Microsoft Office Files and PDF files corrupted?

Q: Microsoft Office Files and PDF files corrupted?

OS: Windows XP
Running: Microsoft Office 2003 and Adobe Acrobat 8

I am unable to open all Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access files also PDF files. When I try to open a Word document I get an error message like "Word experienced an error trying to open the file". I can open Word files with WordPad but most of is garbage. Where I can find a chunk of legible text I recognize, this keeps popping up [email protected]~ . I tried taking the document to another computer and opening but with same result. I am at a loss. I have tried a few recovery software (demo versions) but they keep giving me the data I see in Wordpad.

Same type of error for Excel, Access, PowerPoint and PDF files. Also cannot open these files on another computer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Microsoft Office Files and PDF files corrupted?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi tonedef -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Auto-Select", the selected code returns itself to "Japanese" with the display as already noted above. On returning to the "Other encoding" option and trying "Western European (Windows)", the display reverts to the Windows Default style as already noted above, lines of xxxxxxx. Hi everyone!
Could someone inform software that are proven, can recover corrupted Office files.
Remembering that even using the Office 2013, could not correct them.
Grateful for the attention!

A:Corrupted files Office - How to recover them

Well...files which are corrupted are damaged...there is no guarantee or expectation that can undo that.
Typically, if the files are program or system files...the user can uninstall/reinstall the application or run the Windows tools which attempt to deal with file corruption.
If the files are data files used by a given program...IME, the only tool available that may work would be the chkdsk /r command.
Data-recovery software is pretty much designed to copy files which are otherwise inaccessible...it cannot repair corrupt/damaged files.  At best, it will copy those files to a new location.
I'm curious as to how you know that the files are damaged...and what type of files are they?

A:How to repair corrupted office and PDF files ?

Sorry you are having issues!
Honestly I am not sure, so this is just an idea...check the extension of the files and make sure they are still .pdf and .ppt or .doc. Sometimes when you are having issues, something could cause a change in the name of the file extension, and it will not open or if it is open, you are not able to save it (I had this happen yesterday in PowerPoint and something changed the file to a template extension .potx instead of .ppt).
After closing the application (Office or Adobe or other program), I would locate the file and check it has the right extension, and if not--change it manually. Sometimes changing the name of the file itself helps the application open it, so change the name of the file and/or extension if it is wrong and change the file name, then right click and attempt to Open With the correct program.

Hi, I had office 2010, but then tried a trial version of Office 2013, as it was running out I downloaded an old version of Office XP back onto my computer but it has corrupted all my word files so that they are all now wordpad files and will not open in word at all. If I try to open them in word I get the message that it is 'not a valid Win32 app'

I have gone back to the trial office 2013 for now, but the problem remains.

Even if I produce a new word doc, it still saves as a wordpad file and will not open with word.

It also does the same for my Excel files. Powerpoint seems to run ok for some reason.

Ok, well up until yesterday my father was using Office 2000 with Microsoft binder for work. He just got a new laptop for work and he's got Office 2007 installed. From the looks of Microsoft's site it states that 'Microsoft Unbind is not included with Office 2007.' Looks like what I really need is Microsoft Binder from Office 2000. Is there a place I can download it (legally) or purchase it? He literally has thousands of binder files (*.obd) that he needs to be able to access. I've tried searching with nothing turning up.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

A:Microsoft Office Binder (*.obd files) with Office 2007?

So further searching turned up that Unbind for Office XP/2003 is just a waste of time for Office 2007 and no point in looking further into that.

So then I found this:

Which seems to me if I can track down a Office 2000 disc I should be able to install JUST Binder 2000. Results show that it works along side Office XP/2003 so I don't see why it wouldn't with Office 2007. It would only be used to unbind old files, not create new ones.

If anyone has any other thoughts that would be great.
I'll look into what I wrote above tomorrow and post back with the results if need be.

One of the steps to fix the "Can't create recovery medium" is to check for system file corruption.
Just out of curiosity I ran an SFC /SCANNOW and it reported "Windows Resource Protection found corrupted files but was unable to fix some of them. ..." If SFC doesn't run through without an error on a brand new system, when then?

This so ridiculous! The only thing that ever ran on that system was a windows update right after doing the initial setup.
But I doubt that there is really anything foul on the system since I have that exact same report on about 4 other systems as well (some old, some new). SFC ALWAYS finds some "corrupted files" that it is unable to fix and so I know by now that this entire mechanism is just a PoS and a waste of time!

MS - get your act together! You constantly introduce mechanisms into Windows that might be originally well-intended but don't work. Why don't you at least removed those once you know they are useless? And even worse: why is this SFC /SCANNOW part of almost every advice one can find in the knowledge base if that mechanism is since years well known to not help or fix anything?

I have Win 7 on one hard drive and Win XP on a second hard drive. I can boot to either and have access to both drives. This allows me to not to have duplicate files for each operating system.

I have MS Office 2003 installed on both Win 7 and Win XP. Over the years I have generated several hundred word.doc and excel.xls files. Here comes the weird part .

I rarely now boot into Win XP and at times I want to update my word or excel files in Win 7. When I open either .doc or .xls file, they open as "read only". I have checked the options in both programs neither are set to open as "read only".

I can edit the files but when I go to save them, the only way it will save is "Copy of". This is a pain.

If I boot into Win XP and try to modify these files, it does not matter which OS was used to generate the file, I can edit and save normally. This sort of tells me that it has something to do with Win 7, but I am not sure what it might be.

I was hoping someone may have some insight into how to get around this.

I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!

Microsoft Office 2003 users who have protected their documents with the Rights Management Service (RMS) are finding themselves locked out of said files. Microsoft has released a fix for the embarrassing issue.
On Friday, Microsoft issued a warning that as of December 11, 2009, customers using Microsoft Office 2003 have been unable to open or save Office 2003 documents protected with the Rights Management Service (RMS). On Saturday, the software giant released the following hotfixes for the issue: Office Client (KB978551), Word Viewer (KB978558), and Excel Viewer (KB978557). Office 2003 SP3 is required, though Microsoft recommends that only users who are experiencing the problem install the updates.

Hello Community,

I'm having an issue here, and reading through threads and forum posts - i'm getting nowhere.

I get no error messages when trying to open a file from a mapped drive.

I have a user onsite unable to open any Mircosoft Office 2013 files from any of his mapped network drives. If he takes the files, copies them locally to his laptop, then open perfectly fine. However, if i try to open a office file from their mapped drive, it just opens up a blank document.

--I've tried repairing Microsoft Office, still no luck.

I don't want to uninstall office, then re-install as i will have to drop the computer off our domain (Group Policy for some reason, blocks office.) *I'd prefer this to be the final option.

Surely there must be a fix around? Much thanks!

I have a virus problem. All the time a window appears that says:

"Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP files corrupted. Your personal data at the reach of everyone's hand. History records and other personal information [...] easily reachable. Download protection software now!
Click OK to download the antispyware (Recommended)"
Of course I didn't cklick OK, I perfomed a scan by Antivir, Spybot Search&Destroy and Adaware, but the problem isn't solved.

Could somebody help me?

I found a similar help request on this page and therefore did a system scan via HijackThis.

Hello all,

My copy of Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my laptop has been having some strange issues lately. I cannot run .msi files, and device manager never populates a full list. Sometimes (rarely, but it does repeat) Windows Explorer will freeze, and if I attempt to close it and reopen it using task manager, the UI reloads, but whenever I click on a folder it claims Windows cannot load explorer. Restarting fixes that. I scheduled and ran CHKDSK, and it repaired a few bad sectors, but it didn't fix any of these problems. I have run CCleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry fixer) and defragmented my hard drive until it's only 1% fragmented. I then tried sfc /scannow, and it read a bunch of corrupted files but could not repair them. I read that to fix sfc, you must download and run Windows System Update Readiness Tool. It has been running and "Searching for Updates on this Computer" for about an hour now, and I'm getting concerned that it's just not doing anything. It's not frozen, the bar keeps moving from left to right and I can click on and off of it. I also have the logs from sfc if anyone wants to take a look at them, they'll be attached. The computer isn't very old, and has an intel i3 and 4gb of ram. If you would like any extra information to help, please reply and I'll get back to you as fast as I can Any recommendations on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for any and all help!

A:Many corrupted Windows7 files, SFC reads corrupted data but doesnt fix

Hi Qujibo,
First comment you said ran ccleaner REGISTRY cleaner, this is not advised, unless you know what your doing

If there is an UNDO backup from that utility RUN it.

SURT can quite easily run for a couple of hours.

There are a lot of Winsxs errors in your log.

AFTER surt has run

run the MXdiag report from this link
Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

Was this OS only installed via sysprep a couple of days ago??

A:files gone and system files corrupted

Use the info in link below to trouble shoot and repair. You may want to first eliminate malware as the problem.
Boot Critical File Is Corrupt: Fix For Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1
To eliminate malware as the cause of the problem:
Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.
If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.
When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.
After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.
DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.

I just has a big issue with my computer at home and I had to backed everything up into a usb to make a clean install
now the usb shows the same three files in pretty much all folders and I can't erase them and I can't see the rest of the files that are supposed to be in those folders....

I've been trying to change attibutes but id doesn't let me...
now another weird thing is that one folder... apparently the first one in the tree with the issue, shows two "." and ".." folders...

I try to run chkdsk but I'm not sure under what option... and in every single folder it that those three files appear it says something like the first allocation unit is not valid and that the entry will be truncated.

Please help... I would really like to recover all my newborn pictures

A:corrupted files same three files in all folders, can't del

Always do backups, and always do some type of check later to see if the backuped data actually backed-up.

Sounds like the USB is kinda fried. They recommend that when you pull it from the computer, you're supposed to go down to the "safe uninstall" icon on the task bar on the right side first. Sometimes I don't bother. I would just put the computer to sleep for 5 secs, and remove the USB while it's asleep.

Did you already perform the clean install? If not, then the people at the major electronics chain- Tech service department can try to fish out the data for you. I would say the same thing for the USB, but IMO, there is less hope for that option.

So, I reformatted my computer again. Did some SFC scans before I installed any Microsoft updates and all scans were clean. Did all the updates, drivers, program installations. Couple days later I decide to check with SFC and found some errors. There's also errors at the source, meaning I can't replace them correct? This seems kind of stupid. Always having corrupted files no matter how many times I reformat.

Hi there,

I have installed microsoft office 07 when first getting my laptop late last year and have had no problem until today. I find this appearing on my laptop upon trying to open up any microsoft office program: Error 2330. Setup cannot get attirbutes for the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag\LISTS. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it.

When trying to open windows live messenger i get this message: The file or directory\Program files\common files\microsoft shared is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility and the same goes for trying to open winRAR and notepad.

I have tried to do the chkdsk utility but on cmd, was told access denied since i do not have sufficient privileges and need to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

I should also add that my sister was using my laptop today and told me that these error messages came up when she first opened the laptop and said that my log on was even corrupted! (Note: I normally put my laptop to sleep but when my sister opened it this morning it had restarted instead of just waking up as it normally does)

Sorry for the long post but i thought I should be as detailed as i can even though i know very little about computers...

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I need serious help. Something is deleting every file I attempt to download. I get the same message... " (file name) contained a virus and was deleted" enclosed in a box which also includes a red colored shield with a white "x" inside. After installing AutoCAD 2002 (packaged with Volo Express) my Microsoft Office XP has become

corrupted. I am sure this is caused by CAD because it is the second time it is happening.

The first time I had to format my harddrive.

The errors I get when starting the programs are as follows:
Word: Message "Compile error in hidden module: AutoExec"

Frontpage: Won't start. Keep on getting message box titled "I" with "Installing Frontpage

Features" after which an error message comes up stating that FP can't open.

Access: Opens OK but I can't get my modules to operate OK.

So bottom line is, I suspect by VBA is corrupted. I have uninstalled AutoCAD and the Volo.

I toke out references to these programs in the Registry. With Windows I have tried detect

and repair, uninstalling and reinstalling. But all this is to no avail!

What can I do - beside reformatting my PC

I don't have XP, but Office 2000 and ACAD 2002 (plus VoloView) have coexisted on my Win2K machine for quite a while with no problems. Have you tried a virus scan and checks for spyware/malware?
