appears to be absolutely wearing out the hard drive when using most programs. Here are the specifics:

IBM Thinkpad R40
XP-SP2 V5.1
BIOS: 1210/1PET53WW(1.21)
Pentium M 1300 MHZ
CPU Speed: 1024
Video Memory: 32 MB
MEMORY: Total-510, Free-32, Used-478, Load-93%
HD: Total-33.9, Free-7.6, Used-26.3

If memory is indeed the issue, I've never upgraded Laptop memory and don't really know where to get it and how difficult it is to install. Thanks in advance for your valued advice!!!

yes, i would add more ram to that but also a spring clean of the comp might help, http://www.kickenhardware.net/forum/showthread.php?t=3835 then a quick checkup at security here.

So word processing application are you using? Or do you use?

I use OpenOffice.org a little more simpler than word, however I'm still trying to find where some stuff went (like heading).

A:Word Processing

While I have MS Office on my computer, I prefer and regularly use OO.o, which I find even better than Word for almost all tasks. For Yanowhiz, here is a tutorial that might help you:http://documentation.openoffice.org/HOW_TO...writer1_EN.htmlAt one time, I was perplexed at the lack of real documention for OO.o, though it was similar enough to MS Office that I could manage; more recently, perhaps because of the new version to be released soon, the documentation has greaty increased. I have over 75 processing running in Task Manager, and my machine is really slow.  Am I infected?  Is someone else using my computer?  This seems like an awful lot of processes.

A:75 Processing Running

Hope you are sitting down - I just opened my task manger and it shows that I have 94 processes running. I don't think that the 'really slow' is connected to just 74 processes. A infection is always possible - they are a mater of 'when' not 'if'. When you look at the Applications' tab of task manager are there any applications running that you didn't start or want running?
What is your security software, is it current and have you run any scans lately like this evening]?
Keep us posted

Several times a day, the processing light on my laptop would just flash up randomly as if it's really busy doing something. While this is happening, sometimes I can still click on other windows that are already open, sometimes the cursor turns into the hour glass-like icon, and sometimes the computer completely freezes and I can't even move the cursor at all. I can't open up new programs while this is happening. This can last from less than a minute to up to around 5 minutes until it somehow finishes whatever it was doing and goes back to normal and any programs I tried to open while it was "processing" will now open up.

I don't think it's any kind of malicious programs on my computer because this is a problem I've had ever since I first got the computer. The laptop's operating system was originally windows vista, but I reformatted the computer and did a clean install when I upgraded to windows 7 and I still have the problem (thought for sure that was gonna work). I run virus and spyware scans I defrag and clean the registry on the computer regularly. I'm just starting to think it's a hardware problem maybe. What do you guys think? Can you think of anything else I should do?

PS. Some people have told me that cleaning the registry can cause problems, however, I've been having the problems since before I've started to clean the registry.

Hi There

I recently got onto my mothers computer and things are running really slowly. not 100% its a virus or malware. Video clips on the hard drive/internet are not running smoothly. The GMER took almost like 3 hrs to complete. I have already run spybot scan with no results. Would be really grateful if someone could have a look at my logs for anything unusual.

Cheers
Maurice

Advise what's listed in the Computer: section in the bottom of the "General" tab - EXACTLY as you see it there.

Hi, I have a lenovo Thinkpad t420, i was working fine but now for the past few days, it started processing endlessly at every 3secs, everything else works fine other than my entertainment, i can't watch a movie coz it keeps breaking every 3 secs as the processor becomes so busy and my best game fifa12 can pause just before i score a goal......how can i solve this dilemma? During idle time (all programs closed) CPU usage never goes above 3% but RAM is at 48% as the processor keeps getting busy every 3 seconds.

Advice is always good so I will ask..Currently running a Intel core2 duo e6300 and want to upgrade rather than overclock (a little scary) since my Intel D975XBX2 motherboard will not support some of the newest processors but will go as high as at least the Q6600 (cuz I don't have a grand to throw out there on a QX6800).. Will I see a major improvement with the q6600 or would I be better with a faster dual core like a e6700.. As always Thanks for the responses

A:More processing power

Hi

Probably not really....unless the programs you're using are optimized to make use of all 4 cores, you probably won't see a big difference. Many people don't understand why that is, but here's a little reading material on this. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/page/cpu/all

You will see some improvements on general computing simply because the clock is higher and more cores to work on things, but on the whole it may not be all you think it will be. Reading some of the articles on that Hardware Secrets - CPU page may help and there are comparison charts there as well on all Core 2 Duo and Quad core chips.

Okay, I posted this log this morning, got home from work, and my log is nowhere in sight....the post is GONE. So, I'm trying again...hope this one sticks!Over the last week or so, my PC seems to hit spells of "never-ending processing." For example, when I first went to the computer this morning, it was in sleep/screen saver mode. I hit a key to "wake it up," but it started spinning/processing and after 20 min., it still had not stopped. Opening task manager didn't work, and I couldn't reboot from the machine. So, I did a power down and rebooted. Once it was rebooted, it seemed to be okay.I guess what I'm trying to find out is what is causing the endless looping or what the heck is running in my PC that can't be stopped and is hogging it. When I run Smart Ram (w/Advanced System Care), it sometimes shows my "free physical" in the "red" zone, even right now, it is showing it at only 619.I went ahead and ran HJT to see if you can spot anything that might be lurking and causing so much trouble or tying up of my machine. I also have a few anti-spyware programs on here, which I am sure are slowing things down a little bit. Can you scan my log and see if there is anything that shouldn't be there?
