Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

Q: Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

it's possible that Office was installed improperly, i cannot open any other non Windows app, they all open to Office Word. is this a virus?
System Restore opens to Office, Control Panel works normally. How can I fix this?

Preferred Solution: Office 2010- the other apps have Word icons and open to Office.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

A:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.

Okay, I've never posted on anything like this before so bear with me please. I've got an issue and it's driving me nuts because I can't resolve it. I'll try and give a description of what I did. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I purchased a new Dell computer (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) that came with a trial version of Office 2010. I had previously purchased an Office 2010 Pro so I wanted to install the full version on my computer. When I did, I had both versions installed, so I uninstalled the trial version. That's when I think my problem arose, but I can't say for sure that it didn't exist before that because I hadn't even looked.

Here's the problem:
When I'm in Windows Explorer looking at my files, my Excel and Word files (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx) show up with an improper file type description. Instead of saying "Microsoft Word Document" or "Microsoft Excel 1997-2003 Worksheet" (or whatever they're supposed to say) the simply say "DOCX File" or "XLS File". Not only that, but the icons don't look right either. They sort of look right, but they're smaller and sort of greyed out (Except the .docx icon is just a white page with lines object).

The strange thing is, is that ALL my other Office files show up with correct descriptions and icons etc. (.ppt, .pptx, .csv....etc - ALL of them!)

What I've tried to fix it:
I uninstalled all Office Products and then reinstalled Office 2010.

I tried MS's little bug finder pr... Read more

On Microsoft Word 2010, when you go to either the Open or Save as dialog boxes, you see a folder tree called "Microsoft Word", under which in my computer has Templates. In Microsoft Excel, it has a similar affect, showing "Microsoft Excel". I want to remove this tree from view, and ONLY want to see "Computer" (or "This PC" on Windows 8.1). Is this possible, and if so, how?

Can this be done locally and/or through group policy?

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

I have a client that has Office 365. They have two people with this issue. It's not really a huge problem but more as an annoyance. Whenever they go to open a document through an Office product (Word/Excel: File>Open>Computer>Browse) the documents appear but they're missing the icons next to their name. There's barely any information on it when Googling this and they all seem to lead to dead ends for us. I have ran a repair on Office, re-installed office, recreated Windows icons, and opened the programs in Safe Mode to no avail. No Add-Ins are causing the issue. We are wanting to up-grade our current Office suite Office 2003 to either Office 2010 or Office 2013.  Our PC's are running Windows 7
I would just like to know what peoples opinions and advice is on this?

A:Up-grade from Office 2003 to Office 2010 or Office 2013

I can't speak to Office 2013, but I've done numerous upgrades to Office through 2010.  When you install the new version, you have the option to keep the old version or just replace it.  Starting with Office 2007 the familiar menu bar has been replaced with the ribbons which take a lot of getting used to for folks used to older versions.  There's a little program called UbitMenu that will add most of the menu bar functions back in the 2007 and 2010 versions that a lot of folks find helpful.  If you do opt to have two different versions installed at the same time, what happens is that when you switch from one to the other, it goes through a juggling act that takes a minute or so.  It's a bit of a pain, but if you need it, it could be a convenience.
Good luck.

For some reason, I can't get any of the Office 2010 programs to pin to the taskbar on Windows 7 Home Premium. When the program is running, the jumplist has no button to pin the program. If I go into the Start Menu and hit Pin to Taskbar from there, it gives me a working shortcut on the taskbar, but the program creates a new taskbar button when it launches, completely ignoring the one that's already there.

Even stranger, I don't have this problem on my other computer running Win 7 Pro.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

In office 2k, I was able to modify my icons to make it more identifiable from others, i.e., I could make a macro, assign an icon and then change the icon color or draw a symbol on it. I have been unable to find a way to do ths in Office 2010. am I missing something or did they remove that option altogether?

A:Office 2010 Icons

Hi Patrick 67, welcome to the forum,

Did you modify existing icons. Or create new ones?
Are you talking about MS application file icons or folder icons?

I am using MS Paint (copied from XP OS and am using it in Win7) to create new icons (BMP) and then using a web based file converter to convert BMP to ICO files.
I find the MS-Paint (from XP) is better suited to pixel building than the Win7 version of paint.
But there are several icon apps on the web. I never bothered because they were commercial and my requirements were very minimal. I could not justify the cost.

BMP building is rather tedious but it does work.

What OS are you using? Snipping tool in Win7/8 is very handy for copying images as PNG then open in paint to save as BMP if you want to modify pixels. Then the web-based converter from BMP to ICO.
The web-based converter will also do PNG to ICO.

Let me know how you get on.
NOTE my avatar was a snipped PNG file of an image which I touched up and changed colors in BMP format.

First of all, hi, this is my first post here. I have a major problem. My Office 2010 icons are missing. I checked the internet for solutions and none worked and right now i have two options, manually uninstall office 2010 (which i rather won't because last time i had to reinstall the os because of that) and manually copying the c:\windows:\installer\{} folder.

I changed a lot of icons and after changing an icon or something my office icons were gone (along with a couple others) and after checking i saw that it was because the folders in c:\windows:\installer were somehow deleted. So what i ask you is please upload and send me the C:\Windows\Installer\{90140000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE} if you have Office 2010 (professional plus) so i can have my icons back again. Please. Thank you!!

P.S: Repair or uninstall doesn't work, deleting and creating an icon cache doesn't work.

Hey guys, This is my first post so if i screw up let me know... this has happened now several times... The first time was when i downloaded my webcam driver from Microsoft, i have a Microsoft VX-3000. BTW i am using Windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I solved it by getting angry backing up and reformatting.

I should explain myself a bit, I am using the Office 2010 Official Beta that i downloaded from the microsoft website.

When I install My webcam driver (this happened again the second time when i install Wizards of the Coast Character Builder) Many of my icons disappear.

Adobe Reader, Skype, Steam, windows live messenger, All my office icons and iTunes

Now normally i just go into Add/Remove and just repair the program and the Icons come back, but for office, they are not... First off when i repair it says the repair failed, when i try to remove or add/remove option, i get the same thing... I was told this is because i am missing the office folder in C:/windows/installer/

Now i have tried one reformating and repairing... it work... but now it won't work... 3rd time it has happened.

I am at the point were system reformat seems like my only option left... what do you guys think, what can i do, i was thinking of installing it on a new harddrive and copying the installer folder and just bringing it back to this harddrive.

btw this is what i get as missing icons (attachement)

If any of you know whats up help you be greatly appreciated

I am a novice at this and I have searched and searched over the last week trying to figure out a fix to this.

This occurs in 4 different cells.

Code that I have used for other issues looks something like this, however, the below example is what I'm trying to accomplish:

Sub TIME()

Have you ever had a previous version of Office on this copy of win7?

Do you have any component of a previous office suite installed still

I have seen this in the past with Viso that was due to remnents of an earlier trial remaining on disk and in the registry.

I also found that if I cancelled the configuration screen the Viso would load without problems without the need to wait for completion.

There are some rather involved solution stems on Microsoft website - cannot find them at the present but will try to look for them.

The problem was that I could never get the removal steps to actually cure the issue and I put up with the error until my next re-install of Win7, which was not to long in the case of that system

I don't know if maybe I'm the only one who runs into this problem or if it happens to a lot of people, but it seems to come up a lot for me.

Office 2016 Installation Routine Deleting Older Stand-alone Apps

I can't say I wasn't warned. I was part way through installing Microsoft Office 2016 on my primary workstation when I got a message that said, "Stop, you should wait to install Office 2016." The error message went on to say that if I decided to continue anyway, my copy of Microsoft Visio Standard 2013 would be removed. Since I had the original disk from when I purchased the software, I went ahead. Bad move. It turns out that when Microsoft says that Visio 2013 won't work with Office 2016, it means it won't even have the chance to work. Any attempt to reinstall the software will be thwarted. The fact that you paid for the software is beside the point. You're basically out of luck. When I went to the Microsoft community forums, which is where Microsoft handles much of its tech support, I discovered that I wasn't alone. Apparently hundreds of people who'd purchased stand-alone Microsoft Office products were affected, and they weren't happy about it.

Furthermore, the problem extended far beyond Visio. Users with Microsoft Project, Publisher, Access, InfoPath and SharePoint Designer were also affected. Likewise, Microsoft customers who purchased Office Apps that are normally part of Office suites but may have been purchased separately, such as Outlook 2013, were also affected.

Try to convert XPS to a DOC* format is a complicated OCR task, same as trying to take a picture of an old newspaper and then trying to scan and make it editable in Word.

You need something like ABBYY FineReader 11 Professional Edition
It keeps original formatting as much as possible.

When ever I click on an Office (.doc) file or an Excel (.xls) file they take about 20 or 30 seconds to open, the same when I try to close. Also if I right click to delete one of those files, it takes forever to get the popup window to delete or what ever I would like to do. I have read over and over again this has to do with Outlook, which I do not have or use. Any Ideas?? I have run adware, spybot, spyware blaster, AVG and AVAST virus. NO HELP :

I have send some times before for serious problems and your help was amazing!!
This time I have a silly problem but it really gets on my nerves...
So, I bought a new laptop with vista and one day I wanted to open a .doc file. I didn't know that in vista you can't open docs without having ms office. when i saw the icon of the uknown application i did right click and open with wordpad. the icon took the shape of a blank paper with the icon of wordpad in the middle. as usually happens when you choose to open a file with a different application. Today I installed ms office 2003 and the the icon is a blank paper with the W in the middle, like the icon of ms word application. I want to retrieve the correct icon. I tried to delete the iconcache.db and restart but nothing happened. Please don't suggest something like right click open with or default programs...I tried them all, unless you have something serious that helps. I have good knowledge of computers so please only serious help.
Thank you a lot.
PS. I m sorry if i send to the wrong category I didn't find a category for ms office.

One of my systems (out of four) that all have recently ( about 3 weeks back) been completely reloaded for Office 365 including a full run of the MS uninstaller app first, now has a feature that many people have asked for but MS has yet to restore. On this one system spellcheck works in a way I have never seen and I would LOVE to get the same functionality onto the other systems if possible.

In our office, ONE other person out of 30 also seems to have lucked out and gotten the same setup but no one else has.
This is Office 365 Business installing the 2016 App package. All users have the same option which is Office Insider Slow.
Ver. 1610 build 7466.2023. The spellcheck feature I am seeing like this is in the desktop software not the Cloud version.

On the one "special" copy Spellcheck has become a much More useful and handy option. Any misspelled word is underlined in the usual red squiggly line but after that, right clicking it brings up many new options to correct.

It has the usual suggested correct spellings - but - now each of them is accompanied by a short dictionary-like definition of the word when spelled that way. PLUS they each have another black arrow that if clicked offers to read the word aloud and more important offers to make that spelling of the word into an Auto-correct option.. Right There!. No need to jump through all the usual hoops to get it added.

This same 'feature' also works in Word and all the other Office Desktop Apps on that o... Read more

Got a little other problem though, and don't want to start a new topic so I don't clutter your forums.
A few days ago I installed a MS Office 2010 language pack, and suddenly a lot of my programs icons just resetted Even though they don't have anything to do with Office 2010. Is that possible?

Some programs that did change can be seen in the attachments.

All the Office programs changed their icon too.

A:Icons changed after installing MS Office 2010 language pack

Okay, I did a quick Google and came up with this tutorial. I tried both methods but it didn't work. All the icons have changed though, this is how they look now.

Still not okay though, I really wonder how to fix this, next to a System Restore....

Have Office 2010. Cannot figure out how to add/change/delete email icons on left side of email page. For example somehow I have two identical email addess's with all the buttons under each one. One of them does not really work. How do I delete the entire email address set of icons because I have a duplicate email set of icons just below it.
The one that does work does not have a "deleted items" icon under the inbox. When I delete them they just disappear. I needed to retrieve one I deleted but couldnt find it.

Help---how do I manage these icons?

A:Creating/Deleting/Management of Email Icons in Office 2010

You probably have to data files set up by accident. Go to File > Data File Management. If there are 2 pst or data files listed there remove the one you don't need. You could rename one of them first and then go back in your email to see if it is the correct one to delete.

Ironically, I just found the solution that fixed my problem! I will share it, so anyone else having this problem can resolve it just as easily.

Start Menu > Type "winword /r" into the Search Bar > Press Enter, and allow the installation wizard to complete. Done! Problem solved!

I have scoured the internet for the past week, trying to find a solution. I have tried every solution through Google, including Brink's IconCache reset. Nothing has resulted in a solution.

I am at my wit's end. I have tried the system restore, deleting the IconCache.db (and rebooting), resetting the default program settings, trying to repair it (nothing happens, starts up and just closes) changing this and that, and nothing has worked.

I see the icons in the /ProgramFiles(x64), but nothing in the regular program files. This issue happened out of nowhere. The unfortunate part is we do not have the disc in order to re-install the programs (Microsoft Office Standard 2010), because as this is a work computer only the corporate office has discs and we're on our own with this problem.

I would really appreciate some help. Feeling frustrated with this whole issue, and I'm hoping I can get a working solution.

I attached some images below. Hope they can help figure this out. Thank you.

PS. The only reason one of those icons has a working icon is because I changed the icon through properties, but it didn't do anything else to the other file types. I really don't want ... Read more

I understand that if a user installs Open Office on a machine with conventional Office 97-2003 that Open Office will use its own suite of products for each application. (Unless the user ops to use Office to open the applications by unchecking the corresponding application boxes during Open Office's installation.) But if a user chooses Open Office as the default for applications on a system that also has Office 2007 on it, how does Open Office deal with this if the OO applications remain checked as the default?

Does the current version of OO even understand how to DEAL with the new Office 2007? I understand that OO can not read docx documents, which is the default for Word 2007, (although this can be easily changed back to doc.) I found out that Open Office 3.0, scheduled for release this fall, will be able to read docx documents. What's so great about docx docs anyway?

Using my example, assume this situation on a new Windows Vista machine. (fresh installs of each program or Office 2007 OEM (factory installed.) What behavior would be expected here?

how can i uninstall microsoft word 2002 without using add remove programmes. i get this error message when i try to use add/remove "this path package could not be opened. verify that the path package exists and that you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package"

i am running xp service pack 3

this started because i have bought microsoft office 2010 & during the instillation it requires you to uninstall any old possibly conflictiong programmes. it highlighted word 2002 as being an issue but it seems some of its components are missing so i am unable to remove it fully or re-install it using the instillation cd.

is it possible to remove the parts of it that are remaining on my computer & are conflicting with the newer version of office? i have searched the net & there doesnt seem to be any way to do this most stuff guides you back to add/remove programmes.

please help thanks

A:how can i uninstall word 2002 manually in xp so i can run office 2010

Scroll down and download the free version of this and install it.
Run the program and select word from the list and uninstall.
Select advanced for the uninstall.
It will run the uninstaller first,so you will probably get the same error.
Continue and it will search for files related to the program to delete.
Delete them.
Continue and it will look for registry entries to delete.
Double check those to make sure they belong to word and
delete the ones that do.
Then finish and restart the computer.

Download Free Chemistry Add-in for Office Word 2010 and 2007.

Citing the need to support the ability of chemists to communicate in their discipline-specific language as essential to scientific research, Microsoft has made available for download a free add-in for the 2010 and 2007 flavors of Office Word. Dubbed informally Chem4Word, the add-in was developed by Microsoft Research and the Unilever Centre for Molecular Science Informatics at the University of Cambridge, and was released at the American Chemical Society?s Spring 2010 National Meeting & Exposition. Alex Wade, director for Scholarly Communication, Microsoft Research, explained that the Word extension was capable of supporting specific symbols across technologies and file formats, and streamlining authoring and semantic annotation.

I finally upgraded from MS Office 2002 to Office 2010, and all of my Word documents were automatically converted to wps files. In addition, when I download Word documents not created in Word 2010, they default to wps files. I can work around the problem manually to pull up older Word files in new Word, but it's incredibly annoying that any workaround is necessary. (Incidentally, when I try using the "open as" box with downloaded files, Word 2010 does not appear as one of the options.) I've been using Word for many years and have no need or desire to switch to MS Works. Please advise!

How to open a Works 6.0, a Works 7.0, a Works 8.0, or a Works 9.0 word processing document in Word

Method 2: If you do not have Microsoft Works installed on your computer

If you have a Works document (.wps) that you want to open and you do not have Works installed, you can still use Word to open the file. To do this, first use the Works 6-9 Converter in Word and then open the document directly in Word. Step 1: Download the Works 6-9 Converter

If you have previously installed Works on the same computer on which Word is installed, the Works 6-9 Converter is already installed and you can go on to step 2: "Open the Works document in Word."

If you have not previously installed Works on your computer, you must download the Works 6-9 Converter in order to open the document in Word. To download the Works 6-9 Converter, follow these steps:If it is open, close Microsoft Word.

In your Web browser, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Microsoft Works 6
Click Download. The File Download dialog box opens.
